When choosing floor carpets for the living room, it is important to remember what kind of environment you want to create. It doesn’t matter if your room is spacious or small, there is always the opportunity to find a suitable option and give the room its originally intended look.

Peculiarities

Carpets in the living room remain a necessary piece of furniture, although, frankly, they have gone out of fashion for a long time. Much more often you can find carpet floor coverings that are similar in terms of thermal and sound insulation functions, for example, carpet, marmoleum and others.

The carpet for the hall is somewhat different in its characteristics from the models for other rooms. Since the living room is the central room of the house where guests are received, family gather in the evenings, and feasts are usually arranged on holidays, the carpet should be stronger and more functional than models for the bedroom or kitchen. The carpet should not be allowed to quickly wipe out due to the fact that it is often walked on or moved furniture.

The length of the pile plays a decisive role when choosing. The model for the living room should not be too long, unless it is necessary from a stylistic point of view. However, be prepared: a long pile coating requires more careful care and careful handling, which is why options with a medium or short pile are welcome for living rooms.

The durability of a carpet can be easily determined by the way the back is made. Tight weaving models are of better quality. If, when the carpet is folded with the right side inward, the wrong side does not shine through, this indicates a high quality of weaving.

You can put furniture on short-haired models without fear that it will push through the coating, deform it. As a rule, rather expensive models are selected for living rooms, and not every owner is ready to buy, so to speak, a carpet for one time. So, models with a short pile can be used for a long time, including under furniture, without fear that the coating will lose its shape and attractive appearance.

Kinds

As decorative elements, two types of carpets are used: directly classic carpets and carpets. Their sizes and shapes may vary.

Carpet tracks apply is no longer relevant, however, this practice exists. They are produced in only one form and relatively small in size, so this option is far from suitable for every hall.

Palases differ from carpets in their thickness. The carpet is much thinner than the carpet in the classical sense, due to which it cannot be used in the living room. A thin canvas will quickly wear out and deteriorate, and you will have to buy a new one; this approach is highly impractical. In addition, unlike a carpet, it does not carry a high functional load, since it cannot be called soft, soundproofing or retaining heat.

Carpets with long pile are used quite rarely. They mainly serve as a background for polished furniture. A glossy finish needs a good "counterweight" and a long pile is just right for that.

H It is necessary to pay attention not only to the length of the pile, but also to the carpet structure.

For halls choose from the following types:

  • Saxony. This variety of sheared pile consists of twisted yarn;
  • Loop, consisting of fibers of the same length;
  • Loop, consisting of a pile of different lengths;
  • Velor smooth;
  • The frieze consists of a twisted long pile;
  • Cut-loop is assembled from a mixture of uncut and cut loops.

It should be noted that velor carpets cannot be placed under furniture. This is the only one of the listed structures, on which traces remain even from steps.

Each of these coatings requires minimal maintenance and is great for places with high traffic. Choosing the right option for your living room will not be difficult, each structure differs from the other in appearance.

Dimensions

Today it is possible to make carpets in various sizes, ranging from huge models that cover the entire floor to small local rugs.

The choice of one or another size depends on the initial dimensions of the room. For example, a small rug in front of the TV will look out of place in a spacious room, while a small living room will perfectly survive such a neighborhood. Making a choice in favor of one or another size, it is necessary to focus on the relevance of the model in the interior.

For cool rooms or areas in which children play, it is advised to purchase large carpets. Such options perform a heat-insulating and sound-insulating function around the entire perimeter of the living room. Models will help to hide the sounds of children running and playing from the neighbors below, thereby protecting them from inconvenience.

A small sample will save the situation if the owners want to add comfort to the room, but are not ready to spend a lot of time cleaning the carpet. By placing the rugs in impassable places, it will be possible to do both.

When choosing a carpet of a certain shape, it is worth focusing on whether the model serves as a color accent or acts as a background and addition to everything else. Accent models do much less, since the stylistic nuance should not be large. Background carpets-additions are produced large, including interesting models with ornaments. The larger the carpet, the less its stylistic role in the interior should be.

