Do Garage Doors DIY sectionals are best, since you should never forget about the proverb as old as time: if necessary quality work, you have to do it yourself. At the moment, many country developers prefer to carry out all work related to own home, personally.

Often suburban area includes not only a house, but also utility rooms, for example, a garage along with a bathhouse, storage room or other buildings of a purely service nature. If we talk about the garage as building structure, then it is worth paying attention to what last years the principle of its construction has changed greatly. In the past, we could have been talking about a simple box, the main purpose of which was to protect vehicles from the weather and thefts. Now we are often talking about a small house, provided with all the comfort requirements for a car owner.

The process of development of garage doors also played a significant role, since now a lot of them are being produced to replace bulky options. alternative options, among which we can note:

  • retractable view,
  • sectional,
  • roller shutter,
  • lift-and-swivel,
  • other rare species.

Each of these options has sufficient indicators of reliability, aesthetics and efficiency, and in addition, they are quite simple, which allows you to create homemade gate, and do not require much space.

If you look at the gate as separate species goods, then the most popular can be called sectional doors for the garage, because to this day they occupy a leading position in sales.

Sandwich panel construction

Creating sectional doors with your own hands is not such a difficult task, since the element itself has a very simple design. It consists of sandwich panels that are connected using hinges and moved using a cable, roller and drum. Such a system can move the structure to the ceiling and down, being mounted on guides.

The production of sandwich panels is carried out in a factory, and they include sheets of galvanized iron, inner space which are filled with sealant. We can talk about polyester or polyurethane. When the gate is closed, the panels themselves also have no contact points, since the gaps are completely covered with cork sheets.

How to make a gate yourself?

To make a garage door you will need: a screwdriver, a tape measure, drills, a hammer drill, a level.

The market value of sectional doors is very high, so quite often craftsmen try to create homemade options, in a personal workshop.

Of course, in practice it turns out that manufacturing parts along with assemblies for gates of this type is a complex and expensive task, but if you use ready-made ones, the craftsman will have to spend much less time.

In this case Special attention it is worth paying attention to the importance of technology, since most often homemade gates turn out to be of poor quality, and if the master manages to make such a product work, there will always be a danger that they will fall. In this case, you can damage the car or get hurt yourself.

Tools required for the work:

  • screwdriver;
  • yardstick;
  • drills with pobeditovy nozzle;
  • perforator;
  • installation tool;
  • level.

Most simple option is the purchase of ready-made gates.

There is also a slightly more logical option - this is the purchase of a ready-made disassembled product and self-installation sectional doors. There are no particular difficulties in this task, since in in this case the buyer receives an enlarged designer. Of course, the number of parts here will be quite considerable, so it will take a lot of time to assemble the structure.

In this case, first, vertical and horizontal guides are installed, which are responsible for the movement of the sections. After this, each section is fastened together using hinges. The top panel is laid out in last resort. It should ensure a secure fit to the strip. After this, control mechanisms and all necessary accessories are installed: locks, handles and others.

At the same time, labor costs will be considerable, since accuracy and correctness of assembly are the key for long years reliable service. True, in almost every product, manufacturers take care to provide accurate diagrams, thanks to which the installation of sectional doors turns into an easy task.

Installation and assembly of finished gates

So, as already mentioned, homemade gates are not always the best option, since they involve high labor costs and low quality. But if it is possible to buy a disassembled product, you will still be able to work on it yourself.

First of all, the technician needs to clean the opening in which the installation is planned. If it has weak and thin walls, you need to install metal structures, after which calculations are made along with markings. In most cases, we will talk about the places where they are attached bearing structures and where is the installation planned? various kinds fixation profiles.

Particular attention should be paid to the fact that the automatic sectional doors do not allow even a tiny distortion. Therefore, precise alignment of racks and profiles on the plane is required, especially vertically, as well as reliable fastening each of the details. Especially carefully and efficiently it is necessary to align the load-bearing elements. Pegs made of wood or polyurethane foam- only metal linings that are prepared in advance; in addition, they are prepared with completely different thicknesses.

