Shelf for I do-it-yourself utensils in the country kitchen will look more interesting than purchased ones. Especially in a country-style interior. An attentive guest will always notice the products that you have made yourself: you are both pleased and interested. Moreover, making a shelf for dishes is very simple. In this article, we will talk about this in detail.

DISH SHELF LIKE YULIA VYSOTSKAYA

The idea to make a shelf for dishes was inspired by one photo published in the magazine"7 days" ... It shows the famous TV presenter Yulia Vysotskaya, who knows the wonderful one, is depicted in her studio preparing another culinary masterpiece. In the background, a wooden crockery shelf with jars of spices hangs on the wall.

Such furniture will serve as a decoration for any kitchen, and in terms of convenience, it will not be superfluous. Therefore, without hesitation, we decided to make a similar shelf for our dacha.

We will make the shelf from the remnants of wooden boards that were left over from the manufacture. You can choose any sizes, based on where you hang it and what you will store on it. A 50 cm wide crockery shelf is suitable for our kitchen., 80 cm high ... It will have 4 horizontal shelves and 2 vertical racks.

MAKING A DISH SHELF

Let's proceed directly to manufacturing. Take a pine board 15 cm wide, 2 cm thick and cut 2 pieces of 80 cm... Using a pencil, we will mark up on one board in such a way that the horizontal shelves are located at a distance of 20, 25 and 30 cm from each other... We will also draw 2 projections under the wooden slats so that the dishes do not fall off the shelf. With an electric jigsaw, carefully cut off the excess along the drawn line. Now we will attach the finished sample to another board and outline it with a pencil along the contour. Let's do a little jigsaw work again. We should get 2 identical racks of the dish shelves.

By the way, it will be noted that without a jigsaw, it would be much more difficult to engage in dacha construction.

When working with wood, you have to saw a lot, so the help of this tool can hardly be overestimated. Using a jigsaw, we made a wooden door, built a country toilet and shower, made a floor stand for flowers, made a transforming bench and a garden bench. I don't even know if we could have dealt with all this without this wonderful tool.

Let's go back to our crockery shelf. After the two vertical posts have been cut out, they need to be sanded well. To do this, we will screw a grinding plate onto an angle grinder or, in a simple way, a grinder and grind the racks with sandpaper with the number P120 or P180.

We need to ensure that the boards feel smooth to the touch, without burrs or roughness.

Now let's cut off 4 pieces of 50 cm.

These will be horizontal shelves. We will also sand them with sandpaper. Then we will connect them with self-tapping screws to the racks. To prevent the tree from bursting, in the places where the screws are attached, we drill holes with a thin drill and tighten the screws.

Our crockery shelf will have a back wall. We will make it out of lining. Let's cut several planks 80 cm longand connect them together.

Beat the back wall to the shelf frame with thin studs.

Now let's decorate the crockery shelf a little. To do this, take a wooden plank measuring 4 cm by 50 cm, draw a smooth line in a half circle with a pencil and cut along it with a jigsaw. Using a metal crown, drill several holes with a drill and grind the bar with sandpaper.

Screw the bar to the top shelf with self-tapping screws.

To prevent the dishes from falling off the shelf, we attach 2 strips made of wooden fillets to the protrusions of the racks, which we previously cut out with a jigsaw. We will also nail them with carnations.

Our crockery shelf takes on a finished look. It remains to screw a couple of hangers and attach several hooks for towels to the back wall, which we specially made 5 cm longer than the frame.

If desired, our shelf for dishes can be painted with a protective varnish.

We hang the shelf in the most conspicuous place, put the kitchen utensils on it and enjoy the work done. If you liked the article, share it on social networks.

As you can see, open structures are more convenient to use than cabinets, the doors of which often have to be opened and closed in order to get one or another item for cooking. But it is necessary to take into account some of the nuances of such inventions, which may be for some housewives. significant disadvantage:

  • While hanging shelves can help you find the cookware or spice you want, not everyone might like the kitchenware on display.
  • Large items like large pots and pans rarely fit on a narrow surface.
  • Open shelves and the utensils stored on them are often contaminated with dust, stains or soot, so they need to be cleaned frequently. The installation of a powerful hood will help to reduce the formation of dust deposits. Stubborn stains can be avoided by installing shelves above the tables away from the stove.

