I did it in the evenings and took days off because the weather was bad. It took about a week if not more. And they covered the roof with bitumen-polymer roll coating. This is for your reference.

And the thickness of the roofing material was about 5 centimeters. Apparently for 20 years everyone put roofing felt only from the top.

How life began in our garage.

That's where the swamp is. And anyone can have such dampness, they just don’t know it yet.

The weather helped well, there was wind and sometimes there was no rain. The roof was blown by the wind and it dried out.

An old, unnecessary ax is the best remedy.

And a broom, of course, with a woman))).

The seams are full of sand and finely crumbled 20-year-old concrete, if of course it was here.

You will certainly be surprised, there was asphalt here! It was still soft and raw.

4 days of work were not in vain. Here is the result!

We clean the roof surface from debris, stones and dust.

Here is the tile seam itself in our garage. Which will later need to be filled with solution. They did not begin to shovel all the rubble away from the pipe. Only large cobblestones.

7 days have arrived. We are finally starting to pour the screed onto our roof. So there was a feeling of some kind of middle stage of this dreary task.

We level with improvised means.

Concrete was mixed by hand in a basin. We bought cement and bags of screenings.

So we filled the seams and more or less leveled the surface. The thickness of the screed is different everywhere. I’ve already forgotten the proportions like a bad dream).

We measure the width of the surface to be covered again.

The next stage is covered with bitumen mastic or impregnation, although this is probably the same thing. If there is anything, please correct it. I think it's a bitumen primer. And in addition, I coated and spilled the seams with this kind of thing between my new and old neighbor’s roofs, bought 3 kg and 1.5 liters of salvent was used for dilution.

We also cover the edge of the adjacent roofing material, since we will be making the second layer overlapping.

The end has come The final stage, rented equipment. We filled it with gas.

We cover the roof in two layers with this Uniflex HPP material. And Uniflex HKP is mine upper layer- this is a business class material, there are cheaper and more expensive ones.

We lay the first layer with Technonikol, in principle it’s a good thing, it’s quite thick, 4 mm, and acts as a hydro-insulation. To be more precise, a bitumen polymer roll coating.

Preparing soft roofs for repair work

To ensure better adhesion of materials, it is necessary to properly prepare the roof for repair:

cut the place where the roofing material is damaged with a knife crosswise and bend the edges of the material outward;

if sheet roofing material If it is badly damaged, it is better to replace it completely; craftsmen advise not to patch the roof in small pieces, but to lay a new sheet of covering. Important. Several layers of roofing felt are laid so that the joints do not coincide. This will prevent the destructive effects of moisture.

Repairs must be carried out in warm, dry weather, temperatures above ten degrees.

Let's start the renovation

After the damage site has been cleaned and prepared, we begin roof repairs:

cut out squares of roofing material according to the size of the prepared patches;
lubricate the holes in the coating with mastic or resin and apply a patch;
it is important that the mastic or resin fills all voids;
press the patch;
Apply a layer of mastic on top again and close the previously folded edges of the patch, tightly pressing the edges to the adhesive base;
apply another layer of mastic;
It is very important that there are no voids or gaps through which water will penetrate. Therefore, on top of the repaired area, you need to similarly glue another piece of roofing felt of a larger size (the upper patch should overlap the lower patch on all sides by 15 centimeters).

Such partial repairs are not suitable for an old, worn-out roof; the entire roof must be replaced.

Laying roofing felt

Repairing a garage roof with roofing felt is an inexpensive but tedious process:

before laying, you need to let the material rest and level out, this will take a day;
We begin the installation of roofing felt from the lowest point of the pitched roof;
first you need to apply a layer of tar, on which we lay strips of roofing material;
We carry out the steps in stages - apply tar, glue the strip;
the coating strips are laid with an overlap of 10 - 15 centimeters;
along the edges of the strip, we must insulate the joints with molten bitumen;
If the base is uneven and bubbles have formed, they must be carefully trimmed with a knife and leveled. Be sure to apply a layer of tar over the cut;
depending on the slope of the garage roof, it is necessary to choose the number of layers of roofing material: a slope of up to 15 degrees - four layers, a slope of up to 40 degrees - three layers, a slope of more than 45 degrees - two layers of coating.

