Winter in our region is almost always snowy and cold. Remember how much trouble snowdrifts near the house cause! Cleaning them with a shovel is a thankless and very tedious task. When you know how to choose a snow blower and have already acquired such a device, the problem of snow blockages is solved in an instant. Why, you still haven’t made a homemade snow blower with your own hands? Then we go to you!

Standard snow removal equipment is prohibitively expensive, and not every buyer can afford it. In this regard, a question that is quite relevant for winter arises: how to make a snow blower yourself? In this article you will find an overview of snow blowers, as well as a detailed diagram of the manufacture of such a device.

How snow removal machines work

A snow blower for home can be electric or gasoline. The difference is in the way they are powered: the former run on electricity, the latter use gasoline. The structure of a snow blower and the essence of its work look like this. A rotating mechanism collects piles of snow and then pushes it in the desired direction. Based on this, all snow removal equipment is divided into single-stage and two-stage machines. In the first case, the force created by the auger (has fast speed rotation), in the second the rotor is also connected to the work. Such equipment is called rotary snow blowers.

The rotor stands at the entrance of the outlet chute, rotates and pushes out the snow. The auger spins at a much lower speed and therefore wears out much more slowly. An auger is a mechanism that crushes snow and then directs it into the snow blower. You can find the auger in the front of the device. It is usually made of metal and looks strong and monolithic. According to some users, the auger looks more like an enlarged drilling rig or screw. It rotates around its axis, skillfully grinding the snow and feeding it inside.

Homemade rotary snow blower The good thing is that it can easily cope even with snowdrifts that are frozen or compacted. For ease of use, manufacturers make the surface of the screw serrated.

The electric snow blower is also equipped with a motor and an outlet chute that regulates the distance of snow throw and its direction. Wheels or tracks can be used as a means of transportation.

Also, all snow removal machines can be divided into self-propelled and non-self-propelled models. The movement can be carried out by a motor (you just direct the mechanism) or by a person.

Making a snow blower: getting started

Prepare in advance welding machine, drill and grinder for metal. You will also need sheets roofing iron and steel, pipes of various diameters, angles, bearings and bolts, a separate square and metal clamps, plywood.

  1. Decide in advance what type of snow removal equipment you would like to make: auger or auger-rotary. The second option is somewhat more complicated, but in heavy snowfalls its effectiveness is much higher.
  2. Perhaps the main part of the manufactured mechanism will be the auger. It is a drive shaft to which the “cutting” rings are securely attached. The shaft is made from pipe with a diameter of 3/4 inch. The length is exactly the same as the length of the bucket. Trunnions are welded to each end. In the future, they will allow you to install the shaft in bearings.
  3. If you are planning to build a two-stage snow thrower, a metal plate measuring 12 x 27 cm is attached to the center of the pipe. Its key task is to transport the snow into the chute. Rings 10 mm thick, made of conveyor belt, cling to the sides. You can also cut them from 2mm thick sheet steel.
  4. To make a bucket, it is best to take roofing iron. The bucket will close the auger on three sides at once, and the upper part will move forward a little.
  5. The side parts of the bucket can be made of plywood 10 mm thick. Of course, this is not a DIY snow shovel, but you can be sure that the plywood will hold up. Self-aligning bearings with a built-in shaft and auger are placed on the sides. 2 cm - this is exactly the distance from the edges of the spiral. The main thing is that the auger does not cling to the bucket. Up in mandatory a hole is cut for the outlet chute. To make it, you can use a piece of sewer pipe (diameter 15 cm or more). At the top the pipe bends, given the right direction for snow to fall.
  6. To easily remove and service the engine, take care to build a special frame for installation. Metal corners will come in handy. Weld metal strips to the frame to secure the bucket with auger and motor. Drilled holes will allow you to install the wheels and handle.
  7. Skis and wheels are the next stage of production. To help your snow blower move properly, you can use wheels or skis. The second option is preferable - snow is snow. Skis are made of metal and attached like a sled. The distance from the frame should be minimal. If you decide to install wheels, make sure that they have the maximum level of grip and are resistant even to very severe frosts.
  8. Since you and I make manual snow blowers, they must have their own handles. The snow blower design involves installing handles from half-inch diameter pipes. It is most convenient to secure them with bolts. When moving the snow blower, you should be comfortable and comfortable doing so. A snowplow is not a tractor, and it certainly won’t move on its own.
  9. A few words about the rotor. It doesn't matter whether you make a snow blower from a trimmer or use any other method. But in a two-stage design, an improved rotor can be made instead of a screw. It looks like an axis around which 4 rectangular plates are fastened. It is desirable that they have rims on the edges - this will improve snow collection. Make sure that the diameter of the rotor exactly matches the diameter of the bucket and does not hit it.
  10. A homemade electric snow blower can be equipped with simple electric motor power 1 kW. The main thing is that it is isolated from water and snow - you don’t want to observe a short circuit, right? The same goes for the power cord. There should be no damage to it.
  11. There are two ways to connect the motor to the shaft: a gearbox and a belt feed.

