Very often, when arranging the courtyard of a private house or garden, a swing is installed. Similar designs are made of wood, car tires and other improvised materials. But in order to achieve a really high-quality result, use drawings and photos of garden swings made of metal with your own hands: the dimensions and performance characteristics of these products allow you to use them for a long time.

Classification of a do-it-yourself garden swing made of metal: photos and features

Various materials are used for the construction of metal structures. Therefore, there are so many design solutions. This is evidenced by numerous photos of do-it-yourself garden swings made of metal, which can be found on the Internet.

For the manufacture of structures, the following materials are used:

  • metal corners;
  • square profiles;
  • I-beams (steel beams);
  • pipes (round profile);
  • brands (aluminum profiles).

Before you start planning and developing drawings of a garden swing made of metal with your own hands, you need to decide on the type of future design. To do this, you can study ready-made systems offered by modern industry.

How to make a garden swing with your own hands from metal: photos and examples of products

If you are puzzled over how to make a do-it-yourself swing for children, take factory-made options as an example. Such products have a correctly calculated design and are represented by a large number of interesting design solutions. It will be enough for you to create a similar swing from improvised materials.

Classification of products from manufacturers:

  • constructions garden detached type. This type of product can be installed in any place that you consider suitable, since they do not need to make additional supports or hangers. A swing of this type can be not only metal, but also wooden;

  • sofa swing that can be used by both adults and children. In the second case, the product allows several riders to sit on the bench at the same time. Designs are comfortable and safe, equipped with a comfortable back. For a period of heavy rains or in winter, the swing is easily removed, since their design has a block structure. Products can be metal or wood;

  • designs, equipped with a folding back and a mosquito net. They can be used as children's metal swings for summer cottages. You can add other accessories to create additional comfort;
  • swings made by forging, which have many advantages.

Swings of this type are carried out mainly for installation in the territories of country houses. To create these products, you will need skills in handling a welding machine and metal, or you can hire an assistant. In this case, the swing turns out to be more durable and powerful than other options for metal structures. In addition, you get an original product that can become an interesting decorative addition to the landscape and exterior of the house.

Metal products made by forging are expensive. But it is justified by excellent decorative characteristics.

Characteristics of a do-it-yourself garden swing made of metal

Metal structures have the greatest number of advantages compared to products made on the basis of other materials. That is why on the Internet there are such a large number of photos and drawings of do-it-yourself metal swings for children.

Technical and operational characteristics of a metal-based swing:

  • long service life is one of the main advantages. The metal is not subject to the harmful effects of such factors as, for example, decay processes. Breakage due to drying out is also excluded;

  • practicality - environmental influences that are detrimental to buildings (ultraviolet radiation, rain and other types of precipitation) cannot affect the strength characteristics of the material;
  • reliability - due to the increased strength of the metal and its durability, the resulting structures are very strong;

  • budget - the metal in the purchase has a lower cost than high-quality wood (low-quality wood will not be able to ensure the strength of the product, so it is not used to create a swing);
  • a variety of modifications - the range of modern swings that can be purchased or made independently is extremely wide, which allows you to choose a design that fully corresponds to individual preferences.

Disadvantages of homemade metal swings

Despite the external attractiveness of metal products, by themselves they will not be able to harmoniously fit into the landscape of a summer cottage, as is the case with a swing made of wood. To do this, you will need to stylistically support their design by adding similar elements to the exterior of the house or garden.

One of the positive characteristics of the material, namely the hardness of the metal and its strong structure, can also be considered as a disadvantage. On the one hand, a strong and solid swing is what you need for a summer residence, on the other hand, they can cause serious injuries that a person can receive as a result of a blow. Compared to wood, which is soft in nature, metal is much more dangerous.

Metal products are susceptible to corrosion. Rust can lead to gradual deterioration, so the durability of the structure can only be ensured if proper care is taken. To prevent the occurrence of corrosion, it is enough to cover the metal in a timely manner with a layer of a coloring composition intended for metal surfaces and outdoor operating conditions.

Drawings and photos of do-it-yourself garden swings made of metal: dimensions and technology

DIY garden swings can have a different type of frame. Based on this feature, the following design options are distinguished:

  • collapsible;
  • welded.

Welded swing types require the use of a welding machine and other special equipment. As a result, you will get a strong and rigid supporting part, which will allow you to operate the structure for many years without any risk to health.

If you do not know how to handle a welding machine, choose a swing with a collapsible design. The principle of assembling the frame is to twist all the elements of the product with bolts and nuts. Anyone can do this kind of work.

