The loss of the original aesthetic appeal of a wooden door is not a reason to part with it. Why waste savings if all options for its restoration are available to craftsmen ignorant of the intricacies of woodworking. It is certainly difficult to master the secrets of cabinetmaking in a couple of days, but painting wooden doors will not cause any difficulties. However, there are nuances in this simplest matter, without knowledge of which it is difficult to achieve an ideal result.

How will we paint our wooden door?

The choice of compositions for coloring wood is very extensive. First of all, let's decide whether it is desirable to preserve and highlight the natural beauty of a natural array or whether it is necessary to completely hide the texture pattern by covering it with a continuous opaque layer. Taking into account our own taste preferences, we will pay attention to:

  • opaque enamels and coloring compositions with acrylic, polyurethane, alkyd, perchlorovinyl and obsolete oil bases, which are rarely found in domestic products;
  • transparent and tinted varnishes, oil impregnations, stains that refresh the color of wood or give new shades.

We won’t talk about taste priorities. Let’s just listen to the advice of experienced painters who recommend that home craftsmen purchase:

  • acrylic paints with a water base, because they have an optimal consistency for working with a brush, excellent spreadability and decent hiding power, somewhat inferior to oil paints;
  • alkyd paint and varnish products, characterized by high water-repellent qualities, resistance to temperature fluctuations and drying speed.

Important. All dyes with an alkyd resin base are applied only to a completely dry surface. If the wood is wet, the paint layer will peel and peel due to air bubbles formed underneath.

Those who want to find out how to paint a wooden door have no doubt guessed that painting is carried out in several stages. Often using two different formulations. First, impregnation is used with or without a tinting effect, then a decorative coating is applied. It is important to choose formulations that work flawlessly in tandem. For example, drying oil is not applicable before varnishing. Only stain!

Even if you decide to refresh the color of the canvas and jambs exclusively with stain or oil impregnation, one layer is not enough. Two or three stages remain to be completed, the surface will tell you. You will have to paint as many times as necessary for the perfect result.

Sequence of the painting process

Since the list of components of the door structure includes not only the door leaf, the stage preceding the entire action is the competent preparation of the object. You can, of course, limit yourself to painting only the canvas, but then the jambs with the lintel will be different. This means that home craftsmen who decide to paint the doors with their own hands need to do this:

  • remove the door leaf from the hinges and place it on two stools, a work table or sawhorses. If you plan to use a caustic alkyd composition, it is advisable to place it in the yard, on the terrace or balcony;
  • Without removing the panel, block it with wedges so that the panel brush has access to all door elements. Locking is also necessary so that the door does not accidentally close during the drying period, and the dye layer is not irreparably damaged.

It is recommended to remove the canvas, but if it is impossible to do according to the rules, then we will use the second option. The fittings also need to be dismantled. In a hopeless case with non-removable hinges, handles should be wrapped in paper and secured with tape, but it is better to wrap them in foil so that all parts are tightly sealed. It is better to fix the lock mechanisms and seal them with tape.

Preparing the wooden surface

The most significant multi-step process that requires diligence in order for coloring to give the desired result. We will prepare according to the following standard scheme:

  • First, we remove all layers of paint, primer and putty materials down to the wood. For those who are not afraid of dust and dirt, you can use a grinding machine or a homemade device made from a handy block with medium-grain sandpaper glued or nailed to the working side. It’s easier for owners of construction hair dryers; they heat it up and remove the bubbled paint with a spatula. There is also a simple, but expensive method - special wood removers.
  • Then we undergo initial sanding, as a result of which small dents, paint residues and scratches are eliminated. We sand with a machine connected to a vacuum cleaner, or simply with medium-grain sandpaper.
  • We putty large imperfections by purchasing a putty that matches the wood if we plan to cover the door with a transparent composition: oil, stain, varnish. If we paint with opaque enamel, it is not necessary to select the color of the putty. Don't forget about the gaps between the decorative elements of the canvas and the canvas itself, between the jamb and the lintel.
  • We maintained the period indicated by the putty manufacturer in the manual and sanded it a second time with sandpaper. First, we use a machine attachment or a simple abrasive cloth with medium grain, and at the finish we use a fine-grained analogue.