Thus, a typical DIY snow blower is equipped with an electric motor, a separate bucket with an auger, an outlet chute, a frame with special handles and a wire. You can use skis or wheels as a supporting mechanism. As for the screw, it can be manufactured according to various principles. This has already been discussed above.

  1. Choosing a snowblower is one thing, but making one yourself is something completely different. Be sure to use the drawings when planning your work.
  2. Small objects often get caught in the manual auger. A snow blower made by yourself may break down and the engine may jam if special fuses are not installed.
  3. The electric motor has its own cable, but in most cases it is not designed to operate in severe frost. The wire will begin to “freeze” and the installation will work intermittently. We advise you to choose PGVKV wires, as well as SiHF and analogues.
  4. The dimensions of the bucket must be determined in advance. For example, if you plan to clear very narrow paths, working surface It may simply not fit on them.
  5. It is very convenient when a single-stage snow blower has an outlet chute located on the top and side. In this case, the snow travels a much shorter distance. The auger spiral tilts at a slight angle to where the chute is located.

Homemade snow blower made in the garage

We can conclude that making a snow removal machine is, although not an easy task, but quite a doable task.

Manufacturing costs are much lower than if you had to buy such a device in a store. If we talk about cost, then electrical installation It's much cheaper than gasoline. And it weighs several times less. Having weighed all the pros and cons, we can say with confidence that for cleaning small and average area It is convenient and at the same time inexpensive to have your own snow blower.

IN winter period Any owner of a summer house or private house is faced with the need to clear snow from the yard, paths, driveway to the house, as well as the roof. Using special equipment, which many companies produce, this can be done easier and faster. But there is another option: a DIY snowblower. Anyone who is familiar with the operating principle of snow blowers and has certain technical skills can assemble the device themselves.

Snow plows are designed for mechanical removal snow cover in the required area. Their functions include collecting snow mass and throwing it back to the collection point. The engine that powers the car can be electric or gasoline. And the snow removal equipment itself is divided into (with tracked or wheel drive), manually controlled, single-stage and two-stage.

For self-assembly garden equipment you can use a chainsaw engine, an electric motor or, as well as various improvised materials that everyone probably has on the farm. Before you make a snow blower with your own hands, you should familiarize yourself with the types of such equipment and choose an acceptable option for yourself.

Electric snow blowers can clear small areas near the house, for example, a porch or narrow paths. Such a unit is not suitable for clearing large areas of snow cover. In addition, its operation is not effective if there is ice or significant snowdrifts. On the other hand, such equipment is quite compact, easy to operate and convenient to store.

Gasoline-powered self-propelled snowblowers do an excellent job of removing large amounts of snow from large areas. Moving independently, these vehicles have excellent maneuverability and a long ejection range. The equipment is quite large in size, but does not require any physical effort during operation.

Before you make a manual snow blower with your own hands, you need to keep in mind that non-self-propelled models are designed for cleaning small areas of freshly fallen snow up to 25-30 cm thick. They are mainly used for daily cleaning of sidewalks, garden paths and roofs flat shape. Such devices are quite maneuverable, however, when removing a dense layer, it will be difficult to control the equipment, since you will have to push not only the device, but also the thickness of the snow in front of it.

Helpful advice! When assembling a non-self-propelled snow blower for your home with your own hands, you should use the lightest possible parts, since the equipment will work due to human efforts.

How to make a snow blower with your own hands

Making a homemade snow blower for your home with your own hands - a great opportunity do not spend money on purchasing expensive models from leading manufacturers and at the same time avoid labor-intensive clearing of snow from the area with a shovel. In addition, technology self-made will be a source of pride for any owner country house or dachas.

Assembling a homemade snow blower will not be difficult if you have an idea of the operating principle of such equipment and its structure. For clearing snow from paths and yard surfaces own home It will be enough to assemble a screw or rotary model. These are simple machines and anyone can make them. Manufacturing of combined homemade snow blower It’s a little more difficult to do it yourself, but you can do it if you want.

Before you make a snowblower with your own hands, you need to decide on the type of engine. Equipping equipment with an engine internal combustion, it should be noted that this will be a fairly powerful unit that can function on any surface of your site. However, the components and fuel for it are quite expensive. In addition, the disadvantages include the complex technical content of such equipment.

As for a do-it-yourself snowblower with an electric motor, in this case you can use any motor from relatively powerful electrical equipment. A motor from a trimmer or electric saw will do. The advantages of such technology include the availability of electricity, and the disadvantages are the short range of action. To cover the entire area, you will need an extension cord or street wiring with several outlets.

Helpful advice! When assembling an electric snow blower with your own hands, you should take into account that the electric motor requires good waterproofing, because he is afraid of moisture.

