You don't need to have any special knowledge to understand how the watch mechanism works. Probably in every home there is an old Chinese clock with a still working mechanism. It may be useful to you when creating original wall clocks with your own hands. In the human understanding, watches have a certain mystical power. After all, they have a special function - to be a time manager.

Any housewife can create a watch with her own hands. She may only need a little imagination and a certain amount of time to create this decorative element. As a result, such a clock will be an attractive place in your interior. We must assume that anything can serve as a dial. The most important thing is that such watches must be original and beautiful.

One of the creation options could be a round board, which previously served as a cable reel. In this case, the designer, not paying attention to the main purpose of the coil, saw the stenciled inscriptions and the hole in the middle as the basis for the dial of a homemade watch. If you are decorating a travel agency office or a room with a geographic focus, a special option for creating a clock would be to use halves of a globe. Such a clock will take up quite a bit of space on the wall, but in any case it’s worth it. In the kitchen, you can use a version of a clock with buttons to replace the numbers on the dial. Such a watch will create the effect of a grandmother’s chest with old things. A ball clock will be complex, but quite unusual. Here you need to take a bright ball and a curved arrow as a basis. Such wall clocks will look like a real time machine from science fiction films. To create a clock-painting, you will need to take any painting you like and adapt it so that it shows the time.

The strict style of a living room or office will suit the option of a clock decorated on a chessboard. In this case, elegance, rigor and precision in the room are guaranteed to you. Use wood as the base of your homemade clock, and you can use thin branches as hands. The result is a natural and environmentally friendly version of a wall clock. Music lovers and music lovers have a right to life with figures cut out of old, unnecessary gramophone records. This will be a very creative watch design. If you do decide to hang a clock, then make sure that it will be visible from anywhere in the room, and you will always know what time it is at the moment.

Comfort in our home depends on many details and little things. Thus, most interior stylists and designers agree that well-chosen curtains, lamps, blankets, pillows, carpets and clocks are integral attributes of comfort. Our master class will be devoted to the latter.

Anyone can make them, and there are hundreds of ways to do this. The most important thing in this matter is to install the clock mechanism (you can purchase it in a specialized store or remove it from an old, no longer needed watch), and the appearance of the product itself is left to your discretion.

In this lesson, we will talk about the most popular techniques that can be useful in designing original watches.

Clock in decoupage style

If you decide to make a watch using a similar technique, then you will need to purchase in advance from a specialized store a ready-made blank template, hands and clock mechanism, patterns for the background on rice paper or a napkin, acrylic paints, glue, varnish and other compositions necessary for decoupage, brushes, sponges.

First, you need to process the workpiece by covering it three times with acrylic paint primer and sanding it. After drying, it needs to be given the desired tone and texture. To give the surface of the watch an aged, shabby look, it is better to apply the paint randomly using a sponge.

Next, you should outline a frame around the perimeter of the workpiece, stepping back a couple of centimeters from the edge, and paint it in a darker tone.

Now you need to paint the workpiece in the color that suits your interior. In our case, the tone chosen was light ocher (ocher mixed with white). Mix the paint and apply with a sponge. Let it dry completely, then sand the workpiece.

The bezel of the watch must be highlighted in color. For example, wood paint would be suitable.

After this, you can apply the selected pattern to the workpiece. First you need to cut it out of rice paper, and if the pattern is on a napkin, then soak it in water. Now we simply apply it to its place on the dial and coat it with glue on top.

In the next step you will have to use all your imagination and artistic skills, because you will need to remove the border between the napkin and the surface of the watch and achieve the integrity of the pattern with the background. To do this, you will need to select paints of appropriate tones and use a sponge to create a smooth transition from the pattern to the surface. You can also try to continue the pattern in the same style and use a brush to complete its elements along the surface of the clock and along the dark frame. This will certainly add brightness and vibrancy to the image.

After drying, the most interesting step in this process begins - the artificial aging of our watches. To do this, use a special two-step craquelure product. It is applied with a dry brush in two layers, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly.

