The fence of the site serves not only as protection from outsiders, but also as an important decorative element that makes the first impression of the owner of the site. Passers-by and guests remember the house along the fence. Regardless of the cost of the material, installing a fence takes a lot of time and effort, so you want to ensure its maximum service life. The pillars perform the function of a supporting structure, and the durability of the entire fence depends on their quality and correct installation. The article will discuss how to properly install fence posts with your own hands.

What are fence posts?

  • The traditional material for the manufacture of pillars is considered wood. To date, wooden poles of proper quality are quite an expensive solution. They are made from solid hardwood logs. Pine, larch, ash, oak, acacia and mulberry are the most resistant to adverse environmental factors (temperature changes, humidity, mold fungi). In second place is a group of spruce and fir. Unsuitable for the manufacture of pillars are such species as birch, maple, linden, aspen, alder and beech. To increase the service life of wooden poles, additional treatments with antiseptic preparations and firing to charring are necessary. The choice of this type is often associated with the style of landscape design. As a rule, a wooden support is used for a fence made of the same material.

  • A universal and widespread solution is metal poles. They are equally well combined with a wooden picket fence, chain-link mesh and a metal profile. In addition, such a support is able to withstand a significant load. Metal is more durable than wood, but requires pre-treatment against rust. To extend the service life, the paint layer is updated annually. Two options are possible: hollow welded pipes of a certain diameter and from a metal profile with a square section. Strict requirements are imposed on the diameter of the pillars and the thickness of the metal, ensuring practicality and reliability of operation. The optimal diameter is 6 cm with a wall thickness of 2 mm. Fastening to a metal support log and other elements of the fence is simple and fast.
  • Asbestos-cement and concrete pillars characterized by a high rate of durability, but they also have a number of disadvantages, in addition to the high price. Asbestos-cement pipes are inconvenient when installing a fence, they are not combined with all materials, they are prone to rupture under the action of freezing water that has entered the hollow space through the open top. Concrete poles are rarely used and mainly for powerful and colorful fences.
  • brick pillars characterized by the complexity of installation and high decorativeness. Specialists with professional skills take part in the construction of such pillars, which greatly increases the cost of the support. Before installation, foundation equipment is required, on which the entire load of heavy pillars will be transferred. Durability is largely determined by the correct installation, otherwise the poles warp, and the fence needs to be reconstructed.

When choosing a material for pillars, they are guided by financial capabilities, characteristics, installation features and the requirements of the architectural style. Forged fence structures look spectacular with brick pillars.

Installation of wooden fence posts

  • To beat the perimeter of the site, it is better to use poles with a diameter of about 15 cm, for intermediate poles a diameter of about 10 cm is allowed. The tree needs to be dried and pre-treated with a solution of copper sulphate or a modern antiseptic preparation to kill microorganisms. The lower ends are tarred and wrapped with roofing material.
  • For better protection against moisture, the pillars are painted over with oil paint. When installed, they are oriented in such a way that the top of the once growing tree is at the bottom. This trick will prevent the rise of water along the microcapillaries and the accumulation of moisture inside the column.

  • A wooden support is installed mainly for lightweight structures, so its fastening can be quite simple. With the help of a drill, a hole is made about half a meter deep with a height of the above-ground part of the column up to 1.5 m. With an increase in the height of the fence, the depth of the embedding is also increased, observing the rule that the buried part should be 1/3 of the entire length of the column.
  • The diameter of the pit is twice the diameter of the column. The drill must be held strictly vertically to obtain an even, straight hole. Further, a layer of crushed stone or building expanded clay is laid out at the bottom of the recess to drain rainwater. The column is installed strictly vertically (its position is checked by a level), after which it is covered with rubble or broken bricks from the sides. As the material falls asleep, it is periodically compacted with a crowbar. After each tamping, the position of the post is checked.
  • For the durability of fences, wooden poles can be installed in metal sleeves, which serve as a casing for the entire recessed part. In this case, the sleeve should pass close to the tree, excluding the possibility of water penetrating inside. To do this, use metal cylinders of a slightly smaller diameter than that of the column.

How to install metal fence posts

  • The strength of metal poles can withstand even heavy structures and significant wind loads (corrugated fence), so they must be firmly fixed. For the installation of metal supports, concreting and driving into the ground are used.

  • There are two ways of concreting. In the first method, a hole is made of a slightly larger diameter than that of the column. And then the space between the vertically mounted post and the ground is filled with concrete. The second method is to fill the hole with concrete mortar and then install the post. In this case, a stronger fixation is provided.
  • Concreting is used on sandy soils with good water permeability and not prone to bulging.
  • Driving in pillars with a sledgehammer is the simplest and most reliable way, but it requires physical effort and skills. The post is hammered into a hole of a smaller diameter for a snug fit to the ground. This method is suitable for fences of light structures and is used on heavy soils with dense soil. A positive point is the ease of reconstruction of the fence in case of distortion - the pillars are aligned using the same sledgehammer.

You can buy metal poles with a spiral at the end. Screw piles are screwed into the ground, ensuring its sufficient compaction.

Installation of asbestos-cement fence posts

  • The most common pillars are about 12 cm in diameter. The asbestos-cement support is not considered strong, therefore it is only suitable for lightweight structures. With proper installation, the service life exceeds 50 years.
  • Pits are drilled with a depth of about 80 cm (with a column height of more than 2 m), making an expansion at the bottom. The expansion is poured with concrete, and the walls are reinforced with a roofing material tube, which should protrude by 15 cm. A wooden formwork is made around the protruding part of the roofing material. The pit is filled with concrete, but not completely. While the solution has not hardened, an iron rod or pin is inserted with a length slightly shorter than the pillar itself.

  • Further, after the rod is fixed with a mortar, a pole is put on and all the remaining space is poured with concrete to the edge of the formwork. At the same time, the structure does not come into contact with the ground at all and is securely fixed. To protect against rupture under the action of freezing water, the cavity of the pillars is poured with concrete to the very top, forming a convex cap to prevent water accumulation.
  • A less time-consuming method is also possible, similar to the installation of metal pipes, in which the pillars are buried in the ground and poured with concrete. But its use is allowed only on sandy soils.

Installation of brick pillars for the fence

  • The installation of brickwork pillars begins with the preparation of a strip foundation. To do this, a broken brick is laid in a dug trench and concreted. In place of the future pillar, strong reinforcement is mounted with several metal rods that will serve as a frame. You can use wide pipes.

  • The top of the foundation is covered with waterproofing material. Before starting laying, check the correctness of the markings. The first row is checked for evenness using a level. Bricks are laid out around the frame, and the resulting cavity is filled with concrete.

Installing brick pillars requires skill and is rarely done on your own without the involvement of specialists.

