Also in Ancient Greece plates were divided into tableware and decorative; in China, already in the 7th century, they learned to produce porcelain tableware, but in Europe, the secret of the finest Chinese porcelain was unraveled only in the Middle Ages. But how did the tradition of hanging decorative plates on the wall arise? Its origin is associated with another tradition - to reward subjects with exquisite porcelain tableware for special services to the state. Most likely, it was also influenced by the one that arose at the end of the 19th century. fashion for collecting. And so, in the 60s. last century, the factory of the French jeweler Rene Lalique produced the first collection of plates intended exclusively for home decor.

Today, “plate” decor does not lose its relevance and keeps up with the times. For example, you don’t have to buy special decorative or collectible plates - you can right now create a composition from the saucers you already have. In addition, wall plates can organically fit even into a modern, not just classic interior, as it was before.

Let's take a closer look at this type of decor and find out:

  • how to correctly create a wall composition based on the color, shape, size and pattern of the dishes;
  • how and where it can be placed;
  • how to hang plates on the wall with your own hands using store-bought or improvised means, including without drilling the wall.

Making a composition

In making a collage from different plates, perhaps, the main thing is that they have something in common. This may be a consistent color scheme, pattern, theme and/or shape of the dishes. It is also very important that the entire composition fits organically into the interior of the kitchen and does not clutter it up. Let's explore successful examples such decor.

Interior color scheme, walls and panels

  • On a plain background, you can hang plates of any color - from bright and variegated to contrasting or strict;

  • Keep in mind that the brighter or darker the wall, the brighter the saucers should be so as not to be lost against the background;

  • The color scheme of the wall composition can and should support color scheme kitchen interior (furniture, curtains, decoration, etc.);

  • Black and white dishes, for example, from the iconic collection of Piero Fornasetti, will look great on a black or white background;

  • You can create a play between the colors of the plates and the colored wall;

  • In an interior with a light, pastel color scheme, plates of the same unobtrusive shades will look good;

  • If the wall in the kitchen is decorated with wallpaper with a pattern, then try to choose plates that would harmoniously combine not only with the color, but also with the pattern of the wallpaper;

We combine plates with each other

When making a collage of dishes, you can create a combination of different-sized saucers with designs on different themes, but in the same color scheme. In this case, the plates can be either plain or with a border, painting, or print.

Most often, the “plate” panel is united not only by color, but also by theme. For example, these could be souvenir plates brought from travels, or plant themes, as in the photo below.

The most original idea- hang a panel of plates, assembled according to the principle of a mosaic. On next photo presents the collection of ceramics designer Molly Hatch.

However, it is not necessary to buy a ready-made panel, because you can create a “mosaic” from saucers painted with your own hands acrylic paints.

Themes of decorative plates and interior styles

  • Traditional saucers with floral motifs, painting in the style of Gzhel ceramics, Chinese and Delft porcelain, with gilding, etc. are suitable.

  • Kitchen interior in modern style will become more interesting thanks to the combination of a variety of bright and colorful plates, united by shape, color or patterns;

  • In ethnic styles, copper trays, plates with folk painting and textile as in the photo below;

  • In country style you can use original wicker plates, white dishes different forms from ceramics and simply traditional floral motifs.

Nine popular shapes for plate compositions

Having decided on the composition of your wall composition, you need to decide on the order in which the plates are placed relative to each other.

  1. One row (or more). With its help, you can create an accent on one of the walls - for example, on the one located near.

  1. Symmetrical composition. Perfect option in the event that the rest of the decor in the room is also located symmetrically, or if you need to highlight a large object on the wall - say, a mirror.

  1. The entire wall. The composition should fill an empty section of the wall.

  1. Wave . Such a group in the form of a curved line will look amazing on an empty wide wall.

  1. Arch. This form will allow you to elegantly decorate the area around a large interior item - the same mirror or even a window.

  1. Patterns. It is easy to create fantasy figures from saucers - for example, a snowflake, an asterisk. However, keep in mind that in this case the fastening is checked especially carefully so as not to go beyond the boundaries of the figure.
  2. By size, that is, from large to small or vice versa. Such compositions are placed horizontally or vertically - the main thing here will be the correspondence of sizes.

