Design projects for decorating kitchens, shown in the photo, are often unviable in the conditions of Khrushchev and 6 sq. m. The space is so small that first of all thoughts are about practicality, and not about the beauty of the room. However, a tiny area is not a death sentence - and in the conditions of an ordinary small-sized apartment you can create a beautiful and cozy kitchen.

Ways to expand space

It has long been known that color can influence visual perception. Designers make full use of numerous visual illusions. By choosing the right colors and patterns of finishing materials, you can try to visually expand the space.

A bright interior of a small kitchen is always a win-win option

What can be done in a kitchen with an area of 6 sq. m in a Khrushchev building:

Important! Monochrome is better than variegation - use patterns in minimal quantities. Try to place no more than 2 active color accents in the kitchen.

Arrangement of the workspace

When thinking about the arrangement of a sink, stove and refrigerator for 6 square meters in a Khrushchev-era building, it is important to pay special attention to the layout of the kitchen.

Placing a sink near a window in a U-shaped kitchen

There are several options for conveniently designing a work area in a small room:

Corner sink

If you decide to place the sink in the corner, it is better to place the refrigerator closer to the window. A small cabinet - about 30 cm wide - can fit between the refrigerator and the stove. If you unfold the sink along a non-working wall, it will turn out very convenient. If desired, you can place a dishwasher next to the sink instead of drawers in one of the cabinets closest to the stove.

Sink by the window

From an aesthetic point of view, this is the best option if there is really something to admire outside the window. Is it difficult to implement this option? For this purpose, you will have to lengthen the pipes, both water and sewer. It can be difficult to carry out such an operation on your own; you will have to hire specialists. Where the sink used to be, you can put a refrigerator, which is also convenient. The format of such a kitchen is corner, and from the point of view of layout, the most spacious.

Sink next to the work wall away from the corner

An alternative is to move the sink along the wall so that a refrigerator or refrigerator can be placed in the free space. This type of kitchen is called direct; in this case, the number of cabinets and cabinets is reduced to the required minimum. This is the most economical option for kitchen design with a 6-square refrigerator; examples of such arrangement of furniture and appliances can be seen in the photo.

The location of the sink in the central location of the work area

Arrangement along a long wall - 3 meters

The size plan of a 6 sq. m kitchen in a Khrushchev building is usually 2x3 meters. As you can see, the room is very narrow, so the best option for placing the headset is along one of the long walls. In this case, there are also not too many closets; this option is suitable for small families and singles. You can try to plan a corner version of the kitchen in such conditions, but it all depends on the height and width of the window sill, as well as on the location of the gas and water pipes.

Linear arrangement of kitchen units with open shelves

Refrigerator by the door

By placing the device at the entrance, you will get a fairly comfortable workspace in a small kitchen. In this case, the cooking process becomes as convenient as possible: we take the necessary products, wash, cut and cook on the stove. Everything you need is located in the right sequence.

Refrigerator niche at the kitchen door

Important! If the refrigerator is located near the door, psychological discomfort may occur due to the obstructed view of the kitchen. Examples of kitchen design for 6 square meters in Khrushchev with different options for arranging the refrigerator relative to the stove and sink can be seen in the photo.

Style decision

When planning the design of a 6 sq. m kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, you can competently fit in almost any style, while costing relatively little. Here are some options for decorating a small space:

Minimalism

This trend in interior design is supposedly intended for decorating small spaces. To decorate the floors and walls, use natural light shades - beige, white, gray, etc.

A kitchen set with a minimum of decor; if you want something interesting, pay attention to the facades with a relief surface or imitation of untreated wood. Use more open shelves. Modest and compact roller blinds are hung on windows - they take up little space and are easy to clean. When decorating the interior, use either shades of the same color or 2 basic tones, no more;

East style

It is not characterized by gloss, so all surfaces should be matte. Use beige, blue or golden colors for decoration. To add the flavor of a particular oriental country to the interior, use curtains or a tablecloth with a characteristic pattern. On the wall you can hang a picture with traditional Chinese or Japanese paintings or an animal print if the kitchen is in an African style;

Baroque and Rococo

A distinctive feature of these styles is the abundance of decor. To prevent the interior from being overloaded, use subtle but fairly detailed patterns on the wallpaper or upholstery of furniture in the style of the 17th-18th centuries.

Here is an example photo with the design of kitchens of 6 sq m in Khrushchev, decorated in different styles. Every detail must be thought out and fit organically into the interior.

Important! Before repairing, make several sketches and choose the most suitable one.

To create a sketch you do not need to have artistic skills - it is enough to schematically depict the plan of the future kitchen. What a good sketch should consider:

  • furnishings;
  • primary colors and accents;
  • shape of the table, number of chairs;
  • window opening design.

All this will allow you to create a fairly detailed plan - all you have to do is find the time and funds.

Compact corner kitchen in Khrushchev

Surely, before the renovation, you looked at more than a dozen photos on the Internet with various interior design options that are difficult to implement in a 6 sq. m kitchen in an ordinary Khrushchev-era apartment building. Most design projects involve a spacious room with high ceilings; in such conditions you can truly create fantastic interiors.

Light kitchen set for a 6 sq. m kitchen in Khrushchev

Is it possible to somehow make dreams come true, given the modest size of the kitchen? In fact, almost any design can be adapted to a small space. Here are some useful tips:

  • When choosing the direction of interior design, reproduce the style, do not focus on details. For example, you really like the Provence style. In a small area it will not be possible to place a lot of soft pillows or put a bunch of cute things on the shelves, however, the spirit of this style can be easily introduced with the help of an ordinary bouquet with lavender;

  • As already mentioned - avoid getting bogged down in details, focus on the overall impression of the room. Using the example of Provence, these are natural materials, soft pastel colors, slight carelessness in decoration;

  • Small kitchens, like other small spaces, do not tolerate mistakes. When decorating a space, make accents correctly. This could be a painting in a light wooden frame with a pastoral theme or a pattern on the curtains. Photo wallpapers with landscapes and large soft sofas are definitely not an option. Catch the characteristic features of the chosen style and use them;

  • To choose the right style, start by studying the main features of several styles. Having chosen one of them, proceed to the selection of primary colors and additional ones that will act as an accent.

