    But what is the difference between them and what is better - gypsum fiber board, plywood or plasterboard, given the same scope of application and composite structure of each?

    Drywall is a three-layer composite material consisting of modified gypsum in the middle, covered on both sides in a cardboard shell, depending on the impregnation, moisture-resistant and (or) fire-resistant. Also, various fire-resistant and antihydrophobic components are added to the core itself.

    This is how it exists:

    1. Regular - gypsum board;
    2. Moisture resistant - gypsum plasterboard;
    3. Fire resistant - GKLO;
    4. Fire- and water-resistant - GKLVO.

    Used for several purposes:

    • To create a smooth, uniform surface. Most often, plasterboard is used to cover walls, ceilings, and less often the floor due to its high fragility, however, floor blocks are still produced for rooms with light loads;
    • To level the plane, in this case a frame made of metal profiles or wooden sheathing is used;
    • During the construction of interior partitions;
    • To mask communications;
    • As a facing covering of the frame, used for intracavity insulation and sound insulation;
    • For the formation of decorative and useful structures - arches, niches, shelves, cabinets, multi-level ceilings.

    Advantages of gypsum plasterboard

    The main advantages of plasterboard in interior decoration:

    • Plasticity and the ability to create concave structures, arcs, using a bending machine, needle roller or cuts
    • A light weight
    • Possibility of quick installation/disassembly and ease of cutting
    • Hygroscopicity
    • Low cost
    • A large selection of subsequent cladding - painting, tiling, wallpapering and so on
    • Possibility of purchasing laminated gypsum board sheets that do not require finishing or puttying, as well as plasterboard blocks combined with insulation

    Disadvantages of drywall

    Along with the positive qualities, gypsum board has the following disadvantages:

    • Low resistance to direct moisture, even with moisture-resistant cardboard treatment
    • Fragility and low strength of the material
    • Impossibility of using nails during installation, while the composite holds perfectly on glue or screws
    • Maintaining maximum air dryness in storage conditions
    • Instability to mold, mildew

    GVL. Features and Applications

    Gypsum fiber sheet, just like drywall, is made from gypsum, with the difference that it is also mixed with cellulose waste paper using a semi-dry method.

    The areas of application for gypsum fiber board and gypsum board, as well as for plywood, are practically the same - cladding floors, walls, ceiling surfaces. It is much less suitable for arches due to its low ductility. Widely used in rooms with increased fire safety requirements.

    It has 2 types:

    1. Simple, general purpose - GVL;
    2. Moisture resistant - GVLV.

    Advantages of GVL

    The positive properties of gypsum fiber include:

    • High resistance to direct fire;
    • Significant sound absorption;
    • Versatile application;
    • Possibility of cladding;
    • Frost resistance;
    • Biostability.

    Weaknesses of GVL

    As you can see, GVL differs significantly from drywall, despite the approximate similarity in composition. Gypsum fiber blocks have a lot of positive qualities, but they also have disadvantages:

    • Low ductility - if you choose what is most suitable for construction, for example, arches, plasterboard or gypsum fiber, the advantage will be with the first material;
    • Considerable weight;
    • High price.

    Plywood. Features and Applications

    Today, debates among finishers continue to debate whether plywood or plasterboard is the most suitable material for finishing, since these materials are considered the main competitors in finishing.

    Plywood is also a sheet composite, which is made by gluing several layers of peeled birch, pear, maple, hornbeam or coniferous veneer with formaldehyde resins under significant temperature and pressure. It is often confused with chipboard, however, the difference between them is significant, both in the field of manufacturing technology and technical characteristics.

    There are 5 main types of plywood:

    1. FBA - ordinary general purpose sheets;
    2. FC - moisture resistant;
    3. FSF - increased moisture resistance;
    4. FOF - laminated, non-hydrophobic;
    5. FBS - resistant to moisture, fire and frost.

