Canopies made from awnings are designed to ennoble the structure, and at the same time make a private house and the surrounding area more functional. There are many options for arranging canopies for verandas, pergolas, and awning porches, the choice of which is regulated by the needs and financial capabilities of the owner of the site.

Meet Her Majesty the Marchioness

The modern concept of “awning” has become much broader than it was a few years ago. That's what they call fabric now retractable structures, as well as frameless vertical partitions that can protect from strong winds and ultraviolet rays. Due to its intended purpose, functionality and aesthetic appearance, such automated canopies are increasingly being used to improve summer cottages.

Awning fabric, price range

For covering the frame of awnings, they are used the following types fabrics:

The fabric used to cover awnings is treated with special impregnations:

  • Teflon coating promotes moisture-repellent properties, protecting the fabric from dirt and fading in the sun. In addition, the material with Teflon impregnation practically does not wrinkle, does not break or stretch;
  • antiseptic agents prevent the formation of fungi and mold on the fabric, thereby making it as durable as possible;
  • UV protective filters are endowed with anti-reflective properties and allow comfortable rest in sunny weather.

Types of awnings

Awnings and awnings for summer cottages have several types, the main difference in which is the retractable mechanism of the structure, their intended purpose and the method of their control.

By purpose There are window (showcase), terrace, balcony (greenhouse), pergola and vertical awnings.

Window. Showcase awning protects the room from direct contact sun rays and can be a vertical external curtain or have a visor in the upper part of the structure, which moves the vertical panel away from window frames. You can regulate the penetration of light into the room using a curtain structure, leaving it completely closed and opening it as needed.
The standard design option for an awning is to place the support brackets at the mid-height of the window opening, at a distance of 10-15 cm from the slopes, so that the awning, in open form protruded from the wall by 60-100 cm.

Baskets are the most common form of window awnings

Terraced awnings due to their size and windage, they have a more rigid frame and are equipped with a load-bearing square beam attached to the wall. The frame of such extended awnings, equipped with bearings, must withstand high torque values and a high degree of bending. Depending on the design of the stand and the materials used, you can create the most grandiose examples of landscape architecture: summer gazebos, rotundas in the middle of lawns and belvederes near flowering flower beds.

Balcony or greenhouse awnings represent two or three sectional structures, which form a “broken” roof with a visor. In the middle of the departure the awning is equipped longitudinal beam, with which you can raise and lower the awning and, accordingly, the canopy itself.

For creating open verandas, summer canopies adjacent to the house, pergolas, patios, rotundas and other mobile options for country architecture, pergola awnings are the most popular. A structure fixed to the wall of a house is usually equipped with two more (or more) supports, which prevents its deformation under the influence of wind load.

Vertical awnings They are folding walls that are often used to fence pergolas and create mobile gazebos.

By type of frame folding, awnings are divided into lever-roll, basket and awnings.

Lever-roll mechanism for retractable awning

Lever-roll the mechanism is equipped with two folding arms, reminiscent of arms, unwinding an awning wound on a special shaft, which rotates to reveal the awning.

Basket mechanism, which is also called dome, is a frame of several support arches, equipped common axis rotation. Arc shapes come in a wide variety of shapes: rectangular, round, oval, of varying heights and lengths. The folding mechanism of such awnings is often called a lace mechanism, since all the arcs are connected by one common cord, which is attached to the lowest of them. By pulling the cord, you can assemble the awning; by untying it, you can lower it a little or completely open the structure.

Marchisolet designed for extended awnings exposed to strong winds. The design of the marciolette consists of two parts: the upper one, on which the awning is lowered vertically and covers the area, and the lower one, which forms a canopy. The ratio of the upper and lower parts of the structure, as well as the reach of the visor itself, can be manually adjusted.

The awning control method can be manual or electric drive, have remote control, equipped with wind and solar intensity sensors.

Rules for caring for the awning

Retractable terrace awnings - convenient and practical

  • it is recommended to “preserve” the structure for the winter in a special case or dismantle the awning with the help of specialists from the Canopy Master company, who, upon removal, will be able to ensure the integrity of the structure;
  • It is recommended to lubricate and adjust all elements of the product at least once a year;
  • It is prohibited to hang any objects on the awning that could cause the structure or its individual part to fall;
  • It is strictly prohibited to disassemble the product yourself, since it is based on powerful springs that can cause serious injury;
  • models not equipped with wind sensors and automatic system coagulation require constant supervision. So, when leaving the terrace, gazebo or area as a whole, you should roll up the awning.

