Potato planter for walk-behind tractor: drawings, dimensions, photos, video of manufacturing.

Planting potatoes by hand is a tedious process, because after plowing the garden, the soil quickly loses moisture and you need to plant the tubers as quickly as possible, if the area for planting is large, then the planting process can take several days.

With a walk-behind tractor and a potato planter, the planting process will be much faster, because you can immediately put a planter and guide discs on the walk-behind tractor to fill the harrow with soil.

If the walk-behind tractor is powerful enough, you can immediately install a plow in front of the planter, which will make a furrow for planting potatoes.

There are a lot of options for potato planters on the Internet, we will consider the best proven option with a simple design.

The design of the potato planter consists of a hopper for potato tubers, which is mounted on a steel profile frame. In turn, the frame is mounted on an axle with a pair of metal wheels with lugs.

An asterisk is welded onto the axle, which drives the chain with bowls. As the bowl moves, potatoes are lifted from the bunker and thrown into the furrow along the guide tube.

The frame of the potato planter is welded from a profile pipe; as a bunker, you can use a tank from the Soviet washing machine "Riga" or a similar cone-shaped container.

Bearings with a lower axle and a drive sprocket for the chain and vertical racks for the upper axle with an asterisk are attached to the frame.

Bucket rings made of 6 mm wire are welded to the chain on the sides, the buckets must be welded in such a way that the joints between the chain links are not welded.

To prevent the tubers from falling out of the buckets prematurely, you need to install a guide pipe, as an option, you can use a plastic downpipe with a diameter of 100 mm.

To fill the furrow, two rotary discs are installed with the ability to adjust the angles.

A homemade potato planter consists of:

  • from the bunker for planting material;
  • frames with wheels;
  • bipod for digging ditches;
  • special fixtures with bowls for capturing tubers;
  • discs for backfilling furrows.

How to assemble a two-row potato planter yourself

The assembly of a potato planter for a mini-tractor must begin with the installation of a frame. It is made from channel No. 8. Two spars are attached to the frame for welding subsequent parts and reinforced with three crossbars.

Detailed drawing of a potato planter for a mini tractor

In front of the spars, fasteners are welded to them, with the help of which the planter will cling to the tractor. Then the spars are reinforced with two inclined metal beams, to which the bunker for planting material is subsequently welded. From below, it is necessary to attach a plow, or opener, an axle for one wheel to the frame.

The container for potatoes is made from pieces of plywood with a thickness of at least 1.5 cm. First, the details of the desired shape and size are cut out, then they are interconnected with metal corners. Plywood is impregnated with drying oil and painted with water-based paint. From the inside, it can be upholstered with a softening material, such as rubber, to avoid damage to the tubers.

Under the container for potatoes, a tank from a washing machine is perfect. It is better to make the wheels for the planter wide so as not to trample the loose earth. The role of the seeder will be performed by a metal pipe with a hole of at least 10 cm. You also need to provide a workplace for an assistant who will monitor the process.

Now you know how it's done homemade potato planter for a mini tractor with your own hands. The video and drawings from this article will help you to keep the exact dimensions, taking into account the model of your mini tractor. Most often, potato planters are made for the T-25 or MTZ-82 tractor, so consider the model as well.

Attachment for various agricultural machinery allows significantly expand the application these units in rural areas. The presence of a walk-behind tractor or a mini tractor (for example) does not mean that you will be able to perform absolutely any task on earth.

For example, mowing lawns or planting potato tubers will not be available to you without the use of additional equipment.

In many ways, the land is cultivated specifically for planting potatoes in it, because it is not for nothing that it is called the “second bread”. Of course, many are used to doing it manually, but having a mini tractor or walk-behind tractor (for example), you can think about making a potato planter with your own hands.

This is a rather painstaking business, so we need specific knowledge and skills before starting work.

For an example, read the article about - a description of the model range, the main characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of models.

A - the presented detailed instructions on how to independently make a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor.

Instruction

Many are wondering - how to make a potato planter with your own hands, the drawings of which are on the Internet? Indeed, the network has enough recommendations with a detailed description and dimensions, following which, you can make enough working unit.

In that case, it would be something like this:

    • Of course, you need to start with frame construction on which the rest of the components will be attached. To do this, we need channels number 8, from which two longitudinal spars are welded, interconnected by three transverse strips of steel.
    • In front of the structure, you need to weld an arch with fastening forks going to the central rod.
    • Reinforce the frame two steel beams inclined type, which must be fixed with the second side to the middle of the arch. Next, you need to fix the seatpost support made from a 5x5x0.5 cm corner. We fix it to the side member with our own hands.
    • To inclined beams you need weld bracket plastic type. It is to these beams that the potato tank will be attached.
    • For the tank we need plain plywood, the thickness of which will be approximately 12 mm.

      We cut out all the sides of the bunker, and then fasten them together with steel corners. By the way, it will not be superfluous to treat the box with drying oil to protect it from moisture.

