Gates that do not open with leaves, but slowly disappear from our eyes, “driving away” along the walls of the garage, are convenient because they do not interfere, are not bulky, and do not take up space. The owner of such a device does not need to think about where it will be placed when opening, when a garage is being built, there is no option for “difficulties in winter due to snow.” When opening such an entrance, only the lower part of the gate door near the garage ceiling is visible. Overhead gates are very secure because they are essentially a single piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to break into. If you galvanize them, they will also be very resistant to corrosion. The door will reliably protect against thieves, keep heat inside the building and will become very convenient and easy to use, but buying it is very expensive. Much cheaper and more interesting to do Do-it-yourself lifting garage doors.

Important! Before making such gates, you need to understand that they also have disadvantages:
All you need is a rectangular opening for the entrance to the garage; an arch will not work, except for decorative purposes.
You must first open the gate, and then drive close to the garage (you need about one and a half meters of space). When the gate is open, the height of the garage decreases by 15-20 cm.

Overhead gates are very secure because they are essentially a single piece of wood or metal and are very difficult to break into.

A model with sections is a canvas made up of blocks of wood, plastic, or steel, about 1.5 m in size. When this door is lifted, the blocks are “pulled” upward and then returned back the same way. Inside wooden canvas will be filled with polyurethane foam, which will not let the cold into the garage in winter. The panels are connected by hinge-type hinges, the moving parts consist of steel or plastic (steel is better, they will last longer), and the guide skids are resistant to destruction and rust due to their composition.
Unfortunately, such a door is almost impossible to make yourself, and breaking it is quite simple. You can buy a ready-made prefabricated kit and install the door to get its main advantage - simplicity and ease for the owner.

Lift-and-pivot doors - during movement, the doors “drive” under the roof using the action of hinges and levers. Such a door is very reliable and it is very difficult for an attacker to break it in order to rob a garage. They are also quiet during lifting, because they do not use “moving” elements: guides and rollers, and while using them, it is quite difficult to pinch your finger. This is an expensive choice, about 60 thousand rubles. for the object and 15 thousand for installation.

Important! Gates can also be without automation, manually operated or automatic with an electric drive. Naturally, the former are cheaper. The cost will be from 14 to 75 thousand rubles. From 7 to 15 thousand they pay for installation. You can buy the parts separately, but is it worth the hassle? It’s easier to purchase an installation kit so that you can assemble and install it later. Each type of door comes with detailed description step-by-step assembly.

Lift-and-pivot doors - during movement, the doors “drive” under the roof using the action of hinges and levers

This type of door includes a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door. Steel or wooden frame mounted in the opening, profiles directly for the canvas must be placed in the box. It is made from wooden planks, sandwich panels, it should be covered with metal. Door made from whole piece wood, a very expensive pleasure, the choice is simpler - boards impregnated chemical composition, which will protect from the weather and covered with metal, painted in any color. You can cover the tree with pieces of pressed foam or other insulating material.

Before you start making gates, you need to study available methods rise.

  • Method when using hinges and levers. The simple design promises reliability, but you need to very successfully install the guide profiles and carefully adjust the spring tension. The profiles should be placed parallel and evenly.
  • Counterweight method. The cable is attached downwards at the corners of the frame, passed through a block, led to the winch pulley, and at its end there is a counterweight. Its mass will be commensurate with the weight of the gate. This option means that the frame and frame will be subject to considerable load; it is recommended to choose such a mechanism exclusively for huge gates. Next step: gate design. We measure the opening and draw a sketch (we look for drawings on the Internet).

Important You will need the following parts: a metal rod for the voltage regulator, diameter 8 mm; corner for rail section – 40 x 40 x 4 mm, for frame – 3.5x3.5x0.4 cm; wooden blocks with a section of 12 by 8 and ceiling 10 by 10; channel bracket 8 x 4.3 x 0.5 cm; metal pins; spring diameter 3 cm.

The box is assembled from wooden blocks, their ends are connected by steel plates or corners, and the bottom goes 2 cm deep into the floor, then we fix it into the opening with steel pins.

This type of door includes a frame, a lifting leaf and a mechanism that opens the door.

