Filtering military gas masks

Filtering military gas mask PMK-1, PMK-2, PMK-3

General-arms filter gas mask PMK (mask M-80)

Gas mask PMK. Filtering and absorption box EO. 1.08.01 has the shape of a cylinder with a height of 8.7 cm and a diameter of 11.2 cm. The marking on the FPC is applied with waterproof mastic to the cylindrical part of the body: the first line is the index of the box - EO. 1.08.01, second line - quarter and last two digits of the year of manufacture, batch number, series and FPK number. On the protective screen (under the plug) it is indicated in the form of a convex stamp in a circle symbol manufacturer.

The M-80 mask consists of a body, a seal, a spectacle unit, a valve box, an FPK connection unit with an inhalation valve, a fairing, a capsule-type intercom, a liquid intake system and a head cap.

The spectacle unit has trapezoidal curved glasses, providing the ability to work with optical instruments.

The valve box with two mushroom-type exhalation valves is made of polymer and has a threaded connection for carrying out Maintenance valves On the saddle of the external valve there is a rubber screen designed to prevent clogging and freezing of the exhalation valves. The screen opening is directed downwards.

The fairing is made of polymer material and installed inside on the FPK attachment unit. The fairing hole is directed towards the valve box, for which there is a protrusion on it, and on the FPK connection unit there is a corresponding recess. Installed by pressing your hand until it clicks.

The capsule-type intercom cannot be disassembled in departments.

The liner is designed to prevent deformation of the mask during storage in warehouses.

In the non-operating position, the rubber drinking tube is wrapped around the intercom, and the nipple is placed in a holder located under the valve box and molded in one piece with the body of the mask.

M-80 masks are produced with a left-hand (90%) and right-hand (10%) arrangement of the FPK connection unit.

The markings on the M-80 mask correspond to the markings on the ShM-41Mu.

The bag has a shape rectangular parallelepiped. Made from two-layer fabric with fire-resistant impregnation. Fiber gaskets are placed between the layers of fabric. The flap of the bag is fastened with a button and two textile fasteners. There are two compartments inside the bag: a large one for a gas mask, a small one for a waterproof bag. There are two pockets for NPN and NMU on the fabric partition; on the side wall of the bag there is a loop for placing the bag on a waist belt; in this case, the shoulder belt and waist tape are put into external pockets located on the side wall.

General-arms filter gas mask PMK-2

The PMK-2 gas mask is a modernized model of the PMK gas mask. The main difference is in the design of the FPC and the unit connecting it to the mask.

The filter-absorbing box has the shape of a cylinder with a height of 9 cm and a diameter of 11.2 cm. At the neck of the FPC there is a flange with cutouts and corresponding protrusions on the fairing. An inhalation valve is installed in the neck of the FPC. During storage, the box is sealed with two stoppers. The upper plug is fixed with a fairing.

The box is inserted into the left or right hole of the mask. Sealing is ensured by outer surface necks, for which the holes in the mask have a slightly smaller diameter than the FPK neck and are thickened. A fairing is installed from the inside onto the FPK flange, with its hole directed towards the valve box. The grille is designed to prevent the cover from fitting tightly to the inlet hole in the bottom of the box.

The markings on the FPC are applied with waterproof mastic on the cylindrical part of the body: the first line is the box index E0.1.15.01; the second line is the symbol of the manufacturer, batch number, quarter and the last two digits of the year of manufacture; third line - series and number of FPK.

The MB-1-80 mask consists of a body, a seal, a spectacle unit, a valve box, two FPK connection units, a plug, a capsule-type intercom, a liquid intake system and a head cap.

The FPC connection nodes are two holes in the cheek areas of the mask. Depending on the convenience of a particular specialist working with weapons and military equipment, and individual characteristics FPK serviceman is inserted from any side. A plug is inserted into the opposite hole.

