Summarizing

You should not hope that a trailer for a walk-behind tractor, made by yourself, will cost you completely free or require minimal costs. Of course, you will still have to invest some money, but the amount will be several times less than the market value of the trailer for the walk-behind tractor.

Greetings to readers of the Homemade site - HERE, in this article I want to tell you my version of how to make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands. The trailer was made for the Neva walk-behind tractor, and it looked massive.

Before constructing a trailer, it is necessary to remove all the necessary dimensions from the walk-behind tractor.

In my case, the height to the bottom of the hitch is 320 mm. sleeve length 71 mm.

As an axis, I used a bridge from a Muscovite, first I pulled out the gearbox from it (I needed it for) and plugged the place of the gearbox with a plug made from a 2 mm sheet. I also used wheels from a Muscovite.

To visualize the dimensions, I made a simple drawing of the trailer.

In order to reduce the load on the coupling unit, it is necessary to move the axle forward.

The trailer frame is 1900 x 1060 mm, made of corrugated pipe 40 x 60 x 2 mm. In order to prevent the trailer floor from being pressed through, it is necessary to make three jumpers across the frame.

The carrier is made of a round pipe and its offset is 1300 mm from the trailer to the mounting hole. For strength, the length of the pipe must be sufficient to reach the first jumper. In my case, the length of the pipe is 1750 mm. Weld it to the frame, best through the corners, then it must be reinforced with two gussets.

The rotary unit consists of a sleeve, which is made of high-strength steel, the wall thickness is 10 mm, and a shaft. The shaft is inserted into a thick-walled pipe and locked at the back, then grabbed from the bottom to the pipe. It is best to weld pipes together through 4 mm plates.

In order for the trailer to be in a horizontal position when uncoupled, it is necessary to make a step and tighten the spring.

We weld the bridge on braces. The height of the trailer (clearance) should be such that when coupled to the walk-behind tractor, it is horizontal.

The height of the sides is 300 mm, they are made of corrugated pipe 40 x 20 x 2. There are two jumpers on the longitudinal sides, and one on the transverse ones. The jumpers are necessary so that the galvanized sheet with which they will be closed does not play. Only the tailgate opens. Loops can be made from a tube and a round rod, or purchased from a store. The locks are made like on regular sides; a rod bent at 90 degrees is inserted into the tube and locked on both sides; the tube is welded to the side that cannot be opened. A section of strip with a cutout for the rod is welded onto the openable side.

The wings are made of 2 mm sheet steel. In order to bend them evenly and without much effort, it is necessary to make cuts with a grinder in the places of bending.

The platform for the feet is made of corrugated pipe 40 x 20 x 2 at a slight angle for convenience. The box under the seat consists of a frame that is covered with sheet steel, 1.2 - 1.5 mm. To make it lighter, galvanized sheeting can be riveted. The top of the box is covered with a seat, which is made on hinges.

Preface

Having decided to use a walk-behind tractor to transport goods, you have to decide which trailer to choose for it. You can make the cart yourself, taking into account your requirements for it and the capabilities of a manual mini tractor.

We determine the main characteristics of the trailer - we focus on factory models

The design of the cart for the walk-behind tractor is not super complex. If you have an angle grinder, electric welding and a drill, almost any owner of a manual mini tractor can make a trailer on their own. The main thing is that before assembling the trolley, correctly draw up its drawing or sketch, and then, strictly according to it, carry out all the work. To do this, you first need to decide on the main characteristics of the trailer: load capacity, dimensions and some others. To simplify this procedure, it is recommended to focus on factory-made, industrial models of walk-behind carts.

Factory trailers are produced with a carrying capacity ranging from 300 kg to 1000 kg with bodies of different sizes. These parameters depend on which walk-behind tractor the trolley is intended for use with, or, more precisely, on its technical characteristics. In accordance with this, there are 3 main types of trailers: heavy, medium and light manual mini tractors.

With heavy ones, power over 10 hp. Walk-behind tractors, as a rule, use single- or two-axle carts with a body 2–3 m long and 1.2 m wide. Such trailers are designed to transport cargo weighing 500–1000 kg.

