The world's oceans are the most amazing and least studied object on our planet. How many mysteries it contains, and how many discoveries remain to be made by people studying the deepest seas and oceans on our planet.

The deepest seas in the world

The Pacific Ocean has broken all records for depth and is home to four of the six deepest seas in the world. If you line up the seas by depth, both by height, in meters and kilometers, then their leaders are: the Philippine Sea and the Coral Sea, followed by the Banda Sea, the Caribbean Sea, the Weddell Sea and the Tasman Sea.

In first place is the Philippine Sea. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, near the Philippine archipelago. It is to this sea that the deepest oceanic trench is attributed - the Mariana Trench, thus the greatest depth of the Philippine Sea is 11022 meters. Even the average depth of this sea is more than 4 km, while the depth of the Sea of Azov, for example, does not exceed 14 meters.

There are volcanoes at the bottom of the Philippine Sea. Due to the enormous depth, marine life here has not been fully studied, mainly those found in surface and coastal waters. It is known that sea turtles, dolphins, swordfish, and various shellfish live in the Philippine Sea. In addition, there are a lot of sharks that are dangerous to humans, including tiger and gray sharks. But the large deep-sea inhabitants of the Mariana Trench are definitely predators, and what kind of ones at that! Most of all they look like monsters with many teeth and huge jaws. Not all deep-sea fish have eyes, and if they do, they are not at all like the ones we are used to, because at the bottom of the depression there is complete darkness. But many have very developed organs that detect sounds. There are also simple organisms there that have existed for billions of years.

The second place is occupied by the Coral Sea, with a depth of 9140 meters, one of the most beautiful seas in the world. This sea is also located in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of New Guinea and Australia. The Coral Sea is characterized by a large number of islands, and of course, many coral reefs. The most famous of them is the Great Barrier Reef. Among the inhabitants of the Coral Sea are starfish, urchins and turtles, flying fish, many different types of shrimp, crustaceans and crabs.

Third place rightfully belongs to the not very large, but very deep (up to 7440 meters) Banda Sea. It is located off the coast of Indonesia, and also belongs to the Pacific Ocean. This is a volcanic zone and the islands in the Banda Sea are of volcanic origin. This sea is home to dolphins, squids, jellyfish, octopuses, nautiluses, sharks, stingrays, and even sea snakes.

The Caribbean Sea is in fourth place in the depth ranking. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean between South and Central America. The depth of this sea is 7090 meters, and among the depressions and rises at the bottom lie sunken frigates and galleons. The search for sunken treasure continues to this day, and many countries dispute the ownership of these treasures.

How deep is the Black Sea?

The Black Sea is not the deepest sea in the world, but among the inland seas of our country it ranks first - its greatest depth is 2258 meters. Compared to the Sea of Azov, whose depth is only about 14 meters, or the Baltic (500 meters is the longest distance to the bottom), the Black Sea is very deep. It also differs from other seas in our country in that part of its shores are mountains (the Caucasus, the southern coast of Crimea), which go into the water at a steep angle. Because of this, the bottom slope in these places is greater. But there is also shallow water - this is the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

The deepest sea in Russia

Russia is a huge country, and its shores are washed by many seas, but most of them are in the North and East of the country. But the seas of the Arctic Ocean do not have the same depth and size as the seas of the Pacific Ocean, located off the eastern coast of our country. This is explained by the structure of the earth's crust in those places. Three seas are located in the Pacific Ocean in eastern Russia: the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the most northern of them - the Bering Sea. They are separated from the ocean itself by islands (Kuril, Japanese and Aleutian).

Next come the ocean depressions, including one of the deepest in the world - the Kuril-Kamchatka depression with a depth of 9717 meters. If we arrange these seas in order of decreasing depth, we get the following: the leader will be the Bering Sea with a maximum depth of 4151 meters. Then comes the Sea of Okhotsk, its depth is 3916 meters. And in last place will be the Sea of Japan, since it, although slightly, is inferior to the Okhotsk Sea, its maximum depth is only 3742 meters. As you can see, the deepest Russian sea - the Bering Sea - is far behind world leaders.

