With edgebanding equipment, the material can be glued to the edges of workpieces using a special superglue. In the absence of this apparatus, not a single woodworking enterprise will be able to function. Manufacturers from all over the world can recommend a different range of these machines. The system of this device is uncomplicated, so you can make a portable edge banding machine on one's own.

Nowadays, this special equipment acts basis for the manufacture of products on furniture factories . Edge banding is a bonding process finishing material in order to guarantee an attractive appearance product. This method has become widespread in the manufacture of furniture, where the limited edges of plates or panel elements are subject to beautiful finish. To date, there is a huge selection of patterns and colors, which forces designers to create new machines.

Paper, melamine, veneer, ABC, PVC, 0.4 - 3 mm thick and 2 - 6 cm wide can be used as the used material. The "blank - glue - material" system is considered the basis of the technology. Due to the compression and rearrangement, the cladding is firmly fixed on the edge.

Many machines are guided by the use of glue, which melts when heated, and solidifies rapidly when cooled. Such a technique requires a strict adjustment of the order of temperature and pressing the parts to be glued with a certain force. If you do not think about it, the system may lose stability, and the cladding may fall off.

Instrument design

In the frame of the equipment, a table made of textolite or similar material is placed, which does not make it possible to spoil the workpiece. The main module is installed on the table, behind which a milling unit can be located to eliminate overhangs. The advantage of such equipment can be characterized by its mobility, since the dimensions make it possible to transport the power machine to the location of the part. In addition, there are plug-in guides to function with solid strip cladding.

The feeding system includes:

  • roll;
  • guillotine;
  • videos.

For the base, a lining material is introduced into the magazine, from which the tape is attracted by rollers to the gluing area. In order to adjust the tape feed rate, the roller drive must have a controlled spin frequency. The guillotine cuts the tape in such a way that it is long enough to compensate for the entire edge and 25 mm for the allowance. The electric drive of the guillotine can be automatic or pneumatic. Using the workpiece position sensor, the moment of operation of the guillotine is determined.

Machine equipment

The machine is often supplied system for heating and applying glue. This is produced in two different alternatives - for the edging material to be supplied with and without adhesive. With option 1, superglue is already in the tape, however, it is heated with heated air using a hair dryer. In case 2, superglue is heated in a bath and applied to the plane of the tape using a roller. It should be noted that certain modifications have 2 rollers, from which the second one is needed to apply the adhesive to the edge of the part.

The next component is the glue bath, where the superglue for the edgebander is heated to a temperature of 200 degrees, does not stick, has a uniform density and circulates well.

Mostly used:

  • baths with teflon coating;
  • temperature sensors.

Certain modifications have a cartridge for applying the selected adhesive to the plane.

The pressure system has the form of a main roller. If the tape is in contact with the finishing material, there is a specific compressive force of these parts. If the manual edge banding machine has a mechanical feed, then the tape is pressed onto the edge by one or more rollers, which are placed in turn.

In toolings with manual feed of the part, this function can be performed by a person who feeds the part and at the same time presses it against the outgoing tape.

One or 2-3 rollers are used as a support. However, this method will require good skills. In addition to the measured order, the feed rate of the workpiece and the tape is constantly adjusted in order to prevent tearing or assembling of the tape. Most sophisticated equipment makes it possible to control the machine in auto mode, using electronics.

The principle of operation of the device

For gluing, a tape is used, the width of which is 2-5 mm greater than the height of the element. This is done for precise edge closure. As a rule, after gluing, the so-called overhangs remain, which are indicated from two edges. In order to remove them, a milling module is used, which cuts off the lining that extends beyond the boundaries of the part.

Usually the mechanism is endowed high-speed drive with 12 thousand turns per minute so as not to damage the plane. In addition, the module takes into account limited rollers for the correct installation of the workpiece. The unit is endowed with 2 milling cutters with drives, it is adjusted to the required height of the part. In order to delicately adjust the module and secure it, a movement system with a "screw - nut" transmission is activated.

After cutting with a knife, the tape is glued to the edge. In order to exclude it, a trimming module should be used, the system of which may be different. The simplest type involves a circular saw that has a vertical movement and is equipped with a drive with low power.

On a special command, this electric saw enters the working area of the edging machine and saws off an extra section of the cladding. This principle can only function in machines with manual feed. If the delivery is mechanized, the end module is the most difficult. The power saw with a drive is inserted according to the instructions for the machine on a carriage that has 2 short directions: the first for saw feed to eliminate the tape allowance, and the 2nd for smooth feed speed of the workpiece. The edge banding machine can be supplemented with a large number of multifunctional elements.

Edging devices with manual feed are involved not only in domestic circumstances or workshops. Even large furniture companies have this device for rapid repair and cladding of exclusive blanks, small batches of parts.

Due to the presence of processors, controllers, devices with manual feed of parts are considered very convenient and easy to manage. The main processes during the working period are the feed rate, automated temperature control, and, in addition, the length of the bonded material.

The manual feed unit operates with material up to 3 mm, consumes about 2 kW of electricity, captures an area of up to 2-3 square meters. meters, operated by a single user and maintains a part feed rate of 6 meters per minute. In order for the machine systems to be able to work, a system is connected under a pressure of 0.6 MPa of compressed air.

Usually the machine is tested first, while controlling the safety of the glue line and the degree of adhesion of the glue. To perform the test, it is possible to use a colorless PVC film, which makes it possible to observe the distribution of the adhesive composition after compression and polymerization. If the work shift changes, it is also recommended to carry out tests to prevent the appearance of a latent violation.

