Hanging a chandelier on the ceiling is considered perhaps the simplest task, until it turns out that there is a hook sticking out of the ceiling, and the newly purchased beauty must be attached to a bar. It must be said right away that it is unlikely that it will be possible to solve the problem “in an amicable way.” The only exception to this rule is the case when the lamp is not heavy, and the hook is firmly concreted into the ceiling. In this case, the plank is put on a hook, and the hook is bent towards the ceiling, making room for a decorative bowl, and pressing the plank to the ceiling. The reliability of such fastening must be assessed locally, but it has a right to exist. In other cases, get ready for more serious work.

Attaching a chandelier to concrete floors

When attached to concrete floors, the hook to which it was planned to attach the chandelier may prevent the decorative trim from fitting tightly to the ceiling. The simplest thing is to bend it to the ceiling. But here you need to pay attention to the method of attaching the suspension. If it is walled with alabaster, then when you try to bend the hook, you risk getting a large hole in its place, which will prevent the installation of the plank on the ceiling. You can try to bite the hook with wire cutters and carefully break it off, or cut it off with a hacksaw.

If the alabaster has already crumbled, you will have to lay it again. Before laying, you should make sure that the length of the remaining wires is sufficient to connect the lamp. If the wires are too short, you need to extend them in advance and reliably insulate them. In this case, the junction should not get inside the mass of alabaster.

Attaching to a plasterboard ceiling

When sheathing with plasterboard, the place and method of installing the lamps is determined in advance, but even here the situation can be corrected.

  • If the lamps are light, they can be attached directly to the plasterboard sheet using self-tapping screws and butterfly dowels.
  • Heavier lamps are attached to the base of the ceiling. Instead of self-tapping screws, anchor bolts are used if the distance from the ceiling to the sheathing allows. It is important here not to overtighten the bolts that hold the fastening strip, since there are no embeds under the drywall. First you need to tighten the anchor with a tubular wrench to wedge the anchor, and then unscrew them and attach the strip, which can simply lie on the heads of the bolts.
  • If the distance between the sheathing and the base of the ceiling is large, the bolts in the anchor fastenings are replaced with studs, which are screwed into the anchor using two nuts. The length is cut locally, since it is impossible to determine exactly how much stud the anchor will “tighten.” With this type of fastening, you can do without a fastening strip altogether by choosing the distance between the studs equal to the distance between the holes in the decorative bowl.

Hello, dear readers and site visitors.

After purchasing a chandelier, the question always arises of how to install it. In this article I will tell you how to hang a lamp or chandelier without calling specialists.

There is nothing complicated about this and you can easily do it on your own. But some subtleties and nuances need to be mentioned.

There are several ways to mount and install a chandelier in the ceiling:

  • on a metal hook
  • on a bracket or bar
  • directly to the surface

Let's look at each fastening method in more detail.

Installing a chandelier using a hook

This is the simplest and most convenient way to attach a chandelier. We hang it on a metal hook pre-installed on the ceiling. My example shows an old-style metal hook installed during the construction of the house.

1. How to hang a light chandelier

If the chandelier is not heavy and weighs up to 3-4 (kg), then you can use a metal hook like this with a thread.

Using a hammer drill, we drill a hole in the ceiling, insert a plastic dowel into it and screw in the hook. The chandelier mount is ready.

Also, using a threaded metal hook, you can install the chandelier in a ceiling with a wooden ceiling. The hook simply needs to be wrapped (screwed) into the wooden base of the ceiling.

I would like to draw your attention to the following. Installing a hook in a plasterboard ceiling is prohibited. In this case, the metal hook must be attached to the concrete base of the ceiling.

2. How to hang a heavy chandelier

If the chandelier is heavy and weighs more than 5 (kg), then it is better to use special anchor bolts with a diameter of 10 sq. mm. with spacer hook.

Drill a hole in the ceiling of the required diameter. After that, insert the anchor into it and tighten it until it stops. This chandelier mount is very reliable.

Chandeliers that are designed to be installed on a hook have a special decorative cup.

The cup moves freely in height and is fixed in the upper position to hide places.

Installation of a chandelier using a bracket (bar)

Now we will look at how to install a chandelier without a metal hook. I consider this method of fastening to be somewhat more complicated than the previous one, but not so complicated as to require the paid services of specialists.

Included with the purchased chandelier is a special metal bracket or strip. We install 2 screws into this bracket or bar, adjusting the distance between them, and then tighten them with nuts. After this, we attach the bracket to the ceiling using a hammer drill and two dowel nails.