After installing the load-bearing parts and their reliable fastening, the installation of panels begins, which are laid in the lower part. The sections need to be connected using hinges, after which installation is carried out top panel, which is in mandatory adjacent to the strips. For this purpose, the use of upper brackets is required. And then, before installing sectional doors, you need to think about the control mechanism with various kinds of accessories. It is worth trying to properly fix the springs that will balance the structure, and the cables, which should always be tensioned. Next, the electric motor and the limiter are mounted. And when the entire structure has already been fully adjusted, it is checked. To do this, the gate just needs to be opened and closed a couple of times.

If the results do not require significant correction, the fastening units are re-tightened and each part is checked individually, which is especially important in the case of load-bearing structures.

It will be much easier to do all this if you use a special level. This is exactly how sectional garage doors are installed and assembled. This requires quite a lot of time, but at the same time the homeowner gets the opportunity to fully enjoy the process, although one assistant will still be extremely useful.

And with the money saved, it is quite possible to decorate the facade. For example, you can opt not for the usual smooth version of the sections; instead, they can be paneled or wavy. Or the design may have decorative windows, which will not only make it more original, but also provide additional lighting during daylight hours. And knowing the entire design and installation features of the gate, the owner will be able to outside help repair and maintain them yourself, although this is the advantage of mainly home-made options.

Swinging gates are rightfully considered the oldest species such structures that have become quite common due to their simplicity and ease of installation. The main thing you should take care of before thinking about how to build swing gates from sandwich panels is the free space required to open the doors.

Design

There are often cases when, for the manufacture of swinging garage structures openwork forged grilles are used. If we talk about the components of this type of gate, then this includes a rigid metal frame, casing, pipe posts measuring 60x30, hinges and a latch.

The metal frame looks like a welded element consisting of a 60x30x2 mm pipe. It also includes a steel frame inside, ensuring strength and preservation of the original shape. The design has pre-thought out the required mortgages needed to fasten the sheathing, as can be seen in the photo.

The frame is designed to fit optimally with the skin, so that the skin and frame form a single unit without any gaps or protrusions. The frames are so versatile that they can fit under various skins. If we talk about the angle of swing garage doors, then, as with sliding garage doors, their frame consists entirely of profile pipes measuring 60x30 for the outer contour and 20x40 for the inner frame, where the sheathing material is subsequently attached.

Installation process

Sandwich panels are most often used for lining swinging gates. You can choose the material yourself depending on your financial capabilities:

  • First of all, it is necessary to manufacture and install load-bearing columns. For them, you can use a profile metal pipe with a cross-section of 100x100 mm, dense timber or concrete, as shown in the photo. They should be concreted, maintaining a depth of more than 1 meter;

  • If you give preference to pillars made of bricks, then be prepared that you will need to concrete the foundation to a depth of more than 1 m and reinforce the foundation and pillar with reinforcement, as can be seen in the photo. Also, do not forget to pull out the small reinforcement from the post, which will later serve to fasten the racks. To concrete the columns you will need concrete, which is made from a cement composition, river sand and crushed stone, the ratio of which should be 1:4. Choose crushed stone of a smaller fraction so that there is less work. After pouring, the post must remain at rest for 7 days before you begin the next operation - installing the gate. While the concrete is hardening, you can start producing the canvas, as shown in the video;

  • First, try to rid the profiled metal pipes of corrosion traces and various deposits. You will need a grinder with a metal brush. Do not forget about safety glasses so that when interacting with this device you do not end up with metal shavings and scale in your eyes;
  • After cleaning is completed, the pipes are degreased with a solvent, and a primer layer for anti-corrosion, used for enamel paints, is applied to them. It is applied using a pussy or a spray gun. Moreover, it is important to remember that a brush, due to a denser layer of primer spraying, will give a more powerful anti-corrosion ability, and a spray gun will allow you to get excellent appearance. Then the primer should dry.