The entire cutting mechanism is well honed. This applies to knives and cutters. Remember to clean the glue pot regularly.

The edge banding unit may have a fence and marking of heated surfaces. The fixture frame must be grounded. The device must be connected to an aspiration system, as heated superglue can release toxic substances that are hazardous to health.

Such a device does not require any complicated settings. It is necessary to correct the heating temperature, correctly set the rotational speed of the rollers that apply superglue, and the feed rate. It is very important that during application the volume of adhesive is optimally corresponded the right conditions . If it is not enough, the strength of the relationship between the material used and the workpiece may be lost. Excess glue will lead to an excess amount on the plane and the appearance of dirt.

Self-manufacturing of the machine

Due to the significant cost of edgebanding equipment, many choose homemade edging devices, however, their safety equipment is lame, for this reason you should be very careful. First of all, rather than thinking about the design of the machine, you should focus on the thickness of the material used, with which the special equipment will function, think about what material it will function with, and what kind of devices must be mandatory. For the base, a base should be organized, which contains a system for supplying a finishing material, pressing, heating and applying an adhesive composition.

The standard equipment of the machine includes:

Edge banding machines are used in almost all woodworking firms, but their design and system components can vary significantly. It depends mainly on the size of the work that is done with this apparatus.

For the most modern and complex modifications of edge banding machines, take into account a tank that is designed to heat the glue and applying to the edge of this composition. The tank is equipped with handles and a roller that rolls the material to the edge, which in this machine is located on a special separate support. These devices are designed for gluing thicker plastics onto workpieces.

Overhangs of material that occur when facing with home-made machines are usually removed manually using specialized devices.

These include a variety of longitudinal guillotine devices that cut off the overhang and form chamfers on the edges of the product. All components of the system are fastened with comfortable handles for control.

Worth remembering that when working on such a block, facing material should be used in rolls, on which it has already been applied adhesive composition, otherwise you simply cannot fix anything at all. Since for the production of edge banding machine with my own hands you will still need certain parts, do not expect that the manufacture of the unit will cost you very cheaply.

It is sometimes advisable to replace solid wood with wood-based boards. This is especially true in the manufacture of cabinet furniture.

Plates are good. They have sufficient strength, are durable, but on one condition - the surface of the plate must be laminated, and the ends must be pasted over with a special tape.

It is possible to process the edge of a single product manually, but with large volumes of work this is inefficient.

The edging machine will help to paste over the ends of the parts. It is easy to buy such a device ready-made, choosing the optimal model, or make it yourself.

Why do you need a edging machine

As soon as the material is cut, all the necessary details are cut out, their edges are pasted over with tape from various materials. These are mainly materials based on PVC, paper, processed fabrics. This procedure is designed to solve several problems at once.

Decorative design. Edge banding tapes are available in various textures and colors. Most often, a material is used that imitates the texture of wood or stone.

Plate protection. The tape used for edge banding is made from materials on polymer base. It is characterized by high strength and wear resistance. This coating protects the slab from possible physical damage, moisture penetration, destruction of the structure due to swelling.

Protecting people from harmful fumes. A modern wood-based board is created using high quality materials and binders, however, chipboard can release toxins during the first months of operation. To protect the owner from the harmful effects of his own furniture and the machine for edging laminated chipboard is called.

Devices of this type are highly specialized, however, such a machine must certainly be in the household of a master who manufactures furniture.

Types of edging machines

The industry produces various edging machines that differ in a number of characteristics. When choosing a model for your own workshop, you should pay attention to a number of specific features one device or another. First of all, devices are divided according to their design into manual and stationary.

The difference is obvious - hand tool held in hands, moving it along the end face of the workpiece. During the movement, the edge banding (edge banding, as it is also called) machine prepares the tape, glues it and presses it to the end of the plate. The stationary machine is installed motionless, the workpieces are placed on the tabletop and moved along the working module.

Note! Stationary machines differ in the type of workpiece feed. Distinguish devices with manual feed and fully automatic.

Machines with manual feed are small in size and can work with curved workpieces. Automatic ones do not require the presence of an operator, but only process straight edges.

Same stationary devices can be classified according to the degree of difficulty. There are three categories:

  • simple machine;
  • medium complexity device with cutting function;
  • professional edging device.

Simple machines can only glue the edge, most often PVC tape with an adhesive already applied is used for this. Subsequent trimming and alignment is done manually. Machines of medium complexity, in addition to gluing, cut off excess material. Concerning professional devices, then they are able to create a perfectly aligned surface, often with polishing.

Basic structural elements

The stationary PVC edge banding machine consists of a frame, a frame on which the worktop is fixed, and one or more working modules. Textolite or other relatively soft material is used as a material for the desktop, which will not damage the laminated surface of the plate.

A module is attached to the tabletop, which is responsible for feeding the tape, cutting it, heating it up and applying glue to the work surface and, in fact, gluing. In most cases, this module allows fine adjustment, which allows you to work with material of various widths.

One of the main components of the module is the tape feed system. It includes a pin for installing a roll, a drive and several guide rollers, a guillotine-type cutter. The guillotine is driven by a mechanical or pneumatic drive. The drive roller has an adjustable rotation speed, which allows the machine to be used for processing parts with complex geometry.

As a material for pasting the edge, a tape without an adhesive composition previously applied to it can be used. To work with such material, the module has a heated glue tray. The prepared composition is evenly applied to the tape using a roller. In the case of using a tape with glue, a bath is not needed; a heater is used to glue the tape, which heats up adhesive layer. The tape is pressed with a roller.

