Many experts call liquid wallpaper for the ceiling an ideal finishing material. It allows you to create beautiful seamless surfaces that delight the eye with their impeccable appearance.

Ceiling surfaces in residential areas can be finished using various materials. Considerable popularity in Lately They use liquid wallpaper; they look very attractive on the ceiling. Yes, and purely practical point From a perspective, such a coating has many advantages, it:

  • is antistatic (liquid wallpaper does not attract dust and does not accumulate static electricity) and non-flammable;
  • has no seams;
  • belongs to the group of environmentally friendly materials;
  • does not absorb foreign odors;
  • has excellent adhesion to the ceiling base;
  • not afraid of moisture;
  • ideal for decorating curved and wavy ceilings;
  • easy to clean with a rag soaked in water, and also cleaned with a vacuum cleaner with a soft nozzle;
  • can be restored without problems (if any part of the surface is damaged during the use of the wallpaper, you can always replace it using new material);
  • allows you to mask small imperfections (cracks, unevenness) of the ceiling;
  • characterized by a high rate of heat and sound insulation (due to the fibrous structure of the material);
  • does not lose its original appearance under the influence sun rays(does not burn out).

Ceiling, finished liquid wallpaper

A huge variety of shades and textures allows you to choose liquid wallpaper for any ceiling, organically fitting it into the overall decorating style of a particular room. It is also important that the decorative cladding material in question House master, who does not have special skills, is quite capable of applying it to the surface on his own. To do this, it is enough to understand some of the features of such a procedure, and then immediately get down to business.

The disadvantage of liquid wallpaper is that it high cost. But considering long term operation of such products, this disadvantage can be ignored. In addition, it is necessary to remember one more feature of the described finishing material. According to its characteristics, as we noted, it is moisture resistant. But under no circumstances should you wash it with water.

The finishing material we are interested in is made in the form of a dry mixture. It usually includes the following components:

  • cellulose, cotton natural fibers;
  • wood impurities;
  • mineral particles;
  • silk;
  • natural dyes;
  • decorative additives (glitters, sticks, flocks);
  • seaweed;
  • harmless glue.

Preparation of the composition for application

Liquid wallpaper for ceiling surfaces is usually divided into several types. The first includes mixtures consisting of silk fibers. This finishing material has high price and truly ideal aesthetic characteristics. Silk liquid ceilings are not afraid of ultraviolet radiation. They allow you to create exclusive interiors, striking in their originality. More affordable are combined wallpaper(silk-cellulose).

The price of such finishing mixtures depends on the percentage of cellulose and silk threads in them. The more silk there is in a product, the more expensive it is.

Wallpaper of the third type - cellulose, is considered the most budget-friendly. They are recommended for finishing glazed balconies, hallways, corridors. In bedrooms and living rooms, such cladding may not look the most in the best possible way. When choosing liquid plaster for ceilings, you must take into account geometric features rooms in which it will be used, and also take into account the decorative style of the entire room. Light wallpapers are classified as universal. In principle, they can be used in any premises. And here dark wallpaper It is undesirable to use in small rooms and low height rooms.

Before applying the wallpaper in question to the ceiling, you should take care of preparing it for finishing, as well as understand the technology for preparing liquid plaster. You need to remove all bulky objects from the room and cover the floors with any dense material or plastic film. After this, clean the ceiling surface. If it has been whitewashed, wash the ceiling with water. Old wallpaper can be easily removed with a spatula. With painted ceilings, everything is generally simple - just clean off the flaking areas of acrylic, oil or.

Preparing the ceiling for liquid wallpaper

Next, you need to fill large gaps and cracks in the ceiling with putty. Wait for the applied compound to set, and then carefully smooth it out with a float. If there are fasteners on the ceiling surface, the old plaster mesh, others hardware, paint over them with enamel or remove them. Then you should apply a primer to the base treated as described above. This procedure is easily performed with a wide brush or.

