If the weather permits, we like to fry with friends outdoors kebabs. However, if the weather doesn’t allow it, we also… fry it. But in any weather, barbecue without a grill is not a serious matter. If you have a private house or cottage, you can make a permanent, solid installation that combines a barbecue grill and a barbecue grill. They are usually made partly from brick or natural stone, partly from metal. If you don’t want to build something serious, you can weld a metal brazier and place it nearby - in the backyard under a canopy, in the garage, in a storage room, etc. If you are a lover of outdoor recreation in any form, you cannot do without a portable barbecue. And one that will be convenient to carry/transport. This is how to make a barbecue out of metal with your own hands and will be discussed further.

We grill kebabs both when the weather permits and when it doesn’t... that’s why we need a grill at any time of the year

Metal grill size

Of all the parameters of metal braziers, only the height of the walls (side) remains more or less constant: it is usually in the range of 13-15 cm. If you make it smaller, closely spaced coals will burn the meat; if you raise it higher, you will need a lot of coals for normal roasting. And we don’t always have the opportunity or desire to wait until a sufficiently large number of them are prepared. So 13-15 cm is the most reasonable choice.

You choose all other sizes of metal barbecues based on your personal preferences or circumstances:

Sometimes they also make a second plate at the bottom with longitudinal holes like grate bars. This is probably necessary so that the metal on the bottom does not burn out, but it is quite possible to do without this detail.

The designs of metal barbecues are not particularly diverse. This is a roasting pan with legs. The dimensions of the roasting pan and the height of the legs are all changes. There are, of course, real works of art, but there are simpler options for going out into nature.

Making stationary models

There are several ways. They are not very different, but still there is a difference.

Method one: with a minimum of welds

It can be used if you have a large enough piece of metal on which the entire “reamer” will fit. In this case, mark out all the dimensions found above and cut out the “extra” corners. Then carefully trim the bend points with a grinder: it will be easier to bend.

We start everything by drawing dimensions on a sheet of metal, then cutting out the extra corners (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

Next, we begin to work with the welding machine. For welding metal, 2-3 mm is best suited. Probably a barbecue - best product for the beginner welder. There is no need to seal the seams here. Holes are even welcome - combustion air will flow through them. Having applied four seams, we get a finished barbecue box.

Bend the workpiece, then weld the seams (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

If the metal used is thin - 1.5-2 mm, the bottom and walls may bend. To prevent this from happening, they can be reinforced with a corner or profile pipe.

The bottom and walls can be strengthened so that they do not bend due to high temperatures

Next, all that remains is to weld the legs. They can be from corners or pipes. The options are different, but both can be used. See the photo for how to weld pipe legs to a metal grill. By the way, you can use the same principle to make legs for a collapsible barbecue - choose the diameters so that they fit tightly. Or weld nuts to the bottom and cut threads on smooth fittings of the appropriate diameter.

Another way to make legs from corners or profile pipes. Here everything is even simpler: weld in the corners.

Method two: a lot of welding

This case is suitable for you if you have metal, but it is available in small pieces. Then you simply cut the necessary blanks and then weld them. In this case, of course, you need better quality: their length is much greater.

The second way to make a metal grill with your own hands is to cut everything necessary details for the box and then weld (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

After the box is assembled, all that remains is to weld the legs. There are no differences here. Several options are described above.

Method three: on a frame made of corners

The sequence of actions differs from the second option. Perhaps it's more The right way: there is a frame that will prevent the metal from bending. In general, such a homemade grill turns out to be more durable. Afterwards the sequence of work is as follows:

  • weld a frame from corners (pictured on the left) or a profile pipe (pictured on the right)
  • You weld the bottom to it, and then the walls.

Well, if you are making a barbecue for yourself, with your own hands, it may make sense to provide a tabletop and/or a frame for laying skewers for comfort, as in the photo below. The top edge of the roasting pan is reinforced with a profile pipe. The reinforcement is welded so that “add-ons” can be inserted. So both the table and the stand for the skewers can be inserted or not as desired.

And for those who like to do everything thoroughly, there is the idea of an iron barbecue under a canopy. Wonderfully done. This metal barbecue with a roof was made by a novice welder with his own hands. He used this project for training: . A very good idea, and the execution is not bad.

If you are interested in barbecues that are quickly made and do not require special skills, pay attention to.

