Our world is full of secrets and mysterious events. Some of them seemed mysterious and mystical just yesterday, but today their secrets have been unraveled by scientists. We invite you to find out the secrets of some mysterious objects and phenomena that for a long time defied scientific explanation.

✰ ✰ ✰

1. Moving Stones of Death Valley

Rocks in Death Valley

Death Valley- this is nothing more than the bottom of the dry lake Racetrack Playa in the USA. And it is famous for a very interesting phenomenon - its moving stones. It’s as if an unknown force moves these stones from place to place from time to time, leaving only small grooves in the dried mud. The sizes of stones can vary, from several kilograms to hundreds of kilograms ( maximum up to 300kg.) No one saw these stones in motion, but it was obvious that the stones moved without the help of people or animals.

This phenomenon has given rise to many speculations regarding its nature. Almost all explanations for the phenomenon of moving stones boiled down to the influence of supernatural forces.

Since the middle of the 20th century moving stones Representatives of science began to actively study. Many scientific explanations for this movement have been proposed, but most of them have not been supported by anything. Thus, the only correct answer to the question “ What or who sets these stones in motion? “The scientists didn’t have it.

Heavy stone in Death Valley

The only more reasonable explanations were in which the stones could be driven by wind force at certain weather conditions, such as moisture on the surface of the earth. But it was difficult to imagine how the wind could move a 300-kilogram block.

In the 70s of the last century, a theory began to emerge according to which stones were driven by wind loads and helped to slide thin layer ice that could have formed from moisture during the rainy season. This theory was increasingly confirmed by scientific calculations and research.

In 2011, a group of young American researchers decided to study the moving stones in Death Valley, they installed a time-lapse camera, a weather station to measure wind gusts, and also installed GPS beacons by 15 various stones in Death Valley.

The most painful thing was the waiting. No one could know exactly when the stones would begin to move. It is known that stones can stand for years without moving. But they were lucky. In December 2013, the stones “floated” and their mystery was completely solved.

The reason for the movement of stones was heavy rain and snow, which left behind a 7-centimeter layer of water at the bottom of the lake. This water froze overnight into sheets of ice that, under the midday sun, broke up into large floating patches of ice.

In turn, the stones, drenched in rain, formed a small crust of ice on their surface overnight, which significantly reduced the coefficient of friction with the surface. Thus, ice floating on the surface, icy stones and light wind turned out to be those rare ideal conditions for the drift of stone blocks. The stones left trails in the mud below the icy surface. After a few months, these marks dried out, leaving only small grooves on the surface.

Many people like to solve all sorts of riddles. And those that have not yet been solved are especially attractive. Ciphers, riddles and encrypted public messages tease us with their intrigue: why is this message encrypted? what great secrets can it hide?

There are a great many similar mysteries, but we decided - in the spirit of the times - to compile a Top 10 mysteries of the world that have not yet been solved.

In first place, of course, is the Voynich manuscript. Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, The Voynich Manuscript is a detailed book, quite thick - 240 pages, written in a completely unknown language.

Still unknown! And there is not even any idea what kind of language this might be. Its pages are also filled with colorful drawings and strange diagrams, images of incredible events, as well as plants that are unlike any other. known species, which only adds intrigue to a document that cannot be deciphered. The author of the manuscript is unknown, but radiocarbon dating, as well as several examinations, have shown that its pages were made somewhere between 1404 and 1438. The manuscript has been called "The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World."

In second place is Kryptos, a mysterious sculpture covered in code., created by artist Jim Sanborn, which is located in front of the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia, USA. It is so mysterious that even the CIA itself could not fully decipher its code.

The sculpture contains four encryptions, and although three of them were deciphered, the code of the fourth has not yet been cracked. In 2006, Sanborn gave a clue that the first encryption contained clues to the fourth, and in 2010 he revealed another: characters 64-69 NYPVTT in the fourth part mean the word "Berlin".

