Basic, typical faults and problems with sewing machines: bad stitching, thread breakage, needle breakage.
Skipping stitches in the stitching of a sewing machine and overlocker appears if a low-quality thread or needle of the wrong thickness is used. The size of the gap between the needle and the nose of the shuttle (loopers in an overlocker) also affects this.
Defects such as “bias stitch” and broken upper and lower threads can usually be eliminated by adjusting the tension of both threads. But, if, after adjusting the tension, stitch defects do not disappear, then you will have to adjust the interaction of the shuttle stroke and the needle, the mechanism for advancing the fabric, etc. This is especially typical for the Chaika sewing machine. Moreover, if the installation parameters of the “Seagull” shuttle are off, then it is quite difficult to make such an adjustment yourself. But mostly eliminate sewing machine malfunctions and problems Can correct adjustment thread tension, needle replacement, lubricating and cleaning the machine.

After disassembly, the upper thread tensioner is not assembled correctly.
- Incorrect threading.
- Poor quality threads.
- The thread number does not match the needle number.
- The spring of the bobbin case lock has weakened.
Inside the bobbin case you can find a very small screw, and if you unscrew it, the lock mechanism can be removed and you will find a long spring. Try to stretch this spring slightly, but it is better to buy a new bobbin case.
- There are nicks and burrs along the path of the thread to the needle.
Carefully follow the path of the thread and, after detecting nicks, remove them with a small needle file. In older Podolsk-type machines, there may be thread cuts on the tensioner rod. Disassemble the tensioner and inspect the rod; if there are such cuts, remove them with sandpaper.

2. Reasons for breaking the bottom thread

The reason for the bottom thread breaking may be a low-quality thread, for example, cotton thread from Soviet times.
- The screw that presses the spring (plate) on the bobbin case protrudes excessively.
The tension of the lower thread is often adjusted, and sharp nicks appear on the screw head. The lower thread, wrapping around the bobbin case, clings to them and breaks off.
- The lower thread tension in the bobbin case is too tight.
- There are nicks on the edges of the bobbin.
The thread gets between the bobbin and the walls of the bobbin case and breaks. Change bobbins as soon as the first nicks or chips appear.
- The edges of the bobbin are bent, there are gouges from the needle and nicks.

3. Looping the lower and upper threads. Bad line

The thread on the spool and bobbin is unevenly wound. Do not wind the thread onto the bobbin by hand; use a special device for this. Evenly laying the thread on the bobbin ensures the same uniform thread flow. Hand-wound thread can get caught in other turns and pull the upper thread more than it should. As a result, loops appear at the bottom.

Dirt or fuzz or thread trimmings have gotten under the leaf spring of the bobbin case.
- A slot has formed under the leaf spring on the bobbin case. This happens after many years of intensive use of the sewing machine. You should not fix bobbin case malfunctions yourself, except for cleaning and adjusting the thread tension. The best solution to troubleshoot a bobbin case is to buy a new case.
- Weak tension on both threads.
- Strong tension on both threads.

4. Poor fabric advancement

Weak foot pressure.
- The sole of the foot is skewed, and it does not press the fabric with its entire surface.
- The teeth of the rack are dull.
- is set to embroidery mode or the teeth of the feed dog are too low and do not catch the fabric well. Correct position teeth when sewing medium thickness fabric: with the maximum rise of the feed from the needle plate, the teeth should rise completely, but not higher than the height of the teeth. Their position too high will create a “fit” in the fabric or tighten it.

5. Reasons for needle breakage

The needle number does not match the thread number or fabric thickness.
- The needle is bent.
- The needle is not inserted into the needle bar all the way.
- The needle does not pass through the center of the needle hole of the plate. The needle must pass exactly in the center of the hole in the needle plate. Make sure that the needle does not touch the rail while using the sewing machine. Incorrect needle position may be caused by a bent needle bar.
- The needle bar position is set too low or high.
- Incorrect sewing. While sewing, do not pull the material by hand; find the reason why the machine does not advance the fabric well. Adjust the presser foot pressure on the fabric.

