The industrial and construction complexes in our country do not take breaks for the winter, which means that the paint and varnish industry must also meet similar requirements. Although most enamels and lacquers require application at temperatures above 0°C, modern technologies allow the production of a number of materials suitable for painting in the cold season.

Regardless of the material, which is selected depending on the needs, the application itself at sub-zero temperatures has a number of features.

First, an important factor when painting in the cold season is surface preparation. If metal is to be painted, then it is necessary to thoroughly clean it from condensate and ice. And since in most cases brushes and scrapers cannot be handled thin layer frost, it is recommended to additionally heat the surface with a torch of a gas burner.

Secondly, painting at temperatures from -5°C to 5°C should be avoided, since it is in this temperature range that condensation and dew form on the metal surface. To avoid moisture condensation, the temperature of the surface to be painted must be at least 3°C above the dew point.

Thirdly, in winter, degreasing metal surfaces it is advisable to produce with acetone or P-4 or P-5 solvents.

Fourthly, even if the manufacturer allows painting at temperatures below 0 ° C, such weather conditions cannot but affect the drying time of the coating - compared to the indicators indicated in the quality certificate, it will increase by 2 or even 3 times.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the storage of enamel - regardless of its composition, it should be stored exclusively in a warm room, in the future the surface to be painted and the paint should be at the same temperature. If possible, the surface to be painted must be warmed up.

The choice of paint and varnish material also needs to be taken very seriously, because the final result depends on this choice - the durability and functionality of the resulting coating.

Paints and varnishes that can be painted with negative temperatures:

Enamel KO-870- heat-resistant anti-corrosion enamel KO-870 is designed for protective painting of equipment and metal surfaces exposed to temperatures from -60°C to + 600°C during operation. Heat-resistant enamel has excellent resistance to aggressive environments: petroleum products, salt solutions, mineral oils.

Enamel can be applied at negative temperatures down to -30°C.

Facade enamel KO-174- designed for protective and decorative painting of facades of buildings and structures (concrete, asbestos-cement, brick, plastered surfaces), as well as for anti-corrosion protection of metal surfaces operated in atmospheric conditions, including high humidity. It is applied at temperatures from -30°С to +40°С.

Organosilicate composition OS-12-03- enamel for the protection of metal structures from atmospheric corrosion, as well as corrosion in gaseous media with a slightly aggressive degree of exposure. Application temperature range from -30°С to +40°С.

Primer-enamel ХВ-0278- chemically resistant primer-enamel for painting metal surfaces with residues of scale and dense rust. Application temperature from -10°C to +25°C.
Primer-enamel “Spetscor”” - coating based on primer-enamel is resistant to UV rays, hydrophobic, has good vapor and air permeability, moisture resistance, frost resistance down to -60°C.

Apply to the surface at an ambient temperature of at least minus 20°C

Enamel HV-124- for painting primed metal surfaces, as well as wooden surfaces used in atmospheric conditions. Enamel is applied at temperatures from -10° to +35°C.

Enamel ХВ-785- for protection in a complex multi-layer coating of pre-primed equipment surfaces, metal structures, as well as concrete and reinforced concrete building structures, operated indoors, from the impact of aggressive gases, acids, solutions of salts and alkalis at a temperature not exceeding 60 ° C. Enamel is applied at temperatures from -10° to +35°C.

I went to a seminar organized by the Origami Publishing House, the Cleaning.Okraska magazine, held in St. Petersburg on November 14-15, 2011 under the title "The practice of applying paint and varnish coatings at low temperatures."

In addition to listening to the information that I know about the types of corrosion and how to deal with it, about the Wiwa painting equipment, which I will talk about later in the Equipment section, where the experience of working with many painting machines is already described, and showed a small master class on coloring of corrugated board.

I also listened to a very interesting lecture by technologists of the Morozov Chemical Plant on applying paint at low temperatures.

Morozovsky Chemical Plant Russian enterprise for the production of enamels. It was he who began to produce heat-resistant enamels of the well-known types KO and OS. I will also talk about enamels, but later, in the Materials section. I think it will be interesting.

I had a long-standing correspondence relationship with MHZ. It was very nice to meet you in real life. There is no doubt about their professional approach to ACS. What are the trips of the chief technologist of the Moscow Chemical Plant Urvantseva G. to many facilities where they are painted with enamels, her constant consultations and technical supervision of the production of painting at the facilities. A huge number of grateful reviews about the MHZ.

So, returning to main topic seminar.

Paints can be applied at low temperatures. For this, the following conditions must be met:

1) It is impossible to paint at a temperature of +-5 degrees. C. This is due to the formation of condensate, dew, on the metal surface. In general, this temperature is the worst for staining with any paints.