While the primer composition sets and dries, you can begin to obtain ready-to-use wallpaper from the dry mixture. All rules for performing this procedure are available in the liquid plaster manufacturer’s instructions. In most cases, the operation is performed as follows:

  1. Pour clean water (not cold, but not hot) into a 10-liter container (see the required volume of liquid on the mixture packaging).
  2. Pour the dry composition into the water and mix (as thoroughly as possible). Mix liquid plaster only by hand. Using construction mixer or a similar device, there is a high risk of damage to the elements that make up the wallpaper.
  3. Wait until the adhesive components included in the mixture swell well (read the instructions).
  4. Mix the resulting composition, add (if necessary) texturizing impurities and pigments to it.

Liquid wallpaper is ready for use. They should be applied immediately. If the composition dries out, it can theoretically be re-diluted with water. But the quality of such plaster will be low. Its performance indicators will deteriorate significantly. And it will be very difficult for the wallpaper to adhere to the ceiling. If the plaster turns out to be too thick, add a small amount of water to the prepared composition and stir it. There is one caveat here. You cannot add more than 800–1000 g of liquid to one serving of the composition. If adding water in the specified volumes does not correct the situation (the solution remains excessively thick), you will have to wait until excess moisture will not evaporate on its own.

Finishing activities are carried out in rooms with a temperature within +20–26 °C. Application of liquid wallpaper to the ceiling is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Take a small part of the mixture with your hands and form a lump out of it. The latter must be put on a plastic grater.
  2. Apply the plaster to the surface to be decorated using a back-and-forth motion.
  3. Form the next lump. Apply it to the ceiling. Don't forget to periodically moisten the plastic grater with water. Then surface treatment will be much easier.
  4. Smooth out all the lumps on the ceiling.
  5. Leave the surface treated with liquid decorative plaster to dry for about three days.

Application liquid ceiling spray

To speed up drying, it is allowed to use heaters and ventilate the room. The coating described in the article is not afraid of drafts! Many home craftsmen are interested in whether it is possible to apply liquid wallpaper to ceiling surfaces in rooms with high, constant humidity. Experts say it is possible. But with one condition. Be sure to treat the wallpaper with a good waterproof varnish. It should be noted that it does not need to be used for rooms with normal level humidity.

And one last thing. Finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper is sometimes done not manually, but using a spray gun (spray gun). Such a tool must have a capacity of at least 200 l/min and a pressure of about 3.5 atmospheres. The possibility of applying liquid plaster using a sprayer is specified separately by the manufacturer of the decorative composition. Carefully read the instructions for the wallpaper. Wherein decorative compositions with a fibrous coarse structure are never applied with a spray gun. Remember this.

Today there is huge selection finishing materials that are suitable for application to ceilings. Among them, liquid wallpaper that recently appeared on the market should be highlighted.

In this article we will try to understand how to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling and find out their properties and qualities.

Let's immediately list the advantages of such ceilings:

  1. This material is not like all others used in finishing works. First of all, it is distinguished by absolute naturalness, due to which the material does not emit toxic gases when dried.
  2. They also do not absorb dust and have antistatic properties. This is due, first of all, to the absence of synthetic fillers.
  3. Liquid wallpaper applied to the ceiling is a good sound insulator. In an apartment this is not unimportant. The microporous structure allows the coating to conduct steam - “breathe”.
  4. Also, this material is not capricious, it is easy to care for.

Types of ceiling liquid wallpaper

Despite the apparent diversity, liquid wallpaper for the ceiling is divided into three types:

  • Silk.
  • Cellulose.
  • Silk-cellulose.

Silk liquid wallpaper

They are made entirely of silk fiber. Thanks to this they have high stability to ultraviolet. They have high decorative qualities. A ceiling made of liquid wallpaper of this type will remain in its original form for a long time. They do not fade or change color. Their main disadvantage is their high price.

Cellulose liquid wallpaper

The filler is cellulose fiber. The least durable ones. They fade quite quickly in the sun. Decorative properties are at a low level. Therefore, a ceiling made of liquid wallpaper of this type will feel best in hallways and bathrooms.

The cost is the lowest.

Cellulose-silk liquid wallpaper

This is a compromise between price and quality. Consist of a mixture of silk fibers and cellulose. They are resistant to ultraviolet radiation. Unlike cellulose wallpaper, they do not lose their original appearance so quickly. These liquid wallpaper ceilings are perfect for children's rooms and bedrooms.

