Since ancient times, leather and leather products have been highly valued by people - after all, leather served as the first clothing of man, the most primitive housing was built from it and used for protection from the cold, as blankets. Interest in this material has not been lost over many centuries; designers are still developing interesting projects that allow the use of leather and products made from it in quite diverse qualities.

Reasons for the popularity of leather products

Throughout human history, leather has been valued quite highly:

  • it provided reliable protection from the wind and did not get wet from rain, i.e. allowed a person dressed in leather clothes and shoes to feel comfortable in any weather,
  • it retains heat well,
  • has an attractive appearance,
  • its surface is soft and pleasant to the touch,
  • It is characterized by both strength and elasticity,
  • has a long service life,
  • It does not require special care.

Thanks to these qualities, leather has been rightfully considered a noble material for thousands of years.

In the modern world, an increasing number of people strive to use the safest products in their everyday life, the manufacturing technology of which does not harm the environment and does not cause allergies in people who touch them. For example, no matter how highly practical and durable floors made from artificial materials are, the properties of natural materials will always be much more valued. Based on this, companies producing floor coverings have created a completely new natural product - leather flooring.

Leather floors and their features

This innovative product consists of a shockproof and high-strength MDF board, with a top serviceable layer made from genuine compressed leather. It follows that leather flooring combines both reliability and harmlessness, as well as a comfortable, cozy top layer.

Leather flooring does not deform under heavy loads and is guaranteed to last a long time, pleasing the appearance of its owners. The top layer is made only from genuine leather without impurities and additives, using the method of strong pressing. This process is performed using special, modern, advanced equipment. Such processing of an initially soft and pliable material provides high density, at which it is practically impossible to cause mechanical damage. Also, over time, the leather floor will not wear out.

Those who like to move around the apartment barefoot will find great satisfaction: the leather layer is very soft, pleasant to the touch and warm. For people suffering from various types of allergic reactions and problems associated with the respiratory system, it is impossible to imagine a better flooring option than leather flooring.

Along with all the listed advantages, it is worth noting the fact that the surface of such a floor is absolutely non-slip, and therefore stable and non-hazardous. Installing a leather floor will not take much time and effort. The material is produced in the form of boards of a fixed size, equipped with the UNICLICK system, which does not require gluing or other fixation. Each of the boards has a cork backing, which provides noise absorption and is a heat-saving element. Caring for such a floor will not cause much trouble and will not require the purchase of additional care products.

Leather in the interior - a variety of textures and shades

Leather fragments of newfangled designs or solid leather structures may differ in both color and texture. Modern technologists can produce leather whose texture resembles, for example, snake or crocodile skin. Such innovations were developed to bring extraordinary, exclusive ideas into reality.

Also in the developments there are materials of a calmer look: almost smooth material, on which single, measured lines of impressions from folds are noticeable. There are leather coverings with a very light, touching texture with a grain micro-relief surface.

Manufacturers try to produce each type of texture in several color variations. Basically, the palette used is reduced to natural, calm colors: ivory, black, brown.

Leather floors in the interior

As already mentioned: leather flooring is soft and warm to the touch. The decision to decorate the floor with leather will give owners a lot of pleasant physical and aesthetic moments. This decoration option is rightfully considered ideal for living space.

The reliability and strength of the material are beyond doubt, because production is carried out using the latest technologies. The material undergoes special processing that meets international standards. All this is done in order to make cleaning and maintenance of the premises as easy as possible.

All cleaning actions are limited to collecting debris using a vacuum cleaner and washing with a slightly damp cloth. Any substances containing chemically active elements are not used when cleaning leather floors. Cleaning a leather floor can be compared to cleaning an ordinary wood floor.

Experts insist on familiarizing yourself with and implementing the following important tips related to the proper use of leather floors:

  • without fail, all furniture (cabinets, chairs, armchairs, tables, sofas, beds, etc.) located in the interior must have felt pads glued to the legs
  • If you have furniture with wheels attached to its legs, you should purchase rugs on which it will move
  • Do not use any abrasive materials on leather material
  • It is better to equip the entrance to an apartment or house with a special mat that will trap street dust and debris
  • When rearranging furniture in a room, it is imperative not to drag it from place to place, but to carry it; if necessary, you can use the help of physically trained persons.

Leather floor - price worthy of quality

It’s worth noting right away that the cost of this product cannot be classified as low. The leather covering belongs to the elite class. Square meters of leather flooring can be purchased at a price of 2,500 rubles. It all depends on what (more or less democratic) policy a specialized store is pursuing for the sale of goods of this type. In principle, this price can be called more or less acceptable. After all, having bought such a newfangled coating, the whole family will admire and enjoy it throughout the entire period of operation.