Do-it-yourself collapsible metal grill

For trips to nature, hunting or fishing, a lightweight, portable, collapsible version is more suitable. There are similar products in stores, but they are made of very thin metal and last a long time. That’s why it’s better to make a portable grill yourself.

There are several types:

  • folding;
  • prefabricated

Folding (folding) barbecues in a suitcase and without

Folding barbecues are most often made in the form of a suitcase. Some come with carrying handles. Others require a separate case or some kind of briefcase-suitcase.

A barbecue in a suitcase is a good idea (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

In this version, the owner made a metal grill for an existing suitcase. The parts are attached to metal door hinges. They were welded using manual electric arc welding. This particular model has painfully thin legs, but this is a cost of compactness.

Another option for a portable camp grill. It can also be “packed” into a suitcase, but you can also make a bag out of canvas: cheap and cheerful.

Another barbecue that can be put in a suitcase (to enlarge the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

This version has a bottom with folding legs. The remaining parts are placed inside separately. The sidewalls are fastened together by cuts that go to the middle of the height in different directions.

Another design of a folding barbecue is shown in video format.

Collapsible grills

They differ from the previous ones in that they consist of separate, unfastened parts. They gather on the spot. The assembly methods are different - in some places it’s a few bolts, in others it’s grooves and cuts. During manufacture, welding is not required, but you will need a grinder with diamond blade or saw for metal.

The prefabricated metal grill shown in the photo resembles the children's designer. The idea is interesting, the implementation is excellent. Welding is not needed, but masterful use of an angle grinder is required. If you don’t have a skill of this level, you can finish the most difficult places with a metal saw. If you decide to do something similar with your own hands, first make a layout in cardboard. It is advisable to take it the same thickness as the metal you will use. Assemble the finished layout, adjust it so that everything is perfect. Then you can transfer the patterns to metal.

A metal brazier without welding is made from of stainless steel(to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

The following collapsible grills are made similar to those sold in stores. In them, the legs are made of corners, and cuts in the form of tongues are made in the legs. These tabs are slightly bent. There are holes made in the sidewalls for these protrusions. When assembling, the sides are “fitted” onto the tongues.

A collapsible metal grill - this is easy to make with your own hands (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

The bottom of this model of prefabricated barbecue is not fixed by anything. The lower part of the sidewalls is bent inward by 3-4 mm. After fixing them on the legs around the perimeter, you get a side. The bottom is laid on this side. Having experience in operating this particular model, I can say that the structure turns out to be quite shaky and you need to handle it carefully: once you install it, you won’t move it, otherwise everything may fall apart. But our grill is made of very thin metal, 1 mm. Perhaps if you use a larger thickness, there will be no problem.

Another version of the prefabricated barbecue differs from the previous ones in that its legs are forged. The sidewalls are attached to them using special plates.

Collapsible barbecue on forged legs (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button)

And you will see the simplest of metal barbecues in the photo below. If you have two pieces of angle and a grinder, it can be done in a few minutes. If you can’t bend it, you can drill holes and fasten it with a bolt and nut.

The simplest metal kebab maker. You can do it yourself in a few minutes

Place it over the fireplace, driving the legs into the ground. Not very convenient, but very simple. It will do in case of a fire emergency.

How to paint a metal grill

If you're really bothered by rust on metal, you'll have to clean it off by hand. It is advisable not to use any chemicals, work only with brushes and sandpapers. If desired, it can be painted. But paints must be heat-resistant, or even better, heat-resistant, because only they can withstand the burning temperature of wood. There are several options:

  • heat-resistant paint CERTA (Certa) can withstand up to +900°C, there is another name for the same paint OS-82-03T;
  • heat-resistant enamel Rust-oleum, can be used up to +1093°C, matte, available in white, gray, black;
  • heat-resistant enamel (paint) “KO-8101” can withstand heating up to +650°C, there are twelve basic colors;
  • Heat-resistant enamel KO-8111 Thermal also has anti-corrosion properties and can withstand heating up to +600°C.

If you want it. They create a downright monumental impression. Even the simplest ones. On simple models You can also practice.

Blueprints

And finally, a few drawings. Change the sizes at your discretion, there is no crime in this.

Drawing of a collapsible barbecue

It's hard to find someone who doesn't like meat and vegetables cooked over charcoal. That is why the grill takes leadership position among other attributes necessary for outdoor recreation. Modern devices have varied design: they can be either portable metal or stationary made of brick or metal, with a canopy, cover, etc. It all depends on the desire and imagination of the owner. And you don’t have to buy a brazier at all, because you can make a metal brazier with your own hands.