The frame is made like this: take a thick corner, its parameters are directly dependent on the panel fabric, with 25, take the 75th, with 50, the 100th corner. Next, we measure the garage and prepare the opening for attaching the frame, you need to make sure that its surfaces are smooth and even, if this is not the case, we take the grinder in our hands and work. Next, we look for a workspace for the welding process. We will have 2 channels lying on the welding site, their parameters are 20 cm smaller than the frame. We cut the corners to length at both ends, making sure that they fit tightly. We weld them together, make cuts and use four (five) electrodes, create a frame, but do not weld them very tightly. We apply it to the opening and control the density; if it is not there, then we adjust what happened and weld it again, then we clean the seams. We do the same with the second part of the frame, then do the same on the second wall, the frame should be made double - internal and external, install it.

A support for the channel bracket is made from the corner, a hole is made in one shelf to secure it to the racks, and 3 holes are made in the other to secure the spring bracket. We secure the bracket by drilling 3 holes in one of the shelves. Next, we make an adjustment plate from an iron strip and use it to connect the spring and bracket. We bend the last turns of the spring with hooks, attaching a tension regulator from a rod to the bottom. We create a hinge corner for the lower part from the corner, drill a hole of 8.5 mm and weld it to the frame, retreating from the lower edge to the central part of the hole. Thus, we prepare for the manufacture of a lever for lifting on a 12-cm hinge. Next, we weld to its end and attach a plate for the voltage regulator.

We will need two corners for the gate to move. We take two corners, butt them together and connect them along the edge so that the distance between the tops is at least 5 cm. We weld the rail to the plate with holes, leaving 8 cm between the lower edge of the cross member and the axis of the guide. Weld a piece of channel with an indentation of 12-15 to the second end of the rail cm. Next, we attach it to the ceiling beam. You can install additional protection devices if desired, as well as rubber edging and linings, they will make the structure more stable and will give stability to the structure.

Garage Doors

It is advised to pour concrete into a trench along the length of the stroke between the side posts, press the channel parallel to the ground, and when it hardens, weld both frames.

Installation of the canvas

We measure the diagonal, taking into account the dimensions, attach it by welding, all kinds of gaps are eliminated, we clean the seams and install the canvas. We attach the brackets and guides, their horizontal must be made ideal, then: we insulate the canvas, fasten a metal sheet, we clean the seams and degrease them. We adjust the springs and secure the internal fittings. The entire celebration of work and construction will take two to three days.

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room. They can be electric or manual. The first option is convenient; just press a button or remote control and you’re done. But manual drive It breaks less often, and it’s easier to make a shield for it. Required Parts impossible to make at home. Parts cannot be purchased on the market; it is better to buy a factory kit.

The garage doorway should be measured and assessed whether a standard door leaf will fit, and also check that the side parts and the top and bottom of the opening are in the same plane. To the heights doorway add 50 cm (if the gate is with a drive - 100 cm), this is the length of the garage required for the gate to rest on its ceiling.

The option is complicated, but they are airtight and better protect the room

Sectional doors consist of a door leaf, locks, a movement mechanism, a spring balancing mechanism and guide modules. Tires are attached to the edges of the opening, which are driven under the ceiling, and the gate moves along them. It is better to buy polymer sections; they are practically resistant to corrosion, do not create noise, and can withstand temperatures of -50 – +60.

Installation diagram

Create markings to secure the frame and constituent elements. Assemble a frame structure (not much different from a similar algorithm for overhead gates). Everything is standard: we install the frame, bolt the guides to the ceiling, but there is no need to drill holes or make other structures to hold it suspended. We assemble the canvas, starting from the bottom, and equip the panel elements with rollers. We protect the structure with casings. We check - if everything is done correctly, the canvas will not move on its own, hovering at the level at which it was installed.

It’s worth saying in conclusion - homemade sectional doors must be safe. The bet is your own car, or even your life. You should be extremely careful about the installation rules, adhere to safety precautions and pay a small amount to a specialist who will check the quality of the door installation after the owner’s efforts.

