How young sculptors learn to create three-dimensional images

The sculptor’s task is to create a three-dimensional image from solid or plastic materials (from metal to wax). Sculpture occupies a prominent place in the history of culture: almost all ancient peoples left behind works of this type of art. As a rule, sculptors created sculptures of gods and goddesses - religious beliefs played a huge role in the lives of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Chinese, Indians and other peoples.

Over the course of centuries and years, sculpture, of course, ceased to play a purely religious significance. Their own national schools appeared, and performance techniques became more complex. Many sculptors have left their bright mark on world art. In the 20th century in Russia, sculpture, as a rule, was dependent on the general direction in culture, and the term socialist realism, in addition to architecture, cinema, literature, also related to the activities of sculptors.

Nowadays, not only adults are interested in sculpture, but also children, who can learn skills from masters who have extensive experience in this activity. For example, children can make their own solution, pour it into molds, and at the end they will receive a figurine. Of course, in childhood It is assumed to work with soft, pliable materials - wax and clay. By doing sculpting, children develop their creative imagination, motor skills, creative thinking, for some this is an excellent basis for entering universities.

How to prepare clay for sculpture

Before you begin, you will need to prepare the clay. Do this with a reserve: it is better to take more of this material than to experience a lack of it. It is prepared quite simply: dry raw materials need to be poured into some container (pan, box, etc.) and filled with water so that tubercles protrude from it. After 3-4 days the clay will be ready for modeling. When you begin to remove the material, make sure that the relief remains uneven and that some of the depressions are “flooded” with water. This is necessary so that the clay has a different consistency - this may well be required by your work.

The sculpture is one of the oldest and the most complex types visual arts.

Unlike painting and graphics, it is three-dimensional, has real volume, lives in space, requires perception from different points of view, under different angles and angles, gradually revealing the artistic image. The types and genres of sculpture are very diverse: monumental, monumental-decorative, easel (portrait and composition), sculpture of small forms, relief, medal art. Each of these types of plastic surgery has its own characteristics and laws, which must be mastered perfectly by students who have chosen this specialty.

Faculty of Sculpture MGAHI named after. IN AND. Surikov is relatively few in number. Every year up to 8 people enter it (on a budgetary basis), many of whom have special training, having graduated from the Moscow Academic Art Lyceum or other secondary art schools educational establishments. Education at the faculty is conducted full-time from the first year for 6 years in two personal workshops, led by outstanding masters of modern plastic art. One of them is Professor Alexander Iulianovich Rukavishnikov, People’s Artist Russian Federation, academician, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, head of the department of sculpture and composition, the other is Professor Mikhail Vladimirovich Pereyaslavets, People's Artist of Russia, full member of the Russian Academy of Arts. As in other departments of our institute, at the Faculty of Sculpture the techniques and methods of teaching students are based on solid foundation academic art school with consistent comprehension of the laws of craftsmanship. For a sculptor, it is very important from the very beginning to be able to correctly build the frame of his future work, taking into account its size, weight and the nature of the movement of the planned thing; What is needed is a deep, thorough study of classical drawing, copying of ancient originals of sculpture and its individual parts, comprehension of the structure and plasticity of the human body and work with nudes, thoughtful construction of a composition based on a close study of reality, which, in fact, is the key to creating an artistic image. A mandatory program requirement is knowledge, understanding and practical use creative heritage of leading art schools from ancient times to the present day. The educational and creative tasks set for students at the Faculty of Sculpture are always new, interesting, and aimed at maximizing the development of students’ abilities. This is evidenced by the results of frequent viewings at the department, viewings by the rector, the Academic Council of the Institute together with the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, at which the works of students of sculpture workshops, which invariably receive high marks, are discussed.

The glorious traditions of the luminaries of Russian sculpture and brilliant teachers such as A.T. Matveev, M.B. Manizer, N.V. Tomsky, L.E. Kerbel, constantly developing and enriching itself in accordance with the requirements of the time, is maintained to this day. Today, both in Russia and in many countries near and far abroad, students of P.I. Bondarenko, M.F. Baburina, O.K. Komov, wonderful artists, whose works have long and rightfully belonged to the classics of Russian culture of the twentieth century.

