Very original lamps are obtained from shaped and colored glass drink bottles. Several attempts made at one time to drill bottles ended in failure. The methods for drilling glass were some exotic ones and usually ended with a long crack in the glass from the point of drilling. But if I used a special glass drill, everything worked out. To drill a beautiful rectangular bottle of a good drink, a drill with a carbide insert was purchased (

Features of drilling a glass bottle

1. Direct the drill fixed in the electric drill strictly perpendicularly to the point of drilling the bottle and, with slight pressure, wait for the first glass crumbs to appear.

Glass drill

2. There is no need to drill at maximum speed, the drill is afraid of overheating.

3. Every 20-25 seconds, stop drilling and remove glass chips. At the same time, the drill tip will cool down.

4. When the tip of the drill passes through the thickness of the glass, the drilling sound will change slightly and the drill feed (pressure) should be reduced to a minimum.

5. After drilling through the thickness of the glass, rinse the bottle in running water.

6. When drilling, it is better to follow safety precautions - work with gloves, goggles and respiratory protection.

In this way, I successfully drilled several glass bottles with my own hands, from which original night lights powered by a 220-volt network were made.

How to drill a hole in a glass bottle when making a lamp. MK

I am often asked HOW to make a hole in a bottle to create a lamp base.

Here is a short master class on how I do it.

* E14 lamp socket

* electrical cord with switch

* Matte ENERGY-SAVING light bulb with E14 base, power 7-8W

* Perk for metal

* Drill for glass and ceramics

* Jar of water

I am often asked how to make a hole for a cord in a bottle.

To do this, you need to purchase a special drill for glass and ceramics at a hardware store. For the Hole, I use a #6 or #8 feather drill bit.

You will also need a drill or screwdriver.

Here are a few photos of the materials you will need.

Take the bottle and wrap it around the area where the hole will be located. masking tape 2-3 times.

This is what you should get:

First you make a hole, then you decorate the bottle, then you put everything together.

Now a few words about light bulb sockets.

There are two types of cartridges: “without a skirt” and with a “skirt”. We need cartridges with a skirt and a fastening ring.

Now we take a bottle cap (I wasn’t free, so I took a regular cap as an example).

We bring the cord through the neck of the bottle.

We connect the cord and the cartridge.

We pass the cartridge through the hole in the lid. The lower “skirt” of the cartridge will prevent the lid from falling off. For reliability, we drip some glue from the gun around the skirt and attach the lid to the skirt.

Close the bottle with a lid. All our cartridges are securely fastened.

Using the upper clamping ring, you can subsequently attach the lampshade to the socket.

Your imagination for decorating bottles and lampshades remains in your hands! Create and you will definitely succeed!

You will need

  • - air gun;
  • - drill with a diamond or hardened steel drill;
  • - turpentine;
  • - sulfuric acid;
  • - water;
  • - sand or clay;
  • - a template made of wood, foam plastic, glass, metal or other material;
  • - emery powder.

Instructions

Most quick way: Take with a well-charged cylinder. Stand a few meters away, aim carefully and shoot at the bottle. The ejected ball will pierce right through the bottle without breaking it. Please note that there will be two holes, and of a rather small diameter.

To drill a hole in a bottle required diameter, first prepare a device for securely holding the dishes, for example, a box in which they will sit tightly. Take a diamond drill bit for ceramics and drill very carefully, without pressing. Be sure to consider the cooling system. This can be constantly supplied water (an assistant will be needed here) or a specially prepared cooler. To make it, make a template from wood, foam plastic or other material, drill a hole of the required diameter in it, and attach it to the bottle with wax. Fill the hole with sanding powder (this can be obtained from sandpaper or abrasive wheel), mixed with turpentine.

To drill a hole in a glass bottle with a steel drill, heat it white and soak it in sulfuric acid before use.

To drill a hole large diameter, take a tube made of non-ferrous metal (aluminum, brass, copper, bronze) 2.5-5 cm long and use it as a drill. Attach a circle made of foam plastic, glass, wood, metal or other material of the required diameter to the glass; the tube will rest against it when drilling. Pour sandpaper moistened with water into the open end of the tube and drill slowly, at low speeds. Make sure that the sanding paste is always between the edges of the tube and the glass.

If you want to avoid drilling, use clay or fine sand. Thoroughly wash the surface from grease and dirt using acetone, alcohol or gasoline. Pour wet sand or clay, mixed to a dough-like state, in the form of a slide about 10 mm high. Make a funnel with a stick or other tool, and the diameter of the translucent glass inside the hole should correspond to the diameter of the desired hole. Melt lead, tin or other solder in a metal jar and pour it into the resulting hole. The hole will have smooth edges, but remember that this method is suitable for glass no thicker than 3 mm.

The Internet is full of tutorials on how to evenly cut the neck of a glass bottle and thus make an original glass or vase. But today I will tell you my method of how you can cut out a small window in a glass bottle or cut it lengthwise.

Will need

To do this, we will need a regular soldering iron with a thin tip, a marker to draw the outline of the hole, a glass cutter or a sharp metal object to mark the initial cutting point.