Previously, a chandelier on a metal hook was installed in this place. The purchased new chandelier is attached using a bracket, so I bent the hook towards the ceiling, which you can see in the photo. You can even cut off the hook, but in this position it doesn’t bother me at all.

Tighten the two fastening decorative nuts.

The chandelier is installed and ready for use.

I won’t dwell on this now, because... this is the topic of a separate article. Read in upcoming issues.

P.S. So, in this article we learned how to install a chandelier using metal hooks, brackets and directly to the surface. Now let's move on to connecting it. Read about this in my next articles.

Currently, chandeliers, in addition to their main task - to illuminate the room, also serve as a decorative element. Not only safety, but also the degree of illumination of the room and its interior depends on how correctly the chandelier is installed.

Classmates

Before you start installing a chandelier, you need to think about which model to choose and figure out how it will harmonize with the interior of the room. Since the range of this product in stores is quite wide, before purchasing you need to familiarize yourself with the types of chandeliers and the materials from which it can be made.

Types of chandeliers

There are the following types of chandeliers:

  • Ceiling (plafonds). These chandeliers are perfect for almost any room. Lampshades are usually presented in the form of a ball, square or cube, made of plastic or glass. Lampshades can be presented not only in different shapes, but also in different colors.
  • Suspensions. Usually installed in the kitchen or large living room. Such chandeliers are attached to a cord, chain or string. Made from glass, fabric or plastic.
  • Classic. It will look great in a spacious room with a high ceiling. They are distinguished by their refined and luxurious appearance. Made from crystal, metal, glass, etc.

Types of fasteners for chandeliers

Many people ask the question of how to hang a chandelier if its owner does not have special knowledge of electricity. First you need to determine what type of fastener is present on the lighting fixture.

Hook for fastening

Typically, the type of fastener depends on the design of the chandelier and the materials from which it is made. The main types of fastenings include the following:

  1. Wall;
  2. Ceiling;
  3. Built-in;
  4. Mixed.

The most common and easiest to install is the ceiling mount. The most difficult part will be the installation of a chandelier with built-in and mixed mounts.

The installation of a chandelier, regardless of the fasteners on which it will be attached, must be carried out according to certain rules:

  • Before installing the device, you must turn off the power supply. This is the most important condition, since all actions aimed at installing the chandelier and working with wiring can be life-threatening.
  • All exposed wires and metal parts of fasteners must be insulated;
  • When installing a chandelier directly, it is better to remove all shades to avoid them falling. In addition, installing a chandelier without heavy elements is much easier than with them.

Mount for regular ceiling

Tools required for installation

One person can hang a small chandelier, but there are models weighing 8-10 kg, in which case it is recommended that two people install the device. During work you may need the following tools:

  • Stepladder, table or chair. You can use a nightstand or other securely fastened object that can support the weight of an adult;
  • or, depending on the material on which the device will be installed, as well as the thickness and strength of the walls or ceiling.
  • Stationery knife, hammer, screwdrivers, screwdriver, electrical tape;
  • , anchors, dowels, screws (depending on fastening).

How to hang a lighting fixture on the wall?

The wall mount is a metal fastener that can be easily mounted to almost any surface. To install the lamp on a wall mount you must:

  • Place the housing of the lighting fixture against the wall;
  • Mark the points on the wall where holes will need to be made;
  • Use a drill or hammer drill to make holes;
  • Attach the housing to the wall;
  • Connect the device to the electrical network through the terminal block. The terminal block is located inside the luminaire and is a small housing containing the contacts necessary for fastening wires and cables;
  • Assemble the lamp and check its operation.

Preparing wiring for the chandelier

How to hang a chandelier on a ceiling mount?

Before hanging a ceiling chandelier, you need to understand what type of fasteners it has. Typically, ceiling mounts come in two types:

  1. In the form of a hook. A chandelier with such a mount will be hung on a hook, securely
  2. screwed into the ceiling.
  3. In the form of a plank. In this case, the plank is firmly mounted in the ceiling, and then the chandelier is attached to it.

Both fastening options are the most common, and their installation is quite simple and does not require special skills. Very often the hook is installed in the ceiling during the construction of the house.

Installing a chandelier on a ceiling hook

If a ceiling hook is not provided, you can install it yourself as follows:

  • Drill a hole;
  • Screw a metal anchor into it;
  • Screw in the hook;
  • Insulate the hook with electrical tape. This procedure is carried out for safety reasons.
  • Check the strength and hang the chandelier.

If the ceiling is wooden, you can use a self-tapping hook that is directly screwed into the ceiling.

The ceiling hook is considered the most reliable mount, capable of supporting even the heaviest lighting fixture.

