This finishing material is divided into types according to texture, theme, visual depth of the picture and material for production. Different types Photo wallpapers have different characteristics and gluing technology. The following material is used for manufacturing:

  • vinyl;
  • paper;
  • fabric;
  • non-woven

Photo wallpaper also can be done in one or two layers. Two-layer types are called "duplex", single-layer varieties are called "simplex". Double-layer wallpaper is made with a lining layer, which plays an important role in application to the wall.

They are also divided into self-adhesive type and glue-on type. The first option on the inside of the coating already contains an adhesive base, which is covered with a protective film.

All you have to do is remove the plastic and get to work.

Types of materials used for manufacturing

To make a purchase, you should know about the material on which the photo wallpaper was made. All options have different different characteristics.

Paper photo wallpaper

This type of wallpaper is not in great demand due to the fact that they are difficult to paste, and also have low moisture resistance qualities and there is a risk of fire. They buy them only because paper photo wallpapers are not expensive, otherwise they are inferior to modern materials in all characteristics.

This finishing material has only one layer, applied in a standard way for paper glue. Their thickness varies, so the gluing time can vary in the range of 3-10 minutes.

It may happen that a copious amount of glue was applied to the paper photo wallpaper, in which case it may get wet and fall apart right on your hands. But if the surface is coated with too little glue, they may not stick to the wall.

Provided that all application rules are followed, the finishing material will show through all the defects that are on the wall. They are not worth buying, because after a while you will have to buy wallpaper again to re-glue it; it is better to overpay a little for quality. The only plus is that it is a budget option.

Non-woven photo wallpaper

This is one of the most popular options for photo wallpaper. The price of the finishing material is quite affordable, and the gluing technology does not require professional skills. Non-woven fabric consists of cellulose fibers, the material is light weight, and there are absolutely no woven elements in it.

The inside of non-woven photo wallpaper is paper-like. The front side can be subjected to wet wiping, which means that this type of wallpaper is allowed for wallpapering a kitchen room. But their mechanical qualities are not high, they must be handled carefully so as not to damage the coating.

Such photo wallpapers can be partially non-woven, with the addition of high-quality paper, and completely consisting of non-woven material. The first option has front side some relief for decoration, and in the second case, an imitation of plastered walls is created. The material is environmentally friendly; it can be used to cover the bedroom, living room and kitchen. Positive properties of non-woven photo wallpaper:

  1. When gluing wallpaper, you cannot apply glue to the material; it is enough to coat the surface of the wall. For these purposes, special glue for canvas is sold. This technique will reduce the time it takes to coat the fabric; experienced specialists recommend this non-woven material due to its ease of gluing.
  2. Another advantage is its repeated use. The canvas is quite easy to remove and re-stick in another room.
  3. If the house shrinks, the wallpaper will maintain its integrity from tearing; on the contrary, it will keep microcracks from expanding.
  4. The wallpaper fits easily and does not have bulges, which often appear on paper photo wallpapers. The material is highly elastic.

Non-woven photo wallpapers quite effectively hide various minor flaws on the wall, for example, depressions and cracks.

Textile photo wallpaper

These photo wallpapers have been used for many centuries. But in view modern design they have improved a little. Tapestries are considered the progenitor fabric wallpaper, they were fixed to the walls, and used as images flower arrangements and landscapes.

Textile wallpaper is quite expensive. They are made from natural materials, from silk, linen and other fabrics. The production of textile photo wallpapers is based on PVC, non-woven fabric and paper. The gluing technique is also different, the thickness and material depend on this. Textile wallpapers have such positive properties:

  1. Gluing is quite simple; the finishing material is light in weight and has a soft structure.
  2. Paper textile photo wallpaper is applied to the wall using glue, which is intended for paper type wallpaper
  3. Self-adhesive sheets are also available. To do this, just prepare the surface of the walls and treat them with a primer, remove the film and get to work.
  4. They have excellent properties for masking defects on walls.
  5. The standard option is single-layer textile fabrics; gluing is done using liquid glue. After some time, the material begins to dry quickly.