Advantages of a metal grill

The simplest, but at the same time very practical barbecue model

The pros and cons of metal barbecues vary depending on which models to consider:

  • thin-walled they are mobile, compact and affordable. They are made by stamping parts from the thinnest sheets of metal, which has an advantageous effect on their weight. The most commonly produced are folding versions. However, they are often used not only as a container for coals from a separate fire, but also for ignition and kindling of the latter. Therefore, the service life of such a barbecue can be significantly reduced. The walls quickly burn out, become deformed and become unusable. In addition, they do not retain heat well, which leads to unjustifiably high consumption coals;
  • thick-walled wear-resistant and spacious. Such barbecues can last for years. True, they are not so portable, since they are made of thick sheets of metal, and therefore have quite a lot of weight.

Varieties

Before you start making a barbecue, you need to decide on its type.

Portable (folding/collapsible)

A compact, collapsible grill you can take with you even on a hiking trip.

Portable barbecues are easy to assemble and have a simple and compact design, designed for outdoor picnics. They come in two types: folding and collapsible.

  1. In a portable collapsible barbecue, the elements are connected during the assembly process using bolts, pins and other connecting elements. Such models are mobile and compact, but they have one drawback - poor reliability. Making such a grill with your own hands is quite difficult.
  2. In a portable folding barbecue, the elements are not completely separated, but moved or folded. The main disadvantage is the short service life. IN best case scenario they last for one or two seasons.
  3. Currently, a model such as a disposable grill, which is designed for one use, is very popular. Its undoubted advantage is low price and light weight.

Stationary

A metal grill with a roof allows you to cook in almost any weather

The stationary grill has a large number of manufacturing options. Such models can be with or without a roof. The first ones are self-sufficient. The roof will protect not only the cook, but also the firebox itself from direct sun rays, snow or rain, which will extend its service life. The latter are usually installed where there is already a canopy.

With smokehouse

In such a grill you can not only fry, but also smoke meat or fish

A grill with a smokehouse can be used not only for frying meat or fish, but also for smoking them. To do this, it must be equipped with a dense metal lid, and shelves for installing a grill should be provided on the sides on the inside.

The principle of smoking in such a grill is as follows: thin branches are placed on the bottom fruit trees(apple trees, cherries or plums), and on the installed grill - prepared pieces of meat or fish. Cover the grill with a lid and light a fire under it. The branches inside begin to smolder due to high temperatures, but due to lack of oxygen they do not ignite. Thus, meat or fish is simultaneously baked at high temperatures and smoked in the smoke from smoldering fruit branches.

Unlike the rectangular barbecues we are used to, American barbecues are often round

The main difference between a barbecue and a grill is that the meat is fried not on skewers, but on a grill. In this case, not only coals can be used, but also open fire. Thus, the sides must be higher than those of the barbecue, and they require fastenings for the grill.

Table: Pros and cons of different types of barbecues

TYPE ADVANTAGES FLAWS
Portable (thin-walled)Compactness, ease of assembly, light weight, low price, mobility.Short service life, possible deformation and burning of the main container, poor heat retention.
Portable/mobile (thick-walled)It retains the temperature better, compared to a stationary one, it is light in weight, long term operation, resistant to corrosion.High price.
DisposableMobility, light weight, low price.Cannot be reused.
StationaryLarge fryer sizes, low heat transfer, longest service life.There is no possibility to move.
Allows you not only to fry, but also to smoke meat and fish.Quite difficult to find on sale. Can only be made to order or independently.
Cooking not only over coals, but also over an open fire.Quite an expensive device.

Selecting a location

When choosing a location, you need to consider some important points:

  • The grill should not be placed under trees or near bushes, as heat may scorch branches;
  • Do not place the device under film or fabric canopies, which may catch fire due to heat;
  • it is advisable to take into account the wind rose so that smoke does not get into the windows of your house or neighbors;
  • the best option would be one equipped with a barbecue separate plot, located near the main recreation area.

If the barbecue is on the ground, it is advisable to pave the area under it with fire-resistant material (stones or paving slabs). During the rainy season, this will allow you to approach the barbecue without interference, and the structure itself will not sink into the ground over time.

So, we smoothly approached the main issue of our conversation. How to make a grill with your own hands?