2) The surface to be painted and the paint must be at the same temperature. When airless spraying warm paint on a cold surface, when materials of two different temperatures come into contact, condensation also forms. Even if we all understand that airless dyeing is very fast, nevertheless, condensation forms.

3) The question of how to paint concrete surfaces at low temperatures requires additional consideration.

Of course, a lot has been said about the fact that it is possible to paint with enamels OS and KO produced by MHZ, up to -10 degrees C, without loss of quality, but I did not have to work with them at such a temperature.

I had to work with enamels:

PF-115 and XV-0278, at temperatures from -0 to -10 degrees. S. It was just cold to work on. I painted in a cold room, with paint that was stored there.

ХВ -174 in the open air at a temperature of 0, + 5 degrees C metal structures of the same temperature, paint stored at the same temperature.

PF-100 indoors at a temperature of -5, + 7 degrees C, which was eventually raised to +12 degrees C

As you can see, the temperature regime was not observed everywhere.

As a result:

Application:- just like always.

Drying: XB 0278, 2-3 hours (same as always)

PF-100 - drying 2-3 days (according to the passport - a day)

PF - 115 drying from 7-10 days or more (according to the passport - a day)

XB -174, the same as always, drying 2-3 hours.

Polymerization: XB 0278, 5-7 days (same as always).

PF-100, 5 days.

PF - 115, not known. When we left the object, it was not dry yet 🙂

XB -174, drying 2-3 hours (same as always).

Exploitation: XB 0278 has been standing for more than a year, without coating defects.

PF-100, no negative reviews, it is impossible to get into the painting area

PF - 115, stood for half a year, in the fall it began to fly off with mugs.

XB -174, stood for a year. Started to fly off burdocks.

It should be noted that PF-100 and XV-0278 enamels are classified as primer-enamels for rust. They have additional additives in their formula, have an order of magnitude different cost. Although I am skeptical about coatings such as primer-on-rust, nevertheless, in these conditions they showed the best results.

PF-115 based on Russian SNIP is not recommended for painting metal structures used in industrial environments. Therefore, the legality of the project for painting PF-115, metal structures is in great doubt. Even under the conditions of application at low temperatures, she behaved in the most pleasing way.

An example of painting XB-174, which does not differ from XB-0278 in its plastic properties, showed non-compliance with technologies and the result was not long in coming.

Thus, on a personal practical experience From my observations, I can confirm that it is possible to make a high-quality coating at low temperatures. The main thing is not to carry out painting work at + - 5 degrees. FROM.

facade weatherproof paint SEVEROL It has high UV resistance, fast drying time, high vapor permeation resistance and good waterproofing properties. It is applied at temperatures from minus 30 ° C and high relative humidity air.

Preparation of the metal surface, application and curing of the protective insulating 2k coating "ZIMAPRIM" at low temperatures.

1. Obvious rust should be cleaned mechanically. It is advisable to carry out chemical treatment with Ortamet. Rinse and degrease the metal surface after treatment. For washing, solvents P-5 or Ortho xylene are recommended.
2. Immediately before applying the coating, it is recommended to moisten the surface with a fly brush or using a sprayer with a specialized TDR solvent included in the material. This is necessary for better adhesion, as well as for replacing moisture, frost and frost from the metal surface with a solvent. In the case of obvious ice, before moistening with a solvent, spray the surface with a torch from a propane burner.
3. Weather conditions such as snow blizzard freezing rain will affect the appearance of the surface. The best for work in the winter will be calm sunny weather from 10 am to 3 pm.
4. Component A and component B must be mixed in portions, mixed, kept for 15-25 minutes and filtered through a nylon filter element of a cone or bag type. The pot life of the mixture is four to six hours. Preferably applied with a velor roller. Airless application with a high-pressure apparatus of 300 bar is allowed.
5. When carrying out painting work, it is necessary to have a comb-type thickness gauge. The wet layer thickness should be 120-150 microns. In case of urgent need, it can be applied wet on wet with an interval between coats of 3 hours.

Surface preparation for coating operation in conditions (U) of temperate climatic zones

If, when viewed without magnification, the surface is free from oil, grease and dirt, as well as from easily separable mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles, then surface preparation can be limited to a metal brush and a chisel without pickling and without abrasive blast cleaning: St2 - Careful manual mechanical cleaning.

Due to the fact that solvent-borne acrylic copolymers reject oils and greases, it is necessary to ensure that the ADHESION and IMPACT HARDNESS values are maintained. COMPLETELY REMOVE residues of rolling oil and coolant from products made of cold-rolled and chopped material. Note that lubricants can be masked by minor corrosion. If we apply the ORTAMET pickle on such a surface, we will see how the corrosion is compressed into phosphate, and the lubricant is released in a free form. PROHIBITED! the use of white spirit, solvent, gasoline, even for degreasing and washing tools.