A brief classification of garden swings with your own hands made of metal

The easiest way is to create a design according to the finished drawings of a garden swing with your own hands made of metal. Looking at the diagrams, you can see that the configuration of the supports is different.

The A-shaped frame base consists of two crossbeams, which are interconnected at the top. Approximately in the middle of their height there is a jumper. It is designed to increase the rigidity of the structure. There are supports without a jumper, which are L-shaped.

Another type of support is elements with a crossbar, forming a U-shaped base. Creating such a design takes less effort, but the swing is less stable. Their operation will be long and safe if the base supports are placed in deep wells in the ground and well concreted.

In addition, all metal products can be divided into two groups:

  • stationary - the supporting part of the swing is reliably concreted;
  • portable - fixed with anchor bolts or bent reinforcement, which is driven into the soil.

The technology of creating a swing with your own hands from a profile pipe

Hanging swings are considered the most common design options. They are convenient, practical and comfortable. Equip the product with a canopy that protects from direct sunlight. Thanks to this, the seat will not overheat, and the riding process will become even more comfortable.

For the manufacture of a canopy for children's swings made of metal with their own hands, textiles, tarpaulin, wood with soft tiles in the form of a roof can be used. But the most suitable material is cellular polycarbonate. Polycarbonate sheets are transparent, so it will not be dark under the canopy. At the same time, they perfectly scatter direct sunlight.

List of required tools and materials

Before you make a garden swing with your own hands, make sure you have the appropriate tools:

  • grinders;
  • building level and tape measure;
  • welding machine and protective equipment (for working with the machine);
  • electric drill;
  • a set of drills designed to work with metal and wood surfaces;

  • screwdriver;
  • a set of wrenches;
  • self-tapping screws designed to fix polycarbonate sheet.

For work, you will also need to purchase materials, namely:

  • metal profile (pipes and corner);
  • boards or bars of wood for assembling the seat;

  • bolts equipped with semi-secret type heads (for seat assembly);
  • washers and nuts for bolts (for seat assembly);
  • fastening elements made of stainless steel or galvanized (carabiners, suspension brackets on bearings, eyebolts, chains);
  • anchors or bent reinforcing bars with a large length (for fixing the structure on the base);

  • sheet of cellular polycarbonate (canopy roof);
  • protective means for the frame (primer with anti-corrosion properties and coloring composition for metal surfaces);
  • protective products for the wood from which the seat will be created (stain, varnish, a set of brushes for surface treatment).

Drawings and photos of do-it-yourself swings made of metal: preparatory stage

At this stage, the area for mounting the swing is selected, the dimensions of the structure are determined. The optimal size of the hanging bench is 1.5 m. This is enough to accommodate two people on the swing or lie down alone.

According to the drawings of a do-it-yourself garden swing from a profile, the design consists of the following elements:

  • a rectangular base frame at the base;
  • sidewalls made of a pair of pipes fastened together by welding;
  • a horizontal crossbar for hanging a bench.

This information will help with further assembly. Thanks to this structure, the structure acquires the necessary level of rigidity. By choosing the right width of the base, you can build a very stable product. Take the rule as the basis of your work: the larger the angle that is at the top of the triangle between the base and the sidewalls, the more stable the structure will be.

General dimensional parameters are calculated individually. Under them, the indicators regarding the polycarbonate visor and the hanging bench are adjusted. Experts recommend that it is mandatory to prepare drawings indicating all the dimensional parameters of the structure, so that it is more convenient to work with the material. Subsequently, this will save you from mistakes and save time.

Do-it-yourself assembly according to the drawings of a swing from a profile pipe: frame part

It is recommended to start work on assembling the frame from the side parts. To do this, on the basis of the drawings, you need to mark the pipes and cut them with a grinder. Check for dimensional accuracy before assembly. All four elements of the sidewalls must be similar to each other. They need to be connected in pairs using the welding method. As a result, you should get two identical L-shaped parts.

Further, the sharp end, located at the top of each of the parts, is sawn off at the same level. This procedure is performed so that a small support platform can be formed to fix the horizontal bar.

The width of the support frame (short side) must correspond in size to the distance that is formed between the paired pipes of the side parts of the structure. The sidewalls are welded to the rectangular support frame with a welding machine, and then the horizontal crossbar (over the side racks).

All stages of assembling the frame part must strictly obey the laws of geometry: the side racks have a vertical type of arrangement, the horizontal crossbar (beam) intended for hanging the bench runs parallel to the base. Use the building level to control assembly parameters.