Advice. Deep dents under opaque paint can be repaired with auto putty, which does not contain fiberglass.

Note. Natural wood that has darkened under a layer of old paint or varnish can be lightly bleached with a mixture of one part bleach and bleach with three parts water.

Everything was processed, cleaned of old varnish or paint, and any putty that had come out. We vacuum, wipe with a damp cloth, dry, and start painting.

Painting a door without special effects

That is, at the beginning of the creative path of a future phenomenal painter and cabinetmaker, we will not get carried away with artificial aging. We will not create the impression of photo wallpaper or a painted array with uncovered structural lines. At the initial stage, we will learn how to paint the door evenly without frozen smudges or spots visible under the varnish.

This video will demonstrate how to paint using a sprayer:

If you only have to paint one or two doors, purchasing a sprayer is not cost-effective. We will stock up on a narrow panel brush for a canvas with the same name and a roller for all types of canvas.

Note. Before starting the work process, the brush needs to be fluffed up; all loose hairs need to be helped to come out and be removed.

Let's decide on the type of construction and the painting scheme that depends on it:

  • The panel door is painted in three steps. It is more practical to use a roller; it will ensure uniformity and will not leave hairs. Let's start covering from the end, more precisely from the upper left corner of the canvas, directing movements to the right side. We paint the canvas until the very end, and dry it for as many hours as the manufacturer requires. The second step of coloring is carried out in the longitudinal direction, and the third in the opposite direction to the initial stage.
  • Let's start painting the paneled door with a brush. We will use it to go through the recesses in the canvas, trying to avoid an excess of paint. We complete the painting with a roller, following the steps listed above.

What to do if you decide to paint with stain?

The door prepared for painting needs to be slightly moistened, then the wood will not absorb moisture and the dye will lie smoothly with a very liquid consistency. We will paint everything that is located horizontally with stain first along the fibers, then in the transverse direction, and at the finish again longitudinally.

We will begin to cover the jambs and the canvas that has not been removed from the hinges from below, so that drops and splashes of dye do not fall on unpainted areas. This is what we do if we open the door with varnish. If the finishing composition is opaque, dark drops will not interfere at all.

After treatment with water-soluble stain, the wood fibers that have absorbed moisture are straightened. You will need to sand them with sandpaper after the first layer has dried. Then we will clean it from dust and cover it again.

Note. The wooden surface that has dried after painting is lighter than when the dye was applied. The richness of color is achieved by repeated opening.

Alcohol stain will not stimulate fiber straightening. There is no need to sand the door after treating it and it dries in half an hour. However, its water-soluble counterpart is considered a safer, completely non-toxic dye, and therefore more popular.

How to create imitation wood correctly

You can imitate a wood pattern on literally any material, for this:

  • we paint the canvas with yellow, light gray or light beige paint and dry it to the condition specified by the manufacturer of the coloring composition;
  • Using a brush, cover the entire area to be treated with liquid soap;
  • Apply a layer of dark paint that we like and wash off with liquid soap.

For DIYers who want to know how to paint a wood-effect veneer door or a budget-friendly plywood door, there is another way. To implement the idea, you will need a specific brush, which is now available in construction stores. Using movements similar to combing, we treat the soft fibers with this brush. We paint the treated surface with dyes of different colors. Thanks to changes in the structure, curls will spontaneously appear, creating the illusion of wood. After drying, sand the surface.

If you follow the rules, you can paint or varnish the door yourself without any problems. There will definitely not be any special complications along the course. Since the canvas has two sides, it is better to start testing strokes from the “wrong side”. Once you get the hang of it, you can restore not only doors, but also cabinets and other wooden and veneer furniture in a similar way.