For confident use in temperate (U) climatic zones, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory procedures, namely:
1 - surface preparation to St2 - "Thorough manual mechanical cleaning" when viewed without magnification, the surface should be free from oil, grease and dirt, as well as from easily separable mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles (3.1, note 1 ) (photographs B St 2, C St 2 and D St 2 according to the standard). GOST R ISO 8501-1-2014;

5 - decline

SEVERON applied in 2 - 4 layers with a total coating thickness of 200 to 400 microns. Two coats on bare or primed metal. In three or four layers when applied to a surface with traces of primary corrosion.

Surface preparation for operation of the coating at a temperature of -60 ° in the conditions of CL and UHL climatic zones

Severon enamel primer, like a polymer film, retains its performance at temperatures from -60C° to +125C°.

When operating at low temperatures down to -60C°, very important role plays the state of your chosen surface.

Hot-rolled surfaces show the best results. Surfaces made of cold-rolled and chopped materials, surfaces with varying degrees of oxidation and scale, as well as surfaces previously painted, require careful preparation!

For reliable operation of the coating in the conditions of CL and UHL climatic zones at temperatures up to -60 ° C, it is necessary to carry out a number of preparatory procedures, namely:
1 - surface preparation to Sa 2 ? - "Ultra thorough abrasive blast cleaning", when viewed without the use of magnifiers, the surface after cleaning must be free from oil, grease and dirt, as well as from mill scale, corrosion, paint coatings and foreign particles. Any remaining traces of cleaning are allowed in the form of pale spots, dots or stripes (photos A Sa 2 ½, B Sa 2 ½, C Sa 2 ½ and D Sa 2 ½ according to the standard) ”GOST R ISO 8501-1-2014.
2 - etching according to GOST 9.402-2004;
3 - R-12, ORTHOXYLOL, CAPILYAR TU 20.30.12-018-81212828-2017 (*special attention to cold-rolled and chopped products);
4 - immediately 20-40 minutes before the application of paintwork materials, removal of moisture and ice by "wet drying" with "CAPILYAR" material or R-5, R-12 solvents;
5 - decline surface tension forces for the best adhesion - KAPILYAR TU 20.30.12-018-81212828-2017.

The method of application must be strictly observed:

SEVERON is used for responsible work, it prevents corrosion for a long time, it can be applied directly to the metal. Does not require pre-priming. Without preliminary priming, the number of layers of material should be increased. The application of a primer coat directly on the metal by pneumatic spraying should be avoided! To create an anti-corrosion layer directly on the metal, the airless spraying method with high-pressure cleaners, higher than 300 bar, is suitable. (list of recommended devices from 300 bar)

SEVERON is applied in 2-4 layers with a total coating thickness of 200 to 400 microns. For service at -60C°, a minimum of three coats must be applied.

For reliable use at temperatures of -60 °, it is forbidden to add solvents intended for temperate zones to Severon before application!

If the paint still peels off from the product, it is necessary to examine under a microscope the layer that was directly close to the metal. Due to the fact that solvent-borne acrylic copolymers reject oils and greases, it is necessary to COMPLETELY REMOVE rolling oil and coolant residues from cold-rolled and chopped products.

Previously, prior to the preparation for painting, the engineering department or the CDP must issue a flow sheet "Anti-corrosion protection of metal structures based on Severon AkCh-1711 enamel primer". The site foreman must be personally responsible for compliance with the flow sheet when performing work.

"ORTAMET" — metal phosphating compound;
rust inhibitor

Phosphating solution “ORTAMET” can be applied directly to rust even in frost (down to -15 °C). Surface treatment with ORTAMET solution can be done with a brush, roller or spraying in factory or production conditions. The ORTAMET solution is applied to the surface and exposed to air until the surface is completely dry. The ORTAMET solution converts rust on the metal surface into a durable black-brown coating, consisting mainly of iron phosphates, which creates a protective film on the surface. This protective film is a barrier to the emergence of new foci of corrosion and at the same time adhesive primer for further application of coatings. Due to its ease of use and the use of non-toxic and non-poisonous components, phosphoric acid based phosphating is the most widely used in industry. Processing with ORTAMET solution can be carried out at negative ambient temperatures (up to -15 °C). Phosphating solution “ORTAMET” is supplied in 5 kg buckets.
Phosphating rust modifier for treating steel, zinc, cadmium, copper, aluminum and cast iron surfaces prior to paint application. ORTAMET is based on phosphoric acid, corrosion inhibitors, and special additives.

