From year to year computer games are becoming increasingly popular. Despite this, in the CIS countries it is difficult to find an educational institution whose program includes a special course dedicated to creating games. In the process of studying a specialty related to information technology, from individual subjects you can glean the basic knowledge necessary to develop simple games. A person who wants to seriously engage in computer development must constantly engage in self-development, look for additional sources of knowledge, study them carefully, and then bring his ideas to life.

What does a developer do:

Game development is divided into 4 stages. The first stage is preparation for production. At this time, the game concept and character design are developed, a game prototype is created, and funds are selected to implement the project.

The second and key stage of creating a game is production. The developers begin to implement the previously approved plan, correcting errors and shortcomings.

The third stage - the release of the game, occurs after the game has been debugged and tested.

The final stage is support. Quite often, bugs in PC games are found after release. In this case, it is necessary to create patches that will help correct the mistakes. The developer takes part in all stages of game creation.

Who is involved in the development process

Developers are required not only when creating games, but also when creating websites, blogs, and forums. This labor-intensive processes and a whole team of professionals is working on their implementation: programmers-developers, musicians, artists, testers.

Primary requirements:

As already said, we do not have educational institutions who train game developers. Often companies are ready to hire a person with basic knowledge and train him on their own. The main requirements are:

  • basic programming skills (PHP+MySQL, Ajax, C#);
  • significant gaming experience;
  • ability to draw by hand;
  • knowledge of English;
  • experience in fashion design;
  • knowledge of the laws of constructing gameplay and game worlds.

It is difficult to accurately estimate the level of income of a developer. It depends on the complexity and budget of each specific project. Size wages ranges from $300 to $2,000 per month.

The gaming industry is not the most widespread in the CIS countries and finding work in this area can be quite difficult. Our website publishes the latest vacancies from various, including foreign, companies, not only in the development field, but also in other popular IT areas: business analytics, IT management and others.

About the desire to change my “favorite” job in the field of business IT consulting for a creative and welcoming game development.

Well. It's no secret, but yes. I would like. And I even want to. And I even tried to do it. Alas (or hurray?) - it didn’t work out. And now I’ll tell you how and why.

Note Advice and experience are suitable for positions like game designer, producer or PM. Artists have their own methodology for writing a resume and preparing a portfolio.

Introduction

In August of this year, I decided to change the warm place of a leading consultant in a company for... the position of a rogue game designer, junior producer or community manager in a gaming company from small to large here in St. Petersburg.

Thanks to my knowledge of resume writing, I sketched it out in a couple of hours, created myself an industry profile on Linked In and... no, I didn’t start sending it out left and right. I just began to wait. I only sent him to Blizzard for the position of Test Analyst (Russian), just, so to speak, to see how quickly they would shave me.

In my work experience, I did not have a single finished game. The following episodes of my life were recorded:

  • Development of Dune: Raiders of Arrakis
  • Quite a varied experience at WCR
  • Constant hangouts, sometimes with some indicas, sometimes with others
  • Several small Unity projects that were not put into production.

Two finalists in competitions directly or indirectly related to games, and my willingness to develop quickly and do my job conscientiously.

In total, about 10-12 companies responded to all this. Some I refused almost immediately (for various reasons), some I went for interviews with (I’ll tell you more about this later). Using the technique of the movie Nymphomaniac, we will maintain anonymity by giving the offices alphabetic abbreviations.

P

Because the first one. The company responded almost immediately on Linked In. Their profile is remote work. They have a large number of vacancies and they are all in different parts Russian Federation and Eastern Europe. HR outlined the vacancy and issued a test task. But this was not game design, but level design (does it really look like drawing mountains, grass, stones?). For Match-3.

For those who don't know, Match-3 = Casual game.

Educational program

A game intended for a wide range of users. Casual games are different simple rules and do not require special perseverance from the user, time spent on training or any special skills; they are relatively cheap to develop and distribute. Many similar games also have bright, attractive graphics and a minimum of text. Casual games are opposed to hardcore games with complex rules, designed for a relatively narrow audience of experienced players who are willing to devote a lot of time to mastering the game.

They had their own development environment (ne Unity), their own graphical level editor, for which they provided a test task and detailed documentation. We had to come up with 10 levels according to certain criteria. 10 levels in the game about crystals, little things, candies and other attributes of ABCs. And then my first umm... conflict with myself happened.