The method of installing pillars on heaving soils and with a close occurrence of groundwater

  • Heaving soils are dangerous because they can push the pillars to the surface along with the poured concrete. Already after 2-3 years, the promised durability of the fence may squint. The close occurrence of groundwater increases corrosion and decay, and also causes a change in the upper layer.
  • In such cases, it is necessary to use more time-consuming, but also more reliable methods of installing poles. Many practitioners advise to increase the depth of the pits below the level of groundwater passage. This method entails an overspending of the solution and does not always justify itself.
  • The following method is considered more efficient. Crushed stone or expanded clay is laid out at the bottom of the prepared hole with a layer of 20 cm. After installing the pillar, the space is also filled with crushed stone 15 cm to the ground level. These remaining 15 cm are poured with concrete. The crushed stone layer provides good drainage and does not present an obstacle to the flow of water. The concrete top serves as a guarantee of a strong fixation of the post. Although many builders in such cases refuse concrete altogether.

General steps for installing fence posts

  • After choosing the material for the pillars and the optimal installation method, they begin to prepare all the necessary tools. You will definitely need a garden drill, a shovel, crowbar, cord, building level, drainage material. Depending on the method chosen, a sledgehammer, roofing felt, a mortar container and cement may be required.
  • Responsible stage - planning and breakdown of the site. Along the perimeter, in place of future pillars, pegs are driven in, along which the twine is pulled. In this case, each peg should stand strictly opposite the neighboring one. In the corners, they plan to put poles of a larger diameter for a high load. The recommended length of one section - the distance between two pillars - is no more than 3 m. If the fence construction is heavy, then the distance is reduced to 2.5 m to avoid sagging.
  • After installing the first corner post, they proceed to the second corner post, aligning its height relative to the first one using a hydraulic level. Between the two pillars, two cords are pulled at the bottom and at the top, which will serve as markers when installing intermediate ones.
  • With a significant difference in height (more than 25 cm), it is planned to install additional poles and install a stepped fence. Auxiliary supports with greater strength are installed at the locations of gates and car gates.

  • When fixing the column, its position is checked by a vertical level. It is important that all the pillars are not only the same height, but also stand exactly. When using concreting, work on fixing the fence begins no earlier than 3-5 days to allow the solution to completely set and harden.

fence posts video

To install a fence in a summer cottage, you can do it yourself if you choose the most versatile method and material. At the same time, the fence will last quite a long time and without the annual hassle of repairs. The most popular recently are metal poles with chain-link mesh, often there are profile fences. It is impractical to build wooden fences in a budget version from low-grade wood. For more complex structures using asbestos-cement and brick supports, the help of specialists will be required.

A reliable and durable fence needs high-quality supporting elements. For this reason, summer residents should familiarize themselves with how to dig fence posts from various materials. Proper installation of load-bearing structures will increase the strength of the fencing element, emphasize its style and shape. Considering how to properly perform the work, keep in mind: the support frame installed according to the technological sequence will increase the life of the fence.

When is concreting contraindicated?

Pouring concrete pillars is a simple and reliable way to install them. But there are a number of factors under which there are indications in the driving or butting of the support. Experts highlight the following points:

  • possessions are located on heaving soils that sag in the spring;
  • high rainfall in winter. Melting snow leads to the destruction of the concrete base;
  • hard soils justify clogging - a quick way, convenient for arranging temporary hedges;
  • lightweight fence products. Concreting is successful for strengthening massive structures made of brick, concrete or solid sheet metal.

Carrying out work on the construction of a fence on problematic soil involves digging in, driving or butting a support. By selecting elements from various materials, you can reduce the load on the ground.

Types of materials for poles, their advantages and disadvantages

When choosing building materials for supporting elements, consider the strength, load-bearing capacity of the main web, and wind resistance. Manufacturers offer several types of elements for the construction of the fence:

wooden supports

Eco-friendly wooden poles are ideal for building lightweight structures - delimiting garden areas or temporary fences. Before installation, the wood is treated with special impregnations that prevent rotting and destruction. The maximum service life of lumber poles is 20 years.

Asbestos-cement pipes

Putting a fence structure on such supports is a reasonable decision. The material is distinguished by an affordable price, high performance. Asbestos cement products:

  • do not rot;
  • do not deform over time;
  • are easy to maintain.

The supporting elements have only one drawback - fragility. Asbestos sheet requires extra care during transportation and installation. The second nuance that needs to be considered is hollowness. To prevent splits, do not install posts in sub-zero or wet weather.

metal pipes

The optimal combination of quality and cost. A country fence made of metal picket fence, profiler, chain-link mesh, plastic or euro picket fence is securely placed on metal structures. Iron supports have a number of advantages:

  • strength, resistance to wind and mechanical stress;
  • high bearing capacity, thanks to which it is possible to install a fence made of solid metal sheets or asbestos-cement slate;
  • long period of operation - up to several decades;
  • the possibility of repeated use of the pipe;
  • fast installation and processing by special means;
  • increased weather resistance.

A dug-in or concreted element is connected to the fence sections using bolts, clamps, and welding.

Concrete supports

The large weight of the supporting elements implies reliable installation - the presence of a foundation. The frame of concrete pillars has advantageous advantages:

  • strength. M300-M500 brand cement is more reliable than wood;
  • long operational resource;
  • the possibility of decorating with stone, textured plaster;
  • ease of self-assembly.

The pillars have a significant mass, so it is better to strengthen them with a foundation. Owners who are counting on the installation of supporting pillars for a country fence without the need for concreting need to pay attention to other options.

Elements built from bricks

Pillars of brick form not only a stable base for the fence, but also serve as a decorative element. The construction of brick pillars with your own hands is a very laborious and costly process.
Each support has advantages and disadvantages. The main thing is that the material for the frame ensures the stability of the structure. The choice of specific material depends on the budget of the builder.

Where to start work?

The formation of supporting elements for the fence is carried out in several stages. A rational step would be to draw up a schematic work plan.

Preparatory activities

Construction tasks include the solution of the following issues:

  • design;
  • determining the location, marking and cleaning the area;
  • preparation of tools;
  • choice of raw materials for support;
  • development of design and binding of the fence to the landscape of the site.

Compliance with a step-by-step list will save you from unnecessary spending on building materials, and minimize time costs.

List of materials

Before installing fence posts, you should prepare construction tools, the list of which consists of:

  • borax;
  • scrap;
  • level;
  • hydraulic level;
  • roulettes;
  • shovels;
  • twine;
  • crushed stone;
  • water;
  • sand;
  • raw materials for supporting elements.

The use of the above tools does not require special skills and knowledge in carrying out construction work.

Fence layout

The fencing installation technology begins with the sequence of the following works:

  1. Clear the soil of vegetation, debris, roots.
  2. Make a marking of the territory.
  3. Calculate the number of supports for the frame.

The correct ratio of supporting structures to the mass of the fence increases the service life and reliability of the building.
The algorithm for marking the fence:

  1. We mount the supporting elements along the perimeter of the future frame within a radius of 2 - 3 meters from each other.
  2. To evenly distribute the load, we put pillars of a larger cross-sectional diameter at the corners of the fence.
  3. We give the structure the correct shape with the help of twine, which passes through all corners.