Do-it-yourself lifting gates

Most men are crazy about their car and are ready to spend a lot of time in the garage. But in order to build a permanent garage and decorate it the way you want, you need to invest a lot of money. Fortunately, you can master the subtleties self-made some elements of the structure, for example, garage doors.

All the nuances associated with their manufacture, installation and care will be discussed in our article.

Kinds

The following garage door options are available:

  • swing;
  • sliding;
  • lift-and-turn (folding);
  • lifting-sectional (folding);
  • recoil;
  • roller shutters (roller shutters or roller shutters).

Now we will consider in detail the design features of each type, their functioning patterns, advantages and disadvantages. We’ll also tell you what material to choose to make garage doors yourself (wood, galvanized iron or corrugated sheets), how to strengthen the doors and how to paint them.

Design Features

To make reliable and high-quality gates with your own hands, you need to take into account the basic nuances of the structure of each type.

Swing

Swinging garage doors are the most common option, known since ancient times for their reliability and convenience.

Design principle is extremely simple - swing gates consist of two leaves, based on metal carcass. They can be wooden, iron, made of corrugated board. Closes to the outside and internal locks and bolts. For additional comfort, you can cut a gate in one of the doors.

Main advantages: cost-effectiveness, ease of manufacture, high degree of safety. Disadvantages: they require free space in front of the garage for full opening.

Sliding

If you connect a drive to swing gates, they can be automated and turned into sliding gates.

Lift-and-swivel (folding)

Modern, neat and compact version, more suitable for insulated garages located on the territory of guarded cooperatives. The basis of the design is a door made of galvanized steel or aluminum, which rises up and is secured parallel to the floor using a hinged lever drive, special guides and a lock.

Main advantages: space saving, ease of operation. Disadvantages: high cost, low level protection, manufacturing complexity.

Lifting-sectional (folding)

A very convenient type of gate that provides high tightness and does not take up much space. Schematic diagram is based on the refraction of a metal leaf, consisting of horizontal sections, during the process of opening and placing it under the ceiling.

The functioning of the mechanism is carried out due to hinges connecting the segments and rollers moving along guide bars. Folding gates have good sound insulation, since each section is reinforced with a seal.

Main advantages: versatility. Flaws: high price, low burglary resistance.

Recoil

A relatively inexpensive, effective and easy-to-use option. The design works on the principle of a wardrobe and consists of one metal door, moving along the garage wall using a system of guides and rollers. Sliding gates can be installed both outside and inside the garage.

Main advantages: low cost, strength, durability. Disadvantages: the garage requires a wide facade.

Roller (roller shutter)

A rare type of lightweight gate. Roller shutters are best used in guarded cooperatives. Their mechanism of action resembles roller shutters and consists of aluminum plates that are assembled into a special block fixed at the top.

Main advantages: space saving, ease of operation. Disadvantages: fragility and unreliability.

Having studied the design features various types, we can conclude that the easiest way to manufacture and install swing garage doors. Their production does not require complex drawings, professional skills or the use of specialized tools.

Read below on how to do it yourself correctly.

Manufacturing

Smooth installation and easy operation of the gate directly depend on strict adherence to manufacturing technology. We present to your attention a universal step by step guide on production swing gates for the garage.

Purchase of necessary materials and tools

For work we will need:

  1. roulette;
  2. square;
  3. level (both construction and hydraulic can be used);
  4. Bulgarian;
  5. welding machine.

During the work the following will be used:

  1. corners for assembling the mounting frame (it is better to give preference to corners made of steel 65x65 or 40x40 mm);
  2. cladding for sashes (most often wood, corrugated sheets or solid metal sheets are used);
  3. a set of external and internal locks (latches or deadbolts at your discretion);
  4. profile (for example, size 60x30 mm);
  5. hinged iron hinges for fastening doors.

Measuring the opening and creating a drawing

To make reliable and neat gates without cracks and all kinds of irregularities, you need to carefully measure the opening and then transfer the obtained data to the drawing.

Algorithm for measuring the garage opening:

  1. We measure the width. As a rule, this figure varies from 3 to 5 meters, depending on the size of the vehicle. Ideally, the distance from the machine to the frame frame should not be less than 30 cm on both sides.
  2. We measure the height. This size is also taken taking into account the parameters of the car.