Note! In order to get a completely finished board at the output, the edge gluer is additionally equipped with a milling module.

It is a high-speed rotating cutter that cuts off excess material and levels surfaces in all planes. After the router, an optional polishing module is installed, which perfectly aligns the cuts and the side surface.

The design of automatic edging machines also includes a system for feeding and moving the plate. It consists of several rubberized rollers that support the workpiece and give it a speed that exactly matches the speed of laying the edgeband.

Do-it-yourself edging machine

Factory-made devices are expensive, so for a small home workshop it is advisable to make the machine yourself. A self-made edge glue machine will be noticeably inferior to purchased counterparts in terms of power and productivity, but it can easily cope with the amount of work in the home workshop of a novice furniture maker.

When planning to make such an edge unit with your own hands, you should soberly assess your strengths. The edge banding machine is a device of increased danger, and the safety of the operator depends on the quality of its assembly. It is important to understand that the working bodies of the machine are heated to very high temperatures. When using it, you must be careful and follow the safety rules.

Structural elements

Devices of this type are used in various industries, while they have different design. In general homemade machine should include:

  • stable bed and comfortable table;
  • belt feed and centering unit;
  • heater with temperature control system;
  • heat-resistant guides;
  • trimming system for excess edges;
  • polishing module.

The totality of all these nodes is a rather complex device, therefore, for home use, you can limit yourself to a simpler design. In a home-made edging machine, you can do without excessive automation, leaving only a device that feeds the tape and a device for heating it. In this case, you will have to use a tape with a pre-applied adhesive composition, which is somewhat more expensive, but at the same time it will be possible to save on the complex components of the machine.

Properly manufactured, this device can be used as a edging machine for boards, plywood, wood boards and other similar material. The machine will have simple design, for his consciousness will not require expensive components and assemblies.

Assembly order

First of all, you need a tabletop made of textolite or plywood, pasted over with plastic. A horizontal stop is attached to it, a metal square, to which the workpiece will be pressed.

As heating element and at the same time pressing it is rational to use a metal roller heated from building hair dryer. A cutout is provided in the guide square at the exit point of the roller. Part of the square behind the roller can be pasted over with soft material, felt or cloth, which will serve for polishing.

Actually, the machine is ready. You just need to screw a pin into the tabletop, which will become the axis of the roll, bring the end of the tape into the working area, turn on the hair dryer and wait until it heats up the roller. Next, the end of the workpiece is brought to the horizontal stop and you can glue the beginning of the tape. The workpiece is moved along the guide, while trying not to overheat the tape, but also to ensure maximum bond strength.

Care of the edging machine

It does not matter whether factory equipment is used or a simple machine made by oneself, it is necessary to observe safety measures when working with it and ensure its timely Maintenance. There are several important rules that, if ignored, could result in device failure or injury to the operator.

  1. Before starting work, be sure to study the device and the principle of operation of the edging machine, the location of the controls.
  2. Before switching on the device, it is necessary to verify the integrity of the supply cables and protective mechanisms.
  3. Keep oil, water and other liquids out of the working area.
  4. Keep the workplace clean.
  5. The moving parts of the device must be lubricated with the recommended lubricants.
  6. In the process of work, it is necessary to control the temperature of the pressure roller, to prevent overheating, burning of the adhesive composition.
  7. If difficulties arise during the operation of the factory equipment, you should not try to fix them yourself, you should seek help from specialists.

Times are changing, technology is making life much easier for a home craftsman. Now it’s easier than ever to make furniture yourself, you just need a few tools and equipment. Those who have a desire to try themselves as a furniture maker are unlikely to be able to do without it. useful device. To begin with, it is worth making a simple device, trying yourself in a new quality, and then thinking about buying full-fledged factory equipment.

Homemade machine

A homemade edgebander is usually assembled to perform small amounts of work. People who are knowledgeable in assembling complex mechanisms, familiar with its structure and principle of operation can take on this business.

Below is a drawing of the edging unit. Having studied the documentation, you can start building:

  • On metal frame lay a sheet of textolite or similar material. The table top must have smooth surface not capable of damaging the furniture blank.
  • The main unit of equipment is mounted on the table, combined with a milling cutter to remove edge overhangs.
  • The machine should move easily around the workpiece. To do this, the block is placed on a special suspension.
  • The feeding system includes a roll of edging tape, a guillotine cutter and rollers.
  • The guillotine should cut the tape at the end of the end of the workpiece with an overlap of about 25 mm. To do this, the knife is combined with a pneumatic or mechanical drive.

  • The machine can be equipped with systems for heating or applying glue. If a tape with an adhesive back surface is used, then a heating device is installed (an ordinary household hair dryer or a more powerful heater). The hair dryer heats the adhesive surface of the tape, and the drive roller presses it against the end surface.
  • The use of the adhesive method requires a special bath. The adhesive composition is heated in a container and fed to the edge with a special roller.
  • Particular attention should be paid to containers with adhesive composition. It is important that the temperature inside the bath is in the range of 150-200 o C. This temperature regime does not allow the adhesive composition to burn and maintains the desired level of viscosity of the composition. Durability of the bath gives an internal Teflon coating.
  • The presence of two or three guide rollers will ensure a uniform feed of the tape. This will avoid accidental tearing or wrinkling of the edging material.
  • For cladding, a tape is used 2-3 mm wider than the end thickness.
  • It is important to synchronize the action of the saw with the feed rate of the lining. This is ensured by special sensors and a system of pressure rollers.