How deep the post needs to be buried depends on the condition of the soil: if it is a dry and loose trench, it goes underground at a distance of 1-1.2 meters, if it is wet, it requires additional meters.

Pole mounting options

Backfilling pillars - how to do it right

With the help of a drill, we make recesses in the places where the pegs are fixed. To drain groundwater, you need a substrate of crushed stone and sand.
Installing pillars by backfilling requires the following steps:

  1. We mount a support in each hole, strengthening with wedges of wood.
  2. The level measures the deviation from the vertical line.
  3. We make a wrap. We fall asleep in layers of crushed stone, each time moistening and carefully tamping the building material. Make sure that the dug-in post is in a perpendicular position.
  4. The last layer is made of sand.
  5. Gradually fill the trenches with concrete mortar, making small holes to avoid relief and swelling of the surface.
  6. To protect the frame from seasonal phenomena, we use metal plugs in the upper part of the supports.

It is necessary to install structures without pouring concrete if light building material is used for future fencing, which does not exert a large load on the supporting parts.

Driving method - step by step implementation

It is required to hammer pillars of metal piles. Iron, of course, is easier to bury, but clogging is a more reliable option. We do the event like this:

  1. We drill several trenches in the ground, smaller than the diameter of the support.
  2. We control the immersion depth of the drill, diverting about 60% of the pipe to it.
  3. We measure the perpendicularity of the rod.
  4. Climbing up the ladder, we hammer the post with a sledgehammer.

To simplify the work, you can rent a mobile device for driving iron piles, which operates on the principle of a compressor.

The subtleties of installing poles for different materials

For a support made of a specific material, a specific butting algorithm is provided. Mistakes in dismantling the base can lead to deformation of the entire fence.

Installation of wooden fence posts

Natural building material is easy to process. Minus wood - low resistance to insects and atmospheric phenomena. Lumber structures are not durable, therefore they are justified for a frame made of light load-bearing elements.
Installation of wooden beams does not require much effort:

  1. For a pole 2 meters high, we make a trench. We deepen it into the soil by 0.5 m, taking into account that the part to be buried should be 1/3 of the entire length of the log.
  2. The diameter of the recess is the section of the column multiplied by two.
  3. We cover the bottom of the pit with gravel. In case of leakage of groundwater, it is advisable to use expanded clay.
  4. Level adjust the vertical position of the support, and fall asleep with rubble.

Metal sleeves, which serve as the basis for mounting the lumber support, will help to give stability to the pillars.

Installation of metal poles

The metal support does not deform under the weight of a heavy structure. Its arrangement has several nuances:

  • it is necessary to bury the pillars to a depth of at least 1.5 meters, and during installation, use concreting and driving into the soil.
  • before installation, the metal bases are coated with a primer to prevent corrosion.
  • concreting is carried out on level ground with high water permeability.
  • for tight fixation to the ground, the post must be placed in a trench of a smaller section than the base of the support.
  • the rod is hammered with a sledgehammer.

To prevent the accumulation of groundwater in the body of the pipe, metal caps or covers are used.
You can design a reliable fence with your own hands. To achieve the strength of the fence canvas, take care to install reliable posts for the country fence without the use of concreting.

Frame elements must not only be selected correctly, but also correctly installed

One of the key questions that determine the success of the construction of the fence is how to install fence posts from corrugated board as efficiently as possible? In our article, we will try not only to describe the technology in detail, but also to give recommendations on the choice of frame elements for such a fence.

The supporting structure for the fence

One of the advantages of corrugated fences is that such fences can be made by hand. Their construction technology is quite simple, and therefore, having studied the recommendations and watched the video, almost any master can cope with the construction of a small fence.

Structural details

The basis of such a fence is a special load-bearing structure. It includes the following details:

  • Main supporting elements. They are installed in the corners of the fenced area, as well as on the sides of the gate. As a rule, a corner or gate support post for a corrugated fence is thicker, as it experiences an increased load.
  • Intermediate support elements. In order to save money, they are made thinner, as they are less prone to deformation.
  • Braces. Sometimes they are used to level supports, especially if the characteristics of the soil do not allow concreting with due efficiency.
  • Horizontal joists. They are made either from wooden beams, or from a profile pipe with a section of 30x30 or 20x40 mm.

All elements of the supporting structure are rigidly interconnected. In the vast majority of cases, welding is used for this, however, it is possible to mount the frame using mechanical connectors.

The modern building materials market offers us supports of various types. Below we will tell you which posts are needed for a corrugated fence.

Metal supports

The most common type of supports for profiled steel sheet fences are metal products:

  • As a rule, the support is made from a piece of thick-walled round or (better) profiled pipe. The thickness of the metal must be not less than 2 mm, and for high fences - up to 3 mm.

Profile pipe 80x80 or 100x100 mm - one of the best options

Note! Despite the fact that the price of round and profiled pipes is approximately the same, the latter are distinguished by greater mechanical strength. And the frame of rectangular parts looks more neat.

  • The length of the part depends on the height of the fence. As a rule, the underground part of the support is made one and a half meters. However, in dense soils, sometimes a depth of 1 meter is enough.
  • In order to avoid corrosion, the metal is subjected to special treatment. The upper part of the frame needs to be updated over time, treated with paint for metal for outdoor use.

wooden supports

In situations where savings come to the fore (for example, we make a temporary fence), wooden poles can be used instead of metal pipes:

  • Wooden supports are inferior to metal ones in strength, so it is worth using bars with a large cross section.
  • The best wood species for the manufacture of frame elements are conifers - spruce, pine, sometimes cedar. The wood must be even, without large knots, delaminations, cracks, etc.
  • Before installation, the supports must be treated with an antiseptic. The lower part, which will be in the ground, is lubricated with water-repellent mastic.

Installation of a wooden beam

concrete pillars

An alternative to wood or metal is the use of factory-made concrete structures:

Decorative concrete supports

  • The composition of such a pillar includes cement, building gravel and sifted sand.
  • As a rule, the column itself is divided into two sections. The lower one, which is introduced into the ground, has a monolithic structure, and is made 0.8 - 1.2 m long.
  • The upper part is made either with special grooves or with metal mortgages for attaching the log.

The fence made of corrugated board with concrete pillars has good mechanical characteristics. In addition, due to the rigidity of the concrete supporting structure, the deformation of the skin under the influence of windage is reduced.

In some cases, the supporting structure is also made of brick, or a combination of "round pipe + brickwork". This option is acceptable both in terms of mechanical properties and in appearance, but the construction of a corrugated fence on brick pillars requires serious labor.

Fence on a brick frame

The order of installation of supports

When suitable supports are selected, it is necessary to proceed with their installation. And here the simplest, and at the same time, reliable design is a fence made of corrugated board with concrete pillars.

Note! In some cases, it is allowed to install the foundation for a hedge without concreting, but the reliability of such a system is very doubtful. Therefore, it is worth saving on concrete only in the case of installing a temporary fence.