We transfer the obtained figures onto paper and indicate the materials. The drawing can be arbitrary, the main thing is its accuracy.

Mounting frame

Swing gates consist of 3 basic elements: frame frame (sheathing), doors (leaves) and hinges.

The first step is to prepare the parts and weld the sheathing, following the technological order:

  1. We take the prepared corner and cut it into several equal parts. The first half should be proportional to the width of the garage door, the second half should correspond to their height.
  2. We lay out the resulting segments on a flat surface at right angles, carefully checking the degrees with a tape measure.
  3. Now we need to weld the sheathing from the finished parts.

Frame frame

Work at this stage should be carried out with special attention, because the tightness of the gate and the ease of its operation depend on it.

The manufacture of a door frame includes the following points:

  1. We take the edge of the profile pipe and divide it into 4 pieces with a length that differs from the height of the sheathing by 20 mm, and another 4, the size of which is calculated using the formula: sheathing width/2 - 35 mm. All these calculations are made in order to ensure the ease of entry of future doors into the opening.
  2. We lay out the parts on a smooth, straight surface at 90-degree angles, checking them with a square.
  3. We weld the sections together and get a finished frame.

Sheathing

Sheathing is also one of the the most important stages work, since the literacy and accuracy of its implementation depends appearance and functionality of the design. How to trim doors correctly?

We present to your attention a detailed guide:

  1. We take pre-purchased material. For example, a solid sheet of iron.
  2. Cut it to size. Moreover, the lining of the left sash should overlap the right sash by 2 cm.
  3. We weld the canvases to the frame, first in the center and along the edges to fix them, and then along the entire perimeter.

Installation of hinges

Before starting work, we purchased hanging iron hinges to secure the doors. Now is the time to install them.

This is done very easily:

  1. First you need to weld the lower hinge element to the frame frame, and the upper one to the outside of the sash.
  2. We strengthen the connection by applying a bent metal strip to the top of the loop and weld it to inside reinforcement liner.

Constipations and stopper

Choice and correct installation a secure lock guarantees the safety of your car. Therefore, we must approach this stage with all responsibility.

Garages are usually locked from the outside with a mortise or padlock, and from the inside with a pin lock.

Installing a mortise lock is not difficult, but We’ll look at how to install the stopper in more detail.:

  1. First, we drive a piece of pipe into the ground - the movable part of the stopper will fit into it.
  2. We use a reinforcing pin as a moving part. It must be threaded through the hinge of the gate leaf.
  3. In order for the structure to function successfully, it is necessary to constantly monitor the cleanliness of the pipe.

Painting

Before the final installation of garage doors, the doors need to be painted in order to protect the metal from corrosion and improve the overall aesthetic qualities. After preliminary priming, frost-resistant metal paint or enamel is applied to the doors in 2-3 layers.

Insulation

At the end of the gate manufacturing process, it is necessary to perform internal insulation, otherwise at least 50 percent of the heat will escape from the room. And, you see, warm garages are much more comfortable. Foam plastic, expanded polystyrene or glass wool are usually used for insulation. Thermal insulation material It is attached to the inside of the doors and closed on top with clapboard or wooden planks.

So, we examined in detail the main stages of self-manufacturing swing garage doors. All that remains is to figure out the issues of their installation: how to raise the frame, hang the doors, secure the structure and install a drive for its automation.

Installation

Once you have completed the manufacture of all elements of the gate structure, you can begin installing them.

The installation algorithm is also quite simple:

  1. First you need to install the frame frames. They are attached to the slopes of the garage opening using long metal pins(15-20 cm).
  2. We cut off the excess pins protruding from the outside, sand them and mask them with paint so that in the future they do not interfere with closing the doors.
  3. Now you need to connect the inner and outer sheathings using iron jumper plates.
  4. All that remains is to hang the sashes on the hinges and evaluate the finished work.

For greater ease of use, swing gates can be equipped with a special drive powered by electricity - this will make them automatic. The operation scheme of such a device is based on the use of profile guides driven by an electric motor.