To apply liquid ceiling wallpaper, we will need:

  • Putty knife.
  • Primer.
  • Various rollers.
  • Hard brush.
  • Drill with stirring attachment.

Technology for covering ceilings with liquid wallpaper

Before describing the technological features, let's compare classic and liquid wallpapers.

Paper wallpaper: The application technology seems simple at first glance. However, they require painstaking marking of rolls, joining of patterns, and careful cutting.

Liquid wallpaper: the technology of application to the ceiling is free from the above-mentioned disadvantages. They are quite easy to apply; some skills will only be required when creating panels.

This type of finishing materials perfectly masks various small irregularities and cracks of the surface to which they are applied, but, like all finishing materials, they require careful preparation.

The technology itself consists of three main stages:

  1. Preparatory stage.
  2. Breeding liquid wallpaper.
  3. Application to the ceiling.

Preparatory stage

  1. First of all, you should remove the old ceiling finish. The set of materials required for this depends on the type of old coating. For example, old oil paint or the enamel can be removed using a special remover. Water-based or acrylic coatings there is no need to completely remove it. It is enough to remove loose and peeling areas with a spatula or a metal brush.
  2. It is also necessary to fill all large cracks.
  3. Only after this is applied liquid primer. It will ensure high adhesion between the ceiling material and finishing coat. This completes the preparation of the ceiling for liquid wallpaper.

Tip: if your ceiling has significant unevenness, then it makes sense to level it with drywall. This is much cheaper and easier than stretching out the plane with a thick layer of plaster.

We gain knowledge on how to apply liquid wallpaper - video: panels on the ceiling, drawings on the walls.

Breeding liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpapers on the market come in several different types:

  1. The last type of liquid wallpaper is also supplied dry. However, they require the separate addition of mineral dyes and texture additives. Wallpaper is completely ready for use. They are supplied in plastic buckets, in the form of a paste and already tinted.
  2. Dry liquid wallpaper. It is a dry bulk mixture. Before application, they are mixed with water according to the instructions. As a rule, they already contain mineral dyes and various texture fillers.

  1. The last type of liquid wallpaper is also supplied dry. However, they require the separate addition of mineral dyes and texture additives.

Let's start diluting liquid wallpaper:

  1. Let's take it plastic container suitable size and pour water into it. The proportions are observed as indicated on the packaging by the manufacturer. Next, the mixture is thoroughly stirred. After which it is left for 12 hours for further swelling.
  2. After 12 hours, the mixture is stirred again and another 0.5-1 liter of water is added to it.

Ceiling covering

Finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper can be done in two ways:

  • Manual.
  • Mechanized.

Let's look at each of them in more detail:

  1. At manual way, liquid wallpaper on the ceiling, applied with a textured roller, spatula or stiff brush. The thickness of the applied layer is 3-5 mm. When applied with a spatula, we get smooth surface. Texture can be added five hours after application using a structural roller. It must be thoroughly moistened with water. In addition, liquid wallpaper can be immediately applied with a structural roller, thereby simplifying your work.
  2. Mechanized application is carried out using a spray gun. This will significantly speed up the work. Apply the required texture using a roller.
  3. The final stage will be drying. In most cases it lasts 48 hours. During this time, the coating must not be subjected to mechanical stress.

Many readers will probably be interested in the question: is it possible to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling in bathrooms?

The answer to this question is clear: yes, it is possible, but it is necessary to protect them from exposure to water with acrylic varnish. It is applied in three layers, drying between layers is 1-2 hours.

Remember: liquid wallpaper cannot be cheap. And high-quality liquid wallpaper will please the eye for many years.

The topic of today's article is liquid wallpaper on the ceiling, live photos in the interior, as well as a description of the material and instructions for applying it yourself.

What is liquid wallpaper made of?

Some believe that liquid wallpaper is plaster, just of a rather non-standard appearance. In fact, this is almost true, but this “plaster” does not contain the main component – sand.

Liquid wallpaper is a mixture of binders, adhesives and plasticizers (mainly cellulose) and decorative filler, mainly natural origin. For example: silk fibers, glitter powder, mica particles, and dyes.

