Bathroom renovation after completion of the main work moves into the installation stage important elements, without which the overall picture will be incomplete. Such details include finishing with a border, otherwise it is called a plinth or a corner.

If the word border is not found on the package, but says “ceramic fillet,” then you need to keep in mind that this is the professional name of the product.

Ceramic finishing will add stylistic completeness to the bathroom and emphasize the thoughtfulness of the interior design.

Varieties

Ceramic borders– a high-quality product, strong and durable, which is a special corner for sealing the joint between the bathroom and the adjacent wall.

The warranty period is at least ten years. Modern hardware stores offer wide choose color palette and design, shape and configuration of ceramic borders, allowing you to choose the right format for any bathroom interior.

Manufacturers are striving to improve models of ceramic skirting boards to expand the scope of application and functionality.

Today, there are three main types:

Pencil

It is a thin and curved strip. On outside decorative texture. Curbs are designed to handle narrow and long gaps, as well as visually delineate elements.

Corner

The most common type, representing a model for sealing joints with a medium-sized gap. Wide selection of designs, colors, decor. Facing tiles can be supplied with a ceramic corner.

Frieze

A combined version of a tile and a corner, in the form of a kind of overlap to cover the joint. Unfortunately, it is less common than traditional forms.

The versatility of many modern borders is manifested in installation not only on the finishing material, but also on the rough base. Manufacturers have thought through elements for convenient, aesthetic and reliable joining of parts: stars for corners and plugs for edges.

– the most vulnerable to water ingress. Efforts to install the container end-to-end are useless; the appearance of a gap is inevitable. Sealing cracks to prevent the appearance of fungus and mold is the main task of curbs. Increased humidity due to the accumulation of dampness is a threat to all bathroom interior items, especially to metal plumbing parts.

Another task– providing an aesthetic appearance that allows you to visually evaluate the adjacent walls, sides and bathtub as a whole. Ceramic modules can be a design highlight in the overall style of the bathroom.

Advantages and disadvantages

Choosing ceramic modules means giving preference to quality and durability, since this is the main advantage, but there are others:

  1. Use in areas with wide gaps, where the use of other models is not possible.
  2. Specifications, which do not allow reaction to humidity factors, temperature changes or cleaning compositions based on chemical reagents.
  3. High resistance to deformation from the external environment.
  4. Maintaining the original appearance during the period of operation.
  5. Ecological cleanliness natural material.
  6. Possibility to choose from a single collection with finishing tiles.
  7. Wide range of colors, texture and decor.

The disadvantages include the following features:

  1. Low resistance impact force.
  2. Difficult to install.
  3. ABOUT regarding high price products.

It is worth noting that with careful and careful attitude, the purchase costs will quickly pay off, since there will be no need to replace or restore the ceramic corner for many years.

Characteristics and dimensions

An alternative ceramic finishing may be self-adhesive tape or a plastic corner.

What unites these varieties is the factor of temporality. The tape border is made of polyethylene and is easy to apply, but the rapid loss of functionality and appearance negates its advantages. The average service life is one year.

The plastic corner is also easy to install, lasts longer, but loses its attractiveness: it turns yellow from dampness. Main disadvantage– does not guarantee the tightness of the joint. The presence of narrow cracks allows moisture to accumulate behind the bathtub with all its consequences.

Ceramic border will provide:

  1. Complete protection against moisture getting outside the bath.
  2. Maintaining appearance.
  3. Durability of use – from 30 to 50 years.

Before visiting a hardware store, you need to take measurements along the perimeter of the bathroom (2 or 3 sides) in order to calculate the number of ceramic elements needed to seal the joint. The resulting result will need to be divided by the length of one module and rounded towards a larger integer.

You need to buy 3-4 more pieces, since during installation, during the fitting process, rejected parts inevitably appear due to unforeseen situations.

The dimensions of pencil borders are usually 15 mm in width and 20 cm in length. Standard dimensions of a ceramic corner are: 20 cm for length, 5.5 cm for height and depth.

Installation

Border under tiles

It is customary to use two main methods for installing ceramic modules:

  1. Under the tiles. This method is applicable at the renovation stage, when the walls have not yet been tiled.
  2. On the tile. Installation is possible both before and after wall cladding; it is allowed as restoration work if necessary.

