DIY children's bed: drawings, photos, manufacturing materials

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of good sleep for a child’s health. That’s why it’s so important to get a comfortable and safe bed. By the way, you don’t have to buy furniture to decorate a child’s bedroom, because you can assemble it yourself. Read on to learn how to do this correctly.

Elements of a baby cot

Before we start making a children's bed, let's decide what distinguishes it from its adult counterparts. Among the distinctive features:

  • Dimensions. Mattresses for children's beds are shorter and narrower than their adult counterparts (see table standard sizes sleeping mattresses).
  • Number and location of beds. The bed in children's furniture is not made double, more often it is a single design. If you need to accommodate two children, the structure is assembled in two tiers.
  • Operational safety. Quality furniture for a children's room does not have sharp corners or traumatic parts.
  • Decorative design. Furniture for a children's room should not be boring and visually attractive to the child.

Let's summarize the points listed. A children's bed is made from the same elements as its adult counterparts, that is, it uses a supporting frame around the perimeter, mattress holder slats, a mattress, etc. But all these elements have smaller dimensions and are made of environmentally friendly materials.

Elements in the design of children's furniture are rounded at the corners and painted in bright colors. An important point is that to ensure safety, the design of most children's beds uses high sides. The use of such elements is mandatory in cribs for children under 3 years of age.

Deciding on the model

The choice of children's bed design determines:

  • Children's age. The dimensions of the bed depend on age - the older the child, the larger the bed.
  • Amount of children. A single-tier bed is built for one child, and as the number of children increases, the number of tiers increases.
  • Gender of the child. The gender of a child affects decorative design furniture.
  • Features of the room. In a spacious nursery you can install several single-tier beds, but in a cramped room the structure is built in several tiers.
  • Project budget. Material capabilities determine what materials the furniture can be assembled from.

Basic details of wooden beds

The design of a single single-tier children's bed consists of a supporting frame, which is assembled from boards and encircles the product around the perimeter. At the corners of the supporting frame there are vertical supports that serve as legs and as side holders.

At the top of the supports there are horizontal boards - sides. Sideboards for older children are installed on three sides of the bed, and for children younger age four at a time.

Along the inner perimeter of the frame there are slats that will hold the mattress. At the bottom of the bed there is free space in which there are drawers for storing linen and bedding.

Design bunk bed repeats the design of a single-tier structure with the difference that two beds are supported on the same supports. To make it easy to climb onto the second tier, the design uses ladder. To ensure safety, the side of the second tier is located on four sides.

Materials

Illustrations Materials and their description

Solid wood lumber. Boards, timber, furniture panels are solid wood, environmentally friendly safe materials, which I primarily recommend for assembling children's furniture.

Metal. Children's beds can be assembled from rolled metal, provided that welds will be neat.

Particle board(chipboard). Chipboard - not the best option in respect of environmental safety. But because affordable price Laminated chipboard is still the most popular and in demand material.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB). From the point of view of environmental safety, OSB is worse than chipboard, since the formaldehyde content in these boards is higher. If OSB is used to make furniture, it must be provided that the surface is covered with several continuous layers of varnish.

Fiberboard– auxiliary material . Fiberboard(Fibreboard) is used as a construction material, which is used to line the bottom of drawers or cover the top of the bed.

About fasteners

If you are making a bed from lumber or particle boards, for fastening you will need confirmations - universal fasteners in the form of screws with an increased thread pitch. In order to provide greater strength to the confirmations, you can use dowels - wooden choppers that are driven into pre-drilled holes.

You will also need L-shaped corner perforated plates and self-tapping screws to secure them.

Available for sale corner mounts regular and reinforced with scarves on the fold, as shown in the photo. When choosing, we give preference to reinforced plates, as they are stronger and more reliable.

About accessories

A children's bed is a simple structure, where the list special fittings limited by guides for tilting the front wall, pendulum mechanism for rocking cradles, etc. At self-assembly you can limit yourself to rollers for drawers, as well as hinges and latches for the folding front wall.

Necessary tool

The choice of tool depends on what the furniture will be assembled from. To work with lumber you need basic set carpentry equipment, including drill, screwdriver, jigsaw, router, 5 mm hex key, measuring tool. You will also need free place, on which it will be possible to cut necessary details and then put them together.