The glue used is the same one that is used to glue vinyl photo wallpapers.

These wallpapers are very popular and look great on the walls, but their structure is very dense, so gluing them will pose some difficulties.

Vinyl consists of styrene and rubber, obtained through a copolymerization process, so vinyl photo wallpaper is a synthetic material.

The surface is foamed and smooth. The second option is also called satin.

Important features of this wallpaper:

  1. Before gluing the canvas, glue is applied for 5-10 minutes. During impregnation it should be applied to the surface of the walls. glue solution, only where they will stick. Next, the canvas is attached to the wall and smoothed using a herringbone pattern - rubber spatula it is necessary to perform smoothing actions. It is necessary to achieve complete elimination of air bubbles. Finally, leveling is done using a roller. Pasting is done end-to-end.
  2. There are self-adhesive vinyl photo wallpapers. Gluing them does not require serious preparation. It is enough to prepare the wall surface to perfect condition. It is necessary to work with such material very quickly and carefully, because they cannot be re-glued; when applied, you need to get exactly into the work area, otherwise a defect will form.

Vinyl sheets are expensive, so the material requires careful handling during the gluing process.

A small plastic bucket is perfect for mixing glue; water is added there and, while mixing, use a mixer dry glue is poured. Stir until smooth.

The solution should not contain debris or small stones. The ratio of water and glue is determined according to the instructions for the selected type of adhesive mixture. It must be stirred periodically so that it does not begin to thicken.

Wall marking

This stage of work must be done before mixing the glue. It is necessary to achieve the exact location of the canvases. The main guide lines must be straight; if skewed, a defect will result in the form of curvature of the glued photo wallpaper.

Initially the size of the canvas is taken and transferred to the wall, from edge to edge. The lines are drawn using a pencil and a building level, and evenness is maintained vertically and horizontally. You should get rectangular shapes on the walls.

The process of gluing canvases to the wall

Depending on the type of wallpaper, the glue is applied either to the canvas itself or to the wall; sometimes, it is applied simultaneously to the wall and the canvas. It is not recommended to coat the material with a large amount of glue; it is advisable to process one piece so that the material does not overexpose in the glue. Where to start gluing photo wallpaper?

So, you bought photo wallpaper to create in the room cozy corner. Before choosing, we determined their size and location on the wall. Surface preparation includes the following steps:

  • leveling the wall with plaster;
  • sealing holes and cracks if alignment is not performed;
  • priming the surface with a deep penetration primer.

  2. Attach a ruler and draw a wallpaper knife along it. Remove waste material. Use a spatula, and areas where the wallpaper cannot be removed can be blotted with a wet sponge or sprayed with a spray bottle.
  3. In the cleaned area, repair holes and dents, if necessary. IN in this case Leveling with a layer of plaster is not done to avoid a sharp difference in sections of the wall.

Do I need to wash the whitewash?

If the wall is painted or whitewashed, it must also be cleaned, since photo wallpaper cannot be glued to paint. They may come off and the work will have to be redone. The same applies to whitewashing. If the wall is treated with lime or chalk, the whitewash must be washed off with a brush, sponge and warm water. It is better to work in protective clothing, glasses, and rubber gloves.

Making the markings

Photo wallpapers are always accompanied by a diagram of the arrangement of sheets on the wall. It is important to follow it exactly; this will allow you to correctly glue the most complex pattern. Markings are made on the wall to indicate the location of each sheet. It is important to place them strictly vertically and horizontally so that the design is not distorted. To do this, markings are made using a plumb line and a building level. Draw better with a simple pencil, and not with a marker, ink or gel pen.

Types of photo wallpaper and choice of glue

Work begins with the first sheet, then take the 2nd, 3rd, etc. according to the manufacturer’s numbering. The brand of glue must match the type of material chosen. For example, if it is paper, choose glue marked “For paper wallpaper" or "For all wallpaper types."

The construction market offers following types photo wallpaper:

  • paper (glossy or matte);
  • fabric (special glue is included in the kit or you need to buy glue for the textile base);
  • vinyl with imitation of various textures: sand, plaster, bark, dust, leather, fresco, frost, painting, weaving, linen.

