I often hear from people that plastic threshold to the balcony bends when stepped on. Hearing about this, some clients even refuse to install such a threshold on the balcony and ask to come up with an alternative to it.

As you already understood, this article will focus on the strength of the plastic threshold on the balcony door, or rather, how to install it quickly and efficiently. And most importantly, it is not expensive, that is, without resorting to additional costs for materials.

Plastic threshold to the balcony

First, you need to know why the threshold flexes. It's not because it's plastic. This is from what install it. Here are two options. Either the installers are in a hurry, or they don't know how to do it right.

Yes, the plastic threshold is the same PVC window sill. It has some flexibility. But, if you put the window sill on a flat and solid surface, and step on it, then I assure you, it will not bend!

  1. Fast, high quality and cheap - threshold installation on point supports
  2. Long, costly, well, in general, "hemorrhoids", but also of high quality - installation of a threshold on a slab of mortar or polystyrene foam

How to install a plastic threshold on a balcony on turned supports?

This is the same method that I have been using consistently for many years.

Threshold on point supports. It looks simple, but there is a certain procedure that must be done. Let's start in order. But first, a small digression.

My personal recommendation is to install a plastic threshold only on the inside of the balcony door. From the outside, that is, on the balcony, there is no need to install a plastic threshold. Note that in Soviet houses, and not only where they put wooden windows, there were no thresholds on the balconies outside. A small protrusion made of brick or concrete was made, which was plastered and that's it. If you put yourself a plastic threshold on the balcony on the outside of the balcony door, then as a rule this threshold will be higher and wider than the old one, and even more so above the floor on the balcony.

And now attention is the most important thing. Imagine that when you exit the room to the balcony, you first normally step on the internal plastic threshold, which is usually equal to the length of your foot, then you step over the PVC door profile box itself, and then a threshold grows on your way, usually 15 cm wide on which the foot of a person does not fit. That is, you will have to cross this external threshold, and this will be more difficult than crossing the old Soviet threshold (especially for older people), and therefore you will have to stumble all the time.

In general, all this is written above in order to make it clear that installing a plastic threshold outside the balcony door is not advisable. And further, we will talk only about the internal threshold.

So, the procedure is the following. After installing a balcony door, or a balcony block (as a rule), the turn of the threshold comes. Let's skip the details on how to measure and cut off the threshold. It's in another article. Next, we take the following set of tools:

  • Level 400 or 600 mm, depending on threshold width
  • Elbow 90 degrees, also 400 or 600 mm, again depending on the width of the threshold
  • Construction knife
  • Hammer
  • Threshold trim (always remains when trimming the threshold)

First of all, we take a cut from the threshold. As a rule, its length is almost equal to the removal of the threshold. We slip this piece under the door frame, for example, from the left edge, and put wooden kolobashki, which are pricked with a construction knife and a hammer under this piece so that it is pressed against the frame. As you understand, then instead of trimming there will be a threshold that will rise in the same way.

After our trim is pressed to the bottom of the door frame, that is, it fits tightly under the frame, you need to set this trim to a horizontal level, since the threshold will then be set. And accordingly, put the kolobashki under the middle so that there is no deflection. Thus, the left row will be exposed. Then, all the same must be done with each row. If the threshold is less than one meter, then four to five rows are enough.

Now that all the point supports are set, you need to make sure that they are set at the same level, that is, in one line. To do this, we take our plastic threshold, previously cut off and lay it on point supports. We check the evenness with a level or square. And also check the deflection. To do this, you need to stand on the threshold and walk a little on it. Then, making sure that everything is level and solid, we remove the threshold, moisten the surface with water and apply mounting foam to the anchor points so that we get a pattern in the form of a lattice.

This is how the threshold to the balcony is set. Yes, the most important thing is not to forget to put a load on the threshold.

How to install a plastic threshold on a balcony on a slab of mortar or polystyrene foam?

The principle of a mortar plate is clear to everyone, so I will not focus on this. I will only repeat that this method requires a lot of time, which you yourself understand - no.

Styrofoam is also difficult. Here it is necessary that the platform under the threshold is flat. Yes, it's hard to get the right thickness. That is, again, expensive, difficult and long.

Other types of threshold to the balcony

How to install a plastic threshold on a balcony, you now know. It remains to talk about other types of thresholds to the balcony, or rather thresholds from other materials. Such as:

  • Laminate
  • Tile
  • Linoleum
  • Parquet

But, the best threshold to the balcony is when it's not there. That is, when the floor in the room goes straight to the balcony door, and is flush with the floor on the balcony. In this case, they knock down a concrete threshold, raise the floor on the balcony, redo the floor in the room, well, in general, this is a large-scale event.

Well, I think it would not be bad to make your own video on how to install a plastic threshold on a balcony. I'll post it soon.

In most apartments there is a level difference between the floor and the balcony block. This is due to the design of the installation of remote external structures in the design of buildings. The step to the balcony is the result of design decisions, and it is one of its elements.

An example of the design of the steps to the loggia

In order to install an open balcony, it is necessary to fix a remote reinforced concrete slab. They do this in several ways. A solid slab in the form of a console is fixed inside the load-bearing wall or beams and brackets are installed in it. A slab is laid on top of them under the balcony structure. Thus, the level of the balcony will be higher than the floor slab.

As a result, a step is formed inside the room. In panel houses, the balcony block, in which the door and window opening are installed, serve as a counterweight to the balcony slab.

If you try to cut down the concrete under the balcony door, the integrity of the entire counterweight plate will be violated. That is why the supervisory services do not recommend dismantling the resulting threshold, moreover, they may regard such an action as detrimental to design solutions.

An example of finishing a balcony step with tiles

The threshold to the balcony performs a number of other functions, prevents moisture and cold from entering the room.

Balcony step design options

The level of the height of the drop, therefore, the steps, depends on the project of a particular building, the material of the load-bearing walls, the method of fixing the balcony slab. The solution to the problem of the height difference between the floor levels in the room and the balcony block is a beautiful step design.

Examples of the design of balcony steps

The threshold can be decorated as follows, it can be:

  • wood finish;
  • laminate;
  • linoleum;
  • floor tiles;
  • window sill plate.

But first of all, you need to prepare the basis for finishing. It is made in several ways.

How to make a step:

  1. If there is a high threshold to the balcony, then the steps are made of brickwork, then it is plastered:

Without the use of brickwork, with a small difference, it is enough to install the formwork and pour it with cement concrete mortar.

  • take measurements;
  • bars are cut out on them for the manufacture of the frame, do not forget to take into account the height of the OSB plate (subtracting it from the height of the frame);
  • depending on the width of the threshold, reinforce it in the middle;
  • then the frame is sheathed with a cut-to-size OSB board;
  • a perforated metal corner is attached to the edge.

When choosing a finishing material, the steps are guided by the general style and decoration of the room.

Balcony step finishing option

Take into account:

  • What are floor coverings made of?
  • window openings, window sill plate;
  • joinery, for example, doorways.

The threshold should naturally fit into the overall design concept of the room.

Laying tiles

Before proceeding with the installation of tiles, it is necessary to carefully die out the threshold. As a basis, a cement-concrete pouring of a step is more suitable.

An example of a decorated step with tiles

Tile installation:

Separately, it is worth dwelling on the lateral junctions. They can be decorated during laying with a tiled corner by inserting the edge of the tile into it. Or cover them on top with thin corners.

Wood finish, laminate

Wood remains perhaps the most spectacular material. Especially when doors and windows are made of the same material. The threshold is made from type-setting boards or a solid array. Depending on the depth of the steps of the balcony, loggia. In this case, it is better to make the base from a bar sheathed with OSB.

An example of finishing steps with laminate

Sequence of work:
  1. Perform measurements, which make the markup of the material.
  2. Then, using a jigsaw, cut out blanks of the desired size.
  3. Try on, fit.
  4. Boards are sanded.
  5. Attached to the frame with wood screws. Hats can be hidden with putty.
  6. The last stage, opening the surface with paints and varnishes.

The edge of the nut is made with a beveled edge. A metal corner is installed on a straight slope, choosing it to match the main color. Laminate is laid in a similar way.

Cut to size, fit, fit. Despite the fact that the laminate is attached to the thorn-groove lock, it is better to additionally fix it with small self-tapping screws or studs with small caps, then install the corner.

Linoleum decoration, window sill slab

When it is supposed to lay linoleum in the room, then this step can be covered with the same material. It is enough to cut out the desired piece, cover the threshold with it, attaching it to construction glue. Then set the corner.