In dry form it is ordinary mortar, which must be diluted with water until the required consistency is obtained. Then the mixture is applied to the walls using a spatula. Almost anyone can cope with this, since, unlike natural plaster, this fibrous mixture is more pliable and less capricious.

The result is a coating that feels like fabric wallpaper, has a structure, but is completely devoid of seams.

What types of liquid wallpaper are there?

There are two main types: professional mixtures and amateur ones. The first ones are without dye, but they are much more affordable. But the master needs to know exactly how much paint to add to the mixture.

The second option is completely ready for use, has a specified color. That is, just add water.

In addition to this division, liquid wallpaper differs in the types of main filler:

  • Cotton
  • Cellulose
  • Blend of silk and cellulose

That is, than more natural material, the more expensive these coatings are. Silk ones are the most expensive, but they are worth spending money on. It's pretty durable coating and the cotton version loses a lot to it.

Cellulose mixed with silk - Alternative option, is more affordable, has all the advantages of natural fillers, but is not a completely natural substance. However, this option is no worse and can also be considered an environmentally friendly solution.

What are the advantages of liquid wallpaper for the ceiling over paper wallpaper?

Liquid wallpaper has many advantages over conventional coatings, such as wallpaper and simple putty.

Firstly, they look much more interesting, and secondly, finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper is possible on any plane, even convex. They are very suitable for multi-tiered ceilings and places with corners that are very difficult to trim with paper without getting bends, distortions and other defects.

The coating looks solid, cast and completely smooth.

But these are all only external advantages. There are also practical ones.

But that's not all. Liquid wallpaper good from an environmental point of view. They are hypoallergenic and suitable for people who have reactions to chemicals and dust.

What can you say about the cons? Yes, they don’t exist; in fact, it’s difficult to come up with something. The only thing is that the colors are very much for everyone. But, if you are satisfied with just such effects, then don’t look for shortcomings, there are none.

With a lot of creaking, the disadvantages include a long hardening time, about two days. But... What's the difference? What's the hurry?

Options for using liquid wallpaper on the ceiling

Now, let's move on to the practical part and see how you can use this material on the ceiling. The scope for imagination here is simply unlimited. Not only can you play with the difference in textures, you can also make drawings with them! Look at this photo, this is how it looks in the interior.

The rose is made from one type of mixture, and the background is made from another. And most importantly, almost everyone can do it all with their own hands.

It also looks interesting when liquid wallpaper is combined with a smooth, painted surface. Let's say you can decorate the box around the perimeter of the room smooth, but make the inside textured.

It looks no worse than suspended ceiling! And what’s good is that the application technology is simple, but the appearance is very solid. The main thing here is to choose the color well.

You don’t have to mix textures, but create contrasts only with liquid wallpaper.

I would like to note that it would be very nice to duplicate the volumetric texture of the ceiling somewhere on the walls. For example, decorate columns or arches with liquid wallpaper. Then the ceiling will look very organic.

Technology of applying liquid wallpaper step by step

You already know what liquid wallpaper is and what it looks like. Now let's look at how exactly to use them and where to start finishing.

1. The ceiling needs to be prepared. There is no need to heavily smooth the surface of the putty, but the level must be leveled as well as possible. Although, it must be admitted that the colorful and variegated colors of liquid wallpaper visually even out minor defects.

2. Buy a primer and go over the ceiling. This is a mandatory step that cannot be avoided. If you do not use a primer mixture, then the putty particles will not allow the liquid wallpaper to adhere well to the surface.

You can dilute the primer, or you can apply it directly to pure form. It all depends on the volume of your ceiling. If one container is enough for the entire surface, then you don’t have to dilute it, but if not, then it’s better to dilute it with water in order to save money.

But here, again, everything depends on the initial layer of putty. If he is fat then better soil Do not dilute, because otherwise there will be a slight absorption.

Do not use Ceresit ST17 primer, as it produces a slight yellow tint that may appear on a colored background.

3. Place liquid wallpaper as written in the instructions. In general, in principle, it is better not to rely on the instructions, but to add water gradually stirring. The consistency should be approximately the same as thick plaster.