Depends on size and shape. The more fantasy sample is chosen, the less floor area it should occupy.

When choosing carpets as a substrate for furniture, remember the golden rule: the carpet should in no case be smaller than the furniture in length or width. Otherwise, there is absolutely no point in buying it. It is fashionable when the carpet for furniture is matched to the same size as the piece of furniture and slightly shifted, creating an interesting geometric illusion.

Forms

There are no special restrictions on the choice of one or another configuration: the carpet can be either rectangular or oval, broken, round, in the shape of a flower or a star.

Traditional Geometric Shapes suitable for any room: large and small, classic and modern. They often act as a background for the rest of the interior decoration, such as interesting furniture. Such models are designed to correctly shade and show all the advantages of other accent items.

The broken edges of the design a priori act as an interesting element. When selecting such details, it should be borne in mind that they visually "eat up" the space, drawing attention to themselves, so for small living rooms their use is recommended in very limited quantities.

Smoothed shapes, on the contrary, due to the effect of soft flow, they are able to make the room larger, expand its area. According to this model, the eye glides freely, without bumping into corners. Round carpets with a wavy edge are generally perceived as more harmonious.

By far the most common use rectangular rugs with rounded corners preventing them from twisting during operation. Such a configuration is suitable for almost any style of interior, moreover, such carpets are very comfortable, they do not wear out for a long time due to the special shape of the corners, they are used as underlays for furniture or as separate decorative elements. These models look spectacular with ornaments, as plain carpets lose because of their too primitive shape. The selection of a pattern must necessarily be coordinated with the form: there is nothing wrong with adding variety with a design to an overly simple carpet, but if you overload a model with a complex edge with patterns, it will turn out tasteless.

materials

Carpets are produced from natural or artificial materials. Both groups offer a large selection of different textures and colors.

Natural carpets are produced from wool, silk, cotton, and weave mats from natural materials. The most numerous group is woolen carpets.

Models made of wool are mainly made from sheepskin. Appearance depends on many factors, ranging from the living conditions of the sheep and ending with the processing of wool. There are both woven wool carpets and those made from skins.

Silk options are rarely used as floor coverings. They do not have thermal insulation properties, they are poorly cleaned. But each silk carpet is a work of art.

Cotton models are most often used for the bathroom and toilet, but recently carpets for nurseries and living rooms where children play are increasingly being made from them. Cotton absorbs allergens, largely because of this, it is gaining unprecedented popularity.

Mats are woven from natural plant fibers. Their use is extremely limited due to the fact that the coating is lint-free and does not carry any special artistic value.

Artificial options for the living room are often much cheaper and endowed with those qualities that you should not expect from natural samples: the ability to not lose their appearance under the influence of sunlight, the possibility of washing and similar characteristics. Artificial carpets are made from acrylic, polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, viscose and bamboo.

Both natural and artificial materials have their supporters and opponents. Remember that when choosing a quality option, you should not be guided by the rule "Heavy carpet is a good carpet." Often, the severity of the sample is determined only by the characteristics of the material, and not at all by the quality of the weaving of the base.

Colors

Often the choice of one or another color of the carpet depends on the shade of the floors. For example, a light-colored sample is often placed on a dark floor to create a cozy environment. A light beige model can be chosen for almost any environment, it will act as a universal background.

The carpet should be chosen either in the same colors as the living room, or in contrasting ones. In the first case, the carpet will be used to correct the room, in the second - to create an accent.

photos

With bright saturated colors, the situation is a little more complicated. When choosing an accent carpet, you should be guided by the color wheel and select the shade of a bright element within two sectors from the main color. For example, a red carpet will suit both a red-purple room and a yellow-orange one.

Burgundy models are familiar to most since Soviet times, when they were especially popular. However, now these bright models should not be used. If you still want to use a burgundy color, give preference to plain models of a classic form.

