Duphaston for delayed menstruation

How does the drug affect menstruation? It is based on dydrogesterone - progesterone obtained artificially. It is this hormone that replaces the natural hormone in a woman’s body, which is lacking, causing cycle failure and delays.

The medication does not threaten pregnancy in any way, but, on the contrary, maintains the level of the hormone progesterone, which has a positive effect on pregnancy. An abrupt cessation of dydrogesterone intake may threaten interruption.

Heavy discharge

After using Duphaston, excessively intense discharge may begin. There is nothing dangerous about this. The reason is an increase in the level of the hormone in the body. You can induce menstruation if there is a delay and stabilize the menstrual cycle with the help of Duphaston hormonal tablets, which must be taken in strict accordance with the schedule

Progesterone prepares the female body for pregnancy. Before the onset of menstruation, the hormone begins to be actively produced by the ovaries and, together with estrogen, forms an environment favorable for conception in the uterine cavity.

This happens approximately 14 days after the start of menstruation.

During this period, fluid accumulates, which makes the uterine mucosa loose and soft. This environment promotes the attachment of the egg to the uterine cavity.

If fertilization of the egg does not occur, then the accumulated endometrium, the inner layer of the uterus, is rejected. The accumulations come out in the form of menstruation.

However, often this coordinated work of hormones is disrupted, their deficiency occurs, which is the reason for the failure of the menstrual cycle. To improve the functioning of hormones, gynecologists prescribe Duphaston, which contains synthetic hormones similar to progesterone and estrogen.

It is important to know! When taking Duphaston, estrogen levels increase and then, as a rule, pregnancy occurs or the effect of the drug causes menstruation. To restore hormonal levels, it is necessary to complete a full course of treatment.

By restoring the balance of hormones, Duphaston normalizes the cycle and promotes the proper functioning of the female body.

Duphaston and amenorrhea: when to start taking the drug

Duphaston is widely used to eliminate long-term delays in monthly discharge. Amenorrhea - absence of menstruation for more than 6 months, is a symptom of various diseases. These could be problems in the endocrine, nervous or reproductive systems.

Amenorrhea can be true or false:

  1. False amenorrhea associated with genetic abnormalities of the female genital organs: they completely retain the hormonal functions of the ovaries, but at the same time, blood discharge can collect in the fallopian tubes, in the vagina.
  2. With true amenorrhea, ovulation does not occur, which is why there is no menstruation. In order to induce menstruation, Duphaston is prescribed (how to take the drug will be discussed later). It is able to regulate the onset of ovulation and, as a result, normalize monthly discharge.

Therapy with the drug in question begins at the first symptoms of this disease. The sooner a woman begins a course of treatment, the faster she will restore her feminine health.

Important to remember! The drug in question should not be prescribed to yourself. Only a gynecologist can prescribe the necessary dosage and course of treatment.

About how to take Duphaston correctly:

And what other safe ways to induce menstruation are:

Almost every woman controls her monthly cycle. But the delay of these long-awaited periods makes a woman worry in many cases. And then pregnancy tests come into play.

It’s good if the pregnancy was desired and it has come, there is a reason to rejoice. But most often the answer is negative.

Causes of delayed menstruation

If the delay in menstruation is small, up to 7 days, and you do not feel any discomfort or pain, then there is no need to worry. Such small delays occur for many reasons, for example:

  • stress;
  • sudden climate change;
  • avitaminosis;
  • taking certain medications;
  • change in food and water intake.

If you still feel something is wrong, you should immediately consult a doctor to find out the cause in order to rule out more serious problems.

A delay in such periods occurs due to the following reasons:

  • taking potent medications;
  • colds;
  • thyroid diseases;
  • endometritis;
  • genitourinary system infections;
  • medical abortion;
  • endometriosis;
  • obesity or sudden weight loss;
  • benign and malignant tumors of the uterus;
  • diseases of the appendages;
  • diabetes;
  • incorrect placement of the intrauterine device;
  • taking hormonal drugs such as Postinor or Escapelle.

To find out the real reason, a woman will have to undergo a medical examination and undergo a series of tests to determine the presence of hormones in the body that are responsible for menstrual bleeding.

Menstrual bleeding is an indicator of a woman's health. The correct functioning of the ovaries and the appropriate presence of hormones: progesterone and estrogen are responsible for regular menstruation.

Most often, the reason for a delay in menstruation is an imbalance in a woman’s hormonal levels, which, in turn, causes a malfunction of the ovaries.

