It's no secret that good furniture is very expensive, moreover. And antiques have an exorbitant value. It's like with clothes: it seems that there is a lot of everything on sale, and there are no problems with the choice, but you just have to look more closely, and you find out that there is nothing suitable. It is very difficult to find the thing of your dreams.
And, finally, it's a pity to part with the old one, but quality furniture especially from. Quality is also a piece product. So do not rush to throw away, say, old wardrobe... It can be completely renewed and given new life.

But, in order to choose the right way to decorate, you need to consider what your wardrobe is made of and what is the degree of wear and tear. And there may be several cases.

Natural wood

This is a noble, worthy material. Previously, wooden products were of very high quality.
First of all, you need to fix the broken fasteners and be sure to wipe the dust off the cabinet. It would be nice to treat the inside of the cabinet with a special antibacterial aerosol or rub it with vinegar to get rid of bad smell... Well, then - choose one of the methods of external decor.

Toning. If there are defects on the surface of the cabinet - scratches, chips, cracks, they must be putty with a special wood putty, the color of which must be matched to the color of the wood of the cabinet. When the putty is dry, you need to sand these places with sandpaper, and then cover the entire cabinet with a special structured wood stain. The color of the stain should be chosen darker than the original color of the cabinet. As a result, you will get a completely new look.

Aging. This method is suitable for natural wood products. It involves painting the cabinet and some special effects. You can make a "shabby" surface.
To do this, a light tree is first painted in a dark brown color or in maroon, dark lilac, etc. (based on the prevailing colors interior), then, when the paint dries, rub some places with a candle, and then paint the cabinet in light color- beige, white, cream. After that, the surface is wiped with sandpaper, and in places dark "scuffs" appear from under the light paint.
If the cabinet is dark, you can make craquelures.

Painting. It also provides for staining in any color, but not too dark. Furniture paints are used. When the paint dries, the cabinet fronts are painted with acrylic paints. The safest option is stencil painting.

Decoupage. Perhaps no other type of decor will give such a stunning effect as decoupage. If you decorate furniture using this technique, the effect is guaranteed to be the same as if a professional was working on this piece.
This is due to the specifics of the "pictures" for decoupage, and special techniques for decorating images greatly enhance the effect. The effect is as if it were painting. Furniture becomes original, one-of-a-kind.
To decorate the wardrobe using decoupage technique, napkins with a suitable pattern are selected, the pattern is cut out, stratified and then glued using a special glue. Finished work covered with furniture varnish on top, preferably in two layers. Decoupage looks great on light wood. But the dark cabinet must be painted first.

New fittings ... New pens are not a trifle at all - they give up to 40% success.

Inlay. Sounds loud, but in reality it is just surface decoration with overhead elements, not at all precious stones... You can use lace, embroidery and vinyl openwork napkins. The embroidery is simply attached to the doors directly within the frames using small screws. If the embroidery is without frames, then they can simply be glued using shoe glue, and then "organize" them into a frame made of colored foam "stucco molding".

And also, you can make an excellent jewelry box or chest for jewelry made of wood or thick cardboard. Watch an exclusive master class in a special video.

Wardrobe made of chipboard or composite materials
This material, of course, is less valuable than natural wood... If the cabinet is in good condition, then all of the above methods for a wooden cabinet are suitable for its decor, except, of course, tinting. If the condition is poor, then it is better to replace the doors. .

Dark polished wardrobe
A fairly common model, the decor of which is aerobatics for any decorator. The fact is that the synthetic dark varnish, which was used for such furniture, cannot be removed and almost no decorative materials... Tactics in in this case such. If the cabinet is in poor condition, it is better to replace the doors. If everything is in order with the quality, then you can use two methods of decoration:

Tupovka and stucco ... Tupovka is the tinting of the surface with a sponge. You need to use gold or copper metallic paint, it lays down on a similar polish. The technique consists in the fact that in some places you fill the paint with up and down movements of the sponge. After that, the cabinet looks much more noble! After that, PVC stucco borders are glued along the perimeter of the doors, and a rosette made of such stucco moldings in the center of each of the doors.