Wooden bed

After we have decided on the choice of materials, fastening hardware and fittings, we will consider how to assemble it with our own hands wooden furniture for a children's room. As an example, I offer instructions for assembling a typical bunk bed shown in the drawing.

The structure assembled according to the proposed scheme is durable, neat and at the same time budget-friendly in terms of materials. The most important thing is that such a bed is not difficult to make yourself, even if such work is being done for the first time.

Illustrations Making a crib with drawers

Materials and tools. To assemble this bed you need pine or beech boards with a section of 35×100 mm and 25×100 mm. To process wood you will need Miter saw, router, drill, confirmation wrench, screwdriver.

Cutting out the details. From a 35×100 board we cut 4 pieces 1900 mm long, 4 pieces 1810 mm long and 4 pieces 800 mm long. On workpieces 1810 mm long we make grooves 35×100 mm as shown in the photo.

We make legs (supports). As shown in the photo, we attach transverse crossbars into the grooves of the vertical supports, which will be the head and foot of the bed on the upper and lower tier.

Assembling the bed and installing the ladder. After the end units of the bed are ready, we attach the longitudinal boards and safety barriers.

We install slats—mattress holders—in the inner perimeter of the upper and lower beds. We assemble a ladder from a board and a rounded block if round timber no steps can be made from boards.

Installation of drawer fronts. We assemble the boxes from boards as a rectangular frame, with a bottom attached at the bottom.

For convenience and safety of operation, we make the fronts of the drawers without handles with recesses, as shown in the photo. At the bottom of the boxes we attach roll-out rollers.

Let's take a closer look at the operations you will encounter during assembly.

Illustrations Assembly process details

Screwing in confirmations. To screw in the confirmat, we drill a hole - for this we use a drill with a special cutter. If there is no special drill, drill a hole the length of the confirmation and a diameter of 3 mm. Then we expand the edge of the hole made to 5 mm to a depth of 5 mm and get a recess under the head of the confirmation.

We screw the confirmat so that its head is completely recessed into the wood. Subsequently mounting hole will be closed with a decorative plug.

Holes for dowels. To install the dowel, holes of the appropriate diameter are drilled in the parts to be connected, most often 6 or 8 mm. The depth of the hole in each of the connected parts is 15 or 20 mm (depending on the length of the dowel).

The dowel is driven into the wood with or without preliminary application of glue.

Making the base for the mattress. For installation orthopedic mattress You can purchase ready-made lamellas, like those shown in the photo, or you can cut the same pieces of boards yourself.

A barrier is made from a block along the inner perimeter of the bed, onto which prepared lamellas are laid.

The lamella base is suitable for hard mattresses. If the mattress is soft, the base is made not of lamellas, but of a solid plywood sheet.

Installation of swing facades. As an alternative drawers You can install hinged fronts at the bottom of the bed. Installation of facades is carried out using conventional adjustable hinges.

Decorating the bed. Finished furniture can be treated with stain and varnished if it is wooden. In other cases, painting is the preferred option.

Alternatively, a bed made of wood or chipboard can be upholstered with fabric pre-pasted with foam rubber.

Homemade bed-car

Illustrations Assembling the car bed

Support frame. From furniture board going rectangular frame- box. Gaps are cut out from one of the ends of the box using a jigsaw to imitate a radiator grille, headlights, etc.

Imitation windshield . Openings are made on the sides of the body through which the child will enter the structure. At the distance at which the hood is expected to end, we attach a frame assembled from slats.

Installing the Drawer Lid. The lid of the bedding box, imitating a hood, is attached to a piano hinge at the front of the bed. At the same stage, the wheel rims are attached to the sides.

Mattress holders. Inside assembled box a plywood sheet is installed on which the mattress is laid.

Primer and painting. After the bed is assembled, the surface is primed and painted.

Considering complex design furniture, for working with paint and varnish materials It is preferable to use a brush. The choice of paint is not important, the main thing is that it is completely dry before use.

Let's sum it up

Now you know how and what to make a children's bed from. If according to the proposed step by step guide If you have any questions, ask them in the comments to the article.

For children, parents always try to choose the best, including furniture, but looking at the completely non-childish prices for wooden beds, or for car beds, boats, etc. You will inevitably wonder whether it is worth buying such a thing for several years... Maybe not, but you can make it yourself. A do-it-yourself children's bed can be assembled from several boards and bars in a few days. Especially complex work or special tools are required. Mostly you need hands and desire.