Tools and materials

To make a metal barbecue with your own hands, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • sheet metal(iron or steel);
  • bolts and other fastening materials;
  • welding machine;

When making a metal barbecue, you can’t do without a welding machine.

  • hand drill or electric drill;
  • grinder with cutting discs for metal;
  • angle grinder;
  • pipe or corner (for legs);
  • tape measure and square for marking;

For the 'pattern' metal parts barbecue you will need a grinder

  • angle grinder;
  • hammer or small sledgehammer;
  • pipe or corner (for legs);
  • tape measure and square for marking.

DIY manufacturing technology

The grill, which we will make ourselves from metal, will be as simple as possible. For small company 8-10 skewers with meat are enough, and if the need arises, you can prepare another portion.

Skewers should not interfere with each other, but large gaps between them should be avoided so as not to waste heat.

Following these arguments, we calculate the length of the structure. A classic skewer holds 5-7 pieces of meat. The depth of the grill is determined by practical methods. The meat should not be far from the coals, but you should not place it too close, otherwise it will burn. The distance from the top edge of the structure to the ground depends on the height of the cook. Most often it is 75–125 cm.

Drawing

Let's make a drawing of our barbecue. The diagram may look something like the following figure.

Brazier is not space rocket, so the drawing may be the most primitive

We will use sheet metal 2–3 mm thick as the material.

So, we mark the sheet using a square to avoid distortions:

  • 70x20 cm – 2 pcs. (back and front walls);
  • 70x28 cm – 1 pc. (bottom);
  • 28x20 cm - 2 pcs. (side walls).

We cut the elements with a grinder.

Small slits will help fix the skewer in the desired position

You can make small cuts along the upper long side of the sides to more securely fix the skewer in the chosen position.

To ensure the flow of oxygen, a number of holes are made along the sides of the grill

To ensure air flow inside the base of the drawer, several holes with a diameter of 10 mm should be drilled on the front and back panels in increments of 10–15 cm from each other. Measure 2 cm from the bottom edge of the structure and draw a straight line, marking the places for cutting.

Welding work

For the legs you can use a corner 20x20 cm or metal pipes with a diameter of at least 20 mm, a length of 60–100 cm (depending on the height of the cook).

If you use tubes, you can make the structure collapsible. To do this, you will additionally need 4 bolts with nuts. Bolts are welded to each tube. In all four corners The bottom of the box needs to be drilled through a hole with a diameter slightly larger than that of the bolts welded to the support legs. If corners are used, they can simply be welded to the base.

If you want to add a smoking function to your barbecue, then it will be enough to weld two corners to the inside of its long sides at a height of approximately 7-10 centimeters from the bottom. You should also make a metal lid by welding small sides to a metal base slightly larger than the size of the grill. For convenience, it is recommended to weld a bracket on top of the lid, which will be used as a handle.

If desired, you can make a canopy or shelf for firewood or coals, weld handles to the side walls, add a hook for a spatula or poker.

The grill may not be just ‘ iron box’, but a real multifunctional kitchen

How to care for your grill

Yes, the barbecue needs care. Which one?

  1. You can’t fill a hot barbecue with water yet (temperature changes can cause the metal to become deformed).
  2. Trapped grease, soot or soot can be easily removed with a rag and sand.
  3. Grease the grill from time to time vegetable oil, applied to a clean rag - this will add shine and at the same time protect the structure from adverse weather conditions.

Unusual grill design (video)

In conclusion, we bring to your attention a short video that shows how to make a metal grill using the base from an old sewing machine"Singer" (Singer).

Born in 1977 in Donetsk, Ukraine. Graduated from the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute (now Donetsk State Technical University) with a degree in Automated systems management. Worked at the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant. In 1997 he moved to Moscow, where for 8 years he worked in several construction teams.

Summer is coming, which means it's time to get ready for outdoor recreation. To ensure that your vacation is always comfortable, we recommend making a barbecue with your own hands from metal, because it is difficult to imagine such a vacation without a well-fried kebab. This device can be purchased at almost any hardware store, but if the cost/quality of factory-made products is not suitable, then you can makeDIY metal grill.

Advantages of iron barbecues

This kind of barbecue is very popular, and the reason lies in their undeniable advantages, such as:

  • low cost;
  • easy cleaning, transportation, assembly/disassembly;
  • uniform roasting of meat (iron retains heat well);
  • safety;
  • ease of use;
  • possibility of making it yourself.