Rules for gluing photo wallpapers

It is important to properly glue each sheet at the stage of pressing it against the wall. Here it is better to take a pressure roller, since you need to paste the photo wallpaper so that it does not stretch even a few millimeters along the edges. Otherwise, this will lead to displacement of the joints and distortion of the pattern. It is better to use a roller with soft rubber, this is exactly the type of coat that is designed for pressing surfaces.

The gluing rules are similar to working with standard wallpaper. Only the order changes: work starts from the upper left corner and continues to glue the first horizontal row. Then move to the 2nd row, starting from the left side. It should be noted that photo wallpaper can be hung correctly from any angle. The main thing is to first finish one horizontal row, then start another.

Additionally, the joining seams should be coated. To do this, it is better to take a thin brush so as not to stain the adjacent canvas with glue. Many craftsmen use PVA glue for joints. It should be noted that after drying it gives a yellowish tint, and it is most noticeable on a white background. Any excess glue should be removed with a soft, dry cloth. Just as when gluing regular wallpaper, you need to eliminate the draft in the room until the wall is completely dry.

Is it possible to glue photo wallpaper onto other wallpaper?

Let us immediately note that the option of gluing new photo wallpaper onto old wallpaper exists, although this operation requires compliance with the following number of factors:

  • The textured ornament of the old coating should not have a thickness of more than 0.2-0.3 mm;
  • Photo wallpaper must have simplest option pasting;
  • Their density should be from 200 g/m2 or more;
  • The old base must have a moisture-repellent coating and not have obvious defects.

The structural drawing requires special attention. Provided that its depth differs from the parameters stated above, you should refuse to paste it - there is a high probability that the pattern will appear through the wallpaper glued on top.

Remember that photo wallpapers with a solid pattern or halftones are unlikely to be able to completely hide the pattern underneath. Preference should be given to options with non-contrast small prints. Canvases with forests, thick grass, lots of lights, a busy metropolis or an orchard look great.

If there is a need to glue photo wallpaper onto non-woven wallpaper, you should take into account their density - it should correspond as closely as possible to paper. Great value has also the quality of the glue - its Not right choice can ruin all your efforts.

If there is a discrepancy between the parameters of the old and new wallpaper, it is better not to stick it. In this situation, you need to be patient and first get rid of the old coating.

Step-by-step gluing guide

How to choose glue?

To hang photo wallpaper on the wall correctly, you should take into account the type of rolls purchased and it is advisable to read the instructions that come with them. As a rule, a special adhesive composition, successfully combining with each other chemical characteristics glue and coating on the reverse side of photo wallpaper.

So, there are several types of glue designed for:

  • thick wallpaper (consisting of fabric fibers, textiles, vinyl and photo wallpaper in a consistent texture);
  • light material (paper).

If the ratio of the components of the composition is violated and the cooking process changes in living conditions, a decrease in the adhesion and adhesiveness of the mass is possible, which can lead to rapid peeling of the wallpaper or a complete inability to stick the material to the wall surface.

Preparing the wall

It is correct to glue wallpaper on a wall that has already been cleared of the old layer of finishing. But it happens that individual pieces of wallpaper are very difficult to separate from the wall, and blurring doesn’t really help either. In this case, you can consider the option of placing photo wallpaper on top of pasted wallpaper, but only if they do not have pronounced depressions, roughness, or a three-dimensional pattern that form obvious unevenness on the wall. It is prohibited to fix vinyl photo wallpapers made on non-woven fabric. You can buy it in the store special compounds, which will soften the old finish and allow you to get rid of its remnants with an ordinary household sponge.

In general, the preparation technology wall structure comes down to the following manipulations:

  1. Cleaning of the wall is carried out until the bare foundation appears. In the process, wide and narrow spatulas, rags and a scraper will be useful.
  2. Remove dust with a coarse bristle brush.
  3. Prepare an acrylic primer mixture with high level adhesion to concrete, the preparation method is indicated on the packaging of the building material. Thoroughly, trying to level it out as much as possible.
  4. Prime uneven areas, holes and seams with oil.
  5. Wait at least 6 hours for the room to dry. It will help to understand whether the wall is dry or not cunning trick, used by craftsmen - fix and separate a small piece of tape; if there are wet spots on the tape, postpone subsequent manipulations with the wall until tomorrow.
  6. Walk over the surface with sandpaper or mesh with fine abrasive. Now you can start marking.

