Everyone knows that when going on a tourist trip (on foot, on water, on horseback) in sparsely populated areas, we always forget to take some important little things with us, but... if you get lost in the forest, be sure to read. But it is also well known that for our tourists this is not a reason for despondency. Because in such cases they almost always help him out -

Let’s say you took with you a very sufficient supply of glass bottles with different contents, but forgot to take mugs and glasses. And they didn’t even take a glass! A civilized Western tourist would consider the event hopelessly ruined and need to return. But not you, because you are our tourist, and you have no doubt: something from the field of handicrafts will save you. Carefully examining the empty bottle that you are holding by the middle part, you notice that the lower part of the bottle has the shape of a glass, and the upper part is the shape of an overturned glass. And that's it, problem solved! Then it’s a matter of technique: all that remains is to cut the bottle in the middle. It’s clear that you don’t take a glass cutter on a hike, but you remember a trick you once saw with cutting off a glass bottle with a thread. And the trick was as follows. The bottle was tied with a thread soaked in kerosene, the thread was set on fire, and when it burned out, the bottle was abruptly immersed in cold water. Here it cracked right along the burning line of the thread, and all that remained was to carefully separate the halves of the bottle.

And so, revealing the focus - Bottle trimming(from the “handmade crafts” section)

Without further delay, we get down to business. Let's start with preparation necessary materials and tools. This:

- Glass bottle;

- long strong thread;

- kerosene or lighter fluid (or other flammable liquid);

- a basin with cold water (or a body of water on the shore of which you made a halt);

- matches or lighter;

- a tablespoon for tapping on the bottle;

- protective glasses;

- a brick or stone with a rough surface to remove sharp nicks on the cut (it’s quite good if you happen to have a small file, a sharpening stone or sandpaper - zero) lying around in the bushes.

Then we move on to main procedure .

1. Having cut the thread to the required length (2-3 turns around the bottle plus tying a knot), soak it in a flammable liquid for a couple of minutes.

2. Very carefully, trying not to smear the flammable liquid on the glass outside the cutting line, tightly tie the thread 2-3 turns around the bottle along the intended cutting line. At the same time, make sure that the strip of thread is of a minimum width, and that the knot is also of a minimum size. This will ensure a smooth cutting edge.

3. Wear safety glasses. Holding the bottle horizontally above a basin or above the surface of a reservoir at a safe distance from your face, light the thread and slowly turn the bottle around its axis. This is so that the thread burns as simultaneously as possible along the entire circumference. Let the thread burn out completely until it burns out entirely on its own.

4. Then immediately plunge the entire bottle into cold water, holding it with your hands by the bottom and neck. As a result of a sharp change in temperature, the glass will crack exactly along the combustion line of the thread (which is why the layer of thread on the bottle should be narrow).

5. If the glass does not break by itself, then you gently tap the working part of the spoon (which is on the side of the mouth) along the line of cracking of the glass (the spoon should be at hand so as not to miss the moment). After this, the bottle is divided into a glass and a glass.

6. Smooth out any protrusions on the edges of the cut parts using a brick, file, etc. Of course, do this in water so that small fragments of glass and brick do not fly away in the wind, aiming for your eyes. At the very least, the glass should be wet enough. Having finished sanding the edges, you get a wonderful glass and a nice glass for use. Just don’t forget to plug the bottom of the glass with a cork (that is, the neck of the former bottle).

7. Handmade crafts using fire require compliance with fire safety requirements. Therefore, before starting the entire procedure described, make sure that you have everything you need in case of a small fire. You have water at hand, all you have to do is have some kind of thick blanket just in case. And, what is also important, you begin the operation only after you have completely sobered up, otherwise you may neglect fire safety and burn something necessary.

Once you learn how to cut a glass bottle well with thread, you can use this skill to make other handmade crafts from bottles to decorate your home. This could be a flower vase, a table lamp, a champagne flute. At home, you will even have a diamond-coated file, not to mention fine sandpaper, to polish the cut line. You can cut the bottle not only parallel to the bottom, but also at any angle. The cutting line can be pre-drawn using an eraser for money and a felt-tip pen.