On the Internet you can find a large number of videos of homemade snow blowers, watching which will help you visually familiarize yourself with the manufacturing technology of various types of snow blowers.

Making a DIY snow blower from a chainsaw

The main advantages of a homemade chainsaw snow blower are:

  • low cost of components (in addition, you can purchase a used chainsaw at a low price);
  • high performance of the unit;
  • the ability to manufacture basic components from available materials.

The disadvantage is that it is impossible to provide the device with self-propelled movement.

When making your own snow blower from a chainsaw as driving force use its motor. To adapt the engine from such equipment to a snow blower, it is necessary to disconnect it from the frame and slightly modernize it. The power of the motor will affect the main indicators of the snow blower: quality of clearing, ejection range and other parameters.

In addition to the engine, the design of the snow blower includes:

  • auger body (bucket) - you can make it from roofing sheet metal;
  • auger shaft - a pipe with a diameter of 20 mm (¾ inch) is suitable;
  • screw surface of the auger - made of sheet iron, some use a conveyor belt;

  • side parts - for their manufacture use 10 mm plywood or sheet steel;
  • supporting structure (frame) - it is welded from a profile pipe (angle 50 x 50 mm);
  • handle - made of pipe with a diameter of 15 mm (½ inch);
  • shovel for feeding snow into the outlet chute - metal plate 120 x 270 mm.

In your work, you can use the drawings of a snow blower made from a chainsaw with your own hands, posted by users on the Internet.

Forming an auger for a snow blower with your own hands: video of step-by-step production

The main working element of a snow blower is the auger. It consists of cutting rings-blades attached to the drive shaft. A pipe about 80 cm long is used as a shaft. In the center of the pipe you need to cut through hole, into which a shovel will subsequently be inserted to supply snow. When the shaft (pipe) rotates, the blade will throw away the snow.

Before you make an auger for a snow blower with your own hands, you need to develop a diagram or use ready-made drawings according to which the rings will be cut. The auger blades are made of sheet steel. To do this, 4 disks are cut out of metal, cut and pulled out in the shape of a coil. After this, the finished parts of the spiral are welded to the pipe: equally on each side.

Next, having determined the center of the shaft, two blades are welded parallel to each other, which will throw out snow. Metal spacers are welded along the edges of the pipe for fixation. screw design. The spiral blades are attached to the spacers on one side and to the central blades on the other.

Helpful advice! When making an auger for a snowblower from a chainsaw with your own hands, it is very important that the turns of the metal spiral are located at the same distance from the center and towards it. Otherwise, the equipment will vibrate strongly.

When manufacturing the auger body, its length is left equal to length shaft taking into account the length for the drive. Trunnions are welded to the edges of the shaft, with the help of which it is mounted on bearings. They are used in a closed design to avoid the ingress of snow and water. You can get a visual idea of how to make an auger by watching a video of a homemade snow blower: in this case, assembling a snow blower with your own hands will be much easier.

DIY snowplow assembly using a chainsaw

The manufacture of the auger body begins with the sidewalls. To do this, two circles are cut out of metal, the diameter of which exceeds the diameter of the screw assembly by 6-7 cm. A sheet of metal of the appropriate size bent into a semicircle is welded to the sidewalls. In the center of the side parts there are holes into which the screw mechanism is inserted. The bearings are welded to the sidewalls from the outside. In the section of the pipe under the drive, a driven sprocket is fixed by welding (a sprocket, for example, from a motorcycle will do).

Next, proceed to the installation of snow removal. It can be made from a pipe with a diameter of 100 mm and a length of about 1 m. In order to install the pipe, a hole of the appropriate diameter is made in the auger body. It should be located on the back wall of the case. The snow thrower pipe is inserted into this hole, secured with bolts, and a box is installed on top.

The frame for the snow blower is made by welding profile pipes into the frame. Planks for mounting the engine are attached to the transverse corners of the frame. It should be noted that the power unit must move freely along the frame and be able to be locked in the desired position. A handle is welded to the frame with the throttle control of the engine of homemade snow removal equipment connected to it.

Homemade with a longitudinal engine

Depending on the type of terrain, the snow blower frame is equipped with wheels or skids. For smooth areas you can use wheels, for bumpy and uneven surfaces - runners. The base for the runners is made of bars, to which plastic linings are attached for good gliding.

Do-it-yourself snow blower: advantages of an electric model

Electric snow blowers have some advantages over models equipped with internal combustion engines. These include:

  • relatively quiet operation;
  • due to the absence of filters, fuel, and spark plugs in the engine, such units are easy to maintain and maintain;
  • no need to refuel;
  • light weight of the equipment;
  • do not emit smoke during operation;
  • low costs and excellent efficiency.

However, electric snow blowers also have disadvantages, including:

  • low engine power (up to 2 kW);
  • constant monitoring of the condition of the electrical cable for damage;
  • small radius of action (as far as the carrying length allows);
  • the need to apply force to move the device.

