Ambrobene refers to chemical preparations that have an expectorant and sputum-thinning effect. The drug has a therapeutic effect in diseases with cough and difficult sputum discharge. The main active ingredient is ambroxol. Ambrobene also has an antioxidant effect: it neutralizes and removes damaging molecules called free radicals from the body.

The drug reduces the viscosity of sputum and facilitates its outflow from the bronchi. Ambrobene works as follows:

  • the drug stimulates the production of enzymes in the bronchial mucosa that break down the bonds between the substances that make up the sputum;

  • activates the formation of surfactant (a mixture of active substances that prevent the alveoli of the lungs from sticking together);

  • activates the function of the cilia of the bronchial mucosa, preventing them from sticking together.

Ambrobene penetrates in the highest concentration into the lung tissue, and can pass into breast milk, through the placental barrier and into the cerebrospinal fluid. The effect after internal administration of the drug is observed within 30 minutes and lasts (depending on the dose) 6-12 hours. After administration as an injection, Ambrobene acts faster and lasts for 6-10 hours. Excreted from the body with urine.

Instructions for use

Indications for use

Ambrobene in any dosage form is used for the treatment of chronic and acute respiratory diseases in which there is sputum and its discharge from the respiratory tract is impaired: pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis.

The drug is also used to treat respiratory distress syndrome in newborns (including premature babies) in order to activate the synthesis of surfactant.

Contraindications

  • individual intolerance to any component of the drug;

  • peptic ulcer of the duodenum and stomach;

  • epilepsy and convulsive syndrome;

  • functional failure of the liver and kidneys;

  • secretion of sputum in large quantities and impaired bronchial motility due to immobile cilia (due to the threat of stagnation of sputum in the bronchi).

Side effects

  • From the digestive tract (less than 1%): increased salivation or dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bowel dysfunction (constipation or diarrhea).

  • From the respiratory system (less than 1%): copious nasal discharge, shortness of breath.

  • Allergic reactions (less than 1%): skin rashes such as urticaria, itching, swelling of the face, fever, anaphylactic shock (isolated cases).

  • Ambrobene treatment

    How to use Ambrobene?

    Capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole, without opening the capsule or crushing the tablet. Ambrobene is taken orally after meals. The medicine should be taken with 200 ml of liquid: water, tea or juice. During treatment, the patient should be provided with plenty of fluids, because the drug dilutes sputum better if there is a sufficient amount of liquid in the diet.

    The drug has no effect on the speed of reaction and attention; there are no professional restrictions during treatment.

    Patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus should take into account that the syrup contains sorbitol as an excipient.

    Ambrobene in solution for injection is administered intravenously by drip or slowly in a stream. Before administration, the drug is diluted with saline solution - 0.9% sodium chloride solution, Ringer-Locke solution or 5% dextrose solution.

    The solution for internal use is dosed using a measuring cup included with the medicine package.

    The use of the drug in the form of inhalations is described below (in the Ambrobene for inhalations section).

    Ambrobene dosage

    • Pills: adults are prescribed 90 mg/day (1 tablet x 3 times) for 2-3 days, and then 30 mg/day (0.5 tablet x 2 times).

    • Ambrobene retard capsules: adults: 1 capsule (75 mg) per day.

    • Syrup: adults: 90 mg/day (10 ml x 3 times) for 2-3 days, then 60 mg/day (10 ml x 2 times).

    • Ambrobene solution inside: for 2-3 days, 90 mg/day (4 ml x 3 times), then 60 mg/day (4 ml x 2 times).

    • Ambrobene solution for injection: adults 30-45 mg/day (2 ml x 2-3 r.)
    The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually depending on the severity of the disease. On your own, without consulting a doctor, it is recommended to take the drug for no longer than 4-5 days.

    For functional disorders of the liver or kidneys, lower doses are used and with increasing intervals between doses of the drug. Only a doctor can prescribe a dosage regimen in these cases.