  • vertical stripes allow you to visually expand the room. The more contrasting stripes are selected, the greater the effect.
  • carpet gradient will help to visually balance the proportions of a long narrow room, if you place it with the bright side from the viewer. You can achieve the opposite effect if you place the dark part away.
  • On a light sample dark furniture looks more airy. On a dark model, even light-colored furniture will take on a more squat look.
  • As an interesting accent you can select only one small piece of furniture, you can choose a small carpet of the same color. Such an accent duet will look more harmonious than a single bright detail.

Various styles

The choice of a suitable carpet model is largely determined by the style of the hall. It is worth mentioning that modern trends open up more scope for experimentation than the classics. If for living rooms in a classical style one has to rely on clearly defined canons, then in modern rooms a mixture of styles is allowed.

Carpet for baroque style should have a complex pattern. Typically, such models are made in a classic rectangular shape, and are framed at the edges with a fringe. The palette is allowed different - from light to dark saturated combinations.

For vintage style you can pick up a velor slightly "shabby" carpet with the effect of antiquity. It looks interesting when the drawing seems to have worn down over time and survived only in places. Mostly choose monophonic models without complex wicker patterns.

For a modern loft direction a slightly worn carpet with an ornament works well. It should look like you inherited it from your grandmother. It is not necessary to select trendy patterns, it is enough to give preference to ornateness.

In the style of minimalism the use of variants of the simplest geometric shape is encouraged. Models with a pattern will definitely not fit into the style, but plain ones are completely. The color can lie both in the black and white spectrum and be accented, but it is important to choose pure tones: yellow, red, purple.

In Scandinavian living rooms you can lay a thin, lint-free mat of a light shade, or you can choose a skin with a soft pile and place it not under furniture, but only for walking on it, for example, between a sofa and a TV.

Skins can be used in ethnic interiors, however, in this case, it is worth choosing exotic samples: zebra: leopard, lion.

How to choose?

Finding stylish designs for a particular living room is not so difficult. You need to focus directly on the situation: wallpaper, furniture, flooring, the presence of other decorative details in the room.

First, decide on the style of the room in order to understand what kind of sample you need. Based on this knowledge, you will significantly reduce the list of suitable options, and it will become easier to make the right choice.

You have to be honest about the size of the room. The options for a small hall are significantly limited, while for a truly spacious room there are a lot of different models. Start from the dimensions of the furniture. For example, for a set of a sofa and two armchairs, a large carpet is suitable, on which the whole composition will be spaciously placed, and a small one, located in the center of these arranged objects.

Next, think about accents. If they are already placed, and you only need to add warmth and comfort to the atmosphere, choose neutral solid colors. If the carpet should be the accent, there are 4 ways: play on color, play on texture, focus on form, or combine two or three approaches. It is worth noting that the fourth option is used only in large halls of a bold modern style and sometimes only a professional designer can do it. If you decide to choose a carpet yourself, do not hesitate to take a photo of the room and ask for help in choosing: professionals work in stores, they will help you choose the right option.

How to properly position?

The location of the carpet may vary depending on the effect to be created, as well as the shape of the furniture and the room itself.

In an apartment, living rooms are usually not very large, so the best solution is to lay a carpet in the center. If it is also almost the same size as the room, there are no other options at all. This option is versatile and boring at the same time, not everyone will like it.

For small rooms with a corner sofa, a good solution would be to lay the carpet within the corner directly under the furniture, so that you can put your feet on it when you are comfortable on the sofa, but it does not “leave” from time to time. In this case, the furniture will act as a retainer for the rug, holding it in place, and the carpet itself will add the necessary comfort during gatherings in the living room.

For a hall with polished furniture, it is best to choose a long-haired sample that is laid under the furniture. It is difficult to care for him, but the effect is worth it.

In the combined dining room, you should find a rug that repeats the shape of the table and place it directly under the table. This will help focus attention on the dining area and at the same time allow diners to feel more comfortable during the meal.

To visually separate the living room from several zones, for each area you can choose your own carpet of different textures and colors and place it depending on the location of the main furniture of a certain zone, for example, on the floor in front of a TV or a sofa for a relaxation area, under an armchair for a reading area, in front of sofa for sleeping area and so on.