Usually homemade barbecues welded, but in the absence of welding equipment, you can resort to bolting.

Making a barbecue

The work will require the following tools:

  • Sheet steel;
  • grinder, wheels for it;
  • electric drill;
  • roulette;
  • (or tie bolts).

Let's look at the process of creating a traditional metal barbecue.

Stage 1. Plan

First, a plan is drawn up - a small diagram of the future product. In the diagram you need to describe the kebab maker in as much detail as possible and indicate the dimensions of each part. The most convenient is a grill with a height of 85 cm and a roasting pan size of 40x80 cm.

In addition to drawing up a diagram, you should take care of consumables.

Note! It is undesirable to use too thick sheets of steel, otherwise the structure will be difficult to lift. The steel should be between 0.4 cm and 1 cm thick.

Stage 2: Consumables

Below are the components for making a kebab bar with a height of 85 cm.

Supports:

  • 4 iron legs 65 cm long from a corner or pipe ø2.5 cm;
  • a pair of angles or pipes ø2 cm for horizontal connection of the legs (each such connection will be 76.5 cm in length).

Dutch oven:

  • two walls measuring 77x20 cm, made of sheet steel;
  • a pair of cross walls 39x20 cm;
  • metal mesh 39x77 cm;
  • a pair of transverse pipes for the bottom of the structure, 39 cm long;
  • two iron handles for easy transportation;
  • several fireclay bricks.

Note! Instead of a mesh with crossbars, you can use one solid sheet of 39x77 cm.

You will also need a lid of the appropriate size with longitudinal edges curved inward.

Stage 3. Welding work

Step 1. First, the body is welded from the walls and bottom (the use of bolts will be discussed below).

Step 2. The legs are welded to the body.

Step 3. The legs are strengthened with a longitudinal connection, preferably at a height of 15 cm - this way there will be a reserve between them for storing firewood.

Step 4. If a metal mesh was used for the bottom of the brazier, then fireclay bricks are laid. Small holes are made in the longitudinal walls (5 pieces on each side, step 10 cm) to supply oxygen (so the wood will ignite faster).

Step 5. Handles made of steel wire ø1 cm are fixed on the transverse walls.

Prices for popular models of welding machines

Welders

Stage 4. Painting the grill

First, let's figure out whether it is necessary to paint the kebab grill at all. On the one hand, paint, as well as others chemicals, it is not advisable to apply it to the grill, since the cooked meat will absorb harmful substances. On the other hand, the current products used to paint barbecue grills are absolutely safe.

Note! The only problem can be the high combustion temperature, which can lead to delamination or even burning of the paint layer.

Among all the fireproof coatings for barbecues, it is recommended to choose the following:

  • silicone enamel, which can withstand temperatures up to 600ᵒC;
  • powdered paints are effective, but difficult to apply (need high-temperature firing);
  • oxidation technology.

The last option is most suitable. First, the body is treated with 5% sulfuric acid, then boiled in a solution of laundry soap and boiled in the infusion for 1.5 hours sodium hydroxide. As a result, a black non-stick layer is formed on the structure, protecting it from rust.

Stationary grill with canopy

Stationary grill with canopy, drawings 1-Firebox. 2-Table. 3-Stand. 4-Canopy. 7-Skewer

After making a stationary barbecue, it is advisable to build a canopy for it. There are a lot of materials that can be used for this when minimum costs time and money. Unless it is impossible to make an iron structure without welding (if desired, it can be replaced with a tie bolt).

The supports of the canopies are usually welded to the legs of the barbecue, but sometimes there are very large structures (4x4 m), for which four metal pillars are concreted.

Corners of 5x5 cm are laid on top of the posts along the perimeter of the canopy, and on top of them - a metal profile or any other roofing material. If desired, the canopy is decorated with forging.

A wooden canopy is easier to make, but the surface should also be treated with a fire retardant.

Making a barbecue from an iron barrel

If desired, you can design a larger version - for example, a stationary structure made from a barrel. The barrel itself can be anything, the main thing is that its size is sufficient for cooking barbecue.

Note! Picking up a barrel Special attention it is worth devoting it to the “past”. If chemicals or fuels and lubricants were previously stored in it, then it is prohibited to use it to create a barbecue.

