Newborns are sensitive - so the choice must be approached with all responsibility. To create safe conditions baby, you need to make sure that the blanket meets certain requirements.

Blankets for newborns are the very first blankets for a baby.

When choosing a blanket for a newborn, carefully monitor whether the child has any allergic reactions. Then you should avoid down, wool, and fur products, so as not to accidentally harm the child. Do not buy cheap market products, it is better to purchase it in a company store, always with a quality certificate. If the seller refuses to provide one, find another one, do not risk the health of your child. Remember that one option is not enough - you need at least two. One is to use at home, the other is to use while walking. Even if your baby was born in the summer, he will most likely need a warm outdoor blanket in the fall and winter. Buy blankets that are a little larger in size for the next season, as the baby will grow during this time. It’s also better to buy two products for home – warm and lighter. Don't buy blankets with large piles that fall out easily, lots of toxic dyes, or large pieces that your newborn might touch. Choose warm, sunny colors, avoid aggressive ones. Cool colors can make your child capricious, too bright ones can scare them, while calm and warm colors, on the contrary, will delight the child.

Any product that comes into contact with the child’s body must be made taking into account certain requirements so as not to harm him

Which materials are better?

The most popular materials: down, wool, linen, synthetics, flannel, fleece, cotton wool. Let's look at each of the options.

  1. Pooh. Very warm material, suitable for winter use. Soft, retains heat well, but has some disadvantages. Firstly, down quickly absorbs moisture, but slowly gets rid of it. Secondly, feather mites live in it, causing allergies. Finally, it is extremely difficult to care for. It cannot be washed, otherwise it will roll up and lose all its properties. Have to use dry cleaning services. In addition, you must constantly clean the product with a steamer to eliminate mites. Constant drying is also necessary. Duvets for children are light, quilted, and consist of filling and a fabric cover. It's good to walk with them in winter weather. At home, your baby will feel hot under the down stuffing.

    The filling for the blanket is down, warm, light, soft, but not suitable for allergy sufferers

  2. Wool. Wool preserves dry heat, having good moisture exchange and air conductivity, beneficial properties. Kids don’t get tired under it, and the product is lightweight. Woolen blankets are divided into quilted - consisting of a fabric cover and filling, woven - they are tucked into a duvet cover and used in the fall or winter, knitted - they are well suited for cool summer weather, but they cannot be used by very small children. The downside is that wool requires special care, ticks and moths love it, and it can cause severe allergies.

    Camel wool filling is the warmest, healthiest and most natural, but can also cause allergies

  3. Linen. Lightweight, hygroscopic blankets that are used in the summer season.

    Ecological natural linen blanket in a cotton cover is optimal solution for summer

  4. Tale. Cotton, pleasant material. It allows air to pass through well, and the child is protected from excess sweat. Easy to care for - dries quickly and retains its shape. Suitable for walking in summer.

    Children's flannelette blankets provide the maximum level of comfort

  5. Synthetic fillers. Cheap material, Not allergic. Lightweight, soft, slightly less warm than natural counterparts. Mites, mold and mildew do not take root in it. It is easy to wash and retains its original appearance for a long time. The only negative is a small greenhouse effect.

    Synthetic filling for blankets and bedspreads - inexpensive, lightweight, non-allergenic material

  6. Fleece. Lightweight, breathable, hypoallergenic soft material. Ideal for a walk in the summer.

    Fleece blankets – advantageous combination economy, practicality, convenience and beauty

  7. Cotton wool. Warm filler. Non-allergenic, breathable. But it doesn’t dry well, clumps up, loses its shape and that’s it. useful qualities. Too heavy for newborns.

    Cotton wool in a blanket is a material whose quality has been tested for many decades

  8. Bamboo. Such products are expensive. But at the same time they are soft, durable, silky, pleasant to the body, and retain heat well. Caring for them is not the most difficult. Has an antiseptic effect, ventilates well, quickly absorbs and evaporates excess moisture. Before use, leave it spread out inside a well-ventilated room for two hours to make it more luxurious. Once a year or six months, ventilate for seven hours and vacuum. It does not need any other cleaning.

