And children's cosmetics. Often, future or already established parents also purchase a changing table. In addition, you can make it yourself.

What is the convenience of a changing table or chest of drawers

The purchase of a changing table is associated with certain costs. In addition, it will be necessary to allocate space for a new piece of furniture, which can be a problem if there is a shortage of living space. However, the diaper is very comfortable for the mother and ensures safety.

During the day, the child is changed many times - when changing a diaper, for a walk, from a walk, after eating to change soiled clothes, at night. If every time you swaddle your baby, bending over the sofa, your back can get very tired, which has already been placed under a heavy load during pregnancy and childbirth. When using the changing table, my mother's back is resting.

A baby changing table is safer for a baby than a sofa. Chest drawers or shelves included in the design of the swaddle, as a rule, stand out for baby cosmetics, wet wipes and other necessary devices, and they can be reached without leaving the baby and holding it with the other hand. At the same time, when the child learns to roll over and crawl, he risks falling off the couch if the mother moves away to take something for changing clothes or performing hygiene procedures.

In the first year of a baby's life, a pediatrician will visit him, and it will be convenient for the doctor to examine the baby on the changing table. Also, a table for can become a place for gymnastics and massage, which are a must for a child up to a year old. Doctors recommend performing these procedures on a hard and even surface.

Until what age does a child need a changing table?

Swaddling chests of drawers are intended for children from birth to a year. However, changing pads up to 70 cm in length will be uncomfortable for children after 6-9 months, and tables of 90 or 100 cm can also be used for a child older than a year if he does not change clothes on his own and walks in diapers.

What are changing tables

There are such types of changing tables as:

  • soft changing board
  • changer-shelf,
  • dresser with changing table,
  • hanging changer,
  • changing table-transformer.

A soft changing board is the simplest and most economical option. It can be put on an ordinary chest of drawers, a table, a sofa, transferred from place to place. As a rule, such a board is treated with waterproof material on top and has sides that ensure the safety of the child.

The changing rack consists of a wooden, plastic or metal frame, several drawers or shelves and a hard or soft changing board.

A children's chest of drawers with a changing pad is usually roomy and stable. It is equipped with a removable baby changing station and can last much longer than a year, but the chest of drawers requires a lot of space.

Hanging changing table for a newborn is attached to the wall and reclines as needed. It is ergonomic and takes up little space. To store children's things, pockets can be attached to it.

The transforming swaddle is difficult to manufacture on its own, but it can be turned into a children's desk for games and creativity of the baby.

What materials to choose for a changing table

Changing table materials should be safe and durable.

The frame can be made of wood, MDF or chipboard. For a soft changing board, MDF or chipboard, filler and a waterproof surface are also chosen. Fillers such as foam rubber, holofiber or a folded terry towel are used. From waterproof materials, both medical oilcloth and raincoat fabric are suitable. To lay the baby, they are covered with a natural diaper on top.

Varnishes and paints used to make a do-it-yourself swaddle must be certified, environmentally friendly. It is desirable that they have a mark on the admissibility of use in the children's room.

How to make a folding changing table

The wall-mounted folding changing table is almost invisible when assembled. You need to fix it on a strong wall, for quick installation. The changing pad must be able to support the weight of the child. To prevent spontaneous tilting and slamming, the lid is placed on gas lifts. On the inside of the structure, you can install several shelves that will give the table more strength and can be used to store children's things.

How to make a hanging changer

A hanging changing table, like a folding one, saves space. The whole structure consists of a changing board, supporting corners and side skirts from below. These parts can be cut out of chipboard, having previously determined the dimensions and made a drawing.

What you need for a portable changing table

The portable changing table can be placed on any surface. To make it, you will need chipboard sheets, a jigsaw, a sanding mesh, screws, paint and a wood primer.

For the base, select a board 80-90 cm long and 60 cm wide. The height of the side boards is 7-10 cm. After sanding, prime the boards and paint. Fasten the structure with screws.

Sewing a mattress on a changing table

To sew a mattress on a changing table with your own hands, you will need:

  • foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, holofiber or terry towels,
  • medical oilcloth or waterproof raincoat fabric,
  • sewing machine, thread and needles.

Cut out the soft base according to the size of the changing table, and the raincoat fabric with a margin of 0.5 cm on each side. Sheathe the filler with raincoat fabric, put two vertical lines on the mattress with a distance between them the width of the board. If the table has a headboard, it must also be done on the mattress.

A changing table or chest of drawers for newborns is a very convenient and necessary thing for a young family. Indeed, in most cases, the question of acquiring it is for couples who are preparing to become fathers and mothers for the first time. If the family is replenished with a second or third child, most likely, there is already a changing table in the house.

So, the main advantages of the changing table:

  • quick and comfortable changing of a child (the standard height of tables / chests of drawers is 85-105 cm, taking into account the sides, this allows you to “manipulate” the child without leaning towards him very much, as if you had to swaddle him on a bed or sofa, and this, in turn, , protects the mother's back from overload);
  • the presence of drawers allows you to store everything you need in one place - clothes, diapers, diapers, hygiene products (it is enough for mom to reach out her hand to open the desired drawer, and with the other hand to hold the child);
  • multifunctionality - on the table you can give the child a massage and even do gymnastics for newborns (all this is better done on a hard surface than on a sofa or bed) or conduct a medical examination;
  • compactness - a table without damage to the territory can be placed even in a one-room apartment.

