Every man has encountered the connection between a hose and a water pipe or tap. This is usually a simple procedure: fit the hose tightly onto the pipe and turn on the water. But such a connection often leaks water, and the hose itself sometimes falls off. Then it comes to our aid wire clamp who is able to help out in a difficult situation.

First of all, I would like to clearly define the concepts: what can actually be called clamps. So, this is a ring-shaped device, usually made of light metal alloys. It has a tightening mechanism in the form of a special nut, mainly with a worm thread, and also, depending on the models, a metric thread is used on the nut. In our case, the base of the device has a kind of wire base, but is made of quite durable metal, which does not deform when tightened.

IN modern version the tightening element is just the nut with metric thread, when twisted, the mechanism tightly fits the surface, while thoroughly clamping it onto the working base. The scope of application of clamps is quite wide, but the range of action is designed to create a hermetic connection of hoses, rubber pipes with solid bases, pipes. Using a clamp, you can tightly connect the water pipeline with a rubber hose and not be afraid that there may be a leak somewhere.

Even the corrugated exhaust pipe is attached to the chimney using a clamp and does not allow combustion products to enter the room.

Initially, such a device was created not for domestic needs, but for the automotive industry. Clamps are an important element in the engine of almost any car. Ask why? The fact is that the engine of the machine during operation, due to vibration, is in a moving state, and various connections, fuel and oil supply are different pipes. It is the rubber pipes that have free movement and vibrate evenly along with the engine, while fulfilling their duties of supplying fuel. Well, they are attached to a metal base with clamps; they are able to provide a reliable, airtight, and most importantly, durable connection important nodes engine.

Among such fastenings, I would especially like to highlight one type of product: spring wire clamps, which work on the principle of clothespins; such fastenings fully correspond to their specifics. This technology allows them to be installed for their intended purpose without using additional tool. The design of such a device is a thickened elastic wire, and it is quite rigid, which allows it to maintain a given diameter. There are two “ears” at the edges, which act as “clothespins”.

In order to install such a clamp at the place of use, it is enough to squeeze the “ears” with your fingers, and the diameter of the clamp will increase, after which it can be put on the pipe. That's the whole process of installing such a universal clamp. It is possible that skeptics may doubt that such a simple device can create a tight, airtight connection. But we can assure you that the connection is quite strong and reliable, these arguments directly confirm the laws of physics. The thing is that such devices are designed for use in places with temperature changes.

In a normal environment, the fastening mechanism exerts its operating pressure on the connection; when heated, the metal begins to expand, thereby enhancing the clamping property several times. This device has a small by-effect, usually over time, such a clamp tends to pinch the rubber hose, rendering it unusable. It is not recommended to use such fasteners in a car engine, or you can use it with subsequent replacement.

It’s good when the household has such a fastening element. Of course, such a thing is not necessary every day, but there are times when you simply cannot do without a clamp, especially for car owners. But if you constantly forget to buy such a part for your kit, let's figure out together how to make a wire clamp with a minimum set of tools and materials.

To do this, we need the wire itself, which should be soft enough, but at the same time quite strong. The most useful tools are a screwdriver and a screwdriver, which can be found in almost any home. Now let's take a step-by-step look at the whole process, which, as you guessed, if there are a minimum of elements, it will be quite simple.

How to make a wire clamp - step by step diagram

Step 1: Measure the required wire length

First of all, let's cut off as many wires as the diameter of our connection requires. Measuring instruments we don’t need it, just wrap the edge of the wire around the pipe and estimate the ends for twisting by eye, usually 50-60 millimeters is enough. Then fold the wire in half and use pliers to bite off the excess. We bring the ends together so that they are on the same level.

Step 2: Correct clamp arrangement

Now that you have a wire bent in half in your hands, you need to make the correct “eye” at the bend, and the diameter of the “ear” should coincide with the screwdriver, which should fit freely into it. To maintain this size, just straighten the ends, insert a screwdriver between them and bring them together again. Of course, it is best suited for such purposes; it is even along its entire length and does not have an expansion, unlike a flat one. Next, you need to bend the resulting “ear” to the side, relative to the length of the wire, it will serve as a lock.

Step 3: Detailed installation of a homemade clamp

You’ve just made a wire clamp with your own hands, it’s okay if it looks unsightly, the main thing is that it performs its functions efficiently. All that remains is to install it in its place of honor and twist it tightly. To do this, bend it around the pipe, always in the form in which it is, namely twice, and cross the ends together. Then we insert a screwdriver into the “ear”, hook the other end and turn it clockwise several times until a tight connection appears. Remember that when clamping you should not be too zealous, you should feel when to stop so that the wire does not break. If the ends of the newly installed clamp are too long, we recommend cutting them off with wire cutters.

It is possible that the first time you will not be able to install a wire clamp made by yourself, perhaps you will not get the twist, or you will overtighten it, but do not despair, repeat the procedure for making the fastener again. We are confident that after several attempts you will get a high-quality and tight connection, and this simple technology will always help you out in difficult times. Patience and a little effort! But still, for the future, keep several clamps of different diameters in your household, they will definitely come in handy!