    • Can be installed inside the tank rubber sheets so that the potatoes are not damaged on its walls during movement. Next, we attach the hopper to the bracket using two bolts.
    • Next, you need to fix to the bottom of the frame wheel axle and ripper. In principle, you can see the drawings of a do-it-yourself potato planter for greater clarity.
    • The wheel axle is a structure made of various parts. As a basis, you can take an ordinary steel pipe, at the ends of which you need to install trunnions. It is difficult to give exact dimensions here, depending on what diameter of pipe you are using.
    • That's why , pins must be adjusted to these dimensions on a lathe.
    • Holes need to be drilled in the steel pipe, into which special pins with spikes will be installed. At the end, they must be brewed.
    • Wheel axle needs to be fixed using clamps made of steel, using M16 bolts in the amount of 4 pieces.

  • As a wheelbase, you can use wheels from old agricultural equipment. If there are none, then you need to work a little in this regard.
  • Required for wheels weld hubs, on which you then need to put on a pair of bearings. Next, we put the bearings on the spikes, protect them with a felt gasket so that they do not get too dirty.
  • The part holding the rippers is presented in the form of a square of steel rods welded together. At the ends of the square you need weld clips from sheet steel 6 mm. Racks of cultivator blades will be located inside them.
  • Sower for this unit is made of steel pipe, the diameter of which is 100 mm. At the same time, the thickness of the pipe wall must be at least 3 mm so that the structure does not bend during operation.
  • The pipes are welded on the bottom furrow cutter made of 6 mm thick sheet steel.
  • Must be attached to the frame seat for a person, as well as a footrest.

    The frame structure of the seat itself is made of corners welded together. The seat can be made from ordinary boards, which are covered with something soft - foam rubber, for example.

Basically, homemade potato planter dimensions are approximate, on a case-by-case basis. In any case, this scheme is working, so you can safely design the unit based on these parameters.

A home-made potato planter for the T 25 is also made in a similar way, because there is no definite value on what will play the role of the main thrust - a walk-behind tractor or a mini tractor. Of course, power indicators will be different, but the design of the potato planter itself almost identical.

In general, the process of planting potatoes with a homemade potato planter is as follows:

  • In the tuber tank potatoes fall asleep. You need to put a couple of bags of potatoes on top so as not to waste time when the tubers in the bunker run out.
  • One person sits on a seat located on a potato planter, and the second - either on a mini tractor or on a walk-behind tractor (see).
  • Movement must be carried out at a speed no more than 1 km/h.
  • A man sitting on a potato planter alternately throws tubers into tubers, located on both sides.
  • After the tubers get into the wells, they need fall asleep earth. It was for this that the discs were designed, which close the holes with earth, making a rotation.

You can change the depth of topsoil removal that these discs produce. For this you need:

  • Adjust ladders, carrying out pressing the support to the uprights, loosening them.
  • Maybe a little change the angle, under which these disks are located. To do this, you need to slightly turn them in the right direction.

After completing the boarding process, it remains to remove those traces who left a walk-behind tractor and a potato planter. In this case, baking powder will help us, i.e. cultivator blades located on racks. By the way, the degree of their immersion in the ground can also be adjusted.

A homemade potato planter with detailed dimensions can be a great way to save money that you would inevitably have if you purchased a potato planter from a specialty store.

Given that the average cost of this unit is about 15 thousand rubles, then this saving looks especially justified. At the same time, there are no special costs for the necessary materials in the manufacture, because the components are used from old, outdated units.

Conclusion

Making a potato planter on your own seems to be quite a difficult task, so you need to weigh the pros and cons before you get to work. Undoubtedly, self assembly will help you keep your savings, but it will also require a considerable amount of technical knowledge and skills from you.

But, if you are confident in yourself, and have repeatedly made any device yourself, then assembling a home-made potato planter will become quite understandable and feasible for you. In addition, this quite exciting like all things done by one's own hands.

In general, any man will appreciate the results of the work, as well as the manufacturing process itself.

In this article I will tell you about my DIY potato planter, which I have been using for several years. Since I designed it, I completely forgot about planting potatoes “under a shovel”. First of all, I’ll tell you about the principle of its operation, as well as about the design itself, with a photo and of course a video!

The principle of operation of a potato planter.

So, the principle of its operation is as follows, when the minitractor moves, the wheels of the potato planter rotate, together with which the axle with the leading star welded on it rotates. There is another star vertically above the leading star. A chain rotates between these sprockets, on which the so-called blades are welded to capture potatoes from the bunker. That's the whole principle of its work. Now let's talk about the design itself.

Potato planter design.

To make a frame, we need a profile, let's take 60 × 30 for example, wheels can be made from a gas cylinder by simply cutting a pair of 100 mm rings from it, these will be our future wheels, or from a pipe with a diameter of about 400 mm.

Attention! Before cutting the cylinder, first get rid of the remaining gas in it.

We need a leading star, approximately 270 mm and 40 teeth. Such stars used to be on Niva combines. We need a second star for 15 teeth. For them, we select a chain. For two bunker potato diggers, we, of course, have a pair of 40-tooth sprockets, a pair of 15-tooth sprockets and a pair of chains.

The blades are made of wire (round timber) 10 mm, a circle with a diameter of 50-60 mm and two arcs are welded crosswise on the bottom of it so that the potatoes do not fly by and do not get stuck in the blade. There are cases when the seed potatoes are small and the shovel captures two tubers each, in order to avoid this, you either need to collect potatoes of a more uniform size, or a person should sit behind the potato digger and brush off excess potatoes with his finger, as in our case.