Types of changing tables

Chest of drawers with a folding shelf

The expression “changing table” for a child most often means a compact chest of drawers, with a changing pad (changing surface), limited by sides on three sides, and three or four (and even five) drawers. The table can be equipped with wheels so that it is convenient to move it around the room if necessary. The surface of the swaddler can be increased by a folding shelf.

The dimensions of a standard changing table, which can be purchased at any furniture store, range from 90 × 80 × 50 cm (both more compact and larger models are possible).

Conventionally, all changing tables can be divided into two groups: full chests of drawers and compact portable designs. For example:

  • changing boards (a separate board with a soft surface that can be placed on a regular chest of drawers or placed on a crib);
  • changing rack - a design with a changing board and shelves, usually light and quite compact;
  • hanging changing boards (easily mounted to the wall at the right height, can be equipped with special pockets);
  • stationary changing tables or chests of drawers (the most complete, roomy and comfortable pieces of children's furniture).

Changing board Changing rack Hanging table Changing chest

The choice of model depends on the personal budget, free space in the apartment and individual personal preferences. If you buy a changing table in a store, check its dimensions in advance (they may be indicated on the website).

But you can assemble a changing table of the sizes and modifications you need with your own hands. It is not difficult, interesting and practical.

Tools and materials

To make your own baby changing table, you will need:

  • wood fiber boards (you can use chipboard or wood - if funds allow);
  • self-tapping screws / screws;
  • putty on wood;
  • saw or electric jigsaw, screwdriver;
  • furniture accessories.

Then, for the successful implementation of the planned project, you need to think over a manufacturing plan. You may well use ready-made drawings of changing tables, which you can easily find on our website. Look at the photos of the finished tables to better understand which version of baby changing furniture is right for you.

1 2 3 4

Ready-made schemes can be taken with you to the store of wood-based materials, so that you can cut blanks of the desired size (this will greatly facilitate your work).

Assembly order

Primarily. make a swaddle with sides (if suddenly the “production” of a chest of drawers with drawers is delayed, the swaddle can already be used). The standard size that you can focus on is about 80 cm long and 70 cm wide. Dimensions may vary, but the changing surface should not be made smaller, as the child should fit freely on it, and you will need to use the table for at least a year.

Then, guided by predetermined dimensions, you need to make a chest of drawers. The number of drawers must be at least two (for diapers and clothes). Optionally, you can equip the chest of drawers with wheels, making it more mobile.

The most important thing when making a table with your own hands is no need to rush. After all, a mistake or damage to materials can adversely affect your work. Be careful and attentive. And everything will definitely work out.

So, you will need a comfortable place to take care of your baby. Let's figure out how to make a changing table with your own hands.

To care for a child, one cabinet table will not be enough. In order for the baby to be comfortable during a diaper change, massage or exercises for the development of motor skills and reactions, the table will need to be equipped with a special mattress on a rigid basis.

Such mattresses require soft walls that perform protective functions so that the child is not injured on the corners of the frame structure.

In the article we will also talk about how to sew a changing mat with sides for a convenient location during a diaper change.

What is needed to make

To begin with, we should decide which stages of the work we will deal with ourselves, and which ones we can entrust to the masters. For example, in special woodworking workshops, you can not only purchase material for the base, but also order cutting parts according to ready-made drawings.

If you decide to save money and do all the work yourself, then you will need the following:

  • electric jigsaw for cutting parts from the plate;
  • grinding material: fine mesh sandpaper or grinding wheel;
  • wood screws or self-tapping screws (they have a more pronounced carving);
  • special hypoallergenic paint and wood primer.

As a material for the base, it is customary to choose chipboard or MDF boards, which are used for the manufacture of cabinet furniture. Although natural wood is aesthetically attractive, it is still an expensive and heavy material, so it is better to pay attention to more budget panels.

Depending on the changing table design you choose, you may also need connectors, rails, handles, padded legs and ties. In this article, we will look at the main types of tables so that you can choose the most suitable option based on your preferences and family budget.

Preparation of materials and tools

As mentioned earlier, it is better to entrust the cutting of parts in furniture workshops, in addition to ordering also pasting with a special protective edge. So you protect the material from chips and mechanical damage.

Did you know?The first mass public relations campaign to install changing tables in public places was launched in 2015 by famous Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher. His informational post on Facebook about the problem of the lack of suitable places to care for a child in a short time gained over 200,000 likes and was shared 14,000 times on the walls of other users of the social network.

The width of ready-made changing pads rarely exceeds 60 cm, the height of the protective sides is no more than 10 cm.

If you decide to leave the sawing of the parts to yourself, then for accurate work you will need an electric jigsaw, which allows you to even cut along a curved line with a radius of 15 mm or more. It should be borne in mind that household electric jigsaws are able to work with material no more than 25 mm thick, so this is another plus in the direction of chipboard or MDF boards, which do not differ in great thickness.

For grinding the material after cutting, it is better to use emery or grinding wheels with varying degrees of coating grain:

  • for rough work - grit 100 or 120;
  • for finishing work - grit 160, 220 or 240.

Rounding of surfaces to be machined can also be done with sandpaper, while first putting it on a bar and holding it at an angle of 45 °.

Important! Self-tapping screws must be selected for wood, not metal. Wood screws have a more pronounced thread for tight screwing into wood. In addition to self-tapping screws, it is recommended to purchase decorative plastic plugs of approximately the same color as the material for the case.