After its use, characteristic cracks appear on the product, which should be rubbed with copper powder. At the final stage, the workpiece is varnished.

Once the clock mechanism, numbers and hands find their place, the clock will come to life and will become a wonderful addition to your kitchen, living room interior or a wonderful gift for friends.

Quilling style

Quilling or paper rolling is a decorative and applied art in which one works with strips of paper of different widths, twisting them into pattern elements, which then form a single composition. A flat wooden plywood board or thick cardboard will be suitable as the basis for future watches. In our case, black paper was glued to the surface of the board, and the elements were mainly made of white paper to achieve contrast. You can choose any combination, as well as use any quilling elements.

The color scheme of the product should depend on where it will be used. At a minimum, it should fit into the existing style of the room and not disturb its harmony with its presence, on the contrary, strengthening this criterion. So the choice of color is the most important point in this matter.

To work with this technique, you will need strips cut from paper, glue and a hook or knitting needle on which you will wind the paper. All finished elements are glued to the surface of the future product. You can mark the divisions, but this is not necessary.

First you need to do the numbers. Simple quilling elements in the form of tightly rolled spirals are suitable for this.

After the numbers, proceed to creating the main elements of watch decoration. In this case, flowers consisting of the “drop” element were chosen.

The finished “drops” must be collected into flowers and all the preparations must be transferred to the surface of the watch.

Before adding the clock mechanism, you need to decorate the middle of the clock.

All that remains is to place the finished watch in a frame under glass.

This product option is suitable for children's bedrooms.

From wooden sticks

In this case, you will not need many materials, just wooden sticks, glue, sharp scissors and a working clock with a flat surface. Cut out at least one hundred sticks and glue them like rays of sunshine in several rows, making sure that the length of the sticks is relatively equal. It is advisable to make a second layer of longer sticks. This will create an interesting visual effect - an “explosion” effect.

This design will fit original into the interior of the kitchen and living room.

From tiles for false ceiling

Such tiles, if, of course, they are made of gypsum, will always look beautiful and with special chic. Making our device from this material is an excellent solution for creative and romantic people.

Gypsum ceiling tiles are called medallions among builders. A clock mechanism is attached to its back. A hole is made in the center for the arrows. In order for our product to have a laconic and at the same time refined look, it is appropriate to apply an additional coating to it in the form of matte paint or paint with a glossy effect.

You choose the paint color yourself, but it is worth remembering that the original color of plaster, a material made to look like marble, is beige, white, pearl, white-coffee and white-purple (pale pink).

This element of room decor will perfectly complement the decoration of halls, living rooms, and bedrooms.

In kitchens, clocks are an indispensable attribute. In addition to the fact that the housewife uses them to guide her while cooking and gets her family ready for work and school, modern chronometers demonstrate the taste of the owner and decorate the interior of the room.

How to decorate a watch yourself

How can you make your watch, stamped at a Chinese factory and having thousands of clones, the only and exclusive model? Moreover, if after renovation they do not fit the new style at all. Did you know that there are completely inexpensive means to ensure that this essential kitchen attribute will continue to serve as a source of pride for your household and the admiration of your guests?

Updating watches using decoupage technique

Decoupage is a way of decorating objects using napkins.

Do you think this clock was store bought or repurposed from a regular old one that had been hanging on the wall for several years?

Even a novice master can master decorating a watch with his own hands using this technique; the only condition here is accuracy and perseverance. To restore walkers in this way, you just need to stock up on decoupage or ordinary beautiful paper napkins, which are sold in supermarkets. An important point is that they should be two- or three-layer (they are more durable).

    Required tools and materials:
  • beautiful napkin;
  • PVA glue;
  • brush;
  • white paint (you can buy acrylic at a hardware store)
  • fine skin;
  • watches in need of alteration;
  • file;
  • alcohol, acetone or white spirit to degrease the surface;
  • soft cloth.