Wooden bed

This is a regular bed without any tricks. In the presented version it is suitable for average school age and teenagers, but further it can be completed for children from 3 years old (second photo report). Collected from wooden parts(boards and bars). The project can be used as a basis, then adding design ideas.

You can argue about the color, but as a base it’s an excellent option

Materials and tools

Manufacturing does not require any special tools. All that is needed:

The materials needed are:

  • timber - 50*100 mm;
  • board 25*100 mm and 25*75 mm;
  • wood glue;
  • wood putty;
  • sandpaper.

Calculate the number of boards based on the planned dimensions. Requirements for wood are low humidity (not higher than 16%) and the absence of knots or a small number of them.

Making legs

A DIY children's bed begins with making the legs. We cut blanks from 50*100 mm timber - longer for the headboard, shorter for the footboard. You need 4 pieces of each length. We glue the blanks in pairs. We take one, coat it with wood glue, lay the second one, check whether they are aligned evenly, and twist it with self-tapping screws. In principle, you can use 100*100 mm timber and not bother with glue, but the price for it is very high.

We recess the screw heads into the wood, then seal them with wood putty. After drying, sand until smooth ( sandpaper with medium or fine grain).

We also use sandpaper to bring the joint to perfect condition - everything should be even and smooth.

For the backs you will need boards with a groove 25 mm wide. If you have a router, you can make it yourself or turn it in a carpentry shop. You can also buy dowels ready-made; select a drill according to their diameter.

We drill holes for dowels at the ends of the planks with grooves. Determine exactly their distance from the edge - they must be strictly at the same level on all planks.

Also, the holes should be the same depth - half the length of this piece of wood. In order to be able to navigate when drilling, a marker strip is attached to the drill masking tape. It is used to control the depth of the hole.

Assembling the headboard and footboard

From a 25*50 mm board, planks of the same length are cut to fill the headboard and footboard. They are inserted into a groove coated with glue in advance.

We also drill a hole in the leg for dowels. First, we find the middle and draw a line along it (with a pencil). Place the assembled back, align it along the top edge, align the dowels on a line and mark the places where you need to drill holes for them (two at the top, two at the bottom). Pour a little glue into the holes and place the back. It must be planted tightly, without gaps. You can tap with your fist or mallet (do not damage the wood).

We repeat the same operation with the other leg. The not very beautiful joint at the top can be covered with a board, placing it on screws and covering the holes. As a result, this is what happens.

One important point, which concerns gluing parts. While the glue has not hardened, the joints are movable and the parts may become warped. Therefore, having set the angles to 90°, the part is fixed (with clamps or some other way) and left until the glue dries. The work continues after drying, and, as a rule, it begins with sanding the joint that has just been glued.

Making the base for the mattress

We take two boards 50*100 mm long, equal to length mattress (or a couple of centimeters more to make filling more convenient). We install a 25*50 mm plank along the edge using glue and screws. It is 10 cm shorter in length - leave 5 cm on each edge. When screwing the bar, we make sure that the edges are aligned accurately. We drill a hole for each self-tapping screw - close to the edge so that the wood does not burst. In addition, we make a hole of a larger diameter along the cap - they should be hidden.

Since the adhesive connection in in this case fastened tightly, you don’t have to wait for the glue to dry.

From a 25*100 mm board we cut slats to fit the width of the mattress (you can again add 1-2 cm). They are attached to the just made planks with an emphasis. The installation step is 10 cm, for each plank there are 2 screws on each side. A hole is pre-drilled for each self-tapping screw (the diameter of the drill is 1-2 cm less than the diameter of the self-tapping screw), the head should go into the wood.

The holes for fasteners are covered with putty and sanded after drying. Cutouts are made in the outer planks for installing legs.

DIY children's bed: assembly

We finally seal all chips and defects on the visible parts of the bed with putty, and after drying, sand it until smooth. Then we prime and paint it in the chosen color. After painting, all that remains is to connect the backrests and the base for the mattress and we can consider that the children's bed with their own hands is ready.

You can connect the parts using special fittings - brackets and curtains, or simply - by nailing a corner, a block on which to rest assembled shield for a mattress.