Painting wooden doors is a common way to give an attractive appearance to interior structures. This operation makes it possible to update old canvases that have lost their original chic during use, and repaint new products in the required color shade, focusing on the interior created after the renovation. Coloring at home is carried out using various compositions using simple technology.

How can you paint doors?

Wooden structures perfectly absorb most modern decorative compositions. Therefore, it is allowed to restore interior doors made of solid pine, oak, linden, veneer, fiberboard and particle board (MDF and chipboard) with almost any composition:

  • Nitroenamels.
  • Acrylic and alkyd paints.
  • Colored varnishes.

Enamels of the first type are the best option for working with products that interest us. They make the door leaf resistant to external influences and durable in use.

The disadvantage of nitro enamels is their pungent odor. When dried, they release into the air compounds that are unsafe for people with poor health and allergies, which can worsen a person’s well-being. For this reason, painting with such compositions is carried out outdoors or in well-ventilated rooms.

Alkyd paint takes longer to dry (40–48 hours) than nitro compounds. It is inferior to them in terms of resistance to mechanical stress. The situation can be corrected by mixing it with a protective varnish. The main advantage of the described enamel is its affordable cost.

Acrylic mixtures do not have a strong odor. They are considered completely environmentally friendly. Their main disadvantage is their high price.

Colored varnishes are used to paint interior doors made of solid wood. These compositions emphasize the natural beauty of wood fibers and at the same time give it an unusual shade. They are not used for decorating structures made of MDF and chipboard.

Preparing for coloring - what needs to be done?

If you plan to change the color of the new door, the original paint should be removed. The canvas is treated with a special solution (sold in any hardware store), under the influence of which the coating of the structure swells and can then be easily cleaned off with a regular spatula.

Go over the bare base with fine-grained sandpaper. It should be used as carefully as possible so as not to damage the surface.

You will have to suffer with the old interior door. It must be removed from the hinges, all fittings must be dismantled, and the recesses for the locks and other technological holes must be filled with cotton wool. After this you need to perform the following steps:

  • Remove existing layers of varnish and paint using the solution mentioned above or by heating the surface with a hair dryer or blowtorch. The last two tools are not used when it comes to structures made of veneer, chipboard, and MDF.
  • Wash the doors thoroughly with water, dry (required time - 3-6 hours), degrease.
  • Sand the canvas with a machine and treat it with sandpaper.
  • Fill holes and other defects with putty. This is especially important when you plan to paint the doors white or apply a certain shade of varnish or glossy stain to the structure.
  • After the leveling compound has dried, prime the product.

If the interior structure in an apartment or house cannot be dismantled (for example, it was placed in a doorway along with a frame), newspapers should be laid under it, prepared and painted without removing it from its hinges.

Decorating tool – roller, brush or spray?

Doors are painted using well-known working devices. Experienced self-taught painters use a sprayer for these purposes. It guarantees fast and high-quality work. But such a tool is not available in every home.

If there is no spray gun, painting is done with a brush and roller. The use of the first is associated with certain problems. It leaves streaks, pieces of lint, and unevenly treated areas on the structure.

It is almost impossible to apply a thin layer of paint to an interior wood product with a brush. Therefore, it is used to decorate small areas of the door.

It is much more convenient to work with a roller. You need to choose an instrument with a fur coat. It is better not to take foam devices. They are corroded by nitro enamel and are not suitable for applying acrylic enamels with their help.

Do-it-yourself painting in a few simple steps

It is advisable to perform the operation wearing a respirator and protective gloves. The jar with the selected paint is opened, part of the composition is poured into another container, in which it is diluted with a solvent and stirred with a wooden stick.

The finished composition with the required consistency can be used for its intended purpose. Do-it-yourself door painting is done according to the following scheme:

  • With a brush, panels, glazing beads, areas near decorative overlays, and other hard-to-reach places are processed (along the fibers).
  • Using a roller, the main surface of the structure is painted.
  • After the enamel has been applied to the entire door, you need to wait for it to dry.
  • The canvas is turned over to the other side, which is painted according to a similar principle.
  • Lastly, the ends of the product are restored. The composition is applied to these areas as thinly as possible. Then the door leaf does not stick in the frame after restoration.