Construction detail

Depending on the budget and preferences, it is better to choose the best model for yourself, based on your requests:

  • protozoan changing board is portable. It can be laid on a bed, chest of drawers or any stable flat surface;

  • changer-shelf. It is a frame where a swaddling board is placed on top, and one or more drawers for various useful small things: diapers, powder, napkins and other things;

  • chest of drawers. It can be made as a separate piece of furniture or as an extension to an existing chest of drawers. The most convenient option, despite the large dimensions;

  • suspension or wall-mounted changer , which is attached to the wall and recline if necessary. A fairly convenient product that does not take up much space, which is especially important for small apartments.

Regardless of the design chosen, you will need a rigid base, filler material and a moisture-resistant coating that will not absorb moisture and odors. The changing mat should be firm enough as the baby will need a hard surface to roll over or sit up on. Also, changing pads are often used as a convenient place to massage and charge the baby, which also requires a solid foundation.

Fasteners and accessories

If you decide to make a full chest of drawers for storage, then you will need to purchase drawer guides and furniture handles for them. If the swaddling bed provides a folding base, then gas lift lifting mechanisms, which are often used for the production of box beds, will come in handy. They provide a soft lowering of the surfaces without the risk of a loud blow and, as a result, frightening the child.

Furniture corners allow you to securely fasten partitions for overall structural rigidity.

General design of the changing table: dimensions and diagram

It is not difficult to make a changing table chest of drawers with your own hands. There are drawings and diagrams on the Internet, thanks to which the preparation process is minimized. It is often enough to download a ready-made cutting drawing and visit with it any furniture workshop where you can purchase a finished board and cut out the details on the spot.

When choosing sizes, take into account the features of the chest of drawers and the height of the mother of the child, since most often she will have to deal with swaddling. At the time of work, it should stand evenly and not bend over the countertop, so you need to adjust the height of the structure for ease of use.

Making blanks for the table

The classic scheme of such a dresser table provides for a height of no more than a meter, a width of about 50 cm and a length of 80 cm. The upper changing shelf is folding. In such a table there are three large drawers for linen and personal items, on top there is one row for storing small items for swaddling: powder, sanitary napkins, new diapers or diapers.

For consideration, let's take a chest of drawers project with a width of 400 mm, a height of 960, a length of 800 mm. The height of each large drawer is 204 mm, the height of the small drawer is 130 mm.

Did you know? In Macy's supermarkets, popular in the USA, changing tables for common use are even placed in the men's restrooms. This is done so that young fathers can not interrupt shopping and change their child's diapers right in the store.

We will need:

  • facades of large boxes 183x764 mm - 3 pcs.;
  • facades of small boxes 183x371 mm - 2 pcs.;
  • walls of large boxes (front and rear) 710x150 mm - 6 pcs.;
  • walls of small boxes (front and rear) 710x150 mm - 4 pcs.;
  • sidewalls of boxes 450x150 mm - 10 pcs.;
  • folding shelf for changing 322x765 mm - 1 pc.;
  • horizontal partition between small boxes 187x500 mm - 1 pc.;
  • shelves and chest of drawers 768x500 mm - 3 pcs.;
  • plinth 768x100 mm - 1 pc.;
  • rear side 768x175 mm - 1 pc.
For drawers and the back wall of the chest of drawers, you will need hardboard blanks:
  • the bottom of small boxes 347x450 mm - 2 pcs.;
  • the bottom of large boxes 740x450 mm - 3 pcs.;
  • back wall of chest of drawers 795x795 mm - 1 pc.

Grooving

The groove is a recess into which the protruding part of another object is inserted when connected. In our design, the grooves will be made in the sidewalls and the back wall, so that later the ends of the tabletop can be inserted into them.

Important! Some craftsmen advise using two or more blades inserted into one hacksaw to form grooves.

Thus, a quick way to make grooves will be realized without spending additional time on processing. To select them, a simple chisel or a convenient end mill for a grinder is used. It is better to indent from the lower edges at a height of 20 mm, depth - 7 mm, width for a convenient entry of the end of the tabletop - 8 mm.

Formation of places for fastenings

To attach to the partition, you need furniture corners measuring 20x20 mm, which are attached inside the structure to the upper partition.

In order for there to be a gap under the table for air access and easier cleaning, you need to attach four plastic or metal legs to the structure. The recommended height of the legs is 50 mm, in case of a misalignment in the height of the floor or the dresser itself, it is allowed to use telescopic plastic legs that can be unscrewed to the required height.

The mounts themselves do not require special preliminary preparation work. As a stencil for rounding corners, you can use any rounded lid or small saucer.

Changing table assembly

If you have prepared parts and the necessary tools, the assembly process is simple:

  • we assemble boxes from walls, bases and facades;
  • install guides (with a wheel to the back wall) on the inner walls of the chest of drawers;
  • we connect the sides of the chest of drawers to each other;
  • install the back wall of the chest of drawers on the frame;
  • mount the folding cover for swaddling.
The structure is ready. Next, we mount the legs, handles on the facades of the drawers - and a comfortable changing place for our little one is already waiting for its owner.

Did you know? The most expensive mass-produced baby changing table costs over $7,500. At the same time, it does not include a mattress for a child.

As you can see, it’s not difficult to make a folding baby changing table with your own hands, but you need to strictly follow the process of marking and mounting parts. It is better to use ready-made drawings and order cutting parts in specialized workshops. As a result, you will still get tangible savings compared to the cost of the finished product in a furniture store.

Dresser changing table

A changing table on a chest of drawers is a great choice for practicality. In this case, it is not necessary to assemble or order a new chest of drawers. It is quite possible to make a changing board with a mount on a chest of drawers with your own hands.