6. Skipped stitches

The needle is too high when it meets the nose of the hook and it does not catch the needle loop. See Setting up the shuttle of the Chaika sewing machine.
- The needle is bent or the needle point has become dull.
A curved needle can be identified in the light by twisting it on a flat and dark plane.
- The needle is not installed all the way or incorrectly, on the wrong side.
- Using a needle type that is not intended for this sewing machine. Often, industrial-style needles are used in household sewing machines. They do not have a cut on the flask and are absolutely not intended for such machines.
- The settings for the interaction of the needle and the shuttle are misaligned.

In this video you will learn the reason for the expensive repair of a sewing machine caused by a broken toothed drive belt. You will also learn recommendations on how to avoid this sewing machine breakdown.

If the foot drive is, one might say, a complete antique, then here it is manual drive can be used, especially for beginners learning to sew. Read this article to learn how to repair this device yourself.

The main malfunctions and malfunctions of these sewing machines, as a rule, are not related to its adjustment. Sometimes it is enough to install the needle correctly, replace low-quality threads, select the correct tension of the lower and upper threads, and the machine will work perfectly again.

A broken needle on a sewing machine is a sign that it requires “serious” tuning or adjustment. But, often, setting up the sewing machine is not required; it is enough to stop pulling the fabric while sewing. The second common cause of needle breakage is sewing thick fabrics that are not intended for sewing on this model of sewing machine.

Skips occur due to the fact that the nose of the shuttle “meeting” the needle does not pick up the upper thread from it. Either it is located far from the needle (large gap), or the upper thread loop is formed too early or late, or too small size. That's all the reasons, simple, isn't it? All that remains is to find out why this happens and how to eliminate these malfunctions.

The line loops, which means that the top thread “slows down” during movement and an excess of it appears. There are many reasons for this, ranging from the uneven thickness of the thread itself to the shuttle stroke. Start by carefully tracing the path of the thread. Perhaps it just clings to the fine notch of the thread guide.

It's rare, but sometimes you can find foot-operated machines. The best decision Instead of repairing the drive, install an electric drive on the machine. This is done quite easily and anyone who has a screwdriver can install it with their own hands. But, if you need recommendations on how to carry out repairs, adjustments foot drive, this article is at your service.

Sewing machine faults and problems It will be easier to fix if you understand how the sewing machine works and which part is used for what. Study carefully the structure of your machine according to the instructions or using our article.

The machine must be lubricated at least once a year. But don’t overfill it with oil. Oil tends to dry out over time, and the resulting clumps of dried oil can cause some sewing machine malfunctions.

The bobbin is that inconspicuous detail that no one pays attention to. And it is this that causes many problems and malfunctions of the sewing machine. You can disassemble the entire machine without finding the reason for the “looping” of the stitching. And as soon as you replace the bobbin with a new, smooth and light one, the stitching will be even and beautiful.

A sewing machine needs lubrication like oil for your car engine. But we take care of the car and wash it with shampoo almost every week. Why not then wipe the body of the sewing machine from dust, clean its internal mechanisms with a brush so that they are clean and dry, without traces of oil and thread frays.

Sewing machine owners trademark Janome knows firsthand about the excellent quality of this sewing equipment and has personally seen this from their own experience. Although sometimes you still have to make minor repairs to the Janome sewing machine with your own hands, which consists of replacing the needle or adjusting some units of the unit for a more correct and precise work. But not a single type of mechanical equipment, and especially equipment with electronic filling, is insured against wear or complete failure of some spare parts.

Needless to say, if any breakdown occurs in a Janome sewing machine, the most correct solution would be to call a technician to your home or transport the sewing machine to a service center to correctly determine the cause of the breakdown and effectively eliminate it. The subsequent reliability of the functioning of the sewing machine directly depends on professionally carried out repairs and adjustments of the sewing equipment.