Welding

The next step is welding the frame of the swinging garage door:

  • This will require profile pipe 60x30x2 mm, with the help of which the sash frame of a suitable shape is welded. Then it is welded here inner tube with dimensions 40x20x2 mm. In this case, when lining on both sides, a pipe of this size is located in the middle, and when lining on one side with sandwich panels, a pipe of 60x30x2 mm will be required, and it will need to be moved to the edge. The pipe is welded with 2 cm tacks, the distance between them should be 20-25 cm;
  • The swing gate frame is ready. All that remains is the process of grinding the weld seams with a grinder with a grinding wheel, and then the final application of primer to the canvas. Now comes the coloring process alkyd enamels for external processes, which are sold at any construction point of sale. You can paint it either with a brush or with a spray gun.

Stitching

When the paint has completely dried, it’s time to sew up the fabric. This can be made with sandwich panels, sheet steel, forged parts or wood. This process can be considered creative, since this is where you should show all your imagination in order to give the gate individuality, as can be seen in the photo.

The gate leaf is ready, and the concrete of the supports has just fully cured, which indicates that installation can be carried out. If you have metal support columns, then you need to attach the sheet to them by welding. If the pillars are made of bricks or granite, then the hinges are attached by welding to a metal post, which is then attached to the pillars with dowels.

Let's sum it up

By choosing homemade swing gates made from sandwich panels, you will save a lot cash. And although the process of creating such products will take you some time, in the end you will get a gate that you will not find in anyone else around you.

It is no secret that for its owner a car is not only a means of transportation, but also a sign of status, a favorite hobby and practically a member of the family. And therefore, great attention is paid to caring for his “place of residence,” that is, the garage.

In addition, not every car owner can afford to equip a workshop and a garage separately, and therefore the garage performs both functions at once.

Car box

The operating conditions of a garage are noticeably different from residential premises. This is due to the characteristics of its main inhabitant – the car.

  • Temperature conditions - the car does not tolerate temperature changes well. Staying in a warm room at +20 C, and then moving it to frosty temperatures from -5 C, has a huge impact on the condition of the car. negative impact. Therefore, despite very coldy, car owners prefer to keep their cars on the street. As a result, the best mode for boxing is a stable temperature of about +5–+7 C. Garage doors made of sandwich panels and wall insulation perfectly solve this issue.
  • Fire safety is second essential requirement, since gasoline, engine oil, parts and equipment are usually stored in the box, which all together pose a great fire risk. In this regard, the insulation and finishing of the garage must be carried out with non-combustible materials. SIP panels are perfect for this role. The photo shows a garage door made of sandwich panels.

Garage door classification

Since the design of the boxes can differ noticeably from each other - in volume, type of extension, placement, and so on, many ways to close the latter have been created. According to the opening method, they are classified as follows.

  • Hinged - the most popular classic design of two doors. The reason for their prevalence is simple: any beginner who has the skills to work with a welding machine can make them with their own hands according to a drawing. They are usually made of steel, as they must have good mechanical strength and resist burglary, but sandwich panels, aluminum, and wood can also be used.

  • Recoil – door leaf moves to the side, like a wardrobe. Enough difficult decision to do it yourself, so it is recommended to purchase this option ready-made. Sliding gates Sandwich panels will provide not only tight, reliable closure, but also excellent thermal insulation. The photo shows a sample.
  • Sectional - consist of fragments that, when the sash is opened, are refracted at an angle and rise to the ceiling. Sandwich panels for this design are the best option.
  • Lifting and rotating - they are a solid canvas that moves in a vertical position.
  • Roller shutters are a very common solution as they take up minimal space. When open, the sash is rolled up in a box. However, it is almost impossible to insulate such a structure.

Characteristics of sandwich panels

The product is a composition of a layer of insulation and two layers facing material and has several important advantages, which allows us to recommend it for cladding swing or sliding doors.

For garage doors, slabs are used, where mineral wool - basalt or glass - is used as a filler, and galvanized painted steel acts as the outer layers.

  • Thermal insulation is not so important for a garage heat, how stable its value is, that is, independence from weather conditions from outside. Thermal insulation properties mineral wool, given its affordable cost, is very high.
  • Fire safety - mineral wool is distinguished by another extremely important quality for a garage - non-flammability. It is recommended to make gates made from sandwich panels using glass wool, as it is resistant to moisture and has a higher density.

Expanded polystyrene and polyurethane foam are also excellent heat insulators; you should choose only special brands - self-extinguishing ones. The rest of their modifications are flammable and emit toxic substances when burned.