For medium hand mini tractors - with power from 4.8 to 10 hp. – single-axle bogies with body sizes of 1.0×1.5 m, 1.1×1.4 and similar are oriented. Their carrying capacity is 300–500 kg.

With a power of up to 4.8 hp, single-axle trailers with a body 0.85–1.15 m long and 1 m wide are usually used. The load capacity of these carts is no more than 300 kg.

The height of the sides of factory standard trolleys for walk-behind tractors is 30–35 cm. On heavy-duty trailers, side railings of a frame structure are installed, the height of which is 50–60 cm.

To make loading and unloading easier, the rear side of the trolleys is foldable and removable. On some models, in addition to the rear one, both side ones can be opened and removed, which increases the convenience of filling the body with cargo and emptying it.

All standard trailers are manufactured as tippers. On models for medium and light walk-behind tractors there is no hydraulic lifting cylinder and this function is implemented through the design of the trolley. The body on the trailer is installed so that its center of gravity and the load located in it is located on the rotary axis aligned with the wheel pair of the trolley. This balancing greatly facilitates manual tipping.

Carts with a lifting capacity of over 350 kg are equipped with a mechanical brake in accordance with safety regulations.

This is due to the fact that when descending a steep slope, it is impossible to extinguish the inertia of movement of a loaded trailer with only the 1st brake of a hand-held mini tractor. Therefore, trolleys must be equipped with their own braking system.

How to properly design a trailer structure

So, in order to avoid repeated recutting of parts, alterations and, as a result, damage to the material during the assembly process of the trolley and endlessly protracted production, it is necessary to make a detailed drawing. To be more precise, there should be several of them: for all trailer components and, moreover, for each of them in several projections - views from different sides. For complex and critical parts, additional separate drawings should be made. The design of all nodes and their elements must be carefully drawn. Each part should be signed: indicate its name and all dimensions.

Using the finished drawings, it will be possible not only to visualize the volume and scale of the required work, but also to easily and quickly make a list of all the tools and materials that will be needed to assemble the trailer with your own hands. During the manufacture of the trolley, it may turn out that the prepared sketches initially missed some important nuances and/or there are no parts or components necessary for the design. Therefore, before starting work, the drawings should be carefully studied, thinking through and taking into account the following points:

  • what main and auxiliary components will be on the trailer and in what way they will need to be connected - by welding, twisting with bolts and nuts or riveting;
  • how movement and coordination with stationary rotating elements will occur - through a hinge, bushing, bearing or axle;
  • is there a desire to make parking supports;
  • is a tipper needed to mechanically unload the body;
  • and so on.

After this, the drawings may have to be supplemented with some clarifications, details, or missing components and elements that were not originally provided for should be added to them. But having done this, it will be possible to draw up a complete, correct inventory of the necessary materials and tools.

Before purchasing the necessary materials, you should look at what is available on the site or in the garage. It may well turn out that there will be something suitable for use when assembling a trailer. For example, a frame and other strength and support elements of the structure can be made from any round or profile pipes.

Development of drawings for trolleys with a load capacity of up to 350 kg

This trailer is suitable for any walk-behind tractor. There is no point in attempting to make a cart with a higher load-bearing capacity with your own hands, since, according to the above safety requirements, you will have to decide on equipping it with your own braking system. To construct or competently use a ready-made one, for example, from a light car, will simply be beyond the capabilities of most people. On the other hand, by and large, making brakes with your own hands is technically quite difficult in order to achieve from them the necessary level of traffic safety on a walk-behind tractor with a loaded trailer.

The choice of dimensions, body dimensions and the trailer itself primarily depends on the required load capacity. When determining them, one must proceed from the standards for factory trolleys given in Chapter 1. To make your own trailer with a carrying capacity of 350 kg, you can use the drawings that follow. The dimensions of both main and parts can be changed depending on the available materials. Also, these drawings can be used as a clear example of how to correctly develop a trolley design if you plan to assemble another version of it.

The first drawing is general. It has all the main components - body, frame, wheels, carrier - and dimensions.

Then a detailed drawing of the frame, which should be made of rectangular or round steel pipes. They are connected to each other by welding.

The body of this version of the trolley is made of boards, the thickness of which is 20 mm. The sides are all solid and do not recline.