The FPK with a standard screw-on neck is connected to the MB-1-80 mask using an adapter. A set of an additional KDP cartridge with a PMK-2 gas mask is used using two adapters: one for connecting the connecting tube to the mask, the other for connecting the FPK to the additional cartridge. The remaining components, elements and components of the PMK-2 gas mask are similar to the PMK gas mask.

General-arms filter gas mask PMK-3

The PMK-3 gas mask is designed to protect the respiratory organs, face and eyes of military personnel from the effects of toxic, radioactive, highly toxic substances, bacterial agents, radioactive dust, as well as from the light radiation of a nuclear explosion. The PMK-3 gas mask can be used in all climatic zones of the Russian Federation in the summer, autumn, winter and spring periods of the year in night and day conditions, at temperatures from minus 40°C to 40°C and relative air humidity up to 98%.

Review of gas mask PMK-3
Review of PMK-3 gas mask and OZK-F kit

The PMK gas mask (deciphered as a box mask), adopted for service in the USSR in 1980, has already gone through several modifications and remains the main gas mask in Russian army to this day.

Convenient, reliable, it is capable of ensuring survival for 24 hours of continuous use in a contaminated atmosphere.

The gas mask operates under a wide range of temperatures and relative humidity, which makes it suitable for use in all climatic zones of the former USSR.

Device PMK is designed to protect respiratory system person, eyes, as well as the scalp and face from chemical warfare agents, toxic chemicals, bacterial and viral aerosols used as biological weapons, dust, including radioactive dust, light radiation from nuclear and thermonuclear explosions. The closest analogue of PMK is .

Compared to other devices, the PMC has a number of advantages, namely:

  • Simplicity of design.
  • Shelf life 15 years.
  • Light weight (960 g for PMK-3).
  • The device is equipped with a device for receiving liquid.
  • Huge resource (240 hours).
  • Excellent audibility.
  • Spectacle unit with wide view.
  • The presence of a membrane intercom.
  • The mask is comfortable, ergonomic, has a mask holder and is available in three sizes.

A sample of the PMK-2 gas mask looks like this photo:

Efficiency and ineffectiveness

Mask protects against asphyxiating chemical agents (phosgene, diphosgene), generally poisonous(hydrogen cyanide or hydrocyanic acid), non-lethal psychogenic drugs (BZ), lachrymators (CS, CR), sneezing irritants (adamsite), blister agent (mustard gas), many by-products and reagents in chemical industries, such as carbon monoxide, acid vapors, hazardous organic synthesis products, mercury vapors.

The gas mask is effective against biological aerosols, dust, visible and ultraviolet radiation.

PMC is partially effective against nerve agents (V-gases, soman, sarin, tabun). These substances are able to act through the skin “bypassing” the gas mask. The device mask does not completely cover the head, because part of the scalp remains vulnerable to mustard gas and other blister agents.

A gas mask is ineffective or ineffective against penetrating radiation, x-rays, some types of non-lethal weapons: acoustic (eg, LRAD), laser, microwave weapons (Active Denial System, etc.), flash-noise grenades.

Advantages and disadvantages, technical characteristics

The advantages are high resource, presence of intercom and drinking devices, light weight and good visibility.

Disadvantages include glass fogging and the use of cloudy anti-fog membranes, which impairs visibility. The location of the box on the side to the left creates inconvenience when running, crawling, parachuting or working in close quarters (for example, in a tank), or shooting from the left shoulder.

The gas mask remains operational at humidity from 0 to 98% and temperatures ranging from +40 to –40 degrees Celsius.

Modifications, features and operation

  • PMK-1. The predecessor of the PMK was the mask B-1, produced in the 1970s. The layout of all main components was the same as in the PMC. The first serial gas mask of this series was PMK-1, developed in the late 70s.

For the first time, trapezoidal glasses of the spectacle unit were used, not round ones, as on older models. Innovations also turned out to be non-separable intercom and drinking system. The gas masks had a box located on the side, so they were produced in left-handed and right-handed versions (for right-handed and left-handed people, respectively).