Helpful advice! Before making a snow blower with an electric motor, select wires whose insulation will withstand the load and will not crack when exposed to frost.

Assembling an electric snow blower with your own hands

The technology for making electric snow removal equipment with your own hands is in many ways similar to the device gasoline models, however, the driving force of such equipment is an electric motor. It could be simplest engine from a power saw, grinder or other power tool. When assembling it yourself, use the drawings of an electric snow blower as a guide. Videos on the topic will help you avoid mistakes during installation.

The designs of the auger assembly and housing can be assembled, as in the example of a snow blower based on a chainsaw. All that remains is to connect the electric motor. It can be done different methods: via gearbox or belt drive. In the first option, the axis of rotation of the motor is located perpendicular to the pipe (shaft). The auger rotates thanks to a gearbox that connects the shaft and the axis of the electric motor.

The second option assumes that the axis of the engine and the auger shaft are placed parallel and connected by a belt. This scheme allows you to quickly remove and mount the electric motor by adjusting the tension of the belt drive. For work, you can use ready-made drawings that can be adjusted to your dimensions.

When starting self-assembly, you should follow some recommendations:

  • To avoid engine failure as a result of stones and other objects getting into the auger, it is necessary to use safety bushings and bolts. Thanks to this, if the load is exceeded, the bolts will fail, and the engine will not jam;
  • the width of the auger body is selected taking into account the size of the surface requiring cleaning;
  • When installing a single-stage snow blower, the outlet chute should be located on the top and side of the body, which will allow the thrown snow to travel a shorter distance.

DIY snow blower layout from a trimmer

Not all models of electric scythes are suitable for assembling a homemade snow blower from a trimmer. If the trimmer has a curved rod with rotation transmitted by a steel cable, then such a tool is low-power and is not suitable for making a snow blower. One of the requirements is that the trimmer has a straight rod and transmits rotation from the motor to the reel through a gearbox and a rigid shaft. Such devices are more powerful and can be used for snow blowers.

Before you make your own snowblower from a trimmer, you need to check that you have all the necessary tools. You will need a welding machine, grinder, drill. The sequence of work is as follows:

  • the body can be made from small metal barrel, which must be cut approximately 15 cm from the bottom. A hole is made in the center of the bottom of the barrel into which the protruding element of the gearbox will be placed. Holes are drilled along the edges - at a distance coinciding with the fastenings of the shield on the gearbox itself;
  • a hole is made on the side of the barrel square shape 10 x 10 cm in size for throwing away the snow mass;

  • the third part of the open body must be covered with a sheet of tin so that the hole for the snow to come out is strictly in the center;
  • To make a rotor you will need four blades. It is necessary to cut four rectangular plates measuring 25 x 10 cm from sheet metal. These blanks must be cut so that the shape of the blade is obtained. After this, they are welded to the trimmer disk;
  • a snow drain can be made from the remaining parts from a metal barrel. To do this, a rectangular strip of 15 x 30 cm is cut out. This blank must be bent and side parts 10 cm high must be welded to it. Thanks to them, the snow will be directed in a certain direction when thrown;
  • making a spatula. It is made from sheet metal 30 x 40 cm. The edges of the plate are bent so that the sides are about 2 cm high;
  • the snow drain is welded to the body in the place where the ejection hole is located. The blade is fixed from below. The gearbox is secured with bolts. The rotor is installed like a trimmer blade.

A video of a snow blower made from a trimmer with your own hands will help you get acquainted with the assembly process in more detail.

DIY rotary snow blower

The main components of a homemade do-it-yourself rotary snow blower are:

  • internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler;
  • fuel tank;
  • throttle control cable.

To manufacture all elements of the snow blower, you will need a lathe. It is used to adjust all the parts of the mechanism to the required size. If such equipment is not available, the manufacture of a rotor can be ordered in a workshop according to the sketches you have.

Activities for constructing a rotary snow blower can be divided into several stages:

  • assembly of the screw mechanism;
  • rotor manufacturing;
  • housing installation;
  • frame device.

Having made each unit separately, they are assembled into one structure. To ensure that the snow blower has a presentable appearance, it is painted after assembly.

Manufacturing of components for a rotary snow blower

The manufacturing technology of the auger mechanism is similar to the design of an auger for a snow blower made from a chainsaw. A dense (10 mm thick) conveyor belt can be used as screw blades. The dimensions of the screw assembly must correspond to the dimensions in the drawings.

The rotor is made of sheet metal 2.5-3 mm thick. Using a compass, you need to draw a circle of the required diameter on a sheet of paper and cut it out with a grinder. To make the blades, a blank part from an electric motor is taken as a basis. Blades are formed from sheet metal. They are welded at equidistant distances from each other to a steel disk connected to the hub. The number of blades must be at least four.

The frame for the snow blower is assembled by welding sections of metal corner into the frame according to the existing diagram. All components of the frame are attached using bolted connections.