Folding and lifting rolling gates You can also install it yourself if you have ready-made opening and closing mechanisms (sashes, sliding parts, strips, rollers and clamps), which are sold in hardware stores. All you need to do is fabricate the frame and assemble the structure according to the included instructions, and seal it.

For installation sliding gates You don't even need a frame. All you need to do is make it out of corrugated sheets and seal the large sash. If desired, you can cut a gate in it. Installation comes down to the arrangement of the fittings according to the instructions.

To make everything work out as best as possible, let’s take into account the opinions of professionals:

  • You shouldn’t limit yourself to reading a couple of articles with instructions on making your own garage doors. Now on the Internet there are a lot of detailed video tutorials and reviews on this topic.
  • When choosing materials for work, give preference to lighter and more modern ones. Then further exploitation finished design will not be difficult and will not require effort.

Most car owners pay Special attention not only caring for your “iron pets,” but also arranging the garage in which they are stored.

Such men often like to make various useful things for their garage.

Garage doors are no exception in this regard. There are many different types of this product, however, the most convenient and practical from the point of view of self-production is swing type gate

At home, making such gates yourself will not be difficult; their design is quite simple. The main thing to understand is that in this process preparatory stage plays a decisive role.

At the stage of preparation for the start of work, you will need to carefully consider each working stage, measure everything required places and make up the most detailed drawing future swing garage doors.

We carry out quality measurements

To start with, use measuring instruments such as roulette, building level and meter measure the garage entrance opening. If you don’t yet have a garage, and you are designing it from the very beginning, consider optimal size not only for the entire building, but also for future swing gates.

It is important to consider that all components of the garage have their own standards by which it is built. Based on this, the entrance opening must meet certain requirements, the most common today are the following standard parameters:

  • The width of the opening should be sufficient for the average passenger car. According to generally accepted standards, the gap between the car and the edge of the garage opening should be at least 30 cm. It is best, if possible, to make this distance a little larger, expanding the entrance space in case of purchasing a larger car.
  • The height of the entrance hole must be at least two meters.
  • The size of the garage opening should be determined taking into account a few centimeters for the frame. In general, the optimal size for it is considered to be the following parameters: width - from 2.5 to 5.5; in height - from 2.1 to 2.4 meters.

Considering these numbers, you can prepare the most practical sizes that will make it possible in the future not to encounter additional problems. Having measured the size of the entrance opening, think about the parameters of the future design.

Typically, such gates are installed on the basis of a frame, so keep in mind that the frame of the swing garage door leaves will be slightly smaller in size, unlike the frame.

For the gate shutters to move freely and smoothly, the gap between their frame part and the frame must be at least 10 mm; it is better if the gap is 20 mm in the area of the upper and lower edges.

Having taken measurements, you can begin to select the required amount of materials of the required size. The frame for the garage opening, which will be mounted in the entrance space, is best made from a steel angle; in a rectangular section it should be at least 6 cm, the optimal size is 6x4 cm.

And to form the valves, prepare strong iron profiles with a thickness of at least 5 cm in cross section. To make a covering for swing gates according to standards, it is recommended to use sheet metal thickness not less than 3 mm.

We draw up a detailed diagram of the future product

Having obtained all the necessary measurements and thought about the quantity and size of the material, it is time to draw up a detailed drawing. For this you can use ready-made drawings. You can also show your imagination and engineering abilities, if any, and draw a sketch for your personal project.

And if you have experience with graphic computer programs, you can design a garage door model in three-dimensional image. This way, you will have the most complete idea of the future product.

However, in this case you need to be especially careful and understand that for swing gates it is important to correctly calculate the strength of the supporting beams for the frame. the racks must be strong and withstand the load of sliding sashes.

In order for the structure to be built according to the rules and last for more than one year, it is better to use various options drawings and, based on them, create the most complete drawing of swing gates that suits your parameters. Also with practical point It is convenient to draw up separate sketches for the main parts of the future garage door.

So, start by drawing an image of the frame design for the garage opening. It should consist of four supporting metal beams or corners on which special fasteners (ears) are attached for installation.