In a 6 sq. m kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building there is not much room to roam in terms of design, and the small size introduces a number of limitations.

Combination of different colors in the interior of a small kitchen

What cannot be used in a small room:

  • bright shades as background decoration;
  • dark colors on the walls and floor;
  • massive set;
  • curtains from ceiling to floor;
  • curtains, complex draperies, thick fabrics;
  • glossy facades;
  • colored ceiling;
  • vertical stripes on wallpaper.

Use of kitchen space in a 6 sq.m kitchen

As you can see, 6 square meters in a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era apartment building is not a death sentence; even in such a small area you can create a truly beautiful and thoughtful interior. Take into account the rules of color design for small spaces, use a minimum of decor and organize the work area as conveniently as possible - then your kitchen will not only be comfortable, but also stylish.

All apartments in Khrushchev buildings of any type and year of construction are very small in size. The area of kitchens in such houses is within 5-6-7 square meters. m. When renovating a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, the main leitmotif is to rationally use every available centimeter. And make sure that the interior is comfortable and beautiful. To fulfill this condition, you need to choose the right color palette and furniture.

Choosing colors and finishing materials

In small rooms, it is best to use light colors for wall decoration. They visually increase the volume, while the atmosphere feels “light”. There are several finishing options for walls in the kitchen:

The ceiling should also be made white or light, and better yet -. By reflecting light, it allows you to blur the boundaries between walls and ceiling. Two other popular options - just a flat putty ceiling or a suspended ceiling - are calmer, but no worse. And if you do it, it also adds volume to the room.

Light furniture and a white ceiling do not give the feeling of being “busy” in a small space

You can also use a light color for finishing the floor. It does not “load” the space, which is far from unnecessary in a small kitchen in a Khrushchev-era apartment building. After all, you need to place as much furniture as possible in a small area.

What should the furniture be like?

The kitchen set in Khrushchev houses is made linear - along one wall or angular - by placing cabinets along two adjacent walls. At the same time, so that the furniture does not seem bulky, it can be made using light colors. A good modern option is two-color facades: the doors of the floor cabinets are darker and the doors of the lower ones are lighter.

Light-colored facades work well in kitchens with an area of up to 6-7 sq.m.

Glass doors look good in small spaces. They can be framed with a metal frame or without it at all, the result is the same - a lightweight design. Glass is not used in lower cabinets, it is impractical, but in upper cabinets it looks great - it gives a slight glare, scattering light and attracting attention.

Glass doors are a way to make furniture “lighter”

In general, organizing work surfaces in kitchens in Khrushchev is an art. On one or two small walls you need to place a stove, sink and refrigerator. The working surfaces that remain between them are clearly not enough. For such a case, they came up with multi-level tabletops.

Multi-level countertops - a way to increase the size of your work area

You can also make retractable tabletops. When folded, they are hidden under the main working area, and if necessary they are pulled out. It turns out practical and convenient.

Retractable or folding tabletops are convenient

Often in such a small area you also need to put a dining table with chairs. Since aisles remain quite small, order or find a countertop with rounded corners. The inhabitants of Khrushchev will have fewer bruises. The dining table can also have a folding additional part that slides out from under the main one.

Another option is to buy a glass table. Such furniture looks great even in a tiny kitchen. The glass used is tempered, so if you handle it carefully, nothing will happen. Another design technique that allows you to expand the boundaries of the room and play with light is mirror surfaces. This could be a kitchen apron made of mirrored or metallized tiles, or a real mirror on the wall (pictured below).

Glass table is a great solution

The chairs chosen are lightweight, which when pulled back do not clutter up the space. There are models that fold into one another. They are light and compact.

Tricks that help save space

The biggest problem in a Khrushchev-era kitchen is finding space for a refrigerator. It's good if there is an insulated balcony. This miracle of technology can stand there. And if not, you have to become more sophisticated. If there are few inhabitants, a small refrigerator can be placed on the “second floor” - placed on top of the floor cabinet.

You also need to make full use of the space in your closets. Various storage systems cope best with this. They cost a lot, but they allow you to organize everything and organize the space in the most convenient way.

There may be a problem with the placement of the microwave: there are only so many work surfaces. It can also be raised higher by making a shelf without doors in one of the cabinets - just under the microwave.

If you have wide window sills and you do not plan to use them as work surfaces, you can place kitchen appliances there.

Window sill - why not a place for equipment

To fully utilize the few square meters of the kitchen in Khrushchev, pay attention to the window sill. Even in panel houses with very thin walls, it can be replaced with a tabletop. There are many options here, choose.

A very unusual location of the kitchen unit - on a wall with a window. A sink near the window is another non-standard solution.

When renovating a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, not everyone decides to close the heating radiators, which are usually located under the window. But not everyone today is heated with traditional radiators. There is underfloor heating and baseboard heating. If desired, the radiators can be moved to another wall. Where they won't interfere. So this problem can be solved, albeit at considerable expense.

Light and ventilation

Multi-zone lighting in the kitchen is necessary, especially in a small room. Typically, work surfaces are illuminated by attaching tubular lamps to the bottom of the upper cabinets. It's convenient and functional.

The dining area is separately illuminated. Several small lamps above the table look more organic than a large chandelier. It seems to emphasize the small size of the kitchen.

