  1. Place the knife blade on the paper and trace with a pencil - with a margin of 2-3 millimeters on each side (adjusted for the thickness of the knife).
  2. Re-attach the knife to the paper and now trace the entire knife, not just the blade.
  3. Cut out both “blanks” and glue with tape - check whether the knife fits into the paper sheath. If yes, move on to the next point. If not, do the previous steps again, making the necessary amendments.
  4. Separate the “blanks” and attach them to the skin, then trace and cut out.

  7. Attach the workpiece to the second one and use a pencil to mark points through the holes - make holes here too.
  8. Fold the protruding part of the long piece in half, under the belt, and sew to form a loop. You can make it wide or narrow - to your taste.
  9. Carefully sew the two pieces together.
  10. Finish the outer seam sandpaper to remove any unevenness or burrs.

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • two boards of a suitable size for the knife;

  1. Place the knife on the boards and circle with an indentation of approximately 5-7 mm on each side.

How to make a sheath out of plastic

Making a knife sheath from plastic with your own hands is relatively not difficult - easier than wooden ones. But for this you need to have certain tools. To work you need:

  • plastic pipe;

  • belt fasteners (you can just use a narrow strip of leather);

Depending on the presence of certain alloying elements, the steel receives the appropriate marking. For example, grade U9 - carbon 0.9%, grade X12MF - contains 1.2% molybdenum and vanadium.

  1. First of all, we will make a hard liner from cotton fabric. We form it on the blade of the knife itself, after covering it with paraffin.
  2. Next, cut out a suitable piece of leather, wet it thoroughly, then put the insert on the knife and place it in the center of the cut.
  3. Then we wrap the knife with a piece of leather and secure it with clamps along the contour of the future seam, leaving the product until the leather is completely dry.

  9. And we continue to sew the sheath into two needles, removing the needles using pliers.

The part that shows the outline of the heel of the blade is cut out of the paper model. The length of the workpiece is made slightly longer in case the fold is uneven. To avoid mistakes, the center is drawn with a sharp object (needle, nail, awl).

The heel of the blade is wrapped in paper and glued together to prevent it from unfolding. The plate is heated with hot air using a hairdryer, a heat gun, or, in extreme cases, using open fire. In this case, it is important not to overdo it so that the plate does not melt. To protect your hands, put on gloves, wrap the plate around the heel and lightly press it against the blade. The seam should be on the blade side. Wait until the liner cools down, then remove it. If necessary, cut off the excess part and process it with a file.. The insert must be larger than the blade, otherwise the knife simply will not fit into the sheath.

As a rule, the hole in the insert is small, and it will be difficult to insert a knife, so it outside flared. To do this, you can use any well-heated wedge, for example, slotted screwdriver. If there is none, the required part of the liner is heated again and, using any flat metal object, give it the desired look.

Suspension options

For the convenience of carrying a knife, especially if it is a hunting knife, a pendant is made. The easiest way is to make a leather loop. To do this, measure the width of the belt, multiply by two and add another 2 cm to the seam. To give the loop the required shape, it is placed under a press. If the skin is rough, pre-soak it in warm water. After drying, the loop is sewn to the outer surface of the casing.

A similar design can be made in another way. At the initial stage, when a paper model is being made, a platform is added to the outlined blade from the handle side. It is equal in width to the sheath, and the length corresponds to the width of the belt on which it will be worn, plus a safety margin of 1.5-2 cm. Then two parallel horizontal slits are made on the leather blank in increments of approximately 1 cm. The length of the slits will correspond to the width belt, the latter will fit into the resulting loop. For strength, the cuts are sheathed.

These two models have significant disadvantages: they are designed for a specific model of belts, and to remove them you need to unfasten the latter.

Preparing to sew

It is better to leave the knife so that the size of the camera does not change. The sheath is placed under the press. To speed up the process, you don’t have to wait for the first gluing to dry completely, but you need to give time for the glue to begin to harden.

After final gluing, the holes for stitching are marked. This is necessary in order to make a self-made knife case attractive. On a caliper with inserts or a regular caliper, a distance of approximately 5-7 mm is set. At a distance of 5 mm from the edge of the sheath, a line for the future seam is drawn.

With the same tools, marks of future holes are made on the line, starting from the tip and going to the mouth. For a clearer pattern, you can go through the awl again. To prevent water from accumulating in the case, the sheath is not stitched at the bottom. Holes are made using drilling machine, in the absence of which a drill is used. In this case, you need to monitor the perpendicularity of the cartridge; this will determine how good the seam will be.

To sew a leather sheath with your own hands, use two needles on one thread, which can be lubricated with any oil or soaked in paraffin. It is chosen approximately 3 times longer than the seam. When sewing, you can use one of two methods:

  • saddle;
  • machine.

The essence of the first method is as follows: first, insert a needle into the first hole, pull the thread to the middle, then into the second hole and pull the thread. Another needle is inserted into the second hole and the thread is pulled. The first stitch is ready, the needles are on opposite sides of the sheath. The next stitch is made in the same way: the first needle is threaded into the third hole on one side, the second needle into the same hole on the other side.

With this method, you should ensure that the second needle does not pierce the thread.

In another embodiment, the first needle is passed through the first hole and the thread is pulled halfway. It is not the sock, but the eyelet that is threaded into the second hole, until about halfway through the needle, after which it is pulled back a little. Thread a second needle into the resulting loop and pull the thread through. The first needle is pulled out and the thread is pulled until it begins to pull the thread of the second needle into the sheath, thereby hiding the interweaving of the threads. Further sewing is carried out in a similar way. The last stitch ends with a knot and the thread is flame soldered.