In third place is the Bale cipher. The Bale Cipher is a set of three encryptions that purportedly reveals the location of one of the greatest buried treasures in American history: many thousands of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones. The treasure was originally obtained by a mysterious man named Thomas Jefferson Bale in 1818 during gold mining in Colorado.

Of the three encryptions, only the second was decoded. Interestingly, it seems that the key to the cipher is the American Declaration of Independence - amazing fact, given that Bale's name is the same as the author of the Declaration.

The decrypted text indicated the location of the treasure: Bedford County, Virginia, but its exact location appears to be encrypted in one of the remaining encryptions. Today, treasure hunters carefully scour (often illegally) the hills of Bedford County in search of this untold wealth.

In fourth place is the Phaistos Disc. The mystery of the Phaistos Disc is like an Indiana Jones story. Discovered by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in 1908 in the ruins of the Minoan palace at Phaistos, the disk remains one of the most famous mysteries in archaeology. It is made of baked clay and contains mysterious symbols that may represent an unknown form of hieroglyphs. It is believed to have been made sometime in the 2nd millennium BC.

Some scholars believe that these hieroglyphs resemble the characters of "Linear A" and "Linear B" writing, in other words, written languages, which were once used in ancient Crete.

Then what is the problem? The fact is that “Linear A” cannot be deciphered.

In fifth place is the encryption from Shaboro. This is actually the 18th century Shepherd's Monument in Staffordshire, England. If you look at it from afar, you might mistake it for a sculptural reproduction of Nicolas Poussin's famous painting "The Shepherds of Arcadia". But as soon as you take a closer look, a strange sequence of letters immediately becomes noticeable: DOUOSVAVVM, a code that has not been deciphered for more than two and a half centuries. Although the author of this cipher remains unknown, some believe that this code may be a clue left by the Knights Templar as to the location of the Holy Grail.

Many of our world's greatest minds have tried to decipher this code and failed, including Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

In sixth place is the so-called Tamam Shud case. The Tamam Shud case is considered one of Australia's biggest mysteries and revolves around an unidentified man who was found dead in December 1948 on Somerton Beach in the Australian city of Adelaide. Apart from the fact that the man was never identified, the matter became even more mysterious when a tiny piece of paper with the words “Tamam Shud” was found in a secret pocket sewn into the man’s trousers. This phrase translates as "finished" or "completed" and is used on the last page of Omar Khayyam's collected Rubaiyat poems. To add to this mystery, a copy of the Rubaiyat was soon found, which contained a strange code supposedly left by the dead man himself.

Due to the content of Omar Khayyam's poems, many believe that this message was a posthumous note of some kind, but it still remains unsolved, as does the case itself.

In seventh place is not an object - a signal. One day summer night In 1977, Jerry Eman, a SETI volunteer, became perhaps the first person to receive a message from another planet. Jerry Eman was scanning radio waves from deep space in the hope of accidentally stumbling upon a signal bearing the hallmarks of an intelligent race, when he noticed a jump in his measurements. And I came across it. The signal lasted 72 seconds - the maximum possible measurement duration that Jerry Eman's equipment and scanning range allowed. It was loud and apparently transmitted from a place no human had ever been to: the constellation Sagittarius, from a point near a star called Tau Sagittarius, 120 light-years from Earth.

Jerry Eman wrote the word "Wow!" on the original printout of the signal, which is why it was called the "Wow! signal". All attempts to recapture the signal failed, leading to great debate regarding the nature of its origin and its significance.

In eighth place are the so-called “Letters of the Zodiac”, but this has nothing to do with the signs of the Zodiac. The Zodiac Letters are a series of four encrypted letters believed to have been written by the famous Zodiac, serial killer, which terrorized the residents of San Francisco in the second half of the 60s and early 70s of the last century. The letters are written with icons, partly resembling letters, partly runes. There is no separation of words from each other.