Assembly technology of a wooden swing seat

Bench assembly is an important stage of construction. Especially if you create a do-it-yourself children's swing made of metal according to the drawings. The seat should be based on a frame base made of a steel corner. To get a bench with a comfortable back, position it at a certain angle in relation to the seat. The size of the optimal angle is 120°.

To perform the correct bending of the corner, make a cut in the form of a triangle (60 °) on one shelf. The frame part for the seat is made of a rectangular metal profile using the welding method. The side parts should be connected along the edge zones using horizontal jumpers. The connection zone should also be in the place where the structure bends.

Whether you are designing a DIY swing for kids or making a swing for adults, the back and seat must be completely smooth. For these purposes, wooden blocks or boards, carefully processed with sandpaper (first with large grains, then fine ones), are suitable.

The boards are cut to the required size and fastened to the frame through pre-made holes with bolts so that their heads are recessed. Before the final assembly of the structure, the wooden elements are treated with an antiseptic and varnish, and the metal elements with a primer and paint.

Eye bolts are mounted in the corners of the frame part of the bench. Chains will be attached to the ears of these bolts with carabiners or threaded couplings. To hang the bench, you will also need to install eyebolts at the corners of the product or above the edges of the seat.

Making a visor for the structure

The manufacturing process of the visor is optional. But if you create a do-it-yourself swing design for children, you should think about comfort and protection from the scorching sun, as well as precipitation.

To do this, you need to make a rectangular structure, which will be based on a metal frame, reinforced with jumpers. A sheet of cellular polycarbonate is fixed on top of the structure. The visor is mounted at a slight angle, so that the precipitation will flow down freely.

Take several metal profiles with a small square section to complete the frame part of the visor. All these elements are fastened by welding, after which the visor can be attached to the upper frame part of the swing. This is also done using a welding machine.

When all assembly work is completed, the design is subject to final processing. The surface of the swing is covered with a primer, after which it is painted in any color you like.

The final stage of construction

When the paint is completely dry, a polycarbonate sheet is attached to the visor frame. To do this, use self-tapping screws with sealing washers.

A wide range of colors is one of the advantages of polycarbonate. You can choose the color of the visor to match the color of the swing or, conversely, make it contrast. Moreover, the color of the material has a direct impact on the level of scattering of sunlight.

The finished product must be securely fixed on a concrete platform. If the installation of the structure is carried out on soil with a high density, several clamps made of reinforcing bars can be used to fix the frame. You should first sharpen the ends of the clamps, which will allow you to easily drive the rods deep into the ground by 0.5 m.

As fasteners on a concrete site, it is better to use anchor bolts. They are installed in advance in the appropriate places. After tightening the nuts, cut off the excess thread with a grinder. This completes the construction of the structure.

The scheme of the swing and the necessary materials

Since the main task is to build the simplest garden swing, their scheme should not be complicated. However, most often swing schemes involve a more complex construction method, in which it will be necessary to use a welding machine.

Therefore, the construction of a U-shaped garden swing (Fig. 2), the posts of which will be dug in, is the easiest option, since it can do without welding.

Figure 2. Racks of U-shaped garden swings dug into the ground. Their installation is the easiest option, since it can do without welding.

Swing device and their elements:

  1. Vertical strips in the amount of two pieces 3.5 meters long, which will be required for swing poles. The best option is to use a profile pipe with a cross section of 60 * 60 mm or more. These pipes need to be dug in at 1 meter, and so that they do not loosen, they are concreted with a solution. So, the swing will be about 2.5 meters high. You should be aware that a profile pipe, compared to a round one, has a greater margin of safety.
  2. The horizontal bar will be a square metal pipe with a section of 60 * 40 mm. The length of the pipe must not exceed 2 meters and depends on the desired width of the seats. It should be placed vertically with the larger side, as this will give a greater indicator of bending strength. To fix it to the vertical posts, it is better to use M16 bolts with a spring lock nut.
  3. For seats, use a corner with a size of at least 40 * 40 mm. Its length depends on the presence of the back. For seats without it, the length of the corner can be 40 cm, with a backrest - 80 cm.
  4. The seats themselves will be suspended from a horizontal bar using a galvanized chain. It will be attached to carabiners.

Having designated all the goals, having collected and prepared the necessary elements, you can proceed to the practical component of the process.

Pole installation

For strength, the pit under the pole must be at least 1 m deep, and after installing the pole, cement mortar and crushed stone are used.