An example of laying linoleum on a balcony step

As a material for decorating side junctions when using a laminate, wood, linoleum, a thin wooden lath (glazing bead) of an angular shape is suitable.

Finishing seams with wooden glazing beads

The window sill is used when they want the step to visually merge with the balcony block. Now they install plates with anti-vandal coating, so they are resistant to abrasion.

Finishing example with plastic tiles

Options for finishing balcony steps with different materials

Since the window sill on one side already has a rounded shape, the corner is not installed. The side surfaces are made out with plastic corners. See in the video: how to make a threshold to the balcony of linoleum.

The bottom of the steps is puttied, painted or wallpapered. You can make a fairly spectacular nut with your own hands by choosing one of the options. Sometimes you can find non-standard design: mosaic, tile pieces. A step made of round logs of a cut tree, filled with epoxy resin, looks very interesting. Such sills act as an element of the decor of the room.

For facing the nut, it is necessary to prepare the surface, outline the contours, measure the length, width and height. Then cut the tile into pieces of the desired size. Tile cutting is carried out using a special machine.

After that, proceed to the implementation of the formwork, which will require wooden bars. Next, prepare a cement-sand mortar (in a ratio of 1: 3), pour it into the formwork and lay it with tiles on top. To harden the solution, take at least a day. After that, remove the formwork and process the seams with grout. You can’t step on the finished threshold for 2 days, the structure must gain strength.

We make a threshold to the balcony from a laminate or put a plastic one

Nowadays, the balcony is no longer exclusively an auxiliary room in the house. It can serve as a bedroom, guest room or kitchen. Therefore, repairs in this part of the apartment should be carried out in good faith, using modern technologies and materials. When you are engaged in arranging a loggia, an important stage of work is flooring and threshold design.

Some owners of apartments with balconies even dismantle this step between the room and the auxiliary room, mistakenly believing that it is not needed. However, the balcony threshold performs several useful functions. Firstly, it makes the balcony structure more durable. Secondly, it keeps the room warm. When the door to the loggia is located in line with the floor, cold air easily enters the room. Protecting this area from low temperatures will not be easy. Therefore, the best option is to slightly raise the door. Thus, the threshold acts as a heat-insulating element.

How to install a threshold on a balcony

Let's remember plastic - this is an inexpensive and versatile material from which you can make a threshold. If the step is low, then you can make it out of plastic. Such a threshold looks especially good if you put a new white metal-plastic door.

The advantage of this material is speed, you can cope with the task in a couple of hours. But there are also disadvantages - fragility, so in a year you will have to return to this issue again and think carefully about what material to make the balcony threshold this time.

We make a threshold of plastic:

  • you need to mount guides in the wall - self-tapping screws will do;
  • you need to attach a plastic threshold to the fasteners - this is so far only a fitting;
  • you will need construction foam, just try to blow out the foam not abundantly, taking into account the fact that it increases in volume by 2 times;
  • immediately set the threshold and press it well;
  • fix the threshold with self-tapping screws. Ways 2 - open (the fastener will be visible) and closed;
  • once the foam has set, you can check your work. Just be prepared for the fact that the plastic threshold will not last long.

Threshold dismantling

Sometimes there is a need to combine a loggia with an adjoining room. In this case, the threshold is removed. In panel houses, this can lead to damage to the load-bearing wall, so it is better to coordinate such redevelopment with the appropriate organization.

Dismantling the balcony threshold

In the event that the threshold is not very high, the floor level on the loggia can be raised. This is especially convenient if additional thermal insulation or installation of a "warm floor" system is required. First, a screed is made using cement mortar, the surface is leveled. Remember that before this the floor is well cleaned of debris. In this way, we obtain a flat floor surface without elevation.

Before proceeding with the dismantling of the balcony threshold, you need to pull out the doors and disassemble the balcony box. When the threshold is removed, the block is put in its original place, but its lower part is no longer required - instead, a wooden rail or a special metal plate is placed.

However, it is necessary to take into account some of the nuances of dismantling the threshold on the loggia. The folding mode of opening the balcony door will no longer work. The tightness of the junction of the door with the floor surface may weaken. It is necessary to carry out high-quality insulation of the balcony door. If your balcony is located on the first floor of the house, it is better not to remove the threshold. The wooden step on the balcony can be dismantled on its own, and it is recommended to entrust the dismantling of the concrete threshold to professionals.

Door sills become a kind of barrier to cold air and drafts, protect the room from dampness. They also perform a soundproofing function. The step at the entrance to the loggia or balcony is by no means a useful element that connects the room with the outer extension. Therefore, you should responsibly approach the issue of installing and finishing the balcony threshold. If the repair work is carried out taking into account all the requirements, your apartment with a balcony will become even cozier and more comfortable.

Simple and affordable pouring construction of cement mortar

Cement-sand mortar at the base of the balcony threshold is the simplest and most affordable solution. Arrangement will require some work to prepare the space in front of the door.

If initially the balcony door is without a threshold (see photo), then you need to clear the space between the slopes from the walls to the door frame from the old flooring. The base under the threshold must be free of dust and dirt, repeatedly primed for optimal bonding.

Formwork is mounted on a prepared base with a dried primer. A wooden board with a thickness of up to 3 cm will suffice. The solution is prepared in a standard proportion of cement and sand (1: 3). The liquid glass added to the solution will increase the water-repellent properties of the threshold.

Cement-sand construction requires time to dry - at least 5 days. Only after this period the outer formwork is removed and executed
finishing the threshold of a balcony door with materials suitable for the general interior, for example, stone, tile, laminate or carpet.

French balcony glazing with a sliding door design will require the arrangement of a filling threshold in several stages. At the initial stage, only half of the mixture is poured, on top of which a metal mesh is laid, tying the sheets together with wire. Only after that use the rest of the solution to fill the threshold of the desired height.

The height of the nut is adjustable depending on performance requirements.

Functional purpose

A properly designed nut performs several tasks:

  • strengthens the window structure, sometimes provides it with additional strength (it is not advisable to remove it when it is);
  • protects the room from rain water;
  • provides thermal insulation;
  • facilitates exit from the room to the loggia;
  • provides convenience;
  • aesthetically connects the floor coverings of the balcony and the room.

When the front door is installed at floor level, cold air will easily enter the room. The threshold will serve as an obstacle, and heat will remain in the room.

If the doors are located a little higher (the floor levels of the balcony and the room do not match), then the difference can be easily and accurately drawn with a threshold

This is especially important if additional insulation was carried out or finishing was carried out with any materials.

Do not worry that the threshold or doorway will create difficulties when moving. If the family has children or elderly people live, then the step should be made as low as possible. Usually, the correct solution is not to remove the nut, but to correct and finish it.

flood threshold

The easiest to arrange is a threshold filled with cement-sand mortar. To arrange it, it is necessary to free the space in front of the balcony door from the floor covering, if any, remove the laminate or parquet boards so that the space between the slopes and from the wall level to the door frame can be filled with mortar. The base on which the threshold will be installed should be cleaned of building dust, primed twice with an acrylic or silicate primer, which will completely bind the remaining dust and in the future will not allow the filled threshold to peel off from the base.

After the primer dries, it will be necessary to equip the formwork. In this case, one board, 2.54 cm thick and of the appropriate width, screwed or pressed with heavy objects flush with the wall in which the balcony door is installed, will be enough. The solution is prepared from a mixture of building sand and cement grade 200-400. The proportion is standard: 1 part cement / 3 parts sand. To increase the setting speed and give the threshold additional water-repellent properties, liquid glass can be added to the solution.

The threshold can be arranged at any height, but if it is high enough, expanded clay gravel or broken red brick can be used as a filler, which is laid in one layer in the resulting niche and poured with mortar on top.

After setting the solution, it is allowed to gain strength, that is, such a threshold should be used no earlier than 5-7 days after pouring. When the solution is completely set, the outer formwork is removed, and the threshold itself can be finished either with laminate or linoleum, or lined with ceramic tiles or decorative stone.

If the door is wide, more than 80 cm, or the design of the balcony door is sliding (French doors), then the threshold should be filled in two stages.

First, pour half the thickness of the mixture, then lay a masonry mesh (metal) on it, tying the individual sheets together with steel wire, and then pour the threshold to the required height.

Threshold made of laminate

Compared to a wooden threshold, laminate is a more profitable option. And since the flooring as a laminate is quite popular, this type of threshold will be a good solution without compromising the interior. The best option if you want to completely change the flooring and immediately make a threshold.

Laminate balcony threshold

To create a threshold from a laminate, you will need:

  • wooden bars;
  • saw;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • hammer;
  • wedges;
  • liquid Nails;
  • corner for decorating the edge of the threshold;
  • laminate.