Stencil ornament ... You also need to use gold or copper paint, only aerosol. Before that, you need to glue a large stencil with an ornament (for example, in the Baroque style) on the doors. Then from above, on a stencil, treat the entire surface with an aerosol matte varnish, this is done in order to create a base for paint. In this case, varnish is a primer. After 5 minutes, the colored spray can be applied. After another 5 minutes, remove the stencil - and here you are new wardrobe completely different from the previous one!

If you have recently made a repair or are just going to start it, then besides the repair you are probably tormented by the question of choosing furniture. For example, in a new bedroom, a new wardrobe would be useful, which will harmoniously fit into new interior... What do most people do? Buys a new cabinet, and the old one goes to a landfill or country house... However, why waste money if you can do stylish wardrobe, which will look in any interior from the old! Moreover, for this it is not at all necessary to be a designer or possess great skill in the restoration of furniture. A good idea is enough, and a little time and effort.

For example, with the help of a small application of forces and great photo Appliques can be used to create a stylish wardrobe that will easily become the "star" of almost any interior. To do this, it is enough to clean the doors of the old cabinet with sandpaper, paint them with white paint, and then glue the image you like on the cabinet doors, which can be printed in large format in any large photo studio. Then cover the cabinet with colorless varnish.

But to give an old wardrobe a new look, it is not at all necessary to use beautiful photographs. You can decorate it with the curly planks found in every hardware store. And then paint it with stained paint. You can see how this is done in the picture. Thin slats are nailed to the cabinet and then painted blue. As a result, instead of the traditional factory wardrobe of the 60s and 70s, we get a stylized Mediterranean wardrobe of the late nineteenth century, which looks great in a gentle blue interior.

If you have an old favorite wardrobe, worn out, slightly loosened, but very comfortable, or you do not plan to buy a fashionable now fashionable compartment, you can update your wardrobe with self-adhesive film.

Self-adhesive film is found in various colors and patterns, which will allow you to easily make from an old cabinet original furniture , you can cover the shelves with foil, update the cabinet on the balcony or kitchen, and also improve country furniture and much more can be done with film.

For example, here's how I updated my closet:

There are two types of self-adhesive film - this is a standard film, which can be glossy or matte, various children's, marble designs and the like.

And also a special film - furniture, door or metallic, for various tabletops.

When working with self-adhesive tape, you must observe certain rules :

1.Prepare the surface for pasting, it is necessary to remove dust and dirt from it with water and the addition of detergents. The surface must be flat, if it is not, then it must be leveled with a primer or plaster.

2. When noting the necessary pieces for pasting from the seamy side of the film, it is imperative to remember about the allowances at the edges, where they are required.

3. In order to glue the film, it is necessary to remove the protective paper from the seamy side by a couple of centimeters and fix it to the surface to be coated with the glue side.

It is necessary to carefully monitor during gluing so that air bubbles do not appear, therefore it must be glued very slowly and carefully, all the time smoothing the surface of the film.

4. If bubbles have formed that cannot be removed, you can pierce them with a needle and smooth them out.

The moment comes when you need to accept important decision- throw away old furniture. For a long time she has not "fit" into modern interior, but still something does not allow to carry the old stuff to the landfill. And rightly so, it is better to update an old cabinet than to throw it away.

It's about a good old wooden furniture... Of course, if you have a Chinese-made product made from pressed sawdust and plastic at home, it will be much more difficult to restore it. But if you still have a wooden "Soviet" cabinet, then you just need to breathe new life into it.

Consider the popular ways to update furniture:

  1. Art Deco style restoration.
  2. Decoupage.
  3. Covering with self-adhesive film.
  4. Craquelure.

Art Deco restoration

A lot of ideas are always spinning in my head, and it is sometimes so difficult to implement them! First, you need to think about how to make sure that your updated wardrobe is in harmony with the design of the room. Please select suitable shade paints and select the appropriate fittings.