The letters were likely written as a way to taunt journalists and police, and while one letter (or three fragments of it, to be exact) has been deciphered, the other three remain unsolved. The deciphered message suggests that in three months the Zodiac went from a ready-made Aztec priest to a victim of his own addiction to murder, tearfully begging to help him stop killing people (by putting him, for example, in a gas chamber). Additionally, Starliper's transcript ends with the sentence "My name is Lee Allen." By the way, the identity of the Zodiac himself has also never been established, the killer has not been caught, although the Zodiac murders have not been identified again since the 70s.

In ninth place are Georgia Guidestones. The Georgia Waystones, sometimes called "America's Stonehenge", is a granite monument erected in Elbert County, Georgia in 1979. The stones contain engravings in eight languages - English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian - and each contains ten "new" commandments for the "Age of Reason". They look like four steles, practically connected into a cross with a pillar in the middle and covered on top with a “cap” of a small square slab

Well, what’s mysterious here, most will ask. The monument does not contain any encrypted messages! Yes, it does not. Its purpose and origin remain a mystery. It was erected by a man whose identity has never been precisely established, and who was hiding behind the pseudonym R.C. Christian. Where he got these commandments from is also unknown, for no sources contain anything like this.

Of these ten commandments, the first is perhaps the most controversial: "Keep the human population below 500 million in eternal balance with wildlife." Many believe that this is a calling to reduce the human population to a specified number, and critics of the Guidestones have even demanded their destruction. Some conspiracy theorists even believe that they were created by the "Secret Society of Lucifer", calling for a new world order.

There is a version that these giant “letters” were also installed taking into account some astronomical considerations - hence, in fact, the name: “American Stonehenge”.

In tenth place are the Rongo-rongo boards. These mysterious wooden tablets with the writings of the inhabitants of Easter Island. It is currently unclear whether each symbol represents a separate word or syllable. Today, only about 25 “tablets” have survived in museums around the world. Traditionally, they are numbered with letters of the Latin alphabet, which, however, is not the only way to designate the “tables”, among which there is one staff, two inscriptions on the chest decoration of the reimiro, as well as an inscription on the snuff box and on the figure of tangata manu.

The “tablets” were discovered in 1864 by Bishop E. Eyraud, who claimed that these tablets were in almost every aboriginal house, but the islanders were practically unable to read them. Just two years later, almost all the signs that E. Eyraud saw died: either from his own hands, or during civil strife. It is believed that they were written in the Rapa Nui language. The last person from Rapanu who knew Rongorongo, Vike, died in 1866.

Since then, scientists from all over the world have been trying to decipher rongo-rongo. Significant contributions to the research were made by T. Bartel, Yu. V. Knorozov and N. A. Butinov, I. K. Fedorova, as well as many others. However, there is no consensus even in defining the type of writing, let alone specific readings. The famous theorist of grammatology I. Gelb believed that this was not writing, but only magical drawings, arguing that his signs were so similar to each other, differing only in small details, that an attempt to differentiate them encountered enormous difficulties.

Butinov and Knorozov prove that this is not pictography, but morphemic-syllabic writing. New Zealand researcher S.R. Fischer (in a 1997 monograph) believes that the tablets “for the most part reproduce magic formula fertilization, recorded in the later version of the creation of the world, and are based on the repetition of the producing formula: agent X united with agent Y and gave birth to object(s) Z." According to the ironic description of linguists K.I. and I.K. Pozdnyakov, "it turns out to be leapfrog , in which everyone copulates in the most incredible combinations."

How often does a person not dignify himself? And the king of nature, and the crown of creation, and homo sapiens. Is this really so? Both on planet Earth and in Space there are many unknown, secret and mysterious things. Man cannot unravel the secrets of nature, riddles ancient civilizations, to comprehend inexplicable and mystical phenomena. And I really want to know everything!

Doubles are a truly amazing phenomenon, especially when you consider that there are doubles not only in the flesh, but also ghostly ones. And sometimes they arise not only spontaneously, but also deliberately, by someone’s will, and then the boundaries between a ghost and a being in the flesh literally disappear.