In shape, ceramic modules can be convex or concave, they can be included in the kit additional elements in the form of plugs for edges and junction corners.

Many people believe that the installation of a ceramic corner should be trusted to professionals. This correct solution, but if you wish and have experience, you can handle tiles yourself, subject to careful study of the technology.

To work you will need the following:

  • material in the right quantity;
  • tile adhesive, 1-2 kg;
  • silicone sealant for waterproofing the gap, with antiseptic (in tubes of 50 ml, 3 pcs.);
  • polyurethane foam (for wide gaps between the wall and the bathroom);
  • masking tape;
  • putty knife;
  • emery block;
  • pliers;
  • Bulgarian:
  • gun (may not be useful if the sealant is in a tube);

Step by step guide:

  1. Surface preparation. The walls and the bathtub need to be wiped, then the joint around the perimeter should be degreased and dried thoroughly.
  2. Apply a layer of sealant using a gun or from a tube, in an even layer. Use a spatula to even out the application line, remove excess with a sponge dipped in water. For wide gaps, the sealant can be replaced with polyurethane foam. Possible voids should not be left so that water does not subsequently get there.
  3. Glue preparation. It is recommended to strictly follow the instructions. The glue should have a consistency similar to thick sour cream; it should not slide off the spatula.
  4. If the border elements could not be prepared in advance, then this stage needs to be made up. If necessary, you need to prepare modules cut at an angle of 45 degrees. This can be done with a grinder or pliers. The cut line should be sanded with an emery block. The corners must be processed so that when connecting, the gap is minimal.

This work may not be required if there is a corner blank for the ceramic border:

  1. It is recommended to lay the border from the corners. Use a spatula to carefully apply glue to the back of the border and press it against the wall. Excess glue should be removed. Application should be as dense as possible. Can be used rubber mallet for careful alignment of parts.
  2. After complete drying, after a day, use sealant to seal the smallest cracks.
  3. Upon completion of work, it is recommended to generously water the border and corners to ensure the strength of the adhesive.

If you plan to attach borders to tiles, the process will be much simpler:

  1. Waterproof glue (liquid nails) should be applied to the grease-free tiles on the wall. The curb should be pressed firmly to adhere to the adhesive.
  2. It is advisable to use a building level for work. It is recommended to remove excess glue in a timely manner.
  3. After hardening, use grout putty to treat all seams.

The cost consists of several main indicators:

  1. Material of manufacture.
  2. Manufacturer country.
  3. Available complete with facing tiles.
  4. Color and texture(white and smooth are always cheaper).

It should be noted that ordering in an online store is more profitable than in a construction supermarket, but many people prefer to hold the product in their hands before purchasing in order to feel it in reality.

Cost of one white ceramic corner of standard size– from 30 rubles, color – from 40 rubles.

Adviсe:

  1. Before adding a border sticker, prepare special plastic crosses to maintain the gap between the modules of the same width.
  2. Grouting joints between border elements, must be done with the same grout composition as for facing tiles.
  3. Ceramic mosaic helps with complex geometric lines, since small elements help preserve even oval lines.
  4. Carefully prepared and executed work will undoubtedly be crowned with success.

Every little detail is important in the interior of a bathroom. Neither ultra-modern acrylic bathtub, nor expensive collectible wall tiles will look perfect if there is an unattractive gap between them.

Traditionally, the impractical gap is covered with a special border or plinth. We will try to figure out how to choose the right border for the bathroom and consider the installation stages.

The absence of a gap between the bathtub bowl and the wall can be achieved in the only way: to perfectly level the wall and also ideally lay ceramic tiles. However, even after the work of professional tilers, a narrow, barely noticeable gap remains. In addition, some incompleteness will spoil general form, and the risk of moisture entering the gap will remain.

For this reason, experts insist on laying a border - a continuous sealed tape or structure that tightly closes the wall space and protects the space under the bathroom from high humidity and mold. Thus, the additional element performs two functions:

  • provides comfortable atmosphere, protecting from moisture;
  • helps to give a finished look to the finishing design.

Even if you have rounded corners (found in panel houses) or uneven walls, the situation will be corrected by curbs for ceramic tiles in the bathroom - they compensate for shortcomings and cover the gap.