The final work is polishing. It is carried out with a sponge, which is attached to a grinder or electric drill.

It is recommended to apply the paint in two layers. The idea is that the first coat will make the wood slightly rough (the fibers will swell and become ruffled). The next layer will fill the small holes between the wood particles and make the surface truly smooth.

Locks and fittings are reinstalled after the door has dried. And the handles will be correctly inserted onto the structure already installed on the hinges.

Varnishing - what compositions are used?

Translucent and transparent varnishes are applied to wood for the purpose of additional protection from negative influences (temperature changes, high humidity). According to the degree of gloss (level of light reflection) they are divided into:

  • matte and semi-matte;
  • semi-, high- and regular gloss.

Varnishes are made on a water-based, oil-based, polymer, alkyd, urea or acrylic base. They are selected taking into account the composition of the paint used.

Colored compositions have a specific shade. The cost of such mixtures is quite high. It is more rational to cover the doors with stain, adding a suitable tinting component to it, and then treat the structure with transparent varnish. This is the most economical way to give the canvas the required decorative properties.

Original door color options

If a home craftsman has free time and is confident in his design talents, wooden structures can be made very bright and memorable. Examples of unusual painting are given below:

  • A stencil with a pattern is created. Applied to the surface of the interior product. The decorative composition is applied.
  • The door is painted with alternating stripes of different shades. This method is appropriate for structures located at the entrance to children's bedrooms and playrooms.
  • Thin polyurethane baguettes or wooden slats are carefully placed onto the canvas in the planned order. These inserts are decorated with a contrasting enamel color compared to the main one.

Some self-taught craftsmen paint doors in 3, 4 and even 5 shades, creating unique abstract paintings. To implement this technique you will need masking tape and several brushes. The roller is not used in such situations.

An unusual structure on an interior structure can be obtained in other ways. Widespread technology for applying paint strokes:

  • sponge with large pores;
  • compressed foil;
  • a piece of rough denim;
  • natural fur.

If you want to make an original door decor, you need to make sure that it turns out beautiful and is completely in harmony with the interior of the apartment or private house. Otherwise, the desire to stand out will lead to unpleasant results.

Features of working with laminated products - what to consider?

If wooden doors are covered with lamination, they cannot be painted over this layer. The enamel will easily adhere to such surfaces. But they won't last long.

From the structures described, the top coating is first removed (using a sander). After which they are smoothed with zero-grade sandpaper.

The cleaned door is treated with white spirit, an antiseptic and a primer are applied to it. After some time (3–4 hours), the wooden product is painted. After the enamel has dried, the surface is decorated with varnish.

Important nuance! When removing the lamination layer, you must act very carefully. If you go too deep into the structure, the wood will begin to crumble.

During long-term use, door leaves and frames lose their attractiveness as a result of wear or expiration of the decorative coating.

Painting a wooden door with your own hands will allow you to save money and acquire skills in installation and finishing work.

Types of paints

Currently, there is a huge selection of paints for painting wood. They are qualitatively divided into transparent and opaque. The first option is used if it is necessary to preserve the natural color of the wood and the visibility of the fiber structure. These include stains and impregnations that protect wood from insects and fungi.

Note!

They can add a slight tonality to the natural color, making the appearance more presentable.

The second option - opaque paint - is more in demand, since it allows you to achieve maximum compliance with the interior design of the room. These can be enamels and compositions based on acrylic, polyurethane, alkyds and oil.

Which paint to choose?