Types of decorative shelves by type of construction

    Save

Open shelves are selected taking into account the style of the kitchen. But it's not just color and material that play an important role. The correct order of objects must be organized in the room, therefore they are made in various designs so that they occupy a convenient location without violating the freedom of space. There are several types of designs:

  • Classic;
  • Corner;
  • Lattice;
  • Equipped with additional drawers;
  • Decorated with lighting.

Classic

    Save

Most often, ordinary open shelves are used in the kitchen, which are easy to install and are a universal solution.

Classic type easily fits into a small room. The doorless system helps you quickly find the right accessories, which significantly saves time when cooking. Often, dishes, jars of cereals, bottles with spices, and decorative items are placed on open shelves.

With the help of classic options, they often make a multi-level system above work tables, which completes a single composition of the room and helps to solve the problem with a large number of kitchen details.

Corner

Corner options originally made for small kitchens. Such shelves are compact and economical. The structure is usually installed over a corner sofa or tabletop in the corner. Creating a composition in several levels helps to place everything you need on the shelves.

Lattice

Shelves in the form of lattices differ in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. The visual airiness of the products gives the room lightness and spaciousness. Such products are easy to care for, as they rarely get dirty and practically do not accumulate dust. Various protective solutions help to increase the wear resistance of the material. Basically, lattice racks are used for dishes.

Equipped with additional drawers

Shelves, equipped with small drawers are an excellent alternative to bulky wall cabinets. They are especially relevant for small kitchens.

Small boxes are convenient for storing jars of spices and baking ingredients. Small boxes are suitable for storing pastry accessories and other little things that are necessary to create a comfortable cooking environment.

Decorated with lighting

    Save

Shelves with built-in lighting acquire an additional function of lighting the room. Two or three lamps of any shape, built into the shelves from the bottom, not only well illuminate the place where food is prepared, but also give a special charm to the room.

As a backlight can be used:

  • LED strips;
  • Spotlights;
  • Small sconces.

If it is necessary to enhance the lighting effect, then mirrored walls can be added to the shelves. Reflective material contributes to better light diffusion. Such lighting brings a special coziness and warmth to the interior.

Selection of kitchen shelves by type of material

In a room where temperature extremes and high humidity are observed, you need to purchase furniture that is highly resistant to such factors. Durable and wear-resistant material guarantees long-term use of products.

Today in the production of kitchen shelves they use:

  • Tree,
  • Metal,
  • A rock,
  • Glass,
  • Plastic.

Wooden hanging

    Save

Products made from natural raw materials always look beautiful and create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Wooden surfaces are suitable for almost any interior. The most durable types of wood are oak, beech, alder and pine. The tree is used in country, rustic, provence styles.

Before purchasing wooden products, one must not forget that wood has a low moisture resistance. Open shelves should be installed away from household appliances and the cooking area. In order for the material to serve for a long time, it is covered with waterproof solutions.

Wooden products are characterized by high prices. Therefore, some people prefer to make them with their own hands, sometimes replacing natural wood with MDF or chipboard.

Metal products

    Save

Metal surfaces go well with kitchen appliances and other details with metal elements. Usually, lattice types of structures are used, since solid surfaces visually make the interior heavier and are not lightweight products.

To preserve their appearance for a long time, the shelves are covered with anti-corrosion solutions. If the original color of the metal does not fit into the overall design of the room, then you can choose an option painted in a different shade.

Metallic surfaces fit perfectly into modern designs.

Stone

    Save

Anyone who appreciates natural material often acquires stone shelves for storing kitchen utensils. Heavy products require a solid foundation on which they will be installed.

Stone shelves are quite expensive; not everyone can afford such a luxury. Manufacturers take this nuance into account and use chips from cheap raw materials to make slabs. With a wide range of colors and textures, you can create a luxurious classic interior with imitation of natural stone.

Glass

    Save

Airiness and lightness will be given to the interior glass surfaces... Visually, they are almost invisible, but they can fit as many items as on racks made of other materials.