Carrier drawing. The main load is taken by the joint of the rotary unit housing with the drawbar. Therefore, their connection is reinforced by 4 stiffening ribs, which are drawn on the section B–B.

For the rotary unit, as a complex critical element of the trailer, a separate drawing has been developed with detailed detailing of its structure and elements.

If other materials are used in the design of this walk-behind tractor cart, the permissible weight of transported goods may change.

What materials and how can you use to assemble a trailer with your own hands?

The easiest way to weld a frame is from a corner, channels and a profile pipe. I-beams and round pipes are also suitable.

A steel rod should be used as the wheel axle. Its diameter must be at least 30 mm, and its length must be at least 1070 mm, but the wheels must not protrude beyond the dimensions of the trailer. The rod is welded to the longitudinal hinge and corner supports of the frame.

The wheels are suitable from some kind of agricultural machinery or motorcycle stroller. The axle will need to be ground to fit the diameter of the bearings in their hubs.

It’s easier to make the body yourself from boards, fastening them at the corners with metal corners. We fix it to the frame with bolts. The optimal thickness of the boards is 20 mm. To make loading and unloading easier, it is better to make the sides folding. The bottom of the body can be made from edged boards, but the trailer will be more reliable and durable if you use sheet metal, preferably 2–3 mm thick. A car seat is perfect as a seat.

We make the hitch (swivel assembly) of the trolley with our own hands from a piece of steel of suitable size, drilling or machined a hole in it into which the console can easily fit. It is advisable to make the rotary assembly according to the scheme proposed in the above drawing - using bearings of a suitable diameter. Their outer cage is tightly seated in the coupling body or welded to it, and the console is inserted into the inner one without play.

After purchasing a walk-behind tractor and checking its operating capabilities, the owner wants to supplement this useful machine with a cargo trailer.

Having received one more wheel axle, the body and seat of the walk-behind tractor turns into a universal assistant that can be successfully used all year round.

A walk-behind tractor with a trailer will successfully replace not only a mini-tractor, but also a truck. And if the trailer has a tipper, then you don’t have to swing a shovel, unloading sand or crushed stone, black soil or manure.

A factory trailer for a walk-behind tractor can have a load capacity from 300 kg to one ton and different body sizes. Here everything depends on the technical characteristics of the walk-behind tractor, so trailer manufacturers adapt their products to light, medium and heavy hand tractors (walk-behind tractors).

Today, therefore, there are many varieties of cargo adapters available for them. The size range of bodies of such trailers is presented in the following options.

For light walk-behind tractors, trailers with a body 1 wide and 0.85-1.15 meters long are usually used. The load capacity of such adapters does not exceed 300 kg. The cost of light carts is around 12 - 15 thousand rubles.

For trolleys designed to work with medium-power walk-behind tractors (4.8-8 hp), the body size is 1.0 x 1.5 m or 1.1 x 1.4 m with a load capacity of 300 to 500 kg. The cost of cargo adapters of this class depends on the configuration and the manufacturing company and can range from 19 to 40 thousand rubles.

For heavy machines with a power of more than 10 hp. they use single-axle or two-axle trailer trolleys with a body 1.2 wide and 2 to 3 m long. They are capable of transporting loads weighing from 500 kg to 1 ton. The price of such adapters ranges from 42 to 60 thousand rubles.

The height of the sides of standard walk-behind trailers ranges from 30 to 35 centimeters. For heavy-duty trolleys, frame side guards with a height of 50-60 cm are used.

Trailers with a carrying capacity of more than 350 kilograms are equipped with a mechanical brake. This is required by safety regulations. When moving down a steep slope, you will not be able to extinguish the inertia of a loaded trailer with just the brake of the walk-behind tractor. Therefore, when choosing a trailer for a heavy hand tractor, be sure to pay attention to the presence of this option.

A standard tipper trailer for light and medium walk-behind tractors does not have a lifting hydraulic cylinder. The body is installed in such a way that the center of gravity of the load is on the rotating axis. Such central balancing significantly facilitates the process of manual tipping.

To increase the convenience of loading and unloading, some trailer models, in addition to the rear one, also have two side opening removable sides.

Trailer bodies are most often made of painted galvanized sheet, painted black steel sheet or impact-resistant plastic. The first option is the highest quality and most durable, although the most expensive.