Completion of finishing

There is another way to make a sheath - two-seam. Already at the first stage it has differences. The sheath is made not from one, but from two pieces of leather. To do this, make one stencil, and two cuts are made on it. Everything else completely coincides with the first model.

After stitching, the ends of the seam are processed grinding machine. You can get by with just sandpaper. To do this, it is mounted on a board, and then the cut ends are processed manually. On final stage these places are covered with waterproof glue mixed with thinner. All that remains is to make the final touches to create a beautiful leather knife sheath. Shoe polish is used for this purpose.

Leather is not the only material that can be used to make a sheath. Even in ancient times, daggers were stored and carried in beautiful wooden products. They are made in a similar way; two blanks are cut out using a stencil. Usually hard woods are used: walnut, oak and the like. The inner part is hollowed out using chisels, then they are glued together. The surface is treated with sandpaper, sanded, and varnished. A well-made homemade sheath can not only be useful, but also bring great aesthetic pleasure.

Leather scabbard: brief instructions

You start making a leather sheath for a knife with your own hands from a template.

  • Take a piece of paper, fold it in half and attach a knife to it.
  • Trace it along the contour, leaving a seam allowance of 8-10 cm wide on the blade side.
  • Cut out the drawn template in such a way as to duplicate only the outline of the blade, leaving the outline of the handle alone. The whole point is that in real life this contour will play the role of a loop for fastening with a half ring. It is important to take into account that in the future the width of the “handle” matches the half ring that you will prepare.
  • Now ready-made template place on a piece of leather. Please note that at the junction of the belt and the sheath it should be narrower than the length of the fastening by about 3 cm, and “ears” should be left along the edges of the sheath. They will be the place for the button after the pattern is folded in half. Moreover, their size should be such that there is 2 mm of skin left around the button.
  • Provide two holes on internal corners. Place them in the place where the wide part of the pattern (under the sheath) meets the narrow part (under the handle). This is done so that during use the leather does not tear at the corners.

How to make a knife sheath with your own hands from leather? At first glance, everything is clear. But, nevertheless, this matter also has its own subtleties that will help you do it as best as possible.

Those who are familiar with making sheaths first-hand recommend:

  • Add a leather sheath with an insert. Plastic is suitable for this. To fold it in half, it is better to heat the fold line. After it is rolled up, both halves are made symmetrical using a file, repeating the shape of the knife blade.
  • To ensure that the sheath takes the shape of a knife, the cut leather is moistened for 20 minutes in warm water. After it softens, it is wrapped around a knife. It must first be wrapped in cellophane. The skin is fixed with clothespins and left there for a day.
  • During this time, you can make a suspension loop, and after the clothespins are removed from the sheath, glue it to Right place and then flash it.

Some hunters find wooden sheaths more comfortable than leather sheaths. They are especially popular in Siberia and the Urals. Their simple and reliable design makes it possible to quickly remove and insert the knife without unfastening the fasteners. Moreover, you can do this with gloves. Such sheaths cannot be pierced in a hurry if the knife hits unsuccessfully.

Due to the fact that the sample is made in the form of a funnel, which evenly narrows from the mouth to the tip of the blade, the handle is tightly fixed in the sheath, actually jamming there. To get the knife, you just need to grab the handle tightly and squeeze your fingers tightly. From such an effort, he literally jumps out of his sheath. Making sheaths using Ural-Siberian technology

Manufacturing process wooden scabbard takes place in several stages:

  • select small planks (2 pieces), the vertical size of which will correspond to the length of the knife, and the horizontal size will be equal to two thicknesses of its handle;
  • carefully process the boards, ensuring they are tightly adjacent to each other;
  • place a knife on each of them and trace its outline;
  • On the end part from the handle side, mark the sampling depth for it;
  • the wood should be selected along the contour, the finished sample should take the shape of a funnel, evenly tapering from the mouth of the sheath to the tip of the blade;
  • between the sheath and the blade, provide a small gap (3‒4 mm).

If you couldn't fit the mouth to the handle perfectly, don't despair. From the inside at the mouth, glue a strip of fabric, having previously impregnated it with epoxy. Wrap the knife in plastic and press the fabric well against the mouth of the sheath.

The final stage of processing the sheath

After the selection has been made and the mouth has been adjusted to the handle, making a knife sheath with your own hands enters the final stage:

  • plan the outside of the scabbard, leaving a wall thickness of about 5 mm;
  • Next to the mouth, leave a side with a cross-section of 5x5 mm in order to secure the suspension loops on it in the future;
  • to increase the strength of the sheath, wrap the area under the side with several layers of nylon thread, then impregnate it with epoxy resin;
  • make several holes in the lower part of the sheath (at the tip) and stretch the same thread through them to strengthen the product;
  • at your discretion, make a ventilation hole at the bottom (it may not exist);
  • now glue the prepared parts of the sheath;
  • After the glue has dried, sand the surface in a way convenient for you and saturate it with drying oil.

Additional elements and design of the scabbard

So, the knife sheath is completely made by hand and can be used for its intended purpose. In addition to them, a pendant or a belt loop is sewn from leather. Some people cover such a wooden case with leather for greater durability, but this, so to speak, is not for everyone.

The sheath can be left as is or used different finishes- burning, wood carving or inlay. It all depends on your taste.