Look at this photo, this is how our updated wardrobe will look like:

What tools are needed:

  • sander (or sandpaper with different grain);
  • screwdriver;
  • screwdriver;
  • construction narrow spatula;
  • freyts or paint roller;
  • brush;
  • glue;
  • self-tapping screws.

You need to purchase the following:

  1. Putty (for working with wood surfaces).
  2. Primer liquid.
  3. Enamel in cylinders (buy automotive black and metallic);
  4. Furniture tape.
  5. Glass (mirrored).

Before starting work, we carefully examine the cabinet. All loose fasteners must be tightened, and the old nails must be replaced with self-tapping screws. If there are dangling hinges, it is advisable to either tighten them up or replace them with new ones. In addition, when installing a new fastener, the joint is additionally processed with glue. If rust appears, it must be removed (you can clean it or remove it with a rust remover solution).

Work plan:

  1. We remove the old coating with emery paper or a grinder. Perhaps after removing the top layer in the tree, you will find a woodworm beetle. In this case, the surface must be wiped with an antiseptic.

  1. We carefully examine the cabinet. If dents and chips are found, they can be "treated" as follows: prime the surface, let it dry and fill them with a putty mixture. Apply it thin layer, because if it is dense and thick, then the mixture will not dry out and will crack.

  1. Cracks and deep scratches can be filled furniture wax... It happens different types: hard, soft, colorless or with added shade. Warm up the wax and fill in the cracks. If you are going to paint the surface of the cabinet in the future, then work with colorless wax. You can remove minor defects with sandpaper.

How to paint an old wardrobe?

After all the damage has been repaired, you can prepare the cabinet for painting. Want to transform your furniture to the point where even your family won't recognize? First you need to sandpaper the places with putty and apply a layer of primer mixture. This important part of the work should not be skipped, because the paint on an unprepared surface can lie unevenly.

How to paint the wardrobe:

  1. First, take a can of the base color. We chose the metallic color. Limit with construction tape the part that will not be painted in the main color.
  2. Apply the base color to the surface first and wait for it to dry.
  3. The next step is to apply the second color.

Immediately after staining, you will see how much your furniture will transform.

Then let's start assembling: take mirror glass and insert it into the cabinet doors, screw the fittings.

Decoupage cabinet

The restoration of an old cabinet will bring you real pleasure if you choose the decoupage technique. Nowadays, its popularity is increasing day by day. The principle is as follows: with the help of the selected picture, the design of your furniture changes completely.

What tools and materials are needed:

  • primer for wood;
  • paint (acrylic);
  • acrylic varnish (colorless);
  • sandpaper;
  • paint brush;
  • roller (if the cabinet area is large);
  • a picture (you can take a napkin with a pattern, cut out a picture you like from a magazine, or order a photo print).

The work plan is as follows:

  1. We clean the surface with sandpaper.
  2. Apply a primer mixture and leave it until completely absorbed for a day.
  3. We paint the cabinet in the selected color (when choosing a color, be guided by the shade of the selected picture).
  4. We wait for the paint to dry completely (one to two days).

After preparatory phase we proceed to the most crucial moment. Cut out the selected image (do not forget to match it by color, size or the theme of your interior).

We apply the cut-out picture to the surface and see what happens. If you don't like it, then try another picture. Mark it with a pencil. Then, in order not to get the effect of pasted paper, but the effect of painting, you need to carefully thin it by five to seven millimeters with sandpaper on the back of the picture along the edges. This way we have a very thin, literally papyrus edge.

How to glue the image correctly:

  1. Dip the picture into a container of water. Let the paper saturate well.
  2. Place it on a towel and cover the top with a free edge.
  3. Using a brush, apply glue to the place where your picture will be.
  4. Place the damp paper on the surface and gently flatten it from center to edge. Make sure that the fit is perfect, without "wrinkles".

This is how the images should be glued.