  1. Around the door. Even if a spacious kitchen has enough decorative accents, the space near the doorway almost always remains free. You can use it to your advantage by placing a symmetrical composition of decorative plates.

  1. Free forms. Good decision to house a scattered collection or hand-crafted works. In this case, you don’t have to think about combinations of shapes, colors and sizes.

Methods for attaching plates to the wall

So, you have thought about what saucers the panel will consist of, played with combinations, laying out the dishes on the floor, all that remains is to implement your idea. How to secure the plates neatly and simply?

You can simply trace the plates on paper, cut out the resulting templates, secure them to the wall with pins (photo on the left) or tape, and only then start working.

You can also trace the outlines of the saucers on large sheet paper, transfer the paper to the wall, and then install it according to the mounting markings.

The mount, in turn, can be purchased or homemade:

  1. How to hang plates on the wall without using nails or making holes in the kitchen walls? Perhaps the only way to do this is with Command Velcro. They hold plates perfectly and are easy to peel off and re-stick. This mount is sold in Russia in many online stores, construction hypermarkets, etc. In the photo below you can see how they are attached to the wall and saucers.

  1. You can hang decorative plates using adhesive discs specially designed for this purpose - Disc Plate Hangers. Discs come in different diameters and are selected according to the diameter and weight of the cookware. This type of fastening has 2 drawbacks - they are not so easy to buy, since they are not sold in Russia, but they can easily be ordered on Ebay and other online stores. The second drawback is that you won’t be able to use them to hang plates on the wall without hammering nails into it.
  2. If you don’t want to buy fastenings, then you can easily make it yourself using a regular safety pin, a loop of tape, a paper clip and cold welding like Poxipol. If desired, this place can be decorated later.

Don’t forget that you can also use a ready-made mount for decorative plates:

  • Tabletop plate holder (left photo below):
  • Wall mounted plate holder;

Here’s a video on how to turn an ordinary plate into a decorative one with your own hands by painting it with a stencil:

One of the ways you can diversify the interior of your apartment is to use decorative plates on the wall in the kitchen. They can be removed if necessary to hang other design elements and thereby transform the interior of the room again.

You can also support new color accents by using similar shades in the room.

Before hanging wall plates in the interior, it is worth studying the rules of harmony. They are as follows: firstly, the group of products should be positioned symmetrically, then it will look more complete; secondly, the size of the dishes, as well as the color scheme, should be selected taking into account the area of the room and the interior itself (large plates and dishes are inappropriate in a cramped and small room).

You can try all the options: combine rectangular plates with round shapes, and multi-colored with single-colored ones.

Decorative plates for the wall, photo

To correctly create a composition of decorative plates for the wall, you should consider the following:

  • the plates should fit harmoniously into the color scheme of the interior;
  • if the room needs to be given dynamism, then the products should be placed in order from large to small sizes;
  • if you arrange the plates symmetrically, a strict conservative style will be created;
  • the color scheme and style should match other accessories in the room.

In the interior of the living room, decorative plates look original and unusual. The choice of such decor for decoration is considered in a simple way change the design of the room, add a touch of piquancy to it.

For interior in Provence style The best decision- plates with floral scenes. It is ideal if curtains or furniture upholstery in the room are decorated with similar bouquets.

Placement and selection of plates to match the color of the walls

In the interior, decorative wall plates can be placed in different ways. Depending on the imagination of the performer, the required number is selected.

If the wall covering is monotonous, light or white, then the products should be in rich colors and with bright patterns.

If the wall is covered with wallpaper and painted in intense colors, then white plates painted with a pattern in the background color will look especially impressive.

Plates on the wall in the kitchen, photo

These items also look great as single-color elements, but in bright colors. By the way, such plates can be arranged in the form geometric shapes, while creating several groups.

When decorating a room with beautiful ceramic or glassware, you must strictly adhere to the basic design rule. It is as follows: on decorative plates, the pattern and color, the direction of the lines should fit into the interior. For example, when placing a composition in the kitchen, the plates should match the textiles and details of the given room.

They can also be integrated into the design, playing with the contrast with the main picturesque style of the kitchen. For example, white walls can be separated by a set of dishes with patterns in red or blue colors.

When deciding to decorate a room with items such as gift or painted plates, you should consider important fact: they are independent complete decorative elements. Therefore, you need to create an imaginary negligence when decorating the kitchen walls using such elements on a free wall.