On the Internet you can find advice on how to do without a border altogether. “Craftsmen” advise installing the bathtub flush against the wall, and then laying the tiles so that the bottom row rests directly on the acrylic (or steel) side. This method is used provided that 100% capacity stability is ensured. If the bathtub settles over time, there will be an untidy gap that will still have to be masked.

It remains to find out what size the border should be. Its length can be any (ceramic parts are selected according to the width of the tile, plastic parts - according to the length of the side), the width depends on the size of the gap. A narrow gap (up to 3 mm) is initially filled with sealant, a gap of 0.3-2.5 cm is filled with polyurethane foam, a distance from 2.5 cm to 6 cm is filled concrete mortar(using formwork).

Therefore, in the first case, a border 3 cm wide is sufficient, in the second - 3-6 cm, and in the last case you will have to look for the widest possible option.

Types of borders: how to choose the right one?

If you purchase collectible ceramics, you may also find special elements for decorating your bathtub in the set. But more often the main details are the wall and floor tiles, decorative elements and wall borders not intended for sealing joints. In this case, you will have to buy additional elements, so we will try to understand their classification.

Ceramics: reliable and attractive

Along with natural stone ceramic tiles are the best material for cladding walls and floors in bathrooms and bathrooms. This is the only material of natural origin that “gets along” well next to water, does not lose its appearance for decades and exhibits amazing properties wear resistance.

Accordingly, ceramic corners have all the qualities of tiles. Despite the fact that they are in a kind of risk zone - at the junction of the wall and the bathtub - their service life is not inferior to the longevity of wall cladding.

Ceramic border elements are environmentally friendly, since natural materials take a greater part in the production process: clay, sand, minerals

Are common specifications ceramic elements:

  • durability - lasts at least 50 years without loss of aesthetic properties;
  • moisture resistance - do not react to the presence of moisture;
  • frost resistance - can withstand the temperature of an unheated room, and porcelain tiles and clinker can easily withstand freeze-thaw cycles;
  • fire resistance - unlike polymers, they do not burn and do not emit toxins dangerous to human life;
  • abrasion resistance thanks to modern technologies making elements and applying the design, the appearance does not change over the years.

With the help of ceramic borders for the bathroom, you can emphasize the geometry of the cladding and complement the thematic pattern shown in wall panel, highlight the perimeter of the bowl - that is, the border piece made of ceramics is full-fledged decorative element. Availability various models and rich color palette, existing on modern market, allow you to make the interior harmonious and stylish.

Caring for a smooth shiny coating does not take much time and money: just wipe with a damp sponge and then with a dry cloth. Fresh stains from water and detergents can be easily washed off with ordinary soapy water.

The advantages of ceramic borders also include cost, because along with expensive designer collections, there are economy-class products available to everyone.

Plastic as an inexpensive alternative

If you prefer more economical option, pay attention to plastic analogues. After installation, some of them (traditional design) look like white ceramic borders, and if we talk about all types, we can distinguish three main ones:

  • internal, intended for laying under tiles;
  • external, mounted at the joint after facing work;
  • two-part profile resembling a floor plinth.

When installing a two-part profile, first fix the holder bar, then attach the upper decorative element to it.

If both parts of the structure are installed correctly, the border will fit snugly against the wall and surface of the bathtub, and from an aesthetic point of view it will look very neat and beautiful

The dimensions of the parts are chosen in accordance with the dimensions of the bathtub and the design of the walls. Their width varies - from 30 mm to 50 mm, and the length of the blanks can reach 3 m. Usually you buy 2 pieces of 1.8 m or one 3-meter. Before installation, they must be cut into 2 or 3 working parts. There are caps for the ends, and “stars” for the corners.

Samples of curbs for plastic bathtubs: they differ in size, shape, method of fastening, and may have different colors(more often white or pastel shade - beige, blue, green or pink)

Plastic is inferior to ceramics both in appearance and in strength. Over time, it will have to be replaced, as the surface darkens from water and chemical substances. However, it is quite suitable as temporary protection, and correct installation fully fulfills its main function.

Self-adhesive border tape

An elastic border in the form of a tape is the most a budget option. It is made of 150-200 micron thick PVD, a flexible waterproof polymer with butyl adhesive applied to the reverse side. Sold in rolls 3.35 m long, 3 to 6 cm wide.