    The update steps are as follows:
  1. The device is disassembled and the clock mechanism is removed.
  2. If the old picture was pasted, it is removed. If the design has been applied to the surface, it is degreased and covered in several layers of white paint with intermediate drying.
  3. The surface is sanded, removing all roughness.
  4. Remove the top layer of paint from the napkin, try it on the watch and carefully tear out (do not cut out) the beautiful middle so that the clear boundaries of the gluing are not visible.
  5. It is better to carry out the next manipulation near the sink. The napkin is placed face down on the file. Moisten it generously with water from a spray bottle so that it floats on the file. Carefully straighten the folds with a brush. Then, tilting the file, drain off the excess water. The napkin is placed in the place where it is supposed to be glued and, carefully lifting it on one side with a brush, remove the file.
  6. The paper is coated with a mixture of water and PVA glue (1:1). Allow to dry; small wrinkles can be removed by lightly going over them with fine sandpaper.
  7. The product is coated with several layers of acrylic varnish. A novice needleworker should not spend money on expensive professional glue. You can purchase acrylic substances for saunas and baths in construction stores.

The final touch is assembling the chronometer. Then the product is mounted on the wall and the result is admired.

Using craquelure in watch decoration

If simply using a decoupage napkin is boring, then you can complicate the work and create an imitation of an antique clock. Layers of special varnishes and structural pastes are applied to the product, as a result of which one layer breaks the other and cracks form, giving the craft a touch of antiquity.

What is the best way to transform an old product? There are many ways, some resort to craquelure.

    In this photograph of a watch made using the craquelure technique, you can see the following as decoration:
  • white openwork napkin;
  • vintage picture in the center;
  • white thin lace;
  • rhinestones and half beads.

The paper napkin, second hand and dial are painted gold; gold paint has been rubbed into the cracks, which allows them to be classified as a fashionable vintage style.

Another work made using craquelure. Butterflies cut out of plywood and decorated with decoupage napkins attract attention.

Decorating watches using alter scrap technique

This method involves decorating products with various volumetric details and is characterized by a multi-layered composition. It's always something unusual and creative. “Alter” translated from English means “change”, “remake”, “improve”, “update”.

In cases where it is not possible to repair a broken alarm clock, it is advisable to restore it using this method, giving it a second life.

Look how beautifully you can decorate an old broken alarm clock. I want to endlessly look at the details.

Alter scrap uses literally everything: remnants of lace, beads, scraps of chains, keys, flowers made of fabric and paper, various stickers, etc.

Even old spare parts from an alarm clock and fragments of a figurine are suitable as decor.

And look at this beauty. Don't you want to create something like this?

Decorate old clocks with plastic spoons

An interesting design solution (and also very cheap) would be to decorate a round wall clock with disposable plastic spoons.

Even a complete non-professional can bring such an idea to life. Will you take on this job?

What is needed to create such a “sun” on the wall?

    You will need:
  • round clock;
  • cardboard from the box;
  • scissors;
  • ceiling glue or any other;
  • about 250 spoons;
  • paint of the desired shade.

Before starting work, determine the size of the product. Then:

  1. A ring is cut out of cardboard, the inner side of which is equal to the diameter of the watch, and the outer side should be slightly smaller than the estimated volume needed as a result of decoration.
  2. The handles of the spoons are cut off, leaving very small stumps. In the outer circle, at a short distance from each other, they begin to glue them. The next row of spoons is glued so that they cover the space between the previous ones. And thus all the rows are filled.
  3. They are dyed in the desired color.
  4. Glue the cardboard to the finished watch.
  5. Hanging a chronometer at your permanent place of residence

Plastic spoons are easy to paint with spray paint.

Decorating old watches with textiles

You can make a watch an interesting interior detail by decorating it with textiles. Lace will add airiness and romance to the chronometer and hide the shabby case.

How to decorate a wall clock using textiles can be seen in this photo.

How do you like this transformation of the device? All you need is a twisted rope, braid, lace, a brush, tape (to close the joint), glue and scissors. They will look great in the kitchen of a housewife who loves ruffles and frills, complete with curtains and covers for stools or chairs.