An important point: first pour the dry mixture into the container, and then add water. Once the mixture reaches the desired consistency, add a little more and set aside to swell for 15-20 minutes.

4. Take large spatula, made of plexiglass or stainless steel. Apply the mixture onto it with a second spatula. Then treat the surface of the ceiling, being sure not to press too hard.
The layer should not be excessively thin, let it be voluminous and at least 2 mm thick.

5. Try to immediately avoid unevenness between the new portion of liquid wallpaper and the previously applied mixture. Smooth out these places immediately, do not leave them for later.

6. When you completely cover the ceiling, look critically and find differences and shortcomings. The mixture will still be quite plastic, so it needs to be leveled right away.

7. Leave the ceiling to dry for approximately 48 hours. It is advisable not to create drafts, because this can cause cracking of the surface.

That's all the technology is. As you can see, it is elementary, but the design of the ceiling at the exit is very original.

In conclusion, we can say one thing: the material is good, the reviews online are positive, so take it boldly and act!

Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling is no longer news. Consumers have realized the advantages of this finishing material, so they are increasingly using it in interior design. In addition, liquid wallpaper is easy to apply; making the ceiling beautiful with your own hands is not a problem. And if we talk about applying it to walls or ceilings, then there is practically no difference. It is simply recommended to bring the ceiling surface to the maximum level of evenness.

Why? It's all about the lamps installed on the ceiling. The light rays are directed at the surface at a low angle, so all its flaws in the interior of the ceiling will be clearly visible. This is especially true for bulges. And if the unevenness of the walls is allowed up to 3 mm, then the ceiling must be very smooth. Therefore, although applying liquid ones is simple, you will have to tinker with the surface in terms of its preparation.

Ceiling preparation

Start off preparatory stage it is necessary to identify all defects. And if a suspended or tension structure, then you will have to get rid of it. What else needs to be done.

  • Remove all bulges with a spatula.
  • Expand (widen) cracks.
  • Clean the ceiling surface from dust.
  • If there are smudges, clean them up sandpaper. It would be optimal to deepen these areas, that is, remove part of the material.

And now here's the most important stage- this is to treat the surface with a primer deep penetration. This mixture strengthens the surface by penetrating into the material, where it polymerizes. The outer layer of the ceiling becomes durable and does not crumble or crack.

Now you can proceed to leveling operations. For this it can be used gypsum plaster or putty. Plaster is usually used if the surface has a sufficiently large difference. Putty if the difference is insignificant. In this finishing operation the most important thing is to apply the solution to the surface correctly. Doing it yourself is not always easy, especially creating an even layer on the surface in one horizontal plane. therefore, experts recommend applying putty or plaster several times thin layers. Last layer should be the thinnest, as they say, finishing.

Attention! Plaster or putty is applied only to a dry surface, so each layer must be dried naturally.

So, the ceiling is leveled; now it must be treated with a primer. And the last thing is to apply white paint, preferably water-based paint. At this point we can assume that the preparation of the ceiling for liquid wallpaper is complete.

Preparing a plasterboard suspended structure

Often, in order not to bother with a large amount of dirty work, the ceiling is finished with plasterboard. Moreover, it is possible to build multi-tiered structures, thereby making changes to the interior of the room.

Preparing a plasterboard ceiling is not as difficult as a regular one concrete ceiling. This is already an almost leveled surface, which has its own flaws - these are sheet joints and places where screws are installed. These are the ones that need to be puttied. Putty is applied to the joints, followed by a special fastening tape. After which another layer of putty is applied. The screw caps are simply covered with leveling compound. But leveling the ceiling does not end there. It is necessary to cover its entire surface with a thin layer of putty.

Is it primed? plasterboard ceiling? Necessarily. This applies to both the gypsum board sheets themselves and the putty layer. After which decorative silk plaster is applied, that is, finishing is done with liquid wallpaper.

Last stages of preparation

So, before applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, all that remains is to do a few small efforts. If any patterns or drawings will be placed on the surface, then it is necessary to draw a sketch or mark the boundaries.