Here is an instruction describing the main stages of installing the frame:

  • We start by marking the area. On the ground, with measuring cords, we “beat off” the perimeter that needs to be protected, and proceed to making marks for the installation of poles.
  • The optimal distance between corrugated fence posts is 3 meters. This is due to the fact that the profile pipe used for mounting horizontal logs has a length of 6 m, and when designing three-meter spans, it is easiest to join the logs.

Vertical alignment

  • At certain points, using a special manual or electric drill (pictured), we make holes. The socket diameter must be at least 100 mm larger than the support diameter.

Advice! When installing a fence of fairly thin pipes, you can use an auger fishing ice screw. But you will have to say goodbye to sharpening knives - keep in mind!

Drill use

  • Pour gravel into the drilled hole. We compact the gravel pillow with a pole with a flat nozzle.
  • We install the support and align it in level and plumb.

Everything is ready to pour the solution!

  • We fill the hole with gravel to about the middle of the column, and then we fill in the cement mortar.
  • We fix the post with the help of boards or special braces. After the solution has completely solidified, we remove the fixation and proceed to welding the log.

Proper installation of corrugated fence posts is an indispensable condition that ensures the strength and durability of the entire structure. So at this stage you should not rush, because it is better to spend a little more time now than to redo the entire fence in a few years (read other articles on the topic “How to make a fence from a profiled sheet?”).

The construction of a fence or fencing of a summer cottage is considered one of the first tasks that should be solved by a summer resident who is arranging his site.

In addition, the construction of a practical fence made of corrugated board allows you to hide the territory from an unnecessary look.

The advantages of a fence from a profiled sheet

The fence made of corrugated board is characterized the following benefits:

  • Fast fence installation: determination of the necessary line along the perimeter, installation of poles, cross posts, fastening of corrugated board. Such a fence allows the owners to feel comfortable. The fence made of corrugated board will reliably protect against strangers, as it is very strong.
  • Profiled fence can be built high enough. The height of the fence can reach 3-5 meters. Thanks to this, it is possible to muffle the sounds coming from the outside, to create a kind of sound-reflecting screen for the sounds emitted in the yard.
  • Build a fence from a profiled sheet you can do it yourself without the involvement of specialists. There is no need to spend additional cash costs on renting special equipment, unlike the construction of a concrete fence.
  • Large variety of colors. You can choose the color to your liking and build a very neat beautiful fence.
  • Long service life. A fence made of galvanized corrugated board will last about 20 years. And if the profiled sheet is also coated with polymers, then it can last much longer.

How to choose a professional sheet

When choosing a profiled sheet, the following factors should be taken into account:

  1. Material color scheme. The color of the fence can be chosen in such a way that it goes well with the decoration of the house and enlivens the landscape. A fence made of corrugated board is not a faceless and dull structure. Even in the most ordinary version, such a structure is pleasing to the eye.
  2. Profiled sheet price. When buying this material, it is necessary to take into account its cost. In this case, saving is not recommended. The low cost only speaks of the poor quality of the material, the polymer layer, galvanization, and very thin metal, which will become unsuitable for the fence.

You can watch a video on how to make a gate from corrugated board with your own hands, you can here.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a fence made of corrugated board under a tree, you can read in this article.

Materials and tools

For the construction of a fence from a profiled sheet, the following tools and materials are required:

  • corrugated board, pipes for supporting pillars for logs;
  • cement, crushed stone, sand;
  • welding machine;
  • capacity for cement mortar;
  • drill, drill;
  • primer, rope and level;
  • riveter, metal screws.

What poles are usually used for a corrugated fence

The following types of columns are widely used:

  • metal;
  • wooden;
  • profile;
  • reinforced concrete;
  • brick.

Based on practice, metal or profile pipes are most often used to achieve the strength of the fence structure. Firstly, they have an affordable price, and secondly, they do not need additional processing before driving into the ground.

Poles of this type for a corrugated fence must be purchased in the following sizes: with thick walls (metal thickness from 2 mm) and a larger diameter.

The length of the posts is determined depending on the height of the fence. It is selected individually. In this case, it is best to purchase a pipe longer than the selected height by 1 m. The upper cut of the supports is welded or a plug is installed - this way moisture can be prevented from getting inside the metal racks.

Step-by-step instructions for erecting a fence from a profiled sheet

Fence marking

At this stage, precise markup is made, during which:

  • The installation locations of the extreme and corner posts are determined.
  • Places for installing poles for gates and gates are determined.
  • Support poles are installed, and a rope is pulled between them (thus, you can quickly and accurately determine the installation locations of the remaining support poles).
  • The optimal distance between the posts is 2.5 m. The rope is fixed at the set level.

How to put up fence posts

Poles can be installed in the following ways:

  • hammering method;
  • concreting method;
  • construction of a concrete base;
  • installation of pillars - screw piles

Driving method

Pillar driving is characterized as the easiest and cheapest way installation of supporting metal structures.

The driving method involves pre-drilling a hole in the ground, the depth of which is 1 m. Then it will become much easier to install the post, and also help to reduce the deformation of the upper part of the post at the time of driving.

Concreting method

The installation of fence supports by the concreting method is very often used for the installation of both a fence made of corrugated board and wood on stable, non-moisture-saturated soils. In such cases, the answer to the question - “do I need to concrete fence posts?” - is an unequivocal "yes".

The concreting method consists in drilling a hole with a diameter of 150-200 mm for each support. It is advisable to fill the bottom of the pit with crushed stone, then dig holes for the pillars. The depth of the pit is 1-1.5 m, the width is 150 mm. You can use a hand drill for this. The depth of the underground part of the supports is determined depending on the height of the fence. The higher you want to get the fence, the deeper the supports should be dug in. A post is installed in this hole, and the remaining space is filled with cement mortar.

At what distance are the poles placed in this case? Similarly, the supports should be installed equidistant from each other (along the line of the rope) at a distance of 2.5 m.

Support poles must be installed strictly vertically. For these purposes, when installing them, it is necessary to use a plumb line. For the purpose of good fastening of the supports, they must be strengthened: metal rods are welded on both sides and buried in the ground. Supports filled with mortar must be left for 3 days for the solution to completely solidify.

Construction of a concrete base

The installation of the fence depends on the type of soil. If the soil is soft, then some of its areas, especially in the spring, may sag. The same applies to poles installed in such soil. With soft ground, it is necessary to erect strip or column foundation.

The strip foundation looks like a continuous reinforced concrete strip, the depth of which is 500-800 mm, the width is 100 mm more than the width of the fence.

For the construction of a strip foundation, it is necessary:

  1. Make a ribbon box. Its height is 20 cm.
  2. Fasten the boards with bars or wire, then it will be durable.
  3. Lay a layer of waterproofing along the walls of the structure.
  4. Fill with concrete.

The strip foundation gives stability and strength to the fence, even if the soil near the supports is eroded.

Installation of pillars - screw piles

When using piles, the process of building a structure can be much cheaper. The cost of a screw base is significantly lower than the cost of a traditional columnar or strip foundation.

Installation of piles is easily carried out manually or with the help of small-scale mechanization. They are like screws screwed into the ground, thereby compacting the interblade space. As a result, a reliable space is formed for heavy building structures.