Video on the topic

Sooner or later, every young parent is faced with the problem of acquiring children's place sleep. And high quality wooden bed is quite expensive. However, if you get creative and put in enough effort, you can end up with a comfortable sleeping place for your baby. is not something complicated, it is quite possible to make it using ready-made blueprints And photo in the Internet. If you have the tools, some skills and desire, then creating a designer crib with your own hands is a matter of time. Having selected the material, you can cut out the required parts for a fee. It is easy to purchase various plywood, boards, laminated chipboard, ready-made bars and fasteners. The main thing is to take your time and remember that you are working for quality.

It must be remembered that low-quality components cannot be used for a baby crib. They must consist of environmentally friendly materials.

When you decide to start making a baby crib with your own hands, you need to decide on its type:

  1. Baby crib rocking chair.
  2. An original crib, for example, a car crib.

Then prepare necessary tool. Such as: screwdriver, hammer, screwdrivers, jigsaw, pliers, measuring tool and level.

Well, the main thing is to prepare the materials from which, in fact, the crib will be assembled. That is, boards, plywood, blocks of wood. It is important to select high-quality fasteners, due to which all furniture elements are fixed.

The crib must be made from natural materials, and fasteners should be chosen of high quality

When choosing a material, first of all, it is worth considering that a wooden bed is an excellent place where you can gain strength before tomorrow. Quality wood natural, does not cause allergic reactions, does not emit harmful substances in direct sunlight, looks good and is durable. According to most experts, the optimal crib should be made from natural wood.

The most popular type is the classic baby crib, which looks like this:

To make this you need:

  • Sides 85.4 x 134.0 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • Side strips (top) 6.0 x 134.0 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • Headboard and footboard part of the crib () 71.2 x 71.1 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • Bed bottom 130.5 x 71.1 cm – 1 piece;
  • Bottom support (front and rear slats), block 3.2 x 3.2 x 60.0 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • Bottom support (side bars), block 3.2 x 3.2 x 120.0 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • Round wooden rods for side railing, diameter 1.2 cm, length 61.4 cm – 38 pcs.
  • Screws size 4 x 45 mm

When all the details have been prepared and photos and drawings have been studied, you can start assembling the crib with your own hands:

  1. First we make the sides of the crib. We take blanks for them and draw a line, retreating 20 cm from the bottom. The width of the side frame is 6 cm. Having drawn a line for the central part of the side, we proceed to cutting it out (see picture). This can be done, for example, with a jigsaw.
  2. Next we start cutting out the legs. To do this, we make two marks at 15 cm and 11.5 cm and connect them smoothly, making a rounded corner. We also smoothly draw a rounded corner for the inside of the leg, stepping back the width of the leg by 6 cm. Using this principle, we cut out the remaining three legs.
  3. Then, as in the figure below, we mark the position of the first rod of our sidewall. To do this, step back 4.96 cm from the side and mark the edge of the hole of the rod, then step back 1.2 cm (that is, the width of the rod). Then we retreat again 4.96 cm and repeat the steps above along the entire lower frame of the crib. We get 19 equally distributed rods.
  4. Similarly, we measure and drill the same holes for the rods in the upper strips of the side panels.
  5. We fill these holes well with regular PVA glue and insert our wooden fencing rods into them. They should fit tightly. Place the sides on a flat surface until completely dry. Using measuring instruments, for example, a square, straighten the rods again and leave it overnight. It's better to let it be more glue. Excess glue that is squeezed out of the holes can then be easily removed with a slightly dampened cloth.
  6. Pour glue into the holes in the same way. upper slats sides and install them in place. Do not forget to constantly level the structure, wait for the glue to dry.
    The result was two finished sides of the future children's bed.
  7. We fasten the remaining panels (future headboard and footboard) to these sides with screws. The screws must be recessed and their heads cannot be felt. We don’t worry about these holes; later they will be filled and sanded.
  8. To prevent the bottom from collapsing, we install prepared planks to support it. We fix them with screws (distance 1.0 cm from the bottom of our frames).
  9. The last step is to insert the remaining part, which will be the bottom of the future crib.

Important: To add stability, you can add a pair of crossbars between the legs of the crib, as shown below:

It is better to sand the elements of the crib

Use high quality, non-toxic materials, preferably water-based.

Getting a beautiful bed for your baby is not difficult if you do everything conscientiously and with love.

Do not neglect high-quality finishing, otherwise the crib will look like a failed experiment. However, if you put in the proper effort, you will end up with a wonderful, exclusive product.

It is also necessary to think about the decoration of the crib.