Hole for a chandelier in a suspended ceiling

Installing a chandelier on a mounting strip

Before hanging the chandelier, you need to secure the strip. To do this you need:

  • Attach the bar and mark the location of its intended attachment;
  • Make holes;
  • Place dowels;
  • Screw in the bar using screws;
  • After making sure that the wires are de-energized, connect the wires to the electrical wiring of the house;
  • Hang the chandelier so that the decorative cap fits tightly to the surface of the ceiling.

If there is a hook where the plank is installed, it must be bent to the ceiling so that it does not interfere.

Cross bar mounting

The cross strip is, in fact, a type of mounting strip. Its advantage is that, thanks to its larger coverage area and the larger number of holes through which it is attached to the ceiling, the cross bar holds massive chandeliers better. Thanks to these factors, it is a better holder than a regular bar.

Its installation is carried out according to the same rules as on a rectangular plank, with the only difference being that more holes will have to be drilled, usually four.

Attaching the hook to the hole

Installing a chandelier on a suspended or suspended ceiling

The connection diagram for a chandelier on a ceiling made of plasterboard is slightly different from installation on a regular ceiling. If you need to fix a heavy chandelier on a hook, then make a small hole in the drywall through which the hook will be mounted into the concrete surface. This is not difficult to do using a special attachment for, for example, a wood crown. The hook cannot be attached directly to suspended or suspended ceilings.

If a small device is attached using a strip, then installation can be done using plastic or metal fasteners on the sheet of drywall itself.

Features of installation on a suspended or suspended ceiling

It is better to take care of the mounting for the chandelier before installing the new ceiling, since it is very difficult to do a high-quality installation of a lighting fixture on such a ceiling, especially if the chandelier is intended to be installed independently. The fact is that when creating a hole in a stretch ceiling, the fabric or film begins to creep apart over time.

For a chandelier installed on such a ceiling, only LED lamps are suitable, since ordinary light bulbs cause stains on the ceiling.

Installed chandelier on a suspended ceiling

Is it worth doing the installation yourself?

Should I call electricians or can I hang the chandelier myself? This question is the most pressing for owners of a new lighting device. In general, following the instructions, anyone can hang a chandelier on their own. An important condition is compliance with safety precautions and turning off electricity during work. If the chandelier is large or heavy, then it is better to do the installation together.

Most apartments in multi-storey buildings cannot boast of high ceilings. The use of tension or suspended structures here should be approached very carefully, since they eat up such necessary centimeters. Very often the surface of the floor slabs is leveled and covered with whitewash or painted. When thinking about lighting issues in such rooms, you need to think about how to hang a lamp on a concrete ceiling and secure it correctly.

Nowadays there are a lot of fasteners and various brackets; to install ceiling lighting you can use:

  • Anchor hook;
  • Clamp suspension;
  • Overhead mount.

The easiest and most reliable option for hanging a chandelier is an anchor hook screwed into the ceiling. It allows you to hang large massive chandeliers from concrete floors. Installing an anchor on a hollow slab presents some challenges. It may happen that the drilled mounting hole falls into the internal cavity. In this case, the reliability of the fastening will be significantly reduced, since only half of the design length of the body will work against the thrust. The way out of this situation is simple - move a little to the side and drill a new hole, and cover the old one with putty.

The clamping hanger is designed specifically for installation on hollow core slabs. Due to the simplicity and efficiency of the design, it is most often installed in new buildings. And since its reliability is very high, most residents do not even suspect its existence. Its load-bearing capacity is slightly lower than that of the anchor, but is still quite sufficient to hang a chandelier weighing up to 5-7 kg.

Clamp suspension
Butterfly installation

Installing an auxiliary overhead strip on the ceiling allows you to mount the lamp when, for some reason, installing an anchor or suspension hook is impossible or undesirable. Another reason to use this installation method is the standard chandelier mounting system. There is no need to reinvent the wheel when all the necessary parts are supplied with the lamp and the only thing left is to assemble them.

Overlay strip

List of materials and tools required for work

In the vast majority of cases, everything that might be needed to hang a lamp is already in the arsenal of a home craftsman:

  • A drill inserted into a hammer drill chuck is practically the only option for trouble-free work with concrete;
  • A set of wrenches will help with tightening the anchor hook or nuts on threaded rods with the overhead fastening method;
  • Stripping the wire insulation is done using a sharp knife;
  • Terminal connectors are used for switching contacts;
  • A screwdriver is necessary for the screw method of fixing wires;
  • To seal the electrical wiring entry points, you may need fire-resistant foam or mineral wool, followed by a layer of putty flush with the ceiling surface.