To make the shelves durable, they are made with a thickness of at least 6 mm. For greater reliability, glass hangers can be installed on additional fasteners. Strong construction can be made with dishes, jars and other items.

Transparent material is used in all directions, but it looks best in high-tech and minimalist styles. The only drawback of glass products is their low impact resistance. If the glass is handled roughly, it can be scratched or cracked.

    Save

Plastic

The most readily available material is plastic. Especially for kitchens, materials are used that contain the least amount of harmful substances.

Plastic products are lightweight and easy to assemble. The shelves are available on the market in a variety of shades and textures. Often, plastic is designed to look like natural wood or stone.

    Save

Plastic products are for light items only. Heavy utensils and containers should not be placed on them, as the surfaces cannot support heavy weight.

  3. The ends are sanded with sandpaper. When using chipboard, the edges are sealed with veneer.
  4. The shelf is treated with a protective varnish.
  5. Wooden surfaces are connected to brackets.
  6. Holes are drilled in the wall for the workpiece.
  7. With the help of dowels, the structure is firmly fixed to the wall.

For the organic and orderly space, it is the hinged shelves that are chosen. The universal solution contributes to the creation of a harmonious kitchen design.

Photo of open shelves above the table

    Another undoubted advantage of open shelves is that they visually expand the space, making it more free. With this, you can still place all the necessary items on the shelves. Among other things, these shelves are mobile, so they can be easily dismantled.

    Disadvantages of using open structures in the kitchen

    Having decided to install open shelves in your kitchen, you should familiarize yourself with the possible drawbacks that can make their use inconvenient.

    Among the main disadvantages are the following:

    • items placed on open shelves will tend to become covered in sticks and soot more quickly;
    • the need to maintain the contents of open shelves constantly in perfect condition, since it is always in sight;
    • the difficulty of placing such shelves in some.

    Considering all the advantages and disadvantages of such models, the best option would be to combine both open and closed shelves.

    Shelf layouts

    If you decide that you definitely want your kitchen to have such a modern and interesting element as open shelves, you should carefully consider how to fit them into the headset so as not to break the symmetry.

    Having decided to install such shelves, you should first of all decide on the place. The main rule to adhere to here is not to place open shelves in the immediate vicinity. Otherwise, you just risk that the contents of the shelves will be constantly splattered with grease.

    One of the best options for the location of the shelves is to install them directly above the cooking area at some distance from the stove.

    The importance of the correct installation of the shelves is also determined by the fact that the stylistic perception of the entire room will depend on this factor. Open shelves can be a smooth transition from the cooking area to or even.

    Using corner shelves in the interior of the kitchen

    The location of the shelves will depend on the size of the kitchen, cooking area, quantity and style of the room. In some cases, corner shelves in the kitchen will look appropriate.

    Corner shelves are ideal for use. Interesting design ideas can be perfectly applied to them. So, an ingenious solution would be to install corner wooden shelves almost to the very ceiling. As a result, visually, the shelves will look like decorative beams, which, moreover, have a functional purpose.

    Tip: Kitchens with corner shelves are the best solution to save space.

    The original solution will be the use of asymmetric shelves. However, it should be borne in mind that such a design fantasy is suitable for design, but does not in any way fit in with the strict directions of minimalism.

    Shelves in country and provence styles

    Perhaps, the recreation of a rustic style in the kitchen is impossible without the use of such a decorative and functional element as open shelves. For this, it is preferable to use natural wood.

    To accentuate the style, use the shelves made of thick, aged wood. It is also better to choose the most natural color scheme:,, gray.

    A great solution would be to decorate individual open shelves with a floral pattern. Firstly. This will emphasize the stylistic orientation of the kitchen. Secondly, this solution will prevent the contents of the shelves from external contamination. Thirdly, it will allow you to experiment: in some cases, you can keep the curtains closed, in others, open. The main thing is to observe a sense of proportion. It is most optimal to decorate only a couple of shelves with curtains.