Acrylic enamels are most often used for interior work. They allow you to obtain optimal viscosity for ease of use with a brush: it spreads well, forming a thin, uniform layer and is able to maintain rich color throughout its entire service life. It does not have a strong odor and therefore even allergy sufferers can paint. Paint for external doors is selected based on the temperature characteristics of the climate, air humidity and amount of precipitation. In such cases, alkyd paint is simply irreplaceable, as it increases resistance to temperature changes, moisture and sunlight. Painting can dry much faster than other compositions. However, when working with it, you should use personal respiratory protection because it is toxic.

Before painting, you need to remove the fittings

Preparatory work

Before painting, it is advisable to remove the door from its hinges and place it on a horizontal, stable surface. It is advisable to cover it with paper or oilcloth so that dirt and dust do not get on the canvas. Then, using an industrial hair dryer with a wide nozzle, remove the old paint down to the wood. Use a hot stream of air to heat the old paint until it swells, after which it is easily scraped off. In hard-to-reach places, remove the nozzle and warm up the area, after which the paint layer is removed with a knife or small knife. Upon completion of work, grind with sandpaper or.

Should I remove the door or not?

It is convenient to paint the doors in the removed position, since the paint does not run off, drips do not form, and there is access to all the cracks and inconvenient places. You can assess the condition of the canvas more objectively and, if necessary, replace problematic parts. In addition, the room will be free of the pungent smell of solvent, paint and varnish. The time spent on dismantling is completely justified, since financial resources are saved on painting doors that are obviously unsuitable for use, and it will also be possible to carry out work in any convenient place. However, if the canvas is new, and painting is carried out only to change the color shade, then you can paint it right on the spot, having previously fixed the open position of the door.

Irregularities need to be puttied

Repairing small defects in the fabric

Before painting a wooden door, you need to hide possible defects, such as cracks, chips and places affected by pests. Take the putty and apply it to problem areas with a spatula in small quantities. Then it is carefully leveled. After drying, sanding is carried out using a zero polish. The surface is cleaned with a dry soft cloth to remove dust and then washed. It should be noted that only small defects can be hidden in this way. If there are rotten areas or serious cracks, it is recommended that a suitable piece be made from a similar type of wood and replaced.

What primer should I use?

Wood is absolutely necessary to improve water resistance, increase adhesion, especially of dense wood, and impregnate the outer layer to reduce paint costs. Before painting an old wooden door with opaque paint, apply alkyd primers and alkyd-based compounds diluted with water.

Note!

The color of the primer should differ from the main color by a tone or semitone in the light side, so as not to affect the external coating.

Under the transparent layer, oil- and water-based primers are used that have disinfectant, insecticidal and. In terms of color and type, they should have a great affinity with the decorative coating.

Carrying out monochromatic painting

The simplest option is to paint the canvas and box the same color. The brush should be fluffed before use to remove excess hair and make it soft. After this, painting is carried out in three stages. At the first stage, cover the ends of the door with a layer of paint, starting from the upper corners and ending with the lower, longitudinal movements of the brush. At the second stage, the plane of the canvas is painted from left to right. The paint should then dry according to the application instructions. After drying, apply a second layer of paint in the longitudinal direction from top to bottom. If the paint is partially absorbed, you can apply a third layer to obtain a rich color.

Applying multiple tones

For interiors with complex decorative elements, it may be necessary to apply several layers of different colors. Take tape and cover the entire surface that should not be covered by the main color. After drying, seal the painted parts and apply paint to the remaining areas. Painting the front door to a children's room in several colors is sometimes not enough and you have to create complex designs. First, stencils are made with adhesive applied to the back side. Painting is carried out in the main color, and when the paint dries, a stencil is installed and painted in additional tones. The disadvantage of this method is that the color of the substrate appears outward. Therefore, they select such patterns so that the background is lighter and subsequent layers are darker. This option is non-standard for painting wooden canvases, since they have a natural pattern, but is the simplest implementation of a complex pattern for doing it yourself. The sequence of work is as follows:

  1. The canvas is painted completely yellow using a single-color painting method in one or two layers.
  2. Using a brush, apply liquid soap evenly to all surfaces.
  3. A layer of dark paint is applied to imitate wood fibers.
  4. The soap is washed off.