Self-production of a trailer for a walk-behind tractor

The design of the cargo adapter for the walk-behind tractor cannot be called extremely complex. If you have an electric welder, an angle grinder and a drill, almost every owner of a hand tractor can make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with their own hands.

The main structural elements, the manufacture of which will require a drawing or detailed diagram, are the frame, carrier and body.

1 — mounting bracket for walk-behind tractor; 2 – rotary console, 3 – carrier; 4 – footrest; 5 — seat (20mm board); 6 – trailer frame; 7 - body side made of 25 mm board; 8 — frame support beam (block 50×50mm); 9 – fixing bolt of the M8 hinge; 10 – rear hinge unit; 11 - wheel

Studying the design of the trailer for the walk-behind tractor shown in the figure, you will notice that the driver is connected through the rotary unit and the console to the trailer module of the walk-behind tractor. The second end of the carrier is inserted into the central tube of the frame.

The “pipe-in-pipe” design forms a kind of long hinge. It allows the wheels of the trailer to change their position independently of the wheels of the walk-behind tractor while overcoming holes and bumps. This solution avoids deformation of the trailer structure.

1 - swivel unit; 2 – “drawbar” (round pipe 60 mm); 3 – footrest frame (angle 25 mm); 4 – stiffeners

The articulated coupling of the walk-behind tractor with the trailer is made using a console - a steel axle. It stands in the rotating block of the carrier on bearings. A flange is welded to the top of the console, with which it is attached to the hitch of the walk-behind tractor.

To strengthen the junction of the drawbar with the body of the rotary unit, you need to use 4 stiffening ribs from a steel strip 4 mm thick.

When making a homemade trailer for a walk-behind tractor, its frame is welded using several types of rolled metal: angle, rectangular and round pipes. The supporting frame must be strong and rigid so that when moving with a full load, its structural elements do not deform.

1 - brace (corner 20 x 20); 2 - seat frame (corner 20×20); 3 — seat posts (corner 40×40); 4.5 - front struts (pipe 40×20); 6 — body frame strapping (angle 40×40); 7, 8 – wheel axle stands (angle 32×32); 9.10 - rear struts (pipe 40x20); 11 - reinforcing cross member (angle 40×40), 12 - central pipe 58×4; 13 - axle (30 mm rod), 14 - gusset (4 mm sheet).

To fix the carrier pipe in the central pipe of the frame, drill a hole through it and insert a bolt with a lock nut and a pin. In this case, you need to cut a long “window” in the central pipe.

In it, the fixing bolt passing through the carrier pipe will be able to move around the axis of the trailer without moving in the longitudinal direction. This is the final operation necessary for the reliable operation of the “pipe-in-pipe” joint, which we described above.

To make a wheel axle, you need to take a high-quality steel rod with a diameter of 30 mm. It is connected to the central pipe of the frame, the platform frame from the corner and the struts by electric welding.

The fixed body can be made from 25 mm boards or its sides can be made from a steel sheet 1.5 mm thick, welded onto vertical posts from a 40x40 mm corner. If there is a need to open the sides, then several hinges need to be welded to the frame, to which the side frame will be attached. It is necessary to weld bolts to the corners of the frame, which will fix the sides in the transport position.

In a properly balanced trailer for a walk-behind tractor, the center of gravity of the load is located closer to the front side and does not extend beyond the axis of rotation of the wheels. This requirement must be taken into account when drawing up a drawing of a homemade structure.

You can use passenger car wheels as trailer wheels by purchasing them complete with hubs. Before installing the wheels on the axle, you need to carefully machine its seats to the inner diameter of the wheel hub bearings and equip them with a lock nut with a locking cotter pin.

Using a walk-behind tractor on the farm often requires additional attachments. You can save on its purchase by making a trailer for the walk-behind tractor with your own hands. This work is simple and accessible to anyone with a little plumbing skills.

Possible trailer options

Trailers for walk-behind tractors most often fail due to exceeding the permissible load. Therefore, you should first decide on the main types of work for which the model is intended and the volume of transportation. The following options are possible.

Light trailer. The model, designed for a load capacity of 50-70 kg without the weight of the driver, can easily be made from an ordinary garden cart with one axle. It is enough to weld a towing mechanism to it and make a stand for the seat.