Useful articles

Hello, dear readers! Decor from glass bottles has been quite popular lately; by the way, we have already discussed this topic in the review ““, and since many are interested in the question of how to cut a glass bottle at home, without using a glass cutter, I would like to devote today’s master class to a simple but interesting way to cut bottles with thread...

In this connection, the topic of this master class is “How to cut a bottle with a thread - nothing complicated!”

For work we will need:

  1. Glass bottle;
  2. Wool threads;
  3. Solvent (you can use kerosene, alcohol, cologne, acetone);
  4. Scissors or stationery knife;
  5. Gloves (will protect the skin of your hands from exposure to the solvent);
  6. Lighter or matches;
  7. To protect your eyes, just in case, glasses (in fact, there are no fragments, but there is no need to be too careful);
  8. A deep basin filled with cold water.

So, how to trim a bottle with thread? We take a wool thread, measure it and cut it so that it is enough for 3-4 turns of the bottle.

We immerse the measured and cut thread in the solvent, and immediately wrap the bottle in the place where we plan to make the “cut”. The thread can be simply wrapped or tied in a knot; in this master class I simply did the wrapping.

After that, we set this thread on fire with matches or a lighter, and it is better to hold the bottle in an inclined position - strictly horizontally (parallel to the ground), carefully twisting it around its axis.

The fire will burn for about 30-40 seconds, as soon as the lit thread goes out, quickly lower the bottle into a prepared basin filled with cold water.

Next, the characteristic sound of cracked glass will be heard, and the bottle will instantly split into two parts. This type of glass cutting is based on a rapid change in temperature; we all know from physics lessons that when heated, glass expands, and when cooled, it contracts, respectively, with a sharp change in temperature, a kind of destruction of the glass occurs and it simply cracks!

I tried cutting with alcohol, there is a master class on the blog, but this is the first time I’ve heard about vegetable oil. Interested.

Glass in the interior, as well as in our lives, is an undoubted favorite among many common things. It is simply impossible to imagine life without dishes. But metal products are not found in such quantities, but metal with glass can be a real delicacy. And if the glass is bottles crafted by skillful hands, the effect can be very impressive. I had such a vessel for wine, in a forged stand; if it weren’t for our constant moving, it would still serve and be pleasing to the eye, but the glass parts broke, and the stand itself ceased to be useful. But forged flower stands are more familiar and can last forever, the flowers change, and she constantly decorates the house. And, of course, you can’t cut metal with vegetable oil))

Therefore, I will return to glass, New Year is coming soon, parts from the bottle can become wonderful holiday decorations.

There are many ways to use bottles, cut and whole: feeders, lamp legs, furniture components (shelves, coffee tables), containers for watering flowers. But you don’t see this kind of gastronomic use very often, I really like it. There is jute, buttons, and corks. By the way, I need an oil can; I would be quite happy with one like this:

It couldn’t be simpler, ordinary glasses look beautiful and the basis for any decor is simply ideal.

This composition simply amazed me.

My favorite wickerwork, wood, bottle with cork - just chic! I wouldn't mind some cheese either. Well, it's about time. If you don’t eat after 19:00, then the evening will pass without eating.

It’s good that at least they didn’t put candy in this luxurious vase))

A little romance

I love autumn, I'm looking forward to spring!)

You can’t cut it the way it’s suggested in the video, it’s just beautiful, I couldn’t pass it up.

Round glass can serve not only as a vessel for liquid, but also as a source of inspiration. If you know how to cut glass bottles and jars, you can make a lot of amazing things. Starting from glasses and ashtrays, and ending with lamps and designer spatulas, the number of crafts made from recycled materials is limited only by a flight of fancy. It's amazing how original and beautiful things can be made from practically free material. The main thing is the desire to create, and we will talk about the process itself in this article.