  • Strength – SIP panels themselves, even with a steel outer layer, cannot provide high level safety: steel thickness does not exceed 0.8 mm. Therefore, if there is a danger of break-in, it is advisable to strengthen the doors.

Swing gates made of sandwich panels: assembly

For production you will need galvanized steel profile, sandwich panels with steel coating, grinder, welding machine, steel corners are optional, but with their help it is much easier to form a right angle, and a drawing with the indicated dimensions. Installation can be done by hand. The photo shows the working moment of assembly.

  1. The profile is cut according to the dimensions of the future swing gates.
  2. A frame is welded from a 60*30 profile, and the welding seams are cleaned.
  3. The frame for both sashes is made separately according to the drawing. A 60*30 profile is used for the sash frame, and 40*20 for internal guides. It is imperative to make sure that the sash is inserted into the frame with the necessary clearance for opening.
  4. The plate is secured to the frame with long self-tapping screws.
  5. The hinges are welded and the gate is installed. It is recommended to remove the packaging material from the panels only after installation has been completed.

In the video, the process of installing swing gates made of sandwich panels is presented in more detail.

Sandwich panels - wall material, consisting of two rigid planes with insulation between them. The joining of layers occurs under the influence of pressing.

The edges of the panels have a locking part for a strong connection with each other. Material released different sizes, which ensures minimal waste during installation.

The following fillers are used as insulation:

  1. Mineral cotton.
  2. Expanded polystyrene.
  3. Polyurethane foam.

The following are used as rigid sheets:

  1. Metal.

Suitable for garage assembly following parameters sandwich panels:

  1. Wall and roofing.
  2. With outer profiled sheet and galvanized inside.
  3. Expanded polystyrene insulation layer.
  4. Dimensions are selected depending on the dimensions of the garage and the type of installation.

Advantages of building garages from wall panels:

  1. The basis lightweight design a concrete slab or .
  2. Assembly can be done at any time of the year.
  3. Installation is quick and does not require the use of heavy equipment.
  4. The use of panels eliminates external cladding and Finishing work inside the garage.
  5. Thanks to the material, it increases thermal protection, sound insulation. Room all year round stays dry.
  6. The panels hold fire well. In the event of a fire, the fire will not escape further than the room.
  7. The technology allows for reassembly, which is important when changing the location of the garage.
  8. Long operational period(30 years) is guaranteed if the process sequence is followed.

Disadvantages of sandwich panel construction:

  1. The surface is scratch-resistant. The damaged area is almost impossible to restore.
  2. Mineral insulation absorbs moisture, so sealing must be done carefully.

Necessary materials

  1. Sand.
  2. Crushed stone.
  3. Gravel.
  4. Concrete slabs or concrete mortar.
  5. Sandwich panels.
  6. Hardware.
  7. Metal profiles of different widths.
  8. Seal.
  9. Sealant.
  10. Metal corner.

Tools for installation work:

  1. Hammer.
  2. Drill.
  3. Bulgarian.

  8. Plumb.
  9. Shovel.
  10. Hammer.

Foundation

The area under the garage can be leveled, covered with a layer of crushed stone and laid concrete plates, and close the connection cement mortar. But most often motorists prefer strip foundation under the frame. Reliable and solid foundation will prevent distortions during operation.

With low costs and a short time period, it will not be difficult to complete the work:

  1. The preparatory stage includes: clearing the area, leveling the surface and removing the turf.
  2. After marking is completed, a trench is dug for the foundation. The perimeter of the trench is determined by the size of the garage, and the dimensions are:
    • Depth 50 cm.
    • Width 30-40 cm.
  3. The connecting link between the soil and the foundation is a backfill consisting of sand (20 cm) and crushed stone (30 cm). Each layer must be compacted.
  4. To shape the foundation, formwork is installed in the trench from wooden planks, and the inside is covered with a film, which performs the function of waterproofing.
  5. A frame made of reinforcement is lowered inside the formwork. The reinforcement elements are connected using wire.
  6. Mixing concrete is done manually or using a concrete mixer. The solution is prepared at a ratio of 1:2:2, including:
    • Cement.
    • Sand.
    • Crushed stone.
  7. The formwork is filled with concrete to the edges. The top is covered with a film to prevent exposure to moisture during hardening. After at least 10 days, the frame can be installed on the foundation.