Each of us at least once! I heard about monsters living in the depths of some reservoirs. The most famous of them, of course, is the mysterious animal from the Scottish lake Loch Ness. But it also has its own mysterious underwater creatures, encounters with which do not bode well. Some consider them to be relict lizards or fish preserved from ancient times, others consider them a play of the imagination or a consequence of natural anomalies. But what are these monsters really?

Along the pages of Slavic epics and legends, in addition to gods and heroes, dozens of amazing creatures, no less interesting, walk freely. But we know much less about them.

Probably many have heard about miraculous crying and bleeding icons. There are many legends about their miraculous acquisition and renewal. But there are icons that have very strange properties. Sometimes this is the work of human hands, and sometimes it is very difficult to explain the “anomaly”.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. For centuries, legends have been made about him. But the most mysterious of them is about the cursed treasure of the black prince Mafava, which to this day haunts treasure hunters.

At all times in Rus', people treated icons with respect. In almost every house, holy images hung in the most honorable place - in the red corner. In times of trouble and illness people turned to them for help. There are many cases where icons helped overcome adversity. However, studying healing power icons, scientists have discovered that the effects of some of them can be... dangerous to humans.

Even those who don’t particularly like forest walks know that a swamp is a disastrous place.
True, this does not bother mushroom pickers and hunters. After all, it is in the swampy area that there are a lot of berries and mushrooms, and hunting there brings rich trophies. The Tikhvin swamps on the Vepsian Upland, north of St. Petersburg, are particularly notorious.

We all know about the inexplicable miracles that the world is full of: Bermuda Triangle, Stonehenge, the mysterious popularity of Justin Bieber. But there are also hundreds of interesting mysteries that most people have never even heard of.

Mysterious fires in Sicily

Residents of the small Sicilian town of Canneto di Caronia have been suffering for the past decade from an inexplicable phenomenon that scientists cannot explain. All over the city, electrical appliances suddenly catch fire - toasters, refrigerators, even Cell phones. Even some objects that are completely unrelated to electricity (for example, mattresses) catch fire on their own, for some inexplicable reason. Due to the frequency and extent of fires, the town police had to abandon the theory of arson. The authorities blame the fires on either aliens or some kind of supernatural forces. But still no one can find out the truth.

The Phantom Barber of Pascagoula

The small town of Pascagoula, Mississippi is literally teeming with unexplained phenomena- from the strange noise of the Pascagoula River to the appearance of flying saucers in the area in 1973. But the most famous legend of the city is the still unsolved mystery of the Phantom Barber. It all started in 1942: a mysterious man entered the monastery of the Virgin Mary and cut off the hair of two sleeping girls. Over the next few months, the ghost appeared regularly on Mondays and Fridays, cutting curtains with a knife, using chloroform to sedate victims, and cutting off their hair. Ultimately, a certain William Dolan was arrested on suspicion of atrocities, but he passed a lie detector test and was soon released. Who the Phantom Barber really was remains unknown.

Man from Taured

In 1954, a plane landed at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. One of the passengers presented a passport issued by the state of Taured, located on the border between France and Spain. Of course, there is no country of Taured - and never has existed. However, the mysterious traveler's passport was covered with marks from previous trips. The police, not knowing what to do with the man, placed him in a hotel for the night. And the next morning, both the mysterious resident of a non-existent country and all his luggage disappeared without a trace.

The Disappearance of Sarah Jo

There are many mysteries associated with the ocean - endless, cruel and mysterious, and one of the most curious is the story of Sarah Jo. In 1979, Scott Moorman and four friends took a boat out of the port of Hana on the island of Maui. The weather was cloudless and promised excellent fishing, but a storm suddenly broke out and carried the fragile vessel into the ocean. When the storm ended, the boat and crew simply disappeared. No one was able to find traces of Sarah Jo and the five men for the next ten years. And only a decade later, a group of marine biologists discovered a boat on a small island - Taongi Atoll. There was a grave on the island, marked with a crude wooden cross, and in it were the remains of Scott Moorman. But what happened to the other four and who buried Murman? It looks like this will remain a mystery forever.