Western manufacturing companies produce unique types of premium leather coverings. The top leather layer is 2.5 mm. In addition, it is coated with several layers of specially developed water-based varnish. The middle layer is 6 mm. For its production, high-quality HDF board is used. The bottom layer (backing) consists of 2 mm cork. In addition to everything, the set with such a floor includes skirting boards of the appropriate color and size.

Corkstyle leather floors - originality, comfort and warmth in your home

Original Corkstyle floors will enhance the interior of any home with their luxurious look. They can be used to decorate a children's room, kitchen, living room, bedroom or hallway. The high quality of leather and durability make it possible to lay such a floor even in office premises.

The high strength quality of the leather material is given by the high-strength acrylic-polyurethane varnish X-Protect applied in three layers; its production process uses the latest developments in the field of nanotechnology, providing it with extreme durability.

Laying of leather floors is carried out using floating technology, without rigid attachment to the base, using the UNICLIC glue-free joining system.

Features of Corkstyle leather floors are:

  • possibility of applying an additional layer of protective varnish,
  • possibility of restoring the varnish coating,
  • the possibility of applying chamfers to the ends, but it will be necessary to apply an additional layer of varnish.

When it comes to nobility and a high level of comfort, the options of using low-quality materials in interior design disappear. Today, special attention is also paid to naturalness, that is, the environmental friendliness of a particular resource. When choosing a floor covering, this is an equally weighty argument.

So, what do manufacturers offer today? Wooden, cork, glass floors, many varieties of laminate, parquet and floor tiles made from environmentally friendly materials. But the not quite familiar coating, about which everyone is already shouting: “New!!!”, is considered leather floors. Let's talk about them.

Leather in interior decoration

There is no need to prove that leather has been valued for a long time. You have probably already used at least one thing made of high-quality genuine leather and were able to appreciate its inherent qualities. In residential and non-residential premises, leather is used to decorate walls, furniture, ceilings, and various accessories. There is only one that can be matched in style to any interior, which is worth it!

Not so long ago, leather floors, which were not previously used for the reason that there was no processing method that would allow them to be durable and wear-resistant, have become popular. This type of flooring very quickly became fashionable and became an item of luxury, nobility, and high-priced interior design.

Leather floors - what are they?

Today leather floors are produced using modern technologies for pressing genuine leather, which is then used as the top layer of floor covering. The base is HDF, porcelain stoneware or cork. The use of a cork layer in leather tiles promotes good sound and heat insulation.

Leather flooring is made in the form of tiles of different sizes, which are then attached using the same technology as laminate or. Therefore, installing leather floors is a simple process, and the main costs will only be on the material itself, which, by the way, is one of the most expensive floor coverings in the world.

Leather floors - strength test

To ensure that the leather on the flooring lasts longer and retains its attractive appearance, it is treated with wax and special oil. This impregnation saves the skin from scratches, cracks, and trampling. Also, finishing varnish is actively used in finishing leather for floors, which significantly increases the strength of the floor covering.

Modern leather flooring – color and texture

Leather floors are popular, made in a natural palette of colors - from light beige to dark brown and black. They can be smooth or embossed, depending on your desires, preferences and interior style. Leather flooring can be crafted in an exotic embossed pattern reminiscent of crocodile or snakeskin, with a grainy pattern or a wavy pattern - the choice is yours.

Leather floors in the interior

The scope of application of leather floors is wide. They are perfect for residential buildings and apartments, for reception areas, conference rooms and offices in offices, and sales areas of luxury stores. In residential areas, leather floors are most often used as bedroom flooring. But they also have a place in the kitchen and living room.

Leather flooring looks aesthetically pleasing and rich, highlighting your original taste. Not only walking barefoot, but also sitting and lying on such a soft floor is warm and cozy; you always feel comfortable in luxury.

Leather flooring - an alternative solution

Designers recommend using leather tiles in finishing and decorating individual interior elements - walls, furniture, doors. For example, a very interesting solution could be to decorate the wall of the headboard with leather, bedside tables, the wall near the hanger in the hallway, or wardrobes.

Leather floors - operation and care

When using leather flooring indoors, you should follow the usual operating rules:

  • do not drag heavy objects, but carry them;
  • attach felt pads to the legs of tables, chairs, sideboards and other furniture, especially heavy ones;
  • when using furniture on wheels, for example, coffee tables or chairs and sofas, bedside tables, place a rug under them;
  • do not sand the leather floor with anything;
  • do regular cleaning.

Leather floors can be easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and wet cleaning without the use of chemicals. Leather tiles should be treated 1-2 times a year with a special compound that prolongs their service life. You can purchase such compositions not only from manufacturers, but also in construction stores.