However, this is not all the most interesting things that can be said about the deepest sea in Russia..

Which sea is the deepest in the world?

There is no clear answer to this question, because depth can be assessed in different ways. Usually they still take the maximum depth for comparison, but you can also consider the average depth of the sea. Or the depth of most of the sea. True, no matter how deep the sea is, it still cannot be compared with the ocean depressions. The greatest depth was measured in the Mariana Trench - 11,022 meters.

It is essentially a deep-sea trench, and the name of the depression is given after the Mariana Islands located nearby. And, since the Mariana Trench is now classified as part of the Philippine Sea, it has become the leader in depth among all the seas on the planet. True, even without this depression, the Philippine Sea is the deepest in the world; the maximum distance to the bottom, according to some sources, is 10,265 meters.

Sea... Even the word itself sounds attractive.
An unusually beautiful object of nature with its own world, features, and character. Nature has acted amazingly, distributing the seas almost evenly throughout the world's oceans. The continents also suffered. Nowadays, geographical directories and tourist brochures tell us about the existence of 81 seas on Earth.
It is difficult to choose the most beautiful sea from all the variety of water expanses. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences. Some people love the southern shore of the White Sea, while others prefer to relax on the northern shore of the Black Sea.

The sea is a body of salt water that is connected to one of the five oceans. But some seas are located inside the continent, others are considered part of others, and others are considered a component of the ocean. There are about 90 marine bodies of water on our planet, which differ in size, shape, depth, and the presence or absence of shores. The top 10 includes the largest seas in the world by area.

Area 1.6 million square meters. km.

Russia's wealth will increase not only from Siberia, but also from the Arctic! This is a very important territory for Russia; according to many estimates, almost a quarter of the planet’s hydrocarbons are concentrated here (even if it’s less, it’s still a lot!). By the way, this proves the fact that previously there were warm seas, tropical greenery, and humid forests, because without this there would be no coal, oil and gas! The legends about Hyperborea and Arctida are quite justified. And on ancient maps, Greenland, Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya formed an arc, within which the current Barents Sea was located; it was probably still warm then! Maybe these mysterious lands hid an ancient civilization, after which there were mines, caves, stone sanctuaries and pyramids.

The water area of the White Sea is divided into several parts: Basin, Throat (the strait connecting the White Sea with the Barents Sea; the Throat of the White Sea is called “Girlo” by the Pomors, this word is used in exactly this vowel in his story “Sealed Glory” by B.V. Shergin), Funnel, Onega Bay, Dvina Bay, Mezen Bay, Kandalaksha Bay. The shores of the White Sea have their own names and are traditionally divided (in counterclockwise order into Tersky, Kandalaksha, Karelian, Pomorsky, Onega, Letniy, Zimny, Mezensky and Kaninsky; sometimes the Mezensky coast is divided into Abramovsky and Konushinsky shores, and part of the Onega coast is called Lyamitsky coast.

The seashores (Onega and Kandalaksha bays) are indented by numerous lips and bays. The western banks are steep, the eastern banks are low.

Yagry Island

Relief of the sea bottom
A large sandbank in the northern part of the sea with depths of up to 50 meters in the Dvina and Onega bays turns into a slope, and then into a depression in the central part of the sea with depths of 100-200 meters and a maximum depth of 340 meters (66°28′N 34° 09′E).
The central part of the sea is a closed basin, separated from the Barents Sea by a threshold with shallow depths that prevent the exchange of deep waters.

Bottom sediments in shallow waters and in the Gorlo consist of gravel, pebbles, sand, and sometimes shell rock. The bottom in the center of the sea is covered with fine-grained brown clayey silt.
Geologists have discovered ferromanganese nodules at the bottom of the sea.