    Try to play with contrasts. The kitchen will look original and stylish with contrasting shelves, some of which are designed in light colors, and the other in dark ones. For example, the lower part of a headset with closed drawers can be kept in dark colors, and the upper part with open drawers can be in light colors, or vice versa. Another option is to use the white one located on the dark shelves. With this solution, you will refresh the kitchen.

    Contrast can also be achieved by placing dark shelves against a light background, or vice versa.

    Scandinavian style kitchen shelves

    For implementation, you should, first of all, use mainly natural materials. In the case of shelves, this should be wood. A stunning effect can be achieved by combining open and closed shelving. At the same time, it is better to store dishes and those items that you do not use so often on shelves with closed doors. And on open shelves it is better to put those things that you need in daily use.

    In addition, various decorative items can be placed on open shelves that emphasize the stylistic orientation of the room. For example, it can be:

    • small paintings and photographs with images of northern animals: deer, sheep, etc .;
    • decorative green plants;
    • and candles;
    • volumetric letters that form inscriptions;
    • cookbooks.

    All these elements highlight the Nordic character of the room.

    To recreate this style of interior, it is better not to clutter up the shelves. Place only the most essential items on them, which should always be at hand. Another option is to place only (candles, souvenirs, photo frames) on open structures. In this case, it is better to keep functional items in closed boxes.

    High-tech shelves

    If hi-tech style is closer to you, then instead of wooden shelves it is better to give preference to more modern materials, for example glass or iron. In this case, the shelves should only contain items that have a direct functional purpose - nothing superfluous.

    Instead of open glass shelves, you can use a real one. It is convenient to arrange dishes on it.

    If you use other materials for the shelves, then it is better to give preference to pure natural tones. Most will fit.

    Tip: Please note that in the high-tech style, nothing superfluous should be on the shelves. Therefore, it is advisable to think once more before deciding to install open shelves in such an interior - after all, you will constantly need to keep order.

    The design of the shelves requires strict adherence to the rules and canons.

    Shelf materials

    The choice of material depends on your preferences, the style of the room and the features of the kitchen layout.

    A wide variety of materials can be used for open shelving. Among them are such classic options as:

    • tree;
    • plastic;
    • .

    However, there are also more original solutions. So, shelves can be made of glass and even iron. These solutions are most suitable for kitchens designed in minimalism or high-tech styles.

    Tip: glass shelves look especially beautiful when. In this case, you will not only emphasize the beauty of the shelves, but also provide additional lighting in the room.

    Kitchen shelves: photos of unusual options for using kitchen shelves

    Open shelves in the kitchen can form a whole structure. You can even make them yourself. This is especially true for the shelves. After all, the simpler the shelves look, the better.

    Open shelves can be converted into plate storage. At the same time, for beauty and convenience, it should not be placed on top of one another, but beautifully laid out in a row with the front side forward. And so that the plates do not fall, this design provides for special cross beams. This arrangement of dishes is both convenient and beautiful.

    Open shelves can also be used as bottle holders. In this case, holes are made on the shelves, into which the bottles are placed upside down. In this case, they will be stored diagonally. Or, you can make special mini-boxes for storing bottles in an upright position.

    With such use of bottles, such a design will turn into a decorative element.

    How to make shelves with your own hands

    Kitchen shelves can be made with your own hands. For the manufacture of the simplest design, you can use ready-made processed boards, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Then these shelves can be attached to the wall, placing one above the other.

    If you want to approach the manufacture of shelves with all care, then first you need to decide on the style of the room. The design of the future structure will depend on this. Provide space for the shelf and take the necessary measurements. It is advisable to complete a product design. Please note that the color of the shelves must be identical to the shade, headset or wall.

    Decide what you intend to store on the shelf. Its dimensions should correspond to the things that you are going to place on it. For example, if you need shelves to store such small items as boxes with spices, bottles, decorative elements, then they can be placed almost anywhere. It could be the space above the table bar counter, under the top drawers, etc.

    It is better for novice craftsmen to opt for the manufacture of simple structures. So, the simplest for self-production is an open shelf, which has a rectangular shape.

    A great idea would be to replace the headset with the open shelves of the upper drawers. In this case, the structure can be made long and massive. In this case, the resulting shelves can take up space from wall to wall.