Border tape does not guarantee 100% tightness and its service life is no more than 2 years, however, its inexpensive cost and ease of gluing have made it popular

Advantages of self-adhesive tape:

  • low cost;
  • possibility to glue it yourself;
  • satisfactory protection (maximum for narrow gaps);
  • resistance to accidental impacts.

Another advantage that distinguishes the tape from other borders is flexibility. Elastic material will be useful for those who did not have time or were unable to perfectly level the walls.

To install the adhesive strip, no additional corner or end elements are needed; if necessary, small cut pieces are sufficient.

Some manufacturers include phytoncides in their border tape material, but this is not enough to protect against mold. If the film does not adhere tightly to the tile, a black coating will appear due to the constant penetration of moisture.

Brief instructions for use:

  • clean the walls and edges of the bathtub from traces of old curb and sealant;
  • wipe the work area with a degreasing compound and dry;
  • fill the wall gap with sealant;
  • cut the required piece of tape;
  • for more effective gluing, heat the tape with a hairdryer;
  • starting from the edge, slowly tear off the protective strip and glue the border in small “portions” - 10-15 cm each, try not to stretch the tape;
  • leave a small supply of material in the corner and continue gluing;
  • cut off at the end.

Then finish the corners: cut the remaining folds in the middle, remove the excess pieces, and if there is a gap, cover it with a small piece of tape. There is a second option - before gluing, cut the strip into the required pieces, cut the corner ends at an angle of 45º and start gluing from the corner. Over time, some areas may peel off prematurely; use silicone sealant to repair.

Bath Curb Installation Instructions

Let's look at the procedure for installing plastic and ceramic borders in more detail, since it is a little more complicated than gluing tape. First, make your choice and do not forget to follow the rules of interior design: economical PVC is not suitable for a room with expensive cladding, and exclusive ceramics do not combine with budget tiles or plastic panels.

Ceramic corner installation technology

If there are no corner elements in the tile collection, select similar style and color pieces from other collections or take a universal one white version. The total length of the elements must coincide with the length of the areas of contact between the bathtub and the walls (taking into account the “stars”). We recommend adding one detail in case of breakdown.

To avoid cutting out corners from pieces of border, try to find a set that includes either three-sided concave “stars” or elements with diagonal ends

For installation on a wall, in addition to the border, you will need tile adhesive, waterproof grout, sealant, spatula and sponge. You should start by preparing the base - removing old material, washing and drying. Then we perform the following steps:

  • we fill the gap with a material that ensures tightness (sealant is suitable for a narrow gap, polyurethane foam is suitable for a wide gap);
  • prepare the tile adhesive strictly according to the instructions;
  • We begin laying the elements from the corner: spread glue on the back surface and carefully press it to the base;
  • We leave a small space between the individual parts - as when laying tiles;
  • if the last element is longer than necessary, cut off the excess fragment with a grinder or carefully bite it off with pliers;
  • let it dry for a day, and the next day we fill all the cracks with grout, immediately removing the residue with a damp sponge.

If there is no corner “asterisk”, cut out a similar part from a straight blank. Instead, you can have two corner parts cut at an angle of 45º, according to type ceiling plinth. To make the edges of the cut fragments look neat and natural, we grind them.

When filling the wall gap with sealant, use a special gun - this way the material will be used more efficiently and the result will look neater

If the bathtub is already installed and the wall is tiled, the ceramic corner can be fixed in a simpler way - by placing it on “liquid nails”, filling the gaps with sealant.

Installation of plastic plinth

PVC skirting boards are less reliable, but no less popular than ceramic products. And although they do not have sufficient strength and wear out faster, their attractive appearance and affordable price become the decisive point when purchasing.

In addition, they are convenient for quick installation if repairs need to be completed within a short period of time. Consider the option of installing a bathtub border on tiles.

So, the installation of a polymer border consists of several stages:

  • purchase and preparation of necessary materials and tools;
  • cleaning the base - the edge of the bathtub and the adjacent tiles;
  • protection of surfaces not involved in the procedure;
  • sealing the gap between the wall and the bathroom;
  • gluing plastic elements.

To clean the surfaces, use a construction knife, sandpaper, hard sponge. The most difficult thing to get rid of is the remnants of “liquid” nails: they are usually removed with a knife and construction hair dryer. We treat the surface alternately with an antiseptic and a degreaser (acetone, alcohol solution or white spirit), let it dry or speed up the process with a hairdryer.