Sewing machine in household either reality or the dream of every woman, even if sewing things with her own hands is not her hobby. In any family there is a lot of simple work with fabrics that you absolutely don’t want to do by hand, because sewing on a machine is much faster and of better quality. In the old days, an old “Singer” or “Podolskaya” was cherished as the apple of one’s eye and passed on by inheritance. Now purchasing this equipment is not a problem; the only difficulty is choosing a model. We present to you the Janome My Excel W23U sewing machine, reviews of which place it in the first row among many models. The company that produces these products, Janom, has many years of experience and uses the latest technologies for their production.

Introductory review

Computer-controlled machines have a microprocessor, so their capabilities are much wider than those of simple electromechanical ones. Only computerized machines can perform many decorative stitches and complex operations.

W23U has good combination functionality and low price at good quality sewing The list of its capabilities includes many operations: an optimal set of stitches with a total of 23, including several decorative, overlock, and also for sewing knitwear; automatic buttonhole sewing; devices for sewing zippers and buttons.

The power of this model is sufficient to work with any type of fabric, from thin, airy fabrics to dense, heavy materials.

Janome W23U: Feature Specifications

The Janom machine has smooth adjustment speed, needle positioning, electronic needle puncture force stabilizer, needle threader. The working needle is controlled by a built-in microprocessor, which significantly reduces the need to control the stitching. The presser foot pressure regulator changes the pressing force of the layers of fabric, which allows, if necessary, to set it to the desired position depending on the thickness of the layer. For example, when sewing thick fabrics, as well as when sewing curved seams with a smooth turn, the presser foot should be loosened. The presence of a regulator makes it easier to work with knitwear, since by reducing the pressure, you can avoid the effect of stretching it. The electronic force stabilizer allows you to sew even thick leather.

The controls are located under the top cover of the Janome W23U. The instructions are located there, so without stopping from work, you can see the width and length of the stitch for a specific operation, as well as select the thread tension and the appropriate presser foot. Maximum stitch width is 6.5 mm. While sewing working field illuminated by a lamp. The spool in the Janome W23U sewing machine is located horizontally, so the threads unwind smoothly, without jerking.

Another function is the “reverse” key. The button is conveniently located; you can easily find it by touch and press it to secure the stitch.

Shuttle device

Computerized machines typically use a horizontal shuttle. This is exactly what is installed in Janome My Excel W23U. This type has a different arrangement and design from the vertical shuttle. It is installed horizontally under the needle plate, and since it is not covered by the bobbin case, it is within sight. It is convenient for the seamstress to control the color of the thread and its residue on the bobbin.

The horizontal shuttle does not need lubrication, the thread in the spool does not twist (vertical ones have this disadvantage). It does not skip stitches when sewing. The horizontal position of the shuttle provides easy access to the bobbin and easy threading.

The disadvantage of a horizontal shuttle could be the difficulty of adjusting the tension of the lower thread, but in practice this operation is used very rarely; usually it is enough to adjust the tension of the upper thread.

Let's take a closer look at some positive features cars.

Automatic buttonhole sewing, free sleeve

The Janome W23U sewing machine allows you to perform functions such as sewing buttonholes automatically in just one step. The size of the button is determined by a device with a special foot, so you don’t have to measure the length of the buttonhole yourself. Another useful feature, the so-called “free sleeve”, is necessary for convenience when processing sleeves and any narrow products.

Needle switching function

Switching the needle up or down is sometimes necessary when changing the direction of the seam, in particular at the corners of the parts being sewn. By pressing the button, you can fix the lower position of the needle in the fabric when stopping sewing. After turning the product, press the button again. The needle will return to the up position.

Sewing speed limit

If you need to reduce the sewing speed, just use the regulator to set the desired maximum limit. After this, regardless of the pressure on the pedal, it will not exceed the specified value.