In order to properly install the pillars, you first need to dig a hole. The height of the pit was indicated above and is approximately 1 meter. Since it should be narrow, and it will be difficult to do this with a shovel, it is better to use a drill. With it, you can easily do this work by making a slight expansion at the bottom for greater tenacity and durability of concreting.

Pour some gravel into the bottom of the pit and set the post correctly using a plumb line or level. Then fill it with gravel to the end and tamp.

To facilitate the task, you can use a home-made rammer - a log with a handle made from a piece of timber measuring 50 * 50 mm. The handle must be fixed as tightly as possible. To do this, use long nails or screws. This tool looks like a T-shaped pusher. It will also be useful in carrying out further work on the site.

After making sure that the pillars are installed correctly and motionless, we fill the pit using a cement-sand mortar. For these works, cement grade 100 is suitable, which should be mixed using the correct proportions. It does not matter if you choose another brand of cement, they are more expensive, but their quality is much better.

Horizontal bar and seats

Using a 16mm drill, drill holes in the plank and bolt to the posts with a spring lock nut. To secure the chains horizontally, use the eye bolts, securing them with lock nuts on both sides.

The place where the eyebolts will be needs to be reinforced, as under heavy load they can deform the bar and break through the hole. Use pieces of metal profiles of the same size for this.

If you chose a lighter option, then use a seat without a back:

  1. Each corner on the one hand should have two holes for carabiners for the chain, on the other - the required number of holes for attaching the beam.
  2. Bars measuring 50 * 50 mm must be planed and tightened with bolts. Use countersunk head bolts.

Swing seats can be made both without a back and with a back, but for this it is necessary to bend the metal corners at the right angle.

You can also replace the timber with thick plywood, 15mm will be enough. Just before that, it will need to be soaked with drying oil, which should be heated in a water bath. This is necessary to increase the resistance to moisture. Impregnation should be done at least two times.

To make a seat with a back, you need to pay a little more attention. Corners 80 cm long should be bent at the desired angle. Considering that the swing is made without a welding machine, the process of creating seats with a back looks like this:

  1. Select any edge and make a triangular cut closer to the center. The desired angle is equal to the subtraction from 180°. For example, if you want a 100° angle, cut a triangle with an 80° angle.
  2. Bend the corner at the cutout.
  3. On the smaller side, drill holes in increments of about 15 cm.
  4. Fix the position of the corner with a plywood pad using the same countersunk bolts.
  5. Cut off excess thread near the nut.

Back to index

Securing chains

Since the design involves two seat options, the length of the chains must be selected for each separately. Seats without a backrest should hang horizontally, and with a backrest - with a slope of about 15 °. The slope is towards the back.

For fastening, use galvanized or stainless steel carabiners. There will be a carbine with a latch on a spring or with a threaded sleeve - it does not matter.

No need to make the seats too high, the height above the ground should not exceed 50 cm.

If you choose a carabiner with a spring latch, be sure to check for a hook on it. It is designed to avoid possible deformation under heavy load. This is very important, because safety is the main rule of this design.

The topic of this article is do-it-yourself metal garden swings. It is aimed at the unpretentious owner of the garden plot, who wants to acquire a swing with minimal time and effort. In particular, we have to do without welding: the entire structure will be assembled with bolts.

Device

So, what can be the device of the simplest swing?

  • The basis of the design will be two vertical racks made of a profile pipe with a size of at least 60x60 mm. It will be dug in and concreted. Height above ground level - 2 - 2.5 meters; underground will be at least a meter long pillars.

Please note: we chose the profile pipe because, with the same mass per meter (on which the price of the pipe depends almost linearly), it provides greater rigidity.

  • Horizontal crossbar - a rectangular pipe with a size of 60x40 and a length of 1.5 - 2 meters (depending on the expected width of the seat). Its large side will be oriented vertically, since this is the direction in which the load vector will be directed. It will be attached to the posts with M16 bolts with grovers and lock nuts, which will prevent the threads from unwinding.
  • The basis of the seat will be a pair of pieces of a corner measuring 40x40 and 40 (for a seat without a back) or 80 (for a seat with a back) centimeters long.
  • The seat will be hung on a galvanized chain with carabiners. From below, the carabiners will be hooked on the holes drilled in the corner; there will be two eyebolts on top for them.

Please note: unfortunately, do-it-yourself drawings of garden metal swings found on the net are focused on the use of welding and are unsuitable for our purposes.

Getting Started

So the goals are set. Let's move on to a more practical plane - to technical problems and their solutions.

pillars

Work on their installation begins with digging pits. And, as usual, a problem immediately arises: a deep and narrow hole cannot be dug with a shovel.