Advice. We lay out the bottom layer with roofing felt or fine-grained roofing felt, and for the top layer only coarse-grained roofing felt is suitable, it is more durable.

Bikrost - convenient and practical

Coating a garage roof with bicrost is simple, quick and inexpensive. With Bicrost, you can patch holes in your roof quickly and easily using gas burner. The sequence of bicrost repair and installation is as follows:

clean and prime everything old surface roofs;
Roll out the bicrost roll to 50 cm and heat it with a gas burner. Particular attention to the edges and corners of the tape;
press the heated sheet to the roof. It is convenient to use a mop stick (like the letter T) or a heavy roller to press tightly with a stick;
sequentially heat 50 cm of bikrost and glue it to the roof in the same way;
The overlap of the strips of material should be no less than 8 cm.

Bikrost is much more convenient and stronger than roofing felt, but you need to work quickly, the material hardens quickly. It is better to work with a partner - one rolls out and presses, the other heats the material with a burner.

Important. You should not walk on the newly laid covering, as the seal may be broken and the roof will be uneven.

Liquid rubber – reliable, durable and comfortable

Liquid rubber can also be sprayed onto corrugated sheeting, this will reduce corrosion and provide good waterproofing roofs.

Polyurethane mastic for roofing, popularly known as " liquid rubber"is a miracle material that is a pleasure to work with.

In terms of density, viscosity and consistency, the composition is similar to water, so you can safely cover the entire cleaned surface of the roof with an airless sprayer under pressure. A regular sprayer cannot be used. After polymerization, liquid rubber forms a dense and durable sealed film.

This coating has no seams, is completely monolithic and hermetically sealed, there are practically no leaks of the coating for 20 years.

Covering the entire roof with liquid rubber is simple:

clean the surface, dry and prime;
along the primer, you need to lay a layer of geotextile on all abutments and connections of the roof, Special attention corners;
geotextiles must be installed inside and outside;
the composition is applied from a special machine - a two-channel sprayer.

The coating hardens a couple of minutes after application.

Repairing a hard roof on a garage

Popular hard coverings are corrugated sheets and slate, less commonly used for garage roofs roofing iron. Most often, leaks are found in hard roofing around the ridge and at the joints of sheets.

Repair of corrugated sheets

You just need to replace the damaged coating sheets with new ones. To do this you will need simple tools:

ordinary screwdriver;
metal screws for corrugated sheets, it is better to take screws with wide heads and fasten them using waterproofing mastic(a tube will be enough for work);
jigsaw and tape measure;
sheets of corrugated sheets (quantity as needed).

Repair of a roof made of corrugated roofing, sequence:

dismantle damaged sheets;

check the waterproofing layer and, if necessary, replace the damaged piece with a new one. The waterproofing must be laid in place with an overlap of approximately 10 cm, no less;
when replacing corrugated sheets, you must follow the rule - overlap the adjacent sheet by one wave - this will ensure high-quality waterproofing;
We mount the sheet on self-tapping screws in increments of 50–60 cm, and additionally seal the joints.

Advice. Painted corrugated sheeting is more durable. You can also coat the sheets yourself with water-repellent paint from a spray gun, this will ensure the metal’s resistance to corrosion.

Slate roof repair

If several sheets have cracked, do not rush to completely replace the entire sheet. Minor damage to slate can be repaired using a simple and inexpensive mixture.

For the repair mortar you will need cement, asbestos crumbs (you can finely grind a piece of slate) and PVA glue. Mix the ingredients, you should get a mixture the thickness of good sour cream.

We quickly putty on cracks and chips - the solution hardens very quickly. Therefore, it is better to work in dry, cloudy weather or in the evening, so that there is no direct sunlight.

To repair slate, you can use a special duct tape(for exterior use) or mastic for slate, but this will cost more.

If the cracks in the sheets are too large, then you can install patches made of sheet copper; it bends easily and is not subject to corrosion.