The blades are welded with a step of 270 mm, the distance between the planted potatoes will depend on this step.

The hoppers are made of a frame and 1.5 mm sheet metal. In order for the potatoes to fall exactly into the bed, pipes with a diameter of 100 mm with a slot for the chain are installed on the outside of the bunkers.

Growing potatoes is very hard work. Its planting, hilling and harvesting requires great physical exertion. The problem is especially aggravated if the landing area exceeds 15 acres. To at least slightly simplify your work, you can automate this process. If the farm has a walk-behind tractor or a mini-tractor, the work can be facilitated by an automatic potato planter and potato digger. Such specific equipment is purchased together with a walk-behind tractor, but sometimes its prices exceed the cost of the walk-behind tractor itself, making it not very affordable for a wide range of users. The way out of this situation can be the manufacture of these devices with your own hands. They are quite complex, so for their production it is necessary to know the basics of mechanics, to have experience in welding and mechanical assembly work. How to make a potato digger and a potato planter with your own hands - later in the article.

The potato planter is a trailer for a walk-behind tractor. The principle of its operation is based on the automatic supply of planting material from the hopper into the furrow. Following the walk-behind tractor, thanks to the plow mounted on the frame, the device makes a hole of a set depth. Then, along the chain conveyor, which rotates due to the rotation of the potato planter wheels, the planting material is fed from the bunker to the hole. After that, two discs installed in the rear part of the frame dig in a hole with planted potatoes.

The dimensions of the do-it-yourself potato planter are selected individually, depending on the power of the walk-behind tractor. Thanks to the exact selection of the distance between the conveyor feeding bowls, it is possible to achieve uniform planting of tubers throughout the row.

The main parts of a do-it-yourself potato planter for a walk-behind tractor:

  • Frame. All the working elements of the unit are installed on it. The frame is made in the form of a welded metal structure from a profile pipe. This material has sufficient strength, while having a small weight. A towing device is installed in the bow of the frame, which ensures the coupling of the unit with the walk-behind tractor.
  • Bunker. Designed to load planting material into the unit. Performed in the form of an inverted pyramid. This shape is needed so that the potatoes constantly crumble down. If this does not happen, then some bowls of the conveyor will be empty during movement, which will lead to uneven landing. For the manufacture of the bunker, thin sheet metal is used.
  • Chain conveyor. It is made from a motorcycle or bicycle chain with bowls welded to its surface. The conveyor is driven by a drive sprocket mounted on the wheel shaft. From above it connects to the tension sprocket.
  • Plow. It is installed in front of the planting material supply mechanism. Its task is to produce a recess in which potatoes will be planted.
  • Disc harrows. They are installed at an angle to the axis of the potato planter in the tail section. They are necessary for burying a hole with planted potatoes.

Making a potato planter with your own hands

It is quite difficult to make a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor at home. Some operations (welding and turning) will still have to be done in a production environment. Before starting work, it is better to make do-it-yourself drawings of a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor. This will help to calculate the amount of material and determine the most optimal sequence of work.

For the production of this work you will need:

  • Steel sheet up to 2 mm thick for bunker welding.
  • Profile pipe with a section of 25x25 mm for welding the frame of the product.
  • Motorcycle or bicycle chain.
  • Two identical sprockets with a diameter of 80 mm.
  • Wheel axle (will have to be machined to fit the size of the bearings used and the inner diameter of the sprocket).
  • Wheel hubs for attaching drive wheels.
  • Disks are cultivator.
  • Furrower (plough). It must be made from a piece of durable sheet metal, as high pressure will be applied to it.

Work order:

  1. First of all, the frame of the structure is welded, on which all working parts will be installed. It is welded from a profile pipe. Conveyor racks and spars are welded to the frame to give the structure rigidity. A towbar is also welded to it for coupling with a walk-behind tractor.
  2. From below, the fastening structures of the plow, disks, clips and bearing housings are welded.
  3. Next, the shaft is assembled. The drive sprocket of the transport conveyor is mounted and fixed on the shaft with the help of a key. The shaft itself is mounted in bearings. A wheel hub is mounted at its end.
  4. The next step is the manufacture of conveyor bowls. They are made of thick wire Ø 6 mm in the form of a ring with a diameter of 60 mm (average size of a planting tuber). A piece of wire is welded to the bottom of the ring, making a deepening of the bowl.
  5. The finished bowl is welded to the mount. The latter is welded to the chain links. Depending on the diameter of the drive sprocket, wheel and chain length, it is possible to experimentally determine the installation step of the conveyor bowls so that the distance between the planting tubers is from 25 to 30 cm.
  6. After the conveyor chain is ready, proceed to the installation of an idle (tension) sprocket and a do-it-yourself potato planter tensioner. The principle of its operation is the same as the principle of tensioning the chain of a bicycle.
  7. Next, the bunker is mounted. It must be mounted in such a way that the working part of the conveyor passes through it and captures the planting material. In this case, the chain should not cling to the walls of the hopper, as this can lead to its destruction.
  8. After that, you need to install the chain. To pass it through the opening of the hopper, the chain must be disconnected. After that, it is connected and installed in the workplace.
  9. The idle side of the conveyor is closed with a thin galvanized chute. This is done so that the potatoes do not fall in the wrong place when throwing the conveyor.
  10. Next, the disks are mounted. They are attached to special sectors, which allow, if necessary, to change the angle of attack and the angle of inclination.
  11. The last step is to install the drive wheels.