Universal option suitable for transporting small loads weighing up to 120 kg on areas with uneven terrain. The U-shaped frame is welded from an I-beam. A towbar from a plow is attached to the drawbar.

Heavy model with rubber running is the most rational, although a little more expensive. It allows you to use all the capabilities of the walk-behind tractor and extends its service life by decades. To manufacture it, you need to purchase a metal profile of the required size and some spare parts for the automobile chassis.

Necessary materials

The set of materials and equipment required for work consists of:

  • electric welding machine;
  • Bulgarians;
  • electric drills with drills of different sizes;
  • ten electrodes No. 4;
  • steel profile - tubular square with dimensions 40X40 20 m long and 20X40 15 m long;
  • a steel pipe, the internal diameter of which corresponds to the external size of the bearing at the hub;
  • sheet metal 2 mm thick with an area of 2x3 m;
  • two hubs in a set from a Moskvich car of the M2140 or M 412 brand;
  • two wheels from it, in normal technical condition;
  • two garage door awnings.

The main dimensions can be selected independently, depending on the type of work, for example, 150X200 cm. The height of the homemade trailer is selected in such a way that it has a horizontal position in working condition. The trailer's carrying capacity for a conventional walk-behind tractor should not exceed 500 kg. For powerful walk-behind tractors with a 12 hp engine. With. the load capacity parameter may be greater. The trailer can be attached to the walk-behind tractor using a standard plow hitch or you can make it yourself. The carrier is made from a round pipe with a distance of 1.3 m from the trailer to the mounting hole.

Housing welding

To make the skeleton of a homemade body, you should:

  • cut a square metal profile;
  • weld a rectangular frame from longitudinal and transverse spars;
  • make a couple of transverse spacers inside it to strengthen the underbody;
  • then cut and weld the sides of the trailer - 4 pieces, each 50 cm high;
  • sew up the sides with steel sheets and weld them to the base of the body;
  • line the bottom with sheet metal and fasten it to beams made of metal profiles;
  • install the tailgate using door hinges so that it can be folded back when unloading;
  • if desired, you can make the sides folding;
  • treat the structure with anti-rust and coat with primer.

Chassis

The most important part of the work is the installation of the chassis. First you need to prepare the wheel axle. Any wheels can be adapted, but a trailer for a walk-behind tractor made with rubber wheels will make it easier to control and increase driving safety. The axle is firmly welded to the side members at several points and to the longitudinal hinge. Its length must be chosen taking into account that the wheels do not protrude beyond the dimensions of the homemade body.

For better fixation of the axle, corner supports are used. The running gear must be installed strictly parallel to the transverse beam of the frame. The use of a tubular axle will increase the strength of the structure when the permissible load is exceeded. The position of the hubs in the pipe should ensure minimal wheel runout.

Making a trailer hitch

Effective use of various attachments on a walk-behind tractor is impossible without a high-quality hitch. You can do it yourself, saving on the purchase of a factory mechanism. When manufacturing a coupling device, it is necessary to ensure:

  • compatibility of sizes for walk-behind tractor and attachments;
  • simplicity and reliability in operation;
  • the ability to configure equipment to perform a specific task.

The main part of the hitch is a U-shaped bracket with mounting holes. It is attached through them using pins:

  • On the one side- to the walk-behind tractor;
  • on the other side– to a trailer or other attached equipment.

The material for this unit can be a channel of the required size. The holes must be of a certain diameter. The pins are made of high-strength steel. The position of the device is changed using a lever. The coupling unit is located under the steering control.

Advantages and disadvantages of a homemade trailer

When there is a need to use a trailer for a walk-behind tractor on a farm, many are faced with a choice: what is more profitable - buying a device or making a trailer with your own hands? Everyone makes their own decision, depending on their skills in craftsmanship and existing prices on the market. The advantages of a homemade unit are the ability to:

  • determine its dimensions according to your needs;
  • change some parameters;
  • choose strong and durable materials that will provide the walk-behind tractor trailer with a long service life;
  • use improvised devices that will save money on factory samples.

A DIY trailer can be equipped with other useful devices, for example, reflectors and brakes. To manage, you need to acquire some skills that will take a little time.