    Overdose

    Symptoms of a drug overdose may include nausea, vomiting, drooling, and decreased blood pressure. To help with an overdose, you should rinse your stomach and take fat-containing foods in the first 2 hours after taking the medicine.
    For dosages for children, see below in the section “Ambrobene for children”

    Ambrobene for children

    Ambrobene in tablet form is contraindicated in children under 6 years of age, and in the form of retard capsules - up to 12 years of age. Up to 2 years of age, Ambrobene can be used only as prescribed by a doctor and under his supervision. The drug is given orally to the child after meals with a sufficient amount of liquid (warm tea, juice, water, broth).

    The most convenient dosage form of Ambrobene for treating children is syrup. It is dosed using a plastic measuring cup: 1 ml of syrup contains 3 mg of active ingredient.

    Doses of syrup for children

    • up to 2 years – 15 mg/day (2.5 ml x 2 times);

    • from 2 to 6 years – 22.5 mg/day (2.5 ml x 3 times);

    • from 6 to 12 years – 30-45 mg/day (5 ml x 2-3 r.);

    • over 12 years old - as for adults: 90 mg/day (10 ml x 3 times) for 2-3 days, then 60 mg/day (10 ml x 2 times).

    Doses of the drug in tablets

    children from 6 to 12 years old – 0.5 tablets. x 2-3 rubles/day.

    Doses of the drug in capsules for children over 12 years of age

    1 capsule (75 mg) per day, preferably at the same time of day.

    Doses of the drug for children in the form of injections

    Ambrobene solution for injection is administered to children subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenously (drip or slow stream). The solvent used is saline solution (0.9%) sodium chloride, Ringer-Locke solution, 5% solution of levulose, glucose.

    The dose of the drug is prescribed at the rate of 1.2 -1.6 mg/kg of the baby’s body weight.

    • Children under 2 years old – 1 ml x 2 times per day;

    • 2-6 years – 1 ml x 3 rubles/day;

    • after 6 years – 2 ml x 2-3 rubles/day

    For respiratory distress syndrome in newborns (including premature babies), the dose of the drug can be increased to 10 mg/kg body weight per day, and even up to 30 mg/kg body weight in severe cases. The daily dose of the medicine is administered 3-4 times a day. Discontinue the drug when symptoms disappear.

    The injection solution cannot be combined in the same dropper (or syringe) with medications whose pH is higher than 6.3.

    For the use of Ambrobene in the form of inhalations for children, see below in the section “Ambrobene for inhalations”.

    For inhalations

    In the treatment of respiratory diseases, you can also use a method such as Ambrobene inhalation. Sometimes it will be more effective than other routes of drug administration. This is especially true for the treatment of chronic diseases (bronchial asthma, obstructive bronchitis, bronchiectasis).

    Benefits of this treatment: the medicinal substance immediately enters the bronchial mucosa and acts immediately; the drug has a more effective effect, while giving the least number of adverse reactions; Ambrobene inhalations can reduce treatment time and doses of antibacterial drugs.

    The drug quickly thins out thick, viscous mucus that impairs the patency of the bronchi. By coughing up sputum after inhalation, the patient feels significant relief. Using Ambrobene inhalations for bronchiectasis, you can achieve longer remission.

    The bronchi are cleared of clear, viscous mucus by inhalation after an attack of bronchial asthma. To prevent the occurrence of an attack of bronchospasm provoked by inhalation, the patient is recommended to take bronchial dilators before the procedure.

    For Ambrobene inhalation, a solution is used, which can also be used internally. In some cases, simultaneous administration of the drug orally and by inhalation is used, taking into account the daily dose of the drug. The solution is dosed using a measuring cup.

    For inhalations, you can use any modern equipment (with the exception of steam inhalations). The most convenient device is a nebulizer, which converts the medicine into an aerosol that can penetrate hard-to-reach areas of the lungs and bronchi. This device is convenient to use both in the hospital and at home.

    Before use, the Ambrobene solution is diluted by half with physiological sodium chloride solution and heated to 36-37˚C. The prepared solution is placed in a special container, then the inhaler is turned on. To prevent coughing during inhalation, you should breathe normally and not deeply. You can inhale the medicine using a mask placed on the face or through a special breathing tube (the mouthpiece is placed in the mouth).