The filters for them were similar to the filters for a civilian gas mask. GB-7 and fastened with threads. The PMK-1 mask was devoid of a liner; rather low-quality films were used to prevent glass fogging.

  • PMK-2 already had two nodes for attaching a filter, which made it more versatile. The filters for this modification were bayonet type (i.e., they were attached without threads). This complicated the filter replacement process.

In a contaminated atmosphere, carry out such difficult operation, simply holding your breath and closing your eyes was impossible. But the fastening turned out to be more reliable than the thread, and the filter stopped hanging around. The remaining details were simply migrated from PMK-1 to PMK-2.

You can watch the description and instructions for assembling the PMK-2 gas mask in this video review:

  • PMK-3. Throughout the 80s designer constantly experimented with PMK, creating options for visually impaired people (anti-fog films played the role of lenses), with a spectacle assembly modified “for optics”, various hybrid options with a boxless filter system, like that of .

Based on these experiments, the PMK-3 gas mask with an enlarged spectacle assembly was created in the early 90s. In addition to the spectacle unit, it received several minor improvements that made its operation more convenient and increased reliability. This is longer and flexible tube drinking device, which does not interfere with conversation does not come into contact with the face in a free position.

The intercom is better protected from the inside thanks to metal grill, and the drinking device tube is removable and worn on a flask (in previous modifications it was part of the mask and could not be removed).

The cuffs of the PMK-3 spectacle assembly are not entirely poorly designed and limit the field of view. Bayonet filters.

  • PMK-4 differs in the spectacle unit, which is a single monoblock, like its Western counterparts (for example, M 50). The filters are still attached from the sides, but the designers have returned to a threaded mount, which is why bayonet filters have to be attached through a special adapter.

Presumably, PMK-4 will replace the third modification, but for now it has only appeared during military exercises. The PMK-4 has no civilian analogues.

  • PMK-5- analogue of a civilian gas mask GP-21. These models differ in their equipment, namely a bag and filters. The gas mask is available in 2 sizes, has a flexible spectacle assembly in the form of a monoblock, and a threaded mount for filters.

Main characteristics

The equipment and basic characteristics of all PMK gas masks are practically the same.

  • Breathing resistance during inhalation at a constant air flow rate of 30 l/min, (Pa) mm water. Art. - 180 (18),
  • Maximum resource - 240 hours,
  • The maximum duration of continuous stay is 24 hours,
  • Speech intelligibility - 95%,
  • Operating temperature range, °C - 40 + 40 (in some sources up to +50)
  • Dimensions, mm: 310×180×180
  • Weight without bag - 960 g.
  • Shelf life - 15 years.

Equipment

The updated package includes:

The PMK series device is assembled as follows: if there are 2 units for filter boxes, then one of them is hermetically sealed with a plug, and the box is connected to the second. The mask is taken in one hand, and the box is attached with the other hand. The box is screwed all the way for models with threaded connection(PMK models 1, 4 and 5).

For boxes with a bayonet mount on the neck there is a flange with cutouts for protrusions on the fairing. To attach such a box, you need to align the cutouts with the protrusions, insert the filter neck and turn clockwise until it stops.

Then a cover is put on the filter to protect it from dust and moisture. Adapters are made and allow you to combine masks with a bayonet mount with filters on the thread, and vice versa. Thus, filters become universal.

The drinking device is used by screwing it onto the flask until it stops. It is prohibited to use the drinking device in an atmosphere contaminated with radioactive dust..

PMCs serve for a long time, are reliable, provide good audibility and visibility, are equipped with an intercom and are quite versatile.

High resource and drinking device allow you to wear a gas mask 24 hours a day. The series has undergone a number of improvements and modifications, and today the PMK-3 model is in service, which will soon be replaced by the more modern PMK-4. Therefore, PMK gas masks are popular among history buffs, “survivalists” and tourism enthusiasts in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