Options in the interior

  • The classic placement of the carpet under the corner sofa. There are no bright accents in this room at all, with the exception of a small illuminated painting, so buying a bright patterned carpet would be inappropriate. A light model with an unobtrusive pattern fits perfectly into the design of the room.
  • An ornamented carpet looks interesting if placed in front of a sofa. The mirror gradient pattern visually conceals the area of the room due to the arrangement of black elements on the sides.
  • The large pattern of the carpet acts as an accent detail. Such beautiful elements need the right frame, so they should only be used in modest monochrome interiors.

  • Furnishings are rarely placed on a skin carpet so as not to disturb the structure of the pile. It can be pressed through and deformed, and it is not easy to bring a natural fiber carpet back to its original form. In addition, the owners of the room played on the contrast, combining in one composition both a square carpet and a round table of lightweight design.
  • A small but very bright carpet “eats up” the area of the room, drawing attention to itself. An excellent accent duet of an armchair and a rug looks stylish and harmonious, the rest of the bright details only complement it. The connecting element is a soft textile cushion.

If you want to quickly and cost-effectively spice up your home, a new carpet will help you with this. Even such a modest transformation will give a new sound to the interior. These amazing, soft and warm products have been known for over 2.5 thousand years. Persia is considered the birthplace of the carpet, where to this day carpet weaving is a real art, surrounded by certain traditions.

In Russia, such products were considered rare and cost fabulous money. They lost their exclusivity only in the 19th century, when European weavers mastered the carpet art. The most famous carpet manufacturers, besides Iran, are France, Belgium, Germany.

How to choose a carpet for the interior

Recently, fashion has encouraged us to abandon carpets: carpets on the walls are considered a relic of the past, and floors are increasingly simply covered with parquet or linoleum. But, despite this, this piece of furniture will never lose popularity. Carpet is able to give your apartment an attractive and elegant look, it can become both a dominant element that sets the tone for the rest of the home, and a bright color accent. Unlike laminate or tile, carpets have good sound absorption, warm the cold floor and give the room a cozy feel. The carpet is able to create a special atmosphere only if it is properly selected, fits into the overall style and color scheme of the interior, otherwise it will simply seem like a foreign object. Here are some tips for choosing carpet colors:

  • Small bright spots in the colors of the carpet can be supplemented with sofa upholstery, countertops or curtains;
  • Never pick up a carpet to match the walls, otherwise the room will look dull and featureless;
  • The carpet should contrast with the shade of the floor: bright and warm shades - soft green, orange or yellow - go well with light wood or tiles. If the flooring in the room is gray, the carpet might be purple or burgundy. Rich ocher carpets and different shades of green harmonize with mahogany or terracotta floors. White, pinkish, gray and beige shades of the carpet are suitable for a dark floor like oak or wenge;
  • If the pattern of the carpet contains geometric or floral ornaments, it is advisable to choose furniture in the upholstery of which there will be a similar pattern or similar curtains;
  • If the wallpaper or furniture drapery is very colorful, rich, with intricate ornaments, the carpet should be plain or with a calm, discreet pattern. If the walls are painted or the wallpaper pattern is simple, the interior will be complemented by a carpet with an intricate ornament.

What should be considered when choosing a carpet product?

If you have decided on the style and color scheme, it's time to think about the size of the carpet. Too large a product will completely hide the beauty of a wooden floor, and a very small one will look superfluous. If you choose a rug for a coffee table, it should fit all the legs of the table, but a rug for a dining table should cover a much larger area - it should also fit the chairs. If you plan to carpet the entire room, try not to leave open areas around the edges.

You can lay several carpets at once, different in texture and ornament, the main thing is that they are combined in style and color. In addition, with the help of carpets, you can perform such a technique as zoning, and this will make your apartment even more comfortable.

Now let's talk about the materials from which a carpet can be made.

