But today it is increasingly being replaced by a simple dining group, consisting of a table and chairs and placed in one of the rooms. A completely acceptable option, given the small composition of the modern family and the current lifestyle.
In an apartment, the dining area is usually organized in the kitchen or living room. Both solutions can be attractive, if, of course, you do not make the following mistakes.
Mistake #1: Not enough light
Even in gloomy weather and in the evening there should be light here, otherwise it will be uncomfortable to eat and communicate. Therefore, there is no place for thick curtains in the kitchen - you should prefer light, light curtains.
In the living room, of course, options are possible: the functional tasks of this room are broader - it sometimes requires both a bright, solemn atmosphere and a calm, intimate atmosphere, which is created by heavy curtains. So the main thing is to maintain a balance of dark and light and provide additional lighting for the dining area.
In general, it’s difficult to overdo it with light in the table area. It is only important that it is not direct, striking in the eyes, and does not cast deep shadows on faces: this can ruin the mood of even unassuming and patient people. Therefore, top lighting is preferable here to side lighting - it is better not to use sconces.
Multi-arm chandeliers or groups of hanging single lampshades are suitable: there can be two or eight of them - depending on the length of the dining area and the size of the lamps themselves. At the same time, they should hang low enough so that the light is focused above the table - this way the food looks more appetizing, and the couverts seem unusually beautiful.
Another advantage of this solution is the ability to adjust the light intensity. Lamps in a chandelier and shades can be turned on, say, in pairs, if you use double and triple switches. It’s good when they have a dimmer - for smooth adjustment of the brightness of the light.
But if the living room is small, this option may be too bulky for it. Then it is better to limit the size and number of lamps, and use more glossy surfaces and mirrors.
In the kitchen the situation is similar: in most of our city apartments, the kitchen is, to put it mildly, small. So many pendant lamps and large chandeliers are contraindicated for her. Glossy surfaces are not a solution here either - they are not very practical.
Therefore, you need to make the most of natural light and built-in ceiling lights by hanging one height-adjustable lamp above the table.
Mistake #2: choosing the wrong place for the table
In the kitchen The dining group is most often placed opposite the work area - the wall where the kitchen unit is located. This is the norm. But not for narrow, long and small rooms of 6-8 square meters. Here, such a solution leads to a loss of ergonomics of the entire space as a whole: it aggravates the cramped space in which both the process of cooking and eating are extremely awkward. The most successful option for placing a table in such kitchens is a place by the window.
Firstly, there is no way to put a refrigerator or stove here, and placing a sink is very problematic, given the need to relocate communications. Therefore, the window area is usually not used, but works like the rest of the space, which is very important when there is an acute lack of space.
Secondly, the table by the window is illuminated by natural light - it’s nice to sit at it with a cup of coffee both in the morning and at sunset. Especially if the window offers a picturesque view of the city or park. Or if you just like to watch street life.
It happens that in order to enlarge a small kitchen, it is connected to a loggia, and if this is the case, then placing a dining group in it is the most rational solution.
Between the kitchen and living room, when both rooms are small and therefore combined into one space, you can also successfully arrange a table for daily and holiday lunches and dinners. This option is optimal if no more than six people are expected to dine.
But if there is very little space in the kitchen, there are three more super-compact options - a wall-mounted table-shelf and a folding or extendable table.
They can be hidden in kitchen cabinets or folded against the wall, protruding only 10-20 centimeters above its surface. Such tables are practical and save precious space. Similar ones are produced, for example, by the Italian brand CLEI.
True, for a meal with more than three people they are still a bit cramped. Therefore, if the family is larger, the best solution is a transformable console table.
Thanks to the folding mechanism, this narrow table can expand two to five times - up to a full-size dining table, and when folded - stand against the wall, taking up very little space. In addition, there are models that have space inside for storing folding chairs.
Another advantage of consoles is their mobility: they are lightweight and among them there are often copies on casters. So the kitchen console table can be moved into the living room if necessary - this is the best solution if you have to save every centimeter. But if there is no such task, it is better to consider your options for the living room.
Dining table in the living room- a special hypostasis. Kitchen tables are not suitable here. In general, the purpose of any interior item is determined primarily by style and design, and secondly by size and material. Therefore, looking at the table, we most often immediately understand whether it is for the kitchen or the living room.
It is unlikely that anyone would assume that their place is in the kitchen - it would be a mistake to put them there. But in a modern-style living room, especially a small one, these types of tables are a rational and beautiful solution.
In addition, if a sofa is used as a seat in the dining area, then an adjustable height transformer is simply irreplaceable. In daily use, it most often plays the role of a coffee table, turning, when necessary, into a full-fledged dining table.
Mistake #5: Wrong chairs
When chairs are not included with the table, you have to select them yourself: they must suit it not only in style and color, but also in height and width.
Typically, the seat height of a dining chair is 45-48 centimeters, that is, 25-30 cm lower than the top of a traditional table. This is exactly the difference needed to make sitting at dinner comfortable. However, this parameter was calculated taking into account the average height of 165 centimeters. Therefore, for those who are significantly shorter or taller, standard tables and chairs are not very comfortable.