As a result, you will have a delicate neat cabinet:

Restoration of the wardrobe

An old wardrobe can be renewed with a self-adhesive foil. It can be matte and glossy, with colored patterns, as well as "wood", "marble", "metallic".

It is good to cover with film not only the outer part of the cabinet, but also shelves and drawers.

Work plan:

  1. The surface must be prepared in advance and cleaned of dust with any detergent. Pour a little into the bowl warm water, drip detergent and lather. Use a soft, absorbent cloth to wipe the cabinet.
  2. If the doors and side parts of the wardrobe have roughness, chips or cracks, first putty them. Remember to apply a primer mixture.
  3. Treat the surface with a special degreaser.
  4. Take the tape and outline it from the inside out right size... Don't forget to add a couple of centimeters to the edge allowances.
  5. To stick the film, carefully peel off the backing paper, but not completely, but only ten centimeters.
  6. Fasten the liberated sticky layer on the surface. With help soft tissue or a special spatula, gently smooth out the film. Make sure that no air bubbles appear.
  7. So, step by step, carefully remove the backing paper and stick the film.
  8. If bubbles have formed, and it is no longer possible to remove them, then you can carefully pierce them with a needle and release the air.

Craquelure technique

This type of furniture decoration is distinguished by its simplicity. There will be no special material costs for the restoration of the old cabinet.

Necessary materials:

  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic paint;
  • craquelure varnish (one-component);
  • acrylic matt varnish;
  • wide brush.

How to restore an old cabinet using the craquelure technique:

  1. Prepare the surface, clean and apply two to three coats of primer, dry.
  2. Apply paint (the base color should be darker because it will show through the cracks). Wait until it dries completely.
  3. Quickly and evenly coat the entire previously painted surface with craquelure varnish. The thicker the layer is, the more visible and larger the cracks will be. Dry the varnish so that it sticks to your fingers without leaving a mark.
  4. Apply a second tone of paint (light). Across certain time a characteristic "mesh" will appear.
  5. After the paint has completely dried, cover the surface acrylic varnish.

How to work with varnish:

  • when buying a varnish in a store, choose a liquid one, because a viscous substance will lay down worse, and when it dries, the layer will be uneven;
  • do not shake the varnish before applying, because air bubbles can ruin your work;
  • if you are working with the material for the first time, practice on a different surface in advance to understand the principle;
  • the room where you are going to work should not be cold and damp;
  • do it in the room a few hours before starting work wet cleaning so you get rid of small debris and dust particles on the drying surface.

The principle of work with two-phase varnish craquelure

If a drawing is pasted on the cabinet doors that you do not want to paint over, then you need to use a two-phase craquelure varnish.

Technique of cabinet restoration with two-phase craquelure:

  1. Take a two-phase varnish. The first composition "ages" the surface, the second - forms cracks.
  2. Oil paint.
  3. Varnish (acrylic).
  4. Brushes ( the average size, two or three pieces).
  5. Bitumen or colored grout.
  6. Foam sponge.

The surface must be covered with the first layer of varnish and dried. Apply the second varnish quickly and dry the surface. When cracks appear, they need to be treated with grout. Use a foam sponge. Colored powder will "refine" the pattern of cracks and give the cabinet a completely different look. Then apply a coat of varnish and leave to dry completely.

Look at the photo how the old cabinet looks like:

Today, many people have at home old furniture... It seems to be a pity to throw it out, but it also spoils the view. In reality, a simple restoration needs to be done. How to do it? Let's understand this article.

Work process

Let's say we have such a closet. After the renovation, it will stand in the hallway. We can say to meet guests. First you need to remove everything you can. This is primarily the door. The mezzanine should be at the bottom. It will be convenient to store your shoes here. Bars are placed under it along the edges, which are screwed in with self-tapping screws.

The cabinet from above must be divided with a partition. Any board of the appropriate size will usually work.

A crossbar should be placed on one side. It is perfect for coats and other clothing. On the other hand, you need to put 2-3 shelves. Planks will do again.

In this photo you can see the switch. But it is possible for him to just cut a small hole.

