Hi all!

I'm tired of when it's raining, the space under the hood is always dirty because water from under the right front wheel gets onto the crankshaft and alternator belt, and from there it flies in all directions. I spent a couple of days thinking about how to stop this. This is easier on Priora - they have a ready-made boot that you can buy. But I don’t need the easy way :)

Impressions during manufacturing - it seemed to me that the protection, despite the simplicity of the design, was more difficult to make (compared to the cabin filter adapter) due to the fact that there were no drawings and I had to reinvent the wheel, repeatedly trying on the parts as they were manufactured. See what I came up with below.

To preempt some questions, I would like to clarify the following:

Everything works quietly, does not wobble or make noise;
- you can check the belt tension by sticking your hand next to the right wheel; this does not require much effort;
- there is no need to remove the protection to adjust the belt;
- the homemade product is very easy to install;
- To install it, you need to remove the timing case.
- the design weighs a little.

This design- an experiment, so it can and should be modified by anyone who wants.

It can be even worse.

I have engine protection, to the right are shields from sheet aluminum for guard. They worked poorly, I didn’t notice much of a difference.

Taking advantage of the moment, I washed the engine with a sink high pressure, especially since he hasn’t washed himself for 7 years. It’s more pleasant to tinker with a clean engine. By the way, there’s nothing wrong with that; after washing, I left it in the sun with the hood open for 2-2.5 hours. Then everything started up, and most importantly, it went))).

... and we begin to get wise. I used cardboard for the layout.

I transferred the cardboard casing to metal, cut it out and folded it over. I made the protection wall without a mock-up, the part is simple, so the finished result is shown right away. Fastenings - M3 bolts.

And this is the view from the inside. The cut in the corner is a jamb in the making. Subsequently, a triangular brass insert was inserted into the cut and properly soldered.

During the measurement process, I came to the conclusion that it was necessary to make a cutout in place for the generator pulley. I took a circle of cardboard with a diameter of 65 mm, applied it, outlined it and cut it out with a grinder with an almost sharpened circle - it turned out to be very convenient.

Then I modeled a bracket from a strip of cardboard and made it from a 2.5 mm strip. When adjusting the brackets, I placed a flat wooden strip approximately 10mm thick on the generator belt to maintain the same gap between the casing and the belt itself. Then, using a strip of cardboard, I estimated the shape and length of the second bracket.

Then I took it apart and applied the first coat of paint. I polished the surface of the brackets and painted the other side.

I painted it again and assembled it with M3 bolts. On the outside, the threads of the bolts are ground down flush with the nuts, and the whole thing is polished.

I glued on the E-shaped seal left over from the cabin filter adapter.

Let's talk a little about how dirt gets into the engine compartment, the alternator belt is to blame; from under the front right wheel, water and dirt flies onto the belt, which, when rotated, scatters it in all directions. In this article we will look at a way to eliminate this drawback using the example of a VAZ 2109 car.

It will not rattle or make any extraneous sounds.
Interfere with checking belt tension.
To adjust the tension you will not need to remove the protective cover.
The design is not very heavy. The installation process is simple and straightforward.

Instructions for making a protective casing

To make your work more pleasant, it is advisable to wash the engine compartment, then take measurements at the place where the casing will be installed.


To make a model, the author recommends using cardboard, then the resulting elements of the model are transferred to the material from which the belt protection will be made; the side parts are recommended to be made of thin metal, as it bends well and will allow you to bend the required form, and the back wall is made of plywood 0.8 mm thick, and if desired, put tin on the top. The item has no complex design, so the author published a photo of the finished part.

In the process of measuring the part at the installation site, the author came to the conclusion that it was necessary to make a cutout for the generator pulley in place; to do this, a circle with a diameter of 65 mm was cut out of cardboard, which should be placed on the marked place, outlined and cut out using a grinder.


Then a bracket was modeled from cardboard, which was made of metal 2.5 mm thick. In order for the gaps between the casing and the generator belt to be equal, you need to lay a wooden block 10 millimeters thick. The second bracket should be made using the same principle.


After everything is ready, the external parts need to be painted, and the brackets need to be polished or also painted. The paint should be applied in two or three layers and after the paint has completely dried using M3 bolts and self-locking nuts, the brackets are screwed to the casing body.

Important: The threads should be on the outside and cut flush with the nuts.
It is advisable to stick it on the ends rubber compressor and then install finished part on automobile, as you can see in the photo, the manufactured protection not only prevents the belt from throwing dirt around the engine compartment, but also prevents moisture from getting to the spray site.