Purpose: protection of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, metal surfaces and products from corrosion by converting rust into a protective phosphate film, forming chemically bound layers of insoluble phosphate salts of iron, zinc and manganese.
Cold phosphating with ORTAMET ensures high adhesive strength, anti-corrosion and weather resistance, high adsorption paintwork. Significantly extends the life of the paintwork. Gives anti-friction, electrical insulating and extrusion properties. Easy to apply, environmentally friendly. ORTAMET converts rust on the metal surface into a durable silver-black to black-brown coating (consisting mainly of secondary and tertiary iron phosphates).
Rust converter ORTAMET is used both for primary painting and for a dense layer of rust.

Application area: metallurgy, machine and shipbuilding, energy and oil and gas industry.

Mode of application: ORTAMET is applied to a dry, clean surface. Degrease the surface if necessary. Painting should be done after complete drying of the treated surface.

Waiting time before applying coatings (drying / bluing): at a temperature of - 5 ° C for at least 30 minutes, at - 15 ° C - up to 10 hours. Drying can also be carried out at a higher temperature, for example 130 ° C (about 3 minutes). Application of the final paint coating should be carried out no later than 2 days from the moment the rust converter dries. Application temperature: from +5 °С to +40 °С.

Application method: brush, roller, spraying, dipping.

Consumption: 40-60 g/m2 - depending on the method of application and the shape of the surface.

Precautionary measures: during and after completion internal works ventilate the room. Use personal protective equipment.

Storage: store in a tightly closed container, protected from sun rays. Storage temperature from -20 °С to +40 °С. ORTAMET is non-flammable, non-explosive. Warranty period of storage in the original packaging is 3 years from the date of manufacture.

Usually, painting work is planned for the warm season, when the temperature regime is most favorable for this. The lower recommended temperature threshold for painting is plus 5 degrees. But now there are many modern paints and primers that are suitable even for negative temperatures. In this regard, the minimum possible limit at which temperature you can paint on the street has changed.

Features of painting work in winter

In industrial conditions, the need for painting at low temperatures arises if you need to hand over the object on time, or you urgently need to update the surface of the building. In everyday life, such urgency is rarely observed, but it still happens. There are a number of painting features in the cold season:

  1. The most unfavorable temperature for applying paints, enamels and primers in winter is from minus 5 degrees to plus 5 degrees. Even in cold weather, it is better to work, because it is in the specified range that condensation will form on any surface. In the presence of moisture, the adhesion of the coating deteriorates greatly, the properties of the paints change. The quality of the coating is reduced, it will not last long.
  2. If you decide to paint facades in cold weather, you need to remember that facade paint of any brand dries 2-3 times longer than in warm weather. To get a high-quality coating, you need to use a thermal gun for drying or stretch the film on scaffolding.
  3. You should choose only enamel suitable for the winter season, a primer. Using the wrong material will cause it to freeze, and the ice will not allow the product to be applied to the walls. The final result of the work depends on the quality of the paint.

A number of modern paints are perfectly applied at zero temperature and in frost, some can be applied down to -20 degrees. There is good means resistant to temperature extremes. It is important that the temperature of the paintwork material itself during operation be positive. If the material is cold, it is placed in a container in a bucket of warm water.

In the rules for the operation of the primer and paint in cold air, mandatory surface preparation is mentioned. You can not use coloring materials without certain actions:

  • clean the work area from the old coating;
  • treat the surface with a sandblasting machine, sandpaper or in another convenient way;
  • close up irregularities with putty;
  • if technology requires, carry out priming (walls should be primed if indicated by the manufacturer on the package with paint).

Can't work if it's raining or snow - you need to wait for the onset of normal weather. It is necessary to carry out staining with a roller, brush, but it is better to forget about the spray gun - its nozzle will quickly clog.

The most important thing is to make the surface clean and dry. You should also bring the enamel to the desired viscosity. Usually water-based paints are used, which are diluted with water. It must be remembered that alkyd materials sharply increase the viscosity in the cold, and do not forget to dilute and heat them up in time.

Priming work

In winter, a primer is used that is resistant to low temperatures (frost-resistant soil). If iron is stained, special phosphating compounds are used. They can be applied over rust, as they include special anti-corrosion components. Priming provides additional protection against corrosion, increases the adhesion of the final coating.

Painting the facades of the house

Carrying out exterior facade work in winter is possible with the right paint. After cleaning from dirt, dust, the walls are sanded, if there are areas of old paint or mold, they are removed. Next, the walls are primed with a product of the same brand with the main paint - this will improve the quality of the coating. They work with packages brought from the heat. As soon as the material begins to freeze, it is removed into heat, another package is taken out. The second coat of paint is usually applied after 3-5 days.

Painting bricks and surfaces with plaster

The coloring of such surfaces does not differ from that of the facades of the house. It is only important not to do the painting immediately after the masonry is completed - the work is postponed, the minimum period is a year. If you paint immediately, the coating will peel off. Surface preparation is required (cleaning with a brush from dirt, dust, mold). The chipped plaster is cleaned, the holes are sealed, and allowed to dry well. You can also fill deep holes with frost-resistant silicone sealant. After priming, the wall is allowed to dry for 5-7 days, then it is painted with a roller or brush.