You can restore an old shabby watch using twisted rope with tassels, lace, artificial
flowers and beads

Do-it-yourself painting and painting of watches

In a country house decorated in retro style, shabby and artificially aged wall walkers are quite suitable. Painting can be done with the paints remaining in the household and, without waiting for complete drying, lightly rub the surface with a cloth (to create scuffs and the appearance that the walkers have been repainted many times).

To build such a clock, you will need a minimum of knowledge and skills.

That's not bad either. You can original paint the surface to your liking. Do you like this painting?

The style in which this table clock is made can be classified as shabby chic. Faint decoupage in the middle and some wear on the body give the impression that it has been repainted many times and has been exposed to the sun. In this way you can make an almost antique thing.

    Creating abrasions is not difficult at all:
  1. Paint the watch case black and let dry.
  2. Apply white paint to a dry layer and, without waiting for it to dry completely, remove the top layer of paint in the right places with light touches.

This watch combines decoupage of the inner part, which is located under the glass, and painting of the outer case in gold from a spray can. This is an example of a very simple product update.

Decorating a wall clock with coffee beans

    It's very easy to update a round wall clock with your own hands. Decorating with coffee beans is quite popular. There are many transformation options. All you need is:
  • watch;
  • coffee beans;
  • glue "Moment";
  • desire and time.

How to use coffee beans to update several former and completely identical round wall clocks with your own hands?

Coffee products not only look beautiful, but also smell delicious. Do you want these for yourself? Take risks! It’s easy to restore fashionable walkers from “kitchen” material.

Decorating a watch with shells

What do vacationers bring home from the sea? Probably shells, which then gather dust idle on the antesols for years. There is a great way to update your watch with these seafood gifts. The simplest trick is to stick shells on the body.

Boring ordinary watches have become sea watches

Other ideas

There are many ways to decorate walkers. Below we will talk about the most common ones.

Provencal notes

If the external appearance of the watch is not suitable for restoration, but the mechanism is still working, you can cut out a case of any shape from plywood and allow the watch mechanism to work to its full potential.

This watch is made in Provence style, it contains rustic pictures: lavender, roosters, cages with birds

Restoring old watches using leather decoration

Craftsmen who know how to work with natural materials create exclusive products. Old leather gloves, bags, raincoats and leather scraps are used.

A chic composition that will not leave any guest indifferent

The amazing compositional work shown in the photo shows that a small ordinary round watch, decorated with leather and flowers, framed by a painted wooden frame, can become an author's masterpiece.

Restoration using wood and jute rope

An original clock made of wood and thick rope will easily fit into the design of a wooden country house.

These walkers look great in a rustic style.

As you can see, you can use everything, even leftover boards, knots and scraps of thick rope. The materials used are sticks from boxes, which are initially burned with a blowtorch, then scraped with an iron brush until the wood texture appears, then covered with several layers of varnish.

2 knots are used as holders, on which indentations are made in the middle so that the middle board does not stick out from the composition. Then a hole is drilled in the center to attach the clock mechanism, a dial is made from furniture nails and the product is decorated with rope.
The masterpiece for the dacha is ready!

Here is a version of walkers that are made of rope twisted into a ring

This work was made using the Jute Filigree technique. Regular, bleached and dyed jute is used here. This material is sold in reels at hardware stores.

Human imagination is limitless. There are many options for remaking and restoring old watches. All you need is a little time, love for your home and the desire to make your home individual.

Beautiful wall clocks are always a source of information about time, but they also decorate the interior of an apartment and give it a special charm.

Moreover, if you think that it is very difficult to make a wall clock with your own hands, then you are deeply mistaken. This is a very real task that almost everyone can do. After all, for such a watch you do not need to assemble the mechanism itself.

Classmates

It is taken from old watches or taken out of cheap Chinese alarm clocks. And on this basis, you decorate them to your taste, taking into account the design of your apartment.

What are wall clocks made of?

If you decide to make a wall clock yourself or make a grandfather clock with your own hands, then you need to know that this can be made from almost any material. Of course, the most popular is wood. Due to its properties, watches made of wood can be made in a variety of shapes and last a long time.