Adriatic Sea

The attraction belongs to the countries: Italy, Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia
The Adriatic Sea is a semi-enclosed sea, part of the Mediterranean Sea between the Apennine and Balkan Peninsulas. It washes the coasts of Italy (more than 1000 km), Slovenia (47 km), Croatia (1777 km), Bosnia and Herzegovina (20 km), Montenegro (200 km), Albania (472 km). In the southern part, the Strait of Otranto is connected to the Ionian Sea.

The area of the Adriatic Sea is 144 thousand km², depth - from 20 m in the northern part of the sea to 1230 m in the south-east.

The western shores are predominantly lowland, the eastern shores are mountainous. Near the eastern coast are the Dalmatian Islands, which are the tops of the coastal ridges of the Dinaric Highlands, the intermountain valleys of which were flooded when the western part of the Balkan Peninsula subsided. The coasts are heavily indented by bays and abound in convenient harbors. The major bays are Venetian, Trieste and Manfredonia. The sea off the coast is deep, which facilitates navigation. The largest coastal islands are Krk (408 km²), Brac (396 km²), Cres (336 km²), Hvar (299 km²), Pag (287 km²) and Korcula (276 km²).

The water temperature from north to south varies from 24 to 26°C in August and from 7 to 13°C in February. Water salinity ranges from 35 to 38‰. Tides are irregular semidiurnal (up to 1.2 m). Summers are clear and winters are cloudy and rainy (up to 70% of annual precipitation).

The flora and fauna of the Adriatic Sea are quite rich. More than 750 species of algae grow, belonging to three divisions (red, brown and green). The coastal zone contains many species of gastropods and bivalves with thick, durable shells that reliably protect them from wave impacts, as well as echinoderms and crustaceans. The shallow waters are inhabited by oysters, mussels, sea limpets, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and small crabs. Seahorses swim in the algae thickets. At a slightly greater depth live large crustaceans - lobsters, large crabs, as well as octopuses, cuttlefish, starfish, eels and moray eels swim here. The water column is saturated with plankton and juvenile fish. The sea is plied with schools of sardines, mackerel, bladder and frigate mackerel, bonito and tuna. The currents bring a variety of delicate, transparent jellyfish and hydroid polyps that glow in the night. The most common sharks are the dwarf shark, the spiny shark, the blue shark, and the sea fox. The basking shark is very rare. Mammals in the Adriatic Sea include dolphins and the endangered monk seal.

The coast in Croatia is famous for such resorts as Dubrovnik, Split, Sibenik, Makarska Riviera, Pula, as well as the resorts of the Dalmatian Islands. The main resort area of Montenegro is the Budva Riviera. On the small Adriatic coast of Slovenia there are four resort towns - Koper, Izola, Piran and Portorož. Bosnia and Herzegovina has only one seaside resort - Neum. Albanian resorts are located in the Durres region and on the “Coast of Flowers” (the coast from Vlora to Saranda). On the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea, the popular resorts of Rimini, Bellaria, Igea Marina, the Venetian Riviera (Lido di Jesolo and Lignano), and the Palm Riviera (the coast from Mare Gabicce to San Benedetto del Tronto).

Arafura Sea

The attraction belongs to the countries: Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia
The Arafura Sea is a marginal sea of the Indian Ocean (according to other sources - the Pacific), between Australia, New Guinea and the islands of Tanimbar and Kai.

Area - 1017 thousand km² (1290 x 560 km), depth is mainly 50-80 m, to the west it increases to 3680 m. Large Gulf of Carpentaria. Since the Arafura Sea is a shallow tropical sea, tropical typhoons often originate in its waters.

Oyster fishing and underwater fishing are developed.

Balearic Sea

The Balearic Sea is a marginal sea in southern Europe off the eastern shores of the Iberian Peninsula, separated from the main waters of the Mediterranean Sea by the Balearic Islands.

Area 86 thousand km², average depth 767 m, maximum 2132 m. Average surface water temperature from 12 °C in February to 25 °C or more in August. Salinity 36-38 ‰, more at depth.