    Bamboo fiber filling – environmentally friendly natural material which will give you a comfortable sleep

Most materials require separate duvet covers. It is better to choose them from natural cotton or linen soft fabrics. Knitted blankets are not suitable for babies - they are too stiff and not warm enough.

How to care?

There are labels on the tags or packages for the care of blankets made from different materials.

Caring for a blanket depends entirely on the material. Read carefully the cleaning rules for the planned material on the Internet, on the label or from the seller. Knowing some simple rules will help you avoid accidentally ruining your baby blanket. Try not to buy complex materials - you will only spend too much. General requirements: give up high temperatures, carefully straighten the stuffing when drying, periodically ventilate the product to remove excess odors.

The warmth of the blanket

The degree of warmth (the warming qualities of blankets) is very often displayed on the packaging of the blanket in the form of dots

The heat level can be determined by reading the label. There are several points indicated there, from one to five. Determine by their number.

  • One point. A lightweight option, suitable only for warm summer weather.
  • Two points. An ordinary light blanket. Can be used for walking during cool summer days or at home.
  • Three dots. Option for warm autumn or spring weather. Medium option for medium temperatures.
  • Four points. Warm option. Suitable for late autumn, early spring, late-early winter. Heats well, but very coldy it's not enough.
  • Five points. The warmest option. It will warm your child in cold weather, preventing him from catching a cold or getting sick.

Transformable blanket

An envelope blanket is a useful transformer that will come in handy both on a walk and at home

Convenient, practical thing. It combines a blanket and an envelope for a newborn. You can turn the first into the second different ways– zipper, buttons, snaps, ribbons. This option is ideal for outdoor walks in cold weather.

The outer part of the blanket is waterproof raincoat fabric with water-repellent impregnation, the inner part is warm, soft milky fleece

With basic sewing skills, you can sew a transformable blanket with your own hands. It can be used as a classic blanket, as an envelope for discharge and for walks, or as a play mat or mattress pad. The requirements for such products are the same as for others.

Blanket envelope for discharge

Some people purchase separate elegant envelopes for discharge. But this is irrational - you won’t be able to use a blanket with bows and ruffles for a long time, and cleaning it will be a real hassle. It is much easier to buy an envelope and purchase or make accessories for it yourself, which can be removed at the end of the celebration.

Examples of such accessories.

In addition to beauty, choose a hypoallergenic envelope blanket for your newly born baby and eliminate any dangers for the child.

Blanket sizes

Approximate ratio of crib sizes, bedding and child’s age

The choice should depend on the size of the baby and the crib. Blankets for the next seasons are usually bought a size or two larger, since the child will grow noticeably in a few months. Most small option– 60 by 120 centimeters. It is not very practical - you cannot wrap your baby in it on a walk, and after a few months he will be too small to sleep. The most common options are 135x100 cm, 105x115 cm, 90x120 cm, 100x80 cm. It is better to buy a size for growth, and not exactly in size - at the beginning of their lives, children grow very quickly, and the purchased blanket may become too small after two months. The most great option is 110x140cm, it can even last for a couple of years. But you can make such a choice only if you have a large enough crib or if your baby is large - such a large product will only bring discomfort to miniature children.

Before or immediately after the baby leaves his warm and cozy place under the mother’s heart, you will need to arrange for him an equally comfortable place to sleep and wake.

As a rule, after arriving from the maternity hospital, each newborn is faced with a new, unfamiliar environment, the only calm island in which is his first crib.

In order for the child to feel good in it, parents need to choose the appropriate bedding: a mattress, a thick sheet and, of course, a blanket. The latter will allow you to recreate the usual warm atmosphere, in which until recently a tiny man grew and developed happily and carefree.

Today you will learn how to choose a blanket for a newborn by analyzing all the options on the market. Armed with useful and necessary information, you will be able to approach the purchase, as they say, with feeling, sense and order.