Helpful advice! Rotary snow blowers should use more powerful bearings that can withstand the beating of the rotor mechanism.

When all the components of the snow blower are ready, they begin to assemble them into a single unit. On rotary mechanism install the auger shaft. Then this entire mechanism is fixed to the frame using bolts and a pressure ring. The rotor is attached to the frame using a special bracket. A plastic pipe with a diameter of 100 mm is used as a snow thrower for a homemade rotary snow blower.

Advantages of combined models of snow blowers

Compared to auger units, combined snow removal machines are more efficient in operation, since the load is distributed between both the auger and the rotor. They have sufficient power and can cope with clearing an area of impressive volumes of snow. Among the advantages of homemade rotary snow blowers are:

  • excellent maneuverability and high performance of equipment;
  • depending on the engine used, the snow throw range can reach 12 m;
  • the ability to adjust the width of the snow cover;
  • the light weight of the machine (up to 20 kg) makes it possible to cope with cleaning the area around the house (including for women);

  • the ability to repair a snow blower yourself;
  • low cost of materials for the manufacture of all components of the unit.

Making your own rotary snow blower is quite a complex and painstaking task. If you are not well versed in technology, do not have certain skills or do not have the necessary tools, and finances do not yet allow you to buy a factory model, you can make a snow shovel with your own hands.

Making a snow blower with your own hands: videos about self-assembly

For many it may seem self-assembly snow plows are very challenging task. Justifying the saying “it’s better to see once than to hear a hundred times,” many craftsmen post thematic videos on the Internet. The videos contain the main points of assembling homemade snow blowers, as well as information about the components used to construct them.

On the Internet you can find a huge number of video instructions, which present various options homemade snow removal equipment: based on a chainsaw engine, as well as an electric motor. The stories describe the method of manufacturing a screw mechanism and provide possible materials for their manufacture.

On the Internet you can find many ready-made drawings and assembly diagrams for snow blowers of various models. You can use them to make your own model, and all dimensions in the drawings can be adjusted to apply to an individual snow blower.

Getting acquainted with the video materials will give useful information about how to properly prepare for work and set up a snow blower. The DIY snow blower repair video contains visual information about common faults and breakdowns, how to eliminate them, as well as proper maintenance of the devices.

Having studied in detail the proposed drawings, diagrams, step by step instructions and video materials, everyone can try their hand at making a homemade snow blower. After all, everyone in their garage or workshop has an old lawn mower, chainsaw or other tool that can be used to adapt it to a snowblower. And for those who doubt their capabilities, it is better to purchase a factory model.

With the onset of winter, the demand for snow removal equipment for the home increases significantly. Particularly appreciated are removable devices that can be used in conjunction with mini tractors and walk-behind tractors. Some do-it-yourselfers also put up their devices for mechanized snow removal for sale on various sites, exchanges and message boards. Let's talk about how to make a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

  • study the design and operating principle of known machines for mechanized snow removal;
  • decide on the type of snow removal attachment for the walk-behind tractor, which you can make yourself;
  • find working drawings or develop them yourself;
  • work out the technology and procedure for performing work;
  • purchase or prepare tools for the manufacture of parts and assemblies;
  • collect materials and components for the future snow blower.

Tools for making your own snow removal equipment

Any work can only be done if you have a tool, so it is advisable to have:

  • electric drill - without it it is impossible to make holes of a given diameter in the right places;
  • riveter - will help create strong permanent connections in sheet material;
  • electric welding machine - required for welding the frame, as well as individual units;
  • angle grinder - will be used for cutting steel workpieces, as well as cleaning welded joints;
  • metal scissors;
  • measuring tool - used to mark and control the parameters of parts, as well as the entire snow blower (usually a caliper, tape measure and ruler are sufficient);
  • hand tools for fixing parts and temporary fasteners - will allow you to perform work efficiently and with minimal costs strength;
  • a slipway - even the simplest one, made of wooden blocks, will help simplify the assembly process; the design of the snow blower has a spatial structure that needs to be assembled, fixing individual parts and assemblies in different places.

Types of devices for mechanized snow removal

Mechanical homemade snow blowers are equipped with internal combustion engines. Most often they are mounted (trailer attachments), they are mounted on walk-behind tractors or tractors, including mini tractors. They are distinguished by their low weight and simple design.

Based on their operating principle, snow removal machines are divided into:

  • auger-rotor devices having two types of active bodies: an auger or augers that move the snow to the inlet of the rotor, and the rotor itself, which throws the snow in the desired direction;
  • dump grader or bulldozer type - operate on the principle of mechanical movement of snow mass, more often similar devices used on self-propelled vehicles;
  • blade shovel, used in conjunction with walk-behind tractors to move snow in a confined space;
  • air-fan units - applicable only on freshly fallen snow, they are very small in size and extremely simple device, snow removal occurs due to the created air flow.