Initially, cotton or wool served as the material for carpets, now the choice of fabrics is much wider. Often manufacturers use a combination of natural and synthetic fibers. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Synthetics, if, of course, of high quality, resistant to fading, dirt and wear. However, it is not suitable for people who suffer from allergic diseases. Acrylic is resistant to moisture and sunlight, so these carpets are most often used in the hallway or bathroom. Penopropylene is resistant to dirt, water resistance, affordable price, while it is not very pleasant to the touch, so it is suitable for rooms with high traffic or offices. Nylon coating - one of the most popular, it is practical in care and cleaning, soft, resistant to abrasion. Approximately 70% of the carpets on the market are made from this material.

Natural materials are less practical than synthetic ones. Velor carpets look very rich, have a beautiful texture, but at the same time, traces of vacuuming remain on their surface. Cotton carpets can be of almost any color, they are not very resistant to abrasion and may fade over time. The most capricious carpet is jute, it is not resistant to moisture and sunlight. Very strong and resistant carpet is obtained from sisal, it does not fade, is resistant to abrasion and antistatic. Wool is an ideal material for carpet, it is easy to care for such a product, it is very soft and warm to the touch. Carpets made from cut fibers are not very practical, although they will make any room elegant and beautiful. The pile on these carpets returns to its original position rather slowly after cleaning, so in some places such a product may look wrinkled. And, finally, carpets made of fur and skins are more of a design move than an urgent need. Such carpets are suitable only for interiors in a certain style (ethnic), giving it exoticism and sophistication.

To check if the carpet is reliable, do a simple test: run your fingers against the pile. If the villi remain in your hand, in the future this product will quickly lose its density and spread. In addition, the carpet should be pleasant to the touch: a low-quality product will have tangled, hard and dry strands, while a high-quality carpet will be soft and silky.

Carpets in the bedroom

The bedroom is a room with low traffic, so when choosing a carpet, you need to be guided not only by practicality, but also by aesthetics. The main criterion is the material from which the product is made. It is preferable to choose carpets from natural materials - wool, sisal. They are environmentally friendly, differ in thermal conductivity and practicality.

You can place them in different ways: if the room is large, the best option would be to place the carpet under the bed or near its foot. Additionally, you can line a section of the room near the dressing table, while the carpet should be of the same design.

A very interesting solution is to choose a carpet to match the color of the bedspread on the bed or the curtains on the windows. The product can be with a small or long pile, the only caveat is that heavy interior items should not be placed on fluffy products, otherwise traces will remain on the carpet.

For a small bedroom, you can choose paired rugs or a small oval-shaped cover that partially goes under the bed. As for color, the rug should either be in harmony with the rest of the decor or be in contrast.

Carpets for the living room

Floor covering in the living room should emphasize the advantages of the room and hide the disadvantages. It would be nice to lay a small carpet in the recreation area, which will be designed in warm colors: beige, cream, light green, dove gray or pale pink are the most suitable shades. If you want to emphasize the geometry of the room, choose products of strict shapes - rectangular or square.

The carpet in the living room can also become a color accent in the interior - a yellow, purple, red or green carpet to match the small decor elements (vases, pillows, curtains, paintings) will look very beneficial. You can also focus on the color of the upholstery or wall decoration - then the carpet will become a link in the interior of the room.

Carpets in the nursery

In the children's room, it is desirable to lay carpets that are resistant to abrasion and wear. You must be prepared that children are real fidgets, so the carpet must withstand frequent cleaning.

The choice of pattern and color is limited only by your imagination, it is desirable that they be warm and bright colors that are pleasing to the eye of the child. Make sure that the product you purchased is hypoallergenic, because the health of the child is first and foremost.

Carpets for the kitchen

Carpet in the kitchen is not a very practical choice, although if you choose the right cover, it will not cause any extra trouble. First of all, focus on practicality - these can be rubber-based products that do not slip on tiles and are easy to clean. Bamboo and sisal products with a latex backing look interesting, and propylene coatings will serve you for many years.

Carpets in the corridor and hallway

The corridor and the hallway are rooms with high traffic. Give preference to synthetic products with dense weaving and low pile - they are resistant to dirt and high humidity.

In the hallway, small rugs of cheerful colors look good, which will refresh the interior and at the same time delight you with their performance characteristics.