    Depending on the type of plywood, it is widely used:

    • In the cladding of walls, ceilings, floor coverings, building facades, as a rough or finishing coating;
    • To create some types of furniture;
    • When designing multi-level structures;
    • For box masking of communications.

    Advantages of plywood

    The advantages of using this material include:

    • More economical to purchase than chipboard;
    • High strength, unlike gypsum plasterboard;
    • Durability;
    • Biostability.

    Disadvantages of plywood

    The disadvantages of plywood include:

    Flammability;
    Poor resistance to moisture (when using non-moisture resistant general purpose material);
    Low environmental friendliness due to the use of phenolic resins in manufacturing;
    High price;
    Low ductility;
    Low sound absorption;
    Complexity of cladding.

    Differences and similarities of facing materials

    All 3 types of cladding differ from each other in:

    • Manufacturing technologies and raw materials;
    • Advantageous parameters;
    • Technical specifications.

    Similar features should be noted:

    • Sheet composite structure;
    • Ease of installation;
    • Possibility of use on different surfaces;
    • A variety of types according to the degree of moisture resistance and fire resistance;
    • Environmental friendliness.

    Comparison of materials for dry wall cladding

    In order to compare which is better - gypsum fiber board, plasterboard or plywood, it would be necessary to conduct a comparative analysis of the main technical characteristics of each. However, given the difference in indicators depending on the type and brand, doing this based on specific digital facts will be very problematic. These parameters depend on the needs of the consumer and the scope of application of the slabs.

    However, we can highlight the main positive features and properties of each, as well as their disadvantages, using as an example a standard table of characteristics of general purpose boards - plywood, gypsum fiber board and gypsum plasterboard for interior decoration.

    Thus, we see that gypsum fiber boards have the greatest advantages according to the given criteria. But this data is not critical. For example, where both gypsum fiber board and gypsum board are suitable for use, the second material will be preferable due to its lower cost.

    And, in addition, every year new materials appear on the market, such as LSU - a relatively cheap sheet material with excellent quality parameters. Therefore, when choosing, focus primarily on financial capabilities and application needs in a particular room.

    Plywood or drywall - which is better?

    Sheathing can be done using either plasterboard or plywood. It's up to you to decide what's best. Before choosing which material is better to use for the job: drywall or plywood, you need to decide what you want.

    Plywood is more natural material, since it itself consists of birch veneer and glue, which holds all the layers of plywood together. Exists a large number of varieties of plywood, one more stable and durable, the other more flexible. But overall the material is quite useful and practical. Plywood can be five-layer, three-layer or simply multi-layer. In general, plywood is used to provide insulation in industries such as: aviation, shipbuilding. In addition, it serves as a material for bushings for bearings.

    As for drywall, its materials cannot be called environmentally friendly, because... its surface is a cardboard sheet, and the inside is filled with gypsum dough with various chemical additives.

    Features of both types of materials

    Also, when determining: drywall or plywood, take into account other features of these materials.

    The only and main drawback plywood is deformed due to any type of moisture. Therefore, using this material it is better to check the humidity of the room. Although plywood is well suited for flooring as well as extensive installations.

    Drywall, of course, has more advantages: it is resistant to moisture, suitable for the construction of partitions or ceiling cladding, in addition, it is excellent for quick installation.

    Debates regarding which is better: plywood or plasterboard are ongoing among builders. Some say that you simply cannot find a better material than drywall. It is moisture-resistant, difficult to ignite, and in addition, profiles for it can be easily found. It is easy to use and quite cheap.

    Those who fight for environmentally friendly building materials come to the defense of plywood. Perhaps plywood is a little more expensive than drywall, but it is made from natural materials. In addition, the strength of plywood has not been in doubt for many years, and drywall, in turn, is a rather fragile material in this sense.

    In general, what is better: drywall or plywood is up to you to decide. For those who are more concerned about the environmental friendliness of their premises and the strength of materials, plywood is suitable, but for those who prefer cheap and easy-to-handle material, drywall is more suitable.