How to make markup?

In order for the design left on the canvas to fit well into the interior, it is necessary to accurately measure the horizontal and vertical positions of its placement. The marking is done as follows:

  1. Decide on the size of the material that is indicated on the trim label. Place a starting point A at the top left, from which the photo wallpaper should then be drawn along the entire wall.
  2. Attach building level and draw a dotted horizontal line where the top side of the canvas will go.
  3. From point A, mark a vertical dotted line downwards for the wallpaper sizing boundary. Do not press the pencil too hard; the line should be barely noticeable.

Accurate markings required

Now unfold the canvas and lay out the sheets, guided by their serial numbers. Take a wide fan in your hand paint brush, take a sufficient amount of glue and apply it to the wrong side of the layer. Fix the upper left corner of the sheet to point A and carefully lay the rest of it, focusing on the lines you made.

Clumps of glue will probably appear on the surface of the material, which can be removed by running a hard rubber roller from the center of the sheet to the edges. As soon as excess glue goes beyond the wallpaper, remove it with a flannel cloth (synthetics do not absorb the adhesive).

Cover the underside of the second sheet with glue and place it on the right side of the first, following the horizontal and vertical rows. Provide an overlap of 7–10 mm between the panels and secure the second sheet with a roller. By applying a metal meter and using stationery knife, trim the dotted line applied by the manufacturer on the photo wallpaper.

Carry out these manipulations with all the other sheets that form a single composition. If the edges and corners are not fixed tightly enough to the wall, additionally coat with PVA.

There may be a noticeable smell of glue in the room, be patient, open windows and doors, of course, help the glue dry quickly, but it is unlikely to be able to glue the surfaces together. In order for the glue to dry completely, it is usually enough to wait 24 hours.

If the wallpaper is very dense

If the production of photo wallpaper uses the embossing method or is based on embroidery decorative elements, gluing photo wallpaper begins with unrolling the roll and laying out the sheets on a flat plane, after which it is advisable to fix the panels with something heavy. Leave the material for 12 hours and only then begin the process.

Apply glue to the sheet and spread it on the underside. Fold the sheet in half and set aside for 2-3 minutes, during which time the adhesive composition will saturate the entire material. It is preferable to use a roller with velor covering medium rough.

Conclusion

Now you know how to glue photo wallpaper correctly so that the whole picture is pleasing to the eye and matches the overall style of the room. When choosing wallpaper in a store, be sure to ask the seller to expand the image, because a small picture has different colors and cannot boast of relief, which in real size may turn out to be too pretentious.

Such a presence effect is possible only if such wallpaper is glued correctly, otherwise there will be uneven joints, distortions, air bubbles, folds will ruin the whole impression. We suggest you figure out how to glue photo wallpaper without mistakes.

Pasting photo wallpaper on a wall with your own hands is a simple procedure, but it requires extreme care and attention.

Features and nuances of gluing different types of photo wallpapers

Based on the material used, wallpaper can be divided into several types, and the process of gluing each of them to the wall has its own nuances.

Paper

Paper photo wallpapers can be one- or two-layer. Due to their increased strength, the latter are quite easy to work with, but single-layer paper canvases are very capricious during the process of unfolding and gluing, they tear easily and form folds. We work with them very carefully.

Soaking time adhesive mass paper wallpaper with a photograph – 3–7 minutes. If you overdo it, there is a risk that the canvas will get wet. The thinnest single-layer wallpaper must be attached to the surface immediately after coating it with glue, otherwise it will tear.

After drying, all defects in the surface of the base will be visible through such photo wallpaper, so it must be prepared as carefully as possible. But paper webs are undemanding when it comes to glue.

Vinyl medium density photo wallpaper

Such canvases have a smooth or foamed coating and are resistant to moisture and abrasion.