The bottom is lined with sand and silt. Rivers flow from the Iberian Peninsula: Ebro, Turia, Jicara, etc. Intense shipping, fishing is developed.

The largest ports: Valencia, Barcelona, Palma. Numerous resorts on the islands and on the coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Wadden Sea

The attraction belongs to the countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark
The Wadden Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean, a shallow sea area located between Denmark, Holland and Germany. Separated from the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea by the Frisian Island chain. It has significant gas reserves.

The five northern islands, located in the shallow Wadden Sea, form an arched coastline, the extreme points of which are the islands of Texel and Schiermonnikog.

The historic islands are a center for bird breeding, as well as a refuge for stressed-out southerners who want to get in touch with their natural roots.

Texel is the largest and most populated island. The length of the island's beaches is 24 km (15 miles). The world's largest catamaran regatta is held here every June. Only in Texel the main language is Dutch - in the other four the common language is Frisian. The island of Terschelling is considered a place of reckless entertainment, while the island of Vlieland, on the contrary, has a more cozy family atmosphere. The island of Ameland is home to quaint villages that become overrun with tourists in the summer. Ferries from Den Helder, Harlingen, Holwerd and Lauversog connect the islands with the mainland.

Ionian Sea

The attraction belongs to the countries: Greece, Italy, Albania
The Ionian Sea is the part of the Mediterranean Sea between the Balkan and Apennine peninsulas and the islands of Crete and Sicily. Through the Strait of Otranto it is connected to the Adriatic Sea, and through the Strait of Messina to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The area of the Ionian Sea is 169 thousand km², the maximum depth is 5121 m, which is the greatest depth of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Ionian Islands are located in the eastern part of the Ionian Sea. The largest bays of the Ionian Sea include Patraikos, Corinthian, Taranto.

The dynamics of changes in water temperature range from 14 °C in February to 25.5 °C in August. Salinity exceeds 38 ‰. Tides are semi-diurnal (up to 0.4 m). Economic activity: fishing (mackerel, red tuna, flounder, mullet).

Dead Sea

The inland sea, located between Israel and Jordan, is also called the Sea of Asphalt or in Hebrew Yam ha-melach - “Sea of Salt”. The saltiest sea in the world. The uniqueness of the reservoir is also in the fact that it is located 430 meters below the level of the world's oceans and is the lowest point on the earth's surface. Geographers and historians of ancient times wrote about the “Salt Lake”, noting that in the heavy waters of the sea you can stay on the surface even without knowing how to swim. The unusual landscape and healing properties of the sea attract not only tourists, but also researchers. In the sea and on its shores, scientists count 420 species of plants and more than 103 species of birds. Naturally, as an unusual place on Earth, many myths and legends are associated with the Dead Sea.

The average depth is 66 meters, the greatest is 155 meters. For most of the year the sea is covered with ice. Salinity ranges from 5 ‰ near river mouths to 30 ‰ in the north.
The following rivers flow into the sea: Indigirka, Kolyma.
There are several bays on the sea coast: Chaunskaya Bay, Omulyakhskaya Bay, Khromskaya Bay, Kolyma Bay, Kolyma Bay.
Large, Lyakhovsky, De Long Islands. There are no islands in the center of the sea.
Fishing for walrus and seal; fishing.
The main port is Pevek; Ambarchik Bay is also used.

Within these boundaries, the sea is contained between parallels 51°45′ and 34°26′ N. w. and meridians 127°20′ and 142°15′ E. d.

The configuration is characterized by a large length along the meridian, expansion in the central and southern parts and narrowing in the north.

Second in size to the Bering and Okhotsk Seas, the Sea of Japan is one of the largest and deepest seas in our country. Its area is 1062 thousand km2, volume 1630 thousand km3, average depth 1535 m, greatest depth 3699 m.
The geographical location and predominantly large depths indicate that the Sea of Japan belongs to the marginal oceanic seas.