From this article you will learn:

Children's goods stores offer a huge number of blankets and blankets. A wide range of bedding often prevents a correct and objective choice, and forces the average consumer to be guided only visual perception goods. But beauty is not the main thing, right?

When choosing and subsequently purchasing a blanket for a newborn, you need to study it thoroughly, taking into account the following characteristics of the product:

  • heat conductivity;
  • air exchange;
  • hygroscopicity;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • environmental friendliness.

Compliance with the above characteristics, as well as the performance properties of blankets, as a rule, is determined by their filler. Therefore, your closest attention should be directed to it.

What are blankets for newborns made from and what are the raw materials?

For our precious little ones, modern manufacturers offer blankets for every taste, color and budget:

  • downy They are considered the warmest, lightest and most versatile, because they can be used both on a walk and at home.
  • woolen. Warm, easy to care for and hygroscopic products.
  • synthetic. Lightweight, warm, quick-drying, hypoallergenic blankets that are very easy to care for.
  • linen Light, hygroscopic and natural, which is good for the warm season.
  • flannelette. Comfortable and hypoallergenic blankets made from 100% cotton.
  • silk. Expensive, but incredibly light, wear-resistant, hypoallergenic and versatile blankets. It’s not hot under them either in summer or winter, but it’s better to use them at home.
  • fleece. Beautiful, delicate, pleasant to the touch, light and comfortable, they come in very handy on a walk and at home.
  • fur. Well-warming, practical and, often, double-sided: with one - fabric base, on the other - sheep fur.
  • cotton wool Once popular blankets that hold heated air well under them.

Detailed characteristics

Duvets for newborns are filled with goose or swan down and are available in three varieties:

  • lightened. Thin, almost weightless, suitable for the summer season;
  • cassette Dense and resistant to cold, therefore used in winter;
  • demi-season. Ideal for use during the transition period - spring, autumn.

One of the disadvantages of using a duvet is the risk of provoking allergic reactions in the child, and therefore you should be careful with it. Another negative property of duvets is their low air exchange rate, which is the reason why children get steamy under them.

Wool blankets for newborns are made from hypoallergenic camel, goat, sheep, and llama alpaca wool. Each one provides excellent warmth without overheating the baby. The air exchange underneath is perfect, as is the thermal insulation. The moisture that appears will quickly evaporate, which means the child will sleep sweetly and serenely.

Blankets for newborns with synthetic filling (sintepon, holofiber, isosoft or comforter) are widely popular. Besides the fact that they are absolutely safe for babies, they are produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. There are standard blankets, and there are transformers - models that take the shape of an envelope in a matter of seconds.

The disadvantage of these products is their low moisture permeability, and therefore they should be used when the temperature environment low enough, otherwise, the child will sweat with all the consequences.

Linen and flannelette blankets are best suited for use in summer: they do not electrify, are highly hygroscopic and well regulate temperature balance. Under them the baby will not be hot and very comfortable.

Important nuances of choosing a blanket

We have figured out the fillings, types of blankets, their disadvantages and advantages. But in order for a product to truly meet all the expectations placed on it, it must:

  • Do not pose a hidden threat to the baby's health. This means that it should not contain toxic substances or dangerous dyes. Their function is to soften the fabric and give the product an attractive appearance. But no one can guarantee that such additions will not cause harm to the child, especially to the one just born.
  • Match the season. No matter how good a blanket is, it should be selected depending on the current season.

You should not wrap your baby in a warm blanket in the summer and a cold blanket in the winter. You should (preferably) have two or three types of blankets at your disposal:

  • for a home where the air temperature ranges from +19 to +24 degrees or more;
  • for spring and autumn walks;
  • for walks in winter.
  • Avoid being infected by bacteria and bed mites. Down and cotton wool are not protected from such situations, and therefore such fillers are conditionally suitable for newborns.
  • Give a feeling of comfort. Toddlers may protest if you cover them with an overly heavy blanket that literally “presses” on them, a blanket that does not allow air to pass through, since it will be hot under it, and a blanket that is “scratchy” or with tight stitching, which causes inconvenience for obvious reasons.