Usually, not only wall clocks, but also grandfather clocks are made from this material. By the way, drawings for the manufacture of wall clocks are usually not required, but they may sometimes be needed for floor structures that have a more complex assembly.

Record clock

Plastic and other materials

Plastic watches are also popular. They are even more durable, but their production is more complex. An original watch can be made from cardboard, and the simplicity with which this can be done is surprising. As a material for a wall clock, you can use paper or, for example, gramophone records.

Note!

It’s quite possible to make a clock for the kitchen from a tin can.

The additional material used mainly for the manufacture of hands is also very diverse. These could be tree branches, buttons, pencils or wire.

Cardboard clock

As we have already said, making cardboard clocks is quite simple, so we will now tell you how to make a clock from cardboard yourself. In order to carry out this undertaking we will need the following materials and tools:

  1. Clockwork. It can be pulled out of an old unnecessary watch.
  2. A piece of corrugated cardboard. Its dimensions depend on the dimensions of your future product.
  3. Wooden disk.
  4. , PVA glue, kraft paper (special high-strength wrapping paper).
  5. (fine-grained and possibly coarse-grained), hook, decorative elements.

Paper clock

Main stages of execution

First you need to take a disk made of wood (the same goes for wooden watches), and use a hammer drill to make a hole for the clock mechanism. After this, we cut out two circles from cardboard and glue them on both sides and in one of them we also make a hole for the clock mechanism.

Having made the base for the clock, you need to cover the ends of the disk with cardboard, cutting out a piece with a width equal to the thickness of the disk and a length equal to its circumference. We fix it with PVA glue. Then you need to cover the clock with kraft paper and, on the reverse side, fix the hook with which we will hang our product on a nail. By the way, a master class on watch making can be viewed below.

DIY wall clock video:

Final work

Now we need to paint our disk black. It will be enough to do this from the front side. After the surface has dried, we make a hole for the arrows using an awl. Now we need silver paint, which contrasts as best as possible with the black color of the disk, and use it to apply the divisions and numbers on the dial. We paint the arrows with the same color. We finish our work by installing the clock mechanism and decoratively decorating the ends and edges of the disk.

Note!

This can be done, for example, using rhinestones.

As you can see from the instructions presented, almost anyone can make a watch from cardboard.

Wood clock

Let's look at how quickly you can make a wooden clock. To make them you will need the following materials and tools:

  1. Wooden disk with a diameter of 330 mm.
  2. Wooden sticks and balls of small diameter in the amount of 12 pieces.
  3. Clockwork.
  4. Sandpaper, glue, .
  5. Wire cutters and hammer drill.
  6. Black cardboard and paint in two colors.
  7. Pencil, scissors, ruler.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Sand the disc and balls until they have a smooth surface and wipe them free of dust.
  2. We cut the wooden sticks to the same length. We choose the length ourselves.
  3. Using a punch, we will make a hole in the center of the disk intended for the arrows.
  4. Drill 12 holes at the end of the wooden disk. They will serve as grooves for sticks with balls. The distance between the disks must be the same. To do this, you need to use a protractor and make marks every thirty degrees.
  5. Pour glue into the holes and fix wooden sticks in them.
  6. At this stage of making a wooden watch, you need to treat the surface with a primer and, after drying, apply several layers of paint. The paint color, in our case, should be white.
  7. Now we need to paint the balls red (it is most suitable for a white disk). To make this convenient, we will need a piece of foam plastic and the remains of our wooden sticks. We string balls onto them and paint them, after which we insert them into a piece of foam plastic and wait for them to dry. For painting we use a spray, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to paint evenly with a brush.
  8. After drying, insert the balls into sticks and “sit” them on the glue.
  1. The final step will be to install the clock mechanism on the back of the disc and fix the hands to it. We will make the arrows from thick cardboard, painted black.

