High-quality glazing requires serious consideration and is impossible without proper insulation of the gap between the opening and the window. Often, organizations that install translucent structures limit themselves to traditional polyurethane foam, which is subsequently covered with plaster or other finishing materials. This approach has proven itself relatively well and in some cases does not cause any complaints from the consumer throughout the entire service life of the window.

However, glazing with one level of sealing of the opening does not meet the state requirements for the quality of services or goods provided, that is, GOST. To comply with these requirements, additional insulation is required at the junction of the window and the opening both from the street side and from the room side. Such insulation is ensured using special mounting tapes.

Scheme for using mounting tapes on windows
View from above

Mounting tape for windows is a self-adhesive material on a polymer or tissue based, designed for additional sealing of window or door openings.

Types of mounting tapes for windows

The functions performed by the tapes are different and depend on the location of gluing, the condition of the opening, the features of the future finishing of the slopes, as well as the requirements for the window block. Next, we will consider the most commonly used materials common in the modern construction market.

PSUL

Pre-compressed sealing tape is used primarily on the outside of translucent structures. Its main purpose is to ensure unimpeded drainage of moisture from the area where the hatch connects to the opening.

Essentially, this is a tape product made of elastic polyurethane foam (looks like foam rubber), usually gray or black. One side of the material is covered adhesive composition, isolated with a protective film. The tape is supplied twisted into compact reels or rolls (depending on the size), which need to be unwound only during the installation process, since the material loses its quality over time.

An example of tape expansion over time

The main feature is the ability to fill joints as a result of expansion, which occurs as a result of contact with air. The tape seals the gap from moisture and external influences With outside, while simultaneously allowing excess liquid from the inside to evaporate.

Scope of application of PSUL:

  • Additional sealing of interfaces between elements of prefabricated structures;
  • Sealing the gap between the frame and the opening when installing windows and doors;
  • Insulation of joints between small-sized moving units of building facades;
  • Filling the external seam between the slope and the frame during the installation of PVC windows.

It is important to understand that to fill the gap efficiently, you need a tape of the appropriate size. For example, if the task is to seal a joint with a maximum width of 40 mm, you will need a PSUL with a nominal size of 45-50 mm.

Water vapor barrier (GPL)

This type of tape product is most popular when installing window blocks. Among its main features it is worth highlighting the following:

  • Water vapor barrier mounting tape is designed to seal joints on the room side.
  • The most commonly used self-adhesive material is polyethylene film. On one side the tape is equipped with a foil coating, and on the other - with an adhesive composition.
  • The adhesive used provides reliable fixation on most surfaces (concrete, brick, cinder block, wood and others). The products of some brands have poor adhesion to foam blocks and aerated concrete, so before purchasing you should consult the seller or read the attached instructions.
  • The structure of the material prevents the penetration of moisture or air both through the tape itself and through the gluing points. This ensures the maximum possible tightness of the joint of the opening and, as a result, the structure as a whole.
  • In addition to insulating from moisture, the tape does not deteriorate during prolonged contact with ultraviolet radiation and is not subject to destruction from exposure to aggressive environments (household acids, alkalis and other reagents).

GPL is used for waterproofing installation gaps that arise when installing window and door units, as well as for sealing structures made of metal, wood, concrete and plastic.

GPL-S and insulated GPL

VM (VM+) tape

  • VM. Vapor barrier tape, designed for sealing joints indoors. It is used in cases where wet finishing of slopes is planned (plastering or decorating tiles). Provides protection from moisture entering the joint of the opening and reliable fixation of the finishing coating.
  • VM+. A modified analogue of the previous product with similar properties. Features the best waterproofing qualities, which allows it to be used in rooms with high humidity (kitchens, showers).

VS (VS+) tape

Diffuse (vapor-permeable waterproofing tape)

It is used outside structures in conjunction with pre-compressed tape or in situations where it is impossible to use the latter. Traditionally, diffuse tape is used to isolate the area where the molding profile is attached, since PSUL cannot be glued to the place where it is fixed, but there are also frequent cases of use along the entire perimeter of the window block.

The structure of the diffuse tape prevents the penetration of moisture and cold air into the assembly joint; in addition, the material protects the polyurethane foam from the effects of solar ultraviolet radiation. In addition to its protective qualities, the tape has the property of allowing vapor formations to pass through. inside the junction of the frame and the slope, thus providing the necessary ventilation for this section of the structure.