There are no large islands. Of the small ones, the most significant islands are: Moneron, Rebun, Rishiri, Okushiri, Oshima, Sado, Okioshima, Ullyndo, Askold, Russky, Putyatin. The Tsushima Islands are located in the Korea Strait. All islands, except Ulleungdo, are located near the coast. Most of the islands are located in the eastern part of the sea.

GENERAL INFORMATION -
The Sea of Japan (Japanese 日本海 nihonkai, cor. 동해 donghae, “eastern sea”) is a sea within the Pacific Ocean, separated from it by the Japanese islands and. By origin, it is a deep-sea pseudo-abyssal intra-shelf depression connected with other seas and the Pacific Ocean through 4 straits: Korean (Tsushima), Sangarsky (Tsugaru), La Perouse (Soya), Nevelsky (Mamiya). It washes the shores of Russia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the DPRK.
A branch of the warm Kuroshio Current enters in the south.

Sea of D'Urville

The D'Urville Sea is a marginal sea of the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean, between 136° and 148° east longitude. It washes Adelie Land (East Antarctica). The southern part of the sea is located within the continental shallows with a depth of less than 500 m, the northern part - with a depth of up to 3610 m. Most of the year it is covered with drifting ice. Lots of icebergs. Salinity 33.7-33.8‰. Discovered in 1914 by the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-1914 under the leadership of D. Mawson. Named in honor of J. Dumont-D'Urville.

The oceans can be called a unique object on planet Earth. It conceals thousands of mysteries and surprises with the diversity of the underwater world. The World Ocean consists of a large number of oceans and seas, which differ in depth, size, flora and fauna. Among this diversity, scientists identify several of the deepest seas of the World Ocean.

It is recognized as the largest in size and deepest. It occupies 5726 thousand square kilometers. Since the deepest depression on earth belongs to the sea, its maximum depth is 11022 m. It is in this place that the Mariinskaya Trench was formed. The average depth of sea waters is 4108 m.

The sea is located near the Philippine archipelago and is an oceanic interisland sea in the Pacific Ocean, from which it is separated by numerous islands. The sea has no clear boundaries. There are volcanoes at its bottom. But there is little data on the marine life that is found in the waters of this sea. It's because of the great depth. Therefore, scientists were able to study mainly the inhabitants of coastal zones and surface waters.

Fauna in the Philippine Sea includes dolphins, sea turtles, swordfish and numerous shellfish. There are many sharks in the waters of the deepest sea, including gray and tiger sharks.

The second deepest sea is located in the Pacific Ocean - Coral. It has a semi-closed shape off the coast of Australia and New Guinea. The maximum depth is 9174 m. The water area is 4068 thousand square kilometers. The sea has many coral reefs and is recognized today as the most beautiful in the world.

For many years, scientists believed that there was no life at such great depths. But thanks to the development of modern technologies, it was possible to get as deep as possible when studying the World Ocean and find out that even at the depths of the sea, life is simply in full swing. True, it is not yet possible to thoroughly study the fauna and flora of the Coral Sea.

The following types of marine life are known to inhabit the sea:

  • dolphins;
  • squid;
  • flying fish;
  • sea stars;
  • sea urchins;
  • sea turtles;
  • shrimps;
  • jellyfish;
  • crabs.

In the waters of the Coral Sea, scientists sometimes encounter very amazing creatures, which only fuel the belief in legends about sea monsters.

Banda is inferior to the Coral Sea by almost 2 km. Its depth is 7440 meters at its deepest point and is located in the Weber Trench. At the same time, the sea cannot boast of its enormous size - its area is only 714 thousand km².

Since this zone is volcanic, all the islands located in the Banda Sea are of volcanic origin. Sea waters wash the shores of Indonesia. Banda seawater is home to interesting representatives of marine fauna, including octopuses and jellyfish, dolphins, stingrays, sea snakes, nautiluses and sharks.

In the Atlantic Ocean, somewhere in the middle of Central and South America, lies one of the most legendary seas. It is ranked fourth in the ranking of deep seas, since at its maximum point its depth is 7090 m. And its area is 2777 thousand square meters. km.

