Linoleum is a practical and visually attractive floor covering that is found in houses, apartments, cottages, offices, shopping centers, public institutions... Almost everywhere. How to lay linoleum, how to do it correctly - read on.

On what basis

Even when choosing flooring The question arises on what to lay linoleum on. Is it necessary to prepare the foundation and, if so, how seriously? The answer is simple: linoleum can be laid on any base. The main thing is that it is smooth, durable and clean. Preparation takes place and can be easy and quick if the base is level. In this case, the floor is simply cleaned and dried. If the floor has potholes or large uneven surfaces, preparation takes longer. For correction, screed or self-leveling mixtures can be used; dry screed with sheet building material (plywood, OSB, MDF boards). It all depends on the type of base.

Concrete and wood floor

You can easily lay linoleum on a concrete floor. In general, there may be differences on the surface, the main thing is that they are not local - small and deep pits and tubercles are excluded. There may be changes, but they are smooth. If there are significant unevennesses, it is better to fill in a leveling screed before laying linoleum.

Lay this topcoat on a flat wooden floor. Many people think that the wood will rot underneath it. If the wood is dry, without signs of infection with fungi and mold, then nothing will happen to it. At correct installation a sealed layer is obtained, so that moisture does not penetrate inside. If there are seams, they are welded so that moisture penetration into them is unlikely. To prevent water from getting under, choose wide models and press them well to the floor. More reliable way— place self-adhesive tape under the linoleum around the perimeter for sealing.

If the boardwalk itself is made correctly, with normal ventilation, then there is no reason for it to rot. If you are very worried, before laying linoleum, treat the floor with antiseptics.

If in plank floor There are noticeable cracks; after some time they will be visible on the coating. If they are small, they can be puttied and the surface can be leveled using sanding. Sometimes the floorboards arch, lifting slightly at the edges. It will not be possible to sand such a floor - there are a lot of nails. In this case, or if the gaps are too large, it is recommended to place sheet material- plywood, OSB, MDF. They are good because they do not have a very large thermal expansion, and OSB does not yet absorb moisture (you can take moisture resistant plywood), and this is important in damp rooms (in the kitchen, for example).

And fiberboard as a base for linoleum is not a very good option - when humidity increases, they swell, and the fiberboard goes in waves. After drying, the original shape is not restored, so the linoleum laid on top becomes hunched and wrinkled.

Before laying linoleum, you need to lay or. This is necessary if the plank floor “plays” and the boards sag. If you lay the coating directly on the boards, it will crack in the places where it bends, and quite quickly. This means replacing the floor covering, and problems with the boards are also possible - moisture can seep into the cracks.

This is what it means “with seams running apart”

When laying any sheet material to level the floor under linoleum, it is laid with the seams staggered so that they do not coincide (like brickwork). Small seams are left between the sheets, which are then filled with elastic (non-hardening) mastic.

Is it possible to lay new linoleum on the old flooring?

Let’s say right away that before laying linoleum, it is advisable to remove the old coating. But this can be problematic and then it is permissible to lay flooring on top of an existing one. True only if the old floor is smooth or unevenness can be repaired New linoleum put on old, on tiles, on parquet. If there are defects in the base - chips, dents, protrusions - they are eliminated, sealed with putty, trimmed, the seams between the tiles are rubbed down so that the surface is even.

Lay linoleum on parquet, tiles or other linoleum. But only under one condition - the base must be level

There are usually no problems with old linoleum as a substrate. If there are bumps, they are pierced, filled with glue, and the cracks are coated. repair crewcold welding for linoleum type “C” or sealant. When laying new linoleum on old one, there may be another problem - it will turn out too soft and significant depressions may form under the legs of the furniture.

On parquet, as well as on plank floors, it is advisable to lay a backing made of sheet material - the planks can also “walk”, tearing the coating.

To glue or not

Before laying linoleum, you need to decide whether you will glue it or not. There is an opinion that it is not necessary to glue it in houses and apartments. It is pressed against baseboards, furniture, large appliances, etc. All this “holds” him in place. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It usually works on hard semi-commercial and commercial types of coating, but does not work on softer - household ones.

The thing is thermal expansion. In the summer, when it’s hot, linoleum expands, “creeping out” from under furniture and appliances. In the fall, it shrinks to its previous size, but does not return under the furniture. Waves and bumps form. Therefore, the majority agrees that it should be fixed.