Tools

Ceiling Hook Installation

The process of installing anchors is quite simple and does not require extensive explanation. A hole of the required depth and diameter is drilled at a selected point on the ceiling. A metal anchor is inserted into it and first screwed in by hand, and then using a wrench, the hook is screwed onto which the lamp can then be hung.

Anchor bolt mounting

To protect the hammer drill from dust, sand and small concrete chips, you can put a disposable cup made of thick paper on the drill. Installation of a clamping suspension, on the one hand, is simpler, since there is no need to drill the ceiling, but on the other hand, it is somewhat more complicated and requires some explanation. Due to the specifics of its design, this fastening can only be used on hollow concrete floors. A spacer rod 10-15 cm long and up to 3-5 mm in diameter is inserted into the inlet hole in the slab and pushed into the internal cavity.

The next step to complete is installing the hanging strip. This is a narrow metal plate, at one end of which there is a series of holes, at the other end there is a small hook on which you can hang a chandelier. The plank is taken in one hand and placed inside the concrete slab. With the other hand, the spacer rod is threaded through one of the holes. The closer it is located to the edge of the plate, the greater the distance from the ceiling to the hanging hook. This way you can adjust the suspension protrusion by 3-5 cm.

Next, the mounting ends of the chandelier are connected to the electrical wiring. The entire assembly process is completed by installing a plastic decorative lining close to the ceiling. Due to the presence of a slot, it fits onto the hanging bar, fixing its position and completely covering the hole in the concrete slab.

Installation of the trim strip

Installing some kind of auxiliary support surface is the most universal method. An overhead strip for hanging is usually supplied with the chandelier, but if necessary, you can make it yourself or select a suitable bracket from the assortment of the nearest hardware store. The point of this installation method is to disperse the attachment points to the ceiling.

Cross bar

As standard, the overlay strip can be made as a cross or a single narrow metal plate. Fastening to the ceiling surface is carried out using four or two dowel nails. The chandelier is directly fixed using decorative cap nuts that are screwed onto threaded rods welded to the plate.

If for some reason the standard fastening is not suitable for installation, you can use perforated mounting brackets of suitable size or make your own metal plate of suitable dimensions and make all the necessary holes on it. Instead of welding threaded rods, you can successfully use a screw-nut connection. Next, the installation sequence of the lamp completely coincides with the factory version.

Sealing the wiring entry

The standard entry of an electric wire for connecting lighting is carried out in the middle of the room through a hole in the ceiling with a diameter of 5-7 cm. In a concrete slab inside the cavities during the construction of a house, the cable is routed to the switch and connected to the general network. These channels are most often not sealed and sounds and odors from neighboring rooms easily spread through them. Replacing a chandelier is a very good reason to eliminate this drawback.

Hole in concrete

The easiest option is to foam all the free space inside with fire-resistant polyurethane foam. However, the apparent ease of the solution can later bring a number of problems if you need to hang another lamp. To get to the connection terminals, you will have to work very well with a knife, cutting out the frozen polyurethane foam in small pieces. When using mineral wool, all free space is tightly filled with small pieces of this non-combustible insulation. The material is fastened inside the slab due to the high elasticity of the fibers. The compressed cotton wool, straightening inside the hole, completely seals it.

To completely isolate the room from extraneous odors and sounds, the surface is puttied. Gray reinforced tape is glued over the cotton wool with a slight extension to the ceiling (up to 5 cm). Then serpyanka masking tape is attached to it, which will ensure the necessary adhesion of the solution to the surface. The final step is to apply and level a thin layer of finishing putty.

Electrical safety issues

As in all matters relating to the connection of household electrical appliances, the installation of a chandelier on a concrete ceiling must be carried out taking into account the requirements of current regulatory documentation. Before drilling mounting holes, it is advisable to check the wiring location. For these purposes, you can use a universal tester or locator. When the probe enters an electric field, the device will emit a sound signal. Of course, there will not be a 100% guarantee, but the likelihood of damaging the supply wire with a drill will be reduced many times over.

During the installation process, a situation often arises when it is necessary to connect the copper wires of the lamp with the old aluminum wiring. In this case, switching issues should be approached with special attention, since poorly executed contact of these two metals is a source of increased danger and can cause a fire.

Aluminum-copper lugs

It is absolutely not permissible to connect copper and aluminum wires by twisting. For the most reliable switching, it is necessary to use terminal clamps (preferably those that use screw fastening). Single-core conductors are stripped of insulation, inserted into connectors and secured. For stranded copper wire, it is necessary to perform an additional operation of tinning the mounting end to fasten the individual wires into a single monolith and ensure reliable electrical contact between them.