A.I. Rukavishnikov and M.V. Pereyaslavets studied with Lev Efimovich Kerbel, with whom they maintained personal and creative relationships until the end of his life. Now behind the shoulders of L.E.’s beloved pets. Karbala has a great path in art and teaching. So different in creativity and worldview, A.I. Rukavishnikov and M.V. Pereyaslavets, saving individual characteristics own views and preferences, created an integral, logically constructed system vocational training and education of a creative sculptor.
A.I. Rukavishnikov is an artist of multifaceted talent, a bold innovator in art, and is fluent in the laws of the academic school. His sculpture is distinguished by amazing lightness, freedom, and culture of modeling; he knows how to instill these qualities in his students.

M.V. Pereyaslavets is one of the most gifted and creative active masters contemporary sculpture, mainly working in the field of monumental and easel sculpture. The desire for maximum clarity and harmonious simplicity of compositional solutions, for the creation of sensually full-blooded plastic images - distinctive properties his creativity, attracting more and more new students to his workshop.

Among the teachers of the Faculty of Sculpture, experienced, passionate about their work, talented artists, there is a friendly, friendly atmosphere that has a positive impact on students. People's Artist of the Russian Federation, Professor Nikolai Ivanovich Borovskoy and Honored Artist of Russia, Candidate of Art History, Professor Gugo Matveevich Manizer teach drawing in junior courses; People's Artist of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Professor Sergei Nikolaevich Prisekin and People's Artist of the Russian Federation, Professor Nikolai Vladimirovich Kolupaev teaches drawing to third-year students. Assistant sculptors in the workshop of A.I. Rukavishnikov is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Associate Professor Andrei Vladimirovich Balashov and Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, senior lecturer Dolmogombetov Galim Zhiembaevich - dean of the faculty. In the workshop of M.V. Pereyaslavts sculpture is taught by People's Artist of the Russian Federation, Professor Vladimir Ivanovich Koshelev and Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Associate Professor Alexander Vasilyevich Tarasenko.

Each academic year ends with a summer internship, which essentially continues the educational process. Under the guidance of teachers, students travel to St. Petersburg and its environs, ancient city Russia Pereslavl-Zalessky, at the Dacha of creativity named after. D.N. Kardovsky, where they work independently, trying their hand at mastering various materials (wood, stone, etc.), looking for new compositional solutions and artistic means. Exhibitions of work from summer internships, which are regularly held at the institute, are always interesting for the entire university staff.

Today, when schools where they trained craftsmen (formers, enlargers, foundry workers, etc.) have practically disappeared, it is necessary to familiarize students with artistic production already at the institute. During the senior years of the Faculty of Sculpture, students undergo bronze casting practice at a factory in Zhukovsky. I would also like to use it more actively belonging to the Russian Academy of Arts educational and production base "Foundry Dvor" in St. Petersburg, created on the initiative and with the active participation of the President of the Academy Z.K. Tsereteli.

Some graduates of the Faculty of Sculpture, who over the years of study have become high-class specialists, together with their mentors R.I. Rukavishnikov, M.V. Pereyaslavets, R.V. Tarasenko and other famous masters participated in the execution of a responsible order - the recreation of the sculptural decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

At the Faculty of Sculpture, in connection with the opening of the Department of Restoration of Paintings and Sculpture, three students have been working for the second year, mastering general patterns, theoretical and methodological problems of this difficult and necessary profession.

Monumental sculpture is one of the most mass species art, as a rule, it is associated with architecture, urban or natural environment. Now that the Faculty of Architecture operates at MGAHI, it is possible for senior students - sculptors and architects - to assign general tasks to complete sketches of monuments, design urban areas, ensembles of squares, recreation areas, etc. Experience and specific skills in solving these important tasks in demand in modern life, received by students while still at the university, will help them gain confidence in further professional work.

In the sixth year, students complete thesis- completed piece of art, which is submitted for defense to the State Certification Commission. In these works, the authors appear as mature professional masters with their own individual perception of the world, fluently wielding a rich arsenal expressive means sculptures.

Candidate of Art History, Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation, Head of the Scientific and Methodological Department for Art Education and Aesthetic Education of the Russian Academy of Arts V.B. Minina
