Peculiarities

A house made of timber with an attic extension has both advantages and disadvantages.

pros

To begin with, it is worth noting the arguments in favor of choosing houses made of natural timber. The most important of them is appearance. They look beautiful even if they are built by a non-professional craftsman. In addition, the wooden base goes well with the natural background - shrubs, trees and flowers.

Wood is an environmentally friendly material that has good noise and heat insulation properties. If you use natural wood to build or decorate a house, it will be warm and cozy at any time of the year. Wood is a naturally durable material. So you can be sure that the building will last a long time, and its appearance will remain as attractive as immediately after the construction of the house.

And, of course, one cannot help but note the fact that profiled timber is one of the most affordable materials. This means that almost anyone can afford to build a house from it. A house with an attic is also a cost-effective solution. After all, its construction will require much less material than the construction of a full second floor. In fact, such a house does not cost much more than an ordinary one-story building.

Minuses

The timber also has significant disadvantages. The main one is that it is less durable than simple logs. The fact is that the structure of the annual rings is broken in the timber. But its strength can be increased by using various antiseptics and special impregnations. Also, to increase strength, the timber is sometimes tinted.

Also, despite the fact that the timber has decent thermal insulation, it is significantly lower than that of logs.

Another disadvantage is that the timber dries out over time. Because of this, a smooth and even wall is significantly deformed. But this can also be avoided. For this purpose, professionals use the technique of longitudinal cutting, thanks to which the load on the wall is less and it does not sag.

The problem with pests and rot is also solved. But if the timber is not impregnated with special antiseptics, then there will be serious problems with the frame of the house. The same is true with fire resistance, which the timber naturally does not initially have. But after proper processing, the wood becomes less susceptible to fire.

Types of materials

Today there are several main types of timber. Each of them has its own pros and cons.

Non-profiled

One of the most common types is non-profiled timber. There are no grooves on it, which can be called a minus.

The fact is that this feature complicates the installation process. And after finishing, gaps remain on the wall. Therefore, we have to separately address this problem as well.

Because of this property, houses made from non-profiled timber, despite their cheapness, end up being quite expensive. The cost is affected by additional finishing and professional services. However, caulking of cracks is carried out a year after construction, so there is an opportunity to save up some money before moving on to the next stage of construction.

By the way, In terms of appearance, non-profiled timber is also not the best option. It does not look very attractive, which means that you will have to do additional finishing work on the house both outside and inside.

When choosing non-profiled timber, professionals recommend paying special attention to how long ago it was cut. The fact is that the wood must be very well dried, so “fresh”, wet timber is not suitable.

Profiled

Unlike the previous version, the profiled timber is very good and easy to process. Professionals advise buying this one, even if it costs a little more. As a result, construction can cost more on a budget than from a non-profiled analogue.

At the same time, the material is much easier to install due to the fact that it has special grooves. There are virtually no visible seams left. But if there is a need for this, they can be sealed with a high-quality porous sealant. A properly chosen sealant is good because it does not make the house too stuffy. The building is well ventilated and no additional ventilation is needed.

As in the case of non-profiled timber, you need to buy well-dried material.

If you make the right choice, then over time the walls of the house will not “shrink” and the structure will not change its appearance. So, finishing can be done immediately after the construction of the building and without waiting additional months, or even years.

Glued

Such a high cost is due to the peculiarities of creating timber. To make it, boards of different thicknesses are used, which are glued and pressed. Glued laminated timber is very hard and, accordingly, durable. It is resistant to moisture and does not dry out over time.

When creating the frame of a house, the wall turns out to be smooth, with virtually no joints or seams. Therefore, it turns out to save on the seal. And the laying speed is much faster than in the case of profiled and non-profiled timber. True, there is also a significant disadvantage in this - the fact is that in such a project it is necessary to carry out ventilation separately, since due to the tight fit of the timber the wall does not allow air to pass through.

Many people consider laminated timber not environmentally friendly. But that's not true. After all, in its production, high-quality PVA glue is used, which, unlike wood glue, is not harmful to health.