Equipment

Under the lid there is an organizer for storing accessories: a set of needles, presser feet, spool pins, bobbins, etc. Included with the Janome My Excel W23U machine, the buyer receives:

  • Seam ripper.
  • wide (C), standard, for sewing in a zipper, for blind stitching, for hemming 2 mm, for automatic buttonholes.
  • Ruler-guide.
  • Fabric guide for quilting.
  • Set of needles.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Cleaning brush.
  • Plastic bobbins 4 pcs.
  • Hard case for the machine.

Possible faults

Janome W23U sewing machines like all Japanese ones Appliances, high quality and reliable. Nevertheless, breakdowns sometimes occur. Most often, the reason for such trouble is the lack of proper care or careless performance of work. Even the most advanced technology can refuse to work if it is not provided with the right conditions operation.

If you know the basic principles, you can try to fix minor problems with the machine yourself. However, it should be taken into account that technical device The Janome W23U sewing machine has its own characteristics, so some breakdowns and failures may be atypical, as with most machines of other brands. This is due to the fact that in the manufacture of its equipment, the Janome concern uses advanced technologies, providing almost complete sewing automation.

So, some problems:

  1. The needle does not catch the shuttle thread, the seam does not work. The reason is the mismatch between the needle mechanism and the shuttle. The mechanism needs to be adjusted by a specialist.
  2. The speed slowed down and the noise increased. A switch that limits the speed may have been accidentally pressed. You should put it in the right position.
  3. When sewing, loops are formed at the bottom. The reason is that the upper thread is not threaded correctly. Most likely the thread is not passing through the thread take-up. You need to raise the foot, turn the flywheel manually, when the thread take-up is in the upper position, pass the thread through it. If the thread is fine, it may be because there are burrs on the needle plate or hook.
  4. Needles break. Occurs when the needle hits the needle plate, or when the thickness of the needle does not match the thickness of the thread or the density of the fabric.
  5. If you hear a knocking sound when sewing thick fabrics, you should check whether the needle is dull. Perhaps the needle is of the wrong thickness and does not push the fabric fibers apart, but pierces them. Hence the knock. To fix it, just replace the needle.
  6. Due to power surges in the network, wires or windings in the motor may burn out. If there is a smell of burnt wiring, you should send the machine for repair.
  7. If the engine does not turn on, but it does not, the electronic control unit may have failed. Its replacement can only be performed by specialists who understand the complex electronics of the Janome W23U machine. The price of spare parts is determined in each specific case depending on the breakdown.

Caring for Janom sewing machines

Any sewing machine requires maintenance, first of all, regular cleaning and lubrication, otherwise “surprises” will begin in the form of noise, skipped stitches, uneven stitching, etc. Cleaning should begin by removing the hook. The rubbing surfaces are cleaned from dust, lint and fabric fibers with a special brush. Then they are lubricated. In addition, oil is poured into technological holes, the location of which is indicated in the instructions. At the same time, you need to remember that excessive lubrication does not benefit the machine, but is fraught with the opposite effect. Excess lubricant is wiped off with a dry cloth, after which the shuttle is installed in place. The machine can only be stored in dry, heated rooms.

Sewing machines Janome My Excel W23U: price, reviews

Based on customer reviews, we can conclude that the presented sewing machine is characterized by them as convenient and reliable. Almost all owners of this modern functional equipment are inclined to this opinion. The main criteria by which such an indispensable assistant is evaluated:

  • Ease of Management;
  • reliability;
  • availability of functions necessary for everyday needs and hobbies;
  • modern design;
  • ergonomics;
  • average price category.

The appearance of the device is above all praise, and the presence of instructions on the panel and buttons is another plus that the Janome W23U sewing machine has earned from its owners. Reviews confirm what to have before your eyes practical guide much more convenient than flipping through the instructions in search of the necessary information.

Despite all its undoubted advantages, its price is not too high. You can purchase a Janom machine both in chain stores and via the Internet for an amount of 7,000 rubles and more. Often, the cost of similar models does not depend on the differences between them, but solely on the place of purchase. However, it is preferable to purchase a machine “in real life”, then there is an opportunity to test it in operation, as they say, without “leaving the cash register”.