Before starting the main work, you need to remove the work surface from various debris, if possible, then eliminate the bumps. As with a wooden threshold, you need to make a frame. After the design is ready and fixed, you can start laying the laminate. This material is recommended to be fixed on liquid nails, and the joints should be coated with a gyro-insulating compound. This will prevent the penetration of moisture into the structure. After installing the laminate, a decorative plinth is fixed to the edge of the threshold. The threshold is ready.

The choice of material for the threshold depends on the height differences, the availability of funds, and the appearance. If the idea of dismantling the concrete lift came up, first you should contact the specialists. Perhaps, in this case, it is unacceptable to dismantle the original threshold. In the case of old wooden structures, you can carry out the dismantling yourself without fear.

Metal profile threshold

In some cases, when it comes to arranging the threshold of a door with a complex (not rectilinear) shape, it is necessary to use a metal profile used for mounting drywall and waterproof drywall with a thickness of at least 10 mm. Preparation of the base, with the exception of cleaning it from excess debris and dust, is not required.

According to the pattern, or markings on the floor, a metal profile is mounted to the base, screwed to the concrete base with self-tapping screws into a dowel or anchors, then vertical racks of the required height are set, fastened to the profile by means of fasteners and metal screws, and then the top horizontal, symmetrical to the bottom, circuit. It should be borne in mind that the threshold will experience a constant load, so the number of fasteners and the frequency of their location during the arrangement of the threshold should be increased by at least 3 times, compared with the recommended frequency of their use when facing plasterboard walls or ceilings.

For additional thermal insulation, the space between the concrete base and the upper plasterboard threshold panel is filled with mineral wool or expanded clay gravel. If the threshold to be installed has curved lines, the facing of the end surfaces should be made of ordinary (non-moisture resistant) drywall 5 mm thick, pre-soaked in water to give it flexibility. After installation, the end part of the threshold should be puttied with oil-adhesive putty to impart water-repellent properties.

Other types of materials

Other materials can be used to finish the threshold on the balcony door:

  • Natural tree. Eco-friendly, keeps heat well. It looks appropriate in interiors made in eco or country styles. Working with it requires certain skills and abilities. The main disadvantage is the high cost.
  • Laminate. It is a cheaper analogue of wood, while it has good aesthetic and thermal insulation properties.
  • Linoleum. One of the most inexpensive and easy-to-work materials.
  • Cork. Environmentally friendly material that gives originality and exclusivity to the interior. It has excellent thermal insulation properties. The main disadvantage is softness and instability to damage.

So, it’s easy to give a finished look to a balcony door. Carefully think over the design solution, and then carry out the work correctly - as a result, a room with a balcony will become even more cozy and comfortable.

The purpose of the balcony sill

Not every resident of an apartment building fully understands why this strange “step” is needed between the balcony and the adjacent room. She actually has several appointments.

  • Strengthens the entire structure of the balcony. If there is already a threshold, it can only be corrected if desired, but in no case should it be removed.
  • They provide additional thermal insulation, since mounting foam alone, as a rule, is not enough to keep the heat in the room, especially if the balcony is not glazed and not insulated.

For reference!

If the balcony door is installed at the same level as the floor, then cold air can be blown into the apartment through the gap, and it will be extremely difficult to isolate such an area. Therefore, heat can be saved if you lift the door a little and build a transition.

  • Eliminate heat loss through the places of foam, in which cold bridges can form.
  • Protect from moisture caused by external factors. Rainwater that has fallen on an unglazed balcony can flow into the room through the cracks, and the threshold can prevent this.
  • They provide a smooth transition that reduces the chance of tripping over the threshold structure and makes the transition through the balcony door more comfortable.
  • Give the door to the loggia or balcony aesthetics, increase visual appeal.

Setting the threshold has many nuances. Accordingly, how to make the threshold on the balcony correctly, the task is quite important. Transitions may differ in their size, height, material of execution and shape. Most often they are rectangular, as they are easier to install and use.

Old and reliable tree

The tree can be used both at a high threshold height, and at a low one, the difference will be only in material consumption. Such designs are also often found in apartments, like all previous options.

Wood has many advantages over other materials, among which are the following: wood is easy to work with; the material does not let the cold through, especially if such a threshold is additionally insulated with mineral wool; wood is a natural material, which means it is environmentally friendly.

For work, you may need: wooden blocks (their height and width must correspond to the dimensions of the future structure); chipboard sheet (it will act as the top of the threshold, such material is quite durable and able to withstand heavy loads); carpentry tools (hammer, hacksaw); ordinary household drill (you can take an impact drill, it will be more convenient and faster); dowels, corners (to strengthen the structure), self-tapping screws.

First you need to make a frame, which will be a frame of bars according to the size of the threshold. You can adjust the size with a hacksaw. The bars themselves are fastened with self-tapping screws, the corners need to be strengthened with metal corners.

Also in each corner you need to make holes through which the frame will be attached to the floor. Once the frame is sized to fit, lay it in place.

Use a pencil to mark its location. Then, using a drill, you need to make holes on the floor for the dowels. The next step is to fix the frame to the floor.

Once everything is securely fixed, you can proceed to install the chipboard sheet. Mark it according to the size of the threshold and saw off the excess. Then fasten the sheet to the frame with self-tapping screws. The threshold is almost ready, it remains only to ennoble and give a beautiful appearance.

As you can see, making the threshold to the balcony on your own is a simple task. You can use any of the above options, it all depends on the distance between the door strip and the floor in the room, as well as on your preferences.

All work will take no more than one working day, but as a result, your balcony will take on a finished look.

The threshold to the balcony is a very important and necessary thing that most owners forget about.

If there is no threshold, then from under the door leading to a balcony or even a glazed loggia, it will constantly blow out, which means that it will be cold indoors in winter. You can correct the situation if you do the installation of the balcony threshold yourself.

Before starting work, you need to familiarize yourself with the design of the thresholds and select the appropriate material

Pay attention to the threshold in your home, if you see that the step to the balcony is high enough, then this is even good.

Thus, during the construction of the house, the structure of the balcony was strengthened. It is not necessary to demolish such a threshold, it is even dangerous, but to correct the situation and make it attractive - everyone can do it.

It also happens that the apartment does not have a threshold to the balcony, then you can do it yourself. Do not give up this small but very necessary attribute.

Brick use

Brick is used where the distance from the door frame plank to the floor in the room is quite large.

The use of cement mortar in this case can be quite expensive, and the brick will easily eliminate these discrepancies.

Initially, you need to prepare the floor surface. Remove all bumps and old coating, then apply putty.

It is better to take one that, after drying, leaves a very rough surface, so the bricks will hold better.

The next step is to prepare a mixture of cement and sand. They are taken in a ratio of one to three, respectively. For better adhesion, you can add a little gypsum mixture. Then we start laying bricks.

The first layer must be made of cement mortar, and the first row of bricks must be laid on it. If you decide to tile the threshold, then you need to leave a space from the top level of the bricks to the level of the bottom bar of the door. Also leave space at the ends.

After the bricks are laid out, cover them with a layer of cement mortar and level with a spatula. This will prepare the surface for tiling.

After the mixture has dried, finishing can be done. Laying tiles or just laying linoleum is the business of the owner. In any case, the durability of such a design will be ensured.

wooden threshold

A source: obustroeno.com

Wood is a wonderful material that is both beautiful and environmentally friendly. True, in terms of design, such a threshold is not suitable for every balcony. For example, in combination with plastic trim, it will not look too harmonious. But in the event that the balcony is lined with clapboard, the materials will successfully overlap.

  • wooden plank;
  • wooden corner;
  • bars for laying under the threshold;
  • perforator;
  • dowels;
  • screws;
  • screws or nails;
  • protective composition for wood processing;
  • varnish or paint.

Let's get to work.

  1. We prepare the surface.
  2. We make a frame from the bars. Its thickness should be such that the desired height of the threshold is obtained (but do not forget to add the thickness of the board there as well).
  3. We drill holes in the bars and in the floor, then we insert dowels into them, and we drive screws into them. Thus, we get an even, strong and stable frame.
  4. We put a board on top of this structure and fix it around the perimeter with self-tapping screws or small nails. This should be done close to the edges.
  5. Using liquid nails, glue the wooden corners to the appropriate places.
  6. We process our threshold with a special antiseptic.
  7. Finally, cover with paint or varnish. This should be done in several layers, and each subsequent one is applied only after the previous one has dried.