Often different materials are used in the interior of the ceiling, so it is worth strictly marking their boundaries. Typically, chalk is used for these purposes, and construction tape is installed over the applied line. Decorative silk plaster must not be allowed to fall on the adjacent surface.

If you decide to do it on the ceiling complex figure, then for these purposes you need to cut out a template from thick paper. It is installed at the place where liquid wallpaper will be applied, where it is secured with double-sided tape. As soon as the operations on decorating areas of the ceiling that are not intended for finishing with liquid wallpaper are completed, the template is removed and open area Decorative silk plaster is applied.

How to prepare liquid wallpaper

The method of preparing this finishing material is quite simple. To do this, you will need a clean container (bucket, basin) into which the material itself is poured. After which water is added to it. The serving ratio is six liters of clean water per kilogram of material. Now you begin to squeeze the mixture with your own hands, stir it until a homogeneous mass is obtained (see photo and video). After which the almost finished silk mixture is placed back into plastic bag(in a container), where the silk plaster should, as they say, mature, that is, be completely saturated with water and swell.

And a few more tips:

  • You cannot use any tools to mix the mixture with water; everything is done by hand.
  • If the wallpaper comes with decorative additives, then first pour water into the container, then add the additives, where they mix well. And only then the cellulose material is laid.
  • Worth purchasing decorative plaster more, despite manufacturers' recommendations (one kilogram per five square meters). The thing is that it is much more difficult to work upstairs under the ceiling, and it will be simply impossible to maintain an accuracy of 2-3 mm in the thickness of the applied layer. And there is a high probability that at the beginning of applying decorative plaster, peeling of the material will appear, which will lead to overuse.

Application process

Applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling requires only two tools: a grater (two types) and a wide metal spatula. The first is the actual application and distribution of the material over the surface, the second is the final alignment(see photo and video).

Decorative silk plaster is applied in a small volume, which is distributed over the ceiling area with a grater. In this case, it is necessary to carry out circular and chaotic movements. This is done for one purpose - to distribute cellulose fibers into different directions. This will give the interior of the ceiling a more beautiful structure.

Then you take a plastic grater into your hands; it is made specifically for applying liquid wallpaper, with the help of which the finish is brought to a thickness of 2-3 mm (see video). And now it remains fine finishing where a wide spatula is used. Its working edge is pre-moistened in water and passed along almost finished ceiling. In principle, this can be said to be the end of the process of finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper. It is better if you check the evenness of the surface again. Therefore, it is worth climbing right up to the ceiling and looking at it from an acute angle. This is how you can identify big differences, which can be removed by running a wet spatula over the surface.

And some useful tips:

  • There is no need to hold a ceiling covered with liquid wallpaper to dry under any unique conditions. Decorative silk plaster is not afraid of drafts, high humidity and temperature changes. So such a ceiling will dry out in any case.
  • Remaining material should not be thrown away. They can be dried, put back in a plastic bag and placed in a dark, secluded place. Suddenly there will be a need to use it, for example, if some area has become dirty or damaged from mechanical impact. You just need to moisten this area and remove the applied plaster, after which the residue is mixed with water and applied using exactly the same technology as the main mass.

Can liquid wallpaper be applied to the ceiling? Decorative silk plaster, which is liquid wallpaper, is an excellent material for finishing room surfaces. After whitewashing this is the most economical way ceiling coverings.

In this case, it is possible to obtain an even smooth plane no seams. The resulting surface seems to be draped with expensive silk fabrics. This article will tell you how to glue liquid wallpaper to the ceiling.

The material includes:

  • Natural cotton.
  • The dye is synthetic.
  • Fibers.
  • Cellulose.
  • Silk.

The last two components help liquid wallpaper acquire greater elasticity.

The advantages of the material are:

  • Not subject to rotting– contain antifungal inclusions, which allows their use in the bathroom and toilet, in rooms where high humidity air.
  • Antistatic properties– dust does not accumulate on them.
  • When gluing wallpaper, no adjustment of the pattern is required, due to the lack of joints. After application, liquid wallpaper becomes a continuous canvas, which allows you to hide small differences, pits and cracks.
  • When applying such material, no need specialized knowledge , a person who has nothing to do with apartment renovation will do an excellent job with this task.
  • After the material has completely dried, the ceiling can be painted in any color..
  • Before applying liquid wallpaper with your own hands, no preparatory operations are required.. They are applied to existing putty or paint, and will adhere to them excellently.