In this case, it is enough to order a cutting of parts from a chipboard or MDF board of the same color scheme as the chest of drawers on which the changing table is planned to be installed. We will need a base, sides and a folding shelf, also with sides. The parts are fastened together with furniture glue; special fasteners are used for the folding base.

If it is necessary to firmly fix the changing table on the lid of the dresser, you can use "chops" - wooden bushings inserted into drilled holes of small depth (up to 10 mm) in the lid of the chest of drawers and the side walls of the changer.

How to make a folding wall changing table

If you want to make a wall-mounted changing table with your own hands, you need to take into account the strength of the surface on which it will be mounted. This type of tables is convenient for small rooms where you need to achieve space savings.

Important! A similar design must be installed on concrete or brick walls. Drywall is characterized by low strength and low resistance to stress, so it is impossible to attach a swaddler to it.

As a mechanism for lowering the working surface, it is appropriate to use gas lifts, popular in furniture stores, which provide a smooth motion for lowering the lid and the possibility of its reliable fixation both in the raised and lowered form.

An example of such a table:

  • width - 950 mm;
  • depth - 660 mm;
  • height of sides - 100 mm.
We will need one base, three sides and a frame on which lifting mechanisms will be fixed. For a strong connection of parts to each other, you can use furniture glue and self-tapping screws.

Additionally, the bottom of the folding table can be equipped with a number of shelves for small items or you can attach a soft organizer case, in which it is convenient to place baby care products.

Did you know?The first wall table was invented by pharmacist Jeff Hilger in 1984. The novelty was called "Koala Bear Kare Baby Changing Station" and closer to the beginning of the 90s began to be actively installed in homes and public places.

How to make a portable changing table

A crib changing table is the easiest and most convenient type of changing pad that you can make yourself. In fact, this is not even a table, but a board with installed sides and a mattress that can be placed on a bed or other vertical surface.

It has only four parts: the bottom, the back wall and two sidewalls. The back wall must be made according to the height of the sidewalls and often acts as an additional stiffener.

From pluses such a design can be distinguished as follows:

  • simplicity and low weight of the design;
  • mobility. The board can be placed on any flat surface;
  • cheapness.

From cons:

  • lack of additional compartments for accessories for child care;
  • there is no possibility of rigid fixing on the surface (it can “crawl” on a smooth table top).

It is better to choose a board for the base with a size of 900x600 mm, the height of the sides is 100 mm. The parts are fastened with glue and self-tapping screws, or screws, depending on preference.

Important! Remember that all treated surfaces must be “sanded” and treated with a special varnish or hypoallergenic paint. Latex-based "rubber" paints are well suited, which are distinguished by good mechanical strength and resistance to damage.

Even better, wrap the finished structure with soft fabric upholstery, for which you can make removable covers. As a result, the covers can be removed and washed every week to prevent dirt from accumulating on them.

Currently, it is changing boards that are most often used in young families due to their cheapness, simplicity and versatility.

How to make a mattress for a hanging table with your own hands

Previously, various types of structures and features of their assembly were considered. But of course, that's not all. For the convenience of the child, any type of changing table should be equipped with a special hard mattress on which the little one will lie. It is easy to sew a similar mattress for changing on a chest of drawers or a table-board with your own hands, while spending a small amount of time.

Depending on the size of the base of the changer, the size of the mattress may vary. It must match the size of the base-board of the swaddler. You can find many ready-made drawings on the Internet, since changing tables are made in standard standard sizes: up to 70 cm in length for newborns or up to a meter in length for children under the age of one and a half years.

Let's take a look at what it takes to sew a mattress on a changing chest with your own hands. First of all - patterns. You should also decide on the filler and upholstery material.

We will need:

  • linen fabric of a single color for stuffing - 200x100 cm;
  • white cotton fabric with a bright pattern for the outer layer - 120x100 cm;
  • filler made of synthetic winterizer or polypropylene - 120x100 cm;
  • sewing machine for stitching fabric.

The process of sewing a mattress can be divided into the following steps:

  • we take two pieces of fabric for lining, 65x75 cm in size;
  • stuffing material is laid between them;
  • to fasten the stuffing, you need to sew pieces of fabric for lining together;
  • fabric for the outer layer is laid on top. The base is stitched several times to hold the layers together.

Important! Before sewing, you should pre-wash the fabric intended for the base in order to achieve shrinkage.

After making the base of the mattress, soft sides are made in the same way, designed to protect the child from injury on the corners:

  • the size of the fabric for the bumpers is determined from the size of the bumpers themselves, plus 2 centimeters of fabric on all sides;
  • stuffing material is laid between the layers of fabric, after which the pieces of fabric are stitched together;
  • ready-made soft sides are attached to the base of the mattress, having received a one-piece structure.

As you can see, the work is simple, but it requires accuracy and patience.

Assembling a changing table at home

In conclusion, we will give some practical tips for assembling a changing table at home on your own:

  • it is better to start the initial preparation by finding a suitable finished drawing. If you do not have a specialized engineering education, then entrust the calculations to those who did it before you;
  • it is better to entrust the cutting of material to furniture makers who have the necessary qualifications and professional tools;
  • all corners of the parts must be rounded with a jigsaw and then sanded with sandpaper;
  • it is better to glue the side part of the parts with a special edge for better aesthetic appearance of the product and the safety of the child;
  • if possible, sew removable covers for fabric upholstery;
  • the material for the outer upholstery of the mattress is better to choose either natural or synthetic, but hypoallergenic and moisture resistant;
  • if, for some reason, assembly and disassembly of the finished structure is provided, then it is better to use screws and a coupler for fastening. For assembly “for centuries”, wood screws and furniture glue are better suited;
  • it is better to purchase high-quality fasteners that can withstand the weight of the child.