Conclusion

Before painting an interior wooden door, you need to determine the operating conditions, requirements for surface quality and color. But before this, the front part of the canvas and the box should be processed accordingly. This will guarantee successful completion of the work and will significantly increase the service life of the door.

Repainting an old door is a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up the look of your home and add bright new colors to your decor. To make a high-quality, durable coating, you need to go through several stages of work. It doesn’t matter whether you repaint interior doors or entrance doors, the technology is the same. Although it must be taken into account that the adverse effects on external doors are much more serious, and it is necessary to choose paint specifically for external doors.

  • In most cases, before painting, the door is removed from its hinges and laid horizontally on trestles. This makes working much more convenient and results in a more uniform application of paint. You can, of course, paint the door without removing it from the hinges, only in this case you need to seal the hinges and lock handles with tape, and paint the door while it is open.

  • We place the door removed from its hinges on trestles and remove the hinges and locks. Now we need to determine the strength of the old coating; further actions depend on this, whether it is necessary to remove the old paint completely or limit ourselves to cosmetic repairs. If the paint is peeling and falling off in pieces, you will have to clean the entire surface. This can be done in two ways: Heat the coating with a construction hairdryer and cut it off with a spatula; in another option, the old layer is soaked with a special remover and also removed with a spatula.
  • Next you need to fill the cracks with putty and sand them out. If the door is in good condition, then we simply sand off the old paint to get a rough surface, otherwise the new paint may not adhere well and will quickly peel off. After sanding, carefully sweep away the dust; it is better to blow it out with a compressor.

  • The first layer is a primer, it can be a special composition, or a thinly diluted base paint. The primer should be thinner to penetrate the door leaf and provide a more durable coating of the base paint. The primer is the same type as the paint you choose. The paint can be oil, latex or acrylic. For external doors, oil paints are often used as they are more reliable.

  • We begin painting with a brush along the recesses of the panels; it is best to roll the flat parts of the door with a roller, so the layer is more uniform. Do not forget to dry each layer of primer and paint for the time indicated on the can and only then apply the next layer.

Minimum number of layers: primer + paint, more often a primer + 2 layers of paint are used, in some cases three layers of paint will be needed if the paint is liquid and does not paint over the old coating. What else to do with your own hands, look.

  • When the last layer of paint has dried, you can apply colorless polyurethane varnish on top. The varnish will give a good glossy shine and additional surface protection. After the first layer of varnish has dried, you need to go over the entire surface with fine micron sandpaper and then apply a second finishing coat. You can do the same on your own.

When installing new wooden doors in a bathhouse, you should immediately take care to protect them from negative influences. Steam, high temperature, and drafts from ventilation contribute to the deterioration of wood, its deformation and loss of visual appeal. Painting the doors will help you avoid this - a simple and effective method. The most important thing is to choose the right paint and apply it correctly.

Paint and varnish products are classified as follows:

  • by type – varnishes, paints and impregnations (oil, wax, stains, penetrating and film-forming);
  • by chemical composition - organic and water based;
  • by method of application - internal, external and combined;
  • in terms of protective effects - from temperature and humidity fluctuations, from mechanical damage, from chemical and organic irritants.

In addition, all coatings are divided into transparent and opaque. The first includes varnishes, glazes and oil impregnations, the second includes paints and enamels made on acrylic, alkyd, polyurethane and oil bases.