Since the plate has perfect shape, it does not require diversity and excesses in design. After all, each such product can be a unique color and have an original base, design, pattern or picture. Therefore, plates do not always match the design of the room.

For example, if you place wall plates in the kitchen interior above the doorway, then it is not necessary to combine them in color with the wall covering.

It is important that when placing plates on the walls it is permissible to combine different styles within one room. In this case wall panel suggests that the dishes from the composition can be of various shapes and sizes.

When creating a kitchen design using these elements, decorative plates can act as a kind of unifying, transitional design element between interior items and the color of the walls.

If you arrange unique products on wooden shelves or stands, you can organize their exhibition. Plates in white and blue colors and antique items – classic version collectibles and wall decoration.

The nuances of using plates for decoration

When using this method when decorating a room in a minimalist style, use no more than three cool tones. It is important to consider the correspondence of the drawings to a single theme.

A standard-style kitchen does not involve setting the table or decorating the interior with expensive dishes with the owner’s monogram.

Decorative plates purchased in souvenir shops are not considered the most the best way collecting. Ideally, each product, even those purchased abroad, should be made individually for the buyer.

In private homes, when creating a kitchen design, in most cases, niches in the walls and the space above the wooden window frames And ceiling beams, left without processing and finishing on purpose, as if for show.

Such products are fastened using screws or using various hanging screens. They can be purchased in special stores that sell design products.

The presence of Meissen porcelain in the kitchen is considered an indicator of wealth in the house, therefore, if you have the financial opportunity, it is better to purchase products from this material.

An even greater effect can be achieved if the interior is decorated with porcelain masterpieces created by yourself. It should be remembered that using such decor is not difficult: you just need to combine an artistic idea and a creative solution.

How to make your own plates

Making such a decoration yourself is not difficult, the main thing is to have varnish and paints on hand, as well as white plates as blanks.

Decorate them different ways: the simplest dishes can be painted with acrylic paints. For those who do not know how to draw, it is enough to print the drawing on a printer. On next stage it should be displayed on the surface of the plate. To do this, you need to transfer the image using carbon paper and color it.

Easiest to work with ceramic dishes, on which the paint lies smoothly.

To make your own mounts for decorative plates on the wall, just purchase ready-made options:

  • a metal stand for decorative plates can be easily placed on any surface: dresser, window sill, or attached to walls;
  • wall plate holder will fit harmoniously into any interior;
  • transparent holders, durable and almost invisible, will completely encircle the product, which will give more confidence in the strength of the fastening;
  • a shelf with holding bars for plates will help organize them in the interior.

Wall placement options

You can use one of the common options listed in the diagrams below, or come up with your own.

In one row. Allows you to focus on a selected area. This arrangement of plates can be placed above pieces of furniture along the wall. For example, above a sleeping place, a fireplace, which will highlight these items advantageously.

Symmetrical. The perfect solution for rooms in which everything is symmetrical. For example, above a fireplace or mirror, plates should be placed at the same distance, one above the other.

Creation of geometric shapes. This option will be original for filling empty space on the wall, for example, repetition square shape using the appropriate arrangement of plates.

Wave. A way to decorate a wide wall surface. You need to draw a curved line in the shape of a wave and place a composition of plates along it various forms and sizes. Nice option, if products in the form of sea shells and flowers are used.

Arch. This placement is suitable for decorating a space near a mirror, instead of a painting, or near a window. For its implementation, round or round products would be ideal. oval shape. You can place them above the planned object in the room in the form of an arch. This will allow you to decorate the wall - in the living room near the mirror or in the bedroom above the bed.

Patterns. You can use decorative plates to create a simple figure in the form of a star or snowflake. It's better to use plates for this. different sizes and shapes, as well as an old unnecessary set of dishes, which can even be given greater preference. This option will require precise calculations and patience.

Ascending. The main condition is that you need to choose the right size plates. Moreover, they should have only one shape - only round or only oval.

Plot. The plates should be placed so as to create a pattern. It will be perceived more effectively if you hang the objects as closely as possible to each other.

Arbitrary location. Sort of like “orderly chaos.” This method does not require a serious choice of shape and size.