These fastening elements are mounted in the opening, and the reliability of all garage doors depends on them. The most understandable and correct drawing frame is shown below.

Based on this diagram, you only need to substitute your measurements. After forming a sketch of the frame, proceed to general drawing. On large sheet“A3”, using a pencil, ruler and corner, draw a diagram in accordance with the numbers obtained after measurements.

Please note that the most complete diagram of swing gates should contain an image of the entire structure, and in the lower left part of the sheet the names of all parts, their parameters, and the sequence of actions should be indicated. The most informative drawing for example is shown below.

As you can see, based on the image, you can develop a plan for your future garage door with precision down to the smallest particles. You can immediately mark the places where handles, bolts and additional locks will be located.

Pay special attention to the gaps between the elements of the structure; they must comply with the standards. As a result, the finished garage door leaves should open smoothly, and the hinges should not emit any unpleasant squeaks.

Thus, taking into account all these points, you can draw up a complete diagram of swing gates with your own hands. The main thing is to take the most accurate measurements of the garage opening before creating a drawing, think through all stages of the work as fully as possible, formulate a draft diagram and decide on the right amount material.

Only after resolving all these issues can you begin to draw up a final version of the drawing.

The finished structure must be integral and take into account possible force effects during use, so pay special attention to the preparatory stage.

If problems arise in the process of forming a sketch drawing, look at additional information sources where you may find good advice. As a last resort, seek assistance from a competent engineer.

Overhead garage doors – the best way solving the problem of free space. But the problem is high cost factory models. Therefore, if you have the desire, tools and Supplies you can make them yourself. What is needed to make overhead gates to your garage with your own hands? The instructions and drawings will help solve this issue.

Analysis of manufacturing scheme

Unlike other options, it is not recommended to take a drawing of a factory model as a basis. In most cases, the canvas is lifted using complex system counterweights and guides. Do similar design Gates on your own will be problematic. But you can take some components from this drawing.

The lower part poses a particular problem. Making moving hinges and an adjustable lifting system will be difficult. The solution is to secure the lower part of the door leaf using a roller system. The frame will serve as guides. As a result, the circuit will be modernized to make the structure yourself.

Description of the operating principle of homemade overhead garage doors:

  • The upper rollers are mounted on L-shaped profile pipes. Movement occurs along horizontal guides made of a U-shaped profile.
  • Lifting is carried out using a counterweight. A hook is welded to the bottom of the gate, to which it is attached steel rope, leading to the video above. The mass of the counterweight depends on the weight of the sash and its height, and is determined experimentally.
  • Additionally, you can make a swing sash. To do this, stiffeners must be welded onto the gate frame.
  • The canvas is formed from aluminum or. It is advisable to make insulation from the inside.

This general description the principle of manufacturing and operation of the structure. Parts can be adapted to a specific opening and improve the functionality of overhead gates.

Required Supplies

Most often used for manufacturing available material. Rolled metal can be purchased at delivery points; old structures can be used after dismantling them. It is necessary to check the quality of the workpieces - the absence of mechanical deformation, rust or other defects.

For production you will need following materials and components:

  • The gate frame is made of angle or channel. Thickness – from 50 mm or more. It is necessary to take into account that a layer of insulation and internal lining will be installed.
  • The box must perform two functions - to fix the canvas and be a guide for the rollers. To do this, it is recommended to take a channel 30*50*30 cm.
  • Upper horizontal guides. They are also made from channel bars, but in smaller sizes. The width depends on the selected rollers.
  • Rollers. There are no special requirements for them; it is important that the surface is rubberized.
  • Square pipes. Necessary for the manufacture of additional structures.

The thickness of each component depends on the overall dimensions of the structure. The channel channel of the box must be at least 3 mm, the frame - from 1.5 mm. For installation you will need dowels; it is recommended to connect the elements of the lifting gates using welding. Mechanical fasteners will not provide adequate quality connections.

Sequence of work

After drawing up a drawing of the overhead garage doors, you need to select the right material and make blanks. dimensions take into account the thickness of the weld seam. The opening is being prepared - leveling the walls, checking horizontal, vertical and diagonal dimensions. Corrections are made to the drawing.