The crib can be on wheels

Making an interesting rocking bed with your own hands is a little more difficult. The parts for it are also made from plywood sheets. The wooden rods that will be the balusters are made independently from plywood by gluing two parts (blanks). To assemble one with your own hands, prepare:

  • front and back parts (backs) 82.8x62.0x1.8 cm - 2 pcs.;
  • shelf – 90.0x45.0x1.8 cm;
  • side wall – 90.0x27.0x1.8 cm;
  • handrails 90.0x0.4x1.8 cm – 2 pcs.;
  • supports (bars) 6.0x1.8x1.8 cm - 2 pcs.;
  • runners 76.0x8.0x1.5 cm – 4 pcs.;
  • stoppers 19.0x7.0x1.5 cm – 4 pcs.;
  • lining for walls (if desired) 68.0x47.0x1.5 cm - 2 parts;
  • side wall overlay (if desired) 80.0x9.0x1.5 cm;
  • base – 90.0x47.0x1.5 cm;
  • elements for rods (balusters) 24.0x2.5x0.4 cm – 40 parts

Assembly diagram for a baby crib - rocking chair

First you need to draw all the necessary details on plywood and carefully cut them out. Then start making rods that will serve as balusters. To do this, glue two parts together, giving them a slight bend, and clamp them with clamps. After drying, the parts will straighten slightly. This is not a big deal, however, it must be taken into account for the following rods. Sand well and round the edges. This must be done very efficiently and carefully with the upper edges of the panels and handrails so that the grown-up baby does not damage his hands. This can be easily done with a milling machine. Next, make holes for fasteners (dowels) in the sides. For the best effect, it is advisable to take a special drill with a limiter (stop).

Drawing of a rocking chair - cradle

Make grooves in the handrails and sides so that baluster rods can be inserted. Fill the grooves with PVA glue and insert the rods into them (between the handrails and side rails). Smooth all the elements well by wiping them with sandpaper. Give the rods a slight bend when gluing, this will visually decorate the crib. WITH inside After assembly, the fencing should have the curved side of the rods (balusters).

Wooden rocking bed will help your child calm down and fall asleep faster

Add two plywood stops to the support rails to prevent the structure from tipping over when rocking. Make them from plywood 1.5 cm thick. Screw the resulting parts with self-tapping screws, and secure the front and back walls with dowels and glue with runners. Prime the entire surface. Wait until the structure dries and paint all the details, preferably water-based paint. Do not use varnishes or oil paints, their smell does not disappear for a long time and negatively affects the child’s health.

Crib machine

These are used for older children who have already outgrown their first cribs. It’s easy to make it yourself; there are many photos and drawings on the Internet that can be decorated with any additional elements. Everything is limited only by your imagination. As with the above options, first decide on a sketch. Draw your child’s “car” from different angles.

Baby cot - machine

We choose the material. Most often, this type of furniture is made from chipboard sheets or MDF. In addition, you need to choose the material for the bottom, timber for support and self-tapping screws. Also, furniture of this size is often installed on casters in order to move it around the room without any problems. First, a strong frame is made, because the child will most likely actively play on it. Then decorative elements are attached.

Manufacturing depends on individual design, make a car crib with your own hands based on ready-made drawings, studying a photo of a “car” suitable for your child. Whatever crib you decide to make with your own hands, your child will appreciate your efforts and love you even more. Good luck in your work!

In this article we will tell you how to make a crib for a child yourself. preschool age and show you the whole process step by step.

What should a crib be like?

Making a baby crib with your own hands must comply with the following rules:

  • only natural and environmentally friendly materials are used;
  • the crib has a reliable design;
  • free from potentially traumatic corners, protrusions, and parts;
  • the surface is perfectly smooth, without roughness or chips;
  • corresponds to the child’s parameters;
  • completely eliminates the possibility of falling.

Benefits of making a bed yourself

The advantages of a homemade children's bed are:

  1. Confidence in the materials used to make the crib. In the case of store-bought products, information about the parameters is not always available.
  2. The design is developed according to your own parameters and requirements.
  3. During the manufacturing process of the product, you can independently verify its strength, which is especially important in the case of children jumping on a mattress.
  4. A baby crib made by yourself significantly saves the family budget.
  5. You get incomparable pleasure from furniture made for your child yourself.

Bed design options: choose the right one

Exists a large number of modification of sleeping places, but let’s focus on the most popular:

  • with and without sides;
  • loft bed;
  • transformer.