When renovating a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, don’t forget about ventilation. In order to breathe comfortably in a small space and prevent odors from spreading throughout the entire apartment, good ventilation is necessary. Previously, odors and excessive humidity escaped through cracks in the windows, and steam also escaped through the walls - they were vapor-permeable. Saving energy resources has led to the fact that wooden windows are being replaced with plastic ones, and they are almost completely sealed; the outside walls are insulated with foam plastic, which does not conduct steam at all. Therefore, to ensure normal humidity in the apartment, a good exhaust hood is necessary. It is usually connected to existing ventilation ducts. If the house does not have ventilation ducts, they make a connection into the wall.

Kitchen renovation procedure

Any more or less serious repair begins with destruction. Remove old furniture and remove trim. Modern requirements for the quality of finishing are such that, in theory, it is necessary to knock down the plaster to the main wall, and then level it by plastering along the beacons.

Replacement of communications and engineering systems

But before plastering work begins, all communications and engineering systems must be replaced. At this stage, the electrical wiring is replaced, wires are brought to the places where it is planned to install household appliances, and turn on lamps. Electrical wires are laid in grooves - grooves hollowed out in the wall, which are then covered with plaster mortar.

Wires are laid in them, installed

Be sure to change water and sewer pipes. If, when renovating a kitchen in a Khrushchev-era building, you move the sink to another place, this cannot be avoided. But even if it remains in the old place, it is necessary to change the pipes right up to the insertion into the riser. At the same stage, you can change the heating radiators and the pipes going to them, if you are planning such work.

Ceiling, walls, floor

After the communications have been laid, the walls are leveled. For this, plaster or drywall () can be used. Decorative plaster is mounted or applied to the leveled walls. ().

Laminate flooring laid out

Then you need to solve one of the main tasks - tidy up the ceiling. There are several options:

  • remove old whitewash/paint and putty until smooth for painting;
  • make suspended plasterboard ceilings;
  • order and

Different ceiling finishing options require different sequences of kitchen renovations. If you are going to whitewash or paint the ceilings with water-based emulsion, you need to putty the ceiling together with plastering the walls. The plasterboard is assembled before the walls begin to be leveled, and the tension plasterboard is installed after the walls are leveled and all dirty work is completed. Sometimes even after the walls are finished.

Warm floors have become popular recently. In apartments, the most convenient option is electric heating. It is more convenient to place cable mats under the tiles, and carbon films under the laminate or linoleum. If you have individual heating, you can do it. Using centralized heating for floor heating is prohibited. It has a very high hydraulic resistance and simply blocks the movement of coolant along the riser. Also, when the heated floor comes out, the water leaves almost cold and the neighbors will freeze.

Good quality tiles or laminate are usually laid on the kitchen floor. An economical option is linoleum. Any type of coating requires a surface with height differences of no more than 5 mm per square meter. For large differences, leveling is required. The most common option is to install a concrete screed. Its minimum thickness is 3 cm. With this thickness it will not crack. Just keep in mind that not all Khrushchev buildings can be poured with ordinary concrete. The houses were built a long time ago and the load-bearing capacity of the walls may be insufficient. You need to check with the operating organization what the safety margin of your home is. If heavy concrete weighs too much, you can pour it or make a dry screed - lay fine expanded clay on the floor, and two layers of plasterboard on it.

The finishing touches are the kitchen table, chairs and sofa. Kitchen renovation in Khrushchev is completed

After the floor is made, the final stage begins in finishing the walls, if wallpaper is chosen for this. . The last stage of kitchen renovation in Khrushchev is the installation of sockets and switches. At this stage, furniture is delivered and installed. We can assume that the renovation of the kitchen in the Khrushchev building is completed.

Photo ideas for kitchen renovation in Khrushchev

The creamy design is pleasing to the eye and not at all annoying

When decorating a kitchen, the main thing is not to overdo it with color accents. There should be few of them

If you decide to make the facades bright, all other colors are neutral

The blue-steel color scheme is practically a classic. Would be good in a kitchen facing south

Nowadays fashionable modern style - strict lines without frills

White kitchen with small black accents is always relevant

The beige-brown color scheme is another traditional option for small kitchens (the cabinet on the right is a refrigerator, and under it is a drawer for vegetables)

Choosing the optimal kitchen design in a Khrushchev-era building becomes a real problem for many. And indeed, it is not so easy to place everything you need in such a small area.

Such conditions are easily explained - when the projects of houses of these series were developed, the presence of a large number of household appliances, which today has become a necessity for housewives, was not expected at all. Basically, the room was designed to accommodate a work and dining table, a couple of chairs, a stove and a refrigerator, which previously had a rather modest size. And the new residents were incredibly happy about these modest “squares”, having escaped from the nightmare of the communal kitchen.

In those days, few people thought about the design of this room, since the main thing was to place everything you needed, and to maintain cleanliness and order. But today, almost all housewives dream of having at their disposal not only a functional and comfortable room, but also one with an aesthetic interior. We will talk about how to create it and where to start the process of arranging a modern kitchen.

How to plan a room

Color direction of kitchen design

The chosen color scheme plays a big role in the design of any interior. Due to the fact that the homeowner spends the most time in the kitchen, she should be involved to the maximum extent in choosing the main shades in which the decoration will be done.

The kitchen has a source of natural light, so the choice of color for its surfaces is unlimited and depends only on the preferences of the homeowners. But, at the same time, it is necessary to remember that color design affects a person’s mood and condition - some colors make the eyes get tired, while others, on the contrary, make the eyes rest. Therefore, in order to avoid the burden of staying in this room for a long time, the color side of the design must be thought through very carefully.

The most favorable for perception are discreet light pastel colors, which can be used as the main design. And such monotony, if desired, can be somewhat “diluted” with bright or darker shades. The main thing is that different colors harmonize well with each other.

Another nuance that should be taken into account when choosing the color of the kitchen interior design is whether the window faces the north or south side of the house. If the room is illuminated by the sun most of the day, then as the main one, you can choose any color that the hostess likes best.

If the window faces the north or south side of the house, then you can choose any color as the main color

In the kitchen, the window of which faces the north side of the house, it is better to use light warm shades of beige, milky, pastel orange, green and even red.