Tip: The whitewash on the ceiling should be washed off. And remove large differences on the surface with putty (see How to putty a ceiling with your own hands correctly) and re-prime.

  • Liquid wallpaper is very easy to dismantle.

The disadvantages of the material include:

In appearance, liquid wallpaper is more reminiscent of a silk bedspread and with ordinary glass, non-woven and paper wallpapers it will not look aesthetically pleasing.

Tip: Before deciding whether it is possible to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, you need to find an option that is suitable for finishing the walls or cover them also with liquid wallpaper.

What types of material exist and its characteristics

Liquid wallpaper is original coating for application to walls and ceilings, resembling a mixture of decorative plaster and paint.

The classic components of such a coating are:

  • Cellulose fiber.
  • Binding material.

In addition, it contains:

  • Special dyes.
  • Fabric fiber.
  • Dry seaweed.
  • Shredded tree bark.

Tip: Liquid wallpaper should not be used where it may come into contact with water.

When used in the kitchen, it is better to use for an apron:

  • Tiles.
  • Mosaic.
  • Other waterproof materials.

Liquid wallpaper fits well on plasterboard sheets, but in this case it is necessary to prepare the surface in advance, which consists of:

  • Puttying joints (see How to putty drywall joints according to technology).
  • Painting over screw heads.
  • Surface primers.
  • Stripping drywall sheets.
  • Applying liquid wallpaper.

When using the material, you can make patterns on the ceiling (see Liquid wallpaper and patterns: application technology). This is quite simple to do, but it will take quite a lot of extra time, much more than with conventional surface decoration.

To draw a picture, you will need to perform the following steps:

  • A drawing is applied with a pencil to a prepared dry surface.

This should be done very carefully, checking the size compliance several times; then different shades of liquid wallpaper will be applied according to this sketch.

  • When applying coating it is important:
  1. wallpaper color and number in the selected pattern;
  2. idea and complexity of the sketch.
  • Carefully apply the desired design elements to the prepared wallpaper.
  • Glass spatula small size Press the wallpaper mixture along the edges of the pattern.

Liquid wallpaper is most often used as a basis. white. They are almost completely smooth; they may contain silver sparkles, which are added if necessary to give the surface a little shine.

What tools do you need to buy?

Before applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, prepare:

  • A container for the material to swell in.
  • Construction spatula or trowel, for laying material on the ceiling. It’s easy enough to make a trowel yourself from a piece of plexiglass. An equilateral triangle should be cut out of it, with sides 5-6 centimeters long. After this, a handle is screwed to the plexiglass.
  • Foam or rubber roller.
  • Plastic graters.
  • Spray.
  • The roller is embossed.

There are special instructions for calculating the amount of wallpaper on the package. One package weighing 1.7 kilograms is usually enough for an area of about five square meters, with a layer thickness of 1.5 millimeters.

How to prepare surfaces

The peculiarity of liquid wallpaper is high adhesion or good adhesion to surfaces, with a base made of different materials. The main advantage of the material is that they do not peel off over time.

When applying liquid wallpaper, the ceiling should be prepared:

  • The surface must be completely solid and strong enough so that nothing falls off of it.
  • When in contact with moisture, the base should remain the same color. It refers to metal elements, which tends to become corroded upon contact with moisture.
  • The materials on the ceiling should not absorb moisture.

When preparing the ceiling:

  • First, fragments of the old finish that do not adhere well to the surface are removed.
  • When pasting the ceiling paper wallpaper, they are completely removed.
  • Large cracks are filled with putty. They can also be filled with liquid wallpaper, but this will increase the cost of repairs.
  • Before finishing, the ceiling surface is primed with a deep-penetrating primer of white or colorless color (see How to prime a ceiling: we’ll figure it out step by step), which will create an obstacle to the penetration of liquid deep into the surface and make the coating stronger.