The bottom of the furniture has become the top. Umbrellas and hats can be stored here. As a rule, old furniture is not very attractive. But this is easy to change. It is enough just to repaint it white. It is almost universal. Such a miniature mezzanine will perfectly fit into the distance that is between the main cabinet and the wall. Self-tapping screws and corners are used for fastening.

First, sand the entire surface. Everything is covered with putty before painting. Cover everything thoroughly with paint. Then treat the surface with varnish for durability.

The doors are painted the same color. You can use patterns from an old cabinet. Just be sure to paint them with gold paint.

Due to the fact that the doors from another cabinet turned out to be small, I had to use a special insert. There are many decorative solutions... But you can additionally screw the handles you like.

Shelves can be covered with foil, and the rest can be processed acrylic enamel which is odorless. A special decorative cutout can be made on the left side. See how great it looks.

As you can see, it is quite easy to carry out such a restoration. This does not require a lot of money and time. Almost anyone can do it. Almost any furniture can be processed this way. Naturally, you can make some adjustments of your own. Just use your imagination.

It happens that old furniture falls into disrepair. You can use it, but appearance does not cause positive emotions. To extend the life of the product, you need to restore it. Before restoring an old cabinet, you need to decide on a set of tools, as well as on the technique that will be used.

The components that will be used during the restoration of the product depend on the chosen method of work. If you do not have certain skills in decor, do not despair - we recommend that you pay attention to the following types of work:

  • painting the cabinet;
  • the use of craquelure varnish;
  • decoupage technique.

Painting

Craquelure

Even a teenager can carry out these methods of repairing a product. Do-it-yourself cabinet restoration presupposes an idea or choice of style for the future masterpiece. To do this, it is worth referring to the existing interior: if it is made in vintage style- Craquelure varnishing technique is suitable. If the interior is made in classic style- choose painting followed by drawing the image. When the design of a room requires elements of romance - good decision will be decoupage.

The restoration of a chipboard cabinet begins with the repair of visible defects. To move on to the decor of the facades and ends, it is worth carefully examining the hinges of the product, checking the integrity of the fittings. Open the cabinet and inspect the drawer drawers, and also check inner space on chips and holes. All noticed defects must be eliminated. This can be done easily with a hammer and nails, as well as by replacing faulty mechanisms with new analogues.

A universal list of tools for restoring an old cabinet with your own hands looks like this:

  • sandpaper or Sander- to make the plane even and smooth surface;
  • a screwdriver or screwdrivers for the diameter of all bolts - for possible adjustment of the product and removal of accessories before stripping;
  • spatula - for covering holes and chips;
  • paint roller and a narrow brush - in order to renew the coating;
  • joiner's glue or PVA;
  • a set of self-tapping screws for replacement.

Directly for the decoupage technique, you will need napkins with a pattern or ornament, acrylic varnish, a special thin synthetic brush with fan-shaped bristles. Also, the restoration of an old cabinet implies the presence of a primer, putty for wood, paints for working in the painting technique, masking tape. To apply craquelure, you will need a varnish of the same name.

It is necessary to immediately decide on the idea of restoration, because without an idea to make beautiful product will not work. Consult with your household and find out about their desires.

Stages of restoration using staining

Before studying a master class on dyeing a product for storing clothes, it is recommended to carry out preparatory work on wood. These include cleaning and sanding old coatings. It is important to achieve a smooth surface so that when painting the brush evenly applies the composition.

For small areas use sandpaper to process a large area - use grinder... The final stage of preparation always involves the use of the finest grain sandpaper on wood.

As soon as the work with defects is completed, decorators are advised to move on to the primer. This stage is no less important than the painting itself. It is necessary to restore the old cabinet with your own hands with high quality, so the soil will a great solution: it will hide all cracks and fill the pores. In addition, a primed coating will absorb less colorant.