In addition to the barrel itself, you should prepare:

  • steel corner with a shelf at least 4.5 cm high;
  • four rubber wheels (preferably with a metal base);
  • two sets of door hinges;
  • door handle (iron);
  • metal mesh;
  • grinder, wheels for it;
  • welding;
  • jigsaw

Manufacturing instructions

Step 1. Angle sections of the required length are cut. The height of the structure should be approximately 1 m, and the width should correspond to the length of the barrel.

Step 2. Side elements will consist of two horizontal and two vertical racks every. The first ones will be installed from below, approximately 25 cm from the bottom edge of the vertical posts, and from above, at the level of the barrel radius. The racks are laid out on a flat surface and welded as shown in the image - at an angle of 90ᵒ.

Step 3. The second side part of the structure is welded in a similar way, after which both elements are connected using two corners installed at the level of the lower horizontal posts.

Note! Connections must be done with extreme caution to avoid distortions.

Step 4. The wheels are attached to the sidewall.

Step 5. Next, the barrel is installed on the finished support. This must be done in such a way that the drain hole is located at the back and top at an angle of 30ᵒ, on the right side (in relation to the front part). Such a hole will serve as a hood during operation.

Step 6. Using chalk, mark ¼ of the barrel - the lid of the kebab pot. The marked part is cut out with a jigsaw, the edges are carefully cleaned with a grinder and a grinding disc.

Step 7. The barrels are attached to the quarter door hinges, after which they are connected to the base - the lid is ready. For ease of use, a door handle is attached to the lid.

Step 8. A pipe of the appropriate diameter is inserted into the hood.

Step 9. All that remains is to take care of interior design. Special holders are welded on the inner surface of the body (iron plates measuring 3x6 cm, although thin corners can also be taken). These holders are installed in the middle of each side, two pieces each.

Note! For convenient transportation, a handle can be attached to the barbecue frame. After this, the structure is painted in the same way as described in the previous paragraph of the article.

Video - Barbecue from a barrel

Find out how to make, and also consider collapsible and stationary structures, from our new article.

If the goal is to create a kebab maker that is not only functional, but also attractive from a design point of view, then we advise you to pay attention to artistic forging. Of course, it is impossible to do this yourself without special equipment and appropriate skills.

Or another option: if it is possible to get the front part of an old car, then it can also be used to make a barbecue. The roaster in this design is placed in the hood. Moreover, the grill already has wheels, so you can take it with you outdoors (as a trailer, of course).

It is unlikely that in a city apartment there will be room for a full-fledged barbecue, but this does not mean that you should deny yourself a good picnic. For such cases, there is a miniature balcony grill, mounted on the railing like flower pots. The length of such structures is just over half a meter, so they are suitable for even the smallest terraces and balconies.

If desired, the balcony grill can be screwed to the wall or installed in any other convenient location. In short, now you can enjoy a bite of real shish kebab without even leaving your apartment.

In order for the kebab maker to last as long as possible, you must follow all the rules fire safety. Distance from fire to wooden elements the structure (if any - for example, the attachment to the transport handle) must be at least 20 cm. Moreover, all these elements must be treated with an antiseptic and fire retardant.

Previously, when the range of spices was very scarce, burning wood was used to add flavor to dishes. Below are the types of trees and the meats they are best used for:

  • oak – seafood, poultry;
  • apple tree – lamb, beef, pork;
  • grape vine – snails, seafood;
  • alder – salmon, turkey;
  • maple – seafood, poultry, pork;
  • birch – beef, chicken;
  • cherry – poultry, lamb.

There is another option - to purchase ready-made coal briquettes in the shop. Briquettes provide permanent heat, but at the same time there is no aroma. There is also loose coal, but it burns unevenly due to the different sizes of the pieces.

Before frying, the grate should be greased to prevent food from sticking to it. And lastly: the place to install the barbecue should be cleared of dry grass, branches, debris in advance, and it is also advisable to always have a bucket of sand nearby.

    Owners of country houses often spend time on fresh air, especially in the warm season. Therefore, you can’t do without a barbecue. If you don’t have such a design yet, you can make it yourself from metal. First you need to decide on the type of structure:

    • Stationary. This grill is installed on solid foundation. The service life can reach several decades.
    • Portable. This structure can be disassembled at any time and transported to another location. However, the service life of such a structure is short.
    • Mobile. The grill is equipped with small wheels, thanks to which it can be moved around your plot of land.

    After this, you need to develop a drawing and diagram to facilitate the work at all stages.

    In this article we will look at the main nuances self-made such a design.