Butyl rubber tape

Butyl rubber, used as the base of the tape, is a fairly elastic material with high adhesion to most surfaces. It is fixed equally firmly on stone, wood or plastic. It is also worth noting that it is environmentally friendly and almost completely harmless to the consumer. The main disadvantage is the flammability of butyl rubber, which requires compliance with appropriate standards for installation and subsequent operation.

Used as insulating material from the inside of the structure. Glued to the bottom of the window sill profile as additional protection against blowing from outside and steam penetration inside assembly seam from the side of the room.

Installation features

The tape is applied both before fixing the window block in the opening and after installed structures. The first option is more convenient in cases with the installation of external insulation.

Let's consider the algorithm for using tape insulation using the example of gluing pre-compressed sealing tape (PSUL) and internal GPL-S with an additional strip of double-sided tape:

It should be remembered that the tape must be selected in accordance with weather conditions. Working in winter time, it is possible to glue only material intended for use in low temperature conditions.

Salute, readers!

I love thematic forums, where everyone has their own opinion and teaches others.

What battles sometimes flare up there!

This time, at one of these forums, I was able to witness a debate about the need to use vapor barrier tape.

One forum member, foaming at the mouth, argued that it was not needed and this was a good advertising ploy for one of the Western companies, another explained why it would be bad without it.

If you don’t yet know what a vapor barrier tape is, then this topic is just for you.

Welcome!

Vapor barrier tapes for windows, like good finish slopes and installation seams will ensure decent window performance. In order for the window in your home to function well and for a long time, you should not miss such a moment as installing a vapor barrier tape.

The use of sealed tapes to isolate the assembly seam from vapors and moisture in the adjacent room prevents condensation from escaping onto the slopes.

If you have a kitchen, a room with a swimming pool or a bathhouse, then installing vapor barrier tape on your windows is a must.

Types of vapor barrier tape

Tapes can be either with one or two adhesive strips. Two adhesive strips are intended for attaching the tape with one side to the window and the other to the wall.

Vapor barrier tapes are also classified according to weather periods:

The width of the tape also varies depending on needs, which allows you to ensure reliable vapor barrier seams of various sizes. When choosing vapor barrier tapes, keep in mind that its width should be about 45 mm greater than the width of the installation seam.

Tapes for outdoor work consist of foamed materials (this work requires well-sealing materials with plaster mortar, which will provide the required vapor barrier of the outer layer).

Vapor barrier tape can be butyl rubber, for sealing interpanel joints or for installing door or window blocks.

This tape contains non-woven fabric. During installation, it is primed, plastered and painted. This type also self-adhesive.

To protect against high humidity of the installation seam for dry finishing of slopes, there are metallized vapor barrier tapes on the market.

General information on installing vapor barrier tape

  • Initially, you need to prepare your opening: clean the internal and external surfaces of the opening and frame from dirt, dust and other debris. The frame is inserted into the opening and is temporarily not secured.
  • Then gently mark a line on the frame for attaching the vapor barrier tape.
  • After carrying out the calculations and marking the window, we remove the frame and glue our internal vapor barrier tapes. We do not remove the paper strip that protects the inner adhesive layer, which will subsequently attach to the walls.

As a rule, the installation of a vapor barrier tape on a structure is carried out before the seam foams.

Helpful advice!

Therefore, before finishing, moistening and filling with foam, you can remove the protective paper strips from vapor barrier tapes.

This will allow you not to lose the adhesive properties of the tape. If you are driving hidden installation, then the tape should be attached to the ends of the structure from above and on the sides, and to the installation profile from below.

  • External thermal insulation tapes can be glued no earlier than the polyurethane foam has been completely polymerized.
  • Installation of vapor barrier tape under the window sill can be done in last resort. When installing a vapor barrier tape under a plaster layer, the tape must have an outer coating, which will ensure the necessary adhesion to this plaster layer.

If there is a window quarter with gaps between the frame and the wall, another technique is used: the uneven joint can be covered with a window strip, and a vapor barrier tape can be applied to it.

Installation of vapor barrier tape on windows is installed in a continuous layer along the entire contour of the opening.

Do not forget that the use of finishing building materials in combination with a vapor barrier tape is allowed only if the moisture-permeable characteristics are met.

For internal sealing of the assembly seam, the following is used:

a) vapor barrier tape (duplicated) based on aluminum foil, laminated with non-woven fabric, allows you to protect the installation seam from the inside from moisture and prevents it from escaping from the seam onto the surface of the internal slopes.

For easy and reliable fixation, the tape contains two adhesive strips of glue and butyl, located on two different sides. It is recommended to use it around the entire perimeter of the window for subsequent finishing of slopes using a dry method.

b) the vapor-tight sealing tape is made of non-woven fabric coated with a self-adhesive plastic-elastic mass based on butyl rubber with a high degree of adhesiveness.