So we considered all the ways of how you can make a threshold near the balcony. Now you know how the installation differs, depending on the material used, and you can consciously choose what is better to work in your particular case.

In conclusion, we want to say about the benefits that such a threshold brings. In addition to aesthetic functions, it also performs protective. In particular, it becomes an additional barrier to the penetration of cold from the balcony, and also does not release heat from the room. So don't waste your time and money. Moreover, both of which are needed here very little.

What are they needed for

There are three main areas of use:

  • Application in design. New styles, technologies, materials sometimes form unique interiors, where several floor coverings can be combined on the area of one room. It is the sills that allow you to carefully close the border between them.
  • Joints between rooms. Such places are most vulnerable to mechanical impact. Especially if materials are joined on them or the difference in floor height between rooms is blocked. In addition, flooring manufacturers set a limit on the laying area without a threshold. This is due to the technical features. Any material can change its linear dimensions under temperature differences. In such cases, thresholds are needed.
  • Anti-slip corner profiles. Used for stairs lined with tiles or natural stone.

The sills perform the following functions:

  • Aesthetics. Close technical gaps and boundaries between materials.
  • Safety. If the joint is not closed with a protective strip, then over time the edges of the material will bend. They can trip and fall, resulting in serious injury. Security is also ensured by corner anti-slip profiles. Their use on marble or tiled stairs is more than justified.
  • Fixation. With the help of thresholds, the edges of the floor coverings are firmly fixed and hidden, which ensures their long service life.

Considering the scope and functions that sills carry, it is impossible to overestimate their importance for high-quality floor finishing. . If you are interested in how to lay porcelain stoneware on the floor with your own hands

Method 2. Filling the solution

This method is appropriate if the threshold just needs to be slightly raised. To a height that is less than the height of a brick (6.5 cm). But in some cases, it can be resorted to, regardless of what height it is supposed to mount the threshold. This method is quite popular, and, according to many builders, it is more convenient and faster than the previous one.

From building materials we need:

  • cement-sand mixture M-150. For these purposes, it is perfect, moreover, it is relatively inexpensive. At the current exchange rate - ≈100 ₽ - 1 bag (50 kg);
  • penetrating primer and brush for its application;
  • formwork board. Its thickness should be ≈25 mm, length - ≈10 cm more than the width of the doorway (10 cm on each side), and the height - the one that is needed (depending on how high the finished threshold should be);

Here is a small list of tools that will be useful to us when working:

  • a bucket (metal) in which the solution will be mixed (or other suitable container);
  • drill mixer;
  • putty knife;
  • construction grater for surface grinding.

The work on filling the threshold occurs according to the following scheme:

  • foundation preparation. It is necessary to remove all small (and large - respectively) debris, cut off the protruding mounting foam, apply a layer of penetrating primer to the surface;
  • formwork installation. To do this, the board must be installed across the passage with an edge - and securely fixed. Any heavy object is suitable for fixing: bricks, a bag of mortar, and so on;
  • preparation of the solution strictly according to the instructions;
  • fill. If the layer is thick enough - 10–15 cm, then construction debris can be placed in the thickness of the concrete - fragments of bricks or ceramics, crushed stone can also be used. If there is an opportunity to lay reinforcement - great! Nobody says to knit a full-fledged reinforcing belt. You may not link anything at all. Moreover, it is not necessary to use exactly the corrugated reinforcement that is usually used when pouring. As we have already mentioned, improvisation would be quite appropriate: any metal products will do - even pipe cuts and other old plumbing fittings, even a metal mesh, even fragments of old equipment. In general, any metal will do. This makes the design more durable and reliable;

  • after the top layer has dried, grout with a construction float (as, indeed, in the first case).

We'll talk about finishing later. In the meantime, we are waiting for the third option to resolve the issue.

What to choose from

Threshold configuration depends on its function

The variety of thresholds for the floor is due to the combination of those difficult functions that it has to perform simultaneously. Depending on the installation location, not all of the properties supplied by the manufacturer may be constantly required, but, nevertheless, they must be taken into account when choosing.

Important features, according to which elements such as floor thresholds are selected in the interior of an apartment, come down to several main groups:

  • the size of the closed slot (wide clamping part or narrow);
  • profile, flat or under a level difference (the edges of adjacent floor coverings may form a step);
  • combination with the main tone of the floor (the top of the plank can also contrastly separate materials, emphasize the doorway);
  • load intensity (service in places of the main passages or especially unloaded parts of the room);
  • appearance (the same materials have a different pattern of the surface that is open to the eye, they can be made with a hidden fastening, anti-slip pads).

Each manufacturer claims a long service life of their product. Keep in mind that plastic, aluminium, wood and brass floor sills will look different if the next repair is not done soon.

Plastic

Each material has its own advantages in certain operating conditions. Polymer compositions have proven themselves in rooms with high humidity (kitchen, bath, bathroom). This category also includes a more flexible variety - rubber frames.

Curvilinear borders are created by a special flexible edging, which evenly lies on the complex figured edges of the floor coverings. The light reflected from its curly line will not show signs of violence during do-it-yourself installation.

Additional options for plastic models of the threshold - a variant with a cable channel. The insulator protects the owner from accidental exposure to electric current, a dense polymer - wiring from mechanical damage.

Wooden thresholds non-budget option

Wooden interior thresholds can harmoniously complete the rectangle of the doorway or merge with the textured tone of the laminate flooring.

This type of nut is quite expensive and is more often used to complete the design of a wooden floor in a country residence. If a flexible connection is required, a cork threshold is used.

For a laminate under a tree, they take MDF components that are suitable in color and pattern.

Metal strips press linoleum well and close the joints

The most popular threshold for the floor because of its strength, reliability in operation, durability and pleasant appearance.

They make metal thresholds from brass and aluminum, less often from stainless steel (the hardest option). More plastic aluminum floor strips during installation will easily close minor irregularities, tightly press linoleum, carpet, tiles. It is essential that a sufficiently soft metal, when pressed, will not damage the base material.

To give a varied and noble look, the aluminum alloy is anodized to look like bronze, gold or silver. Such colors are suitable for almost every floor material, favorably emphasize the basic tone of the floor with their frame, and complete the atmosphere.

The sprayed layer reliably protects the aluminum threshold formed by the film from aggressive chemical influences.

Some installation points

Rigid threshold profile is produced in standard lengths. In each individual case, the material is cut to size with a hand or circular saw. With visible screw heads, it is desirable to cut the bar for the doorway so that it looks symmetrical - in equal parts from each edge. For more information on how to set different types of thresholds, see this video:

Some manufacturers produce flexible thresholds in rolls, so they can be purchased by the total footage, cutting in place on their own.

Simple flat thresholds are mounted without technical difficulties on liquid nails.

Screws for surface mounting may be included in the sales package. They are screwed through until the cap is completely immersed in the countersink hole. In some modifications, the hats can be hidden under linings, including non-slip composites.

Another type of fastening is locks for hidden fixation. In this case, the hollow part of the lock is firmly fixed to the base, and it is enough to align the protruding element of the cover plate with the groove and press until it clicks. For more information about the flat nut, see this video:

With any method of installation, the tightness at the edges must reliably prevent the penetration of water under the closed space. This can provoke the development of putrefactive processes under the floor materials.

Dismantling

Working on the threshold

Removing a threshold is much easier than building a new one, but there are some nuances here. It is not at all difficult to dismantle wooden products, but if it was made of brick, then everything is much more complicated. You need to do everything as carefully as possible, as you will have to use a hammer and chisel. If these tools do not help, then it's time to put the punch into action.

IMPORTANT!!! In places near the wall, it is better to work with a grinder with a stone attachment. If the disk does not reach in some places, then we are already trying to work with the previously mentioned hammer and chisel

Finish options

It goes without saying that a floor covering should be laid on the threshold of concrete or brickwork. Although, perhaps, it should be put on a wooden threshold. In any case, all options are a good basis for laying any topcoat.

So, we will consider several options for the development of events.

Option 1. Tiling

The tile fits perfectly on brickwork or on a concrete base. Here's what you need to do to properly tile the threshold:

  • apply a primer to the surface to increase adhesion;
  • while it is being absorbed - calculate the location of the tiles and take the necessary measurements. Tiles should lie evenly and symmetrically;
  • prepare tiles for laying. To cut the tile evenly, use a tile cutter or an ordinary grinder;

  • prepare tile adhesive according to the instructions on the package;
  • apply the finished composition to the back of the tile using a notched trowel;
  • so that the grouts go smoothly, use special plastic cross stitching. The width of the seam should be from two to four millimeters;
  • fill the grout with a fugue, which will protect the material from moisture and give the work a finished look.