Methuen Water Demon

Ghosts in a house are usually just a figment of an overexcited imagination, but a strange story that happened in the town of Methuen (Massachusetts, USA) cannot be easily dismissed. In October 1963, a certain Francis Martin discovered a damp spot on the wall of his attic. As soon as Martin decided to take a closer look at the spot, a stream began to flow from the wall. ice water– and after a few seconds she disappeared. Over the next few weeks, the phenomenon was repeated repeatedly throughout the house, which is why Francis and his family had to leave their home and temporarily move in with his mother-in-law. However, this did not help - the same thing began to happen in the new house. As a result, the Martins returned home, and after some time the phenomenon stopped on its own - no one was able to give a reasonable explanation to this mystery.

Ayuda aluminum part

Every year, thousands of unusual finds are discovered around the world, which lovers of conspiracy theories immediately declare as evidence of anything. But the aluminum part discovered in Ayuda (Romania) in 1974 cannot be logically explained. This oddly shaped piece was found in the same layer of soil as several mastodon bones, making it at least 11,000 years old. But the fact is that until at least 1808, humanity was unable to either produce aluminum or make anything from it. Some believe that the mysterious piece served as the tip of some kind of primitive hunting weapon, but no one really knows what it was intended for.

Self-priming hoses

This may seem completely absurd, but for several decades now, no one has been able to explain why in 1955, quite suddenly, ordinary garden hoses began to “burrow” into the ground on their own throughout the United States. One of the first such incidents occurred in the town of Downey, California, in the house of a certain George di Peso. Di Peso's daughter was watering the garden and, turning off the water, suddenly saw how the hose began to bury itself in the ground! He managed to “burrow” almost 6 meters before George, running out of the house, cut the hose to stop its movement. Similar cases occurred in other states - Florida, Kansas, New York, Michigan. Some scientists, trying to explain what happened, suggested that the water pressure created a vacuum, which caused the hose to be “drawn” into the damp, thin soil. However, scientists could not repeat this.

Dayton Rock

One of the most unusual finds in the United States has attracted the attention of curious people since the 17th century. Dighton Rock, once discovered in the Taunton River, is a 40-ton boulder engraved with mysterious writing that is unlike any language that exists or has existed on Earth. Scientists have attributed these mysterious inscriptions to many people - some claimed that they were engraved by wandering Vikings, others were sure that these petroglyphs were of Phoenician origin, and recently a version was put forward that the signs were left by a Chinese expedition. Of course, the origin of the inscriptions ultimately could not be established.

Green Children of Woolpit

A long time ago, back in the 12th century, in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk, England, peasants discovered twin children, a brother and sister, in a field. The most surprising thing was that their skin was a sickly green color. The children did not speak English, were dressed in strange clothes and refused any food except green beans, which they ate greedily. Over time, the children's skin lost its greenish tint and they began to eat normal food, but where they came from remains a mystery.

Yellow Balloons from Cuba

During times cold war On both sides of the Iron Curtain, many strange events occurred, but perhaps the most mysterious was the discovery in June 1967, off the coast of Florida, wooden box with the inscription “Property of the USSR”. Without thinking twice, members of the Florida Coast Guard fished the box out of the ocean waters and opened it. The box addressed to the “Institute of Mineral Resources of Cuba” contained exactly 7 yellow balloons filled with some unknown gas. Scientists, having examined the contents of the balls, came to the conclusion that this is the most ordinary air. Decades passed, but no one was able to explain what this strange package was.

Few stories have the power to capture our attention like those that have not yet been solved. Ciphers, riddles and coded public messages tease us with their intrigue: Why is this message encrypted? What great secrets can it hide?

Go figure it out

Despite the efforts of the best historians, brilliant cryptographers and the most dedicated treasure hunters, history is full of mysteries that continue to baffle us to this day. Fictional stories, like those described in the book "The Da Vinci Code" and the movie "National Treasure" have nothing to do with these secrets from real life. Take a look at our list of the ten most mysterious unsolved mysteries and unsolved ciphers.