    Optimal dimensions of the barbecue

    The dimensions of the barbecue structure should ensure comfortable cooking. Since the skewers need to be constantly turned over, you need to decide on optimal height. To do this, you need to measure the distance from the palm at bent arm at the elbow to the surface of the ground. Standard size is considered 1 m, but the height of portable options often does not exceed 70 cm.

    In order for the meat to be thoroughly fried, a distance of up to 10 cm must be placed between the skewers. Therefore, the length of the structure depends on the number of guests. The shish kebab should be prepared in no more than 3 servings. Otherwise, you can spend half a day at the grill. On average, the length of the structure is 1 m. If it is longer, you will have to constantly run around the structure, as well as ensure a sufficient amount of coals, as well as maintain optimal heat.

    The standard length of skewers is 40 cm, on which you can put up to 8 pieces. Therefore, the width of the grill should be 40 cm.

    The depth of the barbecue should be no more than 20 cm. At the same time, there should be about 10 cm from the meat to the coals. Otherwise, the meat will be raw if the height is greater, or burnt if it is small.

    How to make a metal grill with a canopy (with a roof)

    To protect the barbecue structure from natural precipitation, it is recommended to make a canopy. Before this, it is necessary to develop a drawing indicating the main parameters and parts.

    The roof can be made of slate, polycarbonate or metal tiles. It is better to assemble the sidewalls from a profile pipe with a section of 40X40. To improve appearance frames, decorative elements are attached to it.

    A compact structure with a canopy looks like this:

    Side posts made of profile pipe can be made straight, but bent metal can give a unique appearance. It is almost impossible to do this with your own hands, so you need to prepare a pipe up to 2.5 m long and take it to specialists, and also show the diagram.

    When the profile is ready, you will need to weld the frame. On next stage The brazier holder is made, as well as the firewood grates.

    To avoid distortions in the structure, you need to have experience in welding; this will allow you to achieve a unified construction of the gratings and frame. Therefore, the side racks must be installed on a flat surface and parallel to each other. Therefore, it is recommended to get the help of another person.

    Before welding elements, they must be checked with a building level. After this, the transverse pipes are attached to the roof. Roofing material fixed with self-tapping screws.

    On last stage a brazier is made. To do this, you need to prepare metal with a thickness of 3 mm. When developing the drawing, the brazier should be 3 mm smaller than the holder grid, since the metal will expand during heating.

    If you need to make a roof for a large barbecue, then you need to purchase more profile pipes. Making such a canopy is no more difficult than the previous one, you just need to prepare a sketch.

    Stages of work:

    • Cut the profile to the required length.
    • Secure the side frames using a welding machine.
    • Using transverse pipes, connect the sidewalls from below and above.
    • Make a grate for the fire box holder and install it on the structure.
    • Fixed on top of the side posts bent profile, for fastening the roof, which is fastened with self-tapping screws.
    • If necessary, the frame can be decorated with decorated elements.

    We make a metal grill with a chimney and a cauldron with our own hands under the gazebo

    If it is assumed that the structure will be located in a gazebo, then you need to make a chimney. To do this, you need to know some features of self-production.

    To determine the height of the chimney and its cross-section, you can use the formula, but it is so complex that it is rarely used. It is easier to divide the channel area by the furnace area.

    The graph shows pipes with different cross-sections.

    Since a small number of parameters are taken into account, there may be small errors.

    Most often, a special smoke collector with a chimney is installed above a metal structure for preparing barbecue. Sizes are calculated individually. You need to understand that at a height of about 5 cm above the kebab, smoke should accumulate, which, under the influence of draft, will go into the chimney pipe.

    You can attach the smoke hood to the roof of the gazebo yourself. The grill with the cauldron will act as a separate structure that can be moved if necessary.

    There are many mounting options that differ in the mechanism for changing position. Let's look at one example with a long bolt. Thanks to this method, the cap can be lowered or raised if necessary.

    First you need to make a base on the roof and secure the nut using a welding machine. And the cap itself needs to be welded to a ring, the diameter of which is slightly smaller than the head of the long bolt.

    A chimney must be connected to the cap, the height of which above the roof level must be at least 50 cm.

    Under such a smoke collector you can install a barbecue, with the possibility of using a cauldron. If you have experience in welding, then good option is such a model.

    If this is not possible, then you can make a simple grill from car rims. I described this manufacturing option in one of the previous articles.