Installation lag

Now you can proceed to the installation of the log: the installation of a steel transverse profile is carried out to attach a profiled sheet to it. For logs, it is allowed to use a profiled pipe with a section of 40/25 mm.

The number of lags in each section is determined depending on the height of the fence. If the height is 1.7 m, then 2 logs are quite enough, with a height of 1.7 -2 m and above, installation of 3 logs is required.

The installation of the upper and lower logs is carried out at a distance of 4 cm from the edge of the earth and from the top. In order to protect the log and pillars from rust after installation, they must be coated with a special primer. It is advisable to do this at this stage, because after installing the sheets, it will be extremely inconvenient to work with a primer.

Installation of corrugated board on logs

For fixing corrugated board, self-tapping screws for metal are used (length 35 mm, pitch 500 mm). Docking of profiled sheets with each other must be carried out with an overlap.

When installing a corrugated fence, work gloves must be used. After all, corrugated board is a very sharp material, there is a risk of injury.

Fence support cladding

  • The installed poles do not look very aesthetically pleasing, therefore, as a cladding option, you can use stone or brick. Then the fence will look beautiful and expensive.
  • Supports can be lined with natural or artificial stone. Such a fence has a more impressive appearance and is much stronger. However, such a cladding will require considerable cash costs.
  • Decking is in perfect harmony with other materials, for example, with forging. In this version of the fence, the corrugated board covers the top of the fence. Therefore, you can close only the lower part or use sheets with a gap between them. The result is an original and attractive fence.

When installing a corrugated fence, you cannot avoid scratches on the sheets. This problem can be easily dealt with by using spray paint. Therefore, in advance, buy several cans of paint of the desired color.

A profiled sheet fence looks great, is characterized by durability and practicality, the material perfectly resists sudden changes in temperature, difficult weather conditions, extreme cold and heat. Outside, the fence looks like a solid wall, without seams, firmly and reliably hiding the yard from prying eyes. Therefore, you should not treat such a solution as a temporary one. This design will delight you with its wonderful view for a long time.

The video clearly shows the process of installing supports for a fence from a profloor:

An integral part of any country house are corrugated fences with brick pillars. The fence not only plays the role of a protector from uninvited guests and curious neighbors. It is also one of the most important parts of the architectural composition of your site.

It is the barriers, due to their beauty, sophistication and originality, that are the face of any suburban area. They are designed to maintain its attractive aesthetic appearance. When installing any type of fence with your own hands, special attention is always paid to such an integral element as support posts. Properly made corrugated fence posts can increase the overall strength of the structure, as well as complement its design style.

Materials for arranging pillars

When choosing a material for arranging poles, it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that they will have to withstand the load that is created by the fence section, mechanical shocks or wind loads.

In the construction of fences with their own hands on suburban land plots, in most cases, metal, wooden, concrete or brick pillars are used. The distance between the posts depends on the material.

The most versatile in use are metal poles, because they can be used to build fences from a metal grid or mesh, wooden picket fence, corrugated board or plastic. Metal structures are made using hollow pipes. They are strong, durable and resistant. The cost of quality wood is quite high. However, it is worth noting that even the highest quality wood species cannot boast of special durability in open areas.

For comparison, we note that metal poles can last at least fifty years, while wooden poles can stand for no more than two or three decades. For this reason, in most cases they are used for arranging low-height fences, front gardens or temporary fences with their own hands. We also note that wooden fences are the simplest option for fencing, but at the same time not cheap. Pillars made of wood will always be considered prestigious.

It makes sense to construct pillars made of concrete or brick only when equipping heavy fences. However, in some cases, brick pillars are used as decorative elements.

In this case, they play the role of a certain visiting card of a particular house. Concrete pillars are distinguished by their relative cheapness and manufacturability. They are also extremely durable and will last for many decades.

Pillars made of bricks are the most expensive option for arranging fences. In most cases, corrugated fences with brick pillars are considered only as decoration in wealthy household plots. The owners of such houses are unlikely to independently calculate the distance between the pillars, or do something with their own hands.

Fence layout

So, you have made the decision to build fences from corrugated board with brick pillars around the house with your own hands. The first step is to mark on the site its location. It is also necessary to carefully calculate the number of required support pillars.

With proper calculation, you can avoid warping the structure and its further collapse during use.

In most cases, the distance between the posts is selected in the range of two to three meters. The total number of posts is calculated depending on the length of the entire fence and the size of the finished sections, if any. Depending on the design features of the fence and the characteristics of the soil, it is necessary to choose the method of installing the pillars.

Pillar concreting as a universal installation method

The most universal way to install pillars is their concreting. This method is great for installing wooden, metal or concrete structures. In this case, the soil must be stable and not saturated with moisture. With this method, it is necessary to initially dig a hole under the pillars, in which the supports themselves are placed. The distance between the holes is determined in advance. The remaining space in the pits is simply filled with concrete mortar.

To make the process of digging a hole simple, you can use an ordinary garden drill. Water can also be used to improve drilling efficiency. It must be poured into the hole and wait about 15 minutes. After the implementation of these actions, the earth in the pit will become soft and extremely pliable. If the height of the posts you need to install does not exceed half a meter, then the depth of the hole should also be 0.5 meters. If the height of the support post should be greater, then the hole must be dug with your own hands at least 0.8 meters. It is customary to bury the post in the ground by a third of its length.

If the pillars need to be dug in on non-rocky soils, then you can completely abandon the use of concrete.

You can also use the following advice: use a drill, the diameter of which matches the diameter of the post.

In this case, the near-stem area will not fluff. The pillars will fit snugly into the ground without additional concreting. However, the use of this method requires excellent vertical drilling skills from the master.

What to do if the groundwater is high enough? Under such conditions, it is necessary to deepen the supports significantly below the level of soil freezing, and when using concreting, this exercise will be quite costly. In this case, crushed stone is laid out at the bottom of the pit with a layer of 15 centimeters. Such a pillow is used as a drainage support for the structure, and also dampens part of the frost heaving forces. The rest of the space in the hole must be concreted.

How to drive posts into the ground

This method is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to mount supporting metal structures with your own hands. This method is particularly effective in the construction of fences on little stony soils, which consist of layers of the most dense rocks.

However, it will not work if you decide to build corrugated fences with brick pillars.

For hammering small pillars, you can use an ordinary sledgehammer. If the length of the supports exceeds three meters, then you can use the so-called headstock, which is designed for quick and convenient driving of piles and pipes into the ground.

Structurally, the headstock is a meter-long piece of a metal pipe, one of the ends of which is welded and weighted to a weight of 15-20 kilograms. During the driving of the headstock, the guide structure is located in the pipe, which makes it possible to make the blow extremely accurate, because such a blow must be performed exclusively along the axis of the object.

Using the method of driving pillars with a headstock, complexity can appear when the structure is lifted. To facilitate work, long handles are welded to it, which, as they are clogged, can be rebuilt to the most convenient position. The distance between the handles is determined individually.