You can fight against mold with folk remedies("Whiteness" ammonia, vinegar, soda) or household disinfectants (“Anti-mold”, “Domestos”-universal spray)

Next, we prepare the plastic strips: we cut them to the length of the sides, and make 45° cuts at the corner ends (if there are no ready-made corners). Using masking tape, cover the surfaces around working area so as not to later scrape off the mounting foam, “liquid nails” or sealant from the enamel or tile.

Before installing the planks, it is necessary to seal the gap hermetically so that water, even if it penetrates under the curb, does not leak onto the floor. For narrow gaps, silicone sealant or conventional tile grout, for wide – polyurethane foam. Do not forget that the volume of foam after application can increase 3 times. The foam is porous, so it needs to be leveled: cut construction knife and cover with grout.

The main stage is gluing the PVC skirting board. A special adhesive-based sealant, aquarium glue, or “liquid nails” are suitable as a fixing material. Carefully spread the adhesive onto both edges of the plank in a thin continuous layer, place the product in place and lightly press it.

It is easiest to glue narrow plastic corners, sealing which is important in the absence of gaps or with minimal gaps (1-2 mm)

If a little glue comes out, immediately remove it with a sponge or cloth. All that remains is to remove the protective masking tape and check the reliability of operation.

One of the gluing options plastic skirting board for sealant:

Even a beginner can install or glue a ceramic or plastic border home handyman. Video instructions and detailed description procedures will help make your bathtub tight, neat and easy to clean. However, if necessary, contact professional builders: they will help you choose the sealant and cut the ceramics.

Water is one of the main enemies of building materials. No matter how beautiful the decor of the bathroom interior is, if the waterproofing is of poor quality, it will quickly lose its attractiveness. Therefore, many people want to know how to glue a border to a bathtub. Without special materials The joint between the wall and the equipment is difficult to make airtight, which threatens the appearance of mold, mildew and other troubles.

What types of borders are there?

Before you begin, you need to determine the type of border that will be installed in the bathroom.

Depending on the interior decor of the room and personal preferences, you can choose:

    Tape self-adhesive element. It is a polyethylene tape with an adhesive compound applied to one side, ensuring a tight connection to the surface. It is very practical and inexpensive option, produced different widths and various colors. With the help of this material, the problem of how to make a border in the bathroom can be solved very simply. WITH reverse side tape is removable protective layer, and the element is pressed tightly against the wall with one half and against the bathtub with the other. The service life of such decor is very limited.

For initial stage insulation, this option is quite suitable, for example, if you have not yet decided which option is better to use - plastic or ceramic

    Plastic borders. A universal element that can be attached both to and under tiles. There are many options for such parts, differing in size, width, texture and color. The advantages include the relative ease of installation and low cost of materials. Among the disadvantages, limited service life should be noted.

    Ceramic elements. They are corners of various textures, widths and colors, made of ceramics. Very durable, provide reliable waterproofing and have a long service life. However, there are also disadvantages. Often, laying a border in a bathroom will require the work of professionals, since it is quite difficult to do it yourself. In addition, ceramics is a fragile material that, if handled carelessly, can be broken both before and after installation.

Laying the ceramic corner should preferably be carried out at the stage of laying the main tiles

Stages of installation of a plastic element

Before PVC installation borders you need to buy everything necessary materials. IN in this case need to cook required amount decorative stripes, the number of which can be easily calculated by measuring the length and width of the bathtub. In addition to these, you will need silicone, preferably aquarium grade, liquid nails, masking tape and a construction gun.

  1. Proper preparation of the base. It consists of thoroughly cleaning the edge of the bathtub and the wall adjacent to it from dirt and fine dust. At the end of the work, you can wipe the surface with a cloth soaked in a bleach solution and dry the base thoroughly.
  2. Using a construction gun, the gap between the wall surface and the edge of the equipment is closed with sealant, and then thoroughly dried.
  3. To avoid damage to the enamel, the edge of the bathtub is closed masking tape.
  4. Using a construction gun, liquid nails are applied to the base on which the curb is laid and pressed as tightly as possible with one edge against the wall and the other against the bathtub. At this stage, it is best to get someone’s help, since the reliability of adhesion and the service life of the border depend on how firmly the tape is pressed.
  5. Any glue that may appear from under the plate is carefully removed. The joints of the curbs are additionally insulated with sealant.