The solution is to use a garden drill. We have already mentioned the depth of the pits - about a meter; it is preferable to use a drill that can expand the pit at the bottom level: expanding the concreting will prevent the heaving soil from pushing out the pillars when it freezes.

The bottom of the pit is covered with a thin layer of rubble; then the pillars are set on a plumb line, after which the pit is covered with rubble. The backfill is compacted with a manual rammer.

Useful: the simplest rammer is obtained from a piece of log or timber.
A handle made of a 50x50 bar, planed along the edges under a round timber, is attached to one of the ends with long self-tapping screws or nails.

After the pillars are securely fixed in a vertical position, the compacted rubble is poured with a liquid cement-sand mortar. As a rule, concrete of M100 strength grade is used for concreting pillars. When preparing concrete yourself, you should adhere to the following proportions:

Strength grade The ratio of cement M400, sand and gravel
M100 1: 4,6: 7,0
M150 1: 3,5: 5,7
M200 1: 2,8: 4,8
M250 1: 2,1: 3,9
M300 1: 1,9: 3,7
M400 1: 1,2: 2,7
M450 1: 1,1: 2,5

crossbar

Holes are marked and drilled with a 16 mm drill; then the crossbar is bolted on (as already mentioned, with grovers and locknuts). The eye bolts are inserted into the holes drilled vertically in the crossbar and are secured with lock nuts on both sides.

Seat

The instructions for assembling a seat without a back are not difficult:

  • On one side of each corner, a pair of holes are drilled for suspension carabiners, on the other, a series of holes for attaching seat bars.
  • Planed bars with a section of 50x50 are attracted to the corner with bolts with semi- countersunk heads. Size - M6 - M8.

By the way: with a small (no more than 60 cm) seat width, thick plywood (15 - 18 mm) can be used instead of a bar.
To protect against moisture, it is pre-impregnated with drying oil heated in a water bath; impregnation is performed at least twice.

How to bend a corner for a seat with a back without welding?

  1. A triangular cut is made in one of its sides. The cutout angle is equal to the difference of 180 degrees and the estimated angle between the back and seat.

  1. In the place of the cutout, the corner is bent.
  2. Holes are drilled in the side with a cutout in increments of 15 cm.
  3. The position of the corner is fixed with a plywood pad on the bolts already familiar to us with semi-countersunk heads M6 - M8.
  4. Excess threads protruding from the nut are cut flush.

chains

Their length is selected in such a way that the seat without a backrest is strictly horizontal, and the seat with a backrest is tilted back by 10-15 degrees. For fastening, galvanized or stainless steel carabiners with a spring latch or a threaded sleeve are used.

Painting

How to paint our design?

  • An affordable and time-tested solution is PF-115 alkyd enamel. Under it, steel is primed with glyptal primer GF-021; the surface is pre-cleaned with a metal brush.
  • The so-called rubber paint is very interesting for these purposes. It can be applied over the same GF-021 or without prior priming. The dye adheres well to both steel and wood surfaces.

Is it possible to paint plywood that has been pre-impregnated with linseed oil for greater water resistance?

Yes, but with a couple of caveats.

  • Only oil paint will fall on the oiled surface. Of course, in our case, it is worth using dyes for the street (their number starts with the number 1).

  • Plywood is polished not only before painting, but also after applying the first layer. When moistened, a pile rises on the surface of the veneer, which will make the dried coating rough to the touch.

rust converter

Perhaps, within the framework of our material, it is worth mentioning another excellent tool that helps to make the paintwork of steel as strong and durable as possible.

If it is relatively easy to clean a profile pipe from rust, then it is sometimes much more difficult to prepare a forged swing for a garden with a complex shape for painting. A rust converter will come to the rescue - a reagent that converts Fe2O3 and other compounds that make up rust into an exceptionally strong and chemically stable film that prevents further corrosion.

On top of the surface treated in this way, any paint can be applied without any additional preparation and even without priming. The only subtlety associated with the use of a reagent: sheet rust will still have to be removed manually beforehand.

Conclusion

We hope that our recommendations will be useful to the reader and help him build his own with minimal time and money. As usual, the attached video in this article contains additional thematic information. Good luck!

In various ways, you can achieve comfortable conditions for relaxing in the country. Along with beautiful gazebos and comfortable benches, do-it-yourself garden swings for a summer cottage are of no small importance.