The Caribbean Sea has a reputation for pirates and this is no coincidence. At the bottom you can see many sunken ships that date back to different eras. The search for ancient treasures is still ongoing between the depressions, the rights to which are disputed by many different countries.

The not-so-well-known Weddell Sea occupies an honorable fifth position. Its depth reaches 6820 meters, which is quite a bit less than that of the Caribbean Sea.

The sea is located near the coast of Antarctica, so most of the time its waters are covered with a thick layer of ice. In some places the ice is about 2 meters thick. But, despite the frozen state of the upper part of the waters of the Weddell Sea, life is bubbling under the snow cover. Popular representatives of the cold continent are whales and seals.

The Tasman Sea is located off the coast of Tasmania and also washes the shores of New Zealand. This is another sea that belongs to the Pacific Ocean. It lags quite a bit behind the Weddell Sea in terms of maximum depth. It is 6015 m. And the area of sea waters is 3336 thousand square meters. km.

The flora and fauna of the sea waters of the Tasman Sea is very diverse, since its location falls on three climatic zones:

  1. In the northern part, the flora and fauna are very similar to the flora and fauna of the Coral Sea. There are coral reefs. There are also many species of sharks in the Tasman Sea.
  2. In the southern part of the sea, the vegetation is richer, but the species diversity of fish is moderate. But more often you can see large schools of fish.

The Mediterranean Sea also belongs to the deep seas. This is an intercontinental sea, which is located between Asia, Europe and Africa. At its deepest point it reaches 5267 m, and its area is 2.5 million km. square. Since the coastline is indented, the sea is divided into many water areas. Today they have their own names, which have stuck since ancient times.

The underwater world of the Mediterranean Sea is very diverse due to the large area of water and different climatic conditions in its different parts. The waters are usually calm due to the comfortable climate on the coast, but there are also storms when the wind brings bad weather.

Deep seas in Russia

On the vast territory of the Russian Federation there are no seas that occupy leading places in the ranking. But the deepest sea in the country is called the Bering Sea.

Its maximum depth is 4151 meters. We can make a small comparison:

  • Sea of Azov - 14 meters.
  • Baltic Sea - depth 500 meters.
  • The Black Sea has a depth of 2258 meters.

In second place is the Sea of Okhotsk with a maximum depression of up to 3742. And in the next position is the Sea of Japan - 3044 meters. Of the inland seas of the Russian Federation, the Black Sea is recognized as the deepest.

Research of the seas and oceans is ongoing. And, perhaps, scientists will soon discover new depressions, which will affect the change in the rating of deep seas. But be that as it may, the World Ocean is still full of surprises and incredible discoveries. No one knows how many more secrets its blue waters conceal!

The deepest sea in Russia is the Bering Sea, named after the Danish-born Russian naval officer Vitus Bering, who explored this rough, deep northern sea in the mid-18th century. Before the adoption of its official name, the Bering Sea was called Kamchatka or Bobrov. Its average depth is about 1600 meters. In the deepest places, a depth of 4151 meters was recorded. About half of the area is occupied by spaces with a depth of more than 500 meters, while its entire area is more than 2315 thousand square kilometers.

The Bering Sea is not only the deepest, but also the northernmost body of water in Russia. The sea becomes covered with ice in September and is cleared only by June, while ice can cover up to half the area of this reservoir. In the coastal zone and bays, ice forms impassable fields, but the open part of the sea is never completely covered with ice. The ice in the open part of the Bering Sea is in constant movement under the influence of winds and currents, and ice hummocks up to 20 meters high often form.

Despite its depth, the Bering Sea is not even among the ten deepest seas in the world rankings. It belongs to the Pacific Ocean, separated from it by the Aleutian and Commander Islands, and along it runs a section of the water border between Russia and the United States. The Bering Strait connects the Bering Sea with the Chukchi Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

The shallowest sea in Russia

The shallowest sea in Russia is the Azov Sea. Its average depth is only about 7 meters, the maximum does not exceed 13.5. The Sea of Azov is the shallowest sea not only in Russia, but also in the world.