Keep in mind that the presence of seams when laying tiles is a must (!) This is not just a decorative element. These seams prevent cracking and peeling of the material from the work surface due to temperature changes. In fact, this is the same delatation gap. Simply put, it is the backlash that allows the tiles to expand freely as the temperature rises.

If desired, you can also tile a part of the wall under the threshold - depending on your design decision and the ability to translate it into reality. Read more about working with tiles in another article: "". If you have a question: “What does the wall have to do with it?!”, I will answer: the principle of working with tiles is almost always the same, regardless of the plane in which the action takes place. Enough about tiles. Now let's move on to the next option.

Option 2. Laying the flooring

The second option can be summarized by calling it "laying the flooring". But floor coverings are different. First, let's analyze the finish of the threshold with a laminate. The algorithm of actions in this case is as follows:

  • necessary measurements;
  • cutting laminate according to measurements. As a rule, one board is enough. For cutting, you can use both a hacksaw and a jigsaw. The main thing is not to cut off extra centimeters so as not to spoil the board;
  • fixing the laminated board to the surface using liquid nails;
  • corner fixing. These are usually sold in hardware stores in the flooring department.

In addition to laminate, other flooring can be attached to the threshold. For example, linoleum carpet or vinyl tiles (art vinyl). This option is even simpler, since the named materials are quite soft and can be cut with an ordinary clerical knife. In addition, you won't need a large piece, and at the hardware store you can choose a small piece from the leftovers (cuttings), which come in various sizes, and are usually sold at a discount. The smaller the piece of flooring in terms of area, the greater the discount on it. Some are sold for as little as 20% (or even less) of the cost per square meter of roll coverage.

If you decide to use linoleum/carpet, simply take measurements and then cut off the excess from a piece of flooring according to these measurements. Then simply glue it to the surface with linoleum and carpet adhesive. But if you have liquid nails or other glue at your disposal, use it. After all, buying a bucket of special glue (even a small one) - just to stick such a small piece - is impractical. When the coating is glued, fill in a corner that will protect the protrusion from damage during operation.

Installation of a plastic threshold on point supports

PVC plastic(the same one that is used for window sills) is the simplest and most inexpensive solution when making a threshold for a balcony door. There is an opinion that it bends, which means it is not suitable for installation on surfaces that are supposed to be stepped on. But this happens only if the installation technology is violated. There are two installation methods:

  • on point supports– the cheapest and fastest;
  • on a slab of mortar or polystyrene foam- More costly and labor intensive.

Let's consider the first method in detail. It is convenient in that it does not require preliminary leveling of the base and the cost of mixtures or slabs. Installation of this design can be carried out in a few hours. Sequence of work:

  1. Clean the base from dust, dirt, remnants of mounting foam.
  2. Take measurements, make a preliminary sketch.
  3. From a plastic window sill, cut the blank of the future threshold with maximum accuracy so that the joints between the threshold and the adjacent walls are minimal.
  4. Prepare wooden bars with a cross section of approximately 10 * 5 cm and a height equal to the distance from the floor to the lower edge of the threshold.
  5. Lay out the bars in a row, first on the left and on the right. Check level.
  6. Then lay a few more rows (5-6 rows are enough for a nut length of up to 1 m). When deviating from a strictly horizontal line, file or build up the bars.
  7. Try on the threshold, once again check the level of the entire structure.
  8. Remove the workpiece, apply mounting foam, but not too much, because when it hardens, it expands and can displace the structure.
  9. Carefully press the threshold against the supports.
  10. Put a weight on top.
  11. After solidification, go through sealant or liquid plastic at the junction points, close the ends with plugs.

Installing a plastic threshold on a pre-erected slab is carried out in a similar way.

Using brick as a base

In the case when there is a significant difference in heights in the room and the space of the balcony, an additional support for the mounted door frame is required. And the choice in favor of brickwork will be very visible. After all, the implementation of this kind of design will allow you to firmly place the door and create the necessary development for the subsequent decoration of the doorway. The implementation of this type of construction work will require the implementation of the following operations, taking into account which a strong and durable threshold based on brickwork will be formed.

Namely:

  • The relevance of the implementation of the threshold will be detailed measurements, which will allow in the future to position the door frame and correctly remove a significant difference in the two rooms.
  • Next, you should practically and efficiently clean the existing area, under the location of the brick, by removing the dried mortar or other dirt. After that, a primer is applied and sprayed, for uniform adhesion of the cement-sand mortar and the existing base.
  • When performing brickwork, it is worth using a cement-sand mortar, which will allow you to combine each of the placed bricks and create a reliable bond with the existing concrete base.
  • It is worth noting that the masonry should be made of brick, which is not subject to excessive absorption of moisture and the accumulation of air inside itself, and the existing holes will allow you to create a solution for heat exchange in the subsequent operation of the threshold.
  • Having completed the laying of bricks and evenly distributed the mortar, it is worth worrying about the surface finish. And here you can resort to the use of tiles or decorative cool mass. Due to this, the threshold will acquire an unusually attractive and practical look.

It will also be important to complete all the necessary tools and building materials, due to which it will be possible to start the required construction work. . List:

  • Mixer, mixing the adhesive base or cement-sand mortar;
  • Perforated corner, if necessary, creating an ideal threshold contour;
  • Adhesive mortar, or cement-sand mixture;
  • Spatula, for uniform distribution of the solution or adhesive composition;
  • Hammer, for uniform placement of bricks;
  • Gypsum or, for the final finishing of the threshold;
  • Level, creation of a flat surface and control of the threshold masonry;
  • Roulette, derivation of sizes and required threshold parameters.

In this case, it will be possible to qualitatively complete the threshold on the balcony, without worrying about the lack of tools or inappropriate quality control of the resulting solution. The created threshold will be able to perfectly perform its functions and change the options for operating the balcony room.

It is worth noting that when performing a brick balcony threshold from the outside, you need to take care of additional sealing. This will be necessary in the case of open balconies and the possibility of moisture ingress.

Dimensions and other characteristics

As for the dimensions in which the sills are presented, the width lies in the range from 20 to 150 mm. Length - from 900 to 2700 mm .

Another important factor is the method of attachment. There are two in total:

  • Open. Such panels have prepared technical holes for fastening. Dowels are included.
  • Closed. This method is carried out by gluing the nut or fixing it on the dowels through a special profile. It can be removable or integral with the main decorative part. There are some nuances during installation, but the result is worth the time spent.

Therefore, when choosing thresholds, a number of conditions should be foreseen. First of all, for joining what materials they will be used.

Cork products

Smooth transition from one floor to another

Cork sills are made in the form of a cork slat, which has excellent shock-absorbing qualities. Therefore, very often such floor covering elements are called compensation rails.

They can be represented by a variety of shapes, for example, zigzag or semicircular. The cork threshold is glued to the floor at the junction of the finish coating, without protruding above it. As a rule, it is used as a single-level threshold for parquet.

Thresholds from MDF

MDF products are mainly used to hide laminate joints. They are profiles laminated to match the wood, which are affected by humidity.

They are distinguished by low cost and a short period of operation - much less than that of wooden or plastic sills.

Thresholds made of wood

Wooden thresholds are made from natural solid wood and are perfect for decorating parquet floors. In this case, the threshold should be selected to match the coating and from wood similar to the main finish.

To mount such a product, you should use special rails that are attached to the floor at the junction, and only after that the threshold itself is already fixed to them. The only nuance that needs to be taken into account when buying such a decorative element is that a wooden product requires constant care - grinding, varnishing or a special composition. The price that a wooden threshold has is quite high, provided that you are offered quality material.

Plastic sills

Bending radius up to 60 cm

Plastic thresholds are made of polyvinyl chloride, have an extensive range of colors and are used to mask the joints of laminate, linoleum and carpet.

The advantage of such a product lies in its flexibility, which allows the use of plastic thresholds for finishing curved joints. Single-level and multi-level PVC thresholds are inferior in cost to other products for decorating the floor.

Wooden structures for decorating a balcony ledge, what is special

The wooden threshold is distinguished by a high level of reliability - this is the main thing. The design almost does not allow cold and moisture to pass even without additional insulation. Everyone can make a wooden threshold with their own hands using a technology similar to the technology for creating a plasterboard structure with a metal profile at the base.

An environmentally friendly, beautiful and durable threshold made of wood is equipped with wooden bars, the dimensions of which must correspond to the dimensions of the structure intended for use. Additionally you will need:

  • chipboard sheet for the top;
  • a set of carpentry tools;
  • drill;
  • corners;
  • self-tapping screws.