Below we will look at the process of making a regular baby crib with legs with a headboard and footboard with our own hands. The option is without tricks, does not involve particularly complex work and will not take much time.

Also, having understood the principle of operation, you can, by analogy, make a crib for a newborn, baby or child over 3 years old.

How to make a crib with your own hands

Before purchasing materials and tools for a children's bed made of plywood or other materials, you need to carefully consider the entire process of creating this piece of furniture and understand the basic elements.

  1. Frame. The parameters depend on the size of the bed and the mattress used accordingly. The main material for production is dry board.
  2. Lamels. The product supports the mattress and is a base in the form of lattice strips or plywood with ventilation holes.
  3. Sidewalls. Lattice or solid safety fences.
  4. Byltsa. Made from solid wood, chipboard or plywood. The height at the foot is traditionally lower than that of the headboard element.
  5. Legs. Can be made independently or purchased in a store. They can be integral with the main structure or attached separately.

Drawings and diagrams

Start work by preparing a drawing according to which the structure will be cut. Below we offer you options for ready-made drawings and diagrams that you can use.

To view the drawing in full size, right-click on the image and select the “open image in new tab” command.

Materials and tools

External parts of the bed, visible to the eye, made from MDF. You can choose wood based on the finances at your disposal. If the bed will often be moved or carried, you should give preference to lightweight ones. tree species. A children's bed can also be made from plywood, which is installed on a frame. You will need edged and planed lumber in the form of boards and beams, whole or in sections.

The following tool is also required for the job:

  • saw for woodworking;
  • milling cutter;
  • grinding machine;
  • drill;
  • corner;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • fasteners;
  • screeds;
  • screwdriver.

The first stage is making the legs

We start with the legs, making blanks from the timber. You can also contact a lumber shop and order them to be made according to your dimensions. You need 4 pieces of each length.

Remember! The legs of the bed are longer at the head of the bed and shorter at the foot of the bed.

We connect the blanks using glue and self-tapping screws.

The screws should be well sunk into the wood and covered with putty. After the product has dried, all irregularities and joints are sanded.

We begin work by making the legs. To do this, take the blanks in pairs, glue them evenly and twist them with self-tapping screws.

These are ready-made crib legs. All that remains is to putty it.

Second stage - holes for dowels

To install the backrests, a groove should be made. Its width is 2.5 cm. Use a router or, if you don’t have one, contact a carpenter. It’s easier to take ready-made dowels by choosing a drill of the appropriate diameter.

Having previously measured the exact distance and level on the planks, drill holes for dowels at the ends of the planks. Monitor the immersion depth of the drill using a beacon attached to it.

The third stage - the head and foot of the crib

From a 2.5 * 5 cm board, you need to cut boards of equal length to fill the headboard and footboard with them. Next, insert them into the groove filled with glue.

We drill a hole in the leg, then mark the middle, attach and align the back. Then we mark the areas where the holes for the dowels will be drilled. We put a little adhesive material in them and insert the back. The canvas should fit tightly, avoid gaps.

We attach the legs to the back of the crib.

The same process is duplicated on the other leg. If an unaesthetic joint is formed, it is masked with a board, secured with self-tapping screws.

Finished footboard and headboard of the crib

The fourth stage is the basis for the mattress

We take two boards 5*10 cm along the length of the mattress, use self-tapping screws and glue to attach a plank that is 10 cm shorter. We drill holes closer to the edge. The hats should ultimately be completely hidden.

Installation of crib slats

We cut the slats and attach them to the slats with a stop in 10 cm increments along the width of the mattress with two self-tapping screws. The holes for fasteners are covered with putty and subsequently sanded.

Fastening the cross bars

In the outer slats you need to make cutouts for the legs of the crib.

Fifth stage - assembling the crib

Now we are finally eliminating all the defects wooden parts beds (chips, cracks, etc.) by sealing with putty, then sanding until smooth.

The next step is priming and painting all the parts.

All. All we have to do is connect the backrests and the base for the mattress. Our crib, which we made for the baby ourselves, is ready!

For fastening use furniture fittings, which is sold in stores.

Ideas for decorating a baby crib

After finishing the main work, it's time to start decorating to give the bed a finished look.
In terms of decorative implementation, the sides provide a wide field for action. The decoration can be an original ornament or pattern, a print depicting your favorite characters. Using harmless acrylic or silicone paint in this case it will allow you to add unusual touches.

You can upholster the product with furniture fabric, having previously made the pattern a couple of centimeters larger than the dimensions of the parts. The material is leveled to avoid bubbles and secured with a furniture stapler. This option will look harmonious on a do-it-yourself crib for a girl.

You can paint the crib with a special furniture paint that is safe for humans.

Coating the frame with varnish can also be classified as a finishing method. To do this, it is recommended to use products that dry quickly. All parts are sanded and polished.

So, we have looked at the process of making a baby crib with our own hands. If anything remains unclear or you have any questions, ask in the comments below. We will definitely answer them.

Manufacturing process
Step one: making side shields
The author made the side elements of the frame from furniture panels and wooden blocks. Furniture board is absolutely natural material, which is wood sheet made by gluing together boards of different widths.

Even when it comes to making children's furniture, the furniture board can be replaced with plywood. The choice of plywood in this case must be taken responsibly, since some types can be toxic.

You will need first or second grade plywood marked FK or FBA. Both types are harmless and recommended for making children's furniture. Remember that such plywood is not moisture resistant and requires additional coating.

Prepare two pieces of furniture board or plywood for the side walls of the crib. Mark and cut out a recess at the base for the legs. Use a drill and jigsaw for this.

Also prepare pieces of timber for making the frame of the panels. They are sawn off at an angle of 135 degrees and fixed to the board using glue and furniture dowels. Use beech dowels with a diameter of 8 mm.

Step two: making lattice sides
The sides of the crib are made of natural wood. You will need thin slats and bars with a cross section of 35 x 35 or 40 x 40 mm.
Prepare horizontal guides. Pre-sand the wood and round the corners. Mark the grooves using a template.

The author cut out the grooves manual router. You can also use it to cut tenons on the sheathing. To do this, assemble the sheathing parts and temporarily fasten them together. Mark and process the workpieces on 4 sides as shown in the photo.
Assemble the sides using glue.

Step three: assembling the perimeter of the crib
Connect side elements frame and sides. To do this, mark and drill in the sidewalls through holes under the bolts. To fix the bolts, the author uses furniture barrel nuts with a hole under flat screwdriver. The holes for the nuts are located on the sides. Mark the nut into the hole and tighten the bolt so that it fits into the nut hole. While screwing in the bolt, hold the nut with a screwdriver.

Step four: making the crib frame
Assemble the bed frame on dowels. Use wood glue. The author uses bars as lathing. You can also purchase ready-made slats with fasteners. They create a spring base and at the same time have amazing strength. The slats will significantly extend the life of the mattress and allow it to breathe. The most unsuitable base for a mattress is a solid panel flooring.

Step five: assembling the crib frame
To install the frame, place it on bottom trim a couple of bars as shown in the photo. Secure the frame from below with clamps. Drill holes in the sides for the bolts. The drill must also pass through the plane of the external frame trim.
Place the bolts into the resulting holes and tighten with nuts from the inside. Now the temporary bars can be removed.

The author also provided for installing the base of the crib in the second - upper position. This is very convenient while the child is small and cannot get up on his own. In this position, it is easier for mom to get him out of the crib without bending down to the very base.

Remove the base. You will need 4 small pieces of wood. Drill through holes for the bolt and install the bars on the same fasteners as the base before. Attach stops made of thin boards or veneer to the base frame in the center.

Step six: making the mattress
The crib mattress is made of furniture foam rubber. Please note that furniture foam rubber has completely different hardness according to its marking. One might assume that a child needs a soft mattress, but here the situation is just the opposite. After all, to form correct posture, children need a fairly rigid sleeping place.

You will need two pieces of foam rubber according to the size of the mattress. Thus, the thickness of the mattress will be 10 cm. For the top layer, choose foam rubber with a hardness above average. Under no circumstances should you buy memory foam, as in rare cases it can cause suffocation for newborns. For the bottom layer, if desired, you can use medium-hard foam.

Glue two layers of foam rubber together with non-flammable glue, which is usually used by furniture makers. Wrap the resulting foam blank in a layer of padding polyester and place it in a fabric cover. The author connected the layers of foam rubber with a strong thread.

Fabric cover for children's mattress usually equipped with a zipper. To sew it, only natural fabrics are used - most often cotton, linen, and in Lately- bamboo.

Pick up durable fabrics with a density of at least 180 g per 1 sq. m., for example teak or jacquard weave fabrics.