Did you know?For the first time, changing tables in their modern form appeared in the early 90s in women's toilets. Later, thanks to the efforts of lobbyists for the Fair Education movement, such tables began to be placed in rest rooms, parks and public toilets. And both in men's and women's.

Depending on the selected model of the table, you will need a different tool for assembly. Tightening self-tapping screws or screws is best done with a screwdriver or a reversible ratchet screwdriver. After twisting, close all the caps with special overlays, which can be freely purchased at a small hardware store.

So that the screws do not protrude with hats outside the part, we recommend that you first scroll a small recess for the hat with a drill. The diameter of the drill must correspond to the diameter of the head of the self-tapping screw, the depth of the recess is 2 mm.

It is better to grind parts made of wood or chipboard in a non-residential area in order to protect the upholstery of furniture from particles settling on it during processing. At home, this is a bathroom or a balcony.

If you plan to use a suspended structure to save space, then do not save on high-quality fasteners and a lifting mechanism. a child is not a task that can be entrusted to a pair of plastic dowels 6x40 mm. If possible, install strong anchors in the wall that can support even the considerable weight of the changer.
For the base of the mattress, you can use tourist mattresses, produced in the form of rectangles fastened together. The material in them has a sufficient degree of rigidity, and the cover is waterproof and does not absorb odors.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in such work due to the abundance of material that can be found on the net. Assembling such a table with your own hands will not only be pleasant, but will also save the family budget. The main thing is to correctly calculate your strengths and skills in order to get a product that is not inferior in quality to factory products, but, unlike them, is charged with warmth.

The appearance of a baby in the family is a happy and joyful event, however, associated with endless worries and requiring thorough preparation. Many parents already purchase everything necessary for a newborn in advance: a stroller, a crib, clothes, forgetting about such a necessary thing as a changing table.

It would seem that there is no need for it, because you can swaddle a child anywhere, and there is no need to spend extra money. This is only partly true: large financial investments are really not needed if you know how to make a changing table with your own hands.

Benefits of using changing tables

It is necessary to change clothes of an infant very often - at least five to seven times a day. Not every mother can do this, bending over the sofa - often after childbirth there are temporary problems with the back, when the load on the spine is undesirable. A specially equipped table in this case is a real salvation, its height (80-100 cm) allows you to avoid these overloads.

Floor models of baby changing tables include not only a changing pad, but also a number of drawers or shelves to accommodate all the things necessary for this process: diapers, diapers, undershirts and hygiene products.

Having these items at arm's length is not only convenient, but also advisable from the point of view of the baby's safety - he will not have to be left unattended while the necessary things are being collected around the house.

Additional security, in contrast to a conventional table, is provided by the sides of the swaddle, passing along its three sides and preventing the child from accidentally falling.

Convenience is the main criterion for almost any furniture, and the changing table fully corresponds to it. It is compact (you can choose a model that matches the size of the room) and multifunctional, very convenient for therapeutic or preventive gymnastics and massage.

You can use this design for quite a long time (up to a year), and then, if desired, convert it into a regular chest of drawers.

Types of changing tables

Modern designs of changing devices are not limited to the standard classic chest of drawers with three sides, but even this model is found in different forms. For example, there may be a larger number of sides or a changing pad extended due to the unfolding surface.

To date, not only floor tables, but also hanging and portable tables are on sale.

Suspension

The table is attached to a vertical surface and due to this does not take up much space. Like any other changing device, it is equipped with sides and a soft surface. Below there are pockets for storing diapers and other small things.

When installing a wall-mounted changing table, special attention should be paid to the reliability of the fasteners.

hinged

This is a kind of hanging table, but with the ability to remove it by connecting it to the wall panel due to a mechanism equipped with gas lifts (to avoid accidental collapse or, conversely, opening).

The shelves included in the design make it even more convenient and functional. This is a very compact option, suitable not only for the nursery, but even for the bathroom.

For this model, as well as for the suspended one, the very surface to which the structure is attached is of great importance - it must be durable and withstand the weight of the child, therefore such a table is not recommended for installation on plasterboard partitions.

Portable

It is a board with sides and a soft surface, with fastenings for stability. This option is very convenient for small apartments: the changing pad is securely fixed on the backs of the crib without taking up space, and is also useful if you need to go on a trip.

In addition, this is the easiest and easiest type of swaddling device for self-manufacturing.

Dresser

This is a classic model with drawers and a built-in or removable padded changing board with sides. Of all the above, it is the most capacious design, but also the most voluminous, so even compact models of chests of drawers are not very suitable for small spaces.

Other types of structures

The bookcase is a design with open shelves. Due to the absence of closed drawers, it is lighter than a chest of drawers and does not visually clutter up the space.

The folding changing table allows the layout of the structure. This can be attributed to both the advantages of this model and the disadvantages: in case of uselessness, it is removed and does not take up space, but at the same time, it is not very convenient to constantly disassemble and assemble it.

A transformer is a model that combines several furniture options. For example, it can be transformed after the child grows up into a desk or be combined with a crib.

The last version of the model is the most difficult for self-production. In the case of choosing this design, it is best to give preference to finished products or order it from specialists.

What material to make

When choosing a material of manufacture, the main criterion is safety, so it must be environmentally friendly, not containing any harmful or toxic impurities. The more natural the material, the better.