If you don't glue it, it might look like this

Just keep in mind that linoleum either does not need to be glued at all, or glued completely. Glue it in some places - you are almost guaranteed to get humps and swelling after a while.

What to glue

Before laying linoleum, you need to figure out what to glue it with. If the room is small, fit household linoleum in one piece on a smooth base (sheet material, old linoleum etc.), you can fix it with double-sided tape. It is fixed securely, but due to thermal expansion Humps may form between the tape strips. Therefore, if you glue linoleum, then use glue.

There are two types of adhesives:

The first option is more familiar to us, but when changing the coating you have to suffer for a long time, tearing off the coating and glue residues from the base. The fixation holds the “shift” no less reliably, but allows you to easily re-lay it several times (from 5 to 8 depending on the composition).

Fixations

Fixations are used for laying household and semi-commercial linoleum. If we talk about the price per liter, then fixation is much more expensive. But its consumption is much less (100-180 g/square), so gluing one square meter it will be cheaper. From all points of view, this is the best option. Here are some normal fasteners to work with:

There are other manufacturers, new products appear every day. But, before purchasing, read the instructions carefully. See that it can be used on your base, with your type of coating.

Adhesive for linoleum

You should definitely not use solvent-based glue (neoprene). Technologies have changed so that such glue produces a color change (red spots appear). This glue can only be used to glue marmoleum (a material based on natural ingredients).

If you decide to use glue, here are the brands that give good results:

If you need to save money, household linoleum “with a pile”, on a jute or foam base, can be glued to PVA or Bustilat M. If it is placed on concrete, screed or other similar coating, first the glue is diluted with water (1 to 1), and the surface is primed with this composition (maybe twice). Then PVA or Bustilat is applied and the coating is rolled out “on wet”.

How to glue linoleum joints

There is a special glue for joining linoleum joints. It is called “cold welding for linoleum”. These are small tubes with a sharp spout, with which the composition is filled directly into the joint. It does not so much glue as it dissolves adjacent areas of the coating, creating a sealed seam.

There are two types of cold welding for linoleum:

When laying linoleum, naturally, type A is used. Pay attention to the instructions for use. There they are different types, require different drying times.

If you haven’t worked with cold welding for linoleum joints before, practice first on scraps. Once you have mastered the technology and understand what and how to do, you can start gluing joints indoors.

One more point: the glue for joining linoleum joints does not polymerize until it releases harmful substances. Therefore, windows and doors are opened in the room, providing ventilation. It’s better to work with gloves, and a respirator won’t hurt.

How to lay linoleum with your own hands

In order for self-laid linoleum to be pleasing to the eye, not to swell or wrinkle, it is necessary to fulfill several mandatory points. The first is related to the preparation of the foundation. You already know that it should be even. In addition, it must be dry and clean. No dust or any grease or other stains. We collect everything with a vacuum cleaner, remove stains suitable means, dry everything thoroughly. We do all this carefully: dust impairs adhesion to the base, and debris particles will eventually appear through the coating.

Second required condition: before laying linoleum, it must “rest” for some time in a straightened state. Preferably at the installation site. It is rolled out and left for at least 2 days, but better - for 5-7 days. So it straightens out and takes on “working” dimensions. After this you can start cutting.

How to trim

Let's start with how to cut linoleum. There are two options - a knife and scissors. Both can work normally, they just have to be sharp.

Some people find it more convenient to use a stationery knife, but a shoe knife or a sharp kitchen knife will also work, although there are special ones. They have a retractable blade, like stationery knives, but their handle is curved and the blade almost does not bend.

On a utility knife, the ridges that hold the blade must be iron. In this case, the blade is more elastic and there is less chance that the cut will go to the side. It is precisely because the blade can “lead” that some craftsmen prefer powerful scissors. To make cutting easier, they make an incision, and then, without making cutting movements, they simply rip the coating along the intended line.

Now about where to trim. Roll out the linoleum so that it extends slightly onto the walls. If there are several canvases, an overlap of at least 5 cm is made at the junction. If there is a pattern, lay out the canvases so as to achieve a match. Then the connection point will not be noticeable.

The linoleum is cut in the corner, the joint remains overlapped and is trimmed after gluing the main part. The canvas is pressed to the floor and cut off with a knife or scissors. Please note that if work is carried out in a cool room, in summer the coating will increase in size due to high temperatures. If you cut the canvas close to the wall, in the summer a roller will form near the baseboards. He then, with more low temperatures, can stretch, but in the summer it spoils the view. Therefore, when cutting, retreat from the wall about 1 cm.