Options for using an awning on a summer cottage, photo

Automated awning system is used in dacha architecture for protection against sun, precipitation and bad weather. Options for using the structure directly depend on the type of awning.

Thus, greenhouse awnings are suitable for equipping greenhouses and winter gardens, balconies, swimming pools and open verandas.

Terrace awnings, depending on their size, can be used as a canopy over a porch, terrace or large open veranda.

They owe their name to the nobility of the same name. So, according to legend, Francisco Borgia used this device to shade the room in which his fair-skinned, beautiful daughter lived. Soon, the comfortable and lightweight awning began to be used not only by marquises and other rich people, but also by merchants, who thus protected their goods from the sun.

Nowadays, buying an awning for a terrace is not difficult. It is much more difficult to choose the right design among the huge assortment. The purpose, types and advantages of awnings will be discussed further.

Purpose of awnings

So, an awning is a canopy created using a lightweight but durable frame made of aluminum and composite alloys, as well as special fabric treated with all kinds of protective impregnations. Such awnings are resistant to environment, they are not afraid of either wind, scorching sun rays, or precipitation.

Due to their strength, as well as the variety of species, awnings have a fairly wide range of uses. They are used as:

    • awnings for summer areas in restaurants and cafes;
    • awnings for trade and advertising pavilions;
    • awnings on boats protecting those sitting from the scorching sun;

protection from rain, sun and prying eyes on balconies and terraces.

The type of construction is also chosen according to the purpose of use, because, say, different requirements are put forward for terrace awnings than for awnings used in boats.

Types of awnings

Based on the type of design, it is customary to distinguish open, closed and semi-closed awnings.

Open

This is the simplest and most affordable design. Such awnings and canopies are used for terraces, retail stalls and summer areas in cafes. But it can be installed only when there is a niche or canopy under which you can hide the open mechanism from external weather influences.

Cassette and half-cassette

The mechanism responsible for opening the fabric is partially or completely closed in such awnings. As a result, they can be used for open air, without worrying that the structure will jam.

According to their form and purpose, awnings are also divided into several groups. Let's take a closer look at each of them.

Pull-out models

Most often, retractable awnings are used in cafes, restaurants and other shopping areas. The popularity of this design lies in the fact that this canopy can cover significant areas when open, and is practically invisible when closed, which is very convenient for summer areas that do not function in cold weather.

In addition, on the material covering the frame, you can place advertisements both for the establishment itself and for sponsors, suppliers, etc. The aesthetics of such models also plays an important role.

Dome or basket awnings

They got their name from the shape of the canopy. They look very original and give the building a special charm. These structures fold without problems, and not only metal, but also plastic can be used as material for the hinges.

Showcase option

Awnings that allow you to adjust the level of lighting. Despite the name, they are used not only in retail stalls, but also on balconies. Thanks to this canopy, interior details do not fade and are not exposed to precipitation.

The material stretched over the frame can be easily replaced if necessary.

Vertical models

Such awnings are, in fact, external curtains. They are created from high-quality breathable fabrics, which allows you to ventilate the room by opening the window itself, but leaving the material down.

Vertical awnings are perfect for terraces: the fabric protects people sitting inside from insect bites, rain, sun and prying eyes, but allows you to enjoy clean air.

You yourself adjust the length of the curtains. Yes, when clear weather they can be lowered to a level sufficient to provide shelter from the sun's rays, and during rain they can be closed completely.

Horizontal awnings

If vertical models are curtains, then horizontal ones are roof. Large awnings allow you to cover a large area, so they are great for spacious terraces and retail outlets. For stability, front supports are added to such structures.

Sectional (pergola) awnings

An excellent option when you need to create a wind-resistant coating. Pergola awnings are stable because they are supported by powerful columns. By connecting several sections, you can get a shelter of the required duration.

Double-sided models

If you need to cover a space that is not adjacent to the wall, use free-standing awnings. To do this, create supports that correspond to the plan of the future tent. Use double-sided models on sports grounds, in the garden, in the yard, etc.

Double-sided awnings over gazebos in the yard are very convenient. The slope of the two parts of the canopy can be either a regular gable or a reverse one

Awning canopies allow you to effectively hide your car from the scorching rays of the sun and precipitation, while they are inexpensive and can be installed without any problems with your own hands. It’s no wonder that awnings are the most popular among summer residents and tourists. Awnings and awnings made of awning fabric do not allow water to pass through, they are light and durable - just right for a car. Let's talk about them in more detail.

Classification of fabric canopies

Carports designed for cars can look different. Experts conditionally distinguish three groups of such awnings for canopies, which differ from each other in appearance quite significantly.

