1 Applying the base layer.
Prepare the wall for painting, fill all holes and cracks. Apply the base coat with a roller and leave to dry.
2 Marking stripes.
Measure the width of the wall (or the item you want to decorate with a striped pattern) and mark its middle. Hang a plumb line from the ceiling to this point. With chalk, mark several points on the wall along the plumb line up to the mark. This line will be the middle of your first stripe. Next, mark the strips along the entire wall, using a plumb line to check that they are strictly vertical.
3.Finishing corners.
As you work from the middle of the wall to the corners, try to fit a full strip on each side. You may have to slightly change the width of some stripes, but so that it is not noticeable.

When marking stripes on the walls, make sure that they are symmetrically located near windows, fireplaces, etc. To do this, mark a strip in the center and then apply the rest of the stripes.
Below is a description of how to make vertical two-color stripes using a sponge. It will also suit horizontal stripes. Their marking is carried out from the ceiling using a level. Marks are made in several places for the first strip, then they are connected using a ruler. Using this first line as a guide, draw the rest.

4.Gluing the tape.
Use masking tape to hide any gaps that should remain unpainted. Apply the edge of the tape along the points, pulling and pressing it so that there are no wrinkles. If the strip is wide, cover only both edges.
5.Applying paint.
Following the chosen sample, carefully paint some of the strips with a sponge in one color, lightly grabbing adhesive tape. Wash the sponge well, then apply a second paint to the remaining unpainted strips.

Selection of decor

Before you start painting, select the decor. It is desirable that the background stripes were the same width as the camouflage tape. Usually it is 2.5 cm. If you choose a design similar to the one shown here, where there is a gap between the painted strips, you need to seal only this gap, and leave the areas under the strips free. Draw a fragment of decor on large sheet paper and color. Attach the sheet to the wall to evaluate the result.
Combine stripes different widths and colors. What a harmonious combination of green mint and lavender! These strips are applied with a sponge over white background. So, 4 cm wide green stripe, 2.5 cm gap, 8 cm wide lavender stripe, 2.5 cm gap, 4 cm wide green stripe,
6 cm gap.
6 Remove tape.
When the paint is dry to the touch, carefully remove the tape. If the paint of the base layer is removed, carefully use sharp knife peel off the tape so that the paint no longer comes off. Later, use a brush to paint over these defects. Let the wall dry thoroughly and erase any chalk marks.

Checkered pattern

The checkered pattern is done several times more complex than a drawing striped, and can be done not in two, but in three (four) colors.

Develop a sketch of the future drawing and draw it on paper, and figure out the sequence of alternating strips of tape;

mark the future drawing on the wall with a pencil;
stick strips of tape in the form of a “lattice” to apply the first paint of the design;
apply the first paint between the strips of tape;
let the paint dry completely;

remove the strips of tape from the wall and get a checkered pattern of the same color;
cover the painted cells vertically and horizontally with strips of tape;
Apply a second paint between the strips of tape;
let the paint dry completely;

remove the horizontal strips of tape;
Apply strips of adhesive tape to the places where the adhesive tape was applied when applying the first paint:
Apply a third paint between the strips of tape;
let the paint dry completely.

If you now remove the strips of tape, you will have a checkered wall of three colors of your choice, with the fourth being the original wall color. With a little imagination, it is not difficult to develop a layout of tape strips to obtain a fourth color different from the original wall color, or a layout of tape strips of different widths to obtain a checkered pattern.
But this work requires pinpoint precision and accuracy, otherwise the boundaries of the color cells will be violated.

One stripe, two stripes

Striped walls are a timeless classic. A stripe on the walls can emphasize the style - classic or vintage, country or pop art. The strip is also relevant for modern interiors. It is especially often chosen when it is necessary to visually adjust the proportions of the room. It is known that a vertical strip visually raises the ceiling, but the room seems narrower. Horizontal stripes visually expand the room, but reduce the height. Diagonal stripes also visually enlarge the room, while visual effect There is no lowering of the ceiling.

To decorate walls with stripes, most often they resort to one of two methods: either paste them with striped wallpaper, or paint them with stripes. Painting walls with stripes has an important advantage: choose wallpaper with stripes desired color and the required width is not so easy, but achieving the desired paint color will not be difficult (color paints are used for this). The width of the strip when painting can also be any.

How to paint walls with stripes?

Stage one: planning

First you need to choose the width, color and location of the stripes. It should be borne in mind that multi-colored stripes will make the room colorful and bright.

To avoid this, you can make stripes of the same color, but in different shades: for example, blue and light blue, and lilac, etc.

You can take one color, but use different colors: matte and glossy.

These single-color options are suitable for both classic and modern monochrome interiors.

The stripes can be two colors or three, or maybe even more.

If multi-colored stripes alternate with a stripe of the same color (base), then everything is done at once. It’s just that each stripe is immediately painted in its own color. If stripes of different colors are adjacent not only to the base one, but also to each other, then additional painting steps will be required (more on this below).