Types of glass cutters for bottles

Today there are many ready-made devices for cutting glass jars and bottles. They all have a different design, but according to the type of action they are divided into only two groups: cutting and heating. The general principle of both groups remains the same - the bottle is fixed in a horizontal position and rotates around a glass cutter or heating element. The operating principle of the devices is quite similar, but has some peculiarities.

The roller glass cutter for bottles has a simple design and is widely used by DIY enthusiasts. Can be assembled with your own hands from available materials. The cost of the finished device varies from several hundred to a couple of thousand rubles. The cut line is fairly straight, but the edges require sanding. The best option for home craftsmen.

A bottle cutter with a heating element has a more complex mechanism, but also a higher quality cut. The device operates from the mains or battery. You can assemble one if you have special knowledge, but at your own peril and risk. Ready-made devices cost several thousand rubles and are unlikely to interest the majority of the population. Suitable for creative workshops or designers.

DIY glass cutter for bottles

There is no need to spend money on buying a glass cutter for bottles. This device is very simple, and if you have certain parts and desire, you can make it yourself. Below, we will provide step-by-step photo instructions for assembling a convenient and practical cutter. You may have to buy some parts, but they cost a penny and are sold at any market or hardware store.

Required materials:

  • Wooden base: 25 x 14 x 2
  • Side bar: 25 x 4 x 2
  • End block (stop): 11 x 4 x 2
  • Wooden slats: 25 x 1 x 2
  • Roll-out rollers: 4 pcs with a maximum diameter of 4 cm (preferably fixed rollers with rubber coating)
  • Cable channel: 25x2 (with minimum thickness)
  • Roller glass cutter
  • A little PVA glue and a handful of screws

Assembling the device
We will start with the most complex and exquisite stage of the work - assembling the cutting mechanism. We take a wooden strip 25 x 1 x 2 and saw off two 3 cm long pieces from it. Carefully make through longitudinal holes in the resulting pieces of wood. They will serve as grooves for installing a hinge on which the guide with the glass cutter will run.

From the same rail, cut off another piece, 9-10 cm long, and arrange all the parts as in the photo below. We cut the cover of the cable channel to a length equal to the size of three wooden parts (2 pieces of 3 cm each and the width of the rail - 2 cm), approximately 8 centimeters.

At the next stage, we will fix the cutter on the guide. To do this, it is better to make a small recess at the end of the rail, which will serve as a kind of limiter for the glass cutter.

To prevent the wood from cracking when tightening the self-tapping screw, at the attachment point, you should make a hole in advance with a drill of a smaller diameter.

If your self-tapping screw, like the cutter in the photo, has recesses for breaking off glass, then you can use them for fastening. If there are no grooves, or they are located further than the cutting roller, then it is better to drill a mounting hole in the metal head. In general, the main thing is that the glass cutter is installed as in the photo.

After securing the cutter, it's time to put the structure together. To do this, screw two 3 cm bars along the edges of the cable channel cover. We screw hinge screws, no more than 4 centimeters long, into the pre-prepared grooves in the bars (long ones can be cut off). We drill a through hole in the lower part of the guide rail, install it between the bars and fix it with self-tapping screws. In order for the rail to rise, its lower corner must be smoothed using sandpaper or a file. We look at the photo and repeat.

Having finished designing the cutting mechanism, you can proceed to assembling the working platform of the future bottle cutter.
First of all, we attach a side block 25 x 4 x 2 to the base. These parts can be connected using self-tapping screws, screwing them into the back of the base. You can also use PVA glue or epoxy resin.

When the side part is fixed, you can proceed to installing the roll-out rollers. The first pair of wheels is installed at a distance of 3-4 cm from the upper edge of the base. The next pair is located 12 cm down. For more elongated bottles, you can prepare another set of holes, 5 cm below the second pair of rollers. Pay attention to the photo.

The final stage of assembly will be attaching the lower part of the cable channel to the edge of the side bar, and fitting the end stop with screws or glue.

With a slight movement of the hand, attach the cover with the cutter to the base of the cable channel and the device is ready for use!