Glue to the base

If you decide to lay linoleum without gluing, it is usually fixed along the baseboards with double-sided tape. The same material is glued in the door area. In this case, turn away the edges and stick tape on the base. We return the edges to their place and carefully level the coating. After making sure that it lies flat, without distortions or waves, remove the protective tape from the adhesive tape and glue the covering.

If you work with glue, you act a little differently. Roll the covering up to half its length. The composition is applied to the floor (strictly according to the instructions). If there is a joint, a strip of about 35 cm wide without glue is left on both sides of it. After waiting the time prescribed according to the instructions, the linoleum is rolled out again and pressed well.

The technology requires a pressure roller - a heavy cylinder (about 50 kg in weight), movably mounted on a handle, which squeezes out air and presses the coating to the base, ensuring good adhesion. If there is no roller, take a plastic smoother, which you use and press everything well. You can use a board wrapped in felt or felt or something similar.

Then glue the other side. If the canvas was laid in one piece, we can assume that the installation of linoleum is completed. All that remains is to secure the baseboards. If there are any joints, we continue.

Seam processing

If there are two or more canvases, the seams will need to be processed. There is a simple way - take a T-shaped metal strip and secure it at the joint (attached with screws or dowels, depending on the type of base). The method is not very aesthetic, but reliable. This is exactly what they do if two pieces of linoleum with different colors are joined under the door.

A more aesthetically pleasing way is to use cold weld linoleum glue. First you need to trim off the excess material at the joint. We take a metal ruler (a level or a rule will do), apply it at the joint, cut both sheets along it with a knife, and remove the excess strips. It is very important to cut through both sheets at once. In this case, if the pattern is chosen correctly, the connection is imperceptible, since the two canvases match perfectly. If the base under the linoleum is hard, you can put something soft under the joint - a piece of felt, linoleum, etc. Then it will be easier to cut both sheets at once.

We unscrew the non-glued parts of the coating along the seam, apply glue, wait, if necessary, the time according to the instructions, glue the coating in place, and roll it with a roller. We wait the time required for the glue to dry (according to the instructions).

Next, we take cold welding for linoleum joints and a wide masking tape. We glue the joint with this tape, then stationery knife, cut it along the joint. This is necessary to protect the coating from accidental contact with the composition. It is chemically active and will melt the coating, leaving an unsightly stain. The next steps are:

If everything is done correctly, the joint is almost invisible. There is no need to test it yet - several hours are required for final polymerization. But that's all. Linoleum is laid and you know how to lay it yourself.

Most often, a person who wants to start a renovation is afraid not of the upcoming work, but of the mess that is present before the renovation. It is necessary to properly prepare for the start of finishing, which simply cannot be done without. Although there are exceptions to all rules, and in this article we will look at one of them.

Several decades ago, linoleum was the most popular flooring among many domestic developers. The main reasons and advantages were: ease of installation and dismantling, as well as the most low price among all flooring materials. Unfortunately, the quality of worn-out material did not always satisfy even the most modest requirements, but this reason did not particularly deter buyers.

without him special effort can be replaced independently, even by craftsmen with a minimum of construction skills, armed with the necessary tools. But when it comes to changing, a logical question arises: is it possible to lay linoleum on linoleum, in what cases is it allowed, and is it even possible? After all, it would be very convenient and at the same time it would be possible not to do such great destruction in the apartment and avoid the usual dust and dirt in such cases.

Many argue to this day about the advantages and disadvantages of this type of linoleum installation. For of this type coating there are certain limitations, in the presence of which it is impossible to achieve the highest quality results. Also, carrying out work involves many nuances that need to be taken into account.

Advantages and disadvantages

To find the correct answer to the question whether it is possible to lay linoleum on linoleum, first you need to say a few words directly about this material. Linoleum is an inexpensive type of all existing flooring, however, this does not mean at all that it looks cheap and does not last long.

This type of flooring does not require special care. There is no need to polish or clean it too thoroughly because dirt and dust practically do not stick to it. Therefore, all care consists of the usual wiping with a damp cloth, as well as timely correction of damage and leveling of unevenness.