    To summarize, we can say that to make a metal barbecue you need certain skills in working with a welding machine. Otherwise, it is recommended to make the structure from other materials.

    Many people cannot imagine a full-fledged outdoor recreation without aromatic barbecue. Craftsmen can make a brick grill with their own hands. This is simply necessary for an on-site session.

    When going into nature, you can build a compact structure from scrap materials. And for a dacha, a gazebo equipped with a barbecue is more suitable.

    Where to start construction?

    Think about where you want to build a barbecue. It is better to choose a recreation area for this.

    Care must be taken to provide protection from the elements. A homemade hearth can be installed in summerhouse, under a canopy or in a partially open veranda.

    Masters often take on the solution difficult task how to make a grill in the form of a multifunctional oven.

    Average size indicators: width – 1.6 m; height – 1.6 m; depth - 0.8 m. For a multifunctional oven, it is necessary to make a foundation, an example of which is a strip foundation.

    The master usually supplements a complex design with various functional add-ons:

    • Niches. They are convenient to use to store skewers and other utensils.
    • Notches. Firewood is stored in them to dry near the fireplace.
    • Sink. It is installed when there is a real opportunity to fail communications. It is convenient to wash your hands or dishes.

    A table with benches is placed not far from the fireplace. The owner is free to choose furniture from budget or expensive options depending on his financial capabilities and taste preferences.

    The barbecue drawings will help you create a project correctly. After all, it is necessary to take into account not only the technical side of the issue, but also the aesthetic component.

    If you look at the photo of the grill, it should be the central element of the composition. It is important that all surrounding objects are combined.

    Construction of a brick grill

    The design involves the construction of a solid foundation. It is made from sand, gravel, cement and fire bricks. Except construction tools The master will need a drill with a special attachment or a concrete mixer to prepare the solution.

    It is necessary to prepare reinforcing bars with reinforcing mesh, as well as metal corners with hardware. The master prepares the material in advance to create the sheathing.

    Phased construction

    They mark the construction site and carry out markings. After this, a pit is created with a width of 0.6 m and a length of 1.6 m.

    Remove to a depth of 0.6 m upper layer soil.

    Make a pillow out of sand. Its thickness should not be less than 10 cm. The pillow must be thoroughly compacted. Formwork is placed around the perimeter of the pit.

    The next stage is knitting the reinforcement. Metal rods are connected to each other in the form of a lattice and lowered to the bottom of the pit.

    Note!

    Do cement mortar and pour it into the formwork. It must be pierced with a metal rod so that no air remains inside.

    For cooking cement mixture grades 150 and 200 are suitable. Crushed stone and sand are also added to the solution. The proportional ratio of cement, sand and crushed stone is 1:3:5. The solution will also need water - 1 or 2 buckets, depending on how wet the sand is.

    The compacted solution is smoothed and leveled. You need to make a level base for the bricks.

    For waterproofing, roofing felt and special mastics are used.

    As soon as the foundation has hardened, you can begin laying.

    Nuances that the master should know about

    Kiln brick has excellent fire resistance, but in the cold it can become brittle. Therefore, a gazebo with a brick grill is the best option.

    Note!

    Before the beginning construction work the material is soaked in water. Bricks are capable of absorbing liquid, which can negatively affect the performance characteristics of the solution.

    The mixture itself is prepared from other components and differs in consistency. It is made from cement, sand and slaked lime in a ratio of 1:3:1.

    Laying begins from the corners. The length of the back wall is 3 bricks, and the sides are 2.5 bricks. The width must be at least 1.5 bricks. During the laying process, the craftsman gently taps the surface of the brick with a mallet to fit it closely to the adjacent one.

    Metal structure

    A metal brazier can be made by a craftsman who knows how to use a welding machine. The craftsman will need sheet iron, metal corners or pieces of reinforcement, a tray with a grid of the same dimensions, and a marker with a tape measure.

    The design is a deep roasting pan on support legs. If desired, the owner can equip the barbecue with a smokehouse, then the household will always have the opportunity to enjoy naturally smoked delicacies.

    Note!

    Experienced craftsmen can try their hand at making a homemade barbecue. From two connected cylinders they create a grill-smokehouse. The master will need the ability to work with a grinder and a drill.

    The chimney is made of pipe, and the stands, handles and legs are made of metal. You need to prepare hinges, nuts and bolts, special enamel and a wick. The barbecue from the cylinder can be decorated at your discretion.

    The main thing in this matter is a creative approach.