Connecting and extending hoses

Hoses are very common and are often used in private sectors, especially in summer cottages and vegetable gardens in summer periods(organization of water supply, hose irrigation of various vegetation, etc.). They are much easier and more convenient than pipes. If desired, the hose can be cut, as well as extended, they are easy to carry, hose alignment does not require virtually any skills and expensive devices. There are several solutions according to which high-quality hose alignment can be performed: folk remedies, time-tested, and appeared in Lately plastic connectors. Modern solutions made of plastic (tees, adapters, crosses and other connectors) are offered by many manufacturers; solutions are available for literally any occasion. Such devices allow you to quickly and efficiently connect hoses; they can be used both indoors and in the garden. They are great for connecting any type of product for frequent switching between water points.

Do-it-yourself methods for connecting hoses

If you do not want to buy modern plastic devices for joining products, you can use one of the proven folk ways: through an inexpensive adapter, through a piece of pipe and through a fitting (if the hose is connected to a pipe).

Today, hose fittings for any pipe and any hose are available for sale, and they are quite cheap.

For polypropylene pipes You can use similar solutions with external threads by screwing into the fitting. The only point that you need to pay attention to is the thickness and length of the fitting. You can grab the hose using special clamp, you can use wire twist. There is absolutely no difference in the quality of the connection, but the cost is reduced several times when compared with factory-made plastic connectors.

It's common practice when garden plot or there are many different hoses lying around in the garden. Pieces of products can be connected using a piece of pipe of a suitable size and used on the farm. This is done very simply: hoses are put on a length of about 10 cm on both sides and grabbed, as mentioned earlier, with wire or clamps.

The adapter-connector, like the pipe mentioned in the previous example, connects both pieces of the hose, only it has special notches at the ends that make the process of joining the hose easier and more convenient if the diameters of the connections do not quite fit each other.

You can make your own hose connector from a coupling and polypropylene pieces. When assembled, such a homemade connector looks quite good and holds the hoses at ¾ length. A tee for connecting hoses can be made in a similar way. The closest store-bought analogue is a coupling (products are clamped using a union nut and petals on both sides).

For a high-quality and reliable connection of hoses, prepare necessary tools and materials, namely:

  • pipe cutters;
  • Workbench;
  • couplings;
  • adapters;
  • nuts;
  • clamps;
  • wire;
  • spanners.

High pressure hose connection

The service life of metal hoses depends mainly on the quality of the hose connection high pressure. Among other things, it is very important to choose the right couplings, fittings and other connecting elements of the structure. All elements must comply with the performance characteristics and technical parameters metal hoses

On modern market presented very a large assortment products used to connect high-pressure hoses to operating machinery and equipment. Offers from foreign and domestic manufacturers are available.

Basically, different connections differ from each other in the type of fitting (size or type of thread, method of sealing), as well as in the connection methods. Today, the most common type of end connection is the clamp type. This design one-piece with a hose and is characterized by increased strength. Such a hose can only be disconnected by sawing the clamping sleeve, which, in turn, eliminates further use fitting.

According to the design features, there are 3 main types of connecting end connections.

Thus, a connection of 2 elements consists of a sleeve and a separate fitting. During assembly, the fitting is inserted into the hose and then put on clamping sleeve. This type connections are most often used in Russia and the countries of the European Union. This is due, first of all, to the fact that the same sleeve design can be used for various types of fittings.

The integral type of connection consists of one piece. In this design, the clamping sleeve and fitting are a single unit. When using this connection option, warehouse costs increase significantly, but the likelihood of making a mistake when choosing a clamping sleeve is noticeably reduced.

And the third type is a twist joint. It includes a clamping sleeve and a separate threaded fitting. During assembly, the sleeve is screwed onto the hose, after which the fitting is simultaneously screwed into the hose and the sleeve. With this type of connection, clamp fittings and bushings can be reused multiple times, but at the same time this type connections are slightly more expensive than others.

DIY instructions for connecting hoses

To connect products with your own hands, you will need a certain set of tools, as mentioned earlier. In most cases, you can do without a workbench, but it is much more convenient and faster. For plastic nuts you will need a gas wrench and fum tape. For polypropylene, special pipe cutters are required.

The hose is connected to the water source. This could be, for example, a collector. The ¾ hose is attached with a clamp directly to a section of pipe welded to the manifold. There is no need to install an extra valve so as not to increase the weight of the structure. The second end of the hose can be led to the steel pipe about 20 m (can be changed to propylene, but taking into account the protection of pipes from rodents, it turns out to be very expensive). A tee-splitter with 2 mini-valves is put on the end of the pipe. It is connected to it on one side via a ¾ connector and an adapter. The second valve is a backup valve.

If the pipe at the other end does not have a thread, you can use a special ½ adapter and a connector with a rubber end. With the rest of the outlets, the hoses are connected according to a similar principle.