Choose a carpet carefully - and a quality product will serve you and your family for a very long time, delighting with its beauty and practicality.

A cozy atmosphere cannot be such without additional decorative elements. And this is true, it is enough to compare two absolutely identical interiors of the living room, only one will contain only upholstered furniture, a TV, wallpaper, laminate and curtains, and in the other, in addition to the above elements, floor vases, paintings on the walls, photo frames, a magazine will be added. table, floor carpet and a couple of figurines. So, it is the second interior filled with all kinds of decorative items that will be considered more comfortable, habitable and visually soft.

At one time, the carpet was considered a sign of the financial well-being of the family, not only the floor was covered with carpets, but also hung on the wall, now the carpet on the wall is nonsense, but at the same time it has not lost its relevance at all, only now it can be seen exclusively on the floor, mainly in center of the room. Although, designers like to play with contrasts, highlighting a certain area in the room with one carpet, so there are as many areas in the room as there can be carpets. But the option with the use of several carpets is quite difficult in the implementation of the interior idea, since it is important to choose carpets that are simultaneously consistent with each other, as well as successfully harmonizing with the general style of a particular area of the room, so people often entrust the selection of several floor mats to professionals in their field - designers. Well, literally everyone can handle the choice of one carpet, and this article will help you with this.

What are floor mats made from?

Such floor decoration can be made from natural as well as artificial materials.

Natural materials include:

  • Sheep's wool;
  • silk threads;
  • Animal skins;
  • Other natural fur.

Similar products made of wool have proven themselves well in the summer operating period, since this material has a low thermal conductivity, even on the hottest day, the wool on the tiled floor will pleasantly cool, and on cold days, on the contrary, it will warm. But this material has several significant drawbacks: the formation of static electricity, rapid surface contamination and a high degree of allergenicity.

Silk products often perform only a decorative role, as they are very thin and are not able to warm the legs of their owners, but they are insanely beautiful and have such bright colors that future owners are ready to put up with their performance characteristics.

Artificial materials include:

  • Viscose;
  • Nylon threads;
  • polyester fibers;
  • Acrylic fibers.

It is these products that are considered the most optimal for families with children, since they are pleasant to the touch, diverse in shape, do not have allergenic properties, are produced in a wide variety of colors, are endowed with excellent wear-resistant qualities, do not fade in the sun, are perfectly cleaned with aqueous soap solutions and are designed for different segments of the population.

How to choose the color of the future carpet.

  1. In a living room with bright furniture, carpets in neutral tones should be selected.
  2. Upholstered furniture catches the eye with bright, multi-colored upholstery, then the carpet should be monophonic and visually discreet, while its tone should match one of the colors of the bright furniture upholstery.
  3. On the surface of a dark floor, a light rug or a bright and catchy one will look advantageous.
  4. A kind of “set” of curtains and a carpet of the same color will look harmonious.
  5. A living room decorated in a warm palette should include an equally warm rug tone.
  6. The dark interior can be shaded with light flooring.
  7. The carpet can be combined in tone with other decorative elements: curtains, sofa cushions, floor vases, figurines, sofa rugs.
  8. The living room in beige tones can be shaded with a chocolate or coffee color of the carpet.
  9. The product is ideally perceived to be a tone darker / lighter than the flooring in the room.
  10. It is better not to choose a rug to match the walls, otherwise the whole interior will look boring.
  11. Match the geometric pattern on the floor carpet in the same direction as the pattern on the furniture.
  12. Horizontal stripes will make the room a little wider than the declared parameters.

The shape and size of the carpet.

According to the dimensional ratio, the product in question is divided into three types:

small- within three square meters. Small rugs are often placed by the sofa, under the coffee table.

Medium- within three to six square meters. Medium-sized carpet products are traditionally placed in the center of the room.

Large- starting from six square meters. It is customary to cover the floor with a large carpet product from the center, so that it is evenly distributed from the walls of the room.

As for the shape of textile floor coverings, they can be oval, rectangular, square, round, diamond-shaped and even polygonal. At the same time, it is important to know that the width of a standard carpet cannot exceed 3.6 meters, with the exception of stitched models.