Work order:

  1. Installation of the box and upper horizontal guides. The latter are attached to the garage ceiling.
  2. The frame is made according to the dimensions obtained. It should not be 3-5 mm larger than the dimensions of the box. For a tight connection, you can later install a sheet on top of the structure.
  3. Installation of lower and upper rollers on the frame.
  4. Installation of the frame on the guides with preliminary fixation.
  5. Checking the functionality of the gate. They need to be opened and closed several times.
  6. Forming a web from steel sheets.
  7. Adjusting the counterweight mass.

Only after this can you begin priming and painting. For security, it is recommended to place a lock at the bottom.

In the overview video you can see an example of the manufacture of such a structure:

To date, many have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. various designs garage doors. We offer you a description of the most popular types of gate systems, as well as a guide to self-assembly and installation of swing gates - the easiest design to manufacture, which almost every novice craftsman can handle. As you gain experience, you will be able to assemble more complex systems.

In such gates, the leaf moves to the side using a system of guides and rollers. Gates can be installed outside and inside the garage.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main advantages of sliding gates, the following points should be noted:

The main disadvantage is the fact that such gates can only be installed on a garage with a wide facade. Its width should be at least such that the sliding sash can completely fit on it.

Such gates can be made and installed independently. The doors themselves are made using almost the same principle as the doors of ordinary swing gates. The differences are present only at the installation stage - instead of hinges, guides and rollers are used.

Very convenient option. Most often, there are systems in which the sash rises up and is fixed above the opening. Galvanized steel is usually used to make gates. Aluminum structures are also often found - such doors weigh noticeably less than their steel counterparts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages are as follows:

However, such gates can only be used to equip a private garage located on a protected individual plot. Lifting structures, especially those made of aluminum, have a relatively low rigidity, which does not allow them to provide the required protection for the garage.

Such gates have quite complex design. To make them yourself you need to have a good engineering experience and own special knowledge necessary for selecting a suitable counterweight and installing related mechanisms.

A novice master can only try to install ready-made factory-assembled overhead gates on his own. This is done quite simply in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The structure is assembled from several horizontal sections connected to each other using hinges. The outer sections are equipped with rollers moving along guide bars. The guides themselves bend so that when the gate is opened, they fit smoothly under the garage ceiling.

The design is characterized by fairly high reliability and rigidity. Inside each section, as a rule, there is already insulation, which further increases the heat and sound insulation properties of the gate.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The disadvantages are relatively low burglary resistance and high price.

You will not be able to make such a gate yourself. Of course, you can try, but it’s not a fact that homemade design will work correctly. In addition, the production of sections will take an irrational amount of money and time.

Most often they consist of two wings. The gate is based on a metal frame. Sandwich panels, steel sheets and other suitable materials can be used for cladding.

For greater convenience, you can cut a gate into the sash.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The main disadvantage is the need for sufficient free space in front of the garage to open the gate. This causes particular inconvenience in winter - in order to open the gate, you will have to first clear the path in front of it of snow.

Swing gates are the easiest to manufacture. It is in their favor that it is recommended to give preference to novice masters.

Guide to making swing gates

Pre-plan the dimensions of the future gate in accordance with the dimensions of the opening to enter the garage and buy required amount materials. For greater convenience, make a drawing or at least a basic sketch.

First stage - mounting frame

Start by making a supporting frame. Raw materialmetal corner. The frame will consist of an external and internal support frame.

First step. Measure the opening.

Second step. Cut the corner into pieces of the required size for making the outer frame. Lay out the resulting elements on a plane, align them horizontally and align the corners.

To adjust the horizontal, use shims, check the corners with a square. If it is absent, you can simply measure the diagonals. Correct any deviations immediately.

Thus, you need to lay out the blanks in the form of a future outer frame.

Third step. Weld the supporting frame. Her outer side should be as smooth and absolutely level as possible, otherwise the gate will not fit tightly enough to it. To ensure the required smoothness, grind the weld seams using an ordinary grinder.

Fourth step. Weld vertical corner pieces into the corners of the structure. They will provide the necessary rigidity of the frame, i.e., allow it to remain geometrically unchanged.