Tip: For this work you should use a concentrated primer diluted in a ratio of 1:3. Do not use Ceresit CT17 material, which forms yellow spots on the finished surface.

  • If there are metal inclusions on the ceiling that, due to corrosion in certain places, can lead to the appearance of rust on the wallpaper, they must be coated with PF enamel or water-based paint.
  • On last stage In preparation the ceiling is made rough.
  • After applying plaster or starting putty liquid wallpaper is applied.

Tip: There is no need to sand the surface before applying the material. And when smooth ceiling, it should be treated with a primer that contains inclusions of quartz dust.

  • For even installation, without tearing the material, you can add quartz dust or fine sand to the primer.

How to prepare liquid wallpaper

The material can be purchased already prepared for use; it is usually packaged in buckets. But it is better to use dry mixture in bags, as shown in the photo.

Tip: Before diluting the solution, the bag with the material should be shaken well, this will ensure better mixing of the composition and will eliminate many lumps when applying the solution.

  • Selected suitable utensils for stirring liquid wallpaper, taking into account that one package of liquid wallpaper can be placed in it, usually about 7 liters. For ease of use, it is better to take a container with a depth of up to 30 centimeters and a diameter of up to 65 centimeters.

  • Pouring pure water same temperature as the room. In a hot liquid, the adhesion of the material decreases, and in a cold liquid it is uncomfortable to work, making kneads with bare hands.
  • You can dilute liquid wallpaper one package at a time or use several packages at once, choosing dishes of the appropriate size. It is more difficult to knead the contents of several bags, but this way it is easier to achieve uniform shade.
  • Liquid wallpaper is thoroughly mixed by hand and then left for 12 hours. After this, the solution is mixed again.

How to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

Is it possible to glue liquid wallpaper to ceilings? The procedure for applying it will tell you which is as follows:

  • Select a roller, or better yet, a smooth spatula made of plexiglass or stainless steel.
  • A stepladder or chair is installed for ease of work. In this case, the working area should always be placed directly in front of the eyes. The solution should be applied to the surface with a spatula at a slight angle, this will allow the composition to lie more evenly.
  • You cannot put pressure on the tool while working - the wallpaper should be loose. This application method allows you to obtain a good coating structure, which will prevent waste of material.

Tip: After applying the material to a specific area, you should visually check the result obtained. There should be no bumps, tears or gaps on the coating. The features of the material allow you to see all the shortcomings at any stage of the work and easily correct them.

  • To ensure that joints and seams are not visible on the ceiling surface, work must be carried out without stopping over the entire area.
  • A small part of the well-swollen mass is taken from the container and applied to the ceiling in an even layer with a thickness of one to four millimeters.
  • Using a smooth grater, the surface is carefully leveled and another portion of the material is applied, so that the boundaries between the areas are not visible.
  • In this case, the formation of the position of the fibers depends on the direction of smoothing the mixture. Changing the trajectory of movement allows you to achieve the desired decorative effect.
  • After laying the material, polymerization will occur within 24 hours adhesive composition. In this case, the coating should not be subjected to mechanical stress.
  • Liquid wallpaper dries naturally. This may take up to two days.

What is liquid wallpaper, is it possible to glue it to the ceiling, and how to do it correctly is shown in detail in the video.

How to mechanically lay material

At mechanically To decorate the ceiling with liquid wallpaper, a spray gun or compressor is used, with a working pressure of 0.5 MPa, and the unit capacity is more than 400 l/min. The spray nozzle should have a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters, which depends on the texture of the applied coating. The flow when applying the solution is controlled by changing the volume of water that is added to the mixture.

Unit:

  • First, a layer 1.5 millimeters thick is applied to the entire ceiling area.
  • After the surface has dried, the material is sprayed again, which gives the coating the necessary thickness.

If you spray in one thick layer at once, there may be a risk of the wallpaper sliding off the surface.

Tip: To make the treated ceiling surface moisture resistant, apply it on top of liquid wallpaper. acrylic lacquer, which will increase their service life in wet areas.

Finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper is not difficult. The main thing is to prepare the solution correctly, prepare the surface to be treated well, and apply the coating correctly.