Yes, I wanted to get into the gaming industry. Yes, I imagined it differently. But here's the dilemma. Is it worth going to develop casual games if you dream of World of Warcraft and all sorts of Neverwinter Night. The decision did not come to my mind immediately, but only the next day - remembering the words of Galenkin, the approximate content of which was: If you love the Shooter genre, don't go develop a farm. Look for a project that is as close as possible to the genre that is so beloved by your soul.

So, I refused this task.
And I continued to wait for offers...

Indie studio "L"

These guys reached me through Linked In. Literally right out of the gate, the recruiter (who also happens to be an IT director) admitted that he really liked Galenkin’s podcast and the person (a moment of elevation of ChSV), who so correctly and competently formulates thoughts can easily set tasks for his specialist colleagues.

The office turned out to be a real indie studio and, my God. From the first step I really liked it there. The atmosphere of reasonable democracy, the bearded faces of the developers, the game design girl - everything is according to the canon of the genre. No stern faces, no false pathos ( like, we're pros, we made a farm for 1000 rubles) jackets, ties. Everything is relaxed and to the point.

The guys needed a person for three positions:

  • Game designer (game store balance)
  • Level designer (from concept to implementation)
  • Producer (process management)

A big feature of the guys was the fact that none of the interviewers really knew anything about game design or level design.

So, the first iteration for me was just the IT director. He started challenging me in mathematics. No, dear schoolchildren, not multiplication/addition/subtraction. Complete statistics, probability theory and math ( mathematical analysis). Being an excellent student at a university in these disciplines, it would seem that I should have cracked the questions posed like nuts, but no. The program for 2-3 courses flew out of my head like the names of all former women. Having difficulty remembering what a factorial is and answering several questions, I took a break, citing the fact that I had forgotten everything and needed time to recover.

The second iteration was a person who did 3D design. He quizzed me about game difficulty charts, level design concepts, and other intricacies of working with the game world.

Educational program in case of an interview

Effective difficulty in a game requires a wave-like increasing pattern. This is necessary so that the player does not get overwhelmed by the ever-increasing complexity, but has time to relax a little, so that later he can ascend to a new peak with renewed vigor.

If you haven't played WoW, it's better to hide the cut to avoid the YANNP state.

Analyze current games and you will understand that in many places this same wave-like model is implemented. For example, in World of Warcraft, the artifact ap system is tied to the concepts artifact power points And artifact knowledge. The first, similar to experience, is used to increase the levels of the gun, the second increases the gain (bonus) of points for each item of power used. The number of points for ap level increases progressively, while knowledge decreases required amount items for apa.It turns out that after studying knowledge you get increased points until the next level increases the cap so much that it requires much more work from you. After that, you wait for a new level of knowledge to reduce the difficulty of obtaining a new level and off we go.

Right at the interview, I was given the task of coming up with an asymmetrical map for Shutan, implementing destructibility there and coming up with a justification for why I consider this map balanced. It was a success.

After this torment, the guys let me play their arcade joker. The first impression is that the art is very good. The second is hard difficulty. It was a shooter-runner, and its main feature was the concentration of scoring events per screen pixel traveled. Main character runs forward, something constantly explodes in front of him, shoots, falls through. To be honest, my ass was very burnt with such complexity and I almost immediately asked the question: “What exactly is your audience?”To which I received the answer: “Well, we did it so that we ourselves would be ok.”The game was full of hardcore throughout all the levels, and the only thing that didn’t repel the little ones was the fact that you couldn’t die in the first level. Later I even found a YouTuber who tried to make a Let's Play for the game and... suffered a lot: D

In general and in particular, we had positive impressions of each other. It remained to complete two test tasks - on level design from scratch and, in fact, on balancing calculations.

I failed miserably at calculating the balance. I needed a few days to restore basic knowledge of math and statistics, moreover, I had to apply them to the game mathematical model. I simply didn’t have enough time to solve everything correctly. -1 points in favor of Jusper.

According to the level design, it was necessary to formulate a concept and sketch out a diagram of an asymmetrical map for a joker, with a maximum setup of 5x5. The concept is lying around somewhere at home, here is a summary of our interaction (in short: 0 points in favor of Jusper).

Attention, opinion real person, MULTIPLE BOOKS!