Worn flooring doesn't always look old. There are times when it simply does not match the atmosphere of the room, does not match the color or style. Therefore, the most appropriate option would be to lay new linoleum on top of the old one.

This method has many advantages:

  1. Installing a new sheet on the old flooring will save a lot of time that you would have spent on dismantling the old flooring, preparing the base, etc. preparatory work.
  2. Due to the fact that there is no need to dismantle and lay down an insulating substrate, it turns out to significantly save money.
  3. If you cover an old one with a new canvas, without dismantling, this will help to avoid the creation of large debris and dust during work (of course, you won’t be able to get rid of it completely, but in any case there will be much less of it than with a major re-laying of the material).
  4. The need to prepare the base for laying new material is completely eliminated.
  5. Since the old coating will serve as a kind of substrate, it turns out to achieve a high level of heat and sound insulation.
  6. Due to the two-layer linoleum, the floor will become much softer, muffling the sound of steps.

But it is worth noting that this method has a number of disadvantages:

  1. The new coating can quickly deteriorate if poor quality training old canvas as a backing. It may be that the new flooring will go in waves, which will cause creases.
  2. In some cases, there are risks of developing harmful fungus if, during installation, the installer, as they say, “didn’t check.” The pest will quickly spread from the base to a new layer of canvas, and this can lead to subsequent health problems. There are types of fungus that can contribute to asthma and other respiratory problems.
  3. If creases and holes appear, it will be much more difficult to restore the material than if it were placed on a concrete base.

Important! First you need to carefully weigh all the pros and cons of adopting the right decision as to whether it is possible to lay linoleum on linoleum and only then can we begin to plan such an important decision.

When can I lay it down?

So is it possible to lay linoleum on linoleum? Looking ahead, I’ll say right away that this material, perhaps put it on top of the old one, but whether it’s worth doing this - we’ll figure it out further. There are certain indications for the possibility of laying flooring using this method.

You should not ignore them, this can lead to rapid damage to the new canvas, let’s take a closer look:

  • Old flooring requires special attention. Its beauty is not as important as its current condition. Cracks in the canvas that do not form a relief or the height difference does not exceed 1.5 mm can be ignored, and should not be considered as “impossible” to lay a new coating using this method.
  • You also need to pay close attention to how the canvas is secured. If it fits tightly to the concrete base or, as they say, “glued tightly,” then there will be no contraindications. Inspect the floor very carefully, so you may find voids and promptly eliminate them.
  • If your old deck has antiseptic impregnation, then you are lucky. Since, most likely, you are unlikely to find traces of fungus or other similar vegetation on it. But if such impregnation is not provided, it is recommended to pay careful attention to the presence of such anomalies that at least somehow resemble. If nothing was found, then the canvas is one hundred percent suitable for use as a substrate.
  • The evenness of the subfloor is also very important. Previously, builders did not pay special attention floor screed and laid linoleum directly on the unleveled wavy floor, as a result of which it quickly became unusable, torn and cracked. If the base does not have serious differences and it can be said that the floor is almost flat, then laying a new canvas on the old one is allowed.

  • Pay attention to the service life of the previous canvas. If it is no more than 5 years old, then there is no need to refuse to use it as a substrate. One can even say that it would be a stupid decision to completely dismantle it, since as a result it will be much more expensive and physically more expensive.
  • It is also important to consider the type conformity of the old material and the new one. Linoleum happens the following types: household, semi-commercial, commercial and highly specialized. They differ in the material of manufacture - alkyd, nitrocellulose, relin, PVC, rubber and colloxylin. It is recommended to lay linoleum that belongs to the same type of material as the previous one. For example, it would be ideal if you put household on household, commercial on something similar, etc.

In general, there are quite a lot of indications for deciding whether linoleum can be laid on linoleum.

Important to remember! Your option must fully meet the above requirements. Otherwise, you will only waste time and money in vain, and the floor you receive at the end of the work will not meet your desires.

When should you not put it?

The most common options:

  • Well, firstly, it is strictly forbidden to lay a new layer on an old canvas if it is poorly fixed to concrete base. The sign may be a large number of voids, swellings and so-called waves. In the case where the voids are small, you can try to fill them with improvised means, for example cold welding, but if the entire flooring, roughly speaking, is fixed only with the help of skirting boards, it is recommended to do a complete dismantling and remove the floors in accordance with all building codes.
  • It doesn’t matter what type of linoleum is laid, its service life should not exceed the limits. Sometimes the question of laying one covering on top of another arises among owners of floors that were installed back in Soviet times. Of course, dismantle the tightly glued this coating It will not be easy, however, this must be done, especially if its service life has already crossed the twenty-year mark.
  • Laying such an overlap on a crooked floor is a very stupid idea. Since the canvas will probably repeat not only all the waves, voids and bends, but also every slightest damage and will soon lose its solid appearance.