Cutting a window in a glass bottle

At the first stage, using a marker, draw the outline of the future hole on the glass.

Then in one of the places along the contour (preferably a straight section) using a glass cutter or sharp metal object a notch is made to facilitate the formation of a crack.

Next, the soldering iron warms up the place where the scratch was made.

The glass warms up gradually, in small areas a few millimeters.

After a crack has formed, the soldering iron tip moves further along the marker line. If the crack stops, you need to go back and heat the glass in the opposite direction.
I want to say right away that the work is painstaking and you need to be patient.
Having reached the corner of the cutting line, you need to carefully heat the corner so that the crack turns at the desired angle. This is the most difficult section, because internal forces acting in glass prevent crack rotation. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a smooth turn or a 90-degree angle. From my own experience I can say that quite often (about 25% of cases) the crack does not turn exactly where it should or even goes to the side. Therefore, I first heat the corners with a point, and then slowly rub them so that the crack goes away.

Because of the problems with corners, this method is not very good for cutting small holes in glass.

Another important stage– completion of the crack. It is better to connect cracks on a straight section, and not in a corner. Now I will explain why. The fact is that at a distance of about 3 mm from each other, the cracks very often stop moving and simply do not connect. Therefore, I simply warm up this area, and then gently tap the cut area from the inside of the bottle through the neck with a hard object.

The uncut portion of the glass breaks off, leaving jagged edges that then have to be carefully sanded off with fine sandpaper.

I also used this method to cut the bottle in half lengthwise. The only caveat is that I couldn’t drag the crack to the bottom of the bottle (probably because the glass was too thick), so I cut out the glass around the bottom.

I also experimented and cut out a large window on the entire side of the bottle - everything turned out great. But when I tried to cut out a small rectangular window, strong cracks appeared in two corners, so this experiment can be considered a failure.
This is a simple way to cut glass bottle along.

Hole in the bottle

I am often asked HOW to make a hole in a bottle to create a lamp base.
Here is a short master class on how I do it.

You will need :

* Wine bottle with wide neck and screw cap
* E14 lamp socket
* electric cord with switch
* Matte ENERGY-SAVING light bulb with E14 base, power 7-8W
* Perk for metal
* Screwdriver
* Drill for glass and ceramics
* Diamond needle file (recommendation forcon )
* Jar of water
* Scissors
* Glue gun
* Safety glasses (recommendation ntl )
* Protective mask

You will also need a drill or screwdriver.
Here are a few photos of the materials you will need.

Operating procedure :
We take the bottle and wrap the place where the hole will be located with masking tape 2-3 times.

Mark the drilling location with a cross. Please note that bottles have seams, it is best not to drill directly into the seam of the bottle. Move the drilling location 1-2 cm.

We begin the drilling process. We dip the drill in the water and try to hold the drill very evenly at medium speed and begin to drill. The most important thing is not to put pressure on the bottle under any circumstances. Act confidently, but not harshly.

Drilling will take 10-15 minutes. The pen drill will seem to scratch out the glass.

While drilling, regularly lower the drill into water and drip onto the drilling site.

After the drill has gone through, carefully drill the hole for some time, making light rotational movements. This will make the cut of the hole smoother.

Use a regular file or coarse sandpaper to sand the edge of the cut.
This is what you should get:

Now take the cord with the switch

And we pass it through the hole, pulling it up.

I would like to immediately make a reservation that if you plan to decorate a bottle, then the order of work should be as follows:
First you make a hole, then you decorate the bottle, then you put everything together.

Now a few words about light bulb sockets.
I use light bulb sockets with a base size of E14. A regular light bulb has a power of 40W or an energy-saving one 7-8W. I prefer energy-saving lamps, they do not heat up the lampshade.
There are two types of cartridges: “without a skirt” and with a “skirt”. We need cartridges with a skirt and a fastening ring.

These are NOT the correct cartridges, WITHOUT the “skirt”

The CORRECT cartridge with a “skirt” and a ring.

Now we take a bottle cap (I wasn’t free, so I took a regular cap as an example).

We make a mark on it with the middle. We measure the diameter of the cartridge and select the appropriate perk for metal.

What to do if there are no metal perks? I suggest this method: Punch holes in a circle with an awl, often and close to each other, and then saw through with utility scissors or a needle file.

The entire hole is ready and we begin to put everything together.
We bring the cord through the neck of the bottle.
We connect the cord and the cartridge.
We pass the cartridge through the hole in the lid. The lower "skirt" of the cartridge will prevent the lid from falling off. For reliability, we drip some glue from the gun around the skirt and attach the lid to the skirt.

Close the bottle with a lid. All our cartridges are securely fastened.
Using the upper clamping ring, you can subsequently attach the lampshade to the socket.

Attention, there are situations when the lampshade mount is larger in diameter than the fastening ring. What to do? It is necessary to make a gasket that equalizes the diameter of the lampshade and the diameter of the fastening ring.

Your imagination for decorating bottles and lampshades remains in your hands! Create and you will definitely succeed!