Voynich manuscript

Named after the Polish-American antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich, who acquired it in 1912, The Voynich Manuscript is a detailed 240-page book written in a completely unknown language. Its pages are also filled with colorful drawings and strange diagrams, images of incredible events and plants that are unlike any known species, which only adds to the intrigue of a document that cannot be deciphered. The author of the manuscript is unknown, but radiocarbon dating has shown that its pages were written somewhere between 1404 and 1438. The manuscript has been called "The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World."

There are many theories about the origin and nature of the manuscript. Some believe that it is a pharmacopeia describing various knowledge of medieval and early modern medicine. Many pictures of herbs and plants also suggest that it was something like a textbook for alchemists. The fact that many of the diagrams appear to depict astronomical phenomena, coupled with unidentifiable biological sketches, has even led some of the more sophisticated theorists to speculate that the book is of extraterrestrial origin.

But one thing almost all theorists agree on is that this book is unlikely to be a hoax, given the amount of time, money and meticulous work that went into its creation.

Kryptos

Kryptos is a mysterious code-covered sculpture created by artist Jim Sanborn that is located in front of the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Virginia. It is so mysterious that even the CIA itself could not fully decipher its code.

The sculpture contains four encryptions, and although three of them were deciphered, the code of the fourth has not yet been cracked. Maybe you can decipher it?

Bale cipher

The Bale Cipher is a set of three codes that purport to reveal the location of one of the greatest buried treasures in American history: many thousands of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones. The treasure was originally obtained by a mysterious man named Thomas Jefferson Bale in 1818 during gold mining in Colorado.

Of the three encryptions, only the second was decoded. Interestingly, the key to the cipher appears to be the American Declaration of Independence - a surprising fact considering that Bale's name is the same as the author of the Declaration.

The decrypted text indicated the location of the treasure: Bedford County, Virginia, but its exact location appears to be encrypted in one of the remaining encryptions. Today, treasure hunters carefully scour (often illegally) the hills of Bedford County in search of this untold wealth.

Phaistos disc

The mystery of the Phaistos Disc is like an Indiana Jones story. Discovered by Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in 1908 in the ruins of the Minoan palace at Phaistos, the disc is made of baked clay and contains mysterious symbols that may represent an unknown form of hieroglyphs. Today, the disk is one of the most famous mysteries in archaeology.

Encryption from Shaboro

Look from afar at the 18th century Shepherd's Monument in Staffordshire, Britain, and you might mistake it for a sculptural reproduction of Nicolas Poussin's famous painting The Shepherds of Arcadia. But look closer and you'll notice the strange sequence of letters DOUOSVAVVM - a code that has remained undecipherable for over 250 years.

Many of our world's greatest minds have tried to decipher this code and failed, including Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

Tamam Shud case

The Tamam Shud case is considered one of Australia's biggest mysteries, and revolves around an unidentified man who was found dead in December 1948 on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. All attempts to recapture the signal failed, leading to great debate regarding the nature of its origin and its significance.

Letters of the Zodiac

The Zodiac Letters are a series of four encrypted letters believed to have been written by the famous Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorized the people of San Francisco during the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s. The letters were likely written as a way to taunt journalists and police, and while one letter has been deciphered, the other three remain unsolved.

Zodiac's identity has also never been established, although no further Zodiac murders have been identified since the 1970s.

Georgia Guidestones

The Georgia Waystones, sometimes called "America's Stonehenge", is a granite monument erected in Elbert County, Georgia in 1979. The stones contain engravings in eight languages - English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian - and each contains ten "new" commandments for the "Age of Reason". Some conspiracy theorists even believe that they were created by the "Secret Society of Lucifer", calling for a new world order.

Rongorongo

Rongorongo is a system of mysterious signs inscribed on various artifacts found on Easter Island. Many believe they represent a lost writing system or proto-writing, and may be one of three or four independently invented writing systems in human history.

The signs remain undeciphered, and their true meaning - which some believe holds clues to the fate of the lost civilization that built the statues on Easter Island - is likely lost forever.