Now you are ready to choose a blanket, we hope you already know what product you and your newborn toddler need.

Each mother is faced with choosing a blanket for a newborn. In fact, not even one blanket, but a set of blankets for all occasions: in bed, in a stroller, in the heat, in the cold. If you have not yet decided which fillers and materials are better, then in my publication I will try to dot the T’s.
At a time when I was not particularly concerned about the qualities of things such as ease of care, hygroscopicity and I was not so pretentious about tactile qualities, stereotypes prevailed over me that the best is all natural. Let's try to overcome stereotypes and consider what options actually exist more optimal.

Blanket for newborn | select the necessary properties

    1. Temperature. Blankets for different temperature conditions can be made from almost any filler. Depending on the thickness, these can be either synthetic fibers or natural ones. As a rule, wool or synthetic fibers are used to produce warm blankets. And in terms of its thermal insulation qualities, modern synthetics are no longer inferior to wool. To produce lightweight summer blankets, cotton and again synthetics can be used.
    2. Hypoallergenic. Synthetic fibers are unsuitable for use as food by bed mites and other living creatures, which is why they have significantly higher hypoallergenic qualities. Therefore, you should not dismiss synthetics when choosing a blanket for a newborn. Manufacturers report high hypoallergenic qualities of cotton, bamboo and camel hair, but I would still advise when choosing a blanket to remember that:
      • natural fibers are an ideal habitat for bed mites, which are the cause of allergies;
      • In the production of any type of filler, an unscrupulous manufacturer may use toxic substances. Most often, such substances are used to soften fibers or as dyes. It is for this reason that you should give preference to proven brands.
    3. Weight and tactility. Depending on the manufacturing technology, blankets made from the same fibers can feel very different to the touch. Some synthetic fibers are not as pleasant to the touch, but a duvet cover solves this problem. At the same time, blankets made from high-quality synthetic fibers are much lighter and softer. Leaders in light weight blankets with synthetic fillers. They are light as a feather and even newborn babies are very comfortable under them!
    4. Easy to care for. When it comes to babies (including newborns), the question of washing often arises. And in this matter, synthetic fibers are again in the lead - they can be washed in a machine and there is no fear that the blanket will shrink or the filling will bunch up. Of course, we are talking about high-quality synthetic fibers.
    5. Hygroscopicity. A very important quality for many is the speed of drying of the blanket! Synthetic fillers are also leaders in this position! Our favorite holophane blanket dries in just 3 hours in a ventilated area at room temperature 22 degrees, in the sun at 30 degrees - about 1.5 hours. At the same time, a classic flannelette blanket needs about 10 hours to dry completely at room temperature 22 degrees. If we are talking about drying a flannel blanket in winter, then the time increases to a day.
    6. Natural materials - These are classic wool and cotton. Cotton is ideal for warm climates. Wool is used when it is necessary to retain heat.
    7. Mixed (natural + synetic). I see no point in diluting the excellent characteristics of synthetic fibers with natural ones. As an exception, I’ll probably point out wool mixture. I just ask you to take into account that half-wool should be chosen in cases where you see a neat texture of the fabric. For example, meet great options wool blend blankets. As for quilts filled with wool blends, I would advise you to avoid them, as there is too much of a chance that they are trying to sell you a pig in a poke.
    8. Breathable properties. It is believed that synthetics do not allow the body to “breathe,” but is this really so? It turns out that everything is almost the opposite! With natural fibers everything works fine until the moment when sweat appears. At the moment of sweating, natural fibers, due to their hygroscopicity, absorb moisture and then stop letting air through. As for synthetics, there are “breathable” and “non-breathable” synthetics. The use of non-breathable synthetics for blankets is unacceptable. The breathable synthetic blanket is ideal even for newborns. When covering with woolen blankets, you should be especially careful to avoid overheating, as the blanket may sweat and lose its breathability.
    9. Synthetic fillings for quilts. Everything is simple here, the larger the budget, the better the quality of the fiber. The concept of quality includes thermal insulation, breathability, softness, hygroscopicity, and resistance to washing. I will list the most popular ones in ascending order of quality: padding polyester, holofiber (analogues slightly different in the processing technology of holofane), Thinsulate, Isosoft. The cheapest and least quality padding polyester on this list. I guess I didn’t buy it for a newborn baby, but all the others are quite appropriate and modern.