Ceramic corner laying technology

Some people are hesitant to choose ceramics because they don’t know how to lay a border in the bathroom so that it is correct and beautiful. The work can be entrusted to professionals, but if you wish, it is quite possible to do it yourself. Before starting work, you need to prepare the required number of ceramic blanks. Their number is calculated based on their length and width of the bath, with a margin in case of possible damage or trimming. In addition to straight elements, you will also need corner elements, sealant, waterproof tile adhesive and grout.

The actual installation of the border on the bathtub includes the following steps:

    1. Preparing the base. Dirt and dust must be removed and the base itself must be well dried.
    2. Seal the gap between the bathtub and the wall. If it is small, it will be enough to treat the joint with silicone. Wider cracks are pre-foamed, after which the seam is processed and dried.
    3. The tile adhesive is diluted in accordance with the instructions attached to it, then, using a spatula, applied to the back side of the border, laid on Right place and sticks. The adjacent parts are laid as tightly as possible to avoid gaps between them.
    4. Corners are formed using special corner elements. To fit them, the edge of two straight parts is cut off at an angle of 45°. This operation is performed using a grinder with diamond blade, but you can also use pliers. A cutting line is drawn on the part and the pieces are carefully “bited off” with the tool until the desired configuration is obtained, after which the resulting cut is polished.
    5. The next day, the laid borders are filled with water to better secure the adhesive.

Silicone sealant or special moisture-resistant grout eliminates small transitions and gaps between the tiles and corners.

Ceramic bath borders are available in the form of straight and corner elements

On tiles ceramic border much easier to install. The work is carried out similarly to the case with plastic plates.

The elements are glued using any moisture-resistant glue, most often using liquid nails. The parts are pressed firmly against the base until the glue “sticks.”

The joint between the bathtub and the wall is not only unsightly, but also potentially dangerous in terms of the appearance of dampness, mold and mildew. It must be sealed with special elements. The material from which they are made depends on how to stick the border on the bathtub. No matter what decor is chosen, the sealed joint will delight you with its appearance and good performance characteristics.

If this is not taken into account, then fungus and mold will constantly form in the bathroom. To avoid such troubles, in this article we will look at how to glue a ceramic border to a bathtub made of different materials.

For people who appreciate solidity and reliability, borders made of ceramics and stone were developed that fit perfectly into the interior of bathrooms. Although it is customary to entrust this work to specialists, it is quite possible to glue the corner and border yourself.

It is important to consider the following points:

  • Dimensions of sanitary tank and bathroom. These parameters will affect the scale of the borders. For example, if you have a small bathroom, then choose a low and narrow border, visually enlarging the bathroom.
  • Choosing the texture and color of the tiles. The border can be either smooth or textured, having concave and convex shapes.

But such borders must have the same texture and color scheme, in harmony with the plumbing of the entire bathroom.

The required number of elements for a ceramic border is not difficult to determine. You just need to carry out some activities:

  1. Using a tape measure, measure all sides of the bathroom touching the wall, then add up all the results.
  2. Divide the resulting amount by the length of one unit of the product, rounding up to the nearest whole amount.
  3. Add up to 10% to the resulting number of borders (if breakages and damage occur), usually this is no more than four units of a ceramic module.

When installing a ceramic border you will be helped by:

  • ceramic modules;
  • laser level;
  • waterproof tile adhesive or liquid nails;
  • silicone sealant (containing components that prevent the development of fungi and mold);
  • mounting gun (for silicone sealant);
  • emery block;
  • rubber spatulas;
  • Bulgarian;
  • diamond discs;
  • pliers;
  • stationery knife;
  • masking tape;
  • grout.

Perhaps all of the listed tools will not suit you, but if you are doing this work for the first time, then the prepared materials and tools will help avoid unnecessary delays in work.

Initially, the surface is cleaned of various contaminants and remnants of old ceramics. Next, the edge of the sanitary container is degreased with a solvent, after which it is disinfected with chlorine. By the end preparatory work The entire perimeter of the bathtub must be dried and covered with masking tape around the edges.