The principle of operation and design of the potato digger

The work of a potato digger is to raise the root crops from the depth and separate them from the tops and soil. There are pros and cons to using a potato digger. The most important of these is the quality of the harvest. The main thing here is to properly configure the unit. Otherwise, up to 20% of root crops can be left in the ground, and such losses can negate all the efforts made.

Potato diggers are of various types, which differ both in the principle of operation and in the complexity of the design:

  1. Lance type potato diggers. The simplest type of device, which is easy to manufacture and use. Such a potato digger is a steel arrow that enters the ground at an angle and lifts the tubers along with the soil. At the rear of the boom, there is a fan made of steel rods, through which the soil is sifted, and the tubers are thrown to the sides.
  2. Vibrating type potato diggers. More complex designs. The principle of their work is to screen the tubers on a special vibrating table. Thanks to this, the soil is sifted down, and the potatoes themselves are laid out in a ribbon along the row. The vibrating table is driven by the moving parts of the walk-behind tractor. Independently, such structures are rarely made due to their complexity and the need for a wide range of mechanical assembly work.
  3. Conveyor-drum type. The most complex units The principle of their action is as follows:
  • A special device captures the soil with tubers and directs them to the conveyor.
  • The latter lifts the tubers with the ground and guides them to a rotating sieve drum. There they are separated from the ground and fall into a special bunker.
  • The advantage of such a potato digger is that the potatoes do not need to be picked from the row.

Making a do-it-yourself lancet-type potato digger

The design of such a potato digger is the simplest and most often made at home. To carry out this work, you need:

  • Cultivator's paw. It is she who will be the most important part of the unit.
  • A circle with a steel diameter of 8-10 mm for the manufacture of a screening fan.
  • Sheet steel 4-5 mm thick for the manufacture of a hitch with a cultivator and an adjusting device. It is necessary to change the angle of attack of the arrow.
  • Mounting bolts.
  • Screw tie.

Work order:

  1. First you need to weld steel bars to the arrow of the cultivator lama. This should be done at intervals of 40-50 mm. The length of the fan should be the same, respectively, if the rear edge of the arrow is at an angle, the length of the rods will be different - the farther from the center, the shorter.
  2. After that, the welded rods must be bent upwards at an angle of 30 °.
  3. Next, two holes are made in the paw for attaching it to the bracket and the adjusting tie. The bracket and tie are welded to the hitch plate. By shortening or lengthening the tie, the paw will move back and forth, thereby changing the angle of attack of the potato digger.
  4. The last stage of the potato digger is primed and painted.

When using it, it is important to monitor the condition of the leading edge. It must be well sharpened. Otherwise, the pressure on the boom will be too high, which may damage the structure.

The parameters of the potato digger are selected depending on the type of cultivated soil. The denser it is, the stronger the structure should be.

Do-it-yourself potato planter, dimensions: drawings, pictures, photos

Planting potatoes has always been a laborious and difficult process. However, today, thanks to the development of technology, agricultural work has been greatly facilitated. Now, thanks to walk-behind tractors, mini-tractors and all kinds of attachments, it is possible to improve soil cultivation, get a higher yield and reduce the cost of the product, at a lower cost than before. Among farmers and owners of small land plots, walk-behind tractors are very popular, on which you can install various attachments, including a potato planter.

The potato planter mounted on the walk-behind tractor makes it possible to facilitate the work of planting root crops as much as possible and to process a larger area than before. Below we will talk about the types, arrangement of equipment and how a do-it-yourself potato planter for a walk-behind tractor can be made.

Device elements

You can make a motor-block potato planter yourself, especially since this does not require any special tool, and there are plenty of device drawings, photos and videos on this topic on the Internet. For the manufacture of this type of attachment, you will need the following parts:

  • frame for fastening all elements of the potato planter;
  • bunker for planting material;
  • a system of gears that actuate the tuber planting mechanism;
  • a loosening mechanism that prepares holes and digs them in after planting;
  • setting mechanism;
  • wheels.

This is a necessary minimum of details in order to make a home-made unit for planting potatoes. Many craftsmen are constantly upgrading this type of attachment, adding a fertilizer container or, in an attempt to increase productivity, install two landing modules. However, all this sometimes leads to an increase in the mass of the walk-behind tractor, and, accordingly, an increase in the load on it and a decrease in its productivity. For this reason, it is necessary to choose the type of construction and materials in full accordance with the power of the unit.

The device and manufacture of a potato planter

A homemade potato planter, in principle, is a cart on wheels attached to a walk-behind tractor. It is only at first that the design of the potato planter looks simple, but there are some nuances in it. The motor-block potato planter is mounted on a chassis made of a channel with two longitudinal spars connected by three crossbars. At the front of the frame is a fork and an arch. On the sides of the chassis there are racks of closing discs and supports for the planting material supply mechanism.

The wheelbase also consists of two wheels with lugs. Between the wheels is a 60 mm thick wooden disk with four evenly spaced semicircular grooves, the dimensions of which should allow even large potatoes to be gripped. Also, instead of a wheel with grooves for planting potatoes, a system of gears, a chain and tuber trays located on it can be used.