If you need to change the plastic threshold to a wooden one, then the process begins with the dismantling of the old structure and preparing the surface for arranging a new one. The next step is to create the frame. To do this, use bars, adjusting them to the size of the threshold with a hacksaw. Finished bars are fastened together with self-tapping screws, fixing the corners with metal corners. In each corner, holes are additionally prepared for mounting on the floor.

The wooden frame is laid on the prepared area, its location is marked with a pencil, after which holes are drilled for the dowels. The next stage is the installation of the frame on the floor with the fixing of the chipboard sheet in the upper part with self-tapping screws. The finished threshold is lined with suitable materials.

In conclusion, we note that the threshold is indeed an important condition not only for the aesthetic appearance of the area in front of the balcony, but also for keeping the heat in the room with the onset of cold weather. . You can equip the threshold with your own hands from improvised materials, ranging from an old plastic window sill to wooden slats

You can equip the threshold with your own hands from improvised materials, ranging from an old plastic window sill to wooden slats. The main thing is to correctly calculate the dimensions of the structure, taking into account the distance from the floor to the door strip and think over the material for insulation, which increases the performance properties of the finished product.

It is also important to consider options for finishing the finished structure. The threshold should be in harmony with the interior of the room, despite the fact that most of the time it will be masked by curtains.

plastic threshold

Plastic as a material for balcony thresholds is very common. The plastic used is the same as in window sills, only in this case PVC will play the role of a step. Some, when dismantling and finishing loggias, may have left parts of plastic window sills that can be used.

Balcony threshold made of plastic

This material, used in creating the threshold between the balcony and the room, has significant advantages:

  • low price;
  • protection of the room from cold air and moisture ingress;
  • installation of a plastic threshold can be done by anyone, without certain skills;
  • beautiful appearance.

The main disadvantage can be called fragility. This is due to the use of mounting foam during installation. Over time, the plastic begins to bulge and crack. Another disadvantage is the fact that the installation of a plastic threshold implies small height differences.

  • plastic window sill;
  • a special gun with a balloon of mounting foam;
  • sealant, acrylic or silicone and gun;
  • saw for cutting the window sill to size;
  • building level.

Installation begins with cleaning and leveling the surface on which the plastic threshold will be installed. The next step is marking and cutting out the desired shape of the threshold. Next, evenly apply mounting foam to the finished surface. Put a cut window sill on top, evenly press down on top with a load and leave to dry for a day. After the foam dries, it is necessary to cover the gaps between the window sill and the wall with a sealant to prevent moisture from entering. On the edges of the plastic structure, if possible, you need to put on plugs.

original tile threshold

Ceramic tiles are durable and easy to maintain. If you choose this type of material as the finish of the nut, then in this case you cannot do without the preliminary construction of the base, which can be done in several ways.

Brick base

This option is justified if the difference between the floor and the doorway is large enough (not less than the height of the brick). Please note that a layer of leveling mixture and finishing tiles will be applied to the brick - the height of the threshold in the finished form should not block the door. Main stages of work:

  1. Clean the base as thoroughly as possible. The smoother the surface, the easier it is to lay the brick row.
  2. Prepare a cement-sand mortar in the proportion of 3 parts of cement to 1 part of sand. You can use purchased mixtures that you just need to dilute with water in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
  3. Distribute the mortar over the base, lay out the first brick. Then apply the mixture to the end side of the brick so that all the seams are filled. Put the next block and so on. Usually, one row is enough for the construction of the threshold.
  4. Apply a layer of mortar to the entire upper surface of the brick row and level.
  5. When the mixture dries, moisten the surface with a little water and work with a foam trowel. Thus, an almost perfectly flat surface is obtained.

Pouring the base with mortar

When you need to get a threshold of a smaller height than the size of a brick, it is rational to use this method. Many masters prefer it in most cases because of the ease of implementation. Work is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Prepare the base, remove debris and dirt, cut off excess mounting foam. Treat the surface with a primer.
  2. Install formwork. To do this, you need a board that is slightly larger in width and height than the size of the threshold - you just need to press it tightly against the wall with any heavy objects.
  3. Prepare the solution according to package directions.
  4. Place the filler in the cavity of the future step: broken brick, stone, crushed stone.
  5. Carefully pour the solution so that it fills the entire volume. Align with a staple, remove excess.
  6. Moisten the surface after a few hours and rub with a grater.

Choosing and laying tiles

Among the wide variety of finishing materials, you can easily choose the option that suits the overall style and design of the room. For this site, it is not necessary to buy expensive brands. Residual and even defective batches with different shades or chips will do - such material can be bought at a significant discount. Tastefully selected details of different textures and colors, mosaic look original. The main thing is not to choose glossy surfaces - they can be very slippery.

Tiles can lay out not only the horizontal surface of the step, but also the wall under it, as well as the floor area adjacent to the door. It all depends on the taste of the owners and the characteristics of the room. Laying is done in the following sequence:

  1. Carefully take measurements, calculate the quantity, draw a layout diagram. Symmetrical laying looks better and neater, especially on large slabs. In the middle there should be whole parts, on the sides - equally trimmed.

    Asymmetry is conspicuous

  2. Cut tiles with a tile cutter or grinder.
  3. Lubricate each part with special glue and lay on the finished base in accordance with the diagram. Insert crosses between the tiles - so the seams will turn out to be even and the same. Control the laying process with a level.
  4. After hardening, remove excess glue, fill the seams with grout.

How to make the right choice

Before starting the selection, a number of questions should be determined:

  • Lenght and width. For non-standard sizes, you may need to order a bar. The width of the threshold should overlap both sides of the joint material.
  • The profile and design are selected depending on the type of joint and coating. For example, with strong differences in the floor, you can use a corner bar, and with an even coating, a T-shaped straight sill.
  • Material. The most popular type is metal profiles with a laminated surface for natural fibers. The versatility of this fastener and the range allow it to be used with any type of coating.
  • Color. There may be several options here. The classic choice is the color of the baseboard, door or flooring. But there are other options that are tied to the stylistic design. For example, a chrome profile will organically fit into a high-tech style. And if you want to emphasize the transition from one material to another, you can play on the contrast and choose a darker or lighter shade.

The choice of the nut also depends on the technical requirements, design, budget.

Tile threshold

A threshold made of tile or ceramic tiles looks beautiful, but you need to have some skills to create it.

Tiled balcony threshold

If we talk about the advantages of such a threshold, then there are fewer of them than disadvantages, namely:

  • durability;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • 100% protection against moisture penetration
  • the threshold of the tiles can be made at any height difference.

The disadvantages include:

  • long installation;
  • a skill is needed for high-quality laying and jointing of tiles;
  • high cost compared to other materials;
  • the surface of the tile will always be cold (except for a mixture of tiles and underfloor heating technology).

To build such a threshold you will need:

  • grinder or tile cutter;
  • drill with a special whisk for mixing the solution;
  • floor tiles;
  • primer;
  • spatula;
  • corners for tiles;
  • perforated corner;
  • building level, pencil and tape measure;
  • container for mixing the solution;
  • plaster;
  • fugue;
  • tile adhesive.

If the concrete threshold is not even, destroyed, or needs to be built up, cement, sand and edged board will come in handy to create the formwork.

Installation begins with the design of the formwork and pouring with cement mortar. After that, you need to wait a day before further work. If the irregularities are not critical, and it is not necessary to increase the threshold, you can fix the perforated corner on the edge of the threshold. After that, cover the working surfaces with primer, wait for the drying time and apply an even layer of plaster around the corner. Next, you can begin to measure the tile and cut it to size. Laying tiles is better to start from the center, and leave small parts around the edges. When laying tiles, you need to check the level. After the tile adhesive has dried, you can start jointing the joints. From above, the puffer can be covered with a moisture-resistant composition.

Installation of such a threshold may take several days, depending on the assigned work.

Summing up and talking about results

So, in this article, two main ways were considered on how to make sills near the balcony on your own, so that it is beautiful and neat.

Before proceeding with the construction of the threshold, it is worth, of course, to first decide which threshold is needed and which one will be most convenient. Since apartments and balconies are all different, and in each case an individual approach is needed.

After it is already clear what kind of threshold you need to start manufacturing, you need to prepare all the tools required for the threshold manufacturing process

It is worth paying attention to the fact that if a tile for the floor is used in the process of work, then it is necessary to purchase a special machine for cutting it, thus it will be possible to avoid cracking and breaking of the tile itself, and accidental injuries and cuts to the hands of the master himself. Such a machine is not very expensive, but it saves a lot of time and effort.