For the irregular performance of small amounts of work, a home-made machine is the most profitable solution.

To process the edges of MDF, chipboard or other similar varieties of modern sheet materials, you need to use special edging equipment. Manually without using special arrangements It's very difficult to do this kind of work. To obtain excellent result everything must be done very painstakingly and subtly.

You can buy such equipment, but it is very expensive. As a result of this, a more economical option would be a home-made edge banding machine, which, having drawings, can be made by everyone.

The design of a homemade edging machine

The simplest in design machine for processing edges of modern sheet materials consists of the following elements:

  • feed mechanism to the edge of the material from the roll;
  • pressure roller;
  • adhesive heater;
  • adhesive application system.

To make a homemade edge banding machine with your own hands, you can use separate spare parts for various power tools or immediately ready-made household appliances.

For example, an ordinary hair dryer can be used as a heater, a hand-held electric drill successfully performs the functions of a pressure roller drive.

What parts should be in the machine

Another version of the edge banding machine

To make the drawing and design of such a device simpler, you can use materials on which glue has already been previously applied during work. In this case, not only will the process of processing the edges of the material be simplified, but the dimensions of the entire machine will also be reduced.

To advance the workpiece along the pressure roller, you can use some kind of special guide mechanism or do it manually, which, again, will simplify its design.

If it is not possible to use a material with applied glue, it is additionally necessary to equip the machine with a container in which the glue will be constantly heated during operation.

For the convenience of performing all work with the machine, it must have a separate mechanism that cuts off excess material for edge cladding, which necessarily arise during such work. To do this, you can use any guillotine device. by the most convenient option there will be such a longitudinal device that cuts off all the excess right when the workpiece moves.

Thus, it is not difficult to make an edge banding machine with your own hands, and you will not need to buy any expensive parts. Therefore, using it to repair furniture will be a very simple and not at all costly process.

Examples of drawings and diagrams

Do-it-yourself homemade edge banding machine

DIY edge banding machine (photo)

For processing products made of fiberboard, MDF and other sheet materials, special equipment is required for processing the ends of panels - this is a delicate and painstaking work, its manual implementation is unlikely to be convenient. Therefore, you need to purchase special equipment or, even better, make a homemade edge banding machine with your own hands. Firstly, making equipment yourself is saving money, and secondly, it is a valuable experience and practice in engineering, which is necessary for every homeworker. Moreover, the principle of operation and the device of the edge banding machine are quite simple.

Application of edge banding equipment

The main scope of such equipment is furniture production, here this type of machine is one of the required elements technical equipment. For industrial needs, numerous models of machines are offered, differing in performance, functions, price and other characteristics and suitable for working with both straight and curved surfaces. This group of units has a common characteristic - their performance is too high for private use, so it makes no sense to spend money on acquiring a professional model.

The principle of operation for both factory and home-made machines is approximately the same - a decorative strip of material is glued to the raw end of the panel, which not only covers the raw material, but also protects the structure of the panels.

Edge banding equipment can work with various materials, including:

The layer of material can be very thin - from 0.4 mm, the width of the strip, as a rule, is from 2 to 6 cm. A special glue is used for gluing, which firmly fixes the decorative edge.

Making and setting up a homemade edge banding machine

It should be noted right away that without sufficient experience in working with tools and materials and an understanding of the principle of operation of this equipment, it is unlikely that an excellent result will be achieved. If self-confidence is sufficient, then you can safely begin to study the available diagrams and assembly tips.

In order to properly design the machine, you need to decide on the following parameters:

  • type of facing material;
  • the thickness of the material used for the edge;
  • required features of the equipment.

The most important thing at the manufacturing stage is to correctly assemble the base. It consists of edge feeding mechanism, pressure roller, heating element and adhesive application system. For their manufacture, you can use spare parts for power tools and entire appliances. For example, a hair dryer is suitable for heating, and an electric drill can be used to drive the pressure roller.

To simplify the scheme of the machine, you can use materials with glue already applied to them. This will not only simplify the manufacturing process, but also reduce the size of the machine. To move the workpiece along the pressure roller, it is necessary to provide a guide mechanism.

If it is not possible to use strips with pre-applied glue, it is necessary to provide for the presence in the design of a special container for glue, where it will be preheated. It is also necessary to equip the device with a mechanism for cutting off excess material for edges, it can be any device of the guillotine type.

As can be understood from the foregoing, making a homemade edge banding machine with your own hands is not so difficult, it does not require complex and expensive elements. Therefore, subsequent repairs will be quite simple. And if you don’t want to get involved with repairs, purchase branded equipment, and let the service center specialists deal with it if it breaks down.

In the furniture production of medium and small enterprises, a manual machine is used.

What to look for when choosing an edging

The purchase of edge banding equipment is determined by the needs of the consumer. The following factors influence the choice of machine tools:

  1. Productivity - the number of linear meters of processed ends per shift.
  2. The weight and power of the unit.
  3. The versatility of critical units that perform several functions at once can affect product quality. It is better and more reliable when each node does its job separately.
  4. Equipped with a screw compressor with refrigeration air dryer and filters.

Homemade machine

Homemade edge banding machine is usually assembled to perform small amounts of work. People who are knowledgeable in assembling complex mechanisms can take on this business. To make equipment with your own hands, you need to understand its device.

Below is a drawing of the edge unit device. Having studied the documentation, you can start building:

  • A sheet of textolite or similar material is laid on a metal frame. The tabletop must have a smooth surface that is not capable of damaging the furniture blank.
  • The main unit of equipment is mounted on the table, combined with a milling cutter to remove edge overhangs.
  • The machine should move easily around the workpiece. To do this, the block is placed on a special suspension.
  • The cladding tape supply system includes an edging tape roll, a guillotine cutter and rollers.