If the kitchen is located on the north side, then preference should be given to warm and light colors

Some color schemes can be called “sunny”, since at any time of the year they create an invigorating mood of a summer day in the room. To create such an interior, you need to include yellow and orange shades. Moreover, if the kitchen is already decorated in a certain “boring” color scheme, you can enliven it with bright curtains or small decorative items in bright, warm colors.

Another color technique that will visually increase the space of a small kitchen is a glass apron with a 3D image. Nowadays, stores offer a wide range of these decorative and functional kitchen elements. In addition, they are made to order to suit the required apron size.

A beautiful and functional element of the kitchen interior - an apron

A kitchen apron chosen correctly in color and material can become a real decoration of the room, making its design exclusive. To make the right choice, we recommend that you read the article on our portal, which provides a comparative overview of the various options.

Small kitchen lighting

Properly installed and distributed lighting plays an important role in the interior of a room. It, just like color, can visually expand a room, make it more cozy and comfortable to stay in. Therefore, when developing a kitchen design, it is necessary to pay special attention to this issue, while taking into account some rules and recommendations.

  • A kitchen, especially a small one, should be well lit.
  • To achieve the desired effect, you can use multi-level lighting, which will highlight and darken the desired areas, as well as properly distribute the illumination of the most functional areas. At the same time, especially when using several sources, the lighting should not be excessive and irritate the eyesight.
  • In the design of a modern kitchen, the best option would be to use lamps with smooth and simple shapes. You should not purchase intricately designed lighting fixtures with numerous pendants and curls, since the kitchen is an area of increased pollution due to constant greasy and other fumes. It will not be easy to clean a chandelier or sconce of complex shape from such deposits.
  • A combination of large lampshades and spotlights gives an excellent decorative effect.
  • You shouldn’t be afraid to experiment, but at the same time, you need to accurately work out the illumination of areas that especially need a good overview.
  • Large chandeliers will reduce the space of a small room, so the parameters of the devices must correspond to the area they are intended to illuminate.

A luminous panel on the ceiling - both a visual expansion of space and uniform “basic” lighting
  • One of the options for lighting a small kitchen can be a suspended glass ceiling, behind which lighting is installed. Panels for such ceilings can have a variety of designs, including those imitating a false window. You can choose the appropriate option for a specific interior or even order the implementation of your own project of similar design.

  • Work area lighting can be installed under hanging cabinets and directed at the countertop and hob, making their use more comfortable. In addition, spotlights installed flush with the ceiling surface will additionally illuminate the work area, as well as the interior of the cabinets when they are opened.

In other options for arranging a table, sconces or lampshades with adjustable heights, or a chandelier with streamlined, smooth shapes can be used as lighting.

Due to the fact that the kitchen must be well lit, energy-saving LED devices are most often used as light sources, as they significantly save energy consumption.

How to choose the right lighting for a room?

I must say - this is a whole science! The selection of lighting devices is carried out taking into account a number of diverse criteria. With all the details, and with the application of online calculators, this is described in a special publication on our portal.

Finishing materials for the kitchen

To paint a prepared plasterboard ceiling, you must use water-based paint.

Slatted ceiling in the kitchen

A slatted suspended ceiling, which is easily mounted on a special suspension system attached to the main surface of the ceiling, is also inexpensive. Installation of such a covering is quick, and behind it you can also hide electrical wiring and ventilation communications. The advantage of slatted systems over plasterboard construction is not only the simpler installation process, but also the possibility of simple dismantling, for example, in emergency situations or in cases of repeated repairs. And caring for such a ceiling is incomparably easier.

Kitchen wall decoration

If the walls of the room are smooth, then their surface can be brought to perfect evenness only with a layer of putty. But, unfortunately, in Khrushchev-era apartment buildings, most often after removing the old covering, an unsightly picture with unevenness and cracks appears. Such walls require not only leveling, but also thorough repairs. All cracks and chips must be well repaired, and then the surface is treated with a primer that holds the structure of the material together. Only after this can you proceed to leveling measures, which can be done using the wet method or using dry plaster, that is, drywall.

Considering that the kitchen area in a Khrushchev-era apartment is very small, it is best to attach drywall directly to the wall without using a frame. If you want to create cabinets or shelves built into the wall from plasterboard, then you can’t do without a frame. Some craftsmen build individual stationary pieces of furniture from this material. With proper installation and reinforcement of the joints of the sheets and corners of the structure, it will operate perfectly for a long time.

Drywall is an excellent tool for perfectly leveling walls!

If you decide to update the surface of the walls using drywall, so as not to make mistakes when installing it, it makes sense to study the information that is presented in a separate article on our portal.

Plasterboard wall finishing (naturally, from moisture-resistant sheets) can be lined with various decorative materials that are suitable in their characteristics for the specific conditions of the kitchen. Vertical surfaces can be painted or covered with wallpaper, tiled with ceramic tiles, glass or apron panels made of other materials can be attached to them, etc.

Water-based compounds are used for coloring, and the wallpaper must meet certain criteria corresponding to the conditions of the kitchen. So, non-woven or vinyl wallpaper is well suited for this room, as it has the necessary characteristics - it does not absorb odors and can be cleaned of dirt using wet cleaning.

These types of wallpaper are presented in specialized stores in a wide variety, but for a small room, light-colored canvases decorated with small floral patterns or stripes of pastel colors are best suited. Large pieces of decoration on the walls will visually reduce the volume of the room and will attract the eye. Thus, all other kitchen accessories will fade into the background.

For the effect of expanding space, you can use spatial 3D wallpaper, which is most often placed in the dining area. For example, a good option would be to imitate a window, behind which there may be a blooming garden, forest, field, sea surface, or a small street of an era that evokes nostalgia.