The peculiarity of butyl rubber tapes is their fairly heavy weight. And, if you compare tapes made of butyl rubber and reinforced foil with the same width of 120 mm, it turns out that reinforced foil tape is almost 5 times lighter than butyl rubber tape.

The low weight of the tapes makes it easier to work with them during installation, and also significantly reduces transportation costs when transporting tapes over long distances.

However, tapes based on reinforced foil with adhesive strips have adhesion only to a well-cleaned and degreased surface of the internal slope, while butyl rubber tapes have a tighter fit and better adhesion to the wall opening.

To install the internal vapor barrier sealing tape, you must do the following:

  1. Cut the tape into pieces equal to the width and length of the window +10 cm (to form corner connections). Joining of tapes along the length is allowed “overlapping”, at least ½ of the width of the tape.
  2. Remove the protective paper from the vapor barrier tape from the side of the duplicated strip and glue it to the frame profile with outside.
  3. The tape is attached using a self-adhesive duplicated mounting strip in a taut state (tightly, without folds or bulges) to outer surface boxes from the inside vertically and horizontally on the ceiling. The inner edge of the adhesive layer must coincide with the inner edge of the frame. The tape protecting the butyl rubber layer is not removed at this stage of installation.

The adhesive strip has a fairly high resistance to low temperatures without loss of adhesive properties.

Lack of adhesion may occur if the acrylic adhesive strip long time kept in the cold with the release paper removed.

Also, the adhesion of the adhesive strip is reduced when working with cold window blocks, since when a worker breathes, steam (moisture) is released, which partially condenses on the surface of the cold window block, which also reduces the adhesion of the adhesive strips.

To prevent this defect, it is recommended to keep the adhesive layers with the anti-adhesive paper removed for the minimum possible time, and also to wipe the surface of the window block with a dry rag or paper napkin immediately before gluing the tapes to it.

Question: How to properly use vapor barrier tape for PVC windows and at what temperature?

Answer: Installation of vapor barrier tapes on plastic windows is carried out as usual in those rooms where there is high air humidity - kitchen, bathhouse, swimming pool.

The tape allows you to protect the installation seam from moisture and steam emanating from the room and thus prevents condensation from escaping onto the window slopes. Vapor barrier tapes are produced with one or two adhesive strips.

The tape with two adhesive strips is very convenient to attach to the window and to the slope. Vapor barrier tapes are divided into summer and winter, depending on weather conditions in room.

Summer tapes can be used at air temperatures from +5 to +35C, and winter tapes at air temperatures below 0 degrees. You need to choose a tape for windows of such a width that it is 45 millimeters wider than the width of the mounting seam. This will allow you to ensure reliable vapor barrier at the installation seams of your windows.

The technology for installing windows and using vapor barrier tape is as follows. We clean the opening from dirt and dust, install the window frame and, without securing it, mark the lines for attaching the vapor barrier tape on the walls of the opening and on the window frame.

We remove the frame from the opening and glue a vapor barrier tape onto it; we do not remove the protective strip on the part that will be glued to the wall!

Greetings!

Today we will touch upon a controversial topic. Is vapor barrier tape necessary when installing PVC windows?

I think you will be interested to know what it is and why it is needed.

Vapor barrier tapes are designed to improve the performance characteristics of window structures. The effect of their installation is comparable to high-quality finishing of slopes or laying construction joints. Installing such tapes will help prolong the functioning of the windows; you should under no circumstances refuse to install them.
Sealed tapes provide insulation of the assembly seam from excess moisture and steam; they prevent the movement of condensate onto the slopes of the window structure. Installation of such a tape is necessary if you have a kitchen, bathhouse or room with a swimming pool.

Types of vapor barrier tape

There are two main types of material: with one and two adhesive surfaces.

A tape with two adhesive surfaces, one side is attached to the wall and the other to the window.

There is a classification of tapes based on seasonality:

  • for summer, can withstand temperatures of 5-35 degrees;
  • for winter, suitable for temperatures below 0.

The width of the tape depends on the structural features of the profile, a wide range allows you to choose the option for seams different sizes. When choosing a tape, it is necessary to take into account that its width should be approximately 45 mm greater than the width of the assembly seam.

The composition of the tape for outdoor work includes foam materials, V in this case sealing compounds with plaster mortar are used to provide the required level of vapor barrier.