DIY edge banding machine

With the help of edge banding equipment, the material can be glued to the edges of the workpieces using a special adhesive. Without this unit, not a single woodworking enterprise will be able to work. Manufacturers from all over the world can offer a different range of these machines. The design of this device is not complicated at all, so you can make a portable edge bander yourself.

Purpose of the edge banding machine

The first edge bander was invented a very long time ago, to be precise - in five years it will be half a century since the introduction of a continuous edge banding machine using hot melt adhesive. Currently, this equipment is the basis of production at furniture factories. There are many manufacturers of these machines from Germany, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain, Japan, Turkey and China.

Edge banding is the process of gluing a banding material onto the edge to provide a beautiful appearance to the product. This method is widely used in the production of furniture, where the narrow edges of slabs or panel parts are to be beautifully finished. Today there is a huge choice of patterns and shades, which forces designers to develop new edgebanders.

As a material, you can use paper, veneer, melamine, ABC, PVC, the thickness of which is 0.4 - 3 millimeters, and the width is 2 - 6 centimeters. The basis of the technology is the system "harvesting - adhesive mixture- adhesive material. Thanks to a special compression and transformation, the cladding is securely fastened to the edge.

Many edge banders rely on hot melt adhesive, which melts when heated and solidifies quickly when cooled. This technology requires strict adjustment of the temperature regime and pressing of the glued components with the help of a set force. If you do not think about it, the system may lose stability, and the cladding may fall off.

Edge banding machine design

A table made of textolite or similar material is placed on the bed, which does not allow damage to the workpiece. A base module is mounted on the table, behind which a milling module can be placed to eliminate overhangs. The advantage of such equipment is its mobility, since the dimensions allow you to move the machine to the location of the part. There are also interchangeable guides, as in the photo of edge banders on our website, to work with hard strip facing.

The feeding system includes roll, guillotine and rollers. To begin with, a lining material is installed in the store, from which the tape is pulled by rollers into the gluing area. To adjust the belt feed speed, the roller drive must have an adjustable speed. The guillotine cuts the tape so that it is long enough to cover the entire edge and 25 millimeters for the allowance. The guillotine drive can be mechanical or pneumatic. Using a workpiece position sensor, the moment of operation of the guillotine is determined.

The machine is often equipped with a system for heating and applying glue. This is done in two different versions - so that the edging material is supplied with and without a layer of glue. In the first option, the adhesive is already contained on the tape, but it is heated with hot air using an industrial hair dryer. In the second case, the glue is heated in a special bath and applied to the surface of the tape using a drive roller. It is worth noting that some models have two rollers, of which the second is designed to apply adhesive to the edge of the workpiece.

The next element is the glue bath, where the glue for the edgebander is heated to a temperature of 150-200 degrees Celsius, does not stick, has a uniform consistency and circulates well. Teflon-coated baths and temperature sensors are predominantly used. Some models have a special cartridge for applying glue to the surface.

The clamping system has the form of a support roller. When the tape comes into contact with the facing material, there is a certain compressive force on these components. If the edgebander has a motorized feed, the tape is pressed against the edge of the part by one or more rollers that are arranged in series. In equipment with a manual part feed, this function can be performed by a person who feeds the part and at the same time presses it against the outgoing tape.

One or two or three rollers are used as a support. But this method requires good skills. In addition to the uniform mode, the feed speed of the workpiece and the tape is constantly adjusted to avoid tearing or bunching of the tape. More sophisticated equipment allows you to control the machine automatically, using electronics.

For gluing, a tape is used, the width of which is 2-5 millimeters greater than the height of the part. This is done to ensure that the edge is closed. As a rule, after gluing, so-called overhangs remain, which protrude from both sides. To remove them, a milling module is used, which cuts off all the facing that extends beyond the part.

Usually the tool is endowed with a high-speed drive with 10-12 thousand revolutions per minute to leave the surface unharmed. The module also provides limiting rollers for competent installation of the workpiece. The module is endowed with two cutters with individual drives, it is adjusted to the desired height of the part. To fine-tune the module and fix it, a movement mechanism with a special “screw-nut” gear is activated.

After cutting with a guillotine, the tape with an allowance is glued to the edge. To remove it, you must use a trimming module, the design of which can be very different. The simplest option is a circular saw, which is endowed with vertical movement and equipped with a low power drive.

On a special command, this saw enters the working area of the edging machine and saws off the excess part of the cladding. This principle can only work on machines with a manual feed of the part. If the feed is mechanized, the end module is more complex. The powered saw is mounted according to the instructions of the edge bander on a carriage that has two short strokes: the first to feed the saw to eliminate the tape allowance, and the second to evenly feed the workpiece and saw.

The edgebander can be supplemented with many functional details that affect its productivity, automate some processes, and also prepare and bring the edge to perfection. Modules can be sharpened to a certain size, type of facing material or type of workpiece. Reliable design provides high-quality pasting of straight and radius furniture blanks.

Working principle of edge banding machine

Edge banding devices with manual feed are used not only at home or in craft workshops. Even large furniture companies have this device for quick repair and facing exclusive or curved workpieces, small batches of parts.

Due to the presence of processors, controllers and control systems, devices with manual part feed are very convenient and easy to prepare and manage. The main processes during operation are the feed rate, automatic control temperature, as well as the length of the glued material.