A number of other options for arranging decorative plates in the interior can be seen in the video below:

Using the decoupage technique

One of the more complicated ways When decorating decorative dishes, the use of decoupage technique is considered. The pattern is applied only with outside. To implement your idea, you can use napkins, fabric, and magazine clippings. To perform this you need to prepare materials: a plate with smooth surface, glue, material with the desired pattern, tape, scissors, brushes, varnish, paint.

Advice! The patterned material used can be cut into a circle so that it fits the dimensions of the product. This will make the job easier.

After this, glue is evenly applied to the plate. You can use a brush for this. A pattern is placed on top and smoothed out. Patterned paper or a napkin should be straightened carefully, without violating its integrity. Another layer of adhesive is applied on top.

You can use paints to add some specific details of the drawing, if desired. After this, you need to wait until the glue and paints dry completely.

Decorative wall plates: photo, do it yourself

When the work on creating the plates is completed, you can move on to attaching them to the surface. Although many people do not know how to hang decorative plates on the wall, there is nothing difficult about it. You can use various devices, as mentioned above. These are screws and hooks that are attached to the plates with glue.

To make the product as a whole look attractive, it is better to decorate the hooks to match the color of the plate with paints or using the decoupage technique, doing the same steps as when creating the plate itself.

To give the room unique look, ceramic plates can be used to highlight certain areas, thus decorating the wall in it. By choosing any desired sequence, you can change the design of the room quite often.

Today I come to you with a master class that I have been thinking about for a very, very long time. One summer, while living at the dacha, I found in my Talmuds one unpresentable-looking piece of paper on which some kind of scribbles could be discerned. Having looked closely at them, I realized that my wishes were written on them. One of these wishes was hanging for plates, which I was doing at that distant time. I mastered, so to speak, decoupage using them. I somehow bought and assembled stands for plates, but there were no hangers to hang these same plates on the wall. My brain worked hard in this direction, I already had some ideas and outlines, but... But these ideas were not destined to come true.

And last summer, having found this wish list, I zealously took on one of them. It was just a rainy summer (and not only here) and this topic was very opportune. In general, I won’t go on for a long time, but I’ll say right away that I didn’t finish this matter. My beloved girlfriend, mother laziness, did not let me finish what I started. So my unfinished work is lying on the country veranda...
Oh, I’m talking about pendants... So, at the end of the year, while in Moscow at the Grand Textile exhibition, I saw these same pendants! For the plates! On the wall! I can’t tell you the joy I felt when I saw these neatly packaged metal spring things! Oooh, how I rolled my lips!!! Mentally hanging the plates on the walls, I had already taken out my wallet, but the price announced by the seller brought me back to earth. Why did she return it... She just smacked me against my dear! Two hundred forty (or 60 - I don’t remember) rubles! Thing! Having narrowed my eyes and rolled my lips, which had spread out so quickly, I silently stepped aside. I blended in with the crowd, so to speak...
And then I gave myself my most honest, most honest word that I would definitely take on the implementation of my long-time wish - hanging for plates. With improvised materials. To be as free as possible... And I kept my word to myself! Today I once and for all decided for myself the issue of placing plates on the walls! Of course, I had to modify them a little (and they don’t shine like store-bought ones), but the cost of the resulting pendants really caresses my soul - from 6 to 9 rubles... A thing...

So, we will need:

  • wire (I have a two-core wire) with a core cross-section of 1.5-2 mm;
  • round nose pliers;
  • stationery knife;
  • marker;
  • underwear elastic;
  • needle and thread.

Here I show the drawing that guided my work. I think everything is clear here. I made these hangers for a plate with a diameter of 23 cm!!! Other plates require different hook sizes.

Using a utility knife, we separate the two-core cable and pull out the two wires.

We measure the wire to size and bite it off with pliers.

That's it, my dears, let's cut the wire. The cut is smooth and not wrinkled. And you can literally snack with two fingers! At first I used wire cutters, but they did not give an even cut, and I had to use considerable (for me) force.

Doing stationery knife transverse circular cuts, remove the braid in small pieces. We make marks on the wire according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing.

At first I made the bottom of the pendant like this, but then I abandoned this method and decided to make the top and bottom the same in configuration, but slightly different in size.

So, thumbnail right hand(if it’s more convenient, use your left hand) to rest against the mark on the wire and bend it in this place. The wire bends quite easily. We make folds along all marks. It turns out to be a letter like this.