Vapor barrier tapes can be made from butyl rubber, they are used for sealing interpanel joints, as well as when installing windows and doors.
This tape consists of a non-woven fabric; during installation it undergoes priming, plastering and painting; this type also belongs to the group of self-adhesive ones.

Metallized vapor barrier tapes are also available on the market; they are designed to protect the installation seam of slopes for dry finishing from moisture.

Information about self-adhesive sealing waterproofing tape in the video:

General information on installing vapor barrier tape

The process can be divided into the following stages of work:

  • prepare the opening, clean it of dust, dirt and debris, insert the frame into the opening without temporarily securing it;
  • Carefully mark a line on the frame for mounting the tape;
  • carry out calculations, apply markings with the window, stick internal vapor barrier tapes onto the removed frame (the protective paper strip covering the adhesive must remain in place, it should not be removed.)

In accordance with the rules, the installation of vapor barrier tape is carried out before foaming the seam.
Before finishing, moistening and filling polyurethane foam protective paper strips must be removed.

This is necessary to maintain the adhesive properties of the tape. When carrying out hidden installation from below, the strip is attached to the installation profile, on the sides and on top to the ends of the structure.

The following features must be taken into account:

  • external tapes are glued after complete polymerization of the polyurethane foam;
  • installation of the vapor barrier strip under the window sill is carried out at the final stage;
  • When installing a vapor barrier strip under a layer of plaster, special requirements are placed on the outer coating of the tape; it must provide the required level of adhesion between the surfaces being connected.

If there are gaps between the wall and the frame of the window quarter, another technique is used: the uneven joint must be covered with a special window strip, after which a vapor barrier tape is applied.
Vapor barrier tape is glued around the entire perimeter of the window opening in a continuous layer.
It is also necessary to take into account that the use of finishing building materials together with vapor barrier tape is recommended only if certain moisture permeability characteristics are met.

Foil self-adhesive hydro-steam heat-insulating tape

Self-adhesive GPL strip allows you to solve problems associated with steam, hydro and thermal insulation of joints, assembly seams, junctions and joints in a wide variety of building structures - door and window blocks, plastic, concrete and metal products.

The vapor barrier layer provides the necessary level of waterproofing, which prevents the formation of mold, fungi and spores, resulting in an increase in the service life of any structure.

Advantages:

  • significant reduction in heat loss;
  • significant reduction in energy costs;
  • ease of installation achieved due to the adhesive layer;
  • ensuring reliable fastening of the film to building materials all types.

GPL - foil self-adhesive hydro-steam heat-insulating tape(width 90,120,150,200 mm, supplied in boxes measuring 420x420x600 mm). The choice of width depends on the design features of the window profile.

Installation steps:

  • clean, dry and degrease the surfaces to be treated, unwind the roll, cut the tape into pieces of the required size;
  • After removing the protective film, stick the film onto the surface, pressing tightly with your hands and without stretching, smooth it with a roller, avoiding the formation of air bubbles.

Work must be carried out at a temperature not lower than +10°C.

Self-adhesive steam-, hydro-, and heat-insulating tapes consist of foamed laminated polyethylene, with a layer of metallized polypropylene film applied on one side. On the other hand, a special waterproof adhesive ensures reliable fastening of the material to structures made of metal, brick, concrete, wood, plastic, etc.

So, as the basis of the tape is foamed polyethylene, which has excellent thermal insulation characteristics, closed cell structure provides extremely low level hydroscopicity, which guarantees a high level of moisture resistance.

Polyethylene foam gives the film elasticity, which is very important when sealing uneven seams. Metallized polypropylene tape is intended for finishing the outer layer.
The advantages of polypropylene film include a high level of mechanical strength; the material is also resistant to organic solvents, acids and alkalis. Thereby provided reliable protection reflective layer from damage and oxidation.

Polypropylene film also has good vapor barrier properties.

The sticky layer is a waterproof synthetic rubber adhesive with increased adhesion to different materials, which allows the use of vapor barrier strips without surface preparation.
The siliconized film protects the adhesive layer from sticking together in the roll.

T PVC window installation technology using vapor barrier tape in the video:

Installation of internal vapor barrier sealing tape

For internal sealing of the assembly seam, a vapor barrier (duplicated) strip is used.

A vapor barrier (duplicated) strip, made on the basis of aluminum foil laminated with non-woven fabric, provides the required level of moisture insulation of the installation seam and is a reliable barrier to the escape of moisture onto the surface of the internal slopes.

Two adhesive strips made of butyl and glue located on different sides allow for easy and reliable fixation. It is recommended to stick the tape around the entire perimeter of the window structure for finishing slopes using the dry method., which will be held at next stage.