Second stage - frame

Start making the frame. Later you will attach the finishing metal sheet to this frame. The frame itself can be made from metal profile cross section 6x2 cm.

First step. Place the frame face up on a suitable flat surface.

Second step. Insert the guides into the supporting frame. Carefully level each side of the structure.

Third step. Provide a 15-20mm gap between the supporting frame and the inner gate frame. To do this, use earbuds. Thanks to this gap, the doors will be able to move without difficulty in the future.

Fourth step. Make sure that the corners of the frame are straight and finally weld the profiles.

The third stage - sheathing

Be as careful and careful as possible at this stage. The aesthetic qualities and a number of the most important functional properties of the finished structure fully depend on the correct execution of the cladding.

First step. Trim steel sheet according to the size of the garage doors. In this case, the left gate leaf should overlap the right one with a 1-2 cm overlap - take this point into account.

Second step. Temporarily secure the sheets to the frame. To do this, grab them at several points below.

Third step. Trim the trim of the right gate leaf by 10-20 mm (needed for overlap, mentioned earlier).

Fourth stage. Finally weld the sheets to the frame. First, weld the material at the corners and in the center of each box, and then fix it around the perimeter. Thanks to this, the sheets will not move during operation. After welding is completed, the corner and center fastening points must be cut off.

Stage four - loops

Hanging hinges are best to buy.

Weld the lower hinge element to the supporting frame. Weld the top element to the outer sash. You can use a curved metal strip to strengthen the connection. It must be attached to the top of the hinge and to the gate leaf.

Additionally, the fixation rigidity of the hinges can be increased by welding a reinforcing liner to the inside of the product.

Fifth stage - locks and constipations

The gates in question are most often equipped with hinged or mortise locks. Additionally, it is recommended to install stoppers and a high-quality deadbolt. These products will allow you to close your garage door from the inside.

Pin stoppers can be easily made on your own. To make such a structure, drive a piece of pipe into the ground or garage floor, and immerse a metal rod inside it - the movable element of the stopper. The rod must be threaded through a loop previously made in the sash. Make sure that the pipe is not clogged with snow and various dirt.

Locks also require timely and competent maintenance. Protect your gate locks from moisture, especially in winter. Lubricate the locks periodically with oil.

Stage six - painting

The paint layer will provide additional protection metal sheet from corrosion and other damage.

Prime the metal, let it dry, and then apply a double coat of your metal finishing paint of choice.

Any Painting works perform either on outdoors, or in a room with good ventilation!

Seventh stage - installation

First step. Install external and internal element gate frame. Fix to the slopes of the gate opening using metal pins about 18 cm long.

Second step. Trim the protruding edges of the metal pins, scald them and carefully sand them with a grinder so that in the future they do not interfere with the gate closing. If desired, you can paint the pins.

Third step. Fasten the inner and outer parts of the frame using 40 mm jumpers (metal plates). Weld the jumpers in increments of about 50-60 cm.

Fourth stage. Hang the sashes. If you wish, you can equip your garage door with automation. This is very convenient - you don’t have to constantly open and close the doors yourself.

Eighth stage - insulation

In the absence of high-quality thermal insulation, up to 50-60% of the heat will escape through the gate. If you plan to use the garage in the cold season and are going to equip it with some type of heating, be sure to resolve the issue of installing insulation.

To do this, install a lathing made of wooden blocks on the inner surface of the gate leaves. Select the fastening pitch of the elements individually in accordance with the width of the insulation boards. For thermal insulation, it is recommended to use mineral wool and other materials based on it.

Before laying the insulation, secure it over the sheathing plastic film. Place the insulation in the cells of the sheathing. Lay the insulation as tightly as possible, without cracks or gaps. For most regions, a 5-centimeter thickness of insulation layer is more than enough. Cover with thermal insulation vapor barrier film. Place clapboard or other facing material on top of the insulated sheathing.

There is nothing overly complicated about designing and installing garage doors yourself. All you need to do is follow the instructions and remain attentive at every stage of the work. Once you understand the procedure for arranging simple swing gates, you will be able to build more complex structures yourself.

Good luck!