Now you can connect any hose with a connector here and distribute it around the area through tees, if there is a need to organize a multi-hose irrigation system. Huge advantage connector in front of clamp connections in that it becomes possible to easily connect and disconnect connection nodes and replace tips.

Intermediate hoses are installed between watering tips (sprinklers, pistols, etc.) and connectors. When purchasing ready-made factory kits, you need to pay attention to the cross-section of which hose the supplied connectors are designed for.

Filling a large bucket with water from the kitchen sink can be problematic: if it completely takes up the sink, it will become very heavy once it is filled. You can use the hose outside, but you can only dial it cold water. You can fill a bucket of water in the bathtub, but you will still have to pull the bucket out of the bathtub. But there is a simple solution: simply connect your garden hose to your kitchen faucet and fill a bucket with water! Just a couple of twists and turns, which can be done quickly and easily. We'll show you how to do this in a reliable way!

Hose connection

Take the faucet attachment. This is a small attachment that screws onto the faucet and connects the end of the faucet to a threaded garden hose fitting.

Take the faucet nozzle

Unscrewing the tap head

Be careful not to drop the parts that are inside the faucet head. It's a good idea to lay a towel in the sink to catch anything that might fall into it; the towel will prevent parts from getting into the sink drain.

Screwing on a new faucet attachment

Make sure it is screwed tightly to the faucet; there is no need to use tools to screw it tightly.

If the vacuum valve does not connect to your plumbing system, Screw the hose type vacuum valve onto the hose threads before you connect the garden hose. Vacuum valve hose type can be found at a hardware store. This will prevent it from entering and spreading chemical substances or Wastewater into the water supply with drinking water if the hose accidentally remains (drowns) in a container with cleaning or chemical reagents or falls into contaminated water that is not suitable for drinking.

Make sure the hose collar is in place. The hose has a rubber or vinyl seal that prevents leakage. Make sure the cuff is in the hose before connecting the hose to the faucet or you will cause a flood.

Screwing the hose

The hose is screwed to the faucet nozzle. Make sure it is screwed on tightly enough so that the nozzle acts as a watertight seal.

Unscrewing the faucet nozzle

Unscrewing the tap head after using the hose. Unscrew the hose and faucet nozzle, then screw the faucet head back tightly so that it acts as a watertight seal.

Check for water leaks. The faucet may leak from a reinstalled faucet head if it is not screwed on as tightly as it was originally screwed on.

To prevent or stop faucet head leakage, first remove the faucet head, then make one or two turns of Teflon tape around the faucet threads in a clockwise direction.

Pull the tape tightly around the faucet threads, being careful not to allow excess tape to protrude where the water flows from the faucet, as the tape may obstruct the flow of water.

Screw the faucet head over the Teflon tape. Excess tape may be visible, but this is not a problem.

Screw the faucet head over the Teflon tape

Trim off excess tape

Carefully cut off the excess tape with a knife and clean off any remaining tape.

Perhaps I will tell you obvious things that have long been known to everyone, but for me personally it was a pleasant discovery. It turns out there is a technology that makes it easier to work with watering hoses in the country. Previously, when necessary, we simply pulled a 3/4″ rubber hose onto a 1/2″ bend and used it. Yes, sometimes the water leaked out, sometimes the hose was thrown off, but we didn’t know any other way. The hose was spliced with a 1/2″ barrel. Long-term connections were tightened with a clamp.

But while walking around OBI, I noticed interesting gizmos, namely hose connectors. They allow you to quickly connect hoses, connect various devices in one movement, and just as quickly disassemble everything back. Moreover, on one shelf there were branded gardena connectors with a wild price of about 230 rubles per piece. And next to it, which is not typical for OBI, are inexpensive and high-quality (!) Chinese plastic GardenCraft connectors. At a very reasonable price of 15-30 rubles per connector element.

Hose attachments are available for hoses of different diameters. There is a bushing (in the middle) to connect the hoses to each other. There are different devices for mounting on a faucet, but in my case a simple 1/2″ plastic fitting is sufficient.

To attach it to the hose, simply cut it straight, put on the connector and tighten the nut by hand, it will evenly crimp the hose. There are options for a connector with a valve (“aquastop”), which will prevent water from flowing out of the free end of the hose if no nozzle is inserted into it. But the price for the valve will be an even greater narrowing of the lumen to the flow of water.

Two hoses are joined through an insert:

The connectors are put on the fitting with a click and fixed on it. To remove the connector, you need to pull off the orange ring.

On tap:

A huge number of attachments are available - sprinklers, mechanical watering time relays, watering cans, nozzles, tees, valves.

Bright color allows you to quickly find the end of the hose in the grass. The strength is sufficient not to break if accidentally stepped on. Let's see how they survive the winter.

Everything comes together and disassembles very quickly:

The rubber ring prevents the connection from leaking. Over time, as it wears, of course water will ooze out a little, but not significantly.

UPD. Chinese connectors work well at pressures of 1-1.5 atm. at high pressures they begin to ooze. To connect the pressure washer to the water supply at work, we bought hozelock connectors with a metal fitting. Pressure 8 atm. withstands without leakage