In the production of vapor-tight sealing strips, a non-woven fabric coated with a self-adhesive plastic-elastic mass made on the basis of adhesive butyl rubber is used.
The main feature of butyl rubber strips is their heavy weight. When comparing butyl rubber tape and reinforced foil of the same width of 120 mm, it turns out that reinforced foil is almost five times lighter.

The low weight of the foil greatly simplifies the installation process, which reduces transportation costs when transporting material over long distances.

Vapor barrier tapes with adhesive strips made on the basis of reinforced foil are distinguished by high adhesive properties only if the surface of the internal slope is well cleaned and degreased. Butyl rubber strips have better adhesion and a tighter fit to the wall opening. All these characteristics must be taken into account when choosing one option or another; if necessary, you can always consult a specialist.

Installation steps for internal vapor barrier sealing tape:

  • cut the material into pieces taking into account the length and width of the window structure (for corner joints), the joining of the strips along the length is carried out with an overlap, at least half of its width;
  • remove the protective paper from the duplicated strip and stick it on the outside of the frame;
  • installation of the strip is carried out using a self-adhesive mounting strip in a tensioned state (without bulges and folds, as much as possible) to the outer surface window box from the inside along the ceiling horizontal and vertical.

The inner edge of the adhesive surface and the inner edge of the frame must match exactly; the protective tape is not removed at this stage.

The adhesive strip is different high stability to cold temperatures while maintaining adhesive properties.

Deterioration of adhesion can be affected by prolonged exposure to cold acrylic adhesive tape with release paper removed.

Working with cold window structures can also negatively affect adhesion, since when workers breathe, steam is released from their mouths, which partially condenses on the surface of the block, resulting in reduced adhesion of the adhesive surface.

In order to prevent this phenomenon, the interval between removing the anti-adhesive paper and directly gluing the tape should be minimal. Before gluing the tape, you must also wipe the surface of the window block with a paper napkin or dry rag.

Proper use on PVC windows

Question: How to properly use vapor barrier tape for PVC window structures, what should the temperature be?
Answer: Installation of vapor barrier tapes on plastic window structures is carried out as usual in rooms with high level humidity (swimming pool, sauna, kitchen).

The material protects the installation seam from the penetration of steam and moisture emanating from the room; the tape thus prevents condensation from escaping onto the window slopes. The vapor barrier strip may have one or two adhesive surfaces.
The tape with two adhesive surfaces is conveniently attached to slopes and windows. All vapor barrier tapes are divided into winter and summer, the choice depends on the time of year and weather conditions.

Summer tapes are designed for use at temperatures of 5-35 degrees, while winter tapes have proven themselves to be excellent in conditions below zero. The width plays an important role when choosing a tape; it should be 45 mm greater than the width of the assembly seam. Compliance with this condition will help achieve the required level of vapor barrier.

The technology for installing windows and gluing vapor barrier tape consists of several stages.

Necessary:

  • clean the window opening from dust and dirt, install the frame without fastening it, mark the installation lines of the vapor barrier tape on the frame and walls of the opening;
  • pull the frame out of the opening, stick the tape on it without removing the protective strip from the area intended for gluing to the wall.

Installation of vapor barrier tape on a plastic window is carried out in one piece; breaks are unacceptable.

The next stage involves assembling the window structure with sashes and major installation into the opening. At the final stage, the vapor barrier strip is glued to the window sill.

Water vapor barrier tape (GPL)

Self-adhesive tape GPL steam-, hydro-, heat-insulating. The material consists of foamed laminated polyethylene, the tape is covered with a metallized polypropylene film on one side, and a special adhesive is applied on the other side. The adhesive composition ensures reliable fastening of the tape to structures made of metal, brick, concrete, wood, plastic, etc.
The base is foamed polyethylene, characterized by unique thermal insulation characteristics. An extremely low level of hydroscopicity is achieved due to the closed cellular structure; the material practically does not absorb water.
The elasticity of the tape is achieved through the use of polyethylene foam, which is important when sealing seams with unevenness. The outer layer is a metallized polypropylene film.

Polypropylene film is characterized by increased strength and resistance to organic solvents, acids and alkalis. Thereby provides reliable protection of the reflective layer from damage and oxidation processes.

In addition, polypropylene film has excellent vapor barrier properties.

The siliconized film protects the sticky layer from sticking together in the roll.
Scope of application: steam, hydro and thermal insulation of joints and assembly seams in building structures - door and window blocks, metal, concrete, wooden and plastic products.

Window tape

The assortment includes big choice high-quality window tapes, in a wide variety of sizes and in required quantity. Interior and exterior window tape is widely used in most different areas construction and installation.