In the process of manufacturing a balcony sill, one should not rush - this work is very painstaking and unhurried, only then will there be an excellent result.

All materials that will be required during the repair process must be bought with high quality, paying attention to their expiration date. After all, the balcony threshold is not made for one year, but forever, and it will be very insulting and unpleasant, for example, if, due to poor-quality cement, after a few months, the threshold to the balcony suddenly cracks, and the tile starts to slide off it.

And the last, most important rule, when carrying out repairs or when building a new threshold on the balcony, you should not rush! It is necessary to properly give all materials to "grab" and dry, so that each layer hardens, if necessary, as it should. And after the threshold is ready, it is also worth not touching it for at least a couple of days, and then a beautiful and reliable balcony threshold will last a very long time and will please the eye.

The threshold to the balcony is one of the most problematic places in the apartment. This is due to frequent elevation changes in this place. If you do not properly take care of this part of the apartment, you can bring yourself a lot of inconvenience in the future. An ugly appearance, a cold bridge, constant stumbling, broken waterproofing - all these are problems that can arise due to a lack of attention to the transition between the apartment and the balcony.

Plastic as a material for balcony thresholds is very common. The plastic used is the same as in window sills, only in this case PVC will play the role of a step. Some, when dismantling and finishing loggias, may have left parts of plastic window sills that can be used.

This material, used in creating the threshold between the balcony and the room, has significant advantages:

  • low price;
  • protection of the room from cold air and moisture ingress;
  • installation of a plastic threshold can be done by anyone, without certain skills;
  • beautiful appearance.

The main disadvantage can be called fragility. This is due to the use of mounting foam during installation. Over time, the plastic begins to bulge and crack. Another disadvantage is the fact that the installation of a plastic threshold implies small height differences.

For installation you need:
  • plastic window sill;
  • a special gun with a balloon of mounting foam;
  • sealant, acrylic or silicone and gun;
  • saw for cutting the window sill to size;

On the edges of the plastic structure, if possible, you need to put on plugs.

wooden threshold

A great option if the flooring and skirting boards are made of wood or wood.

This option is good both in a private house and in an apartment.

Wood, in comparison with other materials, has the largest number of advantages:

  • environmentally friendly material;
  • perfectly retains heat, you can additionally insulate with mineral wool;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • durability;
  • ease of use;
  • wooden thresholds can be made at any height difference.

To make a threshold to a wooden balcony, you do not need to have professional skills.

To install a wooden threshold you will need:

  • wooden bars for the frame (dimensions will depend on the size of the future structure);
  • drill with concrete drilling mode;
  • dowel;
  • wood screws;
  • chipboard or OSB sheet;
  • wood saw;
  • tape measure, pencil and building level.

The first step is to mark the wooden bars, cut them to size and make a frame. You can fasten the bars together with the help of metal corners and self-tapping screws. Next, you need to set the frame according to the level, using substrates, or vice versa, undercuts. The next step is to drill holes in the bars and concrete threshold for dowels. When the frame is fixed, it is worth considering the need for additional insulation with mineral wool. After that, the chipboard or OSB sheet is measured to the dimensions of the frame, cut and fixed to the frame using self-tapping screws. It remains only to come up with an external finish (everything will depend on the surrounding interior) and the threshold is ready.

You can treat the composition with a special composition that has antifungal and waterproof properties.

Tile threshold

A threshold made of tile or ceramic tiles looks beautiful, but you need to have some skills to create it.

If we talk about the advantages of such a threshold, then there are fewer of them than disadvantages, namely:

  • durability;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • 100% protection against moisture penetration
  • the threshold of the tiles can be made at any height difference.

The disadvantages include:

  • long installation;
  • a skill is needed for high-quality laying and jointing of tiles;
  • high cost compared to other materials;
  • the surface of the tile will always be cold (except for a mixture of tiles and underfloor heating technology).

To build such a threshold you will need:

  • grinder or tile cutter;
  • floor tiles;
  • primer;
  • spatula;
  • corners for tiles;
  • perforated corner;
  • building level, pencil and tape measure;
  • container for mixing the solution;
  • plaster;
  • fugue;

Installation of such a threshold may take several days, depending on the assigned work.

brick threshold

In Soviet times, this was the most common version of balcony thresholds. Brick is relevant if the height differences are too large. If you fix such a problem with cement mortar, it will significantly hit your pocket. In this case, brick is the best option.

To create such a threshold, you will need:

  • bricks (ceramic or silicate);
  • sand and cement;
  • drill with a special whisk for mixing the solution;
  • primer;
  • perforated corner;
  • building level, tape measure, pencil;
  • metal beacons;
  • hammer;
  • spatula and trowel.

Installation begins with cleaning the working surface. After that, the surface is covered with a primer. When the soil is dry, you can proceed to the next steps. A cement-sand mortar is mixed, which should be applied in a thin layer on the primed surface. Bricks are laid on the mortar. After that, all remaining voids and seams are smeared with the remaining solution. It is necessary to check the planes for level. When everything is precisely installed, the installation of metal beacons and a perforated corner is required. The next step is to plaster the resulting threshold by level. Further design may be varied.

Threshold made of laminate

Compared to a wooden threshold, laminate is a more profitable option. And since the flooring as a laminate is quite popular, this type of threshold will be a good solution without compromising the interior. The best option if you want to completely change the flooring and immediately make a threshold.

To create a threshold from a laminate, you will need:

  • wooden bars;
  • saw;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • hammer;
  • wedges;
  • liquid Nails;
  • corner for decorating the edge of the threshold;

Specialization: master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing work and laying flooring. Installation of door and window blocks, facade finishing, installation of electrics, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

The threshold to the balcony is a place where two different rooms are connected, and in this area there are often significant height differences. If you do not ennoble this part of the structure and do not make it more convenient to use, then you run the risk of stumbling over the protruding door frame for years.

It is much easier after installing a balcony block to build a comfortable and safe platform or even steps (it happens if the height difference is too large), this is what I will talk about in the review.

Work options

From the title it is clear that I will talk about four options for the work, each of them has proven to be reliable, so you need to choose the one that best suits your design. And the surrounding interior should be taken into account, because if you have wood trim around, then putting plastic is at least unreasonable.

Method 1 - building a brick threshold

This option was previously used everywhere, in Soviet times no one came up with simple solutions at all: “Since everyone is laying bricks, then it’s right,” the developers reasoned and built a threshold to the balcony from this material.

But even today this solution is used often, it is most suitable in the following situations:

  • When the height difference between the balcony door frame and the opening is very large. Often, installers lay a brick when installing a balcony block, in this case, ask them to position it so that it stands level, and then you can lay the rest of the space without problems;

  • If the opening is severely damaged and its strength is of concern, this happens in old houses. It is easier to lay the threshold with a brick, it will definitely strengthen the plane, and it will not crack and crumble under loads.

It is possible to apply this option of carrying out work only if the difference is greater than the height of the brick by at least a few centimeters. You will need to level the surface, and then finish it, and if the height is not enough, then your threshold may be higher than the door frame.

For work, we need the following materials:

Brick Most often, you need several pieces, many advise using the silicate version, but, in my opinion, other types are no worse. The strength of any of the species is enough for the eyes, it can withstand much more than the weight of a person
masonry mortar I could advise you to buy cement, dig up sand and mix the mortar yourself, but it is much easier to purchase a bag of ready-made composition, which you just need to dilute with water and use for its intended purpose. The price of a bag weighing 25 kg is approximately 250 rubles, and we don’t need more
perforated corner We need a piece to level the corner, but the corner is sold only in pieces of 2.5-3 meters, you have to buy a whole one. The cost of this product is cheap, so you will not incur large expenses.
Primer She can pre-treat the surface if it is too loose. Also, the primer is applied to the finished result after the solution has dried, this is necessary to strengthen the surface, sand stops being taken from it, and the absorbency decreases

In order for the solution to harden faster, you can add a little (10-15%) gypsum, no more is needed. If you overdo it, you will have to race with the solution, and most likely it will harden faster than you can use it.