The most preferable is natural wood, but not every budget can withstand such a load. Therefore, you can use substitutes such as chipboard (chipboard) or MDF (medium density fibreboard) - they will cost much less, and are quite up to standard in terms of safety and reliability.

In no case should paint with a toxic composition or an unpleasant odor be used, and the material for the changing board, including the filler, should not cause an allergic reaction.

It is best to make a soft surface from holofiber (it is hypoallergenic) and natural fabric (for the top layer).

What to consider before making a table

No need to rush and start assembling the chosen design as soon as such an idea appeared. In order to avoid unpleasant accidents and subsequent alteration, it is worth considering some points before proceeding directly to manufacturing.

  1. The table must be reliable and stable. Structural strength is one of the primary tasks facing the manufacturer. In the case of choosing a suspended model, this applies, first of all, to the mounting mechanism.
  2. The dimensions of the table should contribute to the comfortable position of the child when swaddling. With self-production, you can choose the desired height of the structure and width, but it is better to make the depth standard or a little more, but not less than 60 cm, since the baby can quickly “outgrow” the swaddle.
  3. The surface of the table is recommended to be made soft, but at the same time, with a fairly rigid base. If you plan to sew the mattress yourself, then you need to lay an oilcloth between the outer fabric and the filler, or, even better, take a water-repellent fabric.

And, of course, do not forget about the safety of all materials used, as well as reducing the risk of injury to the structure. For this, sharp corners are polished, surfaces are smoothed, fasteners are sunk, and a minimum of fittings is used.

How to make a table-chest of drawers with your own hands

Making a chest of drawers on your own is not a quick and rather laborious process: for its high-quality implementation, you need to have some carpentry skills.

The easiest way is to attach a swaddling board with sides to an ordinary ready-made chest of drawers and provide it with a mattress. But if you want to build a structure from scratch, you will need an additional set of tools and materials.

In addition to the selected lumber (wood, chipboard or MDF), appropriate carpentry tools and additional materials will be required, the presence and quantity of which directly depends on the appearance of the planned structure.

You will definitely need:

  • electric jigsaw or saw for cutting blanks;
  • sandpaper;
  • Sander;
  • screwdriver, screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws or screws;
  • primer for wood;
  • tape measure, construction rectangle, pencil;
  • furniture corners;
  • confirmations;
  • guides for drawers (two pieces for each);
  • accessories.

Preparation of blanks

First you need to make a drawing of the future chest of drawers, or choose and print from the Internet the model that best suits your personal preferences. The model presented below is a classic one - it is a chest of drawers with drawers and an extended changing shelf.

Next, the material is cut according to the dimensions specified in the drawing (if necessary, they can be corrected) and the corners are rounded. For this process, it is best to use an electric jigsaw, not a saw, as it will not work accurately to cut rounded lines.

After cutting, the following details should be obtained:

  • sides 798 x 460 cm - 2 pcs;
  • back side 732 x 848 cm - 1 piece;
  • the bottom of the boxes 790 x 448 - 4 pcs;
  • dresser bottom 818 x 460 - 1 pc;
  • top shelf 850 x 480 - 1 pc;
  • additional shelf 850 x 283 - 1 piece;
  • facades 177 x 846 - 4 pcs;
  • side panels of drawers 120 x 418 - 8 pcs;
  • rear panels of drawers 120 x 818 - 4 pcs;
  • main sides 80 x 414 - 2 pcs;
  • folding sides 79 x 394 - 2 pcs;
  • rear side 243 x 850 - 1 pc.

If there is an opportunity and desire, then the back panel and drawers can be made of hardboard.

Now you need to properly grind the workpiece. To do this, you will first need a coarse-grained sandpaper or grinding wheel, and for finishing - a finer one.

Grooving

Grooves for inserting one blank into another must be made in the side parts and in the back of the chest of drawers - the future tabletop will become them. To form them, you will need a jigsaw or a hacksaw for wood and a chisel.

The dimensions of the groove are as follows: the width of the entrance is 1-2 mm more than the thickness of the board, and the depth is about 7-8 mm. The resulting grooves need to be sanded or sanded.

Places for fastenings

On the blanks you need to mark the places where the fasteners will be located.

Places for the following structural elements should be marked:

  • furniture corners - 2 pcs - they will attach the upper shelf to the sidewalls;
  • intersection couplers - 2 pieces - fastening of an additional shelf;
  • guides for drawers - 8 pcs;
  • confirmations - other places of fixation.

All markup must be done as accurately as possible. The marked attachment points on the sides and sides of the future product should “mirror” each other, otherwise, distortions are inevitable in the finished chest of drawers.

After completing the markup and carefully re-checking all measurements, you can proceed to drilling holes. In the sides of the base and the additional shelf for intersectional screeds (rotary axis), they are made through, as well as in the side planes for confirmations.

At the ends of the shelves, the holes are deepened by 4-6 cm, their diameter and depth must correspond to the dimensions of the fasteners. For guides, it is not necessary to additionally drill the markings - with the help of self-tapping screws, they are immediately attached along the intended line.

Assembling a dresser table

If all the previous steps were completed independently, then the assembly of the structure will seem relatively easy.

Sequencing:

  1. Install guides on the inner surface of the sides.
  2. Collect boxes.
  3. Install the bottom shelf (bottom of the dresser).
  4. Fix the sides on the top shelf with confirmations.
  5. Connect the sides to the top shelf.
  6. Attach the back panel to the frame.
  7. Assemble the additional shelf and fix it on the base with a tie.
  8. Install accessories.