Finishing the wall along the work area, called the “apron,” can become the only decorative decoration of the walls, relegating other surfaces to the background. Most often, ceramic tiles are used for tiling this area, as they are durable, easy to clean and give the wall a neat and aesthetic appearance.

Another option for facing the apron, which was already mentioned above and is becoming increasingly popular, is glass panels, which can be plain or with a three-dimensional pattern applied to them. Glass is easy to clean and retains its original decorative effect throughout the entire period of use.

The apron and even the entire wall of the working area can be lined with PVC panels, the range of which is growing every year. This material is attached to a wooden or metal sheathing or directly to a leveled wall using “liquid nails” glue. Plastic panels also adhere well to plasterboard surfaces, and in this case, wall cladding will be quite inexpensive.

High-quality plastic is well cleaned of grease fumes, but over time, under the influence of external influences, it can change its color, acquiring a yellowish tint. Therefore, you should choose a color in advance in which these possible changes in color tone will be minimally noticeable. Moreover, there are enough possibilities for this - the panels are produced in various color options, including ones that quite reliably imitate a wooden or stone surface.

Many owners of high-rise buildings will like wall cladding with natural wood, which can be used for any surface of the room, as well as for the manufacture or cladding of cabinet facades. Depending on the interior design, lining is used to cover the entire surface of the walls or only their panel area.

The advantage of wood finishing is the ability to use it for a long time and give it different shades. If the textured wood pattern is beautiful and needs to be preserved, then the surface of the material must be coated with a water-based varnish, which will also protect the structure from moisture and various kitchen fumes. In addition, wood trim can be painted with tinting varnishes in one or even several shades.

Wood cladding can be combined with other materials, such as ceramic tiles or wallpaper.

The only important drawback of using wooden trim in a small Khrushchev-era kitchen is the need to install it on the sheathing, which, together with the lining, will “eat” at least 30 mm on each side of the room. For a very small kitchen, this is not as small as it might seem.

If, after all, this particular material is chosen for finishing, then it should be selected to the overall design according to the textured pattern of the wood species. For example, if the façade of the furniture is decorated as oak, then the lining must match this pattern and tone, otherwise the entire design effect will be ruined.

In addition to the materials mentioned above, other decorative finishes are also used for wall cladding, fortunately there is no shortage of them in hardware stores. The choice mainly depends on the preferences and financial capabilities of the homeowners.

Furniture selection

When choosing furniture for a small kitchen, you should pay attention to the designers’ recommendations, which will help you rationally place all the necessary items in a small area. In such conditions, you involuntarily have to make every centimeter of the room functional.

  • A large number of small items and household appliances visually reduces the space, introducing the impression of clutter into the room. Therefore, built-in appliances hidden behind the furniture facade will solve this problem.

  • You should not install a microwave or electric oven on the work surface of the countertop, as it will take up a lot of usable space. The best option would be to hide it in one of the sections of the wall cabinet or place it on a special bracket mounted above the table.
  • The kitchen should be convenient both for cooking and for regular cleaning. Therefore, furniture must be selected and installed so that access to any area of the room is provided.
  • The placement of kitchen accessories on the work surface must be organized in such a way that the housewife has everything at hand. For example, a drying rack for dishes and cutlery should be located in the sink area.
  • To save as much free space as possible in a kitchen with a small area, designers recommend using a corner or linear layout.

  • Kitchen rails, which can accommodate a large number of kitchen accessories, will help to significantly save space. These devices are fixed to the “apron”, so if you plan to use them in the design of the room, it is worth providing a suitable material for cladding this section of the wall.
  • Another device that facilitates the use of the kitchen work area and saves space are pull-out cabinets used instead of conventional shelves.

  • In compact kitchens it can be quite difficult to find a place for a dining table. Its location will depend on the layout of the kitchen and the number of family members. For example, if two or three people live in an apartment, then a window sill that smoothly turns into a table top can be used for this area. This model is suitable not only for a family meal, but also for working in the evening hours, when everyone at home is already asleep.

Another table option can be a folding design, which is used only when eating. At other times, the tabletop is folded and will not interfere with the housewife in any way, since it does not take up any usable space.

In some cases, a solution to the problem of organizing a dining area can be a retractable table that is hidden in one of the cabinets in the work area. However, this option is suitable for a small family of two or three people.

For those who dream of having a cozy round table in the kitchen, but it is impossible to use it for a small room, there are folding designs that take up very little space. When purchasing such a piece of furniture, it is necessary to measure in advance the area where it will be located when unfolded.

Examples of completed design projects for decorating a small kitchen

Next, we will present several design solutions that can be used in Khrushchev-era kitchens. You can try one of them or individual elements of design and layout in your kitchen space.

Kitchen with orange facade

Correctly selected colors of furniture and other accessories in a room can create a special atmosphere in it. Orange has been proven to be the color of joy, uplifting the mood and promoting emotional balance in a person. The combination of tropical orange with other colors that harmonize with it gives coziness and comfort to the interior, and at the same time does not contribute to the visual reduction of space. In this project, the main eye-catching object is the facade of the cabinets in the working area. The rest of the color scheme organically combines with it, since orange interacts well with white, steel and light green shades.

An important role is played by the distribution and design of areas in which kitchen utensils are located. For example, the free space above the hob, lined with white ceramic tiles, contributes to the visual expansion of the room. In addition, it was perfect for securing the railing, the length of which turned out to be quite enough to accommodate kitchen accessories. The fume hood, located above the railing and masked by the doors, does not protrude forward, so it will not hang over the owner’s head and limit the space.

Despite the large dimensions of the refrigerator, it fits perfectly into the linear row of the work area and took a place in the background, mainly due to the correctly chosen color.

This interior has a corner layout, so there are two possibilities for placing the sink - this is a corner area or part of the countertop installed along the wall opposite the window.

As you can see from this project, it is quite possible, even in a small area, with proper zoning, to place all the furniture and other kitchen accessories necessary for the kitchen.