For your information! Canopies made from tent fabric “Tent” and “Garage” are used not only for cars. For a dacha, a fabric canopy can be indispensable, turning into small house or a shed.

Any of the above canopies made of awning fabric can either be purchased or made by yourself. In the first case, you save time and effort, but spend approximately twice as much more money, in the second case, you save money, but bother with making the frame and sewing the roof.

What does it take to make a canopy?

When preparing for the job of making a carport, there are three things you should remember: simple rules. Following these rules will allow you to create a beautiful canopy that you will be proud of.

  1. For the frame and roof of the canopy, select only light and durable materials.
  2. Make the canopy frame collapsible so that it can be easily dismantled and transported from place to place.
  3. Make the canopy fastenings as secure as possible so that they better resist windage in strong winds.

First, let's select everything necessary materials. First, we need an awning. You will have to buy it by the meter at a specialized retail outlet, sheathe it and insert special fastening rings.

Calculate the size of the awning in advance based on the design and expected size of the roof. Standard size roof canopy for a car of the “Marquise” type 3 x 6.2 x 3 meters. For the “Tent” and “Garage” canopies, the roof size will be almost twice as large.

Secondly, we will need materials for the frame, namely strong tubes with a stainless steel coating, jumpers and corners for them, and fasteners to strengthen the structure. Typically, 35 mm steel tubes are taken, made of stainless steel or coated with stainless steel. Corners and jumpers are made from metal rods welded together, in which holes for fastening elements must be drilled in advance. The same holes are drilled in the tubes.

Thirdly, thrust bearings will be required in order to firmly secure the garden canopy on hard or soft ground. For them we will take 6 pieces of reinforcement 40 cm long and six steel rings with a diameter of 40 mm.

Important! In addition to the above materials, we will need steel carabiners for reliable fastening of the tent roof to the frame and steel rings sewn around the perimeter of the tent.

It is very difficult to judge the quantity of materials. Everything will depend on what size the canopy will be, what design it will be, whether it will be adjacent to the building or not, and much more. For example, in the manufacture of a tent canopy for the Marquise dacha, they spent 26.5 meters of 35 mm steel tubes, used a piece of awning 3 x 6.5 x 3 meters, 20 lintels, 6 thrust bearings and 56 fastening elements (in the form of bolts, nuts and washers), 32 carabiners and 32 rings.

Now let's say a few words about tools. During assembly finished design minimum tools required wrench for fastenings and a hammer to drive the bearings into the ground. Making a frame and sewing a roof is another matter; for this you will need:

We assemble the awning structure with our own hands

When all the materials and tools are prepared, you can begin to manufacture and assemble an awning canopy for your summer cottage. By approaching the issue of making a canopy carefully, you have a good chance of creating a strong and well-fitted structure, where every element will be in its place. In this case, it will be quite easy to properly tension and then, if necessary, correctly dismantle the awning along with the frame.

Prepare properly workplace, gather together everything you need and let’s start making the frame of a canopy for a summer house and a car. The procedure is as follows.

  1. We take a grinder and cut metal tubes according to the dimensions that you determined in the drawing for the supports. For example, we will have 6 supports of 1 m 90 cm each.
  2. Next, we cut metal tubes for the longitudinal and transverse crossbars. If there are 6 supports, we will have 4 longitudinal crossbars, consisting of 8 pipe sections of 1.5 meters each, and three transverse beams, each consisting of two sections of 1.5 meters each.
  3. Next we cut the tubes into gable roof. We will need 6 pieces of tube, 1.7 meters each, for the roof and 6 meters of tube, divided into 4 parts for the ridge.
  4. Finishing the work with the angle grinder, we need to cut 12 pieces of pipe, 1.5 meters each, for the base of the canopy in order to provide the structure with the necessary stiffening rib.

Note! At each end of each pipe section, it is necessary to drill two holes, placing them lengthwise, 2 cm from each other. The diameter of the hole should be slightly larger than the diameter of the prepared mounting bolts.

The tented canopy for the dacha is ready. You can disassemble it, load it into a car and take it to the country. When disassembled, our canopy will weigh not much more than 50 kg. Just right for transportation by car.

To summarize, we note that a carport covered with a tent roof is a very simple, lightweight and inexpensive design that anyone can afford. There is no limit to the functionality of such a canopy. It can be used for its intended purpose by covering the car during a trip and living in the country, it can be assembled during tourist trip a large company, creating a collective place for overnight stays and gatherings in bad weather. In general, you can use the collapsible structure as your imagination dictates, as long as it’s useful!