It is necessary to measure the lengths of the walls that will be painted and divide them by the desired width of the stripes. Will there be an integer number of stripes for each wall? If not, you can change the planned width of the stripes (for example, 10 cm was originally planned, but for an equal number of stripes they can be made 10.25 cm each) or make one of the stripes in the most inconspicuous corner a little larger or smaller than the others.

If desired, the width of the stripes can be made different: for example, cream stripes are wide, and red stripes are narrower.

Today, wide striped walls are in fashion. Its width ranges from approximately 10 to 30 cm.

On a piece of paper, you can make a plan for the future location of the strips on the wall, so as not to get confused later.

Stage two: painting the walls in the base color

The base color is the color of one of the stripes. The base color should be the lighter stripe. If, for example, you paint the walls with cream and blue stripes, then the base color should be cream.

If you are going to paint walls with stripes of the same color, but with different textures (matte and glossy), you should use matte paint as the base paint.

First, the walls are painted in a base color. If the walls were previously painted with darker paint, you need to either remove it using special solvents from a hardware store, or paint it first dark walls white paint, and then after it has completely dried, apply the base color.

After applying the base color paint, you need to wait until it dries completely. Usually the paint packaging will indicate how long it takes to dry. If it is water-based paint, you can start creating stripes the very next day after applying the base coat.

Stage three: measurements and markings

Now you need to arm yourself with a construction tape measure, a spirit level and with a simple pencil or chalk. We begin measuring from the dark corner from above, drawing lines down (if they are vertical) or from corner to corner (if horizontal). A spirit level will help make the stripes even.

Stage four: apply masking tape

Having drawn the lines, we proceed to gluing the masking tape.

How to paint walls with stripes? Using masking tape

The tape is glued inside those stripes that will remain in the base color!

In this case, it must be glued exactly along the line marked on the wall so that the line remains unglued.

This line will be filled in if it is drawn with a pencil. If the markings were made with chalk, after applying the masking tape, the lines should be erased with a dry cloth.

Each glued tape needs to be smoothed - for this you can use regular plastic card or a special ironing iron. This is necessary so that the tape tightly covers the wall and paint does not get under it.

Don't forget to apply masking tape to the joints of the wall and ceiling, as well as the wall and floor, thereby limiting the area of painting and protecting from painting those surfaces that do not need to be painted.

Stage five: coloring

If the stripes are wide, you can paint with a small roller. If they are narrow, you will have to work with a brush. One coat of paint is usually sufficient if the base and second colors are similar. If completely different, it might be worth planning two coats. The second layer is applied a few hours after the first. But in order to paint the walls with stripes with high quality, it is better to get by with one layer.

If, in addition to the base one, there are not two, but more colors, then each stripe is immediately painted in its own color.

You need to paint carefully, going over the masking tape so that there are no unpainted areas at the joints of the strips. The paint is applied from top to bottom.

Stage six: removing the masking tape

The tape should be removed almost immediately after applying the paint (unless, of course, you are planning a second coat). If you wait until it dries completely and only then remove the tape, the paint may peel off in places. Therefore, you need to remove the tape no later than an hour after applying the paint, or you can immediately after finishing the painting job. You can remove the tape from bottom to top or top to bottom, carefully and slowly.

How to paint walls with stripes of three colors?

If you are planning stripes of several colors, and they are adjacent to each other, you can do this: simply stick the tape on the base color, then paint each strip a different color, and then remove the tape. You'll get stripes different color with dividing strips of a base color, having a width equal to the width of the tape.

You can work using a different algorithm so that there are no dividing stripes:

1. Applying base coat

The lightest tone is chosen for the base layer, and the darkest of the three colors is chosen as the third color, applied last.

How to paint walls with stripes and more: use masking tape and imagination as assistants

Above we looked at classic version painting walls with stripes. But, armed with masking tape, you can get really creative with painting the walls.

If you want thin stripes on the wall, first paint the walls a base color (the color of the future stripes). Then stick the tape where your stripes will be located, and after that just paint the wall with a roller. All that remains is to remove the tape - and the wall will instantly turn from a plain color into a striped one.

In this case, the tape can be placed in any way: vertically, horizontally, herringbone (zigzag), diagonally, parallel or perpendicular.

If you stick the tape perpendicularly, you can paint the wall with squares and diamonds. The technology is the same as described above.

Striped walls

Apply the first coat of paint in the desired color. Let the paint dry completely.

Using a pencil and level, mark the first strip with light vertical lines. Place masking tape between the lines and press the edges firmly to ensure good adhesion.

Measure from the first stripe and draw parallel lines for the remaining stripes of the first color. Use a level to draw vertical lines. Apply masking tape.

Remove the masking tape from the painted strips. Repeat the process for additional colors.

Apply first coat of low to medium gloss latex enamel required color. Let the paint dry. Measure and mark vertical and horizontal lines for the rows of the first color. Let the paint dry and then remove the tape.
Apply masking tape to create vertical stripes. Using the same color and in the same way as for the horizontal stripes, paint over the vertical stripes. Let the paint dry and then remove the tape.
Draw horizontal and vertical stripes with lines, which will be painted in a different color. Repeat steps 2-4.

Repeat this operation to paint horizontal and vertical stripes of all other colors.