Well, I won’t argue, maybe someone considers tenths to be the most obvious presentation, but we would still like to see more delicate work with a scale, a map that would be more able to reveal the potential of the map structure and individual solutions. The map layout remains uninformative. Therefore, it is not possible to fully perceive the information that we would like to convey. Observance of proportions and scales, and a more detailed explanation would be of great help with this. concrete solutions by level design. Additional diagrams and drawings of these solutions. Color coding of different structural elements is possible. In general, there is a structural hierarchy that would be supported by a visual hierarchy.

The fact is that the issue of misunderstanding may be aggravated on our side. Within our team, everyone can freely express their position. This is a huge plus, but it also imposes its own limitations and nuances. One of these nuances is to substantiate your position on the proposal or question expressed and support your reasoning with logical conclusions. This provision practically eliminates the possibility of pushing through any decisions with the weight of one’s word, and therefore we are looking for a person who could fit into such an approach, a person who we could agree on having contradictions, and, accordingly, a person who could convey the light of his truth to us who suffer. This is the kind of guy we are looking for. It seems to us that we could find mutual language, because you suit us in many of the qualities stated above.

You are sociable, you know how to talk, the concept of logic is not alien to you, you offer interesting solutions and we don't say NO, but we simply cannot say YES and be 100% sure of the correctness of our decision.

Total score Jusper vs Kontor L = -1
And I flew by with a bang.

What did this teach me? Prepare more thoroughly for social security. Study all the basic information. And do not take on tasks that are not core.

The chief designer of the game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft produced by Blizzard Entertainment, Ben Broad, wrote a note on his blog about how to get a job as a game designer at a gaming company.

My own path into game design was not a conventional one. However, there are many reasons why people want my advice, so I claim some authority. So when you get a job as a game designer, write me an email to let me know I was helpful to you.

Play video games

“What an original statement,” you say. But seriously, play really a lot - as in modern games, and into timeless classics. Let it be Plants vs Zombies, Chrono Trigger, Frog Fractions. But above all, choose the products of the companies you want to work for.

Recruiting departments often ask what games the applicant currently plays and which ones he considers his “favorites.” Managers typically want to better understand the candidate and ensure that he will fit easily into their internal culture. If you throw in a boring non-gamer, he will turn the dream team into a soulless and boring bunch.

Don't be a big fan

Despite the desire to be on a team of amazing nerds, most teams probably don't want to be around someone who is drooling over their presence and who also furiously tweets every time their co-workers go to the bathroom. So only solemn admiration is acceptable!

Be reasonable

Intelligent people are much rarer than you think. But there is no end to the “superminds,” especially those who think that they can be anyone. You have no idea how many people think that they can come up to me, say they want to work on my team, and I have to pretend that “Oh yeah, yeah, this is the same person, so let him get the job.” and another medal to boot.”

Accept any job in the gaming industry

If you have never worked in this field, accept a job in customer support or quality control in entry-level positions. It's complicated and often interesting job, and next to the same interesting geeks as yourself.

This is a great place to get to know the culture of the company you're interested in and establish yourself as a "smart guy" within it. If you are just looking for a job in such departments, you are even more fortunate. I myself was once an analyst in the quality control department and loved this work.

Find a way to stand out

If you have a thirty-second video of a dance in your cover letter demonstrating your game level design skills, I'll be more likely to invite you for an interview (although you don't have to do that anymore, I just came up with it myself, so have something ready other).

Be a techie or an artist

It's clear that you're not the only one who wants this job. Become better than others. Learn to draw 3D models and gain programming skills. Programming is what gives you a great competitive advantage.

Don't neglect luck

This is one of the most important and most frustrating factors. You can't achieve anything without luck. The fact that you are alive and can afford video games already means that you are luckier than the majority of people on this planet.

Here's a surprising secret: hard workers are luckier. Sometimes, when a development team is thinking about opening a new position, they may add Photoshop knowledge to the list of requirements simply because they know one suitable girl in the quality department with Photoshop knowledge.

Thus, it allows you to describe the vacancy more accurately, knowing that there are already candidates - the girl fits these narrow requirements and is more likely to get the job because she forged her own luck.

In 2002, when I was working at a software company, I became friends with someone there who later left the company and got a job as a night QA employee at Blizzard, working on the game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. He knew that I started working at a pizzeria and asked me to place an order with us, and I delivered the pizza.

This allowed me to meet some people on the team, convince them of my adequacy, and get a temporary job as a game tester. Just imagine how lucky I was: I lived minutes from the Blizzard office and met the right people at the right time.

It was all a happy coincidence except for those moments where I had to personally show people what I was capable of. Take advantage of such moments, and the number of such opportunities will increase.