This is interesting! do it yourself - master class

Paper clock

In order to make a clock out of paper we will need the following materials:

  1. Clock mechanism and hands.
  2. The dial is made of wood or other dense material.
  3. Paper for decoration and buttons.
  4. Decoupage glue (acts as glue, varnish and sealant), regular glue, paints.
  5. Small paper plate.
  6. Ruler, scissors, pencil, pen.
  7. Brush and foam brush.

Plastic watch

Manufacturing stages

Let's look at how to make a watch with your own hands step by step.

  1. First, we cut the paper (choose the color that suits you), in the shape of an elongated trapezoid, along the length of the dial. In this case, all pieces must be the same in size and shape. The total area of the paper should be larger than the dial, so that later you can bend the ends. Then we fix the paper to the dial with decoupage glue and wait for it to dry. After this, we bend and glue the hanging ends to the back of the dial.
  2. Apply decoupage glue to the surface of the dial in several layers. Each subsequent layer is applied to the previous one, but after complete drying. When applied correctly, the surface of the dial will become glossy.
  3. We mark the dial. This is conveniently done using a paper plate. That is, first we mark all the dots on the plate, then we apply it to the dial and put the dots on it. After that, in place of the numbers, we glue, for example, buttons or something else that your imagination is designed for.

S. Usachev “Clock”
Hours go by days after days.
The clock runs after century...
- What's your hurry, Clock? -
A man once asked.
The clock was terribly surprised.
We thought about it.
We stopped.

History of the invention and development of watches.

The first primitive concepts for measuring time (day, morning, day, noon, evening, night) were subconsciously suggested to ancient people by the regular change of seasons, the change of day and night, the movement of the Sun and Moon across the vault of heaven.
The history of the clock is very interesting and educational. It was important for a person to know the exact time in order to optimally plan his actions, so sundials, water clocks, and mechanical clocks were gradually invented. The result at the moment is the complex mechanisms that can be seen in modern stores.
Origin of the name of the word "clock".
The word “clock” appeared in everyday life in the 14th century, its basis was the Latin “clocca”, meaning bell. And before that, the first experiments in determining time were associated with observing the movements of the sun across the sky. The first sundials came into use in 3500 BC. The principle of their work was to observe the shadow formed in sunlight, since the position and length of the shadow changes at different periods of time.
In Greece, they came to the conclusion that it was necessary to divide the year into twelve months of thirty days each. Subsequently, the inhabitants of ancient Babylon and Egypt divided the day into hours, minutes, seconds, which played an important role in the development of watch production.
Jost Bergey made the first watch using a minute hand in 1577. This product also had a minute hand; the oscillations of the pendulum turned a gear wheel, which, in turn, changed the position of the hands on the dial. The dial was graduated at 12 o'clock, so during the day the hand passed in a circle twice.
Currently, humanity has complex, reliable and high-precision watch movements, created using the latest scientific research and designed in a wide variety of styles.
An unusual clock, ideally matching the style of the interior of the room, is always a successful decorative element. Not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in terms of functionality. These are the original watches you can make with your own hands.
A watch is a necessary, useful and, in general, ordinary thing. Few people think about their design, because the main thing is that they show the time correctly.
But try to make a wall clock with your own hands - and you will notice that the atmosphere in this room has subtly changed.
Of course, we are not talking about assembling and adjusting the clock mechanism yourself - you should use a ready-made one, bought in a store or removed from an old watch. But you can really get creative with the design of the dial.

Step-by-step process for completing the work:

1. Glue two sheets of A4 cardboard onto an A3 sheet.

2. Using a compass, make a circle on cardboard and then cut it out.

3. We wrap the disks with tape.

4. We wrap a paper cord around the wire.

5. Then we wrap the wire around a round stick to make a curl.

6. Find the middle of the circle using a ruler.

7. Glue the disks and start decorating the clock.

8. Cut out hearts from the disks and wrap them with ribbon.

9. We decorate the heart with red sisal balls and glue them to the clock.

10. Glue sisal and rhinestones into the middle of the disks. We install hands with a clock mechanism on the central disk.

Something as small as an ordinary watch can become a central element of the interior if it is made by hand. The main thing about these watches is their uniqueness and the soul put into them.