  • An important contraindication will be the presence of fungal or mold spores. In this case, it is better to completely abandon such work in favor of overhaul grounds.
  • A dirty, dusty previous coating is not suitable for a new flooring. This is due to the fact that dust pollution acts on the human body in the same way as mold and mildew spores, not to mention the fact that they often harbor dust mites, which are also very dangerous for humans.
  • Installation should not be carried out on worn-out flooring assembled from several pieces or strips. Due to the fact that over time, existing joints can separate, creating dents in the substrate, and this threatens damage to the presentable top sheet.
  • It is not recommended to lay the flooring with a felt backing, because big problems with its gluing. This type cannot be glued to simple or double-sided tape; you will need to purchase more expensive adhesive materials, so a complete re-flooring will be faster and cheaper.
  • Also, an important contraindication is dictated by the manufacturer of the model you purchased for such installation. For example, coatings from the Tarkett company are categorically not suitable for such installation; they can only be laid on a concrete or plywood-covered permanent base.

Finding the correct answer to the question of what is the best way to lay linoleum is definitely not possible. Both methods have their pros and cons, however, the most logical and competent one is still to give preference to dismantling and major replacement.

A thin canvas over the old one and without a backing can only be used in those rare cases when the old coating is completely intact and there are no differences at which it could tear new material. But it’s better to choose linoleum with a backing, or you can lay it separately, before laying the flooring.

In general, when a new sheet is laid on an old one, its choice should be based on the thickness of the substrate, and not the upper working plane. You need to be sure that the new coating will not tear immediately.

And when you are sure that the substrate is strong enough, you can think about it. For example, linoleum is divided into homogeneous and heterogeneous. And, in addition, it can be commercial, semi-commercial or for home use, the working layer of this one is 0.25 mm. These parameters must be remembered when choosing; the service life of the flooring depends on them.

For cases with unlimited financial capabilities best choice a homogeneous commercial type will become, but for the average person this choice is unreasonably expensive. In addition, white stripes appearing on a homogeneous coating is its unpleasant feature. This is especially true when laying a new canvas over an old one.

The stripes are the result of a violation of production technology. You can conduct an experiment to help avoid them. There is a sharp bend at the tip, and if a white stripe has already appeared, it is better not to take such linoleum, a violation of technology is obvious. When folded, the material should remain the same color as without folds.

If additional noise and heat insulation is required, it is better to lay a coating with a foam backing. Also, this material perfectly levels out small irregularities. The felt type of backing can protect against heel dents and damage under furniture.

Carpet will help you achieve the best degree of sound insulation. But this material is more complex, you need to know how to care for it. Therefore, when choosing which is better - carpet or linoleum, you should weigh all the pros and cons.

Stages of work and tool preparation

The general procedure for installation is to purchase the canvas and necessary tools, as well as in proper preparation base, cutting and, of course, laying the coating.

The whole process consists of the following steps:

  1. need and , buy required amount material;
  2. prepare the previous flooring for installation;
  3. roll out the roll and let it rest and level out;
  4. cut the material;
  5. cover and secure;
  6. glue or weld the joints (seams) of the sheets together (if necessary).

Each stage of installation requires a specific tool, it is recommended to take care of this in advance:

  • long aluminum rule or for cutting and trimming accuracy;
  • yardstick;
  • construction pencil;
  • stationery knife with removable blades for cutting, making various holes and for trimming material along walls;
  • painting spatulas for applying and leveling the adhesive composition;
  • hard roller for rolling out material and removing air bubbles;
  • tools designed for sealing and welding seams.

All of the listed tools will help you get the job done quickly and conveniently, and their correct use will ensure more high-quality installation and will allow you to achieve the expected result.

How to lay linoleum on linoleum, can you do it yourself? First you need to figure out when this is possible, and what criteria must be met for this.

It is necessary to lay the material on as flat a surface as possible, since it follows all the changes on the plane where it lies, and will inevitably tear over time in protruding places. Of course, a lot also depends on the material itself, its quality, thickness and the substrate for it.