As the drawing shows, there is another important element of the device - this is a hopper, which is located above the wheels. To make a container for potatoes, you need a 3 mm sheet of metal. The narrow neck and bottom of the bunker, in order to avoid damage to the root crops, should be covered with rubber.

The grooved wheel must be covered with a special shield that will prevent the potatoes from spontaneously falling out until they hit the ground.

The frame of a homemade potato planter should be reinforced with steel strips, which must be placed from the middle crossbar to the arch. You also need to weld additional corners and overlays made of steel with a thickness of about 4 mm.

On the Internet you can find many drawings and videos with a variety of potato planter designs.

Operator's seat and axle

It is necessary to attach a support and a footboard made of 5 mm steel to the spars. The height step must be made taking into account the growth of the operator and in such a way that the use of the potato planter does not cause difficulties.

The seat is made of a metal corner 45x45x4 mm. Boards are attached to the frame, which are lined with foam rubber and covered with leatherette or a strong dense fabric. You can do the simplest, as shown in the photo, but in principle, for greater convenience, you can use an old car seat bought at a car dismantling. However, in most cases, potato planters are made without a seat.

A wheel axle and a bracket for attaching rippers are fixed under the frame. For the axis, a thick-walled metal pipe is used, along both edges of which there are spikes, machined on a lathe and fixed with steel pins.

wheels

Special wheels for potato planter

Wheels for a homemade potato planter must have special lugs. It is advisable to take any suitable size wheels from agricultural machinery.

The hubs that hold the wheels should have two bearings and are protected from dirt by felt pads. The axle is attached to the frame by means of two metal plates and four bolts or corners and welding, as shown in the photo.

Rippers

For the holder of the rippers, a metal rod is used, along the edges of which clips holding the racks of the paws are installed. The bar is made of a metal corner 50x50x5 mm, but it is best to use a square pipe for strength. Clips are made of metal 5 mm plates.

sowing machine

For the manufacture of a potato sowing machine, minimal costs are required. To do this, you need to take a 100 mm pipe with a wall thickness of at least 3 mm, in the lower part of which a furrow cutter is attached.

Disks for burying potatoes can be taken from the seeder and install two bearings instead of one. Bearings must be installed in such a way as to prevent dirt from entering the assembly.

The video shows how, in reality, potatoes are planted with a do-it-yourself motor-block potato planter.

Peculiarities

Since the potato planter weighs decently, when attaching it to the walk-behind tractor, it is necessary to install a counterweight, which will give stability and prevent the walk-behind tractor from riding up.

On the potato planter, it is imperative to install an operator's chair and footrests.

The potato planter works as follows:

  • seed material is placed in the bunker, and additional bags are placed on top so as not to be constantly interrupted for refueling;
  • the operator sits down in his place and starts planting potatoes, moving at a speed of no more than 1 km / h.

After planting material enters the soil, it must be covered with earth. It is for these purposes that the closing discs were invented, which, rotating, shift the top layer of soil and fall asleep root crops.

A do-it-yourself unit for planting potatoes is not only a significant cost savings, but also an unit made just for you, as well as more reliable than a purchased one, because who will do bad things for themselves. In addition, this is a good opportunity to feel like a real Kulibin, making your own changes to already finished projects.

Potato cultivation is practiced by many landowners. Most of them achieve excellent results through the use of powerful motorized equipment and special devices for it, in particular, a mounted potato planter. Potato planting equipment helps to plant seed material at a favorable time and in compliance with the correct agricultural technology, namely, the optimal density and depth of planting tubers.

The device and types of potato planters

The potato seeder, mounted on a walk-behind tractor, performs all potato planting operations in one working cycle: it creates furrows, lays seed tubers, covers them with earth, and forms even ridges.

Potato planters mounted on a walk-behind tractor come in different modifications, but they all consist of:

  • frames;
  • keeled coulters;
  • closing discs;
  • tuber feeding mechanism;
  • bunker for planting material;
  • transport wheels/lugs.

According to the structure of the container for loading potatoes, devices are:

  • conical;
  • rectangular.

There is no particular difference in these two landing structures; they can differ only in the volume of the loading box, which can range from 20 to 50 liters. The large capacity of the hopper allows you to reduce the number of loads of seed during planting, but at the same time increases the weight of the potato planter and reduces the maneuverability of the walk-behind tractor.

According to the width of coverage, potato planters are divided into:

  • single row;
  • double row.

The single-row seeding model has a compact size and small to medium capacity, so it is suitable for a modest plot of land. With significant areas for growing root crops, it is more expedient to purchase a two-row potato planter, endowed with greater productivity.

According to the type of supply of tubers, potato planters for walk-behind tractors are classified into:

  • chain;
  • tape.

Mounted potato seeders, both with a chain conveyor and with a belt conveyor, provide a smooth dosed supply of planting material to the spoons, and from there to the coulter, which guarantees uniform seed placement in the soil. The mechanism of both types of potato planters is driven by lugs.

When choosing a potato planter, one should take into account not only the design features of the equipment, but also a number of other factors. It:

  • dimensions;
  • possibility of adjustment;
  • availability of additional options;
  • compatibility with a specific model of walk-behind tractor.