Red and white kitchen option

This illustration shows a kitchen, the facade of which is made in red, which somewhat narrows the already very small room. To let light into the room and expand the space due to it, the owners had to abandon the curtains. In this case, the interior design may look unfinished, and light Roman shades or horizontal blinds are well suited for a window opening in such a situation.

The rich tones are diluted by the white color of the “apron”, decorated with ceramic tiles, worktops and dining areas, as well as metal elements included in the design, which reflect light both under artificial lighting and natural light coming from the window.

In general, the design of this kitchen clearly shows taste and a desire to decorate the room in a modern style. The window sill space is rationally used, into which a semicircular folding dining table is successfully fitted. We must pay tribute to the designer who managed to place all the necessary accessories in such a compact area. It is clearly seen that when planning the arrangement of the room, every centimeter of it was used and many cabinets were provided that can accommodate a large amount of dishes, as well as dry food.

The exhaust unit was successfully selected and installed, which, just like in the first interior, has modest dimensions and is perfectly camouflaged behind the facade doors.

If the family living in this apartment consists of two or three people, then they can easily fit together in a kitchen space designed in this way.

Small bright kitchen

This kitchen space layout combines a work and dining area. This was achieved through the rational use of the window sill space, into which it was possible to fit a compact sink and floor cabinets.

The dining table top is installed perpendicular to the work surface, which has the same height. Thus, both the way it is placed and the shape resemble a bar counter. Thanks to the combination of two tabletops into one complex, up to five people can simultaneously gather at the table without experiencing inconvenience or cramped conditions. To achieve integrity and neatness of the furniture part of the work area, in which the upper part of the cabinets is installed, it is combined with the ceiling surface by a box that hides the ventilation communication pipes.

Despite the compactness of the room, the designer did not refuse a single accessory necessary for the kitchen. In addition, there is quite a lot of free space left in the room for the housewife to move around while cooking.

Several materials were used to decorate the surfaces - the ceiling is equipped with a suspended single-level plasterboard structure, into which lighting fixtures are built-in. Two walls are aligned and painted to match the furniture facade. One of the vertical surfaces is decorated with wallpaper in deep dark colors - it seems to limit the light space of the room.

Empire style kitchen

Some housewives, despite the small kitchen area, still choose classic design styles. This project presents an option that includes elements of the Empire style, resulting in an elegantly decorated room that is pleasant to be in. In the interior we found an organic combination of classic shapes and colors for the chosen direction of furniture and modern household appliances.

Cabinets and countertops have curved, smooth shapes, which increases the comfort of use of the room and gives an aesthetically attractive appearance to both the working and dining areas.

For the furniture, the classic style color of “baked milk” was chosen, which visually increases the volume of the room, standing out against the background of the wall surface, painted in a soft pastel red shade. Moreover, in this project, a well-chosen red tone does not weigh down the interior, but gives it depth.

Modern metalized facades of household appliances do not come to the fore, but fit harmoniously into the overall design of the room.

In the design of this interior, every little detail has been thought out to support the style:

  • decorative plates mounted above wall cabinets;
  • doors with glass facades simulating thin elegant partitions;
  • fittings and soft reliefs of furniture facades;
  • a wide ceiling plinth, the color of which is several tones darker than the shade of the walls, and therefore does not protrude to the fore, but maintains the neatness of the upper part of the room;
  • an interesting version of the lighting fixture above the dining area, which has a lifting and lowering mechanism;
  • tulle curtains gathered in elegant folds.

The interior is enlivened by the greenery of plants arranged in a compositional order.

The designer rationally used the space of the room, including everything necessary in the work area. Moreover, it is easy to imagine a similar design option even in a smaller kitchen, since one of the middle cabinets can be excluded from the kitchen wall, while maintaining the overall composition. Furniture of similar shapes, as well as well-chosen calm colors, will not reduce the space of the room, so they can easily be used for a very small kitchen.

Kitchen in pistachio tones

In general, apartment owners in high-rise buildings prefer to decorate their kitchens in modern directions, but deliberately or unwittingly use elements of traditional styles in them. The project, executed in light white and pistachio tones, is a clear confirmation of this concept.

The work area in this interior is furnished with modern furniture, lined with household appliances.

The dining part of the kitchen is fully consistent with the Provence style with its floral wallpaper on the wall, the shape of the furniture and the lamp fixed above the table.

The harmony of the selected shades makes the room neat and calm, so in the created environment it is pleasant to both cook and eat, since the design does not contain unpleasant irritating factors.

Several materials were used for interior decoration, which can easily be found and matched by color in hardware stores. The “apron” of the working area is lined with gray plastic panels, and if desired, the material can be replaced with ceramic tiles or glass panels of a suitable design.

The window opening is an element that divides the room into two zones. This division is also emphasized by the different decoration of the front wall. On the work area side, almost monochromatic wallpaper was used, matched to match the façade of the furniture cabinets.

Part of the front wall, as well as the entire vertical surface of the dining area, is lined with wallpaper with a floral pattern, made in harmonious shades that match the overall color scheme of the interior.

Thanks to the light pistachio color of the furniture facade, as well as the “airiness” of the tulle, the interior looks light and aesthetic.

If you like this design, but the kitchen being designed has more modest dimensions, you can make some adjustments to it to fit it into a smaller area. For example, a good solution would be to install a dining table near a window, and instead of long tulle, use short curtains, Roman light transparent curtains or blinds. The worktop can also be shortened by excluding one of the floor and wall cabinets from the set. In terms of the color and shape of the facade, this design option will fit perfectly and will not visually reduce the space of a small kitchen.

Small kitchen in warm colors

The interior, made in warm natural shades, will be to the taste of many, as they do not tire the eye, and thanks to this, staying in the room becomes more comfortable. Wood cladding will never go out of fashion, as it can give a room coziness and convey the natural warmth of this material. They go well with any type of wood and the green shades in which they are decorated. They have a beneficial effect on the state of the human psyche, acting calmingly, which is especially important for residents of large cities.