In any case, if there are sharp differences in height of more than 1.5 mm on the floor surface, the canvas laid on top will inevitably crack, regardless of the thickness of the substrate. And after some time, the coating will not withstand constant tension and will tear.

Thus, it is possible to lay new linoleum on top of the previous one if there are no similar holes in the old one caused by uneven floors. We are not talking here about cracks and severe abrasion in areas of constant walking. This refers only to torn pieces; this is how sudden changes occur if they are not initially under the old covering on the floor itself.

And even in that rare case, if the old material lying on the floor meets all the requirements, and the new one will lie on top of it, there is no way to do without a little preparatory work.

Eg:

  1. Be sure to remove the baseboards and thresholds. Whether to use them further or not is everyone’s personal decision; most likely it will be better to install new ones that are more suitable for the color and texture.
  2. The connecting strips at the seams, if present, must also be removed.
  3. Wide, long cracks and differences that give rise to well-founded concerns can be filled with soft sealants. Then the surface is treated with a soft rubber spatula and left to dry.
  4. Sweep (vacuum) and thoroughly wash the floor; the surface should be dry without the slightest debris.

How to lay linoleum on linoleum correctly?

After preparing the floor, the covering must be laid on it in exactly the same way as during normal installation:

  1. The roll needs to be carefully rolled out on the floor, one edge is pressed evenly and tightly against the wall, the other side is wound on the opposite wall. Leave it to rest for about 12 hours and align the edges; this will make the upcoming work much easier and reduce the risk of unevenness.
  2. After the canvas is well leveled, carefully trim it in the corners of the room, at the threshold of doors and other protruding parts of the room. you need to use a sharp construction knife directly on the floor. You need to make sure that the knife has a new sharp blade, and it cuts the coating without making burrs on it or breaking through it. Also, the material should not be cut independently, because there may also be curves on the wall that it is better for the coating to repeat. Leave it for another day for complete leveling under the influence of its gravity.
  3. Then you can do the actual installation. Due to the fact that the previous flooring has a rather slippery working side, the two coverings must be glued together. This can be done using specialized glue (long, difficult and expensive) or double-sided tape (quick, easy and cheap). You can find out more about how this is done here - how to glue linoleum.

If you need to connect two pieces, there are four methods for this:

  • Welding, artisanal method. It is necessary to accurately fit the two pieces to each other without gaps or sagging. Place a thick layer of film under the seam, coated with . Instead of a press, they use a hot iron, ironing the seam through newspaper or paper. This method is good for linoleum without a backing.
  • Professional welding with a hot hair dryer. For this purpose in construction hair dryer a special nozzle is placed and a cord (bundle) from the batch of flooring to be glued is threaded into it. A cut is made between the pieces, and the seam is glued with molten cord.
  • Cold welding, A-type. With this method, specialized liquid glue is poured into the slot between the pieces; it hardens and forms a fairly strong connection.
  • Cold welding, C-type. It is similar to A-type, but makes monolithic connections with a gap of up to 4 mm.

The final stage is screwing the baseboards. You can read our review. Can be installed as cheap plastic models, and expensive natural ones made of wood.

In our next article, we will tell you whether it is possible: features, installation methods and step-by-step instructions.

Video: Laying linoleum on linoleum

Reading time ≈ 6 minutes

Linoleum is not a complicated process, but it is labor-intensive and requires compliance with many recommendations. The most important thing is preparatory stage, which involves preparing the floor surface for flooring finishing coating. Therefore, many are afraid not of the repair process itself, but of a series of preparatory work. Many people associate all these activities preceding installation with destruction, disorder and a large amount of construction dust. For this reason, some people prefer to lay fresh linoleum on old linoleum and wonder whether it can be laid on an existing similar coating.

It is believed that best option- this is still removing the old coating. There are several reasons:

There are cases when old linoleum needs to be removed mandatory: if you find swelling, dilapidated and frayed material in places, as well as large unevenness on the floor. Complete replacement coating is also required in case of obvious holes, dents and wavy areas.

If you laid linoleum quite recently and leveled the base well, then this coating most likely did not have time to deteriorate much. Defects on the floor have not yet become noticeable. In this case, you don’t have to spend a lot of time with fresh flooring; you can lay new linoleum on top of the old one. Provided that the installation of the previous coating was done efficiently and professionally, it can serve as an excellent means of sound insulation.