Leather flooring comes in different types and can be produced in various formats: tiles, parquet, laminate. All these materials differ from each other only in size and fixation methods. Their internal structure is almost the same.

Leather flooring consists of several layers: top layer of leather (2.5 mm), cork backing (2-4 mm), HDF or porcelain stoneware. In this case, HDF is used for leather laminate and parquet, and porcelain stoneware is used for tiles.

The leather is subjected to several stages of preparation: dressing, tanning, applying varnish or beeswax, and dyeing.

For flooring, vegetable tanned calfskin (black leather) is most often used. To give it additional rigidity and strength, it is treated with a special impregnation, which also resists biological effects - insects, rodents, bacteria, fungi and mold will not grow and feed on such leather.

The way the source material is processed usually determines the final result. To give a special style to the interior, the leather can be dyed to match the colors of alligator, python, and so on.

Leather tiles are presented in three basic formats: 45x45, 60x30, 60x60 centimeters. There are, but much less frequently, the following sizes: 20x20, 30x45 centimeters (rectangular products). There are also octagons with a side length of 20 centimeters and hexagons with a side length of 20 or 30 centimeters.

The texture of the floor may also vary. Leather tiles and laminate can be smooth, textured, with or without patterns.

Pros and cons of leather floors

In ancient times, people covered the floors of their homes with animal skins. This is how the first leather coverings appeared. If earlier the arrangement of such a floor was due to forced necessity, because it was much easier to get an animal skin than a Persian carpet, then today the appearance of leather surfaces in homes is a new elite trend.

Such floor coverings are distinguished by their aesthetic appearance. In the latest designer collections of leather floor tiles you can find many products of various textures and colors. Outwardly, such modules resemble ceramic ones, but only until you touch them or step on such a floor with your bare feet. You will immediately feel the softness and warmth of this coating.

The advantages of leather flooring are:

  • Good sound insulation. Thanks to their special design, leather tiles do not allow noise to pass through.
  • High thermal insulation. It is pleasant to walk on this floor barefoot even in winter. It is not cold and perfectly maintains the room temperature.
  • Fire safety. Natural leather does not burn well, and the tiles are additionally treated with fire-retardant compounds.
  • Moisture resistance. The leather does not allow moisture to pass through, and if water gets on it, it will not lose its shape and appearance; it just needs to dry. In percentage terms, this figure is 7.4 units. For example, the moisture resistance of oak floors is 7.5%. Thus, you can use leather as a floor covering even in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Resistant to most dyes. Red wine, coffee, tea, ketchup, juices - all these food dyes can be easily washed off from leather floors with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, leaving no residue.
  • Ease of installation. Laying such a floor covering will not be difficult even on your own. Most leather tiles have a tongue-and-groove design, like laminate, so you only need to have simple tools to do all the installation work.
  • Ease of care. Leather floors can be vacuumed and wiped with a damp cloth, but without using solvents. It is treated with special solutions that simplify the cleaning process as much as possible.
  • Environmental friendliness. Leather is a natural material that is additionally processed with harmless compounds such as wax and vegetable tannins. Therefore, you can install such a floor without fear in residential areas, even bedrooms and children’s rooms.
However, this coating also has obvious disadvantages that should be taken into account before installing it:
  1. High cost of finishing material. The price of leather tiles per square meter can start from 4 thousand rubles.
  2. Intolerance to sudden temperature changes. Such a floor should be installed in heated rooms, otherwise the coating will quickly deteriorate.
  3. Intolerance to direct sunlight and hot water. Exposure to high temperatures may cause discolouration of certain areas. For the same reason, this coating is not suitable for installation over a “warm floor” system.
  4. Cannot be installed in high traffic areas. Recently, leather flooring material with high wear resistance has appeared on the construction market. This is achieved through varnish coating and hot pressing. However, even it should be placed with caution in corridors and hallways. And, of course, leather flooring is not the best solution for public and commercial establishments and reception areas.
It is not recommended to walk on such a floor in street shoes and place it on open or partially open areas - terraces, balconies.

Features of using leather flooring

Such flooring is a symbol of the high status of the owner. Therefore, you can find leather flooring in luxury apartments and houses with low traffic levels.

For rooms where people prefer to wear outdoor shoes, leather laminate or parquet will not be suitable, but porcelain stoneware tiles can be used. It is more durable and wear-resistant. You can also place it in elite country clubs, boutiques with small trading floors, and bosses' offices, where traffic is relatively low.

It is worth noting that the smaller the size of the tile, the more expensive it looks, and the design of the floor is more decoratively sophisticated. Accordingly, its price is higher.