  • The carpet path will make the room visually elongated.
  • A carpet covering the entire area of the room without an ornament will visually make the room larger.
  • Round rugs often make up accents in a room.
  • Rectangular rugs often allocate a recreation area, near the sofa.
  • Often the carpet is matched to the shape of the coffee table (round, square, rectangular).
  • A round carpet is able to make the room a little smaller than the original parameters, simply visually cutting off the corner sections of the room. This can be avoided by choosing a carpet to match the floor.
  • The coffee table should stand with all its legs on the sofa rug.
  • A round carpet will be harmoniously perceived with a round chandelier hanging above it.
  • Long pile textile coating will give the room the missing share of comfort and warmth.

Carpet to the style of the interior of the living room.

  1. The Modern interior will look perfect with a classic square or rectangular rug, solid color, mostly pastel colors.
  2. Interior Vintage can be beaten with a light textile floor covering in a small flower.
  3. The Hi-Tech interior will take on a cold-colored monochromatic coating.
  4. The country interior will look harmonious with a decorative textile floor covering with a bright color print, but plain brown products are also possible.
  5. The classic interior will look perfect with spectacular ornate patterns, made in beige, gold, amber shades.
  6. African interior loves animal prints, so products with zebra, giraffe, leopard print will look appropriate. In addition, bright floor textile elements with geometric patterns are suitable.
  7. The Japanese interior will take a square rug with a plain surface, without any decorative elements.
  8. The Scandinavian interior will look harmonious with a white or black textile floor covering.

Choosing a carpet (video):

In this review, we told you how to choose a carpet for the living room, showed a lot of suitable photos, so we think that now choosing a future carpet will not give you a lot of unnecessary trouble.

The site "" provided its readers with the opportunity to subscribe to receive notifications about the release of the latest reviews, you can subscribe through the form in the sidebar.

Create an interesting visual effect, become a bright accent in the interior or harmoniously complement it - with the right color scheme of the carpet, you will certainly achieve the desired result. Living room in neutral colors seems boring and too calm? Then you need a bright carpet. Complement it with decorative pillows in the same color scheme and you will have a fresh and juicy living room at home.

If moderation and calmness in everything is your creed, a carpet with a classic and unpretentious pattern is best suited. The main thing is to choose the right color for the product: it should be combined with the color scheme in the room, but at the same time not get lost. A difference of several tones is not only acceptable, but necessary. Otherwise, your new carpet will be lost and will not perform to its full potential.

We have already learned, like a multiplication table, that light shades visually expand the space of a room. This golden rule also applies to carpets, so for owners of small apartments, light-colored models are the best solution. Plain carpets of rich and warm colors will visually narrow the room, while cold and calm ones will expand it. A large pattern on a carpet has no place in a small apartment: its perception requires space and distance. But the size of the carpet for a room of modest footage should be as large as possible: do not split up the space with a small model.

Good day, dear visitors of the interior design school! In today's lesson, we will analyze with you the basic rules when choosing floor carpets for various rooms in an apartment or house.

The first thing to start with is to find out the standard sizes of carpets. Carpets

usually supplied in standard sizes; 1.2 x 1.8; 2.4 x 1.8; 2.7 x 2.4; 3.0 x 2.7; 3.6 x 4.2 m, I may have missed some of them, but all of the above are the most common in most stores.

Before you go shopping for carpet, grab a tape measure or measuring tape and find out what the best carpet size for your room space will be. Now that you know the standard sizes for carpets, this should be easier.

To determine in advance the size of the future carpet, for example, you can use any colored tape and lay out the outline of the future carpet with it. This technique will allow you to see its dimensions and proportions, as well as assess whether they (the proportions and dimensions of the carpet) will suit your room.

If the furniture in the room is arranged around the perimeter (square) or your living room is square in shape, find the carpet that you like best and cut it to the required size. Just remember that most of the carpets are no more than 3.6 m wide (the length can be different), i.e. in any case, you will not be able to get a square carpet with a side of more than 3.6m, unless of course you are confused by the seam on the carpet.