Type of wood processing compoundBasic properties
Suitable for painting interior and exterior doors, has high moisture resistance. Transparent, emphasizes the structure of the wood. Disadvantage: long drying time.
Safe for health, suitable for any wood, quick-drying. Provides high protection against ultraviolet radiation, gives the surface increased resistance to dirt and moisture.
The most harmless to health, non-flammable, used indoors. Not suitable for external doors. Preserves the natural texture of wood and its original color.
Easy to apply, penetrates the wood well, gives the wood a darker shade. Used for treatment before painting.
Penetrates deeply into wood, perfectly protects against moisture, fungus and dirt. Gives additional strength and a pleasant shine to the surface.
It is used for external and internal surfaces, creating a durable, dense coating with water-repellent properties. Has high hiding power with a glossy or matte effect.
It is easy to apply, has low hiding power, thanks to which it preserves the texture of the wood. It has high breathability, so it allows the wood to “breathe”.

Opaque paint for bath doors is used less often, since the natural grain of the wood fits more harmoniously into the interior. Traditionally, the interior decoration of a bathhouse is made of wood, which is why doors with a pronounced texture look better.

But if tiles are used to decorate the walls, you can make the doors plain by choosing the appropriate color.

When using paint, pre-treatment of the surface with antiseptic impregnation and fire retardant is required if the door is in a steam room. It is advisable to choose all products from one manufacturer, this will improve their interaction and make the coating better.

The optimal choice for bath doors are alkyd-based varnishes and paints, the main advantage of which is considered to be resistance to temperature fluctuations and water resistance.

And one more thing: paint and varnish products should be purchased only in specialized stores where storage conditions are observed, especially temperature conditions.

How to paint new doors

Untreated wood absorbs moisture well, and if new doors are installed in a bathhouse without impregnation with protective compounds, they will very soon swell and stop closing tightly. Therefore, before installing the doors, they need to be properly prepared and painted. All work should be done indoors to prevent dust from getting on the paint.

Step 1. The door leaf without handles, hooks and loops is laid on a flat, stable surface. During the manufacturing process, the material was already amenable to grinding, but small roughness or protrusions could remain. Therefore, using a grinder or sandpaper, the doors are processed again on both sides and at the ends. Remove any uneven surfaces and wipe off any dust.

Step 2. If paint is chosen for the doors, the canvas is first impregnated with a primer. The recesses are treated first, then the flat areas. Since the doors are in a horizontal position, drips do not form and absorption occurs more evenly.

Step 3. Allow the surface to dry completely and treat it a second time.

Step 4. Now you can paint. For a panel door, a roller is more suitable; for a paneled door, use a narrow brush. The paint should not be too thick; if so, thin it with solvent. You should not apply the paint in a thick layer, as this will only reduce the quality of the coating. Depending on the coverage, you may need from 2 to 4 layers of paint, each of which must dry completely before applying the next.

Step 5. While the door dries, paint the opening. You cannot leave it untreated for the same reason as doors; besides, a painted door in an unpainted opening does not look very harmonious.

After the paint has dried, the hinges, handle, and hook are screwed onto the door and installed in the opening.

If stain is chosen for the door, no primer is used. The stain penetrates deeply into the wood, coloring the fibers and increasing the protective properties of the material. There are several ways to apply stain, which give different results.

WayDescription
Trituration.This method requires a stain with a long drying time. Using a roller, apply the composition to the door leaf and rub it thoroughly with a foam swab or a piece of thick fabric. You need to rub with force, centimeter by centimeter, so that the liquid penetrates well into the pores of the wood. The painted surface has a very pronounced pattern.
Spraying.The stain is chosen in light colors and 2-4 layers are applied using a spray gun. This method of painting gives a less pronounced texture, but perfectly hides minor wood defects.
Regular application.Suitable for flat surfaces. The stain is applied using a roller, resulting in the surface being painted evenly and without streaks.
Staining with a brush.The product is generously applied using a wide brush, first along the fibers, then across. Thanks to this method, the wood acquires a deeper and richer shade.

Advice. To avoid discrepancies in color, stain should be purchased in reserve and mixed well in the jar before use. Coloring pigments tend to settle to the bottom, as a result of which when painting doors, one part may differ in tone from the rest.