Complete replacement of damaged slate

It is better to carry out such roof repairs together, as the sheets are heavy. First we dismantle old leaf using a nail puller to remove all slate nails. The next step is simple:

lay a layer of roofing felt;
lay a new sheet of slate;
the overlap of the sheets should be in the direction of the wind, which most often occurs in your region;
We fix the sheet with slate nails. You need to drive nails into the wave to avoid cracks.

Important. You can make homemade rubber gaskets under the nails to prevent leaks. This will keep the sheet from cracking and serve as an additional seal.

Why do garage owners have to deal with roofing repairs? Basically, in garage cooperatives, buildings are connected into an integral array, in which moisture and temperature changes have almost no effect on the walls. Most often, the roof becomes unusable and experiences all the “delights” of weather conditions.

Gas cylinder.

Operating procedure:

All debris and dust are removed from the roof surface;
using a grinder with grinding disc or sandpaper, in places where cracks are sealed, remove a layer of protective coating;
the base of the roofing material is degreased, for which you can use gasoline, acetone or alcohol;
then take the prepared bitumen and slowly pour it into the crack;
after the bitumen has hardened, this operation is performed one or two more times, until the damaged area in the roofing material is completely leveled.

There is another method of closing leaks that will help you figure out how to close the garage roof to prevent leaks - installing roofing felt patches. They are perfect for eliminating minor damage that has appeared in different places on the canvas. To make patches you will need roofing felt with flake or coarse dusting, bitumen mastic, a knife, varnish and a piece of emery.

For this method of eliminating defects, you will need to perform the following steps:

Clean the roof. The base of the slopes must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and other contaminants.
Preparation. The protective coating is removed from the restored surface, and to ensure better adhesion between the layers, they are degreased and dried.
We make patches. We take roofing material and cut patches - their size should be one and a half to two times the area of the defective area. In order for the patches to acquire an even shape, they are placed on a flat surface for 1-3 hours.
Next, bitumen is poured onto the treated area to obtain a film that will improve the adhesion of the patch.
The inner base of the roofing felt patches is heated with a gas burner, and then pressed firmly against problem area roofs.
Next, the upper part of the patch is opened with one or two layers of kukersol varnish or bitumen mastic to increase waterproofing qualities restored place.

It is worth noting that to create patches, it is advisable to take roofing material with a density of at least 400 g/m2 with stone powder. To simplify the work, you can take material with a self-adhesive base, and they should only be performed at a temperature environment above 5℃.

How to carry out routine repairs correctly

If the roof has significant damage, then simply sealing the cracks on the garage roof with something will not work - you will have to partially replace the material. Sometimes there is no need to install a new coating, however, if bubbles appear on the surface, then first of all the top layers of material under which water has collected are removed.

To properly cover the slope with new sheets of roofing material, you will need:

Dismantle old material. Remove 1 or 2 layers of used roofing felt, on which a large number of blisters and other defects have formed.
On the bubbles that have formed on the surface of the roof, make a cross-shaped cut in the center with a knife, remove all moisture from them, and then allow them to dry.
The layer of powder is removed from the base of the roof. To speed up the work, which is not enough, it is better to take a grinder with a special attachment. Keep in mind that all actions must be performed with extreme care so that holes do not appear in the roofing material.
The prepared base is primed with bitumen mastic to obtain a sticky film - this will allow the new layer of roofing felt to adhere better.
A few hours later, after the mastic has partially set, proceed to installing a new layer of roofing material. It is laid with a slight overlap of 10-15 cm. The inner base of the material, covered with fusible bitumen, is heated, and then pressed firmly against the old coating.
The second strip of roofing material is placed at intervals from the first. If you don’t know how to coat the seams on the garage roof, then the same bitumen mastic will do.

Experts advise repairing garage roofs only in dry, calm weather and at ambient temperatures above 5 ℃. To avoid injuring yourself, follow safety rules and do not neglect insurance.

Any type of garage roof needs timely repairs, since leaks and other defects are a common occurrence during the operation of the premises. Before starting repairs, the scale is determined necessary repairs, materials are selected and a range of works is carried out.

Repairing garage roof leaks