If necessary, legs (metal or plastic) can be attached to the structure for free air circulation under the chest of drawers or wheels for mobility. Finishing with paint or varnish - optional. If the chest of drawers was assembled from wood, before applying the paint, it is imperative to sand the product and walk on the surface with a primer.

Making tables of other types

If the room does not allow you to install a changing chest, you can consider the process of manufacturing more compact models.

Folding wall

It perfectly saves space in the room, but you must make sure that the partition on which the structure will be attached is strong - it is desirable that it be brick or concrete.

In addition to standard materials and fasteners, this model will require gas lifts that are installed on the product to prevent spontaneous "collapse".

For convenience, several shelves can be made in the stationary part of the table. In addition to the necessary function of storing things, they will also serve as an additional latch, since they increase the strength of the structure.

Assembly instructions:

  1. Cut blanks according to the drawing, make rounding of corners, process with a grinder.
  2. Make markings for fasteners, drill the necessary holes.
  3. Assemble the frame with shelves using furniture corners or confirmations (any reliable fasteners).
  4. Connect the frame to the back panel.
  5. Fix the sides on the changer.
  6. Using furniture hinges, connect the frame and cover.
  7. Install gas lifts.

It remains only to fix the structure on the surface with a reliable mount. It is desirable that it be designed for a weight of at least 20 kg.

Portable

Even those who do not understand anything in carpentry can cope with the manufacture of such a changing device. The design is a board with restrictive sides (two or three) and a mattress. The size of the board is approximately 60 x 95 cm and the planks are 6-10 cm high.

Description of the assembly process:

  1. Cut out blanks: base, side planks and headboard plank (you can do without it).
  2. Sand the surface and sharp corners.
  3. Connect the sides to the base with screws or self-tapping screws.

If there is a desire and opportunity, then a mounting mechanism can be installed on the base from below or grooves can be cut out (for reliable fastening, for example, on the crossbars of a crib).

Often, such a design is covered with fabric instead of painting - this is quite convenient, especially if you sew a removable cover. In addition, due to the fabric, the table will slide less on a flat surface.

The mattress can be either removable or fixed on the surface of the changing pad.

decoration

The main ways to decorate changing tables are to cover them with paint and varnish. The color of the coating is chosen either to match the furniture, or made accent.

The same principle applies here as in the case of any other furniture: a dark color hides the dimensions, but makes the room heavier, and light shades do the opposite.

Decorating with applications is very popular (you can choose the motif and technique at your discretion), as well as with fabric. Most often, it is selected to match the wallpaper or furniture upholstery.

How to sew a mattress for a changer

Such a mattress is useful not only for those who have a special device for swaddling. It can also be placed on a simple table.

Tailoring a mattress is not difficult, but the following points must be taken into account:

  • you need to choose a fabric with the most natural composition;
  • the filler must be from materials that do not cause allergies;
  • the cut must be made from a single piece of fabric so that there are no seams at the points of contact with the skin of the baby.

The fabric for the mattress is better to choose water-repellent. You can additionally sew a cover with a zipper (for ease of washing) and lay inside with oilcloth. Foam rubber or holofiber is perfect as a filler.

Necessary tools and materials

You will need:

  • main fabric and for lining (1.5-2 m each);
  • filler (1.5 m);
  • centimeter, scissors;
  • threads, pins, needles;
  • sewing machine.

You will also need an iron to steam the fabric and iron the seams.

Mattress sewing instructions

After the fabric is selected and the dimensions of the mattress are calculated, you can proceed directly to cutting and sewing the product.

Procedure:

  1. Cut out blanks for the mattress and bumpers from the main fabric, lining and filler, not forgetting about the allowances for seams along the edges of the bumpers.
  2. Lay the filler between the two parts of the lining and stitch the resulting “sandwich” several times.
  3. Sew parts from the main fabric on three sides to make a “pillowcase”, turn the blank out and insert a “sandwich” into it.
  4. Fold the raw edge inward and sew. Sew along the perimeter.
  5. Bend the side part along (in length) in half to the wrong side, stitch the side seams and part of the longitudinal one, leaving in the middle of it an unsewn gap about 15-20 cm wide. Process the seams and turn out.
  6. Fill the side with filler, sew up the hole.
  7. Sew the side to the base of the mattress manually so that the seam runs from below and does not come into contact with the baby's skin.

The mattress can be decorated with ribbons, applications or soft toys. The choice of design is at your own discretion. The main thing is that the decor should not be traumatic.

In the process of making a table yourself, you need to remember some important points.

  • it is necessary to correctly calculate the design parameters and make a competent drawing;
  • if a ready-made scheme is taken as the basis, then it is necessary to strictly adhere to the indicated dimensions when cutting out parts;
  • if there is no confidence in your abilities, then it is better to entrust the cut to professionals;
  • the design should not be traumatic, so all sharp corners require rounding and grinding;
  • grinding work should not be done at home, since furniture upholstery can be damaged from flying dust and small particles of wood - non-residential premises are better suited for this purpose;
  • the use of toxic paint and varnish should be avoided;
  • fastening with screws and a screed will enable the structure to be "collapsible";
  • do not forget about the reliability and strength of the fastening mechanisms in the manufacture and installation of a wall-mounted changer;
  • it is better to close all external caps of self-tapping screws or screws with special plastic overlays;
  • it is recommended to make a changing mattress moderately hard with a soft surface;
  • for sewing a mattress, it is preferable to choose natural fabrics, hypoallergenic and moisture resistant;
  • A cover sewn to be put on the mattress will facilitate the process of washing and steaming.