The manual feed edgebander works with material up to 3 millimeters, consumes approximately 2 kW of electricity, covers an area of up to 2-3 square meters, is operated by one person and maintains a part feed speed of 3-6 meters per minute. In order for all machine systems to function, a 0.6 MPa compressed air supply system is connected.

Usually, the edge banding machine is first tested, and the reliability of the glue line and the degree of adhesion of the glue are controlled. To carry out the test, a transparent PVC film can be used, which allows you to observe the distribution of the adhesive after compression and polymerization. When the work shift changes, it is also recommended to carry out tests to prevent the occurrence of a latent violation.

All cutting tools are well sharpened. This applies to guillotine knives and cutters. Do not forget to regularly clean the glue bath. The edge banding machine can be equipped with a fence and have markings for heated surfaces. The machine bed must be grounded. The device must be connected to an aspiration system, as the heated adhesive may release toxic substances that pose a health hazard.

Such a device does not require any configuration. It is necessary to adjust the heating temperature of the adhesive and the tape, correctly set the rotational speed of the rollers that apply the adhesive, as well as the feed rate. It is very important that when applied to the edge or tape, the amount of adhesive is optimally suited to all conditions. If it is not enough, the strength of the bond between the material and the workpiece may be lost. Excess glue will cause excess amount to be squeezed out onto the surface and dirt will appear.

What does the work cycle look like? The workpiece moves along the edge banding machine. The carriage with the saw begins to move at the feed rate in the same direction. For a short time, the saw becomes stationary and cuts off the excess part of the tape. To prevent the machine from damaging the part during operation, there is a restrictive roller. To clean sawing waste, a branch of the suction system is connected to the trimming module.

Classification of edge banding machines

Edging machines are divided into the following types: machines for curved edges and for straight edges. In the design of straight edge banding machines, as a rule, automatic material feeding is used, in edge banding machines for curved edges, manual material feeding is used. Manual edge banders are not intended for large factories. There are combined machines that can operate in different modes and provide for both manual and automatic feed of the workpiece.

Edge banding machines are single and double sided. The first of them have a high cost and pay off only in the conditions of large and medium-sized industries. These machines can only cover rectangular edges, but they have many features that are not available on positional machines.

These are mainly operations that are associated with the elimination of defects and giving products a finished look. Double-sided edgebanding machines are identical in functionality to the previous type, however, they are able to edgeband simultaneously on both sides due to more complex mechanics.

Recently, portable machines have appeared that have a special bath for heating the glue to an acceptable temperature. It is endowed with several handles and a roller for rolling the lining to the edge. With this use, the cladding is installed on a specially prepared support. Portable devices can be used for gluing plastic with a small thickness on rectangular parts. They can also be fixed on the table or work as stationary devices.

Manufacturing of an edge banding machine

because of high price edge banding machine, many prefer homemade edge devices, but they have lame safety precautions, so you should be very careful. Before thinking about the creation of a machine, it is necessary to pay attention to the thickness of the material with which the equipment will work, to think about what material it will work with, and what devices should be mandatory. First you need to prepare the base, which includes a system for supplying the facing material, pressing, heating and applying glue.

AT standard equipment facing machine includes:

  • knot of automatic cutting of an edge;
  • rotation regulator with feed rate indicator;
  • thermostat with support for the standby function and protection against premature operation;
  • node for feeding the edge into the area of gluing;
  • switch for working with straight parts;
  • hair dryer bracket;
  • textolite wear-resistant guides.

Edge banding machines are used in almost all woodworking enterprises, however, their design and structural elements can vary significantly. It depends mainly on the amount of work that is performed using this unit. Therefore, it is customary to use mobile devices in small workshops, which are intended for applying edging material with an adhesive composition that has already been applied to it.

Most small businesses and households prefer to use edgebanders for edgebanding, which include only a device for unwinding and fixing the edge material, a heat gun and an incandescent roller. This apparatus is made in the form of a desktop machine with a device for moving the workpiece along it. You mount the machine on the workpiece, or to be more precise, on its edge, after which you gradually advance the homemade edgebander as the work progresses.

For more advanced and complex models of edge banding machines, a tank is provided that is designed to heat the glue and apply this composition to the edge. The tank is equipped with handles and a roller that rolls the material to the edge, which in this machine is located on a special separate support. These devices are intended for gluing plastic of increased thickness to rectangular blanks.

Overhangs of edging material, which are formed during cladding with home-made edge banding machines, are usually removed manually using special devices. These include various longitudinal guillotine devices that cut off the overhang and form chamfers on the edges of the product. All structural elements are fastened with comfortable handles for control.

After that, we can confidently say that the do-it-yourself edge banding machine is ready. It is worth remembering that when working on such a device, it is necessary to use facing material in rolls on which the adhesive composition has already been applied, otherwise you simply cannot attach anything. Since you will still need some parts to make an edge bander with your own hands, do not expect that the production of the device will cost you completely free.