Window tape is a reliable connecting element, along the entire surface of which small holes are made in accordance with waterproofing standards. A wide selection of standard sizes allows you to choose an option for a wide variety of designs.

High quality window tapes

Window tape is a reliable connecting element with small holes located across its entire surface.

In the manufacture of perforated tape, polyethylene foam is used High Quality, the scope of use is determined by the manufacturing technology. One of the areas of application is the installation of ventilation elements.

Effective filtration of dirt and dust from the street is achieved through holes through which accumulated condensate also exits.

Thanks to these features, a unique microclimate is created in the room, The price of mounting tape is not very high, which is one of the advantages of the material.
The advantages of window tapes also include accelerating the pace of construction; you cannot do without them when fastening parts with different expansion coefficients.

The advantage of double-sided window tapes is their increased level of elasticity, which is important during temperature changes.

Vapor-permeable diffusion tapes are also produced, which are used to create effective ventilation and have an excellent level of moisture resistance.

Diffuse tape made of artificial membrane material is indispensable in the process of waterproofing installation seams and joints. The tape can have one or two adhesive strips; when choosing, it is necessary to take into account the construction tasks and the features of the window design. One of the strips is attached to the translucent structure, the other to the slope or wall surface.
A wide selection of standard sizes allows you to quickly select the right option for any building structure. Window tapes are equally well suited for both internal and external insulation during installation.

Innovative technology involves performing insulation in several layers: that is why there is a distinction between external and internal window tapes.

Interior window tape made from flexible material, has adhesive strips, it is specially designed to protect the seam from steam and moisture from the inside.
While creating outer tape waterproofing standards on the outside of the seam were taken into account.

Both types of material allow you to achieve the required level of moisture insulation while maintaining vapor permeability and protecting the structure from condensation.

Vapor barrier tapes for windows, as well as good finishing of slopes and installation seams, will ensure decent window performance.

Varieties

Tapes can be either with one or two adhesive strips. Two adhesive strips are intended for attaching the tape with one side to the window and the other to the wall.

Installation of vapor barrier tape

Also vapor barrier tapes are classified according to weather periods:

  • for summer with air temperatures from + 5°C to + 35°C;
  • for winter with temperatures below 0°C.

Tape width also varies depending on needs, which makes it possible to provide reliable vapor barrier for seams of various sizes. When choosing vapor barrier tapes, keep in mind that its width should be about 45 mm greater than the width of the installation seam.

Outdoor tapes consist of foamed materials (this work requires well-sealing materials with plaster mortar, which will provide the required vapor barrier of the outer layer).

Vapor barrier tape can be butyl rubber, for sealing interpanel joints or for installing door or window blocks. This tape contains non-woven fabric. During installation, it is primed, plastered and painted. This type is also self-adhesive.

To protect the installation joint from high humidity for dry finishing of slopes, there are metallized vapor barrier tapes.

Installed vapor barrier tape

Therefore, before finishing, dampening and filling with foam, you can remove the protective paper strips from the vapor barrier tapes. This will allow you not to lose the adhesive properties of the tape. If you are carrying out a hidden installation, then the tape should be attached to the ends of the structure from above and on the sides, and to the installation profile from below.

  • External thermal insulation tapes can be glued no earlier than the polyurethane foam has been completely polymerized.
  • Installing a vapor barrier tape under the window sill can be done last. When installing a vapor barrier tape under a plaster layer, the tape must have an outer coating, which will ensure the necessary adhesion to this plaster layer.

In that case if the window quarter has gaps between the frame and the wall, another technique is used: the uneven joint can be covered with a window strip, and a vapor barrier tape can be glued onto it. Installation of vapor barrier tape on windows is installed in a continuous layer along the entire contour of the opening.

Do not forget that the use of finishing building materials in combination with a vapor barrier tape is allowed only if the moisture-permeable characteristics are met.

Waterproofing tape for PVC windows, as well as other installation materials, are used relatively rarely: their use increases the cost of work, since a set of high-quality mounting tapes for installing one structure costs approximately 15 - 25% of the cost of the entire window.

And yet, if you plan to glaze the house “for yourself,” using modern materials is not only possible, but also necessary. That is why I decided to write a short review on mounting tapes, their purpose and correct use.