As you can see, to hang a chandelier on a concrete ceiling, there is no need to use complex devices and tools. If necessary, instead of standard factory fasteners, you can make your own or select their analogues. The most important thing, as in any work, is accuracy, lack of haste and compliance with safety regulations.

R ask a question how to hang a chandelier or another ceiling lamp, you can resort to the services of an electrician. Or, with the help of our article, hang the chandelier yourself. Installing a chandelier with your own hands is not a difficult task and the only difficulty is that you may need a hammer drill (literally for five minutes of work). If you just decide to change the old chandelier, and the old chandelier is in good condition, then all you need are screwdrivers (Phillips and narrow, 2-2.5 mm slot) and small pliers.

Choosing and purchasing a chandelier

After you select a suitable lamp model in the store, they will most likely give it to you in disassembled form. You can ask that the chandelier be assembled right in the store, but it’s not very convenient to carry a bulky, fragile device in your car, let alone public transport. When making a purchase, carefully check the complete set of the chandelier, especially the mounting details, so as not to return to the store later for a tiny nut. We recommend a good online store where you will find the widest selection of chandeliers and other lamps with delivery throughout Russia.

Modern inexpensive (up to 5 thousand rubles) models, with all the external diversity, have only two types of fastenings. A loop that clings to a hook in the ceiling, shown in the pictures below, or a mounting plate fixed to the ceiling, to which the chandelier is then attached using bolts and decorative nuts, the section can be seen in the pictures below. The mounting point is covered with a decorative overlay - a cup that moves on the chandelier suspension. The cup is fixed in the raised position either by a tight plastic washer or by a small bolt. In the second option, the decorative overlay is often also a fastening element; we will tell you how to hang such chandeliers further.

Chandelier assembly

How to assemble a chandelier is usually clear even without instructions (which, by the way, are often not given!), however, a little advice - if possible, take a photo of the assembled chandelier in the store, at least using a mobile phone, less later I'll have to rack my brains. When assembling, do not be lazy to check the wire connections; there have been cases when the lamps did not light up when turned on, or even a short circuit occurred.

The assembled chandelier must be fixed to the ceiling, that is, the chandelier must be hung. In its simplest form, this is a regular hook. Alas, the simplest option is not always the best. The fact is that the height of the decorative “cup” is not always enough to cover this entire rather bulky structure, and an unsightly gap remains between the overlay and the ceiling. If you bend the hook, then putting some types of loops on it becomes a problem.

How to hang a chandelier using a hook

However, hanging a chandelier using a hook is, in most cases, convenient and secure. There are several types of anchors. If you need to hang a small lamp, weighing one to one and a half kilograms, you can use a regular hook with a screw thread, screwed into a plastic plug - dowel. For heavy chandeliers, it is necessary to use metal expansion anchors, with a length of at least fifty and a cross-section of ten millimeters.

The fastening device using a hook is carried out as follows: using a hammer drill, a hole with a diameter of at least 8 mm is drilled in the ceiling for a plastic dowel or anchor. When using plastic dowels, use corrugated ones with a minimum length of 40 mm. It is better not to use smooth dowels; they are held in the slab much worse. If, after drilling a hole, you find yourself in a void in the slab (which often happens), it’s okay, the dowel will fix even better.

After this, screw the hook into the dowel, or install an expansion anchor and hang the chandelier. The wires of the chandelier are connected to the wires coming from them using a special block equipped with clamping bolts (sometimes this block is called a terminal block). It is to tighten the bolts of this block that you will need a slotted screwdriver with a narrow blade. The block comes complete with the chandelier. If it is not there, they are twisted and insulated with insulating tape. It would be better, of course, solder the twists, but you can do without it, especially when using energy-saving lamps. Move the decorative “cup” close to the ceiling and fix it.

How to hang a chandelier using a decorative strip

Hanging a chandelier using a metal strip is a little more difficult. The plank is applied to the ceiling at the location of the chandelier. Use a pencil or thin marker to mark the locations for drilling holes for the dowels. Having removed the bar, drill holes and drive dowels into them. The fastening bolts are inserted into the bar, moved apart to a distance corresponding to the distance between the holes in the decorative trim of the chandelier, and so that they do not move, they are clamped with nuts.

Then, the plank is placed on the ceiling, screwing it with screws. Next, the most difficult part of the work, which is best done with an assistant. The decorative box must be placed against the ceiling above the plank so that the exposed bolts fit into the holes in the box. Before this, connect the wires of the chandelier and. To make it more comfortable, stand as high as possible. When performing these operations, an assistant must hold the chandelier (you will not connect the wires with one hand). When the bolts align with the holes, the decorative box is pressed to the ceiling and secured with decorative nuts.