In general, to create a log cottage, you can choose any of the proposed materials. This allows you to make wooden houses of varying degrees of complexity and at different prices. Such country projects with a terrace and an attic are not only durable, but also beautiful both inside and out.

Projects

Today there are many projects of houses made of timber. You can choose any option, focusing primarily on the size of the yard where the building will be erected.

If the yard area is small, you will have to erect a small building. Here you can choose a building with dimensions 6x7, 6x4, 6x6. Such houses are small, but at the same time have sufficient area to accommodate all the necessary rooms. If you add a terrace to such a building, for example, you get a building measuring 6x9.

If space allows, and a large family will live in the house, then you should not skimp on materials; it is better to build a building measuring 8x8 or 9x9. Extra square meters will make the rooms larger and more spacious.

However, it is worth taking into account not only the size of the building. Nowadays, attention is also paid to the appearance of buildings, since no one wants to live in a house that is not pleasing to the eye. A modern architectural building should be thought out as much as possible both inside and outside. Here are some of the most popular project ideas.

7x8

7 by 8 meters is a medium-sized building. It is convenient for a small family to live in such a country house. The construction is compact and inexpensive. True, the final cost in the end always depends on the configuration of the construction site thought up by the owners.

To save money, you can abandon unnecessary decor and opt for the simplest design possible. In such a house there is enough space for a spacious living room with a kitchen on the ground floor. The attic floor can be used as a bedroom, or divided into several smaller rooms.

If desired, you can expand the space a little, giving preference to a 7x9 project. Even in appearance, such a building will not resemble a dacha or a “hunting lodge”.

8x9

A house measuring 8 by 9 is a little more convenient and spacious. It can be built from timber 200 by 100 millimeters thick. Its length can reach up to ten meters. Using exactly this material, you can reduce the time it takes to build a house. At the same time, the structure turns out to be quite rigid and durable.

Houses made of timber are good because they are cheaper, absolutely environmentally friendly, and over time they do not develop cracking, as, for example, in houses made of rounded logs, they are quite functional. So, if you add an attic to the standard design, you can get an additional living room, playroom or office. However, the size of the house can be very different. But everything needs to be thought through at the design stage.

Advantages of a house made of 6x6 timber with an attic

Houses made of timber with dimensions of 6x6 are an excellent solution for a summer cottage, where the area for development is usually limited. Such a house is compact, small-sized, but it can easily accommodate all the necessary premises for a comfortable summer holiday. With a one-story structure, the space under the roof can be equipped with an attic, which would act as a bedroom. But it starts with design. The simplest plan is below.

With a building area of 36 m2 of living space, the result is 40-46 m2. For walls and partitions, profiled timber 100x150 mm is used, but 150x150 mm can also be used. Flax-jute fabric serves as insulation. The roof is gable or hip. In this project, the attic space is designed for one bedroom, so the roof can be gable.

The result: a neat, small, environmentally friendly wooden house. But this project does not provide for a bathroom or utility rooms and can only be equipped with a single-flight staircase. But it has a very spacious bedroom – 24 m2.

A more complex project of a 6x6 house, with a bathroom, a hall and two bedrooms on the attic floor, may look like this.

Such a house is more functional, but requires more serious engineering and technical developments: water supply, sewerage, a good ventilation system and insulation. It is better to make the roof attic, then the second floor will retain more space and light. Cobblestone houses of this type are well suited for summer cottages, where the family spends most of the summer time. They look simple, but at the same time elegant and modern.

House plans made of 6x8 timber with an attic

6x8 block houses also have completely different layouts. Depending on the number of family members and the requirements for the future structure, designs of timber houses with an attic can be quite ergonomic and simple, as in the project below.

To save space, it is recommended to combine all additional zones in one technical room. So you can install a boiler room in the bathroom. The dressing room and dressing room are combined in the hall adjacent directly to the entrance. If you make both rooms small - 2.55 m, then there will be enough space for a small terrace.

On the ground floor there is a spacious kitchen, where you can equip a dining room and living room. The attic is a large bedroom. The advantage of the house is its simple layout; the project itself can easily be implemented within a few months. Both profiled and laminated timber are used as the main material. The first one is superior in technical characteristics. It is stronger and more durable, easier to work with.