Concrete processing

Concrete floors and walls have a porous surface. Also outer side concrete products weather faster and the dye of the coating loses its brightness. Concrete staining can be done a year after installation, it is necessary to allow part of the concrete dust to escape. In some cases, it is possible to paint surfaces without curing - for example, in a workshop, in a warehouse, in a hangar.

Metal processing

In winter, it may be necessary to paint pipes, garage walls, iron sheathing of sheds, profiled fences, etc. The metal does not absorb moisture, so it does not change properties depending on the climate. For painting work, use special formulations for metal - at sub-zero temperatures, they form a strong elastic film.

Tips for painting metal in winter:

  • the surface must be dry, clean, free of rust with abrasive tools;
  • if there is frost, the surface is treated with a flash of a gas burner - a brush or scraper will be ineffective;
  • preliminarily carry out degreasing with isopropanol, acetone.

Wood painting

It is not recommended to paint wood, products from fiberboard, chipboard, lining in winter. If the house is wooden on the outside, it is better to leave its coloring until the warm season. Water accumulates between the fibers of the tree, which freezes in frost. The structure of the material expands, and the paint applied from above seals it in this state along with the ice. After thawing, the water begins to push out the paint, the latter does not stand up and goes in bubbles. Also under the enamel rotting of the tree begins.

If staining is urgently needed, a test is done first. Stick adhesive tape on the surface with a wide strip, leave for 2 days, then remove. If there is condensation on the tape, do not paint. With a dry strip, staining can be done after preliminary priming.

Painting work indoors

Painting a house inside during cold weather is much easier than doing outside work. But the specifics of painting must be taken into account.

Balcony

Painting a balcony or loggia in an apartment in winter may be required during the sale to improve the surface of walls, ceilings, and floors. The most difficult thing is to tint a cold balcony - it is better to wait for the positive temperature and only then carry out painting work. If necessary, you can purchase paint that can withstand low temperatures, wait for a sunny day, make sure that the walls of the loggia are warm enough, paint.

Staining is carried out only in the morning - the coating will dry faster due to the warming of the sun. If there is an outlet, you can take out a heater to the insulated balcony, this will allow you to carry out work efficiently. Acrylic water-based compositions are well suited for the balcony - with their use, poisoning can be avoided, they are environmentally friendly, odorless. These colors enhance thermal insulation characteristics walls, allow them to "breathe", fade and collapse very slowly. If there are plastic or metal parts on the balcony, it is better to varnish them. The lining is covered with acrylic varnish.

Batteries

Painting a battery in winter has a number of features. To paint the radiator, you need to prepare a brush with metal bristles, brushes - simple and radiator with a long handle. You will also need sandpaper, a dusting brush, a knife. Be sure to purchase a primer for metal, paint, solvent. The basic composition must necessarily be suitable for radiators and contain anti-corrosion additives, be non-toxic. Best suited means:

  • acrylic;
  • alkyd;
  • water-dispersion;
  • silicone;
  • based on heat-resistant varnish;
  • zinc.

How many degrees can these enamels withstand? They are designed for a standard temperature of +80 degrees. Some are available in aerosol form - they are sold by spray can, and even the most difficult colors can be easily painted by spraying. hard-to-reach places. Batteries for painting are best removed by shutting off the water supply. If this is not possible, it is worth waiting until the batteries are turned off in the spring. Hot batteries will be painted poorly, the coating will often swell. After cleaning the surface, it is primed, sequential painting is done in 2 layers. Each layer must dry completely.

Window

Painting wooden windows in frost outside is undesirable, as well as other wood products. Only the use of heat guns will make it possible to dry the product well, but the complexity of the work will increase significantly. From the inside, painting is carried out in the same way as it is done in warm weather. Old paint must be removed, the surface primed, then a suitable composition applied. Plastic windows can also be painted with special paints if you want to update their color.

What colors are used in winter

Enamels and primers, which are used at low temperatures, are diverse. Their properties:

  • do not freeze in the cold;
  • suitable for different types materials;
  • can be operated at temperatures up to -10 ... -20 degrees;
  • form an elastic layer;
  • Dries faster than regular paint.

Water-based paints

This type of paint is most in demand in winter. Very popular are the products of Dufa and Batilith, Dulux and Tikkurila, which produce many types of corresponding paintwork materials. Good frost-resistant paints are produced by the German company Caparol. A number of manufacturers produce frost-resistant water-based paint AK-115, which can withstand up to -20 degrees below zero. Other known materials:

  • parade f20;
  • Lacra;
  • Alpa Façade;
  • primer Brite Professional;
  • Vincent Muralith F1.