The table is not a problem: transformers come to the rescue here. Adding height to the seat of a chair is also easy - all you need is a thick cushion that you can put on it. But chairs with a low seat are a more difficult task: they will apparently have to be made to order. You can, of course, use a sofa instead if the dining area is in the living room. Just keep in mind that it is also much deeper than a chair.
The ergonomic seating depth at the table is 40-45 cm, so sitting on a regular sofa at lunch is uncomfortable. Either the backrest turns out to be far away - you can’t lean back on it, and therefore your spine is in constant tension, or you can’t reach the dishes. If the table is moved close to the sofa, then it will be extremely difficult to get out from behind it. In general, it’s uncomfortable, no matter how you look at it. So the only acceptable solution is a sofa with a transformable backrest depth.
Another important parameter when choosing dining chairs is their width. Moreover, it should be measured not by the seat, but by the widest element of the structure. For regular models, this is the base of the legs; for variations with armrests, this is the distance between them.
True, using the latter option in the dining area would be a mistake: chairs with armrests look massive, due to their large width they steal useful space at the table, limit access to it during lunch, and do not slide under it completely - all the way to the back. They are only suitable for the ends of the table.

To separate them, sometimes it is enough to place a sofa, armchairs and a TV stand so that they form a closed rectangle. The rug will further enhance the island effect in the room. To separate the dining area from others, you can use visual techniques - painting (or wallpapering) the wall on which the table or buffet is located in a color contrasting with the rest of the decor, decorating it with large posters, paintings, using different floor coverings (by color, material or invoice). 
A good result can be achieved with the help of artificial lighting. Use two ceiling lights: one above the table, the second in the area with the sofa. Additionally, install sconces or floor lamps. When, during a family dinner or a party with guests, the dining area is illuminated from above, and the sofa and armchairs are illuminated from below, the room turns into a welcoming dining room. The use of a table in a modern living room has become much wider than it was a few decades ago. The realities of modern life have expanded the scope of the functional purpose of this room itself, and at the same time the functionality of the table:
- Dining: This is a traditionally large structure in terms of height and tabletop area, which is intended for a meal for a certain number of people. Its variations in execution can be very diverse, as well as the materials from which it is made;
- Coffee table: a low table with a small area is a decorative detail of the interior, intended to place a small number of items on it - magazines, a couple of cups of coffee, a bowl of fruit, a candlestick with candles;
- Computer: designed to work with a computer, can be small in size or vice versa, equipped with a system of additional drawers, stands, and separator boxes;
- Desk: classic model with drawers or a cabinet. Designed for working with papers, writing, reading. Traditionally, it has a rectangular tabletop with a niche for placing feet;
- Serving: a small table, usually having 2-3 tiers and wheels. Designed to facilitate setting the main table, performing a transport function from the kitchen area to the living room area. Sometimes it is used instead of a coffee table;
- Transformable table: this is a universal piece of furniture that can combine two types of purposes in one design. It is used to save space in a small room, turning into a full-fledged dining table when used in its unfolded form.
The working surface of any table can be used for a wide range of needs of people living in the room. The main deciding factor for this is the height as well as the surface area.
Kinds
The table is chosen depending on the area of the room. Large dining units are placed in the kitchen or in a large room in a country house. Compact options are most often used in small apartments. This household item can be selected for any function, taking into account the dimensions of the room:
- Collapsible models: consist of a base and removable elements added to it, which are attached to the table if necessary, and the rest of the time are stored separately;
- Folding models: all parts of this design, due to certain mechanisms, can be folded out, increasing their usable area, and folded back to their original compact dimensions;
- Models on wheels: used for serving types of small tables, or for small magazine models. Some options may be foldable, and they need wheels for easy movement around the living room areas;
- Set with chairs: used as a single system, consisting of a large dining table and a set of 6-8 chairs for it. A classic modular living room traditionally contains such a set of items. Usually these are luxury brands made of expensive wood;
- Built-in option: A table built into furniture has become a common folding option. So, a set of cabinet furniture for a kitchen or living room may well include such a detail.
Countertops are also varied - it can be a traditional rectangular version, square, round or even oval. Materials for manufacturing are used from expensive solid natural wood to particle boards made from wood products; in addition, tables can be found from glass, plastic, and wicker rattan.
Dimensions
The size range when choosing a table for the living room is not limited by anything other than the dimensions of the room itself where it will be installed:
- Large tables: the usable area of the tabletop is determined based on the number of people planned to be seated. The height of a standard dining table is 70-75 cm, which corresponds to a comfortable seat for a person of average height. The shape of the tabletop is selected depending on the overall design of the room, while hygiene standards provide for the width of one seat within 60-70 cm;
- Small tables: the design does not provide for any functional load other than decorative. This table does not need chairs; it can stand alone or next to upholstered furniture. Tables that are small in size and low in height can be installed several times in one living room, their height does not exceed 35-55 cm, and the area of the tabletop can be arbitrary;