Care of the edgebander

The edge banding machine, like any other equipment, needs the strictest safety precautions and careful maintenance, the neglect of which is guaranteed to reduce the life of air reducers, cuffs of cylinders and pneumatic valves. The rules for care are as follows:

  1. Always keep an eye on cables and safety devices in case of damage that protect you and your machine. The fact is that a damaged cable can disrupt the operation of electrical units, and this will require urgent repairs.
  2. Try to exclude the imbalance of the supply voltage in phases. When using the machine, there is a risk of voltage fluctuations, therefore, to eliminate this problem, it is necessary to install stabilizers and filters.
  3. Keep away from dust, water or oil. Many people prefer to clean their own edgebander with compressed air, but we recommend not to do this, because under high pressure foreign bodies can penetrate into protected places. Instead, use brushes instead.
  4. After work, clean the workplace and the machine. It is necessary to regularly lubricate the components and parts. Try to use a quality lubricant that has been proven in action.
  5. Do not lower the pressure beam from above with strong pressure. Do this carefully so that the workpiece fits exactly on the worktable. If you neglect this rule, the upper pinch rollers and soft detents will quickly wear out, the motor will be overloaded, and the transport chain will stretch.
  6. Monitor the condition of all pneumatic cylinders and gearboxes, as they can disrupt the nodes that are responsible for processing parts.
  7. Accurately set the heating temperature and correctly choose the adhesive composition. If you use poor-quality glue, the glue station will become dirty, which will lead to the replacement of consumables.
  8. When replacing spare parts, always give preference to originals.
  9. Before starting work, carefully study the technology of the edge banding machine in order to properly operate the device.
  10. If you notice violations in the operation of the machine, but cannot figure it out on your own, it is better to consult with professionals.
  11. Don't neglect your edgebander maintenance time.

Thus, edge cladding technology is becoming more advanced every year. professional level in connection with the advent of improved facing materials and the improvement of the production process. Today it is difficult to imagine any furniture production without a good edge banding machine, which is very simple in its design, but it is enough expensive equipment. It is for these reasons that many people take up their manufacture on their own.

Making an edge banding machine with your own hands

Edge banding of furniture parts is an important stage in its production. Quality edges help protect the material, whether wood or plywood, from various negative impact and also give it a beautiful and finished look.

Any normal furniture manufacturing business is required to have edge banding equipment. For this, there is a special unit, which is called the edge banding machine.

If you have your own small production or you are just a lone craftsman who makes various wood products, then you do not have to spend money and buy such a device. It is relatively easy to make and do it yourself with a little time and effort. A home-made edge banding machine will perform its task no worse than a factory unit, but it will cost the owner much cheaper.

The principle of operation of the edge banding machine and some device options

This device is widely used both in private workshops and on an industrial scale. As a working material for decorating wooden products, you can use:

The typical width of the lining is approximately 2-5 centimeters, and the thickness can vary between 0.4-3 millimeters.

The essence of the operation of the device is that a facing material is passed through it, on which glue is applied using special rollers. It is important to choose a normal temperature at which the glue setting will be of the highest quality.

Of course, if we are talking about how to make an edgebander with your own hands, then it is unlikely to have some advanced functions of a factory product, for example, heating the glue. Although it is quite easy to organize even this mechanism - it just takes a little more patience and time.

As for the varieties of the device in question, the following options are distinguished:

  • For working with curved edges. Usually, manual feeding of the material is used here, since the master needs to adjust in time to the next bend on the part and it’s definitely not possible to rush for an automatic tape.
  • For straight line processing. Such products, as a rule, have an automatic feed. They are most often used in the mass production of furniture or other things made of wood.

Typical design

In order for the manufacture of an edge trimmer with your own hands to be successful, you need to familiarize yourself with the typical design of such a unit.

The lining feeding system consists of a roll, a guillotine and special rollers. There is also a special store where the beginning of the tape is fed. It is pulled by rollers to the very part that needs to be processed, along the way being covered with a layer of suitable glue, heated to desired temperature.

The mentioned rollers must have an adjustable speed, only in this way it is possible to organize the optimal feed speed of the tape. A guillotine is needed in order to cut the material to the desired length. Cropping occurs both automatically and manually, depending on the type of device and its tasks. Trimming is adjusted so that approximately 25-30 millimeters of allowance remains.

There are some types of facing materials that immediately come with glue already applied to them. In this case, it is enough to warm them up before use. If this is not the case, then the glue is contained separately in a special tray. Its temperature takes typical values of 150-200 degrees Celsius.

Clamp between wooden detail and facing is carried out by a special support roller, although there may be several of them. Making a homemade edge banding machine, you can completely get by with one such element, adding the necessary effort with your physical strength.

How to make the device yourself

Since the units in question have a rather high cost on the market, many craftsmen are willing to spend some time making them with their own hands. In principle, this option will also be quite enough for normal operation, but here you will have to pay more attention to safety and use the device very carefully.

First, you need to acquire the necessary components. The standard package includes:

  1. Node for automatic trimming of the cladding.
  2. The speed control unit for the rotation of the tape feed rollers is good if it is equipped with a special indicator.
  3. A place to heat the glue, some kind of thermostat.
  4. Adhesive tape supply unit.
  5. Guides that will help to fix the workpiece normally.

If you have stocked up with everything you need, then you can start assembling. Of course, nothing prevents you from slightly deviating from the accepted configuration and adding some of your own additional unit, which will help make the device more convenient and functional.

It is very difficult to give any specific assembly advice, because it is impossible to predict what parts a person will be able to find and how he will dispose of them. The main thing to do is to look at a typical unit device diagram and connect the indicated components in the correct order. First, filling the material for cladding, then broaching it with glue, further delivery to a wooden product and a sticker.

As a conclusion, it is worth noting that making an edge banding machine with your own hands will be within the power of any person who has experience working with mechanisms, elementary electronics and tools. A little imagination - and you get what you want.

Attention, only TODAY!

An edging machine for chipboard, the price of which starts at 20 thousand rubles, is widely used in the manufacture of furniture. When chipboard is sawn, it is required to edge parts. Therefore, not a single furniture workshop can do without an edging machine.