Construction of a concrete plinth for a brick fence

Traditionally, corrugated fences with brick pillars are usually erected only on a concrete foundation, tape or column type. The strip foundation is a continuous reinforced concrete strip, which lies at a depth of about 0.8 meters underground. The width of the tape should be ten centimeters greater than the width of the fence.

Since the brick pillars are heavy enough to be installed with high quality by hand, it will be necessary to make a base with a shallow depth. To build such a foundation, it is necessary to dig a trench. It is necessary to drive pipes into the bottom of the trench, which will be used as the basis for future brick pillars.

At the bottom of the trench it is necessary to pour sand, crushed stone or broken brick with a layer of 30 centimeters. All this stand must be carefully tamped. Formwork must be installed along the perimeter of the trench; it is installed in such a way that the concrete solution does not lose moisture. That is, the formwork must be waterproofed. After the formwork is installed, it is necessary to start knitting the frame from the reinforcement with further pouring of the trench with concrete. Concrete can fully cure in about five days. However, a brick fence with corrugated board can be erected with your own hands in a few days.

Installation of screw piles

When using piles, the construction process will be much cheaper. The cost of a screw base is significantly less than the cost of a traditional strip or column foundation.

Screw piles have gained great popularity recently in the manufacture of fences for houses and cottages. The distance between the piles should also be between two and three meters.

A distinctive feature of piles is their ease of installation without the use of additional equipment. You can also install them using small-scale mechanization. They will be screwed into the ground like screws or self-tapping screws. As the depth increases, the space between the blades will be compacted, which will make it possible to make a good foundation even for heavy structures.

It has always been believed that a fence made of corrugated board is a simple structure that any owner of a personal plot can put up. When building a fence, it is very important to choose the right fence posts from corrugated board.

Mounted iron fence posts

The material for the supports of such a fence can be:

  • brick;
  • pipes;
  • wood.

brick supports

Brick fences, as well as fences made of natural stone, the price of which is quite high, are considered to be buildings of the elite category. However, such fences differ in price and quality.

It looks like a fence made of corrugated board with brick pillars

Significantly reduce the cost of poles for a corrugated fence, while maintaining a beautiful appearance and attractiveness, perhaps if you use ordinary facing bricks, most often red.

Such a fence can be made of any size, which, by its appearance, as well as the quality of workmanship, will not yield to natural materials in any way. The price of brick poles for a corrugated fence is always higher than the installation of metal poles. However, a brick has an undoubted advantage over a metal support. Brick pillars decorate any site, they emphasize the good taste and solidity of its owner.

In addition to decorative properties, brick pillars are highly durable, they are not afraid of strong winds, they endure atmospheric influences. Usually, brick pillars, when corrugated board becomes the material of the fence, are built from facing bricks, which perfectly imitate stone.

Scheme with dimensions for mounting brick pillars

The height of such a column reaches a maximum of 2.5 meters. The step between the supports should not exceed three meters. Brick supports are usually built in conjunction with the plinth. To install them

Pillars for corrugated metal pipes

According to practice, in order to make the construction of the fence more durable, both round metal pipes and poles with a profile section of 60x60 mm are used. Their price is quite affordable for every owner of a summer cottage. To install the pipes into the ground, no additional work is required. The size of the walls of such pipes for poles must exceed two millimeters. The cross section of the pipe is selected individually.

The length of the posts depends on the height of the fence. Moreover, the length of the pipe should be one meter longer than the height of the fence.

An example of the height of a fence made of corrugated board and poles

The upper part of the support is welded or a plug is placed on it to prevent moisture from entering the metal supports.

Pillars from asbestos-cement pipes

In some cases, when a reinforced concrete foundation is poured, asbestos-cement pipes are installed. The price of such a support is quite low, so they are often used for fences blocking a summer cottage or a utility yard.

Asbestos-cement pipes have not become very popular, since it is very difficult to attach logs and mortgages to them. This material is distinguished by increased fragility, water constantly accumulates in the pipes. With the onset of cold weather, the water freezes, the pipe begins to crack. A fence made of corrugated board is too heavy for such supports.

wooden poles

Less and less began to install wooden poles when the fence is built from corrugated board. To increase the life of a wooden pole, especially when it is located on the street, its special processing is required. As a result, the price of the pillar increases sharply, and a positive result is not always obtained.

When wood is used for poles, a wooden beam is used for corrugated board, the size of which exceeds 100 x 100 mm.

This makes it possible to achieve a high strength of the support so that it can withstand strong wind loads. The lower part of the post, before being buried in the ground, is treated with bituminous impregnation. As a result, the tree becomes resistant to a variety of, including aggressive, environments:

  • alkalis;
  • acid;
  • water.

To obtain greater reliability, two bituminous layers are made, which are applied one after the other after 24 hours.

Bituminous impregnation of a wooden pole for a corrugated fence

Such a break is necessary for the bituminous impregnation of the first layer to completely harden. Wooden poles must be well dried before installation, their moisture content should not exceed 15%.

Pole installation

Profiled sheeting has always been used by builders to cover the roofs of industrial premises. It was also used to install fences for a variety of construction areas. However, after the appearance of profiled sheets with a multi-colored protective coating, they were increasingly used for fencing private buildings.

Each building should have a finished look, which usually gives it a beautiful fence. The pillars are the backbone of any fence. When the installation of corrugated fence posts is done in accordance with all building rules, it can stand for many decades. Therefore, during the construction of the fence, very important questions remain relevant: what kind of poles are required, what material is needed for their manufacture?

Requirements for modern fences

Strength comes first. Any fence should protect from gusts of wind, from the penetration of intruders and prying eyes. When choosing a fence for do-it-yourself construction, the scales tilt towards external attractiveness. In this case, the fence made of corrugated board will be the most accurate and correct. To make the base of the pillars with your own hands, you can use several types of material.

Wood

Such supports for corrugated board are distinguished by low cost. However, wooden poles are not very durable compared to their counterparts.

Brick

A brick fence always looks attractive and majestic. A fence with brick pillars is characterized by increased strength and can be used for more than a dozen years.

Option of brick pillars for a metal fence

The disadvantages of such a brick fence can be called:

  • High cost;
  • Labor intensity of work;
  • Long construction period.

metal pipes

Usually a round profile is used. Some for the manufacture of pillars choose between steel and asbestos-cement pipes. In any case, the fence turns out to be reliable and affordable for making with your own hands.

Such supports are slightly more expensive than wooden poles, however, their reliability is much higher.

Choice of distance between supports

Installing a fence using corrugated board is quite simple with your own hands. To eliminate errors, it is necessary to adhere to the correct technology of work.

The basis of each fence is made up of logs along with pillars. Their installation is considered the most time-consuming work.

To reduce financial investments in the construction of the fence, it is necessary to maintain the maximum distance between the pillars.

The scheme of the distance between the fence posts

However, a very large distance will complicate installation work with corrugated board. It will be difficult to make a crate, the strength of the entire fence will decrease. The best is the distance between the pillars, equal to 2.5 meters. Of course, this value is subject to change. It all depends on the complexity of the design and technological features of the structure. But in any case, the distance between the pillars should not be more than three meters.