Installation of ceramic tile borders before wall cladding is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. Using a construction gun, carefully, without pausing, fill the cracks between the bathtub and the wall with sealant. It is better to use silicone sealant designed for aquariums.
  2. Use a rubber spatula (or fingers moistened with water) to even out the layer of sealant as much as possible, thereby preventing moisture from getting between the seams. If the gap is larger than 0.5 cm, then fill such seams with foam.
  3. While the sealant or foam hardens, you need to prepare the adhesive for the tiles (it is not advisable to glue it to silicone , because then your borders will not stick tightly to the wall), the consistency should be like thick sour cream.
  4. If the corners (stars) could not be purchased in advance, you can prepare in pairs, four parts with an angle of 45°. To adjust, you will need a grinder with a diamond disc or pliers, biting off unnecessary part, sanding the cut with an emery block.
  5. Use a laser level to adjust the angle to 6–8°. For example, if the width of the curb is 50–60 mm, then its edge adjacent to the wall should be erected 0.5 cm higher. When gluing the border to the wall, start from the corner, work towards the back side of the tile, and apply glue using a spatula. After that, glue is applied to the back of the border using a spatula and the ceramic product is glued to the wall.
  6. The subsequent parts are placed tightly to each other, while removing excess glue by tapping with a rubber mallet.
  7. The surfaces of the borders should be wiped with a damp cloth, allowing it to dry for up to 10 hours.
  8. After about a day, the borders must be filled with water to strengthen the adhesive and left until completely dry, thereby preventing the appearance of microcracks. To close the gap between the curb tiles and the wall, apply silicone or acrylic sealant. They also use tone-on-tone grout based on water-repellent latex, which is used after laying the tiled border.

In order for a ceramic border to look good, you need to leave a gap of the same size using special construction crosses (asterisks). In addition, the ceramic border laid between the wall and the bathtub is folded in pairs, as this will guarantee an accurate fit of the materials, leaving minimal gaps at the joints.

Borders on ceramic tiles

It’s easier to install a border on a tile:

  • First you need to clean the surface of both the ceramic tiles that are already installed and the bathtub. After degreasing them, you can begin gluing the borders.
  • After this, treat the entire surface of the wall with moisture-resistant glue. It's better to take advantage liquid nails.
  • Then, taking the ceramic corner, press it against the wall as hard as possible (until the liquid nails set), since this determines whether moisture will get between the bathtub and the wall or not.
  • Treat all seams with products that prolong the service life of ceramic borders.

When attaching borders to tiles, use a level. Remaining glue should be removed before it dries.

You can also glue other types of borders to the tiles.

This type of border is easy to install and has long term service, but due to the fact that it is fastened with liquid nails or sealants, cracks appear that allow moisture to pass through. Thus, the main function of such borders is decorative. In addition, plastic can be damaged by mechanical stress and may also become dull.

This tape is quick to install and does not require much effort. This is a sealing tape made of polyethylene. Comes in different widths and heights. Although it has a self-adhesive base, it is still necessary to use silicone sealant when installing it.

This type of border quickly loses its attractive appearance, and after some time it needs to be replaced. Suitable for temporary protection against moisture and leaks.

Such borders are made of granite, marble or travertine. Perfectly creating a special atmosphere and sophistication in the bathroom. If your choice fell on this type of material, then the bath itself should be made of the same material as the border, which can last for many decades.

If the work is done efficiently, then such a border will last for many years, without causing any trouble in operation, and also pleasing to the eye with its aesthetic appearance. We hope that the tips and instructions in our article will help you complete the task efficiently.

What are they needed for?

The gap formed between the edge of the font and the wall of the bathroom is one of the most common problems problems that people encounter in the process of renovating a bathroom. Over several decades, many ways to eliminate this nuisance have appeared - from permanently sealing the gap using a tile border to sealing the gap with adhesive curb tape, which is more of a temporary solution.

Those who renovate and decorate the bathroom themselves usually prefer a simpler and reliable way, namely, the use of special corners for the bath. They come in two types - plastic and ceramic. If plastic corners perform mainly a practical function - they prevent water from entering behind the bathtub, then the ceramic plinth also serves decorative purposes. Ceramic edging creates a beautiful transition from the tiles to the bathtub, giving the structure a finished look.

pros

  • A ceramic baseboard for a bathtub looks much more aesthetically pleasing than its plastic counterpart. The variety of colors allows you to choose a shade close to the tile, which will make the transition almost invisible.
  • Ceramics is natural material, which is why it is chosen by connoisseurs of all things natural in the interior.
  • Ceramics tolerates very well high humidity, which is inevitable in the bathroom. Fungus and mold rarely appear on it. Temperature changes are also not scary for her.
  • The ceramic corner does not require special care. You need to clean it with the same detergents, which you use for tiles.
  • The service life of a ceramic bath corner is much longer than that of a similar plastic product.