The most widespread are auger-rotary snow blowers. They cope well with snow cover of varying sizes. Sometimes problems arise with compacted snow, so expensive units also have an auxiliary shaft with spikes that destroy compacted snow. In some devices, the augers are equipped with additional removable toothed attachments; they cut through a dense mass of snow.

Features of an air rotary snow blower

The simplest snow blower is based on an air-rotor action. This is usually a box that can be moved on small skis across the snow. There is a rotor inside. The drive to the rotor is carried out from an autonomous engine or from the power take-off shaft of a walk-behind tractor.

The receiving part of the box is designed so that when moving forward, snow flows onto the rotor blades. Next, the mass is thrown out by rotating blades through a pipe located above. Its deflector can be directed in any direction. Therefore, the snow is thrown to the left or to the right, where required in a particular case.

The peculiarity of the device is that, in addition to snow, a fairly powerful air flow is formed. Therefore, a snow-air mixture is formed at the exit, which can fly up to 5-6 m. This is often enough to clear the passages.

The disadvantages of air-ventilated snow blowers include a relatively narrow grip, as well as the impossibility of removing snow in the presence of compacted mass. When clearing passages immediately after snow falls, a snow thrower of this type is characterized by fairly high productivity. Do-it-yourselfers quite often take similar design as a basis. The main thing is to create a high rotor speed.

Blade shovel - the simplest snow blower

In some cases, it is not necessary to have a complex unit consisting of a walk-behind tractor and supports on wheels, equipped with a bulldozer shovel. It is enough to have a mechanical assistant - which will move the mass of snow over a short distance.

A special shovel is attached to the walk-behind tractor, and then only due to the traction force created by the walk-behind tractor, the snowball moves to the side. Using reverse gear shifting, the snow blower moves back. Consecutive movements forward and backward clear the area of snow.

When moving forward, the snow shovel goes down; when moving backward, it is raised up. With low snow cover, the efficiency of this working body is quite high.

Snow blower device

A mounted auger snow blower has a metal body with a shaft inside. The shaft has auger blades made of steel sheet complex shape. The shaft is mounted in bearings, which allows it to rotate.

The rotor is visible inside. Above the rotor there is a rotary pipe. It can be turned in any direction. To attach an auger snow blower, there is a hitch, inside of which the power take-off shaft (PTO) of the walk-behind tractor is located.

Torque is transmitted actuators. When the auger shaft rotates and moves forward, snow is captured by the blades and moves from the periphery to its center. The snow mass, moving along the augers, is destroyed, its structure changes, so it will be easy to throw it to the side.

From the auger picking mechanism, snow flows onto the rotor blades. Here it is forward movement is converted into rotational movement. It receives tangential acceleration and is thrown out through the pipe in a given direction: to the right or to the left in the direction of movement of the snow blower. Here the operator directs the deflector so that the removed snow does not interfere with the work.

Making a rotary auger snow blower for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands

To independently manufacture a mounted homemade auger snow blower (auger rotor), you need to think about the placement of the main elements of the equipment, as well as link the dimensions to the existing walk-behind tractor. Therefore, first of all, a layout diagram of the device is created.

It is important to develop a mechanism for transmitting torque from the power take-off shaft to the actuating elements of the snow blower.

Necessary materials

To make an auger-rotary snow blower, you need to purchase:

  • roofing galvanized sheet, it will be used for the manufacture of auger and rotor housings, as well as a snow ejection pipe with a deflector;
  • an equal-field corner of 40 or 50 mm, it will be used to make the frame;
  • a sheet of steel 2 mm thick, from which the auger and rotor blades will be cut;
  • profile pipe will be needed for making brackets;
  • bearing housings and the bearings themselves for installing the shaft;
  • a pipe or circle with an outer diameter of 30 millimeters or more will be used as shafts;
  • pulleys, sprockets and other transmission elements;
  • hardware for creating detachable connections.

Making a homemade auger-rotary snow blower

An approximate procedure for manufacturing a mounted auger rotor for snow removal:

  1. Parts of the auger body are cut from roofing sheet. They are bent according to a suitable cylinder. The frame of the auger body is welded from a rolled angle or profile pipe. The body and frame are connected into a single unit.
  2. Screw parts. To do this, segments are cut out of sheet steel, and then blades are formed from them. The auger shaft needs to be adjusted to accommodate the installation of bearings, so on a lathe the surface is machined to fit the fitting size of the supports, as well as transmission elements. The blades are welded to the shaft, forming an auger converging towards the center.