After waiting for the product to dry completely, we restore the cabinet with paint:

  • we unscrew all the accessories that will prevent the brush from penetrating into narrow places;
  • those elements that cannot be removed - we seal them with masking tape in order to preserve their original appearance;
  • for painting wood, it is better to use special acrylic compounds- they fit better on a plane and create protective layer films. Pour the paint into a roller container and get to work;
  • first we process everything internal elements: shelves, compartments, mezzanines. After that, we move on to painting the facades, as shown in the photo;
  • after the first layer has dried, apply the second, and if necessary, the third layer of paint. This is necessary to achieve the brightness of the color and complete filling of all gaps;
  • a dry cabinet must be opened with varnish in several stages.

Restorers advise to show imagination and make the cabinet not in a monochromatic version, but to add several colors to the facades. The easiest option is geometric figures... To do this, using masking tape glue some part of the facade and paint the rest of the area in a different color. For originality, you can arrange a cabinet in a contrasting design.

Using craquelure

Coating technique wooden products with a special varnish, consisting of 2 components, will allow you to transform an out-of-fashion wardrobe. With its help, it is really possible to create an old wardrobe that grandmothers used. To complete the work, you will need PVA glue, craquelure, acrylic paint and varnish, a wide brush.

The technique also does not require specialized talents, all manipulations are similar to ordinary staining. The algorithm of actions looks like this:

  • preparation - the old product is sanded, if necessary, a putty is used to seal large holes. The final stage of preparation will be a primer in several layers;
  • coloring - for work you will need compositions of 2 colors: dark and light. They do not have to be in harmony - the dark version is used to decorate cracks, and the light one is for the main coloring. Using a brush, apply dark color, evenly distributing it over the surface of the product;
  • craquelure - as soon as the paint coat has dried, you can apply the craquelure. This must be done quickly and preferably in several layers - the greater the thickness of the varnish, the more visible the cracks will be. Dry the product until your fingers stick slightly;
  • the second color - a master class on craquelure at this stage suggests applying a light color and waiting for gradual drying. As soon as the coating dries up, a characteristic mesh will become visible;
  • varnishing - a completely dry restored cabinet is covered with acrylic varnish to consolidate the effect.

When choosing a craquelure, it should be borne in mind that if there is an image on the cabinet, you should not touch it. For this, a two-phase composition is used, the work with which is characterized by application in 2 stages.

This technique is suitable for the restoration of cabinet facades, however, similar manipulations can be performed inside the product. A beautiful antique wardrobe will appeal to all lovers of a vintage interior.

Decoupage

Modern art stores will surprise any novice craftsman or amateur with an abundance of assortment of napkins and paper for decoupage. Napkins are small and are often used to decorate small items. In the case of a wardrobe, they can be viewed as design elements for drawers or mezzanines. Decoupage paper is produced in large sizes, therefore it will be optimal for this type of work.

Before restoring the wardrobe, select the subject for the product. These can be floral motifs, historical ornaments, images of people, heroes, or just vintage pictures. Decoupage consists of several stages:

  • the surface prepared for repair is polished and primed in several layers. After that, apply a light acrylic paint to give a background;
  • at this stage, paper materials are applied to the surface of the cabinet, mentally inventing the plot and location of each detail;
  • transferring a picture to a surface is considered one of the difficult activities. You can use the "file method" for this. Prepare a regular office file, remove the top 2 layers from the napkin and place it image down on the file. Next, take a spray bottle with water and gradually moisten the entire napkin. As soon as it gets wet, use your fingers to gently push all the bubbles out. If this is not done, wrinkles will be visible on the product. As soon as the napkin has become even and smooth, we apply it along with the file to the surface of the cabinet. Carefully delete the file and move on to the next step;
  • using a thin synthetic brush and special glue, we process the surface of a napkin or paper in 1 layer;
  • as soon as the napkin sticks and dries, it is necessary to treat the plane with acrylic varnish. The photo shows options for decoupage old cabinets.

The restored furniture gives the room a fresh look - it looks original and non-standard. Such products will delight all guests, positioning the owner as a novice decorator.