Purpose of mounting tapes

If we approach it from a formal point of view, then use special vapor-permeable and vapor barrier materials for PVC installation designs are necessary primarily to meet the requirements of industry standards. The use of tapes is regulated by the following documents:

  • GOST R 53338-2009 “Vapour-permeable, self-expanding, self-adhesive tapes for construction purposes”;
  • GOST 30971-2012 “Mounting seams of junctions of window blocks to wall openings. General technical conditions";
  • GOST R 52749-2007 “Window installation joints with vapor-permeable self-expanding tapes.”

That is, it is basically impossible to install windows according to GOST without using tapes. But there are also rational explanations for the need to use such materials. Some of them are set out in the already mentioned GOSTs, and some can be formulated based on many years of experience in the installation, repair and operation of translucent structures:

  1. To seal the joint between the window and the window opening, self-expanding foam based on liquid polyurethane is used. Despite having a number of objective advantages, foam also has disadvantages - first of all, it is vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation.
  2. To protect the foam from UV radiation, self-adhesive tape is used, which covers the mounting seam from the outside.

  1. The next aspect that justifies the need to use special tapes for installation is ventilation, or more precisely, liquid drainage. When operating the window without additional protection, which is formed in the room, partially collects inside the assembly seam, reducing the efficiency of heat conservation. To avoid this, it can be used to seal it from inside the room. vapor barrier material.
  2. However, it is important not only to protect the foam from moisture, but also to ensure the unimpeded escape of water vapor beyond the assembly seam. For this purpose, exclusively vapor-permeable tape is used for exterior finishing, which guarantees normal diffusion of moist air .

The question of whether it is necessary to glue a vapor barrier tape or use a vapor-permeable material is largely debatable. On the one hand, the efficiency of these materials is really quite high, so their use in installation will clearly affect the functionality of the window in the best possible way.

On the other hand, the price of mounting tapes is also quite high, so to save money you can choose other methods: from the inside, for example, install a slope made of plastic (in principle, it provides good hydro- and vapor barrier), and from the outside, finish the installation seam with vapor-permeable plaster followed by painting .

And yet I repeat: the use of special tapes when installing a window structure into an opening is completely justified both from the point of view of standards and from the point of view of optimizing the indoor climate.

Types of materials

Type 1. Water vapor barrier tape

A variety of tapes are used for installing PVC windows. Each type of such material has its own characteristics and advantages, therefore, to achieve maximum effect materials should be combined to combine their functional advantages in the best possible way.

I’ll start my review of materials used when installing windows with the most popular - water vapor barrier tape:

  1. Self-adhesive water vapor barrier installation tape (GPL) is a tape material that covers the installation gap on the room side.
  2. The basis of the tape is polyethylene or polyethylene foam film. On one side, the plank is laminated with a thin layer of aluminum foil, and on the other, one or two strips of adhesive are applied for installation.
  3. The adhesive mixture used for application provides good adhesion to most materials - wood, concrete, brick, etc. Problems may arise when trying to cover an opening made of gas or foam concrete, so before purchasing installation material, I recommend consulting with the seller or carefully studying what the manufacturer’s instructions say about this .
  4. The structure of the tape ensures almost complete tightness of the finished assembly seam: neither the gluing area nor the polyethylene strip itself allows air and water vapor to pass through.

  1. The polymer structure provides the product with additional advantages: finishing material It is not afraid not only of moisture, but also of acids, alkalis, and other chemically active substances, and also does not degrade under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

Type 2. Insulated water vapor barrier tape

Insulated tape is, in fact, a modification of a conventional water vapor barrier material. Its key features include:

  • increased thickness of the base, which is made exclusively from foamed polyethylene;
  • a denser foil layer based on a durable polypropylene film.

Thanks to these design features:

  1. The product is no worse at preventing the diffusion of liquid and water vapor and the penetration of moisture into the middle part of the assembly seam. This ensures the most effective hydro- and vapor barrier.
  2. The increased thickness of the base and its porous structure help reduce heat loss. Foamed polyethylene acts as window insulation.
  3. Finally, the foil coating also plays an important role. Thin layer metal on an elastic base reflects infrared radiation, performing the function of a “thermal mirror”. However, most of the heat generated heating devices, returns to the room.

On to the cons similar products I would consider their dimensions to be quite large: finishing the installation gap with insulated tapes requires subsequent masking of the junction unit using slopes, which is not always included in our plans.

Type 3. Pre-compressed tape (PSUL)

Another universal material– PSUL (pre-compressed sealing tape). This material is used to ensure self-ventilation of the installation seam:

  1. The tape is a strip of porous polyurethane foam impregnated with a special composition. On one side the strip is equipped adhesive layer, protected by a special protective coating.
  2. The product is supplied in rolled form (rolls or reels). It is necessary to unwind the material immediately before installation, since over time the product loses its properties.
  3. During installation protective covering is removed and the PSUL is glued to the window structure. After this, the impregnation reacts with air, due to which the linear dimensions products. The tape expands and completely covers the installation gap.