The designs of some modifications of potato planters include a fertilizer tank, which allows you to add nutrients to the soil along with seed potatoes. Potato planters can also have interchangeable sprockets to change the seeding spacing. Of course, the price of a planter depends on the availability of additional options, but in any case, the product remains affordable and any summer resident or farmer can purchase it without compromising their budget.

Some manufacturers produce potato planters that are compatible only with certain brands of motor units. But there is also universal potato planting equipment on sale, which is suitable for any model of a walk-behind tractor with traction. So, planters of the PL-20, PL-5, PL-50/2 brands are easily aggregated to the Scout walk-behind tractors, as well as the Neva, Salut and other models of heavy cultivators, motor units and mini tractors.

Also, planters such as:

  • KS-1 with a capacity of 40 liters, a track width of 70 cm, a capacity of 0.2 ha/hour;
  • KS-1A with a capacity of 34 liters, a track width of 60 cm, a capacity of 0.2 ha/hour;
  • KSM-1A with a capacity of 40 liters, a track width of 40-70 cm, a capacity of 0.25 ha/hour.

The most skilled farmers manage to equip their own walk-behind tractor, whether it be the Neva, Salyut or Centaur, with a do-it-yourself potato planter. Usually, in order to do this, economical owners use various parts from decommissioned equipment, suitable sprockets, chains, remnants of metal plates, corners and other materials at hand. A homemade device can be a worthy alternative to a purchased one. It is possible that the hand-assembled mechanism, like the factory one, will faithfully serve, helping to plant small vegetable gardens and entire potato fields.

How to set up a potato planter

Before starting to work with a potato planter, it is imperative to check the technical condition of the equipment, the strength of screw connections and working units, the tension of the conveyors, and then carry out the adjustment in accordance with the condition of the soil on the site. Almost all models of potato planters for walk-behind tractors have the ability to adjust and set a certain distance between potatoes, planting depth, and row spacing.

To adjust the potato planter, carry out the adjustment:

  • depth of work of coulters and hillers;
  • planting density of potatoes;
  • row spacing;
  • height and shape of the crest;
  • fertilizer dosing.

The planting depth of the seed can be 6-18 cm. It is regulated by changing the position of the support wheels or moving the copying elements of the sections relative to the coulters. With a ridge planting method, the depth should be within 10-18 cm, and with a smooth one - 6-12 cm.

The planting density of seed potatoes is set within 18-28 cm. It is chosen taking into account the size of the planting tubers, the variety of the cultivated crop, and the natural and climatic conditions. Small potatoes are planted at a distance of up to 20 cm from each other, larger ones - 20-28 cm. The regulation of this parameter is carried out by rearranging the replaceable sprocket. Also, planting density will depend on the rotational speed of the seed discs (in the presence of a synchronous drive) and on the speed of the equipment (in the presence of an independent drive).

The row spacing can be set within 55-70 cm. It can be adjusted by rearranging the coulters and planters along the frame on which they are mounted.

Regulating the shape and height of the ridge is carried out only with the ridge method of seed embedding. This is done by changing the angle of inclination and the position of the spherical disks. In the case of a smooth-row planting, the discs are set to the minimum height of the ridge and after all the potatoes are planted, the harrow is started to level the sown surface.

If, along with the planting of potatoes, fertilizers will be applied to feed the soil, then the correct dosage must be set. The dosage of fertilizers is set in accordance with the instructions attached to them, as well as taking into account the condition of the soil, the planned yield, the characteristics of the cultivated variety and other factors. It should also be borne in mind that fertilization should be carried out at a distance of 6-7 cm from the seed tubers.

After completing all the steps to adjust the equipment, the loading tank is filled with seed material, which is pre-calibrated into fractions. Then the planter is connected to the walk-behind tractor using a coupling mechanism. When using a potato planter, it should be borne in mind that its use is possible only on a pre-treated area. The soil on it should be loose, finely cloddy, without breakup furrows and ridges.

Proper adjustment of planting depth, seed cover height and distance between potatoes in a row ensures good and high-quality work of the potato planter. The friendliness of seedlings, the uniformity of maturation of tubers, as well as the accuracy of subsequent processing of rows and mechanized harvesting of potatoes will depend on this.

For farming potato planter for walk-behind tractor- just an indispensable device. Its functions include not only planting potatoes, but also fertilizing the soil. With this equipment, you can evenly distribute planting material and facilitate agricultural work. You can save money on buying a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor by making it yourself according to dimensions, drawings and pictures.

How to make a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor yourself

You need to start manufacturing agricultural equipment in order to assemble the frame. This requires a steel channel of the eighth standard size. Since the potato planter is designed for small-sized equipment, the bunker itself should be small, no more than twenty kilograms.

  1. Inside it is necessary to install a vertical elevator. It should have bowls with a diameter of about eight cm. In order for the mechanism to work, it must be attached to the wheel where the chain drive will work.
  2. In this mechanism, according to the drawings and pictures, there should be a pipe for the withdrawal of seeds, which is fixed under the lift with a raking part.
  3. An asterisk with a diameter of eighteen cm must be connected by a chain to the sprocket of the walk-behind tractor, so the coupling will be carried out.
  4. The transmission chain can be removed from the bike. Due to this, the distance between the holes with potatoes will be approximately 35 cm.