Although the interior does not contain bright, expressive color accents, it cannot be called boring - the designer managed to achieve this effect thanks to the right combination of selected shades.

An atmosphere of calm and tranquility reigns in such a kitchen - thanks to the wooden finish and the successful combination of colors.

The cabinets, the façade of which is lined with wooden slats, are located right under the ceiling of the room and are quite high, making the room seem taller.

The wooden cladding of the wall cabinets harmonizes perfectly with glass inserts that do not limit the space, so the upper part of the set looks light. A small-sized hood with a steel color, although not hidden behind the front panel, is organically integrated into the composition of the row.

The floor covering, which is ceramic tiles imitating round stone masonry, also suits the chosen design well. However, if this particular material is chosen for floor covering, then it is advisable to provide heating for the surface, otherwise it will be cold.

Thus, only natural colors and materials are collected in an organic composition in the interior, so it can be called eco-design, which is becoming increasingly popular among urban residents.

The kitchen area was used very rationally, so the designer managed to fit a decent-sized dining table on it, at which the whole family can gather together. In addition, the remaining free space will allow the housewife to move freely along the entire working area while cooking.

Kitchen design options

* * * * * * *

To summarize, it must be said that despite the small dimensions of the kitchen in the Khrushchev, taking into account the recommendations and advice of designers, it is quite possible to create a cozy and comfortable environment. The main thing is to use your imagination and optimally rationally plan the location of all the equipment necessary for a given room. And, of course, choose the right color direction for the finish.

Video - What can you turn a cramped Khrushchev kitchen into?

The 5 m2 kitchen is quite compact. At the same time, it can become extremely convenient if you approach the issue creatively. Many people see the main problem as being able to place a refrigerator, hob, sink, storage cabinets and a dining table in addition in such a small space.

So, let's pick up a pencil

First, let's face it honestly and write it down on a piece of paper so we don't forget anything.

  1. How often do you go to the store?
  2. How often do you cook?
  3. How many people are in your family? How often do you use all 4 burners? Maybe two is usually enough for you?
  4. How many people should be seated at one table in the kitchen?
  5. How many dishes are constantly in use?
  6. Can some of the kitchen utensils be moved to the balcony, pantry or any other storage location?

Now you can start designing your kitchen.

Work triangle

Now we take a tape measure and measure our walls. If the length of the street wall is 2.5 m, then the remaining wall is 2 m. So, one wall with a window and the opposite with a door. In total, we have 8 m of linear walls along which we can place our set with a refrigerator. Usually one wall goes under the dining area. There's not much left.

What must be distributed throughout the kitchen:

  • Refrigerator – 60 cm.
  • Washing machine – 60 cm.
  • Gas stove – 60 cm.
  • Sink – 60 cm.

Total, 2.4 m for household appliances with a sink. Let's try to fit this into our space. The upper cabinets can be placed as you please, the main thing to remember is that it is better to place a dish dryer above the sink, and a hood above the stove.

If possible, it is better to take the washing machine into the bathroom. However, you can manage to find a place for it too.

Costly option

The refrigerator can be placed in a mini-corridor in a niche, which is cut off from the bathtub by installing a shower stall. You will have to go through the dismantling of the wall, renovation of the bathroom and give up the bathtub. But we win a place in the kitchen for a full-fledged table.

Tricky with placement

We place the refrigerator near the window, the sink in the corner, and the stove near the entrance. It is convenient because there is a fairly spacious tabletop. It is possible to place a washing machine near the refrigerator.

But in terms of security, this option has a drawback, because... When entering, you might accidentally push boiling water from the stove onto your feet. This can be easily solved if you add a small side, about 15-20 centimeters, which will protect against accidents.

The second option for a refrigerator by the window also causes quite controversial opinions. So, the refrigerator stands near the window, 10 cm from it there is a stove, behind it there is a sink hidden through a cabinet with drawers in the corner, and near the door a narrow tabletop of 40 cm rests on the lower cabinet. For safety reasons, the corner is rounded and equipped with open shelves.

The refrigerator needs high-quality cooling of the rear radiator grille. She's always hot with him. If there is a stove next to an oven, then a problem arises. For long service life of cooling devices, they must be installed away from heating devices. Also, do not place them near radiators and heating pipes.

The void between the stove and the refrigerator can be filled with cargo.

What if you think about it some more?

The minimized version provides a comfortable dining area and an ultra-compact set.

The refrigerator, sink and stove line up along the side wall. Opposite the entrance in the corner by the window there is a dining area. In this case, you can put a kitchen corner in which you can put a lot of all kinds of utensils and organize the storage of dry products, for example, groceries.

The dining table will act as a cutting surface while preparing dishes.

What if you need spacious storage boxes?

The stove and sink can be placed along the street wall with a window. In this case, the refrigerator will stand in a free corner.

This adds spacious cabinets and a spacious work surface. Especially if you use a built-in oven and a domino hob instead of a stove.

Feeling cramped and want some space?

Let's try to build a working triangle along the window. Cold zone opposite the door. Next is a sink, a small cabinet and a stove. In the free corner there is a chic table with a soft corner.

If you place a table along the wall from the door, and behind it a wide cabinet, opposite them will fit a refrigerator, a spacious closet, a sink in the corner and another part of the set along the short wall. At the same time, wall cabinets will occupy three walls, absorbing all the accumulated goods of the hostess.

If you prefer to dine in the living room, then the task is simplified and the set grows. You get a full kitchen with cabinets, a chic countertop and a refrigerator facing the door from the window.

If you modernize this option, you can build a place for lunch near the window, where you can have a snack together.

What about the washing machine?

It can be placed between the sink and the stove.

Or between a mini refrigerator and a sink under the hob. And the oven will move to a microwave with convection.