Using oil or wax impregnation

Treating doors with oil impregnation also has its secrets. If applied incorrectly, streaks and darker areas may appear on the surface. Before use, the impregnation must be stirred very well, and this must be done several times during the work process. Apply impregnation in any convenient way - roller, brush, spray or foam sponge. The number of layers depends on the porosity of the material.

So, take a little product and distribute it evenly over the surface from edge to edge. It is more convenient to do this according to the width of the door leaf. Next, the impregnation is thoroughly rubbed with a brush or rolled out with a roller, avoiding sagging. The surface dries in 8 to 12 hours, depending on the composition and air temperature. The second layer is applied no later than 24 hours later, otherwise it will not be able to absorb well and its protective properties will decrease.

Painting old doors

Old doors in a bathhouse can also be revived and made no less attractive than new ones. Although this process is more labor-intensive, anyone can handle it. For convenience, the door must be removed from its hinges and laid horizontally, but if for some reason it cannot be removed, you will have to work this way.

Step 1. The door leaf is removed from the hinges and laid on a flat surface. Unscrew handles, hinges, remove locks. If you can’t unscrew them, wrap them with tape or foil.

Step 2. Using an abrasive attachment, remove all layers of old paint to the base.

If there are putty areas, the putty is also completely cleaned off. There is another convenient way to remove paint: heat the top layer of the coating with a hair dryer until the paint begins to swell, and then scrape it off with a metal spatula.

Step 3. Sweep away pieces of paint and dust from the canvas, and then carefully sand the surface. In hard-to-reach places it is convenient to use sandpaper. After sanding there should be no rough areas, small irregularities or scratches.

Step 4. Carefully inspect the door from all sides, check the tightness of the connections, and, if necessary, strengthen the frame with metal corners and screws.

Step 5. The resulting recesses and cracks must be repaired with new putty. Putty can be used under alkyd paint in any color, but it will not show through anyway. If you plan to treat the surface with oil impregnation, wax or varnish, the shade of the putty should match the color of the door leaf.

Advice. If the wood has become very dark over time, you can bleach it a little: mix bleach with water in a ratio of 1:3 and moisten the surface generously. When it becomes lighter, the door is washed well with clean water and dried in air.

Step 8. Use a damp cloth to wipe off dust from all sides. Next, cover the door with an even layer of primer. Instead of a regular primer, you can use an antiseptic impregnation. Joints and recesses need to be treated especially carefully.

Step 9 For painting you will need a thin brush and roller.

When the primer has dried, take a brush and first paint all the lintels, recesses, decorative overlays, and panels. Next, using a roller, smooth, wide areas are painted.

The paint is applied in a thin and even layer, carefully rubbed in one direction. The second layer can be applied no earlier than the first has dried. In this case, the top layer is always applied perpendicular to the bottom one, that is, if the first layer was applied along the width of the doors, then the second one must be done longitudinally. It is especially important to follow this rule when using a brush that leaves strokes.

Step 10. Leave the canvas to dry and begin painting the door frame in the opening. It’s exactly the same here: use a thin brush at the joints, and a roller on smooth areas.

If the door cannot be removed from its hinges, for convenience it is fixed with wooden wedges on both sides so that there is maximum access to all parts of the door. The wedges should be secured as firmly as possible, otherwise the blade may move during operation. All further actions are performed in the same way. When painting, be careful not to allow drips to form. Handles and hinges, and other fittings should also be cleaned of dirt, sanded, and lubricated for ease of movement.

When treating doors with stain, it should be taken into account that splashes that fall on clean wood leave dark spots that are visible through 2-3 layers of dye. Therefore, if you are painting a door that has not been removed from its hinges, it is recommended to apply the stain very carefully and from the bottom up. The roller or brush should not be dipped into the liquid too much to avoid drips. A canvas with streaks and dark spots looks sloppy even under a layer of varnish.

When using a water-based stain, wood fibers tend to straighten, causing the surface to become rough. Sanding with fine-grain sandpaper will help eliminate such a defect. After secondary treatment with stain, the canvas remains smooth.