Cycle restoration with Duphaston

To restore menstrual bleeding, gynecologists most often prescribe duphaston. This is a medical hormonal drug whose active substance is progestogen. In its structure, chemical and pharmacological properties, it is very similar to natural progesterone. The use of this drug is individual for each patient.

In most cases, to induce menstruation, duphaston is started in the second half of the cycle from days 11 to 25, 10 mg 2 times a day, for three months. How long you need to take the drug should be determined strictly by your doctor.

Most of the fair sex are trying to induce menstruation with duphaston without a gynecologist's prescription, on the advice of friends and acquaintances. In general, if it so happens that you started taking duphaston without consulting a doctor, but it turned out that you became pregnant, it’s not a problem. This drug is also prescribed when planning pregnancy and after conception to prevent miscarriage, as well as infertility. In this case, the child will not suffer, so there is no need to worry about the unborn baby. But still, before taking the drug, you should consult a gynecologist.

Along with the positive aspects of duphaston, there are contraindications and side effects. And only your attending physician can tell you how, when and how much to take the pills. If, after taking duphaston, menstruation is delayed again, it is necessary to undergo a medical examination to rule out a more serious disease.

Duphaston or Norkolut?

To induce menstruation, gynecologists also prescribe a drug such as norkolut. There is a lot of controversy about which is better than Norkolut or Duphaston for inducing menstruation? Let's try to sort this issue out.

Norkolut is a medical drug whose active ingredient is progestogen. The doctor prescribes taking this drug according to different regimens. The dosage of the drug is accordingly prescribed by the attending physician.

  1. According to the standard regimen, Norkolut is prescribed to take 2 tablets per day - morning and evening for 7 days in a row. Then you need to wait about 8 days. During this period, your period should begin.
  2. According to another scheme, you need to drink Norkolut 1 or 2 tablets per day for 10 days in a row.
  3. There are other regimens for taking this drug: take 2 tablets a day for 5 days in a row and wait for the arrival of your period for 7 days.
  4. When taking Norkolut continuously, to normalize menstruation, take tablets from the 16th day of the beginning of the cycle and end on the 25th day.

If after taking this drug menstruation still does not occur, you should contact your gynecologist again.

Both Duphaston and Norkolut are hormonal drugs. They are similar. That is, they perform the same functions. The selection of one or another drug for the patient is decided by the attending physician, taking into account all the characteristics of the body. After all, we are all individual.

Menstrual irregularities are a common problem in gynecology. If there is a delay of just a couple of days, you should not resort to radical methods, because a number of factors can provoke it: from stress at work to a common cold. But if the absence of menstruation has become chronic, or if there is a delay of more than 10-14 days, doctors will advise you to undergo therapy with hormonal drugs. One of the most effective is Duphaston. In this article we will tell you how to induce menstruation with Duphaston and what not to do.

How Duphaston affects the female body

The absence of menstruation is caused by a lack of progesterone, the hormone through which ovulation occurs. Duphaston is a synthetic progesterone substitute. The active ingredient in it is dydrogesterone. One tablet contains 10 mg of the substance.

There are a number of similar drugs, but in comparison with analogues, Duphaston has an inherent advantage: it does not convert into estrogen and does not have a corresponding effect on reproductive function. Dydrogesterone does not belong to the category of testosterone derivatives. Therefore, it does not have the typical side effects (that is, cases when increased hairiness appears, the voice becomes rougher).

When taking the drug, sudden changes in metabolic processes are excluded, there is no increase in temperature. Therefore, during a period of such hormonal silence, the effectiveness of determining ovulation by measuring basal temperature remains. Also, Duphaston does not increase (or increases to the slightest extent) the endometrium of the uterine cavity.

Indications for taking Duphaston

The most common reason why Duphaston is prescribed is the absence of menstruation. But normalization of the cycle is already, one might say, a secondary result, a consequence. The primary reasons why menstruation does not occur and which Duphaston treats include:

  • Difficulties due to uterine surgery. Hormone therapy is a reliable way to help adapt to changes in hormonal levels.
  • Severe estrogen deficiency. Because of this pathology, there are often cases of prolonged delays in menstruation, miscarriages, and dysmenorrhea. Duphaston normalizes the concentration of the hormone and relieves the consequences.

In addition to the fact that Duphaston can induce menstruation, the drug is also used for other disorders of the female body:

  • Treatment of endometriosis;
  • Treatment of infertility caused by insufficiency of the second (luteal) phase;
  • Relief from PMS symptoms;
  • Stabilization of the menstrual cycle, including delays;
  • Auxiliary drug for amenorrhea.