Take a closer look at mini refrigerators that can be installed under the countertop. They take up little space. But you can win the desired cutting plane.

If you build a strong frame, then the following option is possible:

In this case, the main thing is that the frame on which the refrigerator rests can withstand the weight of the unit and products. If you continue this pencil case upward, you can add several shelves.

Do you still think that 5 sq. meters - is this a hopeless death sentence? Then look for a competent designer who will help you create comfort in this space. Design of a small kitchen with an area of 5 square meters. m in Khrushchev is not so simple, however, judging by the photos in interior catalogs, there are no tasks that are impossible for designers. By properly planning your workspace, you can avoid most of the difficulties that may arise in such cramped circumstances. Modern trends in interior design and organization of the work area will create a comfortable and cozy atmosphere.

Functional placement of furniture in a compact kitchen of 5 square meters

Efficient use of space

Thinking through the design of a kitchen 5 sq. m in Khrushchev, you need to use some tips that will help you properly organize a small space:

Important! The higher the furniture, the lighter and more spacious the interior looks. A set that is too low will create the effect of a cluttered space.

Optimal layout options

The smaller the room, the more difficult it is to maintain a balance between the beauty of the interior and practicality. Few people would want to sacrifice their own comfort for an extra meter or limit themselves in possibilities due to lack of space. How to think through the layout in a tiny kitchen of 5 square meters. meters in a Khrushchev-era apartment building, without any problems placing on it not only a stove with a sink, but also a refrigerator and other household appliances?

Bright U-shaped kitchen design with tempered glass shelves

L-shaped layout

In photos of design projects you can often see a corner kitchen set; this L-shaped layout is used in both large and small kitchens of no more than 5 square meters. m. In small rooms, both corner walls are fully occupied. Often one of the ends of the headset is adjacent to the door. It is better to round the corners of the headset, especially near the doorway.

A classic example of a corner kitchen in a small area

Smooth outlines look much more harmonious and beautiful in the interior, in contrast to sharp corners. If the kitchen is not square, but elongated, then it is better to place the refrigerator and stove along the long wall, while the sink can be moved close to the short wall. In the opposite corner it is good to place a small corner sofa with a compact table and hanging open shelves and cabinets.

Note! It is better to equip the area by the window as a workspace, since the kitchen area is only 5 square meters. every extra centimeter is valuable.

Corners in a small kitchen should not be empty. To free up some space, you can place a sink in the corner. For convenience, it is better to choose a beveled or radius corner tabletop with a narrowed short side. This will provide enough space in the kitchen for a hob or stove and refrigerator.
Instead of a sink, sometimes a stove or hob is placed in a corner. If you like this option, try to choose the most compact model. At the same time, it is also worth remembering the predominance of smooth lines in a corner kitchen - rounded outlines will become a small trick that distracts from the modest dimensions of the kitchen.

U-shaped layout

With this option for arranging furniture and equipment, three walls are occupied at once. Thus, you can organize a comfortable work triangle with the same distance to the refrigerator, stove and sink. To make it more convenient for you and your household to work in the kitchen and move around it, the passage should be no narrower than 120 cm. The U-shaped layout is not only one of the most comfortable in everyday life, it also provides a lot of opportunities for non-trivial design solutions.

Vertical block at the door

In the kitchen of 5 sq. meters, the highest and largest objects are most often located in the corners; this layout option can be seen in the photo of kitchen interiors. This technique allows you to visually make bulky elements of the headset less noticeable, giving them a more elegant look. If you need a large number of spacious shelves and appliances, you can put several tall cabinets in the kitchen at once - a pencil case in the middle of the wall, a tall unit with a built-in oven and, for example, a refrigerator in the corner by the window.

Due to tall pieces of furniture, you can significantly increase the capacity of the set, but such an arrangement greatly reduces the working area. In a five-meter kitchen you can comfortably fit an oven, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator, but a vertical cabinet near the door will not only lengthen the corridor, “stealing” valuable space from the kitchen, but will also create an extra sharp corner, which is quite dangerous.

Kitchen option without refrigerator

The refrigerator is often the largest item in the kitchen. Often this is what is sacrificed for the sake of additional space, placing the refrigerator on an insulated balcony or in the hallway. This arrangement is not very convenient if you approach it from a practical point of view, but it becomes possible to arrange a cozy dining area in the kitchen with a good table and a soft corner sofa, or to expand the work area.

Kitchen with furniture arranged along all walls

If there is enough free space for a refrigerator in the hallway or loggia, then in the kitchen of 5 sq. meters you can easily do without it.

Kitchen in one row

The simplest and most economical option for designing a workspace is to arrange furniture and equipment along one wall. Despite the fact that minimalism is on trend in 2017, such organization of space may not appeal to everyone. By removing the large refrigerator from the kitchen, you can better organize your workspace by conveniently placing the stove and sink.

Kitchen in two rows

This layout is otherwise called parallel, when all the furniture and appliances are located along opposite walls. With such an arrangement of the kitchen unit, there may not be enough space for a dining area, but there is room to expand in terms of organizing the workspace.

Compact kitchen in two rows

Important! To create the most convenient kitchen triangle, place the sink and stove on the wall opposite the refrigerator.

Kitchen interior with furniture on both sides

For convenience and free movement around the kitchen while cooking, try not to clutter up the space in the center; the minimum distance between the facades of the set should be wider than 1.2 m. A kitchen furnished in two rows, with a simple and strict design, looks more spacious and brighter - there is a window in this case is completely open, and the furniture does not create obstacles to daylight.

Interior Design

Even in a tiny kitchen of 5 square meters. m, you can bring to life almost any new design that is relevant in 2017 - in the photo you can see a variety of interior design options. Pretentious Rococo and Baroque, which are characterized by an abundance of decor, bright colors, gilding, complex furniture design, etc., will not fit into a small space. However, there are other styles that can be used.