    Ambrobene dosages for inhalation:

    • children under 2 years old - 1 ml of Ambrobene solution 1-2 times a day (only under the supervision of a doctor);

    • children from 2 to 6 years old – 2 ml x 1-2 rubles/day;

    • children over 6 years old and adults – 2-3 ml x 1-2 r./day.
    Inhalations are usually carried out for 4-5 days.

    During pregnancy and lactation

    Experiments on animals did not reveal any teratogenic effects of Ambrobene on the fetus. There is no clinical data confirming the safety of the drug during pregnancy. Based on this, it is recommended to avoid prescribing the drug to pregnant women (especially in the first trimester).

    In the second or third trimester of pregnancy, the appointment of Ambrobene is permissible only by the doctor’s decision and in cases where the therapeutic effect is higher than the possible risk of exposure to the fetus.

    Given that the drug passes into breast milk, a nursing woman can take the drug as prescribed by a doctor when assessing the balance between the benefits of treatment and the risk for the child.

    For dry cough

    The body's defense response to infection is coughing. If a dry cough occurs, treatment should be carried out without delay. A dry cough does not bring relief to the patient and can even cause complications - pneumothorax (air entering the pleural cavity due to rupture of the lung tissue) or pneumomediastinum (air entering the mediastinum due to bronchial rupture).

    A dry cough with inflammation in the respiratory organs should be converted to a wet one. This can be achieved with the help of Ambrobene, using any form of release of the drug. The easiest way to achieve the desired effect is through inhalation. Under the influence of ambroxol, the bronchial mucosa produces mucus, the sputum is liquefied and excreted.

    In some cases, the cough may be dry even when sputum is in the bronchi, but is not coughed up due to impaired motor activity of the bronchi. In these cases, the use of Ambrobene is not indicated and even poses a danger.

    Ambrobene drug interactions

    • Simultaneous treatment with Ambrobene and other antitussive drugs containing Codeine makes it difficult to produce sputum, because they suppress cough.

    • Ambrobene improves the accumulation of antibiotics such as Erythromycin, Amoxicillin, Doxycycline, Cefuroxime in the lung tissue and bronchi.

    • Ambrobene in the form of an injection solution cannot be mixed with solutions whose pH is higher than 6.3.

    Analogs

    There are a number of analogues of Ambrobene based on the active substance (synonyms):
    Ambroxol, Ambrolan, Lazolgin, Bronhoxol, Ambrosan, Lazolvan, Bronhorus, Medox, Bronchovern Drops, Neo-Bronchol, Mucobron, Deflegmin, AmbroHexal, Remebrox, Halixol, Flavamed, Suprima-kof, ambroxol-retard.

    Lazolvan or Ambrobene?

    Manufacturers of drugs are different: Ambrobene is produced by the famous pharmaceutical company Ratio farm in Germany, and Lazolvan is produced in Greece and Italy. However, the active ingredient of both drugs is ambroxol. Therefore, the therapeutic effect of both Ambrobene and Lazolvan is almost the same: they dilute sputum and stimulate the cough reflex.

    Ambrobene has more dosage forms than Lazolvan, but at the same time, it also has more contraindications. Lazolvan can be used at any age. Both drugs are not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is undesirable to prescribe both drugs for a wet cough.

    Despite the similar mechanism of action, the drugs differ in the excipients in their composition, which should be taken into account when choosing a drug.
    The price of Ambrobene is lower than Lazolvan.

    A clear answer to the question “Which is better of these two drugs?” No. The drug is selected by the doctor individually.

Content

When a severe cough haunts you and interferes with work and rest, you really want to find a medicine that will quickly cope with the problem. The task is within the capabilities of a German drug that helps relieve unpleasant symptoms and alleviate the condition. It is important to study the instructions so that use does not cause harm.

Active ingredients of Ambrobene

The drug is characterized by mucolytic properties. After use, a large amount of mucus begins to be produced, which is immediately removed from the nasopharynx, lungs, and bronchi. Ambrobene's instructions inform that the drug normalizes, facilitates breathing, and has the following properties:

  • anti-inflammatory;
  • antioxidant;
  • expectorants.