Choice of poles

What supports to choose so that the fence is beautiful, durable, reliable and attractive? This question is asked by everyone who decides to build a fence with their own hands. Today, supports are widely used:

  • wooden;
  • brick;
  • profile;
  • steel;
  • concrete poles.

Technological features of the installation of pillars

In order to install the supports with your own hands, several types of technological operations are used:

Let's consider each of these methods separately.

hammering

This method is considered the most simple and affordable. Its cost is low. It is most suitable for building a fence with your own hands.

A hole is drilled in the ground, the depth of which should not exceed one meter. Thus, the installation of the post is facilitated, the deformation of its top is reduced when it is hammered.

concreting

When the terrain has non-moisture-saturated soil, the support is concreted. Moreover, it is possible to choose between a wooden fence or made of corrugated board.

The scheme of concreting pillars for the fence

For concreting, a hole is pre-drilled, the diameter of which must exceed 150 mm. The number of holes must match the number of posts.

To drill holes for poles with their own hands, use a hand drill. The depth of the underground part of the column depends on what the height of the fence will be. For a high fence, you need to make a deep hole.

The column is installed in a drilled hole, the free space in the pit is filled with concrete. The distance between the posts must be maintained within 2.5 meters.

Installation of support pillars must be carried out strictly vertically. To withstand the geometry, a construction plumb line is used. In order for the supports to be well fixed, steel bars are welded to them on each side, which are dug into the ground.

Installation of screw piles

When piles are used, the cost of building a fence is reduced. A screw base is much cheaper than a strip foundation.

It is very easy to mount piles with your own hands or using special mechanical devices. Piles, like screws, are screwed into the ground, due to which the interblade space is compacted.

lags

A metal transverse profile, or logs, are installed for fastening sheets of corrugated board. Basically, logs are made from a profile pipe, the cross section of which is selected individually.

Fastening of corrugated board

To fix the corrugated board, use special self-tapping screws for metal. Docking sheets overlap. The performance of such work requires compliance with safety regulations.

Options for fastening corrugated board to the frame

The corrugated board has very sharp edges, therefore, in order not to injure your hands, you need to work with gloves.

Foundation

When brick pillars are mounted, the mass of the fence increases dramatically. For the stability of the structure, increasing its durability, it is required to fill the foundation.

First, a marking operation is performed. Pegs are installed at the corners of the site, a cord is pulled between them. According to the markup, a trench is dug, the dimensions of which are dictated by the type of soil. If it is dense, the depth of the foundation may not exceed 40 cm. When the soil is very loose, the depth of the trench is made greater.

To install supports from steel pipes, holes are made that are deeper than a third of the top of the column.

A layer of sand of 15 cm is poured into the harvested wells and compacted tightly. Then pipes are inserted into it. Free space is covered with broken bricks. The verticality of the pipe installation is checked by the building level, then the entire structure is poured with cement.

Pouring the foundation for a fence made of corrugated board

The bottom of the trench should have a gravel cushion on which the reinforcing cage is laid. For pouring the solution, formwork is made. Filling is carried out in layers, and careful tamping is required between each layer.

Application of steel pipes

This option for installing poles is considered the most economical. The design of the fence is very strong, it is highly reliable. The service life of such a fence is calculated in tens of years.
To install steel pipes, it is required to follow the developed technology:

Two weeks later, after the concrete has completely set, it will be possible to install fence sections, weld mortgages,

install gates and gates

This whole story clearly demonstrates how to bury money in the ground. Obviously strangers. But if there is no mind, that is, professional qualifications are no longer foreseen, then money is buried in the ground. Fencing turns into entertainment in itself. The fence takes a whole season to install and economically resembles a skyscraper. The main items of exorbitant expenses: 1) drilling (very expensive equipment, site preparation, water fighting); 2) production of concrete (expensive equipment, the need for indoor storage of cement, water, the need for sifted sand, high-quality crushed stone of a certain fraction, manually carrying large and heavy volumes of the mixture, the need for electricity); 3) payment for unproductive labor and time of workers (sawing cutouts with a grinder, welding some kind of "gadgets" for which you need a device, you need a welder, sawing polypropylene pipes. And buy them, bring them.
Pouring concrete manually into a pipe through a funnel and without a vibrator is a medical enema in terms of sensations. It seems to be useful, but here it is stupid and inappropriate. Long, again poor quality. It seems to be easier to put a plastic cap on top of the pipe for 9 rubles and forget about this concrete through a funnel, like a nightmare.
The processes are offered hidden, they require vigilant control, otherwise the hidden works will turn into hidden imperfections. The problematic place is the filling with concrete of the required volumes in the ground. Two throws with a shovel and it seems "like concreted." In fact, it is impossible to drive concrete a meter deep and make sure that everything is fine with it without a vibrator and the appearance of a characteristic foam on the concrete surface. Therefore, bored foundations are made with a diameter of at least 300 mm. 200x200mm reinforcement cage, and there is room for a submersible vibrator.
Worst of all in the "megafence" project with time and its useless use. In short, the adviser moved on something, went crazy and went to praise himself and the “technology”.
In fact, everything happens differently. The first day they dig holes under the poles with a shovel. The second day they put an empty barrel or a tragus, they drive pipes from them into the ground. At first, one worker slightly holds the pole and looks at the plumb line, the second slave drives the pipe into the ground with a sledgehammer, standing on a barrel or goats. They change in sequence. The third day - the top of the pit of each pillar is covered with small gravel with a simple shovel or stones, broken bricks, crushed with a foot and a collar is made from mortar. Ready mixes M300 in bags, water, a shovel are used. For a snack - the flattened upper ends of the pipes are cut off from above with a grinder along a cord. Everything. Pull the crossbar welding under the profiled sheet or galvanized wire (cable) under the chain-link and for centuries.
The author forgot that rust turns into magnetite, the original ore for iron smelting, pipes in the ground stop rotting. Frost heaving is greatly exaggerated. The pipe itself is slippery. The fence should be dealt with in April, while the earth is soft, loose, just the soil is already swollen after winter. This means: the pillar is set at the peak of all the negative processes of frost heaving that occurred without it. The soil will then self-compact, hold the posts very tight, and re-heaving will just put the post in the best possible condition since it was installed at the right time.
If "perfectionism" is very pressing, please paint the pipes with primer-enamel not after installation, but before installation. And not in one go, but in two, in a thin layer, as the instructions say. Well, you can still sharpen the ends of the pipes so that they drive in better. In the fall, in short, we need to prepare everything. And all these “miracle technologies” come from the fundamental impossibility for an amateur to connect cause and effect in his head. When money is tight on the thigh to make such fences, this is not a sign of genius.