Complete and high-quality overlap is possible only if the nominal size of the product specified by the manufacturer corresponds to the dimensions of the gap. So, for example, if I need to seal a 35 mm gap with my own hands, then for work I take a PSUL about 40 mm wide.

  1. After expansion, the material becomes completely vapor permeable. This ensures unimpeded exit of water from the assembly seam.

Type 4. Inner tapes

In addition to the varieties indicated for interior decoration other products are also used on slopes. It is convenient to analyze their main features using the table, which I will give below:

Marking Description
Sun A product that you use for installing window structures if you plan to finish slopes using a dry method (plasterboard, plastic, lining, etc.).

Provides effective vapor barrier and prevents moisture from entering the thickness of the assembly joint.

The tape is installed using a self-adhesive layer with a protective coating.

VS+ It is used for the same purposes as BC tape, but is thicker.

An additional advantage is the presence of a foil layer, which provides more effective vapor and heat insulation.

VM A hydro- and vapor barrier material, which is used if it is planned to plaster the slopes on the inside of the window opening.

We protect the mounting foam from moisture, while ensuring maximum adhesion to the plaster mass.

VM+ More effective variety the previous product is used for the same purposes. Key Feature is increased resistance to moisture.

Other types of mounting tapes

In addition to the products described above, other types of tapes are used for the installation of translucent structures:

  1. Diffusion tape for exterior finishing. Used in combination with PSUL or polyurethane foam. Provides protection of the assembly seam from moisture and ultraviolet radiation while maintaining vapor permeability. Finishing the junction unit with diffuse material allows you to maintain a natural level of ventilation: air will freely flow out from the middle part of the installation gap.

  1. Butyl rubber mounting tape under the window sill. As the name suggests, it is used to seal the junction under the window sill and protect the insulation from blowing, moisture and heat loss. Like other materials in this category, installation is carried out using a self-adhesive layer.
  2. Non-woven material for installation under low tide. It has high vapor permeability and is glued to the base of the opening under the drainage strip. In addition to providing ventilation, it significantly reduces the noise of galvanized metal flashings, acting as a shock absorber and dampening some of the loud sounds.
  3. Adhesive tape is a universal material that is used for installing lightweight structures. For example, self-adhesive reflective film is popular, and mosquito net with fastening tape is also very convenient to use.

How to use it correctly?

Application technology installation years When installing PVC profile windows, it is quite simple. I use the following algorithm:

  1. First I prepare the opening: I remove old design, I level the walls, remove dust and dry all surfaces. It is desirable that the edges of the opening be more or less even, therefore, before installing the window, it may be necessary to refine them using a quickly hardening solution.
  2. Then I cut water vapor barrier tapes, PSUL and diffuse material. I cut the products along the length of each side of the window with an overlap of at least 10 cm (these areas are used to form the corner joint).

  1. I paste the tapes onto the window frame, removing the protective film from one of the adhesive strips. I glue PSUL in a compressed state onto the front surface of the structure from the outside.

It is desirable that the PSUL be completely hidden behind the wall fence, so before gluing, I usually fit the window to the opening, making marks at the installation site.

  1. I install the structure in the opening and fix it using the chosen method - either using anchors or using mounting plates.

  1. I fill all the gaps with self-expanding polyurethane foam.
  2. I remove the protective strips from the inner and outer tape and glue their edges to the opening, completely covering the foam.
  3. If installation is carried out in winter, I use specialized materials with glue that retains adhesive ability at subzero temperatures.

  1. Before installation additional elements I separately glue to the support profile or the bottom of the frame a material that protects the space under the window sill and under the drainage strip.
  2. At low tide, I stick a PSUL strip onto a horizontal surface: it acts as a shock absorber, and therefore the metal canopy will not rattle when there are gusts of wind or raindrops hit it.

Cost of materials

As I noted at the very beginning, high price mounting tapes partially limit their distribution. But at the same time, if you know exactly what you need, there is a chance to fit within the budget allocated for glazing.

Conclusion

Both vapor-permeable and vapor barrier tape for plastic windows may not be included in the required set of parts for successful installation. But their use allows you to fully comply with GOST requirements. And also ensure the formation of a favorable microclimate in the room - primarily through the normalization of the installation seam.

The video in this article will help you master the technology of using such parts, and when choosing a product, you can consult with me and other experts by asking questions in the comments.