Depending on the purpose of taking the medicine, the daily dosage and duration of use are determined.

Routes of administration and dosage regimens

If you have been prescribed to take Duphaston to induce menstruation, then this should only be done orally (by mouth). The composition of the drug is quite balanced, it is perfectly absorbed into the blood through the walls of the gastrointestinal tract, and already 1-1.5 hours after administration it begins to interact with plasma protein.

The drug leaves the body three days after administration, along with urine. There were no cases of overdose or excessive accumulation even in women with kidney problems.

Under no circumstances should you take higher dosage pills in hopes of getting your period faster.

Reception should be regular, in small doses, at regular intervals. If there is a delay, this approach will help balance the concentration of progesterone in the blood and quickly rid the body of pathologies.

Dosages do not depend on the woman’s weight and age, but in each specific case they are selected individually, depending on the type and degree of the problem.

However, you cannot start taking hormonal medications on your own. You need to go to the doctor and get a prescription, because the wrong choice and dosage can only worsen the problem.

How to take Duphaston to induce menstruation

The main question that arises with this drug is: how to take Duphaston to properly induce menstruation. Only a doctor will give an exact answer after examining you and passing the necessary tests in your case. This is the only way to see the full picture of the processes in the body and make a decision on how to induce menstruation.

The treatment plan is determined by the doctor. It depends on the hormonal state of the patient, and on how often she sought the help of a doctor. The following options are possible:

  • In most cases, when there is a delay of more than 8 days, Duphaston is prescribed for 10 days of admission. For severe uterine bleeding that occurs at the beginning of the cycle or at the very end, the drug is prescribed for a maximum of 5 days.
  • If you have had a period failure caused by some external factor and hormonal imbalance, and you need to stimulate them, you need to start drinking Duphaston at the beginning of the second half of the menstrual cycle, that is, from 12 to 15 days. If you follow the required dosage and recommendations, your period will most likely begin on the 4th or 5th day from the first day of use (a similar effect is observed in 80% of women).
  • In case of hormonal deficiency, a woman must undergo a full course of treatment; its duration can reach 6-9 months. But with such a long-term use of an artificial hormone substitute, the opposite effect is observed: after some time, the body gets used to the constant maintenance of progesterone and stops producing it on its own. Therefore, it is better to take Duphaston on an ongoing basis for no longer than 2-3 months, after which you must take a break.

If you immediately saw the effect, your periods began to go regularly, you cannot immediately completely abandon Duphaston - this causes repeated long delays or, on the contrary, severe bleeding. Just gradually reduce the dosage, over time the body adapts, the hormonal levels stabilize and the drug will no longer be needed.

Duphaston for pregnant women

Separately, it is necessary to mention the use of Duphaston by pregnant women. In medical practice, most miscarriages occur due to a lack of progesterone in the blood of a pregnant woman. To increase the hormone for the purpose of normal childbearing, this drug is also prescribed. If Duphaston is used during a desired pregnancy, as a means to prevent miscarriage, the duration of use can even reach 5 months.

Side effects of Duphaston and contraindications

Like every other hormonal drug, you need to be extremely careful when taking Duphaston. It has much fewer side effects compared to other progesterone substitutes, but is by no means completely free of them. The following cases occur:

  • A small proportion of women who take the drug note such unpleasant symptoms caused by it: abdominal pain during menstruation, there are cases of dizziness, frequent headaches and similar neurological disorders.
  • Stimulating menstruation with Duphaston leads to heavy discharge in approximately 10-12% of cases. The reason for this is the rather ambiguous effect of the active substance on the mucous membrane and epithelium of the uterus. Indeed, the drug practically does not increase the epithelial layer, but this indicator is very individual.
  • Due to the active growth of the hormone progesterone in the blood, women may experience pulling, painful sensations in the breasts during menstruation. Due to the retention of excess fluid in the tissues, the mammary glands can become greatly enlarged while taking Duphaston.
  • The possibility of allergic reactions cannot be completely denied. Due to the active substance, high fever, moderate nausea, and possible rashes on the woman’s skin may occur.