Oil paints

Oil materials are now almost not used. In terms of properties, they are much inferior water-based paints, their service life is not more than 2-3 years. It is necessary to dilute the funds with drying oil, special solvents. Only some paints marked PF, MA, GF are suitable for working in the cold.

Aerosol paints

Enamels in cylinders are used, for the most part, for painting batteries, cars, plastic products. They are quite expensive, but they create a high-quality coating. Popular brands are:

  • maxi color;
  • Colomix;
  • dupli color;
  • vixen.

Most paints of this type can be used down to -15 degrees.

Storage temperature of paints and varnishes

Generally, the allowable storage temperature is indicated on the packaging of the material. According to GOST, paints and varnishes can be stored at a temperature of -40 ... + 40 degrees, but individual conditions may exist for each specific material.

The recommended temperature threshold for painting work should not be less than +5 degrees C. If for objective reasons there is an urgent need to varnish the floor at a negative temperature, you should pay close attention preliminary preparation surfaces.

In addition to the fact that any floor must be cleaned of traces of the old coating, cleaned, washed and dried, there are additional recommendations for the preparation of various materials of the varnished surface at temperatures below 0 C:

  • it is advisable to paint or varnish concrete floors no earlier than a year after creation, so that the surface is “dust-free”. Without preliminary exposure, it is possible to carry out painting work on self-leveling concrete floors in workshops, hangars, warehouses;
  • the metal floor must first be removed from moisture or ice and treated with a torch of a burner (gasoline or gas);
  • varnishing a wooden floor at low temperatures is extremely undesirable due to frozen moisture particles in the porous structure of wood - the surface is unevenly protected by paintwork materials. To make sure that the base does not contain excess moisture, you can use a piece of adhesive tape glued to the floor surface for a day. If no condensation appears on the tape during this time, varnishing and staining can be carried out.

What minus temperature can wood varnish withstand?

Modern manufacturers of coatings, due to additional inclusions, have ensured that their products can withstand short-term sub-zero temperatures. However, temperatures below -5°C are detrimental to wood varnished products.

Experienced builders are advised to cover the indoor floor with an outdoor varnish that can withstand lower temperatures. temperature conditions but there are pitfalls here too. If a large traffic is planned in the room, i.e., a load on the surface, the varnish for outdoor work will undergo very rapid abrasion and will be covered with “paths”.

What else is worth thinking about when painting at low temperatures?

For a quality result, namely for an ideal lacquered surface, it is necessary to remember such nuances as:

  1. Quality tools. Ideal wood varnish brush- wide and flat. The bristle can be both natural and artificial. The basic rule is that artificial pile should not be painted, otherwise the surface will acquire a dirty shade with stains;
  2. Rationally selected varnish. In order for the result to meet expectations, carefully study all the offers of coatings manufacturers. Do not hesitate to ask for help from the specialists of building stores or online markets: one “missed” question threatens not to be the most impressive effect of the work done.
  3. Lacquer applied at low temperatures dries 3 times longer. Professionals in such cases recommend covering the object with scaffolding with a film after applying paintwork and providing it with a thermal gun.

Before deciding on such a desperate act as varnishing a floor at sub-zero temperatures, repeatedly weigh the pros and cons. The formation of condensate, which adversely affects adhesion, is unavoidable under such conditions. This means that such a coating will not differ in durability.

Are there facade paints that can be applied at low temperatures?

Facade paints, which can be applied at low temperatures, are called all-weather (or winter) paints.

All-weather acrylic frost-resistant paint Akrial-Lux designed specifically for severe climatic conditions, including areas with abrupt changes weather conditions. Winter paint is used for painting facades made of concrete, foam concrete, asbestos cement in all climatic zones, in industrial centers with high air pollution.

All-weather winter paint for facade works Akrial-Lux possesses high resistance to an ultraviolet and atmospheric influences, forms a strong vapor-permeable covering. It has excellent adhesion to concrete, foam concrete, asbestos cement, brick, plaster.

Is it possible to paint the facade of a wooden house in rainy or cold weather?

It fits well on surfaces previously painted with oil, alkyd, latex and other paints (with the exception of lime paints).

All season winter paint Akrial-Lux applied to the surface with a brush, roller or paint sprayer in 1-2 layers. Painting work should be carried out at an air temperature not lower than -20ºС, provided that the treated surface is dry and not icy. Winter paint significantly increases the moisture resistance, weather resistance and service life of the facade.

For the restoration and restoration of building facades, special restoration paint is used. facade. This special paint is recommended for especially responsible and construction and restoration works on the most complex objects.

The paint can be applied at any time of the year at temperatures from -20°С to +35°С.

print version

The main part of painting work is carried out at positive temperatures, the lowest recommended threshold is +5 C. However, sometimes there is an urgent need to paint, for example, the facade of a building, in negative temperatures. This may be due to both updating the appearance of the building, and with the delivery of the facility on time.