What carpet size is best for your space? It is impossible to answer this question unambiguously, because it depends on the dimensions of the room, the arrangement of furniture, etc., but you should not choose a rug that will look like an island in the center of the room.

It is good if you have a carpet that is on the edge of the furniture or even directly under it, but this will already depend on the furniture. For example, if you have a lot of furniture with long legs and a large room, then a carpet will suit you well, as in the photo below:

When you decide on the shape and size of the carpet, you should start choosing it by color. Many beginners make the same mistake: they may even bring carpets home to try and not find the right one for years. Obviously, if you start your carpet selection without furniture (which you should ideally start with) it won't be that difficult, however, if you need to coordinate your selection with existing furniture, then don't leave the house without a fabric (or pillow) sample from the sofa. and chairs.

The fabric sample you have can be a good help in choosing. But if it’s hard for you to imagine how the carpet will be combined with furniture over a small piece of fabric, it’s better to take a pillow from the sofa or just a pillowcase from it to make it easier to “travel” shopping with it. This way you will have a large fabric swatch so you can better try it on in the store.

If the carpet is hanging on the wall in a showroom or store, ask to have it removed because the color of the carpet can change dramatically and you can see how it will look on the floor. It's much easier to see which carpet will look best in your home if, again, you have all the important coordinating fabrics with you. Lay them out on the floor next to the carpet.

If you are choosing an ornamented carpet, then be sure to look at the rules for combining various ornaments. This will allow you to more professionally match and match the different patterns on the carpet with other items and furniture in the room.

To be able to see the many shades on a carpet, and most importantly, to correctly combine them with other items in your home, of course, a long journey from knowledge to experience is required. However, it's very rare that you won't be able (in one trip) to choose the right mat, thanks to the fact that you will have all the necessary fabric samples with you.

Some carpet shops offer a service and are even willing to give them a "try on" in the hope of selling it. Check if this service is available in your area.

Never buy a rug without trying it on first at home. Or at least if you're not 99% sure it will fit, don't buy it. "Can I take it for approval?" ask this question and it's the only way (which many shops understand) to check it. However, most stores, especially state-owned stores, will not be willing to provide you with a carpet until you have purchased it.

If you cannot take the carpet with you “for trying on”, you can ask for the closest to its color, or the same, small sample of the rug, and then at home choose the prototype of the future carpet that you need in size and color according to this template.

The price when choosing a carpet is not the surest indicator of whether it will look good or not. It is often possible to choose an inexpensive rug that will fit and harmonize better with the rest of the room than a chic, expensive rug that doesn't match in color or texture.

Choosing a carpet by texture is also a difficult task for novice designers. To choose the right carpet, you will need knowledge of composition, namely the concept of compositional contrast. After all, thanks to it, you can decide how your carpet should be: with a long or short pile, traditional rectangular or any other shape, with a rough or calm texture and texture, etc.

Also, another important aspect in choosing the right carpet is the style of the interior in which the room is designed. Judge for yourself, you would not use an ordinary mat in an interior designed in one of the luxurious classic styles, such as baroque, or a bearskin instead of a rug in a hi-tech interior.

Carpets in various rooms of an apartment or house:

Dining room

If you plan to use a carpet on your dining room floor, make sure it is at least 60 cm larger than the dining table on all sides.

Even if you can’t see the living room from the dining room, to create a harmonious flowing space, the carpets must harmonize with each other to a certain extent. If they are next to each other, they should be similar, but don't just buy two identical Persian carpets (in most cases this happens), because it will be too simple and boring. In the dining room, the carpet can be larger in size, and in the living room a little less, or vice versa. The same applies to the pattern on the carpets and their colors.

Bedroom

Sometimes you can get by with a smaller bedroom rug, even if you want to step out of bed onto a cozy, cool surface. Just place it lengthwise under the bed (as in the picture below).

Kitchen

Don't forget to put one rug in the kitchen, or at least right under the kitchen sink, where you spend the most time!