Contraindications for taking Duphaston are actually the same as for other drugs:

  • Pregnancy. Before you start taking the medicine, do a follow-up test to make sure you are not pregnant. Even in the early stages, a surge in the hormone can negatively affect the course of pregnancy (except in cases where the doctor prescribed it for a lack of progesterone for normal childbearing). If, with the onset of pregnancy, you have been taking Duphaston for some time, you should not suddenly give it up - just gradually reduce the dose.
  • When breastfeeding. Opinions on this matter are contradictory, but the fact remains: the artificial hormone passes into the mother's milk and is passed on to the child. This is an unsafe process.
  • Combination with alcohol. There are no direct contraindications to taking Duphaston with alcoholic beverages. But due to the effects of alcohol on the body, the drug may be less absorbed and eliminated faster, thereby becoming less effective. Therefore, it is advisable not to combine them. If you cannot avoid drinking alcoholic beverages, try to drink them no less than 2 hours after taking Duphaston.

The drug has proven effective in the treatment of gynecological pathologies. But you cannot self-prescribe hormone therapy and resort to taking it. An incorrect regimen or missed contraindications can cause complications in the functioning of the endocrine system. Agree on the need for Duphaston and its dosage with your doctor.

Video: New information about Duphaston

The drug Duphaston is an analogue of the hormone progesterone. It is used in gynecology for the treatment of various pathological conditions that are accompanied by hormonal imbalances, in particular, when diagnosing a lack of progesterone in the female body.

General information

The main feature of the drug is that its chemical formula is similar in structure to the natural hormone progesterone. Its presence in a woman’s body is necessary because it participates in the process of biological reorganization associated with maintaining pregnancy.

The drug contains the progestogen hormone dydrogesterone. Its action is directed directly to the mucous membrane of the uterus, as a result of which many consequences from taking other synthetic hormonal drugs are eliminated.

Duphaston is produced by pharmacological companies in the form of tablets intended for oral administration. As a rule, they are white, rounded, biconvex in shape with beveled edges, and there is also a dividing line.

In addition to the main active ingredient dydrogesterone, the drug contains the following auxiliary elements:

  • magnesium stearate;
  • hypromellose;
  • polyethylene glycol;
  • corn starch;
  • lactose monohydrate;
  • Titanium dioxide and colloidal silicon.

If the effect of the drug does not interfere with thermogenesis, it is possible to measure basal temperature in order to stimulate ovulation. In addition, the product does not harm the functioning of the liver and the course of metabolic processes. During menopause, it helps ensure the positive effect of estrogens on the lipid structure of blood fluid. However, with the negative effect of these components on blood clotting, there is no effect of dydrogesterone on coagulation.

Duphaston is widely used in the treatment of endometrial hyperplasia, which can be caused by increased production of estrogen. The medicine is not a contraceptive. In addition, there is no negative effect on ovulation. After Duphaston, menstruation proceeds as usual, no cycle disruptions are observed.

At the same time, dydrogesterone has a positive effect when planning pregnancy.

It is worth noting that the product does not affect weight gain in any way.

Among the indications for prescribing the drug are:

  • infertility that occurs with luteal insufficiency;
  • uterine bleeding;
  • dysmenorrhea;
  • secondary amenorrhea;
  • disrupted menstrual cycle;
  • uterine fibroids;
  • pharmaceuticals;
  • polyps of the uterine cavity;
  • threat of miscarriage or habitual loss of the fetus;
  • polycystic ovary syndrome.

But the medication is also prescribed as hormone replacement therapy if there is a need to neutralize the increased estrogenic effect on the endometrium during the postmenopausal period.

Application

The duration of treatment and dosage of the drug depends on the diagnosis.

If your period is late

It is important to remember that the drug should be used only as prescribed by a specialist..

Moreover, in each individual case, the characteristics of the female body and existing chronic pathologies must be taken into account.

For the treatment of PMS and late menstruation, Duphaston is prescribed only if there are no existing contraindications.

Taking the drug begins on the tenth day of the period and ends on the 26th according to the instructions. Since women have different cycle lengths, only the attending physician can prescribe the drug, taking this into account.

The average single dose is 10 mg. Depending on the situation, you may need to take up to three tablets per day. The same time intervals between doses should be observed. For example, when using the drug twice, the interval between them should be 12 hours.

To restore the cycle and induce menstruation, it is prescribed course of treatment for a period of 3-6 months. If a positive effect occurs in a short time, then discontinuation of the medication is not recommended without consulting a gynecologist. This may cause more heavy bleeding. In any case, it is necessary to drink the full course, which was prescribed by the attending physician.

When treating irregular cycles with Duphaston, every patient is concerned about the question of when menstruation will begin. As a rule, the fourth or fifth day after taking the first tablet is considered normal. To get the maximum benefit from treatment with Duphaston, the course continues even after the onset of menstruation.