Advantages of laying a new coating over the old one

So is it still possible to lay linoleum on old surface linoleum? This installation technology has a number of advantages:

  • You do not waste time screeding the floor or dismantling old linoleum.
  • Before laying linoleum, you perform a minimum of preparatory activities.
  • Your floor will have sound and thermal insulation properties without additional installation.
  • The two-layer coating has increased softness, which in some cases is a plus.
  • You save significant financial resources.
  • Having received a two-level linoleum covering, you eliminate the possibility of excess dirt and dust getting into the room.

Material selection

So that the floor covering is High Quality and lasted a long time, the choice of material must be taken seriously. What criteria should you use to choose linoleum:

  1. Wear-resistant and quality linoleum for household use must have a protective layer thickness within the following parameters: 0.35 mm, 0.36-0.6 mm, more than 0.6 mm.
  2. This type of linoleum is used for rooms such as the living room or bedroom, since it implies a minimum load on the floor surface.
  3. Commercial linoleum is used for floor surfaces in offices and production premises, the thickness of the protective layer can be from 0.7 to 1 mm.

High-quality linoleum fabric

Old linoleum is one of the completely justified and easily feasible renovation options. Those who have decided to renew the flooring using this method are interested not only in whether it is possible to lay linoleum on linoleum, but also in the feasibility of such work. Laying new linoleum on the surface of the old one is allowed from a technology point of view.

Moreover, such measures as the intermediate stage in anticipation of major repairs are especially relevant. Another important positive factor is the ability to do the installation yourself, without the involvement of specialists. In addition, such installation of linoleum is quite inexpensive and does not require a significant investment of time, effort and money.

Application benefits

The main questions that arise when working with such flooring are: is it possible to lay linoleum on linoleum and what advantages does this method have?

If you have a fairly smooth old floor with a minimum number of defects, you can apply it to the old surface. In addition, this coating has a number of advantages:

Criteria for choosing linoleum

  • the indicator of wear resistance and thickness of the protective layer for household type linoleum is 0.35 millimeters;
  • the indicator of wear resistance and thickness of the protective layer for household type linoleum is 0.36-0.6 millimeters;
  • the wear resistance and thickness of the protective layer for household type linoleum is more than 0.6 millimeters;
  • household linoleum is used for bedrooms and rooms with a minimum level of load on the floor surface;
  • commercial type linoleum is intended for office and industrial premises.

In addition, it should be taken into account that the foam substrate has good sound insulation, thermal insulation and qualitatively levels out minor irregularities. Linoleum with a felt type of backing has good thermal insulation and resistant to furniture legs and heels.

Preparatory work

In order to lay new linoleum efficiently, it is necessary to carry out preparation. Any preparatory work consists of clearing the room of floor furniture and all interior items. In addition, it is necessary to carefully dismantle all the baseboards that hold the old linoleum.

On next stage In preparation for installation, it is necessary to carefully check the old linoleum for integrity. If defects are detected, before laying new linoleum on the old one, the following amount of work should be performed:

  • to fill wide seams and cracks, it is necessary to use a special sealant and then level the surface with a rubber spatula;
  • old linoleum cannot be laid on a heavily damaged layer of old linoleum, so it is advisable to cut out areas with defects and replace them with patches suitable thickness from linoleum. The joints must be leveled with sealant;
  • heavily soiled old linoleum must be thoroughly cleaned, rinsed and dried.

It is necessary to lay a layer of new linoleum on a well-sanded surface using sandpaper a surface that must first be primed to improve adhesion.

Installation rules

After completing all the preparatory work, you can begin directly laying the new linoleum. It is necessary to lay a new covering according to the standard scheme for such covering. New linoleum should be laid out on the floor so that one edge is adjacent to the wall. All excess canvas must be trimmed along the contour of all walls using a construction knife.

The cut material is left unfolded for several days, which allows the linoleum to rest and straighten. Before fastening, it is recommended to double-check the dimensions and, if necessary, re-cut the material. It is advisable to leave a certain supply of material during the cutting process in order to allow for shrinkage. Further fastening of linoleum is carried out according to the standard scheme.

  • To glue linoleum onto the surface of old linoleum, it is recommended to use a special type of glue or high-quality double-sided tape.
  • Fixing linoleum with glue is done by first bending one, which must be coated with glue and laid on the surface.
  • If during the work there are formed air bubbles they need to be forced out. Similar gluing actions are performed with the other half of the material.
  • It is advisable to install the skirting boards after the glue has completely dried.