Blanket for newborn | We create a set of newborn blankets for all occasions

I will describe our set of blankets and my conclusions regarding each of them:

A wool quilt in the best traditions of our grandmothers. Intended for winter. Afterwards we couldn’t use the blanket with holofan - it was too thick and uncomfortable. After washing, dry for at least 2 days. Each wash significantly takes resources away from its original qualities - deformation occurs and it becomes rougher.

Grandma's wool quilt

A blanket with holofan came with the bedding. Initially, it was unclear when it was best to use it. It has been tested in all conditions and concluded that it is the best as a basic universal blanket, including for newborns - warm, very light, very soft. Dries quickly when washed.

Quilted blanket with holophane filling

A flannelette blanket, just like in childhood. The blanket is of medium thickness. Intended for average temperature with a duvet cover and also for use as a blanket. Compared to Holofan and Velsoft it seems rough and unpleasant. We only use it if the main blanket is in the wash.

modern flannelette blanket comes in a variety of colors

Blanket made of velsoft or fleece.

Over the past few years, fleece blankets have given way to velsoft blankets. Many people are familiar with fleece, but less so with velsoft famous brand fabrics.

Velsoft is currently the most popular fabric from which blankets for babies are made. It is synthetic, but despite this it is a leader in its tactile qualities. Terry, very soft to the touch. Blankets, overalls for cool weather, and terry robes are often made from it.

Velsoft is more gentle and pleasant compared to fleece, but at the same time, Velsoft loses its appearance faster.

Considering that we prefer soft cotton for contact with the skin, velsoft blankets are good for covering a lightly dressed baby. Velsoft washes well and is wrung out in the machine. Dries quickly after washing. Has a wide range of colors.

Blanket for newborn | optimal choice

So, it’s time to return to the issue of creating a set of blankets for a newborn.

The key point in this matter will be:

    • If you are a supporter of diapers, then a set of two blankets and a pair of blankets will be enough for you. You can take blankets of the same thickness, with high-quality artificial filling - in frosty conditions you can cover them with two at a time, and the rest of the time you will have two universal blankets, one of which can be washed at any time. You can take one thicker, but it will spend most of its time in the closet, and this is not very practical. But for blankets, it seems reasonable to me to choose one in summer version, the other in winter. In the summer version, velsoft is ideal for babies, in the winter, thick fleece or wool mixture.
    • If you are an opponent of diapers, then the choice of fiber is definitely synthetic. In terms of quantity, at a minimum, you will need 3 universal blankets and 3 medium-thick blankets + 1 thick winter blanket. Of course, this will not completely cover all the costs of dry blankets, but there will be time for maneuvers.

I hope this publication has convinced you that natural is not always the best and your attitude towards modern synthetic fabrics improved. In the modern world, it is important not to be captured by prejudices and to distinguish between what is actually good and what is a stereotype. In fact, this publication is relevant not only for blankets for newborns, but also for

Sweet dreams to your little ones!

Blanket for a newborn - which one is better to choose?

When collecting a dowry for a baby, parents often ask the question: which blanket is better to choose? Comfortable sleep is very important for the health and development of the baby. Properly selected bedding plays an important role.

Available in stores big choice blankets for babies and I will share my opinion on the selection criteria.

What kind of blanket is there for a newborn?

Basically, I would divide the blankets by composition and size. Blankets are produced in a fabric cover with various fillings or woven blankets, most often flannelette (cotton), wool and wool blend. I'll start with blankets with fabric covers with various fillings.