We can not do without a tool:

  • To prepare the solution, you need a container and a drill with a mixer nozzle. But, in extreme cases, you can do without a power tool, then we need a strong stick, with which we will vigorously stir the mixture;
  • The mortar on the brick can be applied both with a mason's trowel and with a spatula, the amount of work is small, so use what you have. It is convenient to level the surface with a spatula at the end of the work, this is also important;
  • Most likely, in some places you will have to lay pieces of brick, it is easiest to beat it to the desired size with a bricklayer's hammer, we do not need perfect accuracy, but there will be no column of dust, as when cutting with a grinder;

Instructions on how to make a threshold on the balcony look like this:

  • First of all, it is necessary to clean the base from debris and dust, if there are influxes of mortar, protruding sections and protrusions on it, then they must be removed. Try to prepare the surface as well as possible - the smoother it is, the easier it will be for you to work. If there are influxes of mounting foam, then they must be carefully and evenly cut with a sharp construction knife;

  • Then the masonry mortar is prepared, this is done as described in the instructions on the package, everything is very simple, and the main thing is to observe the proportions of water and mixture. It is important to mix the mass well so that there are no lumps and unmixed areas in it, it should be uniform;
  • The mortar is applied under the base of the brick. After that, it must also be smeared on the end side so that the seams are also filled with a mixture. Masonry is carried out in one layer, so there is nothing complicated in the work - put a uniform layer and gently press the elements;

  • If necessary, the brick is beaten off with a pick to the desired size, here you already need to look at the situation. The surface is covered with a layer of mortar, a corner is placed at the corner, level it with a spatula to achieve the best result. When the surface dries, it can be slightly moistened and leveled with a foam float, so the plane will become almost perfect.

This completes the process, our threshold is ready, how it can be finished, I will tell below.

Method 2 - filling the threshold with a solution

The device of this type of construction differs from the above. It is suitable for cases where the level needs to be raised, but the height is less than the size of the brick. Honestly, I use this option almost always when I need to raise the plane, it seems to me easier and faster.

To work we need the following:

  • Cement-sand mixture of the M-150 brand, it is very convenient for it to pour screeds and it is inexpensive - about 100 rubles for a 50-kilogram bag;

  • For the construction of the formwork, we need a board of the required height with a thickness of 25 mm, its length should be slightly larger than the width of the opening in which we will fill the threshold.

From the tool you need a container for stirring the solution, a spatula and a grater for the final leveling.

The work is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • First of all, you need to clean the base of dirt and cut off the mounting foam if it sticks out. The protruding sections do not need to be beaten off, if the surface is very crumbling, you can walk on it with a primer;

  • Then you need to install the formwork, the board is simply pressed tightly against the wall and fixed with any heavy object - tiles, a bag of mixture, etc.;
  • The solution is prepared as indicated on the package, its consistency, in fact, is not important, but you should not add a lot of water, as the mixture will turn out to be too liquid;
  • If the mortar layer is thick, then stones, broken bricks, gravel or concrete chips are placed in the cavity. The layer should not be higher than the level of the future threshold, if the thickness of the fill is small, then you can do without filler;
  • The solution is poured carefully so that it fills the entire volume and reaches the level we require. The surface is leveled with a spatula, and excess composition is also removed, if any;

  • After the surface dries (after an hour or two), you need to moisten it and rub it with a grater, so you get a flat surface, a side that is adjacent to the board, and so it will be smooth.

Again, I'll talk about the finish below.

Method 3 - plastic window sill threshold

This option is good for its simplicity and low cost. But there is one important nuance here: if the window sill is of poor quality, it will quickly break when people move, and you will have to replace it. But if you buy a solid option, then there will be no problems.

To work we need the following:

  • Plastic window sill of the desired length and width;
  • Mounting foam for gluing the element;
  • Sealant for filling joints;
  • End plates for side faces;
  • Bars for stops (if necessary).

The plastic threshold from the window sill is made as follows:

  • The base is cleaned of dust and dirt, excess foam is cut off;
  • The opening is measured, and the window sill is cut according to the profile we need. Do not cut a lot at once, it is better to fit the element as accurately as possible, it is undesirable to make mistakes;
  • The element is tried on, you need to determine to what height it needs to be raised, if the difference is small, then you can put the threshold on the foam, but if the height is more than 1 cm, then it is better to place bars or plastic plates under the structure at the required level;

  • Then, mounting foam is applied in an even layer, there is no need to put too much of it, as it expands during polymerization and can lift our structure. The threshold is carefully glued to the surface and pressed with a load to keep it in position;

  • After the foam has hardened, it is worth inspecting our structure, if there are gaps at the joints, then they need to be sealed with white silicone, it will protect the space under the threshold from moisture. The ends are closed with special plugs, this is the end of the work.

On the Internet, I often saw advice to fasten the threshold with self-tapping screws, in my opinion, this is at least not serious: there is simply nowhere to screw the hardware, concrete is not the best base for them. Yes, and the strength of fastening without screws, I have no doubt.

Method 4 - building a wooden threshold

This option is good in an appropriate setting, if you have wood finishes or the room is decorated in a rustic style and other similar trends. To work we need the following:

  • Board or other wooden elements for the construction of the threshold;
  • A couple of bars to create a base under the threshold.

Let's figure out how to install a similar design:

  • First of all, as always, the base is cleaned and everything superfluous is removed;
  • Next, you need to build a frame, it is made of bars of tedious height, if necessary, they can be hung up or, on the contrary, put slats under them to bring a flat plane to the level we need;
  • With the help of a perforator, holes are drilled in the base and the bar, into which fast mounting dowels of the required length are then inserted and screws are hammered to fix the structure. You should get an even, solid foundation for the future threshold;
  • Next, our threshold board is placed, it can be fixed around the perimeter with self-tapping screws or cloves. In the future, all joints will be closed with a wooden corner and no fasteners will be visible. The corners are easiest to stick on liquid nails;

  • You can assemble the threshold on the balcony from the lining, for this it is cut into pieces of the desired length and fastened into the groove. After the installation is completed, the outer corner is glued or nailed with finishing nails;

  • Naturally, wood needs protection from moisture and abrasion. The surface is necessarily treated with an antiseptic composition, after which it is applied or varnish, it all depends on your wishes. The compositions must be wear-resistant, you need to paint the threshold at least twice.

Threshold finishing options

Of the options we have considered, two provide an excellent end result, and two act as a base on which to lay the coating. Let's figure out how to finish the threshold to the balcony of brick and mortar with your own hands. The first option is the use of ceramic tiles, this material is characterized by the highest strength and wear resistance, which means it is great for our purposes.

The technology of work is as follows:

  • Since we have prepared and primed the plane, you can immediately start measuring. You need to calculate how the tile will be located. It should lie symmetrically, that is, it should not be such that a whole piece is laid on one side, and a half on the other, arrange the elements evenly, it looks much better;

  • Ceramics is cut with a tile cutter or a grinder with a disc for concrete. It is important to take measurements carefully so that the elements lie flat;

  • The tile is placed on a special adhesive, which is applied with a notched trowel. In order for the seams to be the same size, you need to insert spacers into them. Control the plane with a level, all elements must lie flat;
  • You can also tile the wall under the threshold, it all depends on your wishes, the work here is carried out in the same way. For strength, you can insert a special element into the corner joint, but this is not necessary if you have an even joint;

For the threshold, choose a tile with a textured surface, smooth ceramics are highly undesirable, as it can be very easy to slip on it.

  • After the adhesive composition has hardened, its excess is removed, and the seams are filled with a fugue, which makes the appearance of the threshold neater and protects the base from water penetration.

The second finishing option is a laminate threshold, it is quite simple to implement and therefore popular these days. The technology of work is as follows:

  • Measurements are taken, and the required piece of laminate is cut out, most often one plank is enough, especially since they come in different widths and you can choose the best solution. You can cut the material with a hacksaw for wood with a fine tooth or a hacksaw for metal, but if you have a jigsaw, the process will be even easier;

  • The finished piece is tried on, if everything is fine, then liquid nails are applied to its back side, after which the element is pressed tightly against the surface. The correct use of the composition will be prompted by the instructions on the package;
  • Last of all, the corner is attached to the step, they are sold in hardware stores, and you just need to cut a piece of the desired width.

I’ll tell you about one more solution - finishing the threshold to the balcony with linoleum. This material has a low price, especially since you can buy a piece from the waste. The work is done like this:

  • A piece of material is applied to the surface, after which the lines are marked along which it will be cut off, try to cut the linoleum as carefully as possible so that the joints are without defects;

  • Then the base is smeared with linoleum glue, and the material is pressed at its location, align it and press firmly for the best adhesion, pay special attention to the joints;
  • Lastly, a metal corner is attached, which will strengthen the protrusion and prevent damage to the linoleum in this place.

Conclusion

The threshold to the balcony should not only be reliable and safe, but also attractive, so be sure to use one of the options described above. The video in this article will help you understand some important nuances even better, and if you suddenly do not understand something, then do not hesitate to ask questions in the comments under this review.