How to cut a bottle without a glass cutter

A compact bottle cutter is a very convenient device, but it is made for frequent use. What to do for those for whom this procedure is isolated and will not be repeated in the next decade. Buying a ready-made device is expensive, but it takes a long time to assemble and it’s not guaranteed that it will turn out as it should. As you already understand, now we will talk about how to cut a bottle at home without a glass cutter.

This method of glass processing is based on heating with sudden cooling. For a sudden change in temperature, we need a meter of woolen thread, a flammable liquid (acytone, gasoline, kerosene, alcohol), a large container of ice water and, in fact, a bottle. Having prepared all the components, you can get down to business.

We dip the woolen thread into a container with a flammable liquid so that it is completely saturated, and we wrap it in a thin line over the site of the future chip. Next, set fire to the thread and wait for it to burn out completely. While burning, hold the bottle horizontally and constantly rotate it so that the fire evenly heats the entire line. As soon as the flame goes out, immediately immerse the bottle in the prepared container with water. After a couple of seconds, the characteristic sound of glass breaking will be heard, signaling the successful separation of the bottle. If there is no click within 5 seconds, you can apply a little force and try to break it.

The above technique can be successfully used for controlled chipping of most types of glass containers, but sometimes there are exceptions. The effectiveness of the temperature difference largely depends on the strength of the glass.

For those who want to see with a more clear example how to cut a glass bottle at home without a glass cutter, we recommend watching the following video.

Save this page on your social media. network and return to it at a convenient time.

Video channel Pavel Cherepnin. The Internet is full of videos on how to cut a glass bottle. Most of the methods really work. The article shows the best way, even at home. The only trouble is that the authors show only successful moments, but do not give details. Perhaps you watched a video about a steam engine and got the idea to make it out of glass, and the best material is glass bottles. All you have to do is cut it in half and you get a nice clear cylinder.

Look at the machine the master made.

The master approached the problem scientifically. First, he tested all the basic methods, and only after that he began to develop his own method.

The very first method I wanted to try was to make a wooden corner. At one end there is a glass cutter installed, at the other end there is a bolt that holds the bottle when we twist it. Assembling the structure is not technically difficult and can be implemented in any way, but on the screen at the moment you can see how the master did it. The design did not justify itself, and in the end we had to do it differently.

The logic behind how this device works at home is clear. We insert the bottle into the bolt. A glass cutter is inserted underneath the bottle. Next, press the bottle on it and scroll. In theory, you should get a straight line on the bottle, which we will later split using temperature. That is, we first heat the bottle and then cool it sharply, or vice versa. As a rule, glass breaks due to a large difference in temperature. Well, the line marked with a glass cutter will allow you to direct the split in the desired direction. I decided to limit the area of the bottle with plasticine. We light the kettle and wait for the water to boil. During this time, cool the bottle under cold tap water. Mixed up the order, didn't split.

There is another way to cut it on the Internet - wrap a string around a bottle, pour acetone on it, set it on fire, wait until it warms up and put it in cold water. The acetone burned out quickly and did not heat anything. I decided to wind more threads and set it on fire, but that didn’t help either. The problem is actually in the nylon threads. They do not absorb acetone, which is why combustion does not last long. There is no particular heat, and the bottle does not break.

I decided to try using regular sewing threads. And they don't roll either. They burn a little longer, but this is also not enough. Thoughts have already begun to appear that organic material such as cotton or flax is needed. I took threads called floss. Used for various embroideries, decorative sewing and more. As you can see, it burns better. The acetone is absorbed and heats the glass. The bottle broke off smoothly, but with a surprise. The split did not go along the line cut with a glass cutter, but 1 centimeter higher. At first I didn’t notice this, due to the relative evenness of the chip and the fact that the threads hid the line that I had marked with a glass cutter. But you can see that the intended line is completely untouched. Apparently, the two actions of cutting bottles are in no way connected with each other.
I decided to carry out the procedure again to chip exactly along the line. But the second time the procedure does not work. This method only works well on a whole bottle. No matter how hard I tried, nothing useful came of it. Each subsequent chip became more and more uneven, if it happened at all. I repeated all the chipping steps several more times in the hope of getting an even glass. I chopped about a dozen vessels, but I couldn’t get a straight edge using this method. It is possible to obtain containers for household purposes in this way, but, unfortunately, it is not possible to produce any high-quality items. You can't level it with a sharpening wheel either, because it just breaks the glass and you end up with splintered crap. Of course, hope still glimmered that maybe one of the next bottles would chip off more smoothly, and with a little work with sandpaper, we would make a passable glass. The method is generally not suitable for such purposes. Something had to be changed.