To date, the stores offer a huge selection of various models of changing pads. However, a do-it-yourself table will not only cost much less than a purchased one, but will also become an exclusive creation with a piece of soul invested in it.

Changing table video

The video offers an overview of a DIY changing table model.

Did any of the parents count how many times a day a baby has to change sliders and diapers? Any mother will say that to carry out these manipulations, you need a convenient and safe device where the baby can be laid without fear that he will fall. Therefore, today the attention of craftsmen is offered a changing table with their own hands.

We will make such a changing table for the baby

In modern models, the changing pad is usually part of a chest of drawers or cabinets. Another popular solution is a separate changing station in the form of a wooden base with sides, which can be mounted on a crib or bedside table. When the need for it disappears, the table is dismantled. Consider the manufacture of such a mobile version in more detail.

First stage

We choose the basis for our table. Let's say it will be a bedside table of a convenient height so that mom does not have to bend over three deaths. The do-it-yourself changing table is attached to the base on four metal corners in such a way that the bedside table itself does not need to be drilled.

The design of the product is as follows:

  1. The table top measures 805x786 mm and is fixed into the grooves of the sidewalls and the back wall.
  2. Rear wall 772x100 mm.
  3. 2 side walls 820x100 mm.
  4. Front bar 816x35 mm.
  5. Screed under the bottom of the tabletop.
  6. Two legs 600x40 mm, attached to the side walls.

Scheme of a changer mounted on a bedside table

In the course of work, size adjustments will be required, since at home the exact millimeter can rarely be maintained. But this is not so important, the main thing here is the strength of the joints.

To make a flute we need:

  • Plywood sheet 805x786x8 mm.
  • Pine board 2500x100x22 mm.
  • Bar 600x40x20 mm - 2 pcs.
  • Wooden pins 8x30 or 8x40.
  • Metal corners - 4 pcs.
  • Joiner's glue.
  • Medical oilcloth with a fabric base.
  • Foam rubber 2 cm thick.
  • Dye.

The dimensions of the finished table in our case are 835x816 mm with a side height of 100 mm. The height of the legs is 40 mm. The parameters are given for clarity, because the swaddler is adjusted to the top cover of a particular bedside table. To work, you will need tools:

  • Hacksaw.
  • A hammer.
  • Drill.
  • Clamps.
  • End mill or chisel for selecting grooves.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Roulette, ruler, pencil.

Having prepared everything you need, we proceed to the manufacture of a changing table with our own hands.

Cutting wood and preparing parts

We divide the work on cutting and drilling into several successive steps:

Step 1. We mark and cut out the workpiece material according to the indicated dimensions. We round the corners of the side walls using the lid of a teapot or a small saucepan as a stencil. We grind all cuts with sandpaper.

Scheme of the left side wall (the right one is mirrored).

Step 2. Stepping back from the bottom edges by 20 mm, we select the grooves under the countertop in the side and back walls. The depth of the grooves is 7 mm, the width is just over 8 mm, so that the end of the plywood worktop enters.

Plywood countertop

Back wall

Step 3. In order for the front bar to properly fall into place, we step back on both sides of it by 22 mm (sidewall thickness) and make cuts with a depth of 7 mm. We remove the sawn fragments with a chisel.

Scheme of the left edge of the front bar

Also in the front bar, you need to select a support for the countertop with a cutter. In fact, it is necessary to remove with a cutter a part of 15x7 mm along the entire length of the workpiece. Next, we make a rounding. It can be made with a shaped cutter with a bearing, or simply cut with a knife and cleaned with sandpaper.

Step 4. In the side walls, we drill the following non-through (leave 3-4 mm) holes:

  • 4 sockets for attaching legs,
  • 3 holes for connection to the rear wall,
  • and one from the end for the front bar.

Step 5. We make reciprocal holes in the back wall, legs and front bar. Our pins are 30-40 mm long. The depth of these holes is made 1-2 mm more than the length of the dowel, minus the depth of the corresponding nest of the adjacent part, so that the parts can be completely joined for sure.

Docking the left side and rear walls, as well as inserting the tabletop

Step 6. We make nests in the ends of the screeds and in the sides of the legs.

The screed gives rigidity to the structure

Changer assembly

The most difficult steps before making a changing table have been completed. We assemble the finished parts in the following order:

  • We connect the side walls and legs. To do this, add a small amount of glue to the holes, insert the dowels into the sidewall, seat them with light taps of the hammer. The free ends of the pins are inserted into the sockets of the legs. We again bring them with a hammer, squeeze them with clamps and leave to dry until the glue has completely set.
  • We add glue to the entire length of the groove of the back wall, insert the countertop into it.
  • We glue the nests at the ends of the back wall and the screed with glue. We hammer pins into these nests.
  • We introduce glue into the grooves and the remaining sockets of the side walls, as well as into the sockets of both legs under the screed insert.
  • We connect the back wall with the right sidewall, at the same time directing the end of the countertop into the groove on the right wall. We articulate the screed with the right leg.
  • In the same way, we connect the resulting structure with the left sidewall.
  • We glue the holes in the front bar and in the front ends of the sidewalls. We attach the front bar with the help of dowels. We tighten the entire structure with clamps.

Attaching the changing table to the nightstand

After drying the finished changing pad, we glue the foam rubber to the tabletop and to the side walls, cutting it out exactly in size. We upholster the table with soft oilcloth. We screw the metal corners to the legs on all four sides with screws, adjusting them so that the table is firmly attached to the top cover of the nightstand.

As a result, we get a low-cost and convenient changing table, which every mother needs if she cares about her health and the safety of her baby.
