Then, pressing the tool tightly against the unglued edge of the facade for 1-2 seconds, perform a movement as if pulling and wrapping the film onto the inside of the facade. In this case, the glue at the clamping point should warm up, and the film itself should stretch slightly and protrude above the plane of the back side of the part. After all sections of the facade have been glued in this way, the protruding excess film can be cut off with a stationery knife.

Unstretched internal corners of frame facades can be glued in the same way using a heated metal rod commensurate with the radius of the cutter used when cutting out the frame opening.

Attention! You should not heat the film directly with a hairdryer, as it will begin to shrink and curl. This will only make the situation worse.

Bonding the film by friction

The method is interesting because it does not require any devices or equipment. Using a piece of rag, use your thumb to rub an area of ​​unadhered PVC film. In this case, friction creates pressure and temperature sufficient to activate the glue. The disadvantages of this technique include the high probability of exposing the edge of the edge of the MDF facade and damage by friction to the decorative layer of the PVC film itself.

Gluing the film using second glue

When using MDF film facades, the film often peels off near heating devices or sources of hot steam. In such cases, you should not delay eliminating the defect, since over time the film can become so deformed that it will no longer be possible to restore the façade. To glue the PVC film you will need a quick-drying second glue, such as “SuperMoment” or similar. In this case, the gluing area should be coated so that the glue gets not only inside, but also partially on the film itself and on the exposed areas of the MDF, thus ensuring the strength and protection of the facade from the influence of external factors during further operation.

An extreme case is when the PVC film peels off over the entire surface of the MDF facade. I won’t talk too much about whether painted or filmed MDF is better, but I’ll say right away that the future lies with facades covered with film. The fact is that such components are much more accurate, durable and, importantly, cheaper to produce than painted MDF or MDF enamel covered.

Self-adhesive for furniture: what to buy

It is important to understand that not every film can be glued to slab materials. If a randomly selected self-adhesive from the market sticks to the furniture, then the surface will most likely not be perfectly smooth, and the coating will bulge in the corners and will come off after a while.

There are two solutions to the problem, namely, buy an industrially manufactured facade that will not peel off and will look great. The second option is to buy a good film that has high adhesion to various surfaces, including wood.

Industrial MDF production facades and their subsequent decoration with film is carried out as follows:

  • In accordance with the product specifications, slabs with a thickness of 6 to 32 mm are cut into individual parts;

  • The cut blanks are sent to the milling shop, where the blanks are given the required configuration using special equipment;
  • The end of the workpiece is processed manual router, after which the manufacture of the facade can be considered complete;

  • On next stage the part goes to the glue shop, where a special hot-melt adhesive is applied to the surface, which is activated at elevated temperatures;

  • The part prepared in this way goes to the membrane-vacuum pressing workshop, where, using special equipment, it is covered with a hot film that comes into contact with hot-melt adhesive;

  • After the film has cooled, its excess is cut off and the product is ready for packaging.

Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, all stages of the production process cannot be done with your own hands at home. However, there is a way to restore or update furniture with using PVC films.

Pasting furniture facades at home

Now I’ll tell you how to glue MDF film façade on a flat surface.

To carry out the planned work you will need following materials and tools:

  • PVC film;
  • White Spirit;
  • Soft, lint-free cloth;
  • New wide plaster spatula;
  • Sharp utility knife;
  • Sharp scissors;
  • Household hair dryer.

Important!
The spatula must be truly new, since a used tool may have subtle irregularities that will scratch the film when smoothing.

The work ahead consists of the following stages.

Despite the fact that the instructions for gluing film on MDF are simple, the quality of the finished result will depend on how accurately you follow it.

  • On initial stage carefully wipe the surface to be decorated with a rag soaked in white spirit;

  • We measure the perimeter of the surface to be pasted and using these measurements we cut out the self-adhesive with a margin of 1-2 cm on each side;

  • Roll the self-adhesive into a roll with the wrong side facing up;
  • We apply the edge of the self-adhesive to the edge of the facade and separate the edge of the backing;

  • Next, we gradually unroll the roll, separating the backing;

  • Using a spatula wrapped in fabric, smooth out the self-adhesive so that no bubbles appear on it;

  • After the film is evenly glued over the entire surface, excess self-adhesive is trimmed around the entire perimeter;

  • The perimeter of the facade is heated with a household hairdryer and additionally smoothed with a spatula wrapped in fabric;
  • We use a similar method if there are bubbles on the surface of the product.

If all instructions are followed correctly, the result will be practically indistinguishable from factory-made furniture facades.

Important!
A special feature of adhesive-based PVC films is their small thickness.
As a result, every speck of dust or unevenness on the surface being pasted will be visible to the naked eye.
Therefore, we carefully wipe the facade with a damp cloth and check for dust under a lamp or bright lantern.

Covering the tabletop with wood-effect film

You have already become familiar with the pasting of furniture facades, now I’ll tell you how I finished it myself. kitchen countertop. The main stages of the work done are not much different from the previous method, so I’ll just post my photos with explanations.

First, I sanded the tabletop, changing the grit sandpaper in a sander from medium to fine. The need for grinding was caused by the presence of scratches and chips on both the front surface and the ends.

I treated the depressions and large scratches with putty, after which I finally sanded the workpiece and wiped it with a cloth soaked in white spirit.

I applied self-adhesive, gradually removing the backing and spreading out the unevenness on the sides. When the main surface was pasted over, I folded the self-adhesive along the ends.

I made cuts in the corners with a sharp utility knife and folded the bottom piece of film under the top one. I smoothed the end of the film with a rag.

He heated the remaining folds with a hairdryer and, already heated, smoothed them out with a rag. After complete cooling, the film is stretched and the ends look perfectly even.