The second type of project is a little more complicated. Photo below.

This layout would be a good solution for a family with children or for those who always welcome guests. The bedroom on the ground floor can easily be converted into a guest room. And if one of the bedrooms in the attic is not useful, it can be converted into a gym, billiard room, game room or office.

If you provide the house with all the necessary engineering and technical elements, it will be suitable for use in all seasons. The configuration of windows, roof and location of the central entrance can be selected individually.

If desired, the attic floor is complemented by a spectacular balcony, which provides more space, light and clean air. In the warm season, such a balcony will be a good place for a secluded relaxation. There is a small terrace on the ground floor, where you can also have a pleasant time.

Advantage: log houses do not require special foundation costs. With dimensions of 6x8, column or screw types are suitable, which are quickly installed, but fully withstand the load.

House with dimensions 7x8 and attic

Building a 7x8 from timber will cost almost half as much as brick or stone. The project below provides a small vestibule, a sufficiently sized kitchen-dining room and a living room on the ground floor. The attic consists of two bedrooms and a large hall.

For construction, profiled timber 100x150 mm is used for piping and 140x90 mm for erecting walls. For the subfloor, 25 mm edged boards are suitable, and for finishing floors, 36 mm tongue and groove boards are suitable. The foundation is pile or screw. The roof can be made of ondulin. In total, at minimal cost, you get a very beautiful, durable country house. And the money saved will be useful for finishing work.

Models of houses with a central entrance look interesting, which can be decorated in a very interesting way at the final stage. The design of such a house looks like this.

An example of a 7x8 house made of profiled timber with an attic floor and a balcony.

Project of a 9x9 block house with an attic

Houses of this type are designed depending on their intended purpose. This could be a spacious country cottage, a permanent residence, or a beautiful summer cottage where you can relax with a large group. The purpose of the building will determine the number of rooms, their location, the presence of additional technical premises (boiler room, sauna, boiler room, bathroom, terrace, balconies, etc.).

The layout of the most unpretentious building.

The house has two spacious rooms on the ground floor and one on the attic floor. As well as a terrace and balcony. This model does not provide any additional premises, so it is often chosen for the construction of simple summer cottages, without a kitchen or any engineering systems.

Everything can be built quite quickly (2-3 months) and with minimal costs. The result is a very attractive building with a living area of 77.4 m2.

A more expensive project with a kitchen, utility room, bathrooms, office and 4 rooms, which can be arranged at the discretion of the owners, looks like this:

Ultimately, the cobblestone house will look something like this. You can choose the color scheme of the exterior decoration based on your own preferences.

The nuances of building cobblestone houses

At the planning stage of the future home, in parallel with the virtual placement of all rooms, the materials for implementing the project are determined.

  1. Which timber to use. Planed is the cheapest material, but its quality is low. Profiled - easy to use, creates a durable structure without cracks, does not dry out over time, and is in the middle price position. Glued is expensive, but the most durable and not subject to deformation building material made from wood, usually coniferous.
  2. Foundation. For houses 6x6, 6x8 and 7x8, you can make a screw or columnar one, but for sizes 9x9 it is better to put a strip one
  3. Roof. It is best to use ondulin or roofing felt. And make a reliable layer of sound insulation, no matter what material the roof is made of, wind or rain without a sound-absorbing layer will interfere with proper rest.
  4. If the house will be used during the cold season, it is worth installing high-quality thermal insulation. Waterproofing is mandatory in any case, since wood is hygroscopic.
  5. When creating a project, you need to take into account how many people and what ages will live in the house. Elderly people need a bedroom on the ground floor. Little children should sleep closer to mom and dad, but teenagers need personal space away from their parents, which is where the attic comes in handy.
  6. Timber is not the most fireproof material, so it must first be treated with special fire-resistant solutions.

Why do you need a house project at all? Without it, it will not only be impossible to control the correctness of construction, consumption of materials and compliance with the architectural design; if necessary, a house without design documentation cannot be sold, since it is actually illegal.