How facade paint behaves at sub-zero temperatures

In addition, there are still objective production reasons for these works at temperatures below 0 C.

Rules and recommendations for painting surfaces at sub-zero temperatures

Compliance general principles technology of painting works, implies a thorough preparation of the surface for painting. Everything is carefully cleaned of traces of old paint, processed sandpaper, putty is applied to all irregularities, if necessary, covered with a primer. So, before painting the wall or the surface to be painted must be clean and dry.

- metal coloring

If we are going to paint metal, then there should be no condensation or ice on it. mechanical cleaning the surface will not work, there will still be a thin layer invisible to the eye. Therefore, in addition to removing moisture microparticles, it is recommended to treat the surface with a torch of a gas or gasoline burner.

- wood coloring

It is strongly not recommended to paint a tree in the cold season.

This is due to the fact that between the fibers of wood there is always a certain percentage of moisture. With negative values, the water between the fibers turns into ice and the surface is incompletely impregnated with paintwork materials. If, nevertheless, an urgent need arose, stick a piece of adhesive tape 5 * 5 cm on wooden surface and, if condensation does not appear on the adhesive tape in a day, then such a surface is more or less suitable for painting. Thus, when painting wood, you must make sure that the substrate does not contain frozen water.

- concrete coloring

Concrete, like wood, has a porous structure. Besides, concrete structures in outdoor conditions subject to weathering. Another feature of concrete is that it is desirable to paint it no earlier than 1 year after installation. This is due to its hygroscopicity and the need for dedusting. Basically, in negative temperatures, without preliminary exposure, a self-leveling concrete floor is painted in hangars, workshops and warehouses handed over to the customer.

- painting brick, plastered surface

Applies general technology surface preparation before painting.

With such a boundary condition, condensation forms on the surface to be painted, especially on a metal one. The value of painting for condensation, even if imperceptible, will impair adhesion and significantly reduce the polymer properties of the paint used. In the future, this will certainly affect the quality and durability of the entire coating.

When painting objects in conditions of negative temperatures, be sure to keep in mind that the drying time of paintwork materials can be 2-3 times longer than the similar painting time at positive outdoor temperatures. Therefore, after applying paintwork materials to the surface, it is desirable to cover the object with scaffolding with a film and provide an additional thermal gun.

The choice of paint must be approached very seriously. The final result of the work depends on your choice - the durability and quality of the resulting protective coating.

Paints that are used at low temperatures

Universal(wood, concrete, plaster, brick)

Tikkurila Euro Facade(up to -20 C)

Forms a high quality weather resistant coating. For the first layer, the paint is diluted with Euro Facade thinner in the amount of 10-20% of the total mass. For finish coat paint is applied without dilution. After drying, a durable matte finish is obtained. When used, the temperature of the applied paint must be at least +10 C. Consumption 1l./6m2.

Metal

Miranol - thixotropic (jelly-like) high gloss alkyd enamel, diluted up to 30% by volume. Good light and weather resistance. Consumption 1l/12-14m2.

Pansarimaali- excellent alkyd semi-gloss paint with active anti-corrosion properties. It is mainly used for painting roofs, drainpipes, railings and similar metal structures. In negative temperatures, it needs to be diluted up to 30% with a solvent. Consumption 1l/8-12m2.

Garden- semi-gloss alkyd enamel, with excellent wear-resistant characteristics. When working below 0 C, it needs to be diluted with solvents up to 30% by volume. Consumption 1l/8-12m2.

So, thanks to modern coatings, the possibility of painting any surface at low temperatures has become possible.

Benefits of paint over rust

In repair work, we often encounter the need to paint metal pipes and metal structures, as well as other metal products. The big problem here is that the metal often oxidizes in the presence of moisture and rusts. To remove rust from metal, it requires mechanical cleaning, then anti-corrosion treatment and painting. This is a very troublesome undertaking, often structural details are not available for cleaning rust.

Finally, to facilitate this process, rust paints were created, they are also very beautiful as decorative coating. These are modern paints of a wide spectrum of action.