    Kitchen shelves are open or closed structures, most often hinged, but can be floor-standing and table-top.

    Most often, kitchen shelves are just one or two horizontal surfaces on which you can place all kinds of objects.

    Read below on how to make a versatile shelf from wood and other materials.

    Many people prefer to make kitchen shelves with their own hands. It is not difficult to knock together ordinary hinged shelves, it is more difficult to make corner shelves on your own, since it requires a more complex cutting of the material.

    It is imperative to think over the purpose of the design and the degree of load of the shelf. If you do not complete the design of the product, it may turn out that the shelf will not fit into the interior in color or size.

    Do not spoil the design of the kitchen just because you have the remains of chipboard or plywood at your disposal.

    The color of the shelf should match the color of the countertop, walls or doors of the set. The easiest way is to make a wooden kitchen shelf in the form of a rectangle, without doors.

    The dimensions of the open shelf must correspond to the items on it. So, for example, if it is supposed to put jars for spices on it, then the product should be small and elegant, without doors - so that the spices are always available.

    For pots and pans, use closed wooden kitchen shelves, suspended in an inconspicuous place.

    A kitchen set can always be supplemented with a shelf visible from all sides by placing it in the gap between two wall cabinets.

    Open shelves can completely replace the headset wall cabinets. This is allowed in some interior styles, such as country, loft and others.

    Rows of massive open shelves stacked on top of each other from wall to wall look much more interesting than standard cabinets.

    Of course, in this case, you will have to devote more time to cleaning, but on the other hand, you will always be sure that you have order in the kitchen, because all kitchen utensils are in plain sight.

    Hanging shelves in the kitchen are hung on fixtures that match the color and style of the shelf itself or wall decoration.

    For example, wooden shelves do not look good on metal brackets, so wood mounts are made for them.

    Hanging shelves in the kitchen help to reduce the cost of the kitchen set. Anyone who has come across the need to furnish an apartment with furniture knows that it takes more money to equip a kitchen than for other rooms.

    By ordering a corner shelf for the kitchen instead of a pencil case, you can protect your budget from unnecessary spending. The quality and functionality of the headset will not be affected.

    Placement in space

    Like any interior items, hanging shelves in the kitchen have their own advantages and disadvantages.

    Pros of open shelves:

    • make the kitchen set cheaper, since less material is required for their manufacture than for closed cabinets;
    • correspond to modern interior styles: Scandinavian, loft, high-tech, minimalism;
    • optical expand the room;
    • easy to assemble and dismantle;
    • allow you to keep essential items close at hand.

    Cons of wall mounted kitchen shelves:

    • kitchen utensils get dirty and covered with soot faster;
    • cleaning will take more time;
    • difficult to fit in some kitchen units.

    It is optimal to place open and closed structures in the kitchen at once.

    Having decided to make hanging shelves, you need to understand that they will have to allocate a special place in the kitchen.

    The main thing is that they are not over the stove. If you do not follow this rule, then the contents of the hinged shelves in the kitchen will always be splashed with oil.

    The best place for open shelves would be the work area, that is, the space next to the stove.

    Open structures look good as a smooth transition from work to dining area. In studios, open shelves and shelves can be used to create a gradual transition from kitchen to living room.

    If there is not enough free space in the room, then it is worth using corner hanging shelves. The floor-to-ceiling corner construction accommodates many items and takes up little space, making the kitchen much more spacious.

    Asymmetrical designs can become an unusual solution for the kitchen.

    They are suitable for semi-antique kitchens decorated in country and Provence styles and will not fit into modern interiors such as art deco, minimalism.

    For rooms in a rustic style, wall shelves are made of wood. Better if it is thick, aged. As for the color, they choose natural shades: brown, white, gray.

    To further enhance the impression, the floral curtains that cover the open shelves and bookcases.

    Moderation should be observed when choosing curtains. It is enough to close one or two shelves with them, and the room will look especially attractive.

    Kitchen shelves made of wood and plasterboard

    Open shelves in the kitchen are easiest to make from wood. It can be a versatile design that can be mounted on a wall, installed on a table or on the floor.