6 ways to cut a glass bottle smoothly

sdelaysam-svoimirukami.ru

There are several simple ways to cut the neck of a glass bottle. You may ask why is this necessary? From a beautiful cut bottle you can make a cool glass, a flower vase or a stand for various small items. But, before you start cutting beautiful bottles, I still recommend practicing on ordinary beer bars, since this business requires experience and some dexterity: it doesn’t always work out the first time.

So, I’ll tell you the simplest ways to cut off the neck of a glass bottle.

Here you will need a glass cutter. You can use a factory model or make it yourself. The design of a homemade device can be different: the main thing is that the bottle and the cutting element are securely fixed, but the bottle rotates freely.

Important! When cutting, you need to make one pass: this will ensure the most even edge.
Next, you need to prepare hot (boiling water) and cold (with ice) water. First pour hot water along the cut line so that the glass warms up well.

After this, immediately pour cold water over the bottle.

Due to temperature contraction, the glass should break off along the preliminary cut line. If this does not happen, the procedure must be repeated (douse it first with hot and then with cold water).

Method 2 – candle flame

This method will require a candle and a piece of ice (you can use a container of very cold water). To break off the neck, draw a straight line on the bottle with a marker, along which the glass warms up well above the candle.

The cutting line is then cooled with ice, after which the glass is cracked by lightly tapping it.

Method 3 – nargev from friction

Another way to break off a bottleneck is to use frictional heating on the glass. To do this, two plastic ties are put on the bottle, which serve as limiters. Three turns of twine are wound between them, after which the twine begins to move forward/backward by the free ends.

After 2-3 minutes, when the glass is sufficiently hot, the bottle is placed in cold water, and when lightly tapped, a chip occurs along the heating line.

If you make a small cut on the bottle with a glass cutter before rubbing with twine, then you do not need to use cold water: the glass will crack when heated on its own.

Method 4 - installation with filament

This method will require a transformer, for example, from a microwave oven with the secondary winding removed, instead of which three turns of a powerful power cable are installed.
The free ends of the wire are closed through a thick wire. The stand (base) must be heat-resistant and dielectric.

The next step is to connect the transformer to the electrical network. When you turn on the transformer, the filament will heat up: a bottle is applied to it and gradually rotates. When the glass is heated, the neck along the heating line will disconnect, so you need to make sure that the heating is uniform and along the same line.

Method 5 – burning rope

This method requires natural twine and some refined lighter gasoline. A piece of twine is cut to the length required to wrap around the bottle at least 3 times. This piece of string is then soaked in gasoline until it is completely saturated.

Twine soaked in gasoline is wound around the bottle in the place where it is necessary to chip and set it on fire.

When the gasoline has almost burned out, the bottle is lowered into cold water, where the temperature difference causes the glass to burst along the heating line.

Method 6 – use specialized equipment

This method involves using an electric tile cutting machine. The diamond blade cuts thick glass well and evenly. It is recommended to work with gloves, a protective mask and goggles, as glass dust is very dangerous. The advantage of using a cutter is the ability to cut the bottle into small pucks, which is not possible with other methods.

You can also use an electric multitool with a rotating working head for cutting. But when working with this tool, you need to securely fix the bottle so that the cut is smooth.

In conclusion, I would like to add that not all of the methods discussed are safe. When trying to repeat, follow safety precautions and use protective equipment (gloves and goggles).