The advantages of this type of paint:

  • applied directly to the rusty surface
  • creates a coating on the metal that repels water and dirt
  • covers the base well
  • strong adhesion to the base
  • anti-corrosion
  • fast drying
  • coating is durable, up to 8 years
  • wealth of colors

The disadvantages of this type of paint:

  • you can not paint with her objects that are heated to more than 150 degrees Celsius.
  • it is impossible for objects painted with this paint to come into contact with drinking water

Types of rust paints

To achieve the desired effect when processing these paints, it is necessary to understand their types and areas of applicability. Rust paints are classified according to the basis of the main substance, the purpose and maximum temperature of use, the number of components. So, there are water-based paints with phosphoric acid, they are the cheapest, but they have low resistance to environment; there are two-component with additives epoxy resins, polyurethane, and corrosion inhibitors. According to the main substance, paints are divided into:

  1. Epoxy. Toxic, do not use at home. Suitable for highly heated metal structures.
  2. Oil. Contains drying oil and natural oils. Temperature resistant. Anti-corrosion protection outdoors is low, suitable indoors.
  3. Alkyd. For galvanized metal. Extremely flammable, should not be used on highly heated metal structures. Very adhesive.
  4. Acrylic. Prolonged anti-corrosion protection. Suitable for highly heated structures, such as heating elements, indoors and outdoors.
  5. Special paint for rust 3 in 1. Reduces the cost and shortens the restoration of rusted metal. Quickly applied directly to bare metal. Low cost. Includes resin, anti-corrosion elements. Highly adhesive, fast drying, protects for up to 8 years.
  6. Hammer colors. Gives a rough, hammer-like finish with a metallic sheen.

    The paint uses alkyds, acrylics, epoxies, aluminum powder. Gives also glossy and semi-gloss shades. Also suitable for non-ferrous metals. The primer before drawing can be not applied. The first layer acts as a primer, the second is anti-corrosion, the third acts as the actual enamel. Do not paint objects heated above 150 degrees.

  7. Anti-corrosion paints for car body repair.
  8. Aerosol form. It has many functions, convenient for touching up in places of painting defects and difficult access. Also suitable for non-ferrous metals and other natural materials. The universal grade of this paint also performs the functions of a primer, anti-corrosion and decorative.

Methods for protecting metal from rust:

  • Active electrochemical protection
  • Galvanic sacrificial protection
  • Cold galvanized matella
  • Rust capping in a polymer film, metal painting
  • Phosphating, rust conversion

Outdoor Rust Paint

Metal structures where anti-corrosion painting is necessary:

  • plumbing and heating pipes
  • metal fences
  • architectural plan metal structures
  • greenhouses
  • lattices, gates

Applying rust paint to the surface

In order to achieve the expected effect during the repair, it is necessary to correctly follow the stages of processing the object with these paints. You need to carefully follow the sequence of actions, otherwise your work may be defective.

  1. Paint heating systems only when they are turned off, use heat-resistant paint that can withstand up to 150 degrees.
  2. Furnaces are painted with compositions that can withstand up to 500 degrees.
  3. Non-ferrous metals require special primers.
  4. Outdoor facilities require organic solvents.
  5. If the rust is loose, it must first be removed, otherwise the paint will peel off.
  6. Before using the paint, check that its heat resistance corresponds to the heating temperature of the product to be painted.

best paint for rust

The price depends on the company and on the components.

Let's pay attention only to the most widely used types of paints, high quality which have been proven in practice.

Hammerite for rust:

The most popular. With its help, you can achieve the effect of gloss, hammer and slightly matte. Does not allow dirt to accumulate on the structure. It is used in the design of cottages, in industrial construction, in roofing works, in painting communications, industrial and agricultural equipment, various metal structures. The surface may not be cleaned.

PromAlpForum

Withstands from -20 to + 80 degrees of temperature. The paint acts simultaneously as a primer, rust converter and decorative coating. Dries quickly, multiple coats applied per day. It is necessary to ensure that the surface does not exfoliate before painting. Do not use with bituminous materials. Non-ferrous metals must first be primed.

Primers-enamels for rust:

Very easy to use, really facilitate the process of destroying rust when applied. They give the effect of 3 in 1, i.e. act simultaneously as a primer, anti-corrosion agent and decorative coating. The surface is cleaned of dirt, degreased with white spirit, rust is removed with a spatula, metal brush or emery. Mix and apply two coats at intervals of 30 minutes to 5 hours. If this time has elapsed, the second layer can be painted only after 30 days.

Other popular most purchased rust paints:

  1. Enamel primer “Rzhavoyed-Universal. Cleans and primes the base. The filled color is created with the second layer.
  2. Paint "Stainless steel". On the alkyd base, quick-drying, anti-corrosion.
  3. Paint "Meerk iron". Good lays down, masks flaws. Doesn't do much against rust. Low price.
  4. Primer-enamel Alpina (Direct auf Rost). There is no lead, unlike many other paints. Does not smell, creates a durable coating, fits well. First, it is enough to remove dirt from the metal.

In general, when using rust paint, it is important to carefully read its instructions, because there can be significant differences in the application of different grades of these paints. At the same time, it should be noted that in some instructions the paint quality is somewhat overestimated, so it is necessary to check in other sources whether it is really not necessary to prime the surface before use, as well as such indicators as, for example, paint suitability at -20 degrees frost, are written only for force majeure, in reality this does not mean that it is usually used at this temperature.