Minuses

  • Despite the fact that ceramics is a hard material and is difficult to accidentally scratch during use, a strong enough impact can damage the curb.
  • Ceramic corners are completely non-ductile, so they cannot be used to seal indirect gaps (for example, if the bathtub is of an irregular shape).
  • Skirting for a ceramic bath is a more expensive option than plastic corner. However, the price is justified, because such a product lasts much longer.

Types and sizes

When you go to a hardware store, you will find three types of ceramic bath corners.

  • "Pencil". This option is suitable for sealing the thinnest gaps. He has cylindrical shape, sometimes with several edges. Colors may vary, including metallic effect. The length is 20 cm and the width is 15 mm. It is also used as a border for walls and floors, dividing the room into zones.
  • “Corner” is the most popular type of plinth; When people talk about a bath corner, this is what they usually mean. It has a triangular cross-section, which allows you to insert one part directly into the gap, and the other two to install on the edge of the bathtub and on the wall. Ceramic corners can be white or colored, plain or patterned. Standard size– 20x5.5 cm and 25x5.5 cm.
  • “Frieze” is a wide decorative border, which is most often used to decorate bathroom walls. However, some people install it as a bath nook. It should be noted that working with this element requires some construction skills, since it is laid according to the same principle as tile. Dimensions of this type borders may be different.

Along with the ceramic corner, do not forget to purchase additional elements - plugs for the edges and stars for joining at the corners. These parts are usually sold as a set, but you can also purchase them separately - finding the right color and size is not difficult.

The ceramic corner is installed on the bathtub using two different methods.

How to install on tiles?

The first method is usually considered the simplest, so it is usually used by beginners in the construction business. In this case, the border is glued directly to the tiles.

  • Clean the edges of the bathtub and adjacent parts of the wall from dirt, degrease and dry.
  • Treat the seam with a sealing compound and let it dry.
  • If necessary, cut the ceramic border into pieces the right size. In this case, you need to cut from the back side, and clean up chips on ceramics grinder or sandpaper.
  • Experts recommend using liquid nails for ceramic corners. Apply adhesive composition on the back of the curb, place it on the gap and press firmly for a few seconds.
  • Upon completion of work, treat the joints with transparent sealant. silicone based for the bathroom.

Installation under tiles

Professionals prefer to lay a ceramic bath border before the tiles. This method is considered more labor-intensive; it takes more time and building materials. However, the result is worth it - the border turns out to be very beautiful and durable.

  • First you need to prepare the walls for ceramic tiles: remove old finishing materials, level with plaster or plasterboard panels, prime.
  • Then you need to install the bath. Use a level for this, but do not forget to provide the slope necessary for normal water drainage.
  • Now the gap can be filled with sealing compound. It is best to use silicone-based sealant. Before you begin, seal the gap on both sides with masking tape - this will protect the bathtub enamel and ceramic tiles from sealant and glue.
  • While the sealant is still wet, quickly smooth it out rubber spatula or with a finger lubricated with soap (don’t worry, the composition washes off the skin well).
  • Prepare tile adhesive according to instructions.
  • Apply the required amount of glue to the back of the corner and press it to the gap.
  • Insert plastic crosses between the border elements - the same ones you will use when laying tiles.
  • After the gap is sealed, you can begin tiling the walls. Upon completion of the work, the seams between the tiles and the border elements should be sanded. Use grout of the same color for this.

Lifetime

The service life of a ceramic bath corner is the same as that of other ceramic products used for wall cladding in the bathroom. According to experts, high-quality tiles, laid in accordance with all the rules, with proper care, “live” from 30 to 50 years. Of course, during such a period of time, changes will occur in your bathroom many times, because many people prefer to do major renovation at least once every 10-15 years. Therefore, you don’t have to worry that the ceramic corner will become unusable before you want to change the interior of the bathroom.