Ambrobene - the instructions for use are known - is effective due to the properties of the drug. From the beginning of the reception:

  • the sticking of small alveoli is eliminated;
  • patency in small bronchi improves;
  • the movement of epithelial cilia is stimulated, their gluing is prevented, which promotes the removal of mucus;
  • enzymes are produced that dilute sputum and reduce viscosity;
  • the production of immunoglobulin is enhanced - local immunity is increased;
  • harmful bacteria are removed.

The composition of the drug Ambrobene, according to the instructions, depends on the release format - capsules, solution, tablets, but in all cases it contains the main substance - ambroxol hydrochloride. Auxiliary ingredients may be:

  • magnesium stearate;
  • silicon dioxide;
  • corn starch;
  • potassium sorbate;
  • sorbitol liquid;
  • hydrochloric water;
  • propylene glycol;
  • saccharin;
  • raspberry flavor.

Indications for the use of a low-cost mucolytic agent are respiratory diseases. Their peculiarity is the presence of difficult to separate, viscous sputum. Treatable:

  • tracheobronchitis;
  • pneumonia;
  • bronchiectasis;
  • nasopharyngitis;
  • bronchitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • laryngitis;

  • cystic fibrosis of the lungs.

The use of a cheap drug to improve the patient’s condition is effective:

  • with a dry cold cough during ARVI,
  • for cleansing the bronchi before and after surgery;
  • to stimulate lung maturation in a child during the perinatal period;
  • for bronchial asthma if there is a problem with sputum discharge;
  • to facilitate the removal of mucus in tuberculosis.

How to use Ambrobene

An important condition, according to the instructions, is to wash down the drug with a large amount of water - at least 100 ml: this helps to better liquefy and remove mucus. The prescribed dosage must be followed. How to take Ambrobene - depends on the release format:

  • solution - dilute with juice, water;
  • take a tablet or syrup;
  • composition for inhalation - breathe;
  • Effervescent tablets - dissolve in water.

Ambrobene syrup - instructions for use

The pediatric form of the medicine is very convenient. Ambrobene syrup has a pleasant raspberry taste, does not contain thickeners or preservatives - it is safe for children. Available in dark bottles of 100 ml, each 5 ml contains 15 mg of ambroxol. For ease of use there is a measuring cup. The pediatrician prescribes a dosage depending on age:

  • under 5 years – 2.5 ml per day 2-3 times;

ambroxol

Dosage form:

solution for oral administration and inhalation

Compound
100 ml of solution contains:
active substance: ambroxol hydrochloride 0.750 mg
Excipients: potassium sorbate, hydrochloric acid, purified water.

Description
A transparent, colorless to slightly yellowish, odorless solution.

Pharmacotherapeutic group:

mucolytic agent.

ATS code: R05CB06

PHARMACHOLOGIC EFFECT
Ambroxol (the active metabolite of bromhexine) is a mucolytic drug that improves the rheological properties of sputum, reduces its viscosity and adhesive properties, which facilitates its removal from the respiratory tract.
Ambroxol stimulates the activity of the serous cells of the bronchial lining glands, the production of enzymes that break down the bonds between sputum polysaccharides, the formation of surfactant and the direct activity of the bronchial cilia, preventing their adhesion.
After oral administration, the therapeutic effect occurs within 30 minutes and lasts for 6-12 hours (depending on the dose taken).

INDICATIONS FOR USE
Ambrobene - a solution for oral administration and inhalation is used for diseases of the respiratory tract with the release of viscous sputum and difficulty in sputum discharge:
- acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia;
- bronchial asthma;
- bronchiectasis.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
- hypersensitivity to ambroxol and/or other components of the finished dosage form;
- peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum;
- epileptic syndrome

Relative contraindications
If the functional capacity of the kidneys is limited and/or with severe liver disease, Ambrobene should be taken with extreme caution, reducing the dose used and increasing the time between doses of the drug (usually in these conditions, treatment is carried out under the supervision of a physician).
Ambrobene should also be used with extreme caution and only under the supervision of a physician in cases of impaired bronchial motility and in large volumes of secreted secretions (the risk of stagnation of secretions in the bronchi).