A swing is a place where you can ride, relax, and sit when there are no other places in the garden. A photo of a swing in the country with your own hands can be easily seen on the Internet, and a number of rules or instructions will help you create such a useful product without much effort.

And note that such a swing is intended not only for children, but also for adults. The most important thing is to correctly calculate the weight for which the future swing is intended, as well as to correctly build a safe and reliable swing design.

Classification and properties

Usually, swings for summer cottages are made from traditional materials such as wood and metal. To decorate the external characteristics of an object or to give reliability and safety to the structure, elements of decorative forging are often used in work. Also used at work:

  • bars;
  • elastic and durable rope;
  • metal pipes;
  • plastic;
  • old armchairs or chairs without legs, which serve as the basis for future swings;

For a successful result, of course, you should first make drawings of the swing, as well as an approximate model.

Garden swings can be created in absolutely different forms and types. An original and comfortable swing will also be an excellent option for decorating a garden or landscape of any country house.

mobile swing

They are a lightweight structure, so moving such a swing from one place to another is very convenient and fast. For example, during rain or in winter, you can move such a swing to the veranda. The size of such a swing is not so big.

family swing

The design of such a swing is already more durable and massive. They are endowed with a high and wide back, and in appearance they look like large benches for relaxing, only without legs. Therefore, they are called so, since all family members can fit on such a swing.

In order to ensure a high level of reliability during the operation of the swing, the swing is fixed on a frame, most often U-shaped. The swing is fixed due to tight chains or cables.

You can also build a roof over such a swing so that they don’t get wet during the rain, and enjoy nature while riding on a swing.

Do-it-yourself children's swing

A separate group of products, which in most cases is a boat or an armchair hanging in the air. Children's swings must comply with all standards of reliability and safety.

Suitable for adult children, and small ones can only be used with the help of parents.

The size of the garden swing in most cases depends only on you. You can also make a children's swing in large sizes.

By type of construction, the swing is also variable:

Swing in the shape of a hammock. Such swings are located on the crossbars made of wood or metal. A person who sits on such a swing feels that he is floating above the ground. On such a swing, it is especially great to read books and listen to music.

Single swing. Designs can be variable, and the installation of crossbars is not even required. The installation of such a swing is not a very complicated process. You can install them absolutely anywhere. Most often it is a swing made of pipes. We are talking about metal pipes.

Hanging swing. Question: "How to make such a swing?" does not have a complicated answer, because everything is very simple.

Note!

A swing is an ordinary seat that is suspended on several ropes or chains. As a rule, fastenings are located on the sides.

You see how many options for creating a garden swing you have in your arsenal.

The key point, of course, is to take care of safety while relaxing on a swing. All possible circumstances should be taken into account, and the swing should be provided with maximum reliability and comfort.

Do not forget also about the aesthetic properties of creating a swing. Beautiful and original swing, made in a special style, will attract the eyes of neighbors and guests, and children and relatives will enjoy the pleasure of relaxing on such a swing.

Photo of a swing for a summer house with your own hands

Note!

In most cases, the arrangement of a summer cottage is correlated with the installation of a swing. To assemble such equipment, various materials are used, among which ordinary boards and car tires can be mentioned. This approach is common, but not rational, since there are special drawings that facilitate the installation of a swing structure made of metal. If you follow them clearly, you can assemble a device for a pleasant pastime, which are ordinary swings.

Most of these structures are due to the presence of a frame and a variety of metal elements. Such devices are divided into two types:

  • welded;
  • collapsible.

The first option is the most problematic in terms of installation at home. This is due to the fact that it requires special equipment in the form of a welding machine, as well as the ability to use it. Otherwise, a welded construction is the best solution, as it provides high strength and sufficient rigidity to guarantee a long service life of the installed oscillator.

At the same time, a collapsible frame allows any home craftsman to assemble it without the proper skills and special equipment. At the same time, such a structure is not without drawbacks. Whatever the threaded connection, it becomes loose over time, which leads to a loss of structural rigidity.

As a result, a backlash is created, as a result of which the swing does not just begin to shake, but becomes a source of danger to human life and health, as it can collapse at any moment. Hence it becomes necessary to use locknuts and Grover washers in order to ensure the required stability of the device for swinging.

Depending on the configuration of the supports, the structure may have:

  • a frame resembling the letter A, where two crossbars are installed in such a way that they close from above, and a transverse beam gives them rigidity, which makes the swing look like the mentioned graphic sign; there are also L-shaped structures without a jumper;
  • a frame in which the crossbars are connected in the form of the letter P; this option is less stable against the background of low labor costs, since the installation of such a swing is more simple; to give the U-shaped devices sufficient strength, it is required to take care of the high-quality concreting of the supports.