The potato planter can be used not only specifically for planting potatoes, it is easy to plant other vegetables with it, the main thing is to choose the right adjustment. Before proceeding with the manufacture of a potato planter, it is necessary to make a drawing and detailed measurements. Whatever the mechanism is, it must always have its own frame, to which all subsequent parts will be attached. In other words, the frame is the foundation.

Potato planter drawing

  1. In the case of a planter, a part of a steel channel is taken as a frame, something like a pair of spars is made from it, which are connected by pieces of steel.
  2. In front, a steel arch is attached by welding, as well as two rings that will serve as fastenings for the lower link.
  3. Lamellar supports are attached to the sides of the frame, which will be the ejaculatory mechanism.
  4. After all that has been done, it is worth fixing the frame with steel strips.
  5. The arch can be strengthened with a steel sheet bracing. They should be cut in the shape of a triangle.
  6. The hopper clings to the bracket with bolts.

How to make a hopper for a potato planter

In order to make a container for bulk materials, you need plywood about 1 mm thick. You need to cut the details with a jigsaw according to the drawings, pictures or ready-made templates. Then everything is processed with drying oil. The finished product can be painted with paint, but it should be borne in mind that it must be waterproof. The inside of the hopper should be covered with rubber, this will help to avoid deformation of the tubers.

Do-it-yourself potato planter for a walk-behind tractor collected. We hope that the dimensions, drawing, pictures and videos will help you correctly assemble attachments for a mini tractor or walk-behind tractor of any model. Make farming easier by making your own accessories.

One of the favorite root crops for the majority of the population is potatoes. Therefore, almost every owner of a personal plot plants and then digs up potatoes. To facilitate manual labor, there are many technical devices and devices.

To simplify the work with potatoes, craftsmen make potato peelers and potato planters with their own hands. For example, using a walk-behind tractor or a mini-tractor with a potato planter, you can grow much more potatoes than usual. For a walk-behind tractor, there are many options for devices. Some of them will be discussed in this article.

Before a home-made potato planter is made, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the basic parameters of planting a root crop. The unit must comply with two important parameters:

  • Potatoes should be planted at the same distance from each other. A fixture with an adjustable spacing is best.
  • The depth of planting tubers should be the same. In this case, the same period of plant emergence is expected.

There may be several design options. For potatoes, the planter can be single-row, two-row, three-row and four-row. The parameters largely depend on the type of frame used when assembling the frame. A container for root crops is installed on the frame.

A homemade potato planter should be assembled on the basis of a prepared drawing and diagram. They can be developed independently, depending on the availability of material, or you can take ready-made drawings and diagrams and modify them to fit your needs. Before starting work, it is advisable to check all dimensions and data.

Manual potato planters

In addition to mechanized devices for walk-behind tractors, there are also manual options, which make it easier to plant root tubers, however, they require certain physical effort. Such devices are easy to manufacture and have many options:

  • The simplest is a cone-type punch. The device goes deep into the ground to a certain depth, but physical effort is applied for this. In the process, a hole is created into which the potato root is lowered. Then the punch is removed and the hole is closed.
  • The next option is made from a metal pipe and is slightly improved. One end of the pipe is cut at an acute angle. A container for tubers is installed at the top, and a valve is installed in the pipe. Potato tubers are fed from above and poured out through the hole. Potatoes fall into the soil, and after removing the device, they are covered with earth.
  • The third type of device has the popular name "bird's beak", as it is made in the form of a beak and is driven into the ground in a closed position. When the "beak" is opened, potatoes are laid and at the same time remain in the soil.

Partially mechanized devices

This group includes devices for accelerating the process of planting potato tubers. Often such devices are made from a cart with a wheel. This option is well suited for areas with soft soil, which is prepared in advance.

The garden cart wheel is replaced by a rotary cutter, which can have several cells at once. The root crop is poured into the cart itself, from where it enters the cutter cells. In the course of travel, the cutter rotates and leaves the tubers in the soil. This process is also laborious and to facilitate it, a handle is welded on the front of the trolley, which makes it possible to work together.

Principle of operation and design

A unit suitable for working with the help of technology can be assembled independently. For example, a potato planter for a walk-behind tractor. In this case, the device will have a more complex design, since the individual parts will rotate due to the operation of the walk-behind tractor motor.

An axle on which the gear is installed is attached to the frame of the unit using a welding machine. A second gear is fixed above it, connected to the first chain drive. In this case, both gears will rotate due to the movement of equipment and wheels on the axle. Cups are attached to the chain, carrying potato tubers to the ground. Based on this, you can easily assemble the device with your own hands. After choosing a drawing and materials, you can start manufacturing.

Equipment classification

Devices differ in technological process:

  • Planting unsprouted potatoes. Root crops have a germinated sprout that can germinate in a few weeks.
  • For planting unsprouted tubers.
  • Mixed type.

By connection type:

  • Trailer device.
  • Semi-mounted.
  • Mounted.

Necessary materials

For self-production of a unit that will work together with a tractor or walk-behind tractor, you will need the following materials:

  • Square pipe or corner (channel will do).
  • Capacity (you can use the capacity of the washing machine or make it from metal or strong plywood). In the case of plywood, all walls are cut out for the future bunker and fastened together by means of steel squares. For normal protection against moisture, the material must be treated with drying oil.
  • Two gears (asterisks).
  • Chain.
  • Wheels.