We bend the very ends of this workpiece with round pliers.

We got two parts - upper and lower.

We place these hooks on a plate and measure the distance between them, determining the desired length of the elastic band. We got 10 cm. Add half and get a total of 15 cm.

We cut off 2 elastic bands 15 cm long... I draw your attention to the fact that the elastic band should be tight. An elastic band won't work on an old tights!!! A weak elastic band will not hold the hooks well and the plate will simply fall out of their grasp.

Roll it into a ring and sew it together. I placed two staples with threads at a distance of 0.5 cm. We try to ensure that the stitches are one to one, and not scattered throughout the elastic band!

We put the elastic ring on the hook of the workpiece...

And we stitch it with a needle and thread right next to the wire.

We move the sewn elastic to the very bottom of the workpiece. We do the same with the second elastic band and the second workpiece.

As a result, we get this design, which we will proudly call a “plate holder”!

We fix the holder on the plate and slightly raise the middle top mount. This is necessary so that the fastening fits well on a hook or nail driven into the wall.

This is the result of our efforts. Made from copper wire...

And made of aluminum wire. Aluminum wire bends easier and the corner is sharper than copper wire.

This is how the mount looks on the finished plate. For dark plates, you can use black elastic.

This plate is from those ancient times when I enthusiastically learned the art of decoupage! For a long time it stood on a stand, then lay for even longer in a stack of its own kind in a dark closet, and now it’s on the wall, which I’m very, very happy about!

Different sizes - for large and small plates.
Such suspensions are good because their hooks can be easily moved and moved apart. And with all this, they hold the plate quite securely!

This is also a very old plate that was lying in my closet. As you can see, the aluminum hangers are almost invisible on this plate!
In the future I want to experiment with the very tips of the hooks in order to cover them with something...

Well, that’s all, my dears, that I wanted to show you today! Of course, you can’t give such pendants to anyone, but they will be very good for home use! After all, we tried and did everything carefully!

Give the wire the appropriate shape. Using pliers, attach the required form wire 45 - 61 cm long. The future loop should be exactly in the center, and its depth should be about 10 cm. Bend both ends of the wire from the loop in the shape of a spiral or curls.

  • The wire must be strong enough to support the plate. 2 gauge wire is usually quite strong and can support up to 50 pounds. However, we still recommend checking the specifications, as manufacturers may change specifications.
  • Glue the wire to the back of the plate with hot glue. Look at the plate from the front to determine how to position the mount. Place the wire in the back wall, positioning it in the desired position. The loop should be pointing upward. Using a hot glue gun, secure the wire to the plate.

    • Apply glue between the wire and the plate. Also apply glue to the sides and to the wire. How more glue, the more reliable the fixation will be.
    • Do not allow glue to get on the hinge.
    • Wait 5 – 20 minutes for the glue to cool and harden.
    • Hot glue is quite difficult to remove, so use this method only if you no longer plan to use the plate for its intended purpose.
  • The connection can be strengthened with tape. Glue several layers of tape onto the wire with glue so that it also covers the plate.

    • Tape all parts of the wire except the loop.
    • The tape should not be visible from the front.
  • Bend the loop back a little. Carefully bend the loop back a little. At the top point it should move away from the plate by 1 - 2.5 cm.

    • The wire should not twist or fall behind the plate while bending the loop. If this happens, more glue and tape should be applied.
    • The nail will be threaded into this bent loop.
  • Drive a nail into the wall. To determine the optimal location, place the plate against the wall in different places. Lightly mark the top of the plate on the wall with a pencil, then set it aside and measure the distance from the top edge to the hinge. After this, make another mark on the wall and drive a nail into it.

    • Mark marks lightly with a pencil so that they can be erased later.
    • Use a large-headed nail or a special nail for attaching pictures.
    • The nail must go at least halfway into the wall, but the protruding part must be 1.25 - 2.5 cm in order to hang the loop on it.
  • Hang the plate. Carefully place the loop on the nail. If you are satisfied with everything, then the job is done.

    • If the loop sags after attaching it to a nail, use more glue or tape. If the nail is loose, replace the nail or try driving it in a different location.
    • If the plate is askew, try bending the loop a little differently to change the position on the nail. If this does not help, then you will have to peel off the glue with the wire and repeat it all over again.