Using the method of laying new linoleum on an old floor covering made of a similar material is very popular and allows you to independently solve many problems with minimal costs strength and means.

When starting a renovation, the first question that worries everyone concerns dismantling. In addition to the fact that during dismantling there is a large amount of dust and dirt in the apartment, it takes quite a lot of time.

Is it possible not to dismantle the floor covering if the latter is linoleum? To answer this question, it is necessary to first assess the condition of the old floor. But in what cases can linoleum be laid on linoleum?

You cannot lay a new floor covering on an old one if the latter has obvious defects in the form of cracks. The latter indicate that the rough foundation has not been properly prepared and has sharp changes in height or unevenness in the form of depressions and bulges. Therefore, you will have to not only remove the old floor covering, but also level the subfloor.

Another factor to take into account is the condition of the substrate. According to the technology of laying linoleum, it is laid on a substrate. Over time it may become deformed. After some time, the floor itself will repeat the shape of the substrate. And then the floor covering will have to be replaced with a new one.

It is not possible to control the condition of the substrate during operation. Therefore, before installing a new one on the old floor covering, you need to make sure that the substrate is in proper condition.

If there are no obvious defects, and the integrity of the old decorative covering is not broken, then the answer to the question is it possible to lay linoleum on linoleum in the affirmative.

Choosing a new coating

The modern market is overflowing with a huge number of very diverse design options. They differ in dimensions, namely width, and pricing policy. You should not choose thin options that will repeat even the most minor defects. In addition, this option should be immediately discarded if there are cracks in the old coating.

The presence of old linoleum does not mean that you do not need to use a substrate. It is better to purchase building material that already has a backing. It is desirable that it be wide enough. The thickness of the working layer should not be less than 2.5 cm. Otherwise, a long period operation will not have to be counted.

Preparatory stage

Even if there is no need to dismantle the old flooring, certain preparatory work must be carried out. These include dismantling the baseboard and connecting strips. These elements can be reused, but against the background of the new decorative coating it will be clear that the baseboard is no longer new.

If dismantling of the old material, despite the presence of cracks, is not carried out, then the latter must be filled with sealant. Subsequent work is carried out only after the sealant has dried.

Installation work

You should not start laying building material immediately after purchasing it. In warehouses it is stored in rolls and takes the appropriate shape. Therefore, in the apartment it needs to be turned around and left in this position for at least a day. Once the material is leveled, you can begin laying.

New linoleum must be laid in the room so that one side is completely adjacent to the wall. It is very important to make sure that the flooring is level. If there is a pattern on it, then it should be parallel to the wall. We trim the second side.

Experts do not recommend performing end-to-end pruning right away. It is better to leave a margin of 5-7 centimeters, which can then be easily cut off. Cut the linoleum using a construction knife. To ensure an even cut, the blade must be sharp. Therefore, you first need to prepare several new replacement blades.

You can, of course, measure the parameters of the room, make markings directly on the building material and cut according to the markings made. But apartments with smooth walls are extremely rare. Therefore, it is advisable to trim directly along the wall.

If the room is large enough, you will have to join strips of linoleum. It can be done different ways. The first method involves using an iron. The two strips are laid in such a way that there are no gaps at all. A cellophane film coated with PVA glue must first be placed under them. Next, the joints are covered with newspaper, to which a hot iron is applied. This method is applicable if the linoleum does not have a backing.

Instead of an iron, specialists use a hair dryer with a special attachment. The decorative coating strips are positioned so that there is a small gap between them. The cord that comes with the batch of decorative coating is tucked into the hair dryer nozzle. This cord is placed in the gap between the laid strips of flooring.

Simpler and affordable way- liquid Nails. The glue is simply poured between the linoleum strips.

Are running out installation work fastening the baseboard.

According to technology, linoleum must be laid on a previously prepared surface. Experts cannot answer unequivocally the question of whether it is possible to lay linoleum on linoleum. It all depends on the condition of the old decorative coating. In addition, you need to take into account the fact that each floor covering has its own operational period.

You can put a new coating on an old one that has been in place for about five years. But is it worth doing this if the old flooring is 15 years old? In this case, it is advisable to dismantle the old floor covering and place the new one on a surface prepared according to all the rules.