In addition to the filler, pay attention to the fabric of the cover and the quality of the stitching. The optimal cover fabric option is 100% cotton fabric. Fabric with the addition of synthetics is more durable, but in this case the blanket may “creak” and become electrified.

1. Duvet with down filling. Pros: light and warm, highly breathable. Cons - a high-quality duvet is significantly more expensive than other children's blankets. Down quickly becomes damp, requires constant drying, and is not machine washable. Despite many articles about the hypoallergenic nature of down filling, I believe that natural down can provoke allergic reactions in children. In addition, dust mites often appear in down fillings, which is unacceptable for a small child.

2. Blanket with swan's down filling. “Swan down” is a modern synthetic filler, its properties are similar to natural down, but it has a number of advantages. A blanket with such filling is light, perfectly warming, breathable, and does not cause allergic reactions. The blanket can withstand repeated washings washing machine, dries quickly. Average price.

3. Blanket with synthetic filling The properties are similar to swan's down, but the filler has a more rigid structure and the blanket is less dimensional stable. Inexpensive a warm blanket, which does not require special care.

4. Cotton blanket does not cause allergic reactions, breathes well and retains heat. The downside is that it is heavy, absorbs odors, and eventually forms lumps. Low price.

5.Blanket with cotton filling - essentially also a cotton blanket, but with a better filler texture. Lighter and more shape-resistant than a cotton blanket. Doesn't like frequent washing. Average price.

6. Blanket with bamboo fiber Its properties are similar to a blanket with cotton fibers, but lighter. Breathes perfectly and does not cause allergic reactions. In addition, bamboo is a natural antiseptic, regulates humidity and heat exchange, and eliminates odors, which is very important for a small child. Average price range.

7. Blanket with wool filling has excellent thermoregulation and does not cause overheating. Natural wool contains lanolin, which promotes relaxation. Wool quickly absorbs moisture, but dries quickly. Wool blankets have excellent thermal and hygienic properties, but do not like frequent washing, so I would not recommend them for children under 3 years old.

I don’t recommend woven blankets made of wool or wool blends for babies for the same reason.

Woven cotton blanket or flannelette blanket practical option for a small child. Does not cause allergies, breathes well, is easy to wash and dry quickly, and does not require special care. The flannelette blanket is great for warm rooms and walks.

Fleece blankets and blankets – hypoallergenic, lightweight, perfectly warming, quick-drying. Suitable for walking in a stroller.

What kind of blankets are needed for a newborn?

The minimum requirement for a child is one warm and one thin blanket. For summer, perhaps also a blanket for the stroller. Blankets must be breathable, hypoallergenic, easy to care for, and of high quality.

For a “winter” blanket, I would prefer a blanket with synthetic or bamboo filling. At a relatively low price, they meet all the requirements for blankets for newborns.

I consider it as a “summer” blanket the best option cotton flannelette blanket.

Picking up bed sheets into the crib, you will need not only a blanket and bedding, but also a bumper to the crib to protect the baby from injury and excess light. Nowadays, stores offer a large selection of crib sets with bumpers and bedding. Such sets most often include: a warm blanket with a duvet cover, a pillow with a pillowcase (used from 12 months), a sheet, and a soft side. If you are planning to buy such a set, then the blanket from the set will be a “winter” blanket for your baby. All you need to do is buy a replacement set of 3-piece bedding and a thin blanket.

Correct baby blanket size

When choosing a blanket by size, you need to take into account the size of the duvet cover in the bedding set for the newborn. In Russia, the standard for children's duvet covers is 115x145 cm. Blankets with a size of 110x140 cm or 100x140 cm are suitable for such a duvet cover.

There are blankets of smaller sizes, for example 85x115 or 110x118 cm. Such blankets are convenient for a stroller. You are unlikely to find a duvet cover to go with it.

Here I wrote my own opinion about choosing a blanket for a newborn. I hope you will take my recommendations into account and choose the best blanket for your baby.