The work of constructing the foundation can be simplified by using concrete blocks. After laying in the trench, simply seal the seams. Saves money and time. The only limitation is moving soil. The joints may deform faster.

By characteristics concrete blocks not inferior to monolithic tape.

Garage floor

For making floors you can use cement screed. The poured and compacted area is filled with solution in two stages and allowed to settle. The second layer is often covered.

To create a more reliable and durable surface, concrete grade M-300 is used. If concrete mixture prepared by hand, the following proportions are observed:

  1. Sand - 3 parts.
  2. Cement – 1 part.
  3. Crushed stone – 1 part.

Stages of work:

  1. The surface is covered with a 10 cm layer of sand and compacted with a tamper. For effective compaction, the sand is slightly moistened.
  2. When forming the floor, you must maintain an inclination towards the gate (3 degrees). The trapped water will flow down the slope and will not deform the foundation and concrete floor.
  3. The entire surface is covered with reinforcing mesh to give the screed strength and prevent the formation of cracks.
  4. Beacons are installed on the foundation side using a level. It is easier to distribute the solution evenly over them, observing the slope.
  5. Pouring the floor with concrete and rule.
  6. To prevent precipitation or dust from getting on the concrete floor, it is recommended to cover it with film until it dries completely.

Frame installation:

  1. The frame is constructed from two types of profiles. Wider slats are used in the roofing part due to the greater load.
  2. Waterproofing the foundation surface bitumen mastic or roofing felt.
  3. Wide profiles are fixed along the perimeter of the base. Fastening to the foundation is best done with anchor bolts.
  4. The next elements of the assembly are the garage walls. Assembled rectangles from a thinner profile are installed on the bases and secured with self-tapping screws. During installation, control measurements of perpendicularity are carried out vertical racks to avoid skew. Also, the corners of all walls are reinforced with jibs.
  5. The transverse ribs are installed at intervals of 50 cm. If the material for the frame is steel, the gap can be increased to 80 cm.
  6. After assembling three walls are being executed roofing according to the roof configuration. The frame elements are made of wide profile. Gable structures reinforced by farms. One slope is performed with a mandatory slope.
  7. Hinge fastening for gates.
  8. Assembling the gate frame and screwing the second part of the hinges. The hinges can be fastened with bolts or using a welding machine.

Covering a garage with sandwich panels

The panels should be fastened in accordance with technological requirements to prevent distortion of the structure. The level will provide the main assistance in installation. There are two mounting options: horizontally and vertically. You can use any of them to cover your garage.

But it must be taken into account that horizontal laying more difficult to produce due to the size and weight of the slab.

  1. You need to start installation from the sides. Attach the first panel to the frame and first fix the upper corner to align it with a plumb line, then secure it with several self-tapping screws with a sealing washer. When fixing hardware into the upper wave, it is important not to overtighten so that the surface does not deform.
  2. Subsequent connections are made using a lock along the edge of the sandwich panels. To do this, use sealing self-adhesive tape and sealant. Special clamps will facilitate installation and increase the tightness of the fit.
  3. Sheathing is done around the perimeter of the garage, after which the roof is laid. As roofing material wall or roof panels are used.
  4. Hang the gate frames on the hinges and secure the panels to them. After covering, install locks, bolts and other fittings.
  1. The joints between the slabs must be sealed to prevent freezing and the formation of dampness. Periodically, sealing materials need to be replaced.
  2. It is recommended to cut the panels with a jigsaw, since the edges of the insulation are melted with a grinder.
  3. The roof design must take into account the climate of the region for accessible snow removal in winter.
  4. The basis for installing a garage made of sandwich panels can be a flat surface of dense soil, covered with crushed stone. The bedding must be compacted thoroughly.
  5. Protective linings on the roof are treated with sealant before installation.
  6. If used mineral insulation in panels, the garage must be equipped with a drain.
  7. In case of use wooden beam in the frame, it is necessary to treat the parts with antiseptic and fire-fighting substances before installation.