Using a factory, homemade, automatic or manual unit, the edge knot performs two main functions.

  • Gives furniture blanks an attractive appearance. Closing all sections of chipboard, products acquire the desired aesthetics.
  • Protects against moisture, swelling, premature wear. Chipboard slices overlap, preventing the penetration of moisture into the furniture, which can accelerate the process of product wear.

The better the edge unit works, the more durable and attractive it will be possible to make furniture. Therefore, the main task of the owner of the furniture shop is to choose a good unit. If it's about home production, can be assembled by hand homemade unit for furniture assembly. This issue requires more radical decisions than buying a factory machine, but it may well justify itself.

Devices that process glass and chipboard edges are similar in many ways. Glass is widely used in furniture production. Therefore, it is not uncommon for workshops to be equipped with devices that allow making glass of the desired shape, processing its edges and gluing it to furniture facades.

Kinds

Edging machines are divided into several types.

  1. Simple machines. In addition to applying edging material, they have no other functions. Good decision for manual work with your own hands at home in the manufacture of furniture.
  2. Devices of medium complexity that are able to hem, cut overhangs and adjust the thickness of the edges.
  3. Professional. It is impossible to assemble such devices with your own hands. At the same time, professional machines first align the edges, remove a small layer of material to prevent the formation of chips, after which glue is applied and the edges are glued. Also, a professional machine cuts overhangs, end parts, polishes joints.

Some models are able to process edges on both sides of the product at the same time. Automatic machines work on 4 sides in one go. But such equipment is relevant only for factory use.

Depending on the feed, the machines are divided into 2 categories:

  • With manual feed. This is a curved machine that allows you to perform quite complex work;
  • FROM automatic feeding. They are only capable of processing straight edges.

Automatic feed machines

They should be considered separately, since this equipment is the most common, widely used in furniture production.

The design includes several basic elements of the machine with automatic feed:

  • Bed with work table;
  • Feed system;
  • Glue application system;
  • clamps;
  • Milling, trimming and polishing units.

Bed and work table

  • The base of the machine is usually made of metal. But if you want to make a home-made unit by assembling it with your own hands, you can use other designs for the bed;
  • On the bed is a desktop;
  • The desktop is made of textolite. This material has a low coefficient of friction, practically does not wear out during operation;
  • Due to the use of textolite, the desktop provides easy sliding of workpieces on its surface, it is not scratched;
  • The table serves as a place to accommodate the main working unit and auxiliary systems.

Feeding system

The delivery system includes:

  • Shop where the roll of the performed edges is installed;
  • Feed rollers. The operator adjusts the speed of the roller with his own hands, which allows you to set the optimal speed for feeding the edge to the furniture blank;
  • Guillotine made of steel. This element of the machine provides edge trimming;
  • Guillotines are equipped with mechanical or pneumatic drives;
  • Pruning is carried out with a small margin;
  • The cutter can be scissors or a knife;
  • Scissors cut thin edges up to 1 mm thick;
  • The knife is designed to work with thick edges up to 3 mm.

Glue application system

  1. Edge bands can be with or without a layer of adhesive already applied.
  2. If it is a tape with glue, then the glue is heated by an industrial hair dryer. After heating, the glue melts, which allows you to glue the edge to the piece of furniture.
  3. If the edge glue is not provided, then the machine is equipped with a glue tray made of Teflon-coated material. The heater heats the bath to a temperature of 150 to 200 degrees. At the same time, the bath necessarily provides continuous circulation so that the glue remains homogeneous. When the heating element reaches the desired temperature, the sensor is activated. Such machines can have 1 or 2 rollers for applying glue. The first one applies glue to the edge, and the second one - to the blank of future furniture.

Clamps

  • When the heating element and glue complete their work, the glued tape should be pressed. For this, a special press group or simply clamps are used;
  • If you just stick the tape with your own hands, it will quickly peel off. Clamps provide the desired quality of edge finishing;
  • The mold consists of special support rollers;
  • If this is an automatic machine, then it has one main pressure roller and a couple more auxiliary ones, which are called boosters;
  • The manual unit provides for the need to press with your own hands;
  • The disadvantage of manual work is that the result is not of the same quality and evenness as that of an automatic one.

Knots

When planning to make a home-made unit or purchase factory model type KM 40, pay attention to the three nodes of the machine.

  1. Milling. It cuts the overhangs of the tape that extend beyond the product. When gluing the edges are used longer by 2-5 mm. These overlaps are called overhangs. Milling units are equipped with cutters, each of which has its own electric drive.
  2. Trimming. Since the edges are cut to length with a margin, these excesses should be removed. These functions are performed by the trimming unit. It is presented in the form of a circular saw, working on high frequency rotation to obtain a high-quality, accurate cut.
  3. Polishing. This node is not present on all machines. Equipping a homemade unit with a polishing unit is the dream of many craftsmen. Polishing gives the workpiece a finished, attractive appearance. Also, the node is able to polish the glass, remove excess glue from the surface.

KM 40

Consider separately the popular edging unit, which is called KM 40.

Model KM 40 has several features:

  • Processes small and large curvilinear workpieces;
  • Can be placed permanently and moved to perform work on the road to the customer;
  • KM 40 allows you to adjust the temperature of the glue bath. The electronic panel on the KM 40 is used to select the desired temperature in the range from 120 to 220 degrees;
  • KM 40 is equipped with an edge thickness setting unit. The adjustment range is 0.3-3 mm;
  • KM has the function of adjusting the thickness of the applied adhesive layer;