USE DURING PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING
Despite the fact that to date there is no reliable data on the negative effects of ambroxol on the fetus and infants, using Ambrobene during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, and during breastfeeding is possible only after a thorough analysis of the benefit/risk ratio by the attending physician.

METHOD OF APPLICATION AND DOSES
Oral use:
Ambrobene is taken orally after meals with a sufficient amount of liquid (for example, water, juice or tea) using the supplied measuring cup.
The following dosages are usually used (1 ml of solution contains 7.5 mg of ambroxol):
Children under 2 years old take 1 ml of solution 2 times a day (15 mg/day).
Children from 2 to 6 years old take 1 ml of solution 3 times a day (22.5 mg/day).
Children from 6 to 12 years old take 2 ml of solution 2-3 times a day (30-45 mg/day).
Adults and teenagers in the first 2-3 days of treatment, take 4 ml of solution 3 times a day (90 mg/day), in subsequent days, 4 ml of solution 2 times a day (60 mg/day).
Inhalations:
When using Ambrobene in the form of inhalations, you can use any modern equipment (except for steam inhalations). Before inhalation, the drug is mixed with a 0.9% sodium chloride solution (for optimal air humidification, it can be diluted in a 1:1 ratio) and heated to body temperature. Inhalations should be carried out in normal breathing mode (so as not to provoke coughing shocks). Patients suffering from bronchial asthma, in order to avoid nonspecific irritation of the respiratory tract and their spasm, should use bronchodilators before inhaling ambroxol. The following dosages are usually used (1 ml of solution contains 7.5 mg of ambroxol):
Children under 2 years old inhale 1 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (7.5-15 mg/day).
Children from 2 to 6 years old 2 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (15-30 mg/day).
Children over 6 years old and adults inhale 2-3 ml of solution 1-2 times a day (15-45 mg/day).
Treatment of children under 2 years of age is carried out only under the supervision of a doctor.
While taking Ambrobene, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids.
It is not recommended to use Ambrobene without medical prescription for more than 4-5 days.

Occasionally, weakness, headache, dry mouth and respiratory tract, salivation, rhinorrhea, gastralgia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dysuria, exanthema may develop. In very rare cases, allergic reactions may occur (skin rash, angioedema of the face, breathing problems, temperature reaction with chills). Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported in isolated cases, and anaphylactic shock has been reported in one case.

INTERACTION WITH OTHER MEDICINES
Simultaneous use with drugs that have antitussive activity (for example, containing codeine) is not recommended due to the difficulty of removing sputum from the bronchi while reducing cough.
Simultaneous administration with antibiotics (amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) improves the flow of antibiotics into the pulmonary tract. This interaction with doxycycline is widely used for therapeutic purposes.

Ambroxol is well tolerated when taken orally at a dose of up to 25 mg/kg per day.
Symptoms: increased salivation, nausea, vomiting, decreased blood pressure.
Treatment: gastric lavage in the first 1-2 hours after taking the drug, taking fat-containing foods; it is necessary to monitor hemodynamic parameters and carry out symptomatic therapy if necessary.

Ambrobene is an antitussive drug with mucolytic (promoting sputum thinning) action. Has a positive effect on the lungs in the prenatal period.

Pharmacological action of Ambrobene

The active ingredient of Ambrobene is ambroxol hydrochloride, a chemical compound that has a pronounced effect on the glandular cells of the bronchi and alveoli of the lungs. Reduces the viscosity of sputum (mucolytic effect) by stimulating its secretion with increased release of surfactant - a surfactant contained in the lungs and bronchi with the normalization of serous and mucous, that is, liquid and viscous components of sputum. It affects the mobility of the cilia of the ciliated epithelium lining the respiratory tract, accelerating the movement of sputum outward (secretomotor effect).

In the prenatal (antenatal) period, it has a stimulating effect on lung development, increasing the production and release of surfactant, while simultaneously preventing its breakdown. This effect is associated with the use of Ambrobene to prevent pulmonary failure in children born prematurely.