When working on manufacturing, you will also need tools:

  • Bulgarian and cutting wheels.
  • Welding machine and electrodes.

For assembly, you will also need a hammer and other tools that every owner has. Assembly steps

To begin with, a frame is prepared, which can be made from a pipe or channel. Next, prepare the wheels. If the soil is loose enough, the wheels will not slip. In the absence of wheels, they can be made from a metal strip. The further design of the wheels can be varied depending on the materials used. For the hiller, it is better to use discs from old technology.

In order to assemble the device, you must do the following:

  • The beginning of the assembly, of course, refers to the frame structure, because all other parts are attached to the frame. For manufacturing, you can use a channel with a minimum thickness of 8 mm for good strength. Two spars are welded from the channel, which are connected transversely with steel strips. It is advisable to use at least three pieces.
  • An arch and mounting forks are welded on the front, which go to the central link.
  • To reinforce the frame, you will need two steel, inclined beams, which are fixed with the reverse side in the middle of the arch. After that, the seatpost support is attached, which can be made from a suitable corner and attached to the spar.
  • A bracket is attached to the inclined beams. A container for the root crop will be attached to the beams.
  • The tank can be lined with rubber or similar material to keep the potatoes from breaking.
  • An axle with wheels and a scarf is attached.
  • As an axis, you can take a pipe and install trunnions at the ends for attaching wheels. Dimensions are taken depending on the diameter of the pipe and the presence of other components. The trunnions, of course, after being installed in the pipe with the help of pins, are scalded.
  • Install the hubs and after installing the bearings, you can put the wheels.
  • The ripper holder is a square of steel rods that are welded.
  • The seeder is made of a pipe, with a diameter of 100 mm. The pipe must be thick, at least 3 mm thick. Otherwise, the design may bend.
  • A furrow cutter is welded to the bottom of the sower, which is made of a steel sheet with a thickness of 6 mm or more.
  • The seat and footrest must be attached to the frame.

The wheels can be made from an old gas bottle. 150 mm in diameter for a homemade design will be enough. Wheel spokes are made from improvised materials, it can be either bars or sheets of sheet steel. Pieces of corners are welded to the surface of the wheels around the circumference to reduce the compaction of the soil by the wheels. As wheels, disks from old wheels of a suitable diameter can also be used.

The seat structure itself can be made from welded corner pieces, and the seat is knocked down from wooden boards. For convenience, it can be equipped with foam rubber and covered with fabric.

A do-it-yourself potato planter for a mini-tractor and drawings can be made according to the same schemes, and the dimensions can be reviewed and changed to fit your parameters. There is no certain value what it will be, a walk-behind tractor or a mini-tractor, the main thing is that the traction is performed by equipment, and not by a person.

The general landing process looks something like this:

  • Potatoes should be filled in the tank. If the area is large, then bags with root tubers are placed on top, which saves time after planting potatoes from the bunker.
  • One person controls the equipment, and the second sits on the seat of the device.
  • The movement of equipment is best carried out at a speed of about 1 km / h.
  • A man sitting on a potato planter monitors the planting of tubers.
  • Root crops fall into the ground and are covered with earth using discs.

It is important to properly set up the hiller. Indeed, with the right setting, it will not crush the soil and will not deeply sink potato tubers. The hillock of the row should be even, soft and loose, and compaction is carried out after precipitation in a natural way.

A home-made potato planter can have a significant weight, therefore, before attaching to a walk-behind tractor, it is necessary to install a counterweight on the walk-behind tractor. In this case, the unit will not turn over in the opposite direction from the device.

Depth adjustment

The depth of removal of the soil layer can be adjusted by adjusting the discs. For this:

  • The stepladder, which presses the support against the rack, is adjusted by loosening.
  • The angle of the discs is changed by turning them in the desired direction.

The hiller is best installed on springs for uniform hilling on uneven soil surfaces.

Upon completion of the planting of the root crop, you can loosen the ground, which has been trampled down from the wheels of the walk-behind tractor. In this case, you can use a cultivator or the blades themselves, pre-installed on the fixture. The degree of immersion of the blades is desirable to develop adjustable.

Why you need a fertilizer dispenser

When creating a homemade potato planter, you can build a fertilizer dispenser, thanks to which the simultaneous work of planting potatoes and supplying fertilizer to the soil will be carried out. The phenomenon is quite common, since when manually planting root crops, a mixture of chicken manure and ash is often used, as well as manure and phosphate fertilizers.

Finish lining

The last and final stage of creating a potato planter is carried out at the request of the owner. This stage involves cleaning the seams and painting the unit itself. Before painting, you need to clean the dirt and rust from the metal. It must be remembered that painted metal will last longer, while also looking aesthetically pleasing.

Making a homemade potato planter and drawing up detailed dimensions can be a great way to save money that is not spent on purchased options. It also reduces the amount of physical labor involved.

Self-assembly of the unit is a complex process. In this connection, you need to decide in advance whether to take on the job yourself or call specialists and whether to take it at all. Of course, savings are saved, but certain technical knowledge is required.