This medication is also prescribed for painful menstruation. The dosage regimen is the same as for the delay of critical days.

It is important to remember that you should not take the drug for more than 7-9 months.

When receiving progesterone from the outside, the body may stop producing the element on its own, increasing the risk of developing more serious problems.

During menopause

The peculiarity of the drug during menopause is its complex effect on the body. Most of the fair sex first learn about the benefits of Duphaston only during premenopause.

The onset of menopause occurs gradually. The duration of its first period is more than five years. It is during this period that early symptoms appear: scanty discharge and uneven development of the endometrium.

The action of the drug is carried out simultaneously in several directions:

  • restoration of hormonal levels;
  • neutralization of pain syndrome;
  • elimination of bleeding;
  • reduction in the volume of secretions;
  • normalization of metabolism.

The dosage of the drug is prescribed taking into account the degree of the pathological process. During premenopause, the medication is used at 10 mg in the morning and evening. During postmenopause, the course is selected individually for each patient.

After a one-time medication interruption, there is no need to take an additional tablet.

During pregnancy

Duphaston during early pregnancy is prescribed in the following cases:

  • high risk of spontaneous abortion;
  • endometriosis;
  • bleeding caused by dishormonal imbalances;
  • habitual miscarriage.

In later stages, the drug is taken in case of increased uterine tone, which can provoke premature labor.

To obtain maximum effect, the medicine must be taken strictly following the instructions. If endometriosis is diagnosed in the first trimester, one tablet is prescribed in the morning, lunch and evening.

If there is an increased risk of spontaneous abortion, the dose is increased to four tablets at a time. After this, the treatment regimen looks like this: 1 table. every 8 hours until the alarming symptoms disappear.

The effectiveness of taking Duphaston is most justified in the first three months of pregnancy. In the presence of brown spotting, the drug helps prevent bleeding at a later date.

If there is a risk of fetal rejection, then taking the medication is prescribed only by a doctor. The optimal dose during pregnancy is one tablet in the morning and evening, and it is recommended to take up to 20 weeks.

Other cases

The doctor must prescribe Duphaston when it is planned to transfer the embryo into the uterine cavity. If a patient is infertile, she usually experiences changes in ovarian function and a decrease in testosterone concentration. This tool plays an important role in embryo donation. Thanks to its properties, the uterus is prepared for implantation. When planning IVF, all patients, without exception, must undergo a course of Duphaston therapy. The tablets are taken three weeks before fertilization, as well as for 3 months after the procedure.

If difficulties arise when planning a pregnancy, the doctor prescribes Duphaston. As a rule, upon completion of the course of therapy, conception occurs immediately. You need to take the drug at a dose of 10 mg for six months. Application should begin from the 14th to 25th day of the menstrual cycle.

The effectiveness of the drug has also been proven for menopausal endometriosis. In some cases, the disease does not disappear even during menopause. The drug helps neutralize estrogens, causing endometrial cells to stop dividing. In addition, the tissues that have grown outside the uterus become thinner. And most of the patients noted that while taking the drug they felt better, and the symptom of abdominal cramps disappeared.

Therapy for follicular cysts also occurs under the supervision of a specialist. The treatment regimen for each patient is selected individually, depending on the characteristics of the woman’s body and the degree of the disease. The daily dose should not exceed 30 mg.

Tablets are taken one to three times a day at the same time.

The duration of therapy is 5-6 menstrual cycles in a row.

After vacuum aspiration, which involves sucking out the fetus with a special device, as well as abortion by curettage of the embryo, it is necessary to undergo a course of Duphaston therapy. Under its influence, the uterus is quickly restored and the menstrual cycle is normalized.

Limitations and side effects of hormonal drugs

A drug Duphaston is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • liver diseases;
  • individual intolerance to components;
  • low blood clotting;
  • pathologies of the cardiovascular system;
  • hepatitis and pigmentary hepatosis;
  • lupus erythematosus;
  • Rotor, Dubin-Johnson syndrome;
  • cancer of the uterus or mammary glands.

If your chest hurts, but there are no symptoms of cancer, it is still important to consult a specialist and undergo the necessary examination.

Side effects from taking medication are rare, but they should not be ruled out. Among the most common are:

  • nausea;
  • rashes;
  • short-term bleeding;
  • headache;
  • general malaise;
  • the appearance of edema;
  • disturbances in liver function;
  • thrush;
  • bloating.

If one or more negative consequences develop, the drug should be discontinued.