  1. The bearing housings and the bearings themselves are installed. The auger element of the snow blower is being assembled.
  2. The housing of the snow removal rotor is cut out of roofing sheet metal. Using suitable items, the final shaping of the rotor housing is carried out.
  3. Rotor parts. Rotor blades are cut from sheet steel. The rotor shaft is adjusted to accommodate the installation of bearings and transmission elements. The blades are welded to the rotor shaft.
  4. Balancing must be carried out, since the rotor rotates with quite high frequency rotation.
  5. The frame of the rotor housing is welded from a corner or profile pipe. The bearing housings and the bearings themselves are installed. Assembly: the rotor assembly is assembled.
  6. In production homemade frame, on which the rotor and auger assembly will be placed.
  7. The working part of the machine is being assembled. Transmission elements are installed.
  8. Brackets are adjusted to connect the working tool to the walk-behind tractor.
  9. Bench tests are carried out, based on the results of which defects and shortcomings are determined. After eliminating the shortcomings, they begin testing the auger-rotor type snowblower under operating conditions.

All that remains is to use the manufactured rotary snow blower on the walk-behind tractor for its intended purpose.

Sooner or later, winter comes to every yard, and making allowances for our harsh Russian climate, this often brings with it heavy snowfall.

In this regard, many owners are increasingly thinking about how to make a snow blower themselves, and what is needed for this.

Despite the fact that ready-made models of such units are available for sale, their cost often scares people away, but the problem of clearing snow remains. That is why many will probably be interested in considering the question of what a do-it-yourself snowblower is and what is needed to create it.

Where to begin?

First of all, you should decide which unit the owner needs - one that runs on gasoline or electricity? Here you need to take into account the amount of work being performed, because if we are talking about removing snow cover from walkways and clearing the area to the garage, then it is more rational to do electric model. But if the owner has to clean a large area, then a gasoline unit is best suited.

Having decided on the type of engine, next step The choice of basis for the future snow blower is underway - whether this model will be made from scratch or a walk-behind tractor can be used as a basis.

In the second case, the task is significantly easier, since to transform such a unit into a snow blower, most often it is enough to simply independently design the attached front equipment in the form of a bucket and auger, which will rotate the blades mounted on the rotor and throw the snow to the side. The only thing here is that it will be necessary to transfer the rotational movement of the power take-off shaft to a homemade rotor, but for a competent owner it will not be difficult to perform such a unit.

If you design a snowblower from scratch

It is important to know that any snow blower is always subject to a very high load, and therefore its design should be approached very responsibly. First, you should draw a project on paper or using electronic programs, which will reflect the dimensions of the device, its design, main components and parts, mechanisms and transmission rotational movement, wheelbase, handles and fuel delivery system. Most often, homemade people prefer to make a device that can be moved independently, which makes them much more mobile compared to self-propelled ones.

The main technical catches of the unit include:

  • engine;
  • supporting frame;
  • control handles;
  • snow ejection pipe;
  • fuel tank;
  • snow catching bucket.

A good do-it-yourself snowblower, the drawings of which can be found online in very large quantities, will work well and properly only if done carefully. In addition, all components should be assembled very carefully, for which it is recommended to carefully calculate everything. Fortunately, today you can purchase all the necessary components on the market, after which assembling the unit remains a matter of technology.

Step by step process making a gasoline snow blower with your own hands:

  1. Making the frame. Well suited for these purposes metal corner or profile pipe, which is cut and welded according to technical needs. Here you need to remember to attach steel corners that will serve as a reliable support gasoline engine. Then the control handles are attached, selecting the options that will be most convenient for gripping the snow blower.
  2. Engine. It is best to take it from a simple fuel-powered walk-behind tractor or lawn mower, and then firmly install it on the frame. To facilitate the process, it is better to start the engine manually, since installing a generator and battery significantly increases the weight of the machine.
  3. Design of a rotating auger and intake bucket. It is best to weld the snow intake system from suitable pieces of steel sheet, having previously cut it to the required dimensions in height and length. A conveyor belt works well as a rotating auger, and the easiest way to throw snow at the required distance is to attach steel pipe wide diameter and suitable length. It is recommended to attach a flexible plastic strip to the bottom of the bucket, which will easily slide over the bottom layer of snow cover.

Important points when creating a gasoline-type device

To extend the life of the bucket and auger mechanisms, it is recommended to add safety bolts and bushings to them. It is also very important to protect the engine from snow emissions, stones and dirt, which will avoid the risk of engine jamming and failure. The engine should be mounted in such a way that it can be easily inspected for maintenance. The gas tank should be located on top if possible, and its volume is not recommended to be larger than 2.5 liters. So, taking into account all these useful tips, anyone who can handle plumbing tools well can make a snowblower with their own hands. Before starting work, you should make sure that the person has all necessary tool and materials, so as not to waste time later purchasing missing elements.

Where can I watch a homemade snow blower in action?

Some compatriots still doubt the rationality of purchasing or creating such a device as a snow blower. However, in fact, such a unit can significantly save time and effort for every owner. Snow blower with your own hands, a video about the work of which can the best way ensure the rationality of its creation, allowing you to cope with even the heaviest snow drifts. When creating such homemade unit It is not at all necessary to purchase all the elements, components and mechanisms, since with careful attention many of them can be made from scrap materials.

