The Dormition refers to the non-passing twelfth feasts, which are timed to coincide with the most important events in the life of our Savior, Jesus, and His mother, Mary.
The Assumption began to be celebrated many years ago, almost immediately after the death of the Mother of God - Christians, despite the persecution of their religion, revered the Holy One for Her deeds. The very word "assumption" signifies death, or else deep sleep, and evokes very few joyful thoughts. But the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, first of all, is not the day of the death of Mary, it is the feast of the reunion of the Son with the Mother in heaven.
When Jesus ascended to heaven, after the crucifixion and resurrection, Mary remained on Earth, and lived on earth for quite a long period of time. It is not known exactly how many years the Mother of God lived, because researchers give different numbers - someone says about 22 years, someone about 10, but it is known for sure that Mary lived her last years in the house of John the Theologian.
After the death of Christ, John swore to protect Mary from all adversity, so when the persecution of Christians began, he took the Mother of God to his parents in Ephesus, where she found her last refuge.
In the house of John, Mary prayed day and night that the Lord would have mercy on her and take her to him, but for a long time there was no response from him. The Mother of God often visited places where significant events took place in the life of Her Son. Also, the followers of Christ often came to her, who wanted to hear about the earthly life of their Savior, about which Mary joyfully told them. Above all, Mary became a mother to all the disciples of Christ and constantly cared for them.
And so, during one of the prayers, the Archangel Gabriel descended to Mary, who informed Her that in three days Her earthly life will come to an end. This news made the Mother of God very happy, but before her death, She wanted to say goodbye to all the disciples of Jesus, who at that moment were scattered all over the world. And at that moment a miracle happened - an unknown force transferred all those close to Christ to Mary.
Mary spent the next three days in prayer, waiting for her death, and when the time came, the room in which the Mother of God was lit up with a bright light. At the same moment, the Savior Himself descended to Mary, surrounded by angels, in order to personally take the soul of the Mother.
After the death of Mary, Her body was buried in a cave, which was filled with stone. The Apostle Thomas, who did not have time to say goodbye to Mary, was so upset that he was allowed to say goodbye to the holy remains, but when the cave was opened, the body was no longer in it. That same evening, all the apostles gathered at the table to honor the Mother of God, as She herself appeared to them and said that now She would be with them forever.