    You will need plywood or chipboard, loops for hanging shelves, self-tapping screws, screws, paint and varnish materials, veneer for decorating the ends (for chipboard shelves).

    Shelf manufacturing algorithm:

    1. draw a design drawing indicating all dimensions. To protect objects from falling, you can provide a border;
    2. the wood is cut into pieces of the required size, the ends are polished;
    3. all parts of the product are fastened to each other with self-tapping screws according to the drawing;
    4. attach hinges or brackets to the back panel;
    5. the wood is painted or varnished, the ends are glued with veneer;
    6. fixed on the wall.

    It is much more difficult to make a drywall structure. In this case, you have to carefully plan the load.

    If the shelf is made to accommodate heavy objects, for example, a TV or a music center, then you will have to reinforce the structure from the inside with profiles.

    To create decorative shelves, only the rack-mount profile is sufficient.

    Instructions for making a shelf from gypsum plasterboard:

    1. take measurements;
    2. make a drawing;
    3. calculate the amount of materials;
    4. make markings on the wall;
    5. a metal frame is collected from the profile;
    6. a do-it-yourself frame from a profile is hung on the wall;
    7. the shelves themselves are cut out of drywall;
    8. paste over drywall with washable material (oilcloth, etc.) or rub with putty and paint;
    9. insert the shelves into the metal frame on the wall.

    Tip: to fasten the profile to the wall, use a dowel-nails.

    The way the shelf is fixed depends on what material the wall is made of. If it is made of wood, then it is enough to nail the shelf with weave nails.

    In a brick or concrete wall, you will have to drill a hole with a puncher and insert an anchor (for heavy shelves) or a dowel into it.

    The most difficult thing is to fix the shelves on the walls made of plasterboard and foam concrete. These materials are not very hard.

    To fix something on such walls, use an anchor of a special design. Foam concrete cannot be drilled with a perforator, as the material crumbles heavily.

    The holes are made with a drill with a thin drill and immediately hammer in a dowel with a herringbone profile.

    For cellular materials, such as foam and aerated concrete, the industry produces special anchors - ordinary ones will not be able to fix in a porous material.

    Unusual ideas

    A luminous decorative shelf for the kitchen can become a highlight of the interior. To make such an unusual item, you will need a textured board: with holes from knots or deep cracks.

    You need to buy luminescent pigments and polyester resin in a specialty store or on Ali Express.

    The pigment and resin are mixed and poured into the cracks and holes of the board, sealed with tape from below.

    When pouring, the board must be in a strictly horizontal position - this must be checked with a level.

    It is important that the mixture, after filling the crack, does not spill over the surface of the tree, as in this case an inaccurate stain is obtained.

    When the resin is dry, remove the tape and sand the surface with sandpaper. Then the shelf is varnished on wood in several layers.

    Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has dried. In the dark, such a shelf will shine beautifully with neon light.

    Tip: any hinged open shelf can be easily converted into a cabinet by attaching furniture hinges to it and installing a door with a magnetic latch.

    Hanging floating shelves are very popular in Europe. They are called soaring because they seem to have no wall mounts.

    In fact, of course, such shelves have fasteners and, moreover, they are quite reliable. The mount consists of a 3x4 cm bar, horizontally fixed to the wall with dowels.

    Several strips are fixed on a horizontal bar in arbitrary places at an angle of 90 °.

    The system of bars is at the same time the fastening and the frame of the future shelf. It remains only to close it from all sides - top and bottom and at the ends - with any beautiful wood material, cover up the cracks and paint or varnish.

    As a result, you get flat shelves, as if glued with one end to the wall. Despite its ephemeral nature, such a structure can withstand a lot of weight.

    On it you can arrange pots with flowers, dishes and even stocks of cereals in beautiful containers.

    Speaking of flowers, the kitchen is the most suitable place for most indoor plants. This room is always warm and light, and the air is saturated with moisture.

    In addition, in the kitchen, many housewives grow aromatic plants in pots or drive green onions.

    A two-tiered plant shelf will help you place more pots on your windowsill. It is made because of a 2x4 cm wooden bar. The design of the shelf can be anything.