Summarizing all of the above, we can say with confidence that in fact there is nothing too complicated in the design of a snow blower. The most important thing is to carefully familiarize yourself with its main components, and then competently design everything you need. You should definitely take into account the useful advice and recommendations of those people who have already created for themselves such an indispensable assistant in the winter. So anyone who wants to save time and effort can design and construct a good and reliable snow blower.

Snow blowers produced by well-known companies are not cheap, and not everyone can afford to purchase such equipment. Undoubtedly, a snow blower in Russian climatic conditions is an extremely useful machine, but is it worth shelling out tens of thousands of rubles for a unit that, in any case, will be used occasionally?

The average Russian will most likely prefer to remove snow on his property using a traditional shovel, but people with certain technical skills can make a snow blower with their own hands, especially since this will not cause any particular difficulties for people at least a little familiar with technology, and the only cost is probably the engine.

In the homemade product we are considering, the author purchased a small engine from a walk-behind tractor, a conveyor belt (if it is missing, you can also use a side frame from car tire), a plastic sewer pipe with a diameter of 160 mm and an aerosol can of paint. This is all. All other elements of the machine can be made from available materials.

To make the snow blower, the choice fell on a Honda engine with a power of 6.5 l/s (there is no point in using a weaker one) with an automatic transmission and a gearbox with a gear ratio of 1x2. At medium engine speeds, chain drive gives the auger about 600 rpm.

If you want to install an electric motor with an air cooling system on your snow blower, you should take care to thoroughly protect the air intake from snow.

The optimal working width for a homemade snow blower is 50 cm. This will ensure its maneuverability and allow it to clear narrow areas without much difficulty. garden paths. The total width of the machine will not exceed 65 cm, which will allow it to be stored in a garage or shed.

We will describe in general outline materials necessary for the construction of a homemade snow blower. The author made the auger body from a sheet of roofing iron, the sides from 10 mm thick plywood, the frame from angle steel, and the handles from a half-inch pipe. A pipe with a diameter of ¾ inches can be used as an auger shaft. A through cut is made in the middle of the pipe, into which a steel plate measuring 120x270 mm is inserted and secured, which is designed to throw away snow. When the shaft rotates, the snow mass will be shifted towards the plate by a double-threaded auger made from a conveyor belt. Four rubber seals are attached to special plates.

The plain bearings are placed directly on the pipe. If the pipe is wider than the diameter of the bearing inner ring, it can be ground. In the attached photograph and drawing, special adapters are turned on a lathe for installing bearings.

In the manufacture of the auger, a conveyor belt 1.5 m long and 10 mm thick was used. 4 rings with a diameter of 28 cm are cut out of the tape. The rings are cut out using a jigsaw. If it is not available, the rings can be cut using a board with two screws screwed into it. By rotating the board in the same way as a compass, you can get quite high-quality workpieces.

The rotation of the auger is carried out on closed self-aligning bearings 205. To install the auger, only closed bearings should be used, otherwise, under the influence of snow, the bearing will quickly become unusable.

The auger drive can be chain or belt. A belt drive can be used if the engine has a pulley. Drive parts can be purchased at auto parts stores, but the author recommends a belt drive - when the auger jams, the belt will simply slip.

The size of the grip body should be two to three centimeters larger than the size of the pulley. In this case, the pulley will not touch the housing, and, at the same time, the gap between them will be small.
To prevent the auger from breaking, it would be a good idea to equip it with a safety pin that breaks off when the auger jams.

If you already have a walk-behind tractor on your farm, its engine can be reinstalled on a snow blower in winter. So that reinstalling the motor does not require much time and use special tool, you should install quick-release fasteners on the snow blower.

Among other things, this will make it easier to transport the snow blower, since the engine is the most heavy element structure, and after its dismantling, the snow blower can be moved and serviced without stress.

Under the skis on which the entire structure is attached, you can adapt wooden blocks with plastic pads (do not use aluminum or other metal guides for skis, the snow sticks to them and the snow blower begins to slide poorly. Or, as an option, you can screw strips of plastic).

The rotary chute, designed for discharging removed snow, is made of a plastic sewer pipe with a diameter of 160 mm. A gutter is attached to the pipe, which sets the direction of the snow mass. A pipe of the same size is fixed to the auger body, onto which a rotary chute is placed. It should be taken into account that the diameter of the chute must exceed the width of the auger plate that discharges the snow mass.

For effective snow removal, the hole through which the auger will throw snow must be large enough. Otherwise, the bulk of the snow will be thrown forward and not to the side, thereby reducing the efficiency of the unit to zero.

The snow blower frame is made of steel angles measuring 50x50 mm. Corners measuring 25×25 mm are welded to the transverse corners, on which a platform with power unit. The transverse corners and the handle of the snow blower are secured to the longitudinal corners using M8 bolts.

After carefully adjusting and assembling all the elements of the snow blower, all that remains is to paint it, after which it will become as similar as possible to its expensive branded counterparts.