If you decide to build a fence with your own hands, then for sure the underlying reason for self-construction is the task of saving money or, at least, not overpaying for building a fence. Today, you can easily find a lot of tips on the net on how to build a fence yourself, among them there are many useful, but also quite a lot of strange and harmful tips (about them at the very end of the article). In fact, building a fence on your own is not a technically difficult task, it is rather physically difficult. As the saying goes: “Not Gods burn pots!” Regardless of what you are going to build a fence from, the installation of pillars will be the basis of this construction. The choice of fence posts will determine its strength and cost, and the correct installation of the posts will determine the durability and neat appearance of the fence.

In this article, we want to talk about a few basic points that underlie how to build a fence with your own hands and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

If you choose fence posts in terms of price-quality ratio, then metal fence posts will be the best choice. They are inexpensive, light, strong and durable (provided they were primed and painted first). On top of that, it is the metal fence posts that are the most versatile, which can serve as the basis for almost any fence. For example, later, as a fence canvas, you can use a metal profile sheet or boards. As for the fence posts themselves, they can be overlaid with bricks (provided that the base of the post is concreted).

Now a few tips on what you should pay attention to before buying iron fence posts.

  • First, don't buy painted fence posts (not to be confused with primed ones). The fact is that during transportation and installation they will still be scratched, so it’s better to buy poles covered with a primer layer, and you should paint them only when they are already installed on the site and logs are attached to them, but even before the installation of a profiled sheet or boards.
  • Secondly, if you are going to attach some decorative tops to the fence posts, it is better to purchase them separately from the posts so that you can mount these tops on the posts after installing these posts. The fact is that when installing fence posts, a situation often arises when soil crumbles from its walls into a newly dug hole and in order to set the post to the desired depth, you have to literally hammer it into the ground. To this end, the upper end of the pole has to be hit with a sledgehammer like a nail head, while in order not to damage the pole, blows are applied to it through a wooden gasket. In such cases, the installed decorative finial on the pole will complicate and delay the installation time, as it will not allow hammering the pole by striking its upper end without damaging the finial already installed on the pole.
  • Thirdly, before buying iron fence posts and logs for them, make sure that the geometry of all elements is correct, all dimensions are the same (the strips on the posts are welded at the same height, have the same width, all holes are drilled at the same distance from the edge, etc.). Remember that if you buy sloppy posts and logs that have even slight differences in length, distance between the cross bars of the posts, distance between the edges and mounting holes, then your fence is guaranteed to be crooked. Why crooked? Because if two pillars connected by two lags do not form a rectangle due to the inaccuracy of the dimensions of all elements, then the fence cannot be even.
  • Fourth, make sure that the welds are securely welded, with a continuous weld, and not "tacked on a few points."

What is the length of the fence posts?

Remember that the higher and denser the fence is, the higher its windage (the property of an object to perceive the kinetic energy of the wind). The fence, which uses a metal profile sheet, has the highest windage. During a strong wind, the poles will experience heavy loads, and in order for such a fence not to be knocked down by the wind, it is necessary that the poles be buried at least 30% of their length. The second moment influencing the choice of poles for a fence of one length or another is the height of the fence you plan. If you plan to use a metal profile sheet 2 meters high, then the length of the pole must be at least 3 meters, while it is buried in the ground not by 1 meter, but by 1.2-1.3 meters (the upper edge of the pole does not have to be on one level with the top edge of the fence).

Installation of fence posts

Do fence posts need to be concreted or can they just be buried? It can be done either way - at your discretion. Pole base concreting is desirable in cases where you are building a fence with high windage and / or you do not have the opportunity to dig the bottom edge of the posts to a sufficient depth.

If you decide to build a low fence with your own hands, then you do not have to concrete the bases of the pillars. It will be enough to dig holes with dimensions exceeding the section of the column and having a depth exceeding the depth of the buried part of the column. Sand is poured into the bottom of the pit, then gravel, all this is carefully rammed. By pouring gravel, you can adjust the height of the post. Further, the column is set exactly along the fence line, observing the strict verticality of the column. The line and height of the fence is usually set by installing the outermost posts and pulling a cord between them. The verticality of the installation of the column is checked by applying a level to it alternately in two mutually perpendicular planes. If you do it yourself, for the first time and without assistants, then it may be more convenient for you to use 2 levels at the same time, attaching them to the pole to be installed using masking tape.

The pit around the post is covered with sand and gravel, having a fraction of no more than 20-40. All this is rammed in layers.

How to concrete fence posts

In general, the rules for concreting fence posts are no different from the rules for concreting buried foundations.

  • According to the rules, it is necessary to concrete to a depth exceeding the freezing depth;
  • If you are pouring a “tape”, then it must be reinforced in the same way as strip foundations are reinforced;
  • Do not allow the shape of the concrete part to expand towards the top, otherwise someday this will cause the post to be pushed out of the ground due to frost heaving;
  • It is desirable to organize a drainage that diverts water

Remember that in cases of frost heaving, the water contained in the soil, when frozen, expands. The ground begins to expand. Theoretically, such an expansion should occur evenly in all directions, but in fact it goes up. This expansion follows the path of least resistance, so to speak, since the least pressure (only atmospheric) acts on the ground from above. Expanding upwards, the soil tries to carry with it everything with which it comes into contact. Draw conclusions from here. So that by spring the fence posts are not partially squeezed out of the ground, you can do the following:

  • to minimize the frost heaving of the soil itself by maximizing the removal of water from the soil due to the organization of drainage;
  • reduce the friction force between the soil and the body of the column (or the foundation of the column) by organizing a layer of crushed stone;
  • do not create thickenings in the upper part of the pillar foundation and on the pillar itself in the transition zone from the ground to the air;
  • create extrusion resistance by creating an expansion at the very bottom of the foundation;

If you decide to make fence posts with your own hands

In this case, buy a pipe with a length that is a multiple of the length of the end posts. This will allow you to cut it without waste, which will save you money.

Remember that pipes for fence posts have not only parameters such as length and section, but also such an important parameter as wall thickness. Wall thickness will largely determine the durability of your fence. After all, metal, in any case, is subject to corrosion and the thicker it is, the longer it will last. However, it must be remembered that it strongly depends on the wall thickness.

Be sure to cover the top end of the finished fence posts to prevent rainwater from entering the column. If the pillars are filled with rainwater, they will rust from the inside, and if the water freezes inside the pillar, the pillar may break. You can close the upper end either by welding a steel plate on top, or by plugging the post with a special plastic plug.

The poles must be painted, but before painting it is advisable to cover the pole with a primer. If there is such an opportunity, then it is possible to cover with a primer the inside of the post (at least its lower part). This can be done by partially immersing the column in a container with a primer. To do this, you can make a narrow container in the form of a sleeve made from a pipe with a slightly larger cross section than the cross section of your fence posts. This sleeve must be plugged from below and you will get a narrow container into which you can pour the primer and dip the bottom of the posts.

If you suffer from gigantomania, then you can additionally cover the lower part of the column with a bitumen-polymer primer.

Everything described above applies exclusively to metal fence posts.

Some "opuses" generally look anecdotal. Below are two screenshots from the whole set of such "jokes". Zoom in and read the highlighted text