Such structures can also be divided into the following types:

  • stationary, which cannot be moved due to the fact that their supports are concreted;
  • portable, connected by means of anchor bolts.

Children under 6

Toddlers are lightweight, which allows you to create simple swings in terms of design. At the same time, do not forget about the proper level of security, which should be as high as possible. For a swing of this type, a pipe with a diameter of more than 50 mm is suitable. Before proceeding with the assembly, care should be taken to draw up a detailed drawing.

An L-shaped structure, having a height of 1.5 to 2 m, is quite appropriate in this case. It is optimal if the swing is implemented as a portable version, which is achieved by welding a square base.

Next, a metal rod is used, which is bent so that it takes the form of a hook. The length of such a blank should be approximately 1 m, taking into account the fact that about 50 cm of the rod will be underground. To ensure acceptable stability, it is enough to fix the swing at four points.

How to fix the seat

To install the seat, it will be necessary to provide the possibility of attaching the suspension, which can be done as follows:

  • apply clamps of the corresponding profile, supplemented with a hook for the fastener element;
  • make holes in the crossbar and install anchor bolts in them with a loop fixed at the end;
  • mount bearings, which are a reliable way of fixing, but require constant lubrication to avoid annoying squeaks.

The seat itself is directly suspended by a rope made of synthetics (climbing equipment), a chain or a metal cable (automobile). In this case, it is not recommended to use household appliances. If the option with a chain is chosen, it is necessary to use a product made of galvanized steel. A simple design will rust, while painting it will be quite problematic.

The best seat material is wood. If it is planned to install a large seat, then a metal frame is required.

Bolted construction

If it is not possible to use a welding machine, it is recommended to assemble the structure in the form of the letter P on bolts. To do this, you need a profile having a section of 60 by 60 mm. The choice of just such a product is due to the fact that it has greater strength compared to a round-shaped design. The supports should have a length of about 3 m, taking into account the fact that about 50 cm will go into the ground to give the required stability.

The estimated swing height is 2 m. As for the length of the crossbar, a certain variability is available here, depending on how many seats are supposed to be installed and what size they are. One frame allows mounting up to 3 seats. The material is the same - a profile with a section of 60 by 60 or 60 by 40 mm.

The crossbar is fixed on the racks by means of bolts, supplemented with locknuts and washers Grover. To do this, using a special drill, the required holes are prepared, which are strengthened by thick metal plates installed from the inside.

To complete the installation, it is enough to fix the seat on the suspension.

Swing in the form of a bench

The design of such swing devices is somewhat different from what was described above, since in this case a large load must be taken into account. Such a structure must withstand not only a massive seat, which is a bench, but also the weight of several people. The supports here are placed much wider, and a pipe of greater thickness is used as racks.

For better comfort, a canopy can be built over the swing to protect it from the sun's rays, which can be made of wood, fabric or polycarbonate. In addition, additional comfort will create soft pillows.

Manufacturing instructions

Almost any type of swing can be made by yourself as the process is quite simple. We will consider a somewhat complicated version of the device due to the fact that it involves the use of welding. Such work is performed in a certain sequence:

  1. Cutting parts from pipes: side racks 2 m long, crossbars - from 1.5 to 2 m; preparation of 4 cylindrical products of arbitrary length, which are necessary for the assembly of the base.
  2. Cleaning pipes with a file or sandpaper to get rid of burrs.
  3. Welding structures for the base at right angles.
  4. Fastening the racks to the supporting part, then the crossbars to the vertical elements using a special apparatus.
  5. Digging 4 holes at least 80 cm deep.
  6. Insertion into the recesses of metal beams with a length exceeding their depth.
  7. Filling the pits with a solution prepared from cement, crushed stone, sand and water, taken in a ratio of 1: 1: 2: 2. In order for the concrete to gain the required strength, you should wait a week and only after that continue the installation work.
  8. Production of hooks for suspension by means of anchors with their subsequent welding.
  9. The connection of the assembled frame with metal beams sticking out of the ground using a special apparatus.
  10. Seat installation.