The composition of the glue and the method of applying it to the wall are selected based on the base of the photo wallpaper - non-woven or paper.

  • When choosing a paper-based material, glue is applied to the wall and to the canvas 5–10 minutes before gluing.
  • When working with non-woven wallpaper, the adhesive composition is applied only to the wall. For better adhesion, you can coat the edges of the canvas from the wrong side.

Non-woven photo wallpaper

One of the most common options with an attractive appearance and affordable cost. The reverse side of such products is similar to paper, the front covering is easy to clean, so they are suitable for kitchens. Abrasion resistant and mechanical damage, in their texture most often imitate plaster.

When gluing non-woven wallpaper, the adhesive composition is applied not to the canvas, but directly to the base.

Non-woven wallpaper glued to the wall has the property of holding the surface together; when shrinking a new house, they will prevent cracking of the plaster.

Fabric photo wallpaper

The densest type of material made from natural textile fibers (linen, silk, cotton). Gluing requires a certain skill, so as not to spoil an expensive product, it is better to seek help from specialists.

Canvas with 3D effect

Let us separately highlight 3D photo wallpapers, which help to visually expand the space and create the effect of presence. This coating is especially appropriate in small rooms. They are usually glued over the entire surface of the wall, which allows you to achieve the desired result. To create such wallpapers, a non-woven base is used, so they are easy to care for and durable.

Before gluing, the surface must be carefully prepared: leveled and treated with a primer. The connections of the strips should be made extremely carefully so as not to disrupt the integrity of the pattern.

What do you need to hang photo wallpaper?

Tools and materials for gluing photo canvas:

  • The wallpaper itself. Before ordering them, carefully measure the wall, decide on the location, size, and theme of the drawing. A rash choice can lead to additional costs for purchasing new material.
  • Adhesive composition. Selected based on the type of wallpaper purchased. Before purchasing, check with a sales consultant in a specialized store to make the right choice. Pay attention to its color so that the glued pattern is not spoiled by visible stains of the adhesive composition.
  • Stationery knife. It will help to smooth out uneven surfaces and trim protruding ends of the wallpaper.
  • Several brushes. Use small brushes to glue the joints, large brushes to apply the composition to the main part of the canvas.
  • A simple pencil. Necessary for marking on wallpaper and on the wall.
  • Level. Helps identify correct proportions vertical and horizontal lines.
  • Ruler. Used to draw boundaries between parts of a drawing.
  • Pure matter. It will come in handy if the adhesive composition goes beyond the edges of the pasted photo wallpaper.
  • Rubber roller. With it in your hands, you need to walk over the pasted wallpaper, correctly distributing it over the surface of the wall, expelling air bubbles.

The process of gluing wallpaper with a photo image

The rules for gluing photo wallpaper are usually indicated on the packaging. However, in case the instructions offered by the manufacturer are not clear, we offer a step-by-step lesson:

  • We decide on the wall where the wallpaper will be attached.

Note! Non-woven and vinyl canvases will hide minor imperfections in the base surface.

  • We carefully prepare the selected wall, clean it of the previous finish, remove all cracks, chips and large irregularities. To make the design more bright, paint the base with white water-based paint.

Important! The room temperature before, after and during wall pasting should be maintained at 25 °C.

  • We carefully inspect the purchased photo wallpaper to make sure that all parts of the picture match and correspond to the stated dimensions.
  • We mark the wall in advance, marking on it the future location of each of the fragments.

It is customary to start marking from the part of the image that will be closest to the window.

  • We apply adhesive to the back of each fragment. Leave the strips for some time to soak (on average 10 minutes is enough). If non-woven wallpaper or vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis is glued, the glue is applied to the surface of the wall.
  • According to the markings made in advance, we paste the canvas fragments.
  • Smooth out the applied pattern using a rubber roller.

  • When gluing with an overlap, carefully remove the excess parts.
  • We cut out “windows” for sockets.
  • When specified in the instructions, we apply a protective composition.

If some aspects of the above process are still unclear, watch the following video tutorial:
