I was not the first to come up with the idea that when using ordinary chairs and stools, a lot of useful space in the room is lost.
You feel this especially acutely in our small kitchens, where it is often simply impossible to fit everything you need. Indeed, it is not necessary to use an ordinary stool as a place to sit - it will be no less convenient to sit on a small bedside table in which you can store kitchen utensils or food. These thoughts eventually led me to the decision to make something like a hybrid of a bedside table and a stool - a nightstand. And since I don’t live alone, I decided to make two of these products at once. Of course, this doesn’t look like a set, but a pair of identical things still reduces the furniture confusion in the kitchen.
Choosing material for making bedside tables and stools
I decided to make the body of the product from pine furniture board. A sheet of laminated HDF was perfect as a back wall. But I wanted to make the seat itself from a harder wood - for example, birch.
For finishing I planned a Sikkens water lan. I chose the same tone as the kitchen. The final “kinship” with it was ensured by such small details as handles: I picked them with the same pattern as on all the other kitchen handles.
I decided to varnish the seat more light tone. As fastening fittings I used angles, dowels and eccentric ties.
Doors
I decided to make the doors paneled - they were supposed to give additional “importance” to such a small object. The panel itself was made from furniture board 18 mm thick, as were the strapping bars. Buying pine in a store furniture board, I noticed that several panels were glued not from lamellas spliced along the length, but from solid ones, and even radial cut. Such shields - the best preparations for doors. Of course, they immediately ended up in my cart.
On the panel I processed the figar field not only with front side, but also from the back. It's not that wide there. For work, I purchased an assembly of cutters from SMT, which allows me to simultaneously remove the “excess” from both sides of the workpiece. True, this is only possible with not very wide
processing zone, but the productivity of the cutters is still very high: one pass is enough for processing. Of course, the milling cutter must have a power of at least 2 kW and be equipped with the obligatory function of maintaining constant speed under load. This is very important, since you can only work with large diameter cutters at the appropriate speed - usually no more than 11,000-12,000 rpm.
And one more thing about safety. If we turned the router over and secured it to the table, the danger of this tool increased significantly. Under no circumstances should you allow your fingers to come into contact with a rotating cutter! For safety, for example, I always use a protective screen made of durable and transparent material. My screen is tilted towards the operator so that a finger cannot fit between it and the workpiece. And the shape of the screen is elongated so that the palm from the side also does not reach the cutter. Although when working, your hands should not be on the side at the level of the cutter, but only in the area of the workpiece in front of the screen.
I also processed the strapping bars milling table using a set of two cutters - for the profile and counter-profile.
IMPORTANT
For each cutter diameter there is a maximum rotation speed - exceeding it is dangerous.
DIY bedside table - stool: manufacturing progress
The panels were made with a powerful milling cutter fixed to the table. The protective screen is clearly visible.
Manufacturing of body parts and assembly
There were no particular difficulties with cutting out the furniture board. First I sawed it lengthwise with a circular saw, then crosswise. Planed the edges with a plane and chamfered them with a low-power manual router.
After that I sanded the planes of the parts. This job is best done by an orbital Grinder. Because I planned to use water-based varnish, before grinding, I wet the parts with water. At the same time, the fibers swell and the pile rises. When the parts dried, the “orbital” removed it all. After such sanding, when applying varnish, the pile no longer rises, and the surfaces covered with varnish become smooth and pleasant to the touch - as it should be for furniture.
When I coated the parts with varnish, I made sure not to paint over the places where glue would be applied during assembly: clean surfaces without varnish stick together more firmly.
The doors are pre-assembled and ready for painting. The wall and lid blanks are awaiting further processing. To make the stands look more like stool legs, drilling machine I drilled two 0 35 mm holes in the bottom of the racks (like cups for hinges)…
...after which I cut out the excess with a jigsaw, moving the file in a straight line.
I rounded the corners of the seats a little with a jigsaw with an allowance. I used the first round object that came to hand as a template. Then I brought the circles to the correct tape shape grinder. Finally, I cut a chamfer with a radius of 6.3 mm around the perimeter using a manual router.
After finishing the panels and strapping bars, I glued the doors together using wedges.
IMPORTANT
Typically, laminated chipboard furniture uses two fastening points per side (for example, at a shelf). But the glued furniture board is not rigid enough in the transverse direction, so it is better to have more attachment points, at least three.
The seat was secured to the posts using eccentric ties. I preliminarily marked the locations for drilling holes in the end edges of the racks.
I drilled holes for the eccentric rods with a 0 7 mm drill...
...and for the eccentrics themselves, I drilled cups 0 15 mm on a drilling machine (if you don’t have one, you can do this with a drill fixed in a rack).
The lower shelves were attached to dowels and corners (they are invisible at the bottom, so they don’t spoil the view). I drilled holes for the dowels on a homemade machine.
Then, from the bottom of the seats, I marked the center lines of the edges of the pillars. Having aligned the racks and seats, I found the locations of the holes for the eccentric rods.
I drilled the holes with a 0 5 mm drill with limited depth and screwed in the rods.
I connected the lower shelves with dowels to the racks...
...and secured it with corners. For attaching the rear wall to bottom side I screwed the seats in advance with a block of screws. The racks have grooves for the rear wall.
I attached the back wall with self-tapping screws to the bottom shelf, racks and seat block. It consists of two sheets of laminated (on the front side) HDF glued together and provides additional rigidity to the product.
The doors were installed inside the body on internal hinges. Therefore, to fix them in closed position(so as not to fall through) installed a false rail. All that remains is to glue soft pads to the bottom of the leg stands - and you can sit down at the table.
The chosen color of the product's finish goes well with the tone of the rest of the kitchen furniture.

To make it easy to screw in a light bulb, wipe a curtain rod, or reach the top of kitchen cabinets, I made a convenient step stool.
First, I cut out templates of all the design details from thick cardboard (see figure on page 15) and transferred them to multilayer plywood 20 mm thick (you can use a furniture board or board of a suitable size). Then, using a jigsaw, I cut out the details of the stool along the contour, and cut out corner and semicircular holes and grooves on the side walls (1), the seat (2) and the back wall of the “liner” (8). I drilled 6 mm holes in both side walls of the stool and at the ends of the base of the retractable part.
Started assembly. TO internal parties side walls (1) on required height(depending on the size of the “liner” step) secured the strips (5) measuring 20x25x60 mm. I attached the base (3) to the side walls with self-tapping screws, and the transverse strips (4) to the cutouts on the sidewalls. Placed the seat on top (2)
Separately, I assembled the retractable part of the stool, connecting all the parts (6, 7,8) using dowels and glue, and secured it to the base with bolts and bushings. To do this, on both sides at the junction, I glued metal tubes of suitable diameter with internal thread M6, placed the retractable stand and connected it to the base by screwing the bolts into the threaded bushings.

Before screwing in the bolts, I placed washers under their heads.
The stool was sanded and coated with colorless varnish.