The Sea of Azov belongs to the Atlantic Ocean basin, is an inland sea in eastern Europe, connected by the Kerch Strait to the Black Sea, and is located between Russia and Ukraine. The Sea of Azov is not only the shallowest, but also one of the smallest seas in the world. Its maximum length is 380 km, its maximum width is 200 km, its coastline is 2686 km, and its surface area is 37800 sq. km.

The influx of river water into the Sea of Azov is abundant and amounts to up to 12% of the total water volume. The main influx is in its northern part, so the water there contains very little salt and easily freezes in winter. In winter, up to half the sea area is covered with ice, and ice can be carried into the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait.

In summer, due to its shallow depth, the Sea of Azov quickly and evenly warms up to an average temperature of 24 - 26 degrees, which makes it an excellent place for relaxation and fishing.

Man has always been attracted to the unknown. And the seas, as a component of this mysterious world, were especially alluring. Being part of the World Ocean, they vary in size, depth, time and method of formation, level of salinity, each with its own unique flora and fauna.

Depending on their location, the seas are internal, marginal and inter-island. And geologists divide them into those formed in those places where a large fault in the earth’s crust lay, and those located on continental shallows, which arose when the waters of the World Ocean flooded the outlying parts of the continents.

Scientists have not yet reached a consensus on the number of seas in the world. And the reason for this is the question of what is considered a sea. Should this concept include huge internal reservoirs, for example, the Caspian Sea and the Dead Sea, or are they still lakes? What to do with the part of the ocean that is limited only by currents?

Which sea is the largest and which is the smallest? Which is the deepest and which is the shallowest in the world? This always gave rise to millions of questions.

The largest sea by area is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is Sargasso, and its area is about seven million square kilometers. There are also distinctive features that are unique to it: the largest sea has no shores, and its boundaries are determined by the warm Gulf Stream; in addition, its waters are the most transparent, and the surface is covered

The deepest sea in the world is the Philippine Sea. As a Pacific oceanic interisland, it is located between the groups of Japanese and Philippine islands and the island of Taiwan. Taking into account its (maximum) eleven-kilometer depth, it broke all records. But those scientists who believe that the sea must necessarily have a shore (and Sargasso does not have one) argue that the Philippine sea is not only the deepest, but also the largest sea in the world. Its area is more than 5 million square kilometers.

Following the Philippine Sea in the ranking of the deepest seas is the Coral Sea. It is also located in and washes Australia, New Guinea and the maximum depth here is more than nine kilometers. And the main distinctive feature gave the name to the sea. Countless corals that make it difficult for ships to move, the enormous depth, and the high water temperature, reaching 28 degrees, are what make the Coral Sea stand out. What makes it special is the species composition of its inhabitants: mollusks - more than three thousand species, various fish - two thousand species, echinoderms, including poisonous ones that are dangerous to humans - three hundred species, sharks - in huge numbers.

But just as there is the largest sea, the deepest, so scientists have determined the smallest. In the ranking, the last place was taken by the Yellow Sea, which is both the smallest in area (416 thousand square kilometers) and the shallowest. It got its name from the yellow-colored streams that Chinese rivers carry to the sea, and the same-colored dust that storms carry, the force of which can even temporarily stop shipping.

In terms of salinity levels, the largest sea is far from the saltiest. Here the palm went to the Red Sea. It was this region, without an external influx of fresh river flows, that over many years concentrated the largest amount of salt in its waters. This made it not only the saltiest, but also one of the warmest with its stunning flora and fauna of the aquatic world.

The unlimited power of the sea, which gives us the means of survival and is capable of destroying, giving rise to the elements, has always awakened the creative principle in man. Fairy tales were written about the sea, paintings were painted, and poems were dedicated to it. And the secrets of the seabed will be the subject of study by the best scientists around the world for many years to come.