If you intend to lay leather tiles on the floor in an office or public place, then make sure that they are treated with a special varnish. In a private house or apartment where you prefer to walk barefoot or sit on the floor, it is recommended to lay laminate or parquet with soft, pleasant-to-touch leather treated with wax impregnations.

Most often, leather floors are painted in natural shades - all tones of beige and brown. It is also common to find black and white floor tiles. These colors are usually used in combination with each other to create interesting custom designs.

Leather can be smooth, embossed, grained, patterned and imitate various colors of animals. However, since this is an elite and “discreet” material, it is customary to give preference to colors that can maximally emphasize the natural origin of the floor.

But to create avant-garde styles in the interior, you can use leather in bright colors. This is a great way to emphasize the originality of the room and make it as comfortable as possible. You can also install leather tiles in separate spots throughout the room to create accents.

Technology for installing leather covering on the floor

You can make a leather floor yourself. The main condition is the presence of a clean, dry, smooth rough surface. Otherwise, the installation of this coating is not much different from the installation of tiles or laminate and can be done using glue or a substrate.

Preparatory work before laying leather covering

Before proceeding with the installation of the leather floor, the sub-base should be carefully leveled. The maximum permissible height difference can be no more than two millimeters per meter.

To level large differences or holes or bumps, use a self-leveling mixture. You can also try to putty the defects.

After you have filled all the holes on the floor, it should be thoroughly cleaned (vacuumed), wait for the leveling mixtures to dry completely and treat it with a primer.

Attaching leather tiles to the floor

Leather tiles with a porcelain stoneware base should be laid, like regular ceramic ones, on a special adhesive that is suitable for working with such materials. Installation is carried out in a room where the temperature does not fall below 18 degrees Celsius.

Laying is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • We begin installation from any wall perpendicular to the windows.
  • We apply glue, which should resemble thick sour cream in consistency, onto the surface of the tile with a notched trowel and press it to the floor surface.
  • If the dimensions of one tile are more than 20x20 centimeters, then the adhesive composition must be applied to the surface of the subfloor.
  • Tap the laid tiles with a rubber mallet.
  • The simplest installation method is “seam to seam”. If you do not have experience, then you should not “experiment” with installing expensive leather tiles staggered or diagonally.
  • If it is necessary to trim individual elements, then we use a grinder.
  • To maintain the evenness of the seams, we use special crosses, which we pull out after the adhesive has dried.
  • Using a wooden beam or a building level, we regularly check the verticals and horizontals of the laid tiles.
After laying and drying the floor, it is recommended to treat the skin with a special varnish or cream that contains fat, honey or wax.

Laying leather laminate flooring

Leather laminate should be installed in the same way as regular wood laminate flooring. As a rule, such parts have a traditional tongue-and-groove system.

Installation instructions for leather laminate:

  1. Lay the leveling underlay on the subfloor. It is recommended to use extruded polystyrene foam.
  2. To make the joints invisible, we lay the laminate along the incidence of sunlight from the window.
  3. To minimize material consumption, we begin laying the first row from a whole panel, the second from half, and so on. To start the second row, use a segment from the first.
  4. We join the parts, inserting the tenon into the groove at an angle, and smoothly lower it to the floor.
  5. We use a mallet or beat the lamella through a wooden block with a hammer to join the laminate more tightly.
  6. We place each next row with an offset of ? from the previous one. This ensures greater durability of the coating.
  7. We leave expansion joints near pipes and walls one centimeter wide.
  8. We cut the last row lengthwise to achieve the desired width.
  9. If necessary, trim the panel using a jigsaw or hacksaw.
  10. Using a mounting paw, we join the cut board with the grooves of the previous row.

Rules for caring for leather floors

Although such flooring does not belong to the category of “capricious”, it should be cared for, adhering to certain rules. This will ensure the durability and attractive appearance of your leather floor tiles.
  • Do not move heavy objects on this surface.
  • It is recommended to attach felt pads to furniture legs so that they do not leave dents in the leather.
  • Place special small rugs under furniture on wheels (chairs, TV tables).
  • When cleaning, do not expose the coating to too much mechanical stress - do not rub with brushes or abrasives.
  • Do not wash leather floors using solvents or aggressive chemicals.
  • Treat the surface with special compounds from the manufacturer approximately twice a year. You can purchase these products at hardware stores.

The top layer in both cases consists of genuine pressed leather with the addition of natural oils, natural tannins and latex and has a thickness of about 2 mm. Leather floors are top coated with a heavy-duty water-based varnish that withstands mechanical impacts, such as heels, heavy furniture, etc. are quite high and this is perhaps the only drawback of this coating.