The second option for making a swing

pillars

For greater reliability, the sidewalls of the structure are recommended to be made in the form of the letter A. But the frame can also be assembled from single products that serve as a support, and the corners installed at the bottom give it the required stability. The most common option is when a base is first welded from pipes in the form of a rectangle, to which two vertical triangles are attached, and a jumper, thereby achieving a visual correspondence with the letter A. If we exclude the metal base, which turns the swing device into a mobile structure, care must be taken about concreting racks.

crossbar

The established triangles are complemented by a crossbar. The structure created in this way is fixed with the help of prepared trenches or pits, observing alignment in both planes. Then the recesses are filled with concrete, which needs to be given some time to completely harden.

Seat

An adult-oriented swing mainly looks like a standard bench without legs. If such a device is intended for children, it is recommended to install a single or double seat.

chains

Despite the fact that the arrangement of suspensions from chains is an expensive pleasure, this must be done, since such structures are characterized by maximum strength, contribute to buildup and are caused by pronounced signs of wear, which allows you to notice critical wear in time. If the swing is aimed at children, small-caliber chains should be suspended to eliminate the possibility of pinching fingers.

Painting

The final assembly of the structure must be completed by applying a special composition. This makes the assembled device more attractive and protects it from corrosion.

rust converter

To prevent the destruction of metals, a rust converter is used, the application of which ensures the formation of a barrier film on the path of aggressive environmental influences. Usually this composition is applied to the metal before painting.

Swing ball bearings

With the help of ball bearings, you can create a structure that will serve for decades. The use of these elements in the design eliminates friction, which determines the durability of such structures, also eliminating the appearance of creaking.

It is known that a swing in the form of the letter A is the most optimal design, but it takes up a lot of space. We will consider the installation of U-shaped devices, the stability of which is given by the assembled support.

For work you will need:

  • a pipe with a diameter of about 70 mm, necessary for the installation of the main structural elements;
  • corner 20 mm for auxiliary racks;
  • corner 40 mm for braces;
  • corner 63 mm for fixing the crossbar.

After that, you can proceed directly to the installation of the planned structure, which involves the following set of actions:

  1. We dig in accordance with the markings of 6 holes with a depth of at least 70 mm.
  2. We expose the pillars-supports strictly vertically using the building level. All parts of the structure that will be buried in the ground should preferably be coated with bituminous mastic.
  3. We weld a horizontal support from a corner of 63 mm.
  4. We install L-shaped elements in the pits along the perimeter and weld them to the horizontal guide.
  5. Pour concrete into the holes.
  6. We proceed to the assembly of the assembly based on bearings.

For mounting parts of the support, a metal tape 3 mm thick is used, which must be bent. Then a pipe is inserted into the bearings and scalded a little, taking into account not to touch the support elements themselves, as this can lead to their failure. The bearings are fastened to the tape by means of pieces of corners that are welded to a narrow strip.

The supporting pillars and swinging parts of the structure must be separated from each other at a distance of at least 50 cm. This need is due to safety requirements so that the child's hand does not fall between these elements.

At the final stage of assembly, it remains only to weld the remaining parts of the structure, including the braces, which must be short enough to reduce the dimensions of the assembled device. The stability of the structure in this case is maintained due to the presence of a sufficient number of support points and the use of a 70 mm pipe.

Swing option on bearings

Let's break down the process of working on arranging such a structure for swinging in stages.

Stage I

Frame manufacturing. To do this, you need pipes 50 and 63 mm. First, a U-shaped structure is assembled from two products with a diameter of 63 mm and a length of about 3 m each, to which a cylindrical part with a cross section of 50 mm is welded horizontally. The diagonals of the resulting letter P should be the same.

Stage II

Bearing fastening. To install the assemblies, it is required to cut 5 cm parts from a 90 mm pipe, and then insert bearings into them and scald them, achieving a narrowing of the diameter. This makes it possible to hold the support parts in the pipe, which must be supplemented by welding metal elements from the outside. After that, a 27 mm pipe must be inserted into the resulting structure.

Stage III

Holes for suspensions and welding of the device. Plates with holes for attaching a hook must be attached to a 27 mm cylindrical part using a special apparatus. Then the assembled structure is welded to the crossbar of the letter P using small flat elements. This process requires care, as bearings are installed inside. The place of their installation should be lubricated with grease, and during the application of welding, water should be used for cooling in order to prevent damage to the assemblies.

Stage IV

The finished frame is installed in prepared pits and concreted. A seat frame is made from a profile pipe 20x20x2 mm, which involves the use of welding.

Stage V

The resulting structure is ennobled with polished boards that are bolted. After that, the frame is attached to the chains by welding, and they, in turn, are hung on the frame. To do this, you can use carabiners, which makes it easy to adjust the length of the chains.

Stage VI

Painting the assembled swing device.
